In this study, we examined the effects of a mother’s reading motivation on the home literacy environment. Seven hundred fifty-seven mothers with three to five year old children participated in this study and completed the Adult Motivation for Reading Scale and the Home Literacy Environment Questionnaire. The subcategories of the Adult Motivation for Reading Scale are “reading as part of self,” “reading efficacy,” “reading for recognition,” and “reading to do well in other realms.” The Home Literacy Environment Questionnaire has three subcategories, namely reading books, reading behavior and modeling of parents, and literacy learning. The mean, standard deviation, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The results showed that (1) the home literacy environment was significantly different depending on the mother’s education and family income levels, (2) the mother’s reading motivation also differed significantly depending on the mother’s education and family income levels, and (3) the mother’s reading motivation has a significant explanatory effect on the home literacy environment. In addition, the mothers falling into the reading motivation subcategories of “reading part of self” or “reading to do well in other realms” were found to enrich their home literacy environment. Therefore, this study demonstrates that the mother’s reading motivation is an important factor affecting the home literacy environment.

본 연구는 영아반의 하루 일과를 관찰하여 실내자유놀이, 실외놀이, 집단활동 및 낮잠 휴식 등의 일과를 구성하는 주요 요소들이 진행된 시간들을 바탕으로 하루일과의 유형을 분석하였다. 그리 고 일과유형에 따라 영아의 놀이성, 교사의 학력 및 경력, 교사행동에서 어떠한 차이를 보이는지 살펴보았다. 연구결과, 영아반의 일과유형은 ‘실내 외놀이 지향형’과 ‘낮잠 휴식 및 집단활동 지향 형’ 등 2가지로 분류되었다. 일과유형별 영아의 놀이성의 차이를 살펴본 결과, ‘실내 외놀이 지향 형’이 ‘낮잠 휴식 및 집단활동 지향형’보다 영아의 놀이성 전체점수와 하위영역인 신체적 자발성, 즐거움의 표현, 유모감각에서 유의하게 높은 점수를 보였다. 그리고 일과유형에 따라 교사의 학 력은 유의한 차이가 없었으나 교사의 경력에서는 ‘실내 외놀이 지향형’ 학급의 교사경력이 ‘낮잠 휴식 및 집단활동 지향형’ 학급의 교사경력보다 유의하게 더 많았다. 교사의 상호작용행동에서도 유의한 차이가 나타나 ‘실내·외놀이 지향형’ 일과의 교사가 ‘낮잠 휴식 및 집단활동 지향형’의 일 과를 운영하는 교사보다 긍정적 지도행동과 중립적 지도행동을 유의하게 더 많이 보였다.

This study examined the emergent literacy development of children and the effects of the home literacy environment on it. 861 pairs each-consisting of a mother and a child aged from three to six years old were asked to complete the early literacy parent questionnaire (Boudreau, 2005) and the home literacy environment questionnaire (Park & Kim, 2008). The results showed that : (1) girls achieved higher scores than boys in emergent literacy and its subcategories. (2) there were age differences in all of the subcategories of emergent literacy except the categories of `orientation toward literacy` and `phonological awareness`. (3) The study revealed that `reading books` in the home literacy environment was the most contributive variable in predicting emergent literacy after controlling the age and gender followed by `literacy learning`

This study explores the types of daily routines in child care centers based on the time planned for indoor free choice activities, outdoor activities, group activities and nap/rest. The daily routine plans of 63 classes of 0 to 2-yearolds and 51 classes of 3 to 5-year-olds were cluster analyzed. Also, openness and closeness of child care programs as well as the most participated indoor/outdoor activities were examined using questionnaires developed for teachers. The results were as follows: First, teachers planned the most time for free play choice activity and comparatively less time for outdoor play during the day. Time for rest and naps were planned more for 0-2 year-olds whereas group activities were planned more for the 3-5 year-olds. Second, 3 daily routine types were found in the daily plans of child care centers, such as “Low-Activity Oriented,” “Free Choice Activity Oriented” and “Group Activity Oriented” in 0 to 2-year-old classes and 3 to 5-year-old classes. Also, “Group Activity Oriented” type in 0 to 2-year-old classes showed more “closed” child care programs than the “Free Choice Activity Oriented” type. However, no difference was shown among the 3 types of daily routines in the openness and closeness of 3 to 5-year-old child care programs. Finally, all children, regardless of the types of daily routine, participated most in block activity and role play indoors and fixed-play equipment, sand play and free play outdoors.

