Animal and human postmortem studies provide evidence for changes in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate in prefrontal cortex (PFC) during adolescence, suggesting shifts in excitation and inhibition balance consistent with critical period plasticity. However, how GABA and glutamate change through adolescence and how the balance of these inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters changes is not well understood in vivo in humans. High field (7 Tesla) Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Imaging was used to investigate age-related changes in the balance of GABA/creatine (Cr) and glutamate/Cr in multiple developmentally-relevant regions of PFC in 144 10 to 30-year-olds. Results indicated a homogenous pattern of age-related Glu/Cr decreases across PFC regions, while age-related changes in GABA/Cr were heterogenous, with a mix of stable and decreasing age effects. Importantly, balance between glutamate/Cr and GABA/Cr in areas of prefrontal cortex increased through adolescence, suggesting the presence of critical period plasticity in PFC at this significant time of development when adult trajectories are established.

PURPOSE: To describe and implement a strategy for dynamic slice-by-slice and multiband B0 shimming using spherical harmonic shims in the human brain at 7T. THEORY: For thin axial slices, spherical harmonic shims can be divided into pairs of shims (z-degenerate and non-z-degenerate) that are spatially degenerate, such that only ½ of the shims (non-z-degenerate) are required for single slice optimizations. However, when combined, the pairs of shims can be used to simultaneously generate the same in-plane symmetries but with different amplitudes as a function of their z location. This enables multiband shimming equivalent to that achievable by single slice-by-slice optimization. METHODS: All data were acquired at 7T using a spherical harmonic shim insert enabling shimming up through 4th order with two additional 5th order shims (1st-4th+). Dynamic shim updating was achieved using a 10A shim power supply with 2 ms ramps and constrained optimizations to minimize eddy currents. RESULTS: In groups of eight subjects, we demonstrated that: 1) dynamic updating using 1st-4th+ order shims reduced the SD of the B0 field over the whole brain from 32.4 ± 2.6 and 24.9 ± 2 Hz with 1st-2nd and 1st-4th+ static global shimming to 15.1 ± 1.7 Hz; 2) near equivalent performance was achieved when dynamically updating only the non-z-degenerate shims (14.3 ± 1.5 Hz), or when a using multiband shim factor of 2, MBs = 2, and all shims (14.4 ± 2.0 Hz). CONCLUSION: High order spherical harmonics provide substantial improvements over static global shimming and enable dynamic multiband shimming with near equivalent performance to that of dynamic slice-by-slice shimming. This reduces distortion in echo planar imaging.

We report our PET/MRI experience from a pilot study that compared the diagnostic performance of 18F-FDG PET/MRI versus PET/CT in staging of cervical cancer. Methods: Six adults with newly diagnosed cervical cancer underwent a single 18F-FDG injection with a dual-imaging protocol: standard-of-care PET/CT followed by research PET/MRI. The diagnostic interpretation and SUVmax for the 2 modalities were compared. Results: Both modalities detected all primary tumors (median size, 3.9 cm) and all 4 metastases present in 2 of the 6 patients (median size, 0.9 cm). PET/MRI provided greater diagnostic confidence than PET/CT and upstaged the disease in 4 patients. On the basis of the imaging findings alone, the additional information from PET/MRI would have led to a change in clinical management in 3 of 6 patients. The primary lesion showed a median SUV of 12.8 on PET/CT and 18.2 on PET/MRI (P = 0.03). SUVs, however, correlated strongly between the 2 modalities (ρ = 0.96, P

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) constitute a variety of neoplastic entities and exhibit variable degrees of neuroendocrine differentiation and phenotypes, as well as genetic profiles. Ga-DOTATATE PET is a novel imaging technique for NET. Although PET/CT is commonly utilized for oncologic imaging, PET/MRI is particularly suited for NETs, as MRI provides greater soft tissue contrast than CT, allowing for improved detection and characterization of NETs, particularly when liver metastasis is suspected or needs to be ruled out. The current pictorial review aims to illustrate the complementary advantages, as well as pitfalls of Ga-DOTATATE PET/MRI in the evaluation of NETs.

