Background: Anemia due to living condition disproportionally affects the global refugee children. Nutritional deficiency particularly iron deficiency is the primary causes of anemia. Hence, we conducted a systemic review and meta-analysis on the prevalence of anemia among refugee children. Methods: We searched systematically all relevant studies on the prevalence of anemia among refugee children including under the age of 18 years, which were conducted between 2009 and 2023 in English from PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochran library and other gray literatures such as google scholar. Two researchers independently screened articles based on their title and abstract. The Joana Brigg's Institute (JBI) checklist was used to assess the quality of studies. Random effect model was utilized to calculate the pooled estimate of anemia. Higgins I2 statistics and Egger's test were analyzed to check heterogeneity and publication bias, respectively. Subgroup analysis by continent, age group of the children and year of study was employed to identify the source of heterogeneity. Result: A total of 14 studies were included in the final meta-analysis. Most of the studies were from Asian countries followed by African countries. The pooled prevalence of anemia among global refugee children was 36.54 with (95% CI: 23.79, 49.28). There was moderate level of heterogeneity between the studies (I2 = 68.91, P<0.001). The highest pooled prevalence of anemia in refugee children was reported in African, it was 56.1%, whereas the lowest pooled prevalence of anemia was in N. America, it was 12.66%. The prevalence of anemia was highest (53.88) in studies done among under-five refugee children. Conclusion: The global prevalence of anemia among refugee children is found to be moderate public health problem. Anemia prevalence is more common in African refugee children. Intervention and prevention for should be focused especially for refugees found in low- and middle-income countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Lean methodology, originally developed in the manufacturing sector, is a process management philosophy focused on maximizing value by eliminating waste. Its application in laboratory settings, particularly concerning laboratory turnaround times (TAT), involves a systematic approach to identifying inefficiencies and optimizing processes to enhance value for end customers. Methods: This systematic review was registered in PROSPERO with identification number (CRD42024552350) and reported based on the 2020 PRISMA checklist. An extensive search strategy was performed using PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases and gray literatures. Advanced searching was used using Boolean operators (AND & OR). After articles were exported to endnote x8, duplications were removed and articles were selected based on titles, abstracts, and full texts. The illegibility of the articles was independently assessed by the three authors (NC, DMB, and BBT), and the disagreements were settled through scientific consensus. Methodological quality was assessed using JBI critical appraisal checklist. Discussion: In this review, electronic databases search yielded 1261 articles, of which 7 met the inclusion criteria. The review demonstrated, implementation of lean principle into the routine laboratory testing had an overall impact 76.1% on reducing laboratory TAT. Transportation, manual data processing, inefficient workflow, and the heavy workload were identified as the main wasteful procedures. To eliminate these non-value-added steps, several intervention techniques were implemented, including the use of a barcoding system, process redesign, workflow optimization, hiring additional staff, and relocating the sample collection room closer to the result distribution center. Lean implementation is crucial in the medical laboratory industry for optimizing processes, reducing TAT, and ultimately enhancing customer satisfaction. As a result, all clinical laboratories should adopt and implement lean principles in their routine testing processes. Background: Malaria control depends primarily on rapid and accurate diagnosis followed by successful treatment. Light microscopy is still used as a gold standard method for the diagnosis of malaria. The Sysmex hematology analyzer is a novel method for malaria detection. Therefore, the aim of this review was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of the Sysmex hematology analyzer for malaria diagnosis. Methods: Electronic databases like PubMed, PubMed Central, Science Direct databases, Google Scholar, and Scopus were used to find relevant articles from April to June 14, 2023. The studies' methodological quality was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 tool. Using Review Manager 5.4.1, the estimates of sensitivity and specificity, as well as their 95% confidence intervals, were shown in forest plots. Midas software in Stata 14.0 was utilized to calculate the summary estimates of sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, and diagnostic odds ratio. Heterogeneity was assessed by using I2 statistics. In addition, publication bias was assessed using a funnel plot and Deeks' test. Sub-group and meta- regression analysis were also performed. Results: A total of 15 studies were assessed for diagnostic accuracy. The sensitivity and specificity of Sysmex hematology analyzer for studies ranged from 46% to 100% and 81% to 100%, respectively. The summary estimate of sensitivity and specificity of Sysmex hematology analyzer were 95% (95% CI: 85%-99%) and 99% (95% CI: 97%-100%), respectively. It had excellent diagnostic accuracy. There were significant heterogeneity among the studies included in this meta-analysis. The summary estimate of sensitivity and specificity of Sysmex hematology analyzer using polymerase chain reaction as the gold standard was 97.6% (95% CI: 83.2, 99.7) and 99.4% (98.5, 99.8), respectively. Conclusion: In this review, Sysmex hematology analyzer had excellent diagnostic accuracy. Therefore, it could be used as an alternate diagnostic tool for malaria diagnosis in the hospital and health center. Objective: Liver function test (LFT) abnormalities are higher in patients with severe COVID-19. Most of the studies on this theme were conducted in foreign nations, and the association with LFT abnormalities was not sufficiently addressed in the study areas. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the effects of COVID-19 infection on liver function of patients., Setting: A facility-based comparative cross-sectional study was carried out from 10 April to 15 June 2022, among COVID-19 infected individuals admitted in Eka Kotebe General Hospital and Saint Petrous Specialized Hospitals, Addis Ababa, 2022., Participants: A total of 284 confirmed COVID-19-positive and COVID-19-negative controls matched by gender and age were included in the present study., Results: Among SARS-COV-2 positive groups, 63 (44.4%) had one or more LFT abnormalities. The most common elevated level of the LFTs among patients with COVID-19 were gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) 50 (35.2%), while the most common lowered level was albumin 58 (40.8%). The mean values of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (35.4±26.9 vs 22.9±12.6, p<0.001) were significantly different between patients with COVID-19 and the COVID-19-free groups. Being COVID-19-positive was significantly associated with an elevated level of AST (AOR=3.0, 95% CI 1.2 to 7.4) and GGT (AOR=4.55, 95% CI 2.02 to 10.3). Being male was significantly associated with an elevated level of total bilirubin (BILT, AOR=2.41, 95% CI 1.2 to 4.9) and direct bilirubin (BILD, AOR=3.7, 95% CI 1.72 to 8.2), and also severe stage of COVID-19 was associated with hypoalbuminaemia (AOR=3.3, 95% CI 1.4 to 7.9).