This study evaluated the types of daily routines that occurred in child care centers based on four general categorizations: time spent on indoor free choice activities, outdoor activities, group activities and special activities. In addition, resulting child care teacher behaviors were examined based on daily routine types. A total 23 classes' activity times and teacher behaviors were observed. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, hierarchical cluster, and Mann-Whitney U. Results indicated that there were 2 principle daily routine, 'indoor/outdoor activity time oriented' and 'group activity time oriented'. Analysis showed that teachers who belonged to the 'indoor/outdoor activity time oriented' type showed more positive affect, positive guidance, neural guidance, and less non-involved behavior. Results suggest the importance of time spent on free choice activities in the context of daily routine for quality childcare.

This study was conducted in order to develop a Children`s Playfulness Rating Scale(CPRS) and to analyze it in terms of item discrimination, validity, and reliability. The participants in this study consisted of 861 parents whose children were aged from three to six years old. The item discrimination, determined by comparing the highest and lowest group using , Cramer`s V, was found to be satisfactory. The reliability of factors, as measured by Cronbach`s , ranged from .85 to .95. The results of factor analysis identified 4 factors and 35 items were then selected from the 45 items in the original scale. The four factors identified were as follows; (1) leading participation (2) cognitive flexibility (3) expression of joy (4) voluntary full immersion. Concurrent validity was also established by using correlations between the CPRS and CPS(Children`s Playfulness Scale). In conclusion, these results demonstrated that the Children`s Playfulness Rating Scale is both reliable and valid.

This study investigated the pathways of factors affecting 173 employed mothers' second childbirth plans. Participants were all employed working mothers with an infant under 10 months old. The hypothetical model used in this research proposed that workplace childcare support, social support, value of children and parenting stress of employed mothers will directly affect second childbirth plans. Additionally, workplace childcare support, social support, value of children, marital satisfaction and job satisfaction will indirectly influence second childbirth plans as a result of parenting stress. The results of this research demonstrated that value of children and parenting stress were the factors which directly affected second childbirth plans of employed mothers. In addition, workplace childcare support, social support, marital satisfaction and job satisfaction indirectly influenced second childbirth plans as a result of parenting stress. This study suggests the need for the establishment and development of workplace childcare support and the need for enhancing the value of children. This research further suggests the need for policies aimed at increasing psychological well-being and decreasing parenting stress for working mothers who are contemplating second childbirth plans

The purpose of this study was to investigate the reading habits, reading patterns and reading motivation of 362 college students from the capital area majoring in child development or early childhood education. The main findings of this study were as follows. Firstly, 70 percent of students spent less than three hours a week on reading academic or school-related material, and 75 percent spent less than three hours a week on independent or recreational reading. Students most preferred reading the "cultural" genre and least preferred reading the "human life(spiritual)" genre. The "cultural" and the "human life(spiritual)" genres also represented the most and least frequently read genres, respectively. Secondly, students presented high-level reading patterns, in that they previewed the reading material before reading, understood the meaning of it during reading, and shared their reading experience with others after reading. Thirdly, the average reading motivation levels scored near the midpoint on a five-point scale. Fourthly, students with higher reading motivation levels displayed higher reading frequencies and preference levels for each genre, with the exception of the "fiction and humor" genre. Moreover, students with higher levels of reading motivation received higher ratings for their reading patterns.

We report genetic maps for diploid (D) and tetraploid (AtDt) Gossypium genomes composed of sequence-tagged sites (STS) that foster structural, functional, and evolutionary genomic studies. The maps include, respectively, 2584 loci at 1.72-cM (∼600 kb) intervals based on 2007 probes (AtDt) and 763 loci at 1.96-cM (∼500 kb) intervals detected by 662 probes (D). Both diploid and tetraploid cottons exhibit negative crossover interference; i.e., double recombinants are unexpectedly abundant. We found no major structural changes between Dt and D chromosomes, but confirmed two reciprocal translocations between At chromosomes and several inversions. Concentrations of probes in corresponding regions of the various genomes may represent centromeres, while genome-specific concentrations may represent heterochromatin. Locus duplication patterns reveal all 13 expected homeologous chromosome sets and lend new support to the possibility that a more ancient polyploidization event may have predated the A-D divergence of 6–11 million years ago. Identification of SSRs within 312 RFLP sequences plus direct mapping of 124 SSRs and exploration for CAPS and SNPs illustrate the “portability” of these STS loci across populations and detection systems useful for marker-assisted improvement of the world's leading fiber crop. These data provide new insights into polyploid evolution and represent a foundation for assembly of a finished sequence of the cotton genome.