Purpose To overcome existing challenges in dynamic B0 shimming by implementing a shim optimization algorithm which limits shim current amplitudes and their temporal variation through the application of constraints and regularization terms. Theory and methods Spherical harmonic dynamic B0 shimming is complicated by eddy currents, ill-posed optimizations, and the need for strong power supplies. Based on the fact that eddy current amplitudes are proportional to the magnitude of the shim current changes, and assuming a smoothness of the B0 inhomogeneity variation in the slice direction, a novel algorithm was implemented to reduce eddy current generation by limiting interslice shim current changes. Shim degeneracy issues and resulting high current amplitudes are additionally addressed by penalizing high solution norms. Applicability of the proposed algorithm was validated in simulations and in phantom and in vivo measurements. Results High-order dynamic shimming simulations and measurements have shown that absolute shim current amplitudes and their temporal variation can be substantially reduced with negligible loss in achievable B0 homogeneity. Whereas conventional dynamic shim updating optimizations improve the B0 homogeneity, on average, by a factor of 2.1 over second-order static solutions, our proposed routine reached a factor of 2.0, while simultaneously providing a 14-fold reduction of the average maximum shim current changes. Conclusions The proposed algorithm substantially reduces the shim amplitudes and their temporal variation, while only marginally affecting the achievable B0 homogeneity. As a result, it has the potential to mitigate the remaining challenges in dynamic B0 shimming and help in making its application more readily available.

Purpose T2 -weighted lesional imaging is most commonly performed using inversion recovery turbo spin echoes. At 7 T, however, this acquisition is limited for specific absorption rate and resolution. This work describes and implements a method to generate CSF-suppressed T2 -weighted imaging. Methods The strategy uses a driven equilibrium spin-echo preparation within an inversion recovery with multiple 3D gradient-echo imaging blocks. Images are combined using the self-normalization approach, which achieves CSF suppression through optimized timing of individual blocks and minimizes sources of variation due to coil receptivity, T2 * , and proton density. Simulations of the magnetization-prepared fluid-attenuated inversion recovery gradient-echo (MPFLAGRE) method over T1 and T2 relaxation values are performed, and in vivo demonstrations using an 8 × 2 transceiver array in healthy controls are shown. Results The specific absorption rate of the calculated MPFLAGRE sequence is 11.1 ± 0.5 W (n = 5 volunteers), which is 74 ± 2% of the US Food and Drug Administration guidelines. This method acquires both contrasts for CSF suppression with detection of long T2 components and T2 -weighted imaging in a single acquisition. In healthy controls, the former contrast generates increased signal in the cortical rim and ependyma. A comparison is shown with a conventional 3D SPACE fluid-attenuated inversion recovery acquisition, and sensitivity to pathology is demonstrated in an epilepsy patient. Conclusion As applied with the 8 × 2 transceiver, the MPFLAGRE sequence generates both whole-brain contrast suitable for lesional and T2 -weighted imaging at 7 T in fewer than 10 minutes within the US Food and Drug Administration's specific absorption rate guidelines.

Hybrid imaging with F-18 fludeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (FDG PET/MRI) has increasing clinical applications supplementing conventional ultrasound, CT, and MRI imaging as well as hybrid PET/CT imaging in assessing cervical, endometrial, and ovarian cancer. This article summarizes the existing literature and discusses the emerging role of hybrid PET/MRI in gynecologic malignancies. Thus, far, the published literature on the applications of FDG PET/MRI shows that it can have a significant impact on patient management by improving the staging of the cancers compared with PET/CT, influencing clinical decision and treatment strategy. For disease restaging, current literature indicates that PET/MRI performs equivalently to PET/CT. There appears to be a mild-moderate inverse correlation between standard-uptake-value (SUV) and apparent-diffusion-coefficient (ADC) values, which could be used to predict tumor grading and risk stratification. It remains to be seen as to whether multi-parametric PET/MRI imaging could prove valuable for prognostication and outcome. PET/MRI provides the opportunity for reduced radiation exposure, which is particularly relevant for a young female in need of multiple scans for treatment monitoring and follow-up. Fast acquisition protocols and optimized methods for attenuation correction are still evolving. Major limitations of PET/MRI remains such as suboptimal detection of small pulmonary nodules and lack of utility for radiation treatment planning, which pose an impediment in making PET/MRI a viable one-stop-shop imaging option to compete with PET/CT.

