Articles published in 22 counseling journals from 2010-2019 were compared on 26 author and article characteristics. Women now constitute majorities of authorship and counseling journals are publishing larger proportions of research articles, 63% of which used quantitative approaches and about 11% of which studied counseling interventions.

Articles published in the Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin (RCB) from 2000 to 2019 were analyzed for trends in author characteristics (e.g., gender, work setting, country of domicile, leading contributors) and article content (e.g., research methodology, participants, research design, statistics used, reports of effect size). Fong Chan was the leading contributor scholar and the University of Memphis was the leading institutional contributor. Among other key results, greater author collaboration was noted, and international lead authorship increased significantly to nearly 14%. Research-based articles are being published at a counseling discipline-leading rate of 96%, and almost all research article variables were relatively stable over the 20 years assessed. Generation Z has been impacted by various stressors, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which have contributed to detrimental health outcomes, including elevated rates of suicide. The majority of current U.S. college students encompass members of Gen Z, who have reported more stress than other generations. College students among other generations have demonstrated low rates of help-seeking behaviors, though these older generations were less racially diverse. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to assess gender and racial differences in help-seeking intentions for personal and emotional problems and suicidal thoughts among a racially diverse sample of 160 college students. Participants with greater thwarted belongingness (a component of suicide desire) were less likely to seek help for personal or emotional problems, with no significant differences across race or gender. These findings suggest college counselors attend to increasing social connections; programming efforts specific to this generation; and ensuring knowledge of life-saving resources across social networks. This study examined the relationships among acculturative stress, coping styles, self-efficacy, English language proficiency, and various demographic characteristics as predictors of procrastination behavior in Asian International students (N = 255) studying in the United States. Results of multiple logistic regression indicated that a collective coping style, avoidant coping style, academic self-efficacy, and English language proficiency were the significant predictors of academic procrastination in non-Indian Asian international students. Implications for college student affairs professionals and researchers are addressed.

The relationship between self-injury (SI) and suicide is largely unclear. However, researchers have suggested that clients who self-injure are at a heightened risk of suicide (Chapman & Dixon-Gordon, 2007; Toprak, Cetin, Guven, Can, & Demircan, 2011]). Thus, it is important that college counselors be knowledgeable about both SI and suicide. In this article, the authors provide an overview of SI and suicide, as well as practical information for college counselors.

All counselors, including students, are responsible for intervening when a colleague shows signs of impairment. This grounded theory study investigated experiences of 12 counseling students who reported problematic peers. An emergent theory of the peer reporting process is presented, along with implications for counselor educators and suggestions for future research.

Article content and author characteristics were analysed in the articles published in the British Journal of Guidance and Counselling (BJGC) from 2000–2019 to determine trends over time. The BJGC publishes more total articles and guidance and counselling research articles annually than any other guidance and counselling journal except the Journal of Counseling & Development. The University of Leeds was the leading institutional contributor. The proportion of UK and non-university-affiliated lead authors declined, while the proportion of women authors and collaboration increased. More research-based articles are being published, about 55% of which use qualitative approaches, and 12% of which evaluate guidance and counselling interventions. The authors examined the relationship of perceived stress, specific types of coping resources, the working alliance, and the supervisory working alliance among 232 counselor supervisees. The working alliance and the supervisory working alliance were negatively related to perceived stress and positively related to multiple coping resources. Two regression models for predicting the working alliance and supervisory working alliance from perceived stress and specific coping resources were significant. The Self-Evaluation Scale--Teacher version, used to assess teacher perceived self-esteem of students, was analyzed. A unidimensional model emerged from exploratory factor analysis, with cautious acceptance of data fit. Reliability and external aspects of validity were supported by the Self-Evaluation Scale--Teacher data.

This phenomenological study investigates the types of personal and community resources that female intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors used when leaving an abusive male partner. Three African American and 2 European American IPV survivors, ages 24 to 38 years, described positive and negative experiences with social support, personal validation, self-care, connection, IPV assessment, community validation, protection, and community support. On the basis of their experiences, a checklist of IPV competencies for counselors is presented.

This study explored the relationship between White privilege awareness and White racial identity development for 197 counseling trainees. Results indicated that 3 of J. E. Helms's (1984, 1990, 1995) White racial identity statuses (i.e., Contact, Reintegration, and Immersion/Emersian) significantly predicted White privilege awareness. The authors describe the development of the Privilege and Oppression Inventory, a measure that assesses counselors' awareness of privilege and oppression along dimensions of race, sexual orientation, religion, and gender. Initial item development as well as psychometric information derived from factor analyses, reliability estimation, and validation procedures is presented. (Contains 4 tables.)

This qualitative study explored how 16 counselors conceptualize and address issues of privilege and oppression in the counseling session as well as how they perceive their training with respect to these constructs. In an effort to bridge multicultural training and counselor practice, implications for counselor training are provided based on the clinical and academic experiences counselors reported. Additionally, future research directions are included.

In this study, the authors explored the self-perceived multicultural counseling competencies of substance abuse counselors. Overall, the results indicate that substance abuse counselors perceived themselves to be competent; however, differences existed on the basis of race and educational level. This article describes the incorporation of humanistic strategies and interactive activities for counselor educators who teach counseling courses in assessment or appraisal. This information helps demonstrate the utility of practical humanistic knowledge and skills for this important Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs core course requirement.

The authors in this qualitative study explored how White counselors define and experience privilege and oppression. Specifically, 2 research questions were addressed in semistructured interviews with 8 counselors: How do White counselors conceptualize privilege and oppression as separate but related constructs? and What experiences do White counselors generally describe concerning privilege and oppression? The authors present a research model that represents the factors that contribute to changes in the conceptualization and awareness of privilege and oppression and the way that these changes come about. Implications for counselor training are discussed.

Although the U.S. population is becoming increasingly diverse, the race of individuals entering the counseling profession remains predominantly White (S. P. Pack-Brown, 1999). The authors define and explore the connection between White privilege and oppression and encourage the use of racial identity models to address these constructs with counselor trainees in supervision.

The lived experiences of eight African American women college students were explored from an interpretive phenomenological analytic framework. The researchers identified six main themes about participants and their reported family dynamics: (a) collectivistic yet disconnected, (b) avoidance, (c) functioning in dysfunction, (d) gendered differences, (e) motivation to change the family's homeostasis, and (f) talking about generational trauma as a motivator to repair communication. In this study, the researchers examined the relationship among an orientation toward multicultural counseling competence, multicultural competent behaviors, and the working alliance from the perspective of 574 client participants across various therapeutic dyads. There was a positive relationship between clients' perspectives on counselors' multicultural orientation, counselors' multicultural competent behavior, and working alliance. Multicultural competent behaviors mediated the relationship between an orientation toward multicultural competence and working alliance. However, the mediated effect was inconsistent across cross and similar racial/ethnic therapeutic dyads.