CONCLUSION: High order spherical harmonics provide substantial improvements over static global shimming and enable dynamic multi-band shimming with near equivalent performance to that of dynamic slice-by-slice shimming. This reduces distortion in echo-planar imaging.

Haptoglobin's (Hp) main role is to bind free hemoglobin (Hb), reducing its oxidative potential. The Hp–Hb complex formed is cleared from the circulation by macrophage receptor CD163. In diabetes, impaired Hp 2-2–Hb CD163 clearance and abnormal glomerular permeability allow the large Hp 2-2–Hb complex to cross the barrier, where its redox active iron leads to cellular toxicity. Although Hp 2-2 predicts renal function decline, whether renal iron deposition differs by Hp is unknown. We used renal quantitative T2* magnetic resonance imaging to estimate iron level in the cortex and medullar of type 1 diabetes (T1D) adults [15 Hp 1-1 and 15 Hp 2-2 carriers of similar age (53 years), duration (45 years), and gender]. Increased vascular cell adhesion (hyperadhesion) to the endothelium is responsible for the hallmark acute pain episodes, or vaso-occlusive crises (VOC), of sickle cell disease. The integrin αvβ3 plays an important role in VOC since it mediates sickle red blood cell adhesion to the endothelium, a process that leads to ischemia and painful bone infarction. In the pilot study presented herein, we hypothesized that real-time imaging of hyperadhesion could quantify VOC severity and identify the most vulnerable anatomical sites. We also hypothesized that harnessing hyperadhesion as a proximate event in VOC would provide sensitive, objective evidence of VOC before pain has developed. Specifically, we tested whether positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of integrin αvβ3 using the PET tracer 68Ga-PRGD2 would successfully image hyperadhesion associated with VOC in a patient with sickle cell disease. We observed persistently higher tracer uptake in the femurs during VOC compared to baseline. In the vessel, after an initial and transient increase during VOC, blood pool activity was similar between baseline and VOC. These findings suggest that PET imaging of integrin αvβ3 may be a valuable strategy for imaging of VOC.

Accurate individualized muscle architecture data are crucial for generating subject-specific musculoskeletal models to investigate movement and dynamic muscle function. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has emerged as a promising method of gathering muscle architecture data in vivo; however, its accuracy in estimating parameters such as muscle fiber lengths for creating subject-specific musculoskeletal models has not been tested. Here, we provide a validation of the method of using anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and DTI to gather muscle architecture data in vivo by directly comparing those data obtained from MR scans of three human cadaveric lower limbs to those from dissections. DTI was used to measure fiber lengths and pennation angles, while the anatomical images were used to estimate muscle mass, which were used to calculate physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA). The same data were then obtained through dissections, where it was found that on average muscle masses and fiber lengths matched well between the two methods (4% and 1% differences, respectively), while PCSA values had slightly larger differences (6%). Overall, these results suggest that DTI is a promising technique to gather in vivo muscle architecture data, but further refinement and complementary imaging techniques may be needed to realize these goals.

PURPOSE: Instillation of novel contrast mixture (NCM) was recently shown to improve the contrast resolution of rat bladder wall with high contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Here, the clinical safety and the feasibility of NCM-enhanced MRI to achieve artifact-free visualization of human bladder wall suitable for quantitative measurement of the magnetic resonance (MR) longitudinal relaxation time (T1) was assessed. METHODS: Six female subjects [two controls and two with Hunner-type interstitial cystitis IC and two with non-Hunner-type IC] consented for MRI at 3 T before and after instillation of NCM [4 mM gadobutrol and 5 mM ferumoxytol in 50 mL of sterile water for injection]. Single breath-hold fast MR acquisition in large readout bandwidth for 5-mm-thick single slice with variable flip angle was applied to minimize the motion and chemical shift artifacts in measurements of bladder wall thickness (BWT), CNR and T1 from 20 pixels. RESULTS: NCM instillation in subjects did not evoke pain or discomfort. Fourfold increase in bladder wall CNR (*p < 0.02) and pixel size of 0.35 mm with minimal influence of artifacts allowed accurate determination of bladder wall thinning ~ 0.46 mm from 50 mL NCM (*p < 0.05). Pre-contrast bladder wall T1 of 1544 ± 34.2 ms was shortened to 860.09 ± 13.95 ms in Hunner-type IC (*p < 0.0001) relative to only 1257.42 ± 20.59 and 1258.16 ± 6.16 ms in non-Hunner-type IC and controls, respectively. CONCLUSION: Findings demonstrate the safety and feasibility of NCM-enhanced MRI to achieve artifact-free differential contrast and spatial resolution of human bladder wall, which is suitable for measuring BWT and pixel-wise measurement of T1 in post-contrast setting.

Compatible dual-echo arteriovenography (CODEA) is a recent MRI technique for simultaneous acquisition of an MR angiogram (MRA) and MR venogram (MRV) with image quality comparable to conventional single-echo acquisitions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of CODEA in imaging patients with chronic stroke and to test the utility of a new image representation technique (“enhanced maximum intensity projection [MIP]") based on tissue segmentation, intensity inversion, and vessel enhancement filtering) for MRV. Arterial and venous abnormalities associated with stroke were delineated on MRA and MRV acquired simultaneously with the CODEA technique. CODEA MRV displayed with the enhanced MIP technique facilitated the visualization of the overall venous structures in 3D. Reduced venous vascularity was detected in the regions of arterial occlusion compared to the contralateral normal brain regions. The CODEA technique along with the enhanced MIP technique may be valuable, particularly in clinical applications that require efficient MRA/MRV imaging because of limited scan time such as in acute stroke. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The neural specificity of hemodynamic-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signals are dependent on both the vascular regulation and the sensitivity of the applied fMRI technique to different types and sizes of blood vessels. In order to examine the specificity of MRI-detectable hemodynamic responses, submillimeter blood oxygenation-level dependent (BOLD) and cerebral blood volume (CBV) fMRI studies were performed in a well-established cat orientation column model at 9.4 Tesla. Neural-nonspecific and -specific signals were separated by comparing the fMRI responses of orthogonal orientation stimuli. The BOLD response was dominantly neural-nonspecific, mostly originating from pial and intracortical emerging veins, and thus was highly correlated with baseline blood volume. Uneven baseline CBV may displace or distort small functional domains in high-resolution BOLD maps. The CBV response in the parenchyma exhibited dual spatiotemporal characteristics, a fast and early neural-nonspecific response (with 4.3-s time constant) and a slightly slower and delayed neural-specific response (with 9.4-s time constant). The nonspecific CBV signal originates from early-responding arteries and arterioles, while the specific CBV response, which is not correlated with baseline blood volume, arises from late-responding microvessels including small pre-capillary arterioles and capillaries. Our data indicate that although the neural specificity of CBV fMRI signals is dependent on stimulation duration, high-resolution functional maps can be obtained from steady-state CBV studies.

Study Design. Development of a dual-tuned proton/sodium radiofrequency (RF) coil for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the rabbit spine and quantification of sodium concentration in intervertebral discs. Objective. To develop the dual-tuned proton/sodium MRI of rabbit lumbar spine to investigate proteoglycan matrix content and intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). Summary of Background Data. IDD is a common chronic condition that may lead to back pain, limited activity, and disability. Early-stage IDD involves the loss of proteoglycan matrix and water content in the disc. Sodium MRI is a promising noninvasive technique for quantitative measurement of proteoglycan changes associated with IDD. The combined structural (proton) and biochemical (sodium) MRI facilitates the investigation of morphological and molecular changes associated with degeneration of discs. Methods. Multichannel dual-tuned proton/sodium transceiver RF coil of the rabbit spine was developed and optimized at 3T human scanner—8 channels allocated for the sodium coil and 4 channels for the proton coil. High-resolution anatomy proton images of the discs were acquired using turbo spin echo and dual echo steady state sequence. Sodium concentration of the discs was quantified from sodium magnetic resonance (MR) images that were calibrated for signal attenuation because of RF field inhomogeneity, sodium MR relaxation times, and disc thickness. Twelve rabbits (∼1-yr old, female, 5.2 ± 0.4 kg) were used for measuring disc sodium concentration. Results. High-resolution in vivo proton and sodium MR images of rabbit discs (≤2-mm thickness) were successfully obtained using an in-house dual-tuned proton/sodium RF coil at 3T. The total acquisition time for each set of images was approximately 40 minutes. Sodium concentration of normal rabbit lumbar discs was measured at 269.7 ± 6.3 mM, and this measurement was highly reproducible, with 5.3% of coefficient of variation. Conclusion. Sodium concentrations of rabbit lumbar discs were reliably measured using our newly developed dual-tuned multichannel proton/sodium RF coil at 3T.

Purpose: To implement a dual-echo sequence MRI technique at 7T for simultaneous acquisition of time-of-flight (TOF) MR angiogram (MRA) and blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) MR venogram (MRV) in a single MR acquisition and to compare the image qualities with those acquired at 3T. Materials and Methods: We implemented a dual-echo sequence with an echo-specific k-space reordering scheme to uncouple the scan parameter requirements for MRA and MRV at 7T. The MRA and MRV vascular contrast was enhanced by maximally separating the k-space center regions acquired for the MRA and MRV and by adjusting and applying scan parameters compatible between the MRA and MRV. The same imaging sequence was implemented at 3T. Four normal subjects were imaged at both 3T and 7T. MRA and MRV at 7T were reconstructed both with and without phase-mask filtering and were compared quantitatively and qualitatively with those at 3T with phase-mask filtering. Results: The depiction of small cortical arteries and veins on MRA and MRV at 7T was substantially better than that at 3T, due to about twice higher contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) for both arteries (164 ±57 vs. 77 ± 26) and veins (72 ± 8 vs. 36 ± 6). Even without use of the phase-masking filtering, the venous contrast at 7T (65 ± 7) was higher than that with the filtering at 3T (36 ± 6). Conclusion: The dual-echo arteriovenography technique we implemented at 7T allows the improved visualization of small vessels in both the MRA and MRV because of the greatly increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and susceptibility contrast, compared to 3T. The inhomogeneity of a local magnetic field causes an image artifact of geometric distortion and intensity abnormality because of the slice offset and readout shift in slice-selective MR imaging. It has been found that this artifact can be corrected by the projection of the slice offset onto the readout axis at a certain oblique slice angle. The slice angle for the artifact correction is determined by the amplitude of slice selection and readout gradients, and is independent of the magnetic field inhomogeneity and the main magnetic field direction. In addition, the existing view-angle tilting technique is found to be valid only for the slice orientation orthogonal to the object axis. The slice angle effect on the inhomogeneity artifact was confirmed experimentally through phantom and volunteer's head imaging for both regular and view-angle tilted spin echo sequences at 3 T. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Concepts Magn Reson Part A 34A: 238–248, 2009.

An improved dual-echo sequence magentic resonance (MR) imaging technique was developed to simultaneously acquire a time-of-flight MR angiogram (MRA) and a blood oxygenation level-dependent MR venogram (MRV) in a single MR acquisition at 3 T. MRA and MRV require conflicting scan conditions (e.g., excitation RF profile, flip angle, and spatial presaturation pulse) for their optimal image quality. This conflict was not well counterbalanced or reconciled in previous methods reported for simultaneous acquisition of MRA and MRV. In our dual-echo sequence method, an echo-specific K-space reordering scheme was used to uncouple the scan parameter requirements for MRA and MRV. The MRA and MRV vascular contrast was enhanced by maximally separating the K-space center regions acquired for the MRA and MRV, and by adjusting and applying scan parameters compatible between the MRA and MRV. As a preliminary result, we were able to acquire a simultaneous dual-echo MRA and MRV with image quality comparable to that of the conventional single-echo MRA and MRV that were acquired separately at two different sessions. Furthermore, integrated with tilted optimized nonsaturating excitation and multiple overlapping thin-slab acquisition techniques, our dual-echo MRA and MRV provided seamless vascular continuity over a large coverage volume of the brain anatomy. Whether conventional gradient-echo (GE) blood oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is able to map submillimeter-scale functional columns remains debatable mainly because of the spatially nonspecific large vessel contribution, poor sensitivity and reproducibility, and lack of independent evaluation. Furthermore, if the results from optical imaging of intrinsic signals are directly applicable, regions with the highest BOLD signals may indicate neurally inactive domains rather than active columns when multiple columns are activated. To examine these issues, we performed BOLD fMRI at a magnetic field of 9.4 tesla to map orientation-selective columns of isoflurane-anesthetized cats. We could not convincingly map orientation columns using conventional block-design stimulation and differential analysis method because of large fluctuations of signals. However, we successfully obtained GE BOLD iso-orientation maps with high reproducibility (r = 0.74) using temporally encoded continuous cyclic orientation stimulation with Fourier data analysis, which reduces orientation-nonselective signals such as draining artifacts and is less sensitive to signal fluctuations. We further reduced large vessel contribution using the improved spin-echo (SE) BOLD method but with overall decreased sensitivity. Both GE and SE BOLD iso-orientation maps excluding large pial vascular regions were significantly correlated to maps with a known neural interpretation, which were obtained in contrast agent-aided cerebral blood volume fMRI and total hemoglobin-based optical imaging of intrinsic signals at a hemoglobin iso-sbestic point (570 nm). These results suggest that, unlike the expectation from deoxyhemoglobin-based optical imaging studies, the highest BOLD signals are localized to the sites of increased neural activity when column-nonselective signals are suppressed.

Since changes in oxygen consumption induced by active neurons are specific to cortical columns, the small and transient "dip" of deoxyhemoglobin signal, which indicates an increase in oxygen consumption, has been of great interest. In this study, we succeeded in enhancing and sustaining the dip in the deoxyhemoglobin-weighted 620-nm intrinsic optical imaging signals from a 10-s orientation-selective stimulation in cat visual cortex by reducing arterial blood pressure with sodium nitroprusside (a vasodilator) to mitigate the contribution of stimulus-induced blood supply. During this condition, intact spiking activity and a significant reduction of stimulus-induced blood volume changes (570-nm intrinsic signals) were confirmed. The deoxyhemoglobin signal from the prolonged dip was highly localized to iso-orientation domains only during the initial approximately 2 s; the signal specificity weakened over time although the domains were still resolvable after 2 s. The most plausible explanation for this time-dependent spatial specificity is that deoxyhemoglobin induced by oxygen consumption drains from active sites, where spiking activity occurs, to spatially non-specific downstream vessels over time. Our results suggest that the draining effect of pial and intracortical veins in dHb-based imaging techniques, such as blood oxygenation-level dependent (BOLD) functional MRI, is intrinsically unavoidable and reduces its spatial specificity of dHb signal regardless of whether the stimulus-induced blood supply is spatially specific.

The purpose of this study was to compare multiphasic perfusion computed tomography (CT) with diffusion and perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in predicting final infarct volume, infarct growth, and clinical severity in patients with hyperacute ischemia untreated by thrombolytic therapy.Multiphasic perfusion CT was performed in 19 patients with ischemic stroke within 6 hours of symptom onset. Two CT maps of peak and total perfusion were generated from CT data. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and perfusion MRI were obtained within 150 minutes after CT. Lesion volumes on CT and MRI were compared with final infarct volume and clinical scores, and mismatch on CT or MRI was compared with infarct growth.The lesion volume on the CT total perfusion map strongly correlated with MRI relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV), and that on the CT peak perfusion map strongly correlated with MRI relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and rCBV (P0.001). The lesion volume on unenhanced CT or DWI moderately correlated with final infarct volume, but only lesion volume on unenhanced CT weakly correlated with baseline clinical scores (P = 0.024). The lesion volumes on the CT peak perfusion map and MRI rCBF similarly correlated with final infarct volume and clinical scores and more strongly than those on mean transit time (MTT) or time to peak (TTP). DWI-rCBF or CT mismatch was more predictive of infarct growth than DWI-MTT or DWI-TTP mismatch.Multiphasic perfusion CT is useful and of comparable utility to diffusion and perfusion MRI for predicting final infarct volume, infarct growth, and clinical severity in acute ischemic stroke.

Objective: To determine the utility of perfusion MR imaging in the differential diagnosis of brain tumors. Materials and Methods: Fifty-seven patients with pathologically proven brain tumors (21 high-grade gliomas, 8 low-grade gliomas, 8 lymphomas, 6 hemangioblastomas, 7 metastases, and 7 various other tumors) were included in this study. Relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) and time-to-peak (TTP) ratios were quantitatively analyzed and the rCBV grade of each tumor was also visually assessed on an rCBV map. Results: The highest rCBV ratios were seen in hemangioblastomas, followed by high-grade gliomas, metastases, low-grade gliomas, and lymphomas. There was no significant difference in TTP ratios between each tumor group (p>0.05). At visual assessment, rCBV was high in 17 (81%) of 21 high-grade gliomas and in 4 (50%) of 8 low-grade gliomas. Hemangioblastomas showed the highest rCBV and lymphomas the lowest. Conclusion: Perfusion MR imaging may be helpful in the differentiation of thevarious solid tumors found in the brain, and in assessing the grade of the various glial tumors occurring there.

To develop a fully automated method to segment cartilage from the magnetic resonance (MR) images of knee and to evaluate the performance of the method on a public, open dataset.The segmentation scheme consisted of three procedures: multiple-atlas building, applying a locally weighted vote (LWV), and region adjustment. In the atlas building procedure, all training cases were registered to a target image by a nonrigid registration scheme and the best matched atlases selected. A LWV algorithm was applied to merge the information from these atlases and generate the initial segmentation result. Subsequently, for the region adjustment procedure, the statistical information of bone, cartilage, and surrounding regions was computed from the initial segmentation result. The statistical information directed the automated determination of the seed points inside and outside bone regions for the graph-cut based method. Finally, the region adjustment was conducted by the revision of outliers and the inclusion of abnormal bone regions.A total of 150 knee MR images from a public, open dataset (available atwww.ski10.org) were used for the development and evaluation of this approach. The 150 cases were divided into the training set (100 cases) and the test set (50 cases). The cartilages were segmented successfully in all test cases in an average of 40 min computation time. The average dice similarity coefficient was 71.7%±8.0% for femoral and 72.4%±6.9% for tibial cartilage.The authors have developed a fully automated segmentation program for knee cartilage from MR images. The performance of the program based on 50 test cases was highly promising.

To compare sodium ((23)Na) characteristics between native and transplanted kidneys using dual-tuned proton ((1)H)/sodium MRI.Six healthy volunteers and six renal transplant patients (3 normal function, 3 acute allograft rejection) were included. Proton/sodium MRI was obtained at 3 T using a dual-tuned coil. Signal to noise ratio (SNR), sodium concentration ([(23)Na]) and cortico-medullary sodium gradient (CMSG) were measured. Reproducibility of [(23)Na] measurement was also tested. SNR, [(23)Na] and CMSG of the native and transplanted kidneys were compared.Proton and sodium images of kidneys were successfully acquired. SNR and [(23)Na] measurements of the native kidneys were reproducible at two different sessions. [(23)Na] and CMSG of the transplanted kidneys was significantly lower than those of the native kidneys: 153.5 ± 11.9 vs. 192.9 ± 9.6 mM (P = 0.002) and 8.9 ± 1.5 vs. 10.5 ± 0.9 mM/mm (P = 0.041), respectively. [(23)Na] and CMSG of the transplanted kidneys with normal function vs. acute rejection were not statistically different.Sodium quantification of kidneys was reliably performed using proton/sodium MRI. [(23)Na] and CMSG of the transplanted kidneys were lower than those of the native kidneys, but without a statistically significant difference between patients with or without renal allograft rejection.Dual-tuned proton/sodium RF coil enables co-registered proton and sodium MRI. Structural and sodium biochemical property can be acquired by dual-tuned proton/sodium MRI. Sodium and sodium gradient of kidneys can be measured by dual-tuned MRI. Sodium concentration was lower in transplanted kidneys than in native kidneys. Sodium gradient of transplanted kidneys was lower than for native kidneys.

Ultraprecision metal cutting (UPMC) technology, which makes possible submicrometre form accuracy and nanometre roughness, is developed to reach the 1 nm nominal (undeformed) thickness of cut. At this thickness level, the finite element method (FEM) cannot be used to solve the problem. Molecular Dynamics can be applied to this small cutting depth. In this paper using molecular dynamics simulation, microcutting with a subnanometre chip thickness, the cutting mechanism for the microcutting condition, i.e. tool edge configuration, cut material and cutting speed, are evaluated. As the result, the simulation of the cutting mechanism at subnanometre depth of cut is evaluated.

Recently, research into the friction driver has been carried out to obtain a high resolution position. However, it is difficult to have that order of resolution because the friction driver has non-linear friction and traction between the roller and the slider. It is reported that if, as an external force, friction exists in the system, the system may be unstable in the steady state. In this paper, the stability of the friction driver is studied, for the device having two non-linear terms, friction and traction, and the effect of a controller on the stability is explored. The conclusions are that the derivative controller is an effective method of stabilizing the friction driver system.

Recently, the analysis of microcutting with a submicrometer depth of cut has been explored to ensure a higher quality surface product. To obtain a valuable result, another method, in place of the conventional finite-element method, must be considered because the finite-element method is impossible to use for a very small focused region and mesh size. As an alternative method, molecular dynamics or statics is suggested and accepted in the field of microcutting, indentation and crack propagation. In this paper, using molecular dynamics simulation, the phenomenon of microcutting with subnanometer chip thickness is studied, and the cutting mechanism for the tool-edge configuration is evaluated. As the result of the simulation, atomistic chip formation is achieved.

To develop quantitative dual-tuned (DT) (1) H/(23) Na MRI of human knee cartilage in vivo at 7 Tesla (T).A sensitive (23) Na transceiver array RF coil was developed at 7T. B1 fields generated by the transceiver array coil were characterized and corrected in the (23) Na images. Point spread function (PSF) of the (23) Na images was measured, and the signal decrease due to partial-volume-effect was compensated in [(23) Na] quantification of knee cartilage. SNR and [(23) Na] in anterior femoral cartilage were measured from seven healthy subjects.SNR of (23) Na image with the transceiver array coil was higher than that of birdcage coil. SNR in the cartilage at 2-mm isotropic resolution was 26.80 ± 3.69 (n = 7). B1 transmission and reception fields produced by the DT coil at 7T were similar to each other. Effective full-width-half-maximum of (23) Na image was ∼5 mm at 2-mm resolution. Mean [(23) Na] was 288.13 ± 29.50 mM (n = 7) in the anterior femoral cartilage of normal subjects.We developed a new high-sensitivity (23) Na RF coil for knee MRI at 7T. Our (1) H/(23) Na MRI allowed quantitative measurement of [(23) Na] in knee cartilage by measuring PSF and cartilage thickness from (23) Na and (1) H image, respectively.
