Abstract

The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L., 1758) is a temperate fish species native to the northern Atlantic Ocean. The distinctive pink–red flesh color (i.e., pigmentation) significantly affects the market price. Flesh paleness leads to customer dissatisfaction, a loss of competitiveness, a drop in product value and, consequently, severe economic losses. This work extends our knowledge on salmonid carotenoid dynamics to include the interaction between the gut microbiota and flesh color. A significant association between the flesh color and abundance of specific bacterial communities in the gut microbiota suggests that color may be affected either by seeding resilient beneficial bacteria or by inhibiting the negative effect of pathogenic bacteria. We sampled 96 fish, which covered all phenotypes of flesh color, including the average color and the evenness of color of different areas of the fillet, at both the distal intestine and the pyloric caeca of each individual, followed by 16S rRNA sequencing at the V3-V4 region. The microbiota profiles of these two gut regions were significantly different; however, there was a consistency in the microbiota, which correlated with the flesh color. Moreover, the pyloric caeca microbiota also showed high correlation with the evenness of the flesh color (beta diversity index, PERMANOVA, p = 0.002). The results from the pyloric caeca indicate that Carnobacterium, a group belonging to the lactic acid bacteria, is strongly related to the flesh color and the evenness of the color between the flesh areas.

Abstract

Tommey and Hogan [Phys. Rev. A, 104, 033305 (2021)] have reported a matter-wave interference experiment using Rydberg atoms traveling through inhomogeneous electric fields at approximately 2000 m/s. Using a simplified model containing the essential physics of their experiment, we show that the phase difference measured by their observed interference fringes does not depend -- in any significant way -- on the acceleration of the Rydberg atoms, but instead simply on the uniform motion of the atoms through the inhomogeneous electric field., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

Let $k$ be a field, let ${\sf C}$ be a $k$-linear abelian category, let $\underline{\mathcal{L}}:=\{\mathcal{L}_{i}\}_{i \in \mathbb{Z}}$ be a sequence of objects in ${\sf C}$, and let $B_{\underline{\mathcal{L}}}$ be the associated orbit algebra. We describe sufficient conditions on $\underline{\mathcal{L}}$ such that there is a canonical morphism from the noncommutative space ${\sf Proj }B_{\underline{\mathcal{L}}}$ to a noncommutative projective line in the sense of \cite{abstractp1}, generalizing the usual construction of a map from a scheme $X$ to $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ defined by an invertible sheaf $\mathcal{L}$ generated by two global sections. Abstract

We study the forces and torques experienced by pill-shaped Janus particles of different aspect ratios where half of the surface obeys the no-slip boundary condition and the other half obeys the Navier slip condition of varying slip lengths. Using a recently developed boundary integral formulation whereby the traditional singular behaviour of this approach is removed analytically, we quantify the strength of the forces and torques experienced by such particles in a uniform flow field in the Stokes regime. Depending on the aspect ratio and the slip length, the force transverse to the flow direction can change sign. This is a novel property unique to the Janus nature of the particles.

Abstract

A formulation of the boundary integral method for solving partial differential equations has been developed whereby the usual weakly singular integral and the Cauchy principal value integral can be removed analytically. The broad applicability of the approach is illustrated with a number of problems of practical interest to fluid and continuum mechanics including the solution of the Laplace equation for potential flow, the Helmholtz equation as well as the equations for Stokes flow and linear elasticity.

A non-singular formulation of the boundary integral method (BIM) is presented for the Laplace equation whereby the well-known singularities that arise from the fundamental solution are eliminated analytically. A key advantage of this approach is that numerical errors that arise due to the proximity of nodes located on osculating boundaries are suppressed. This is particularly relevant in multi-scale problems where high accuracy is required without undue increase in computational cost when the spacing between boundaries become much smaller than their characteristic dimensions. The elimination of the singularities means that standard quadrature can be used to evaluate the surface integrals and this results in about 60% savings in coding effort. The new formulation also affords a numerically robust way to calculate the potential close to the boundaries. Detailed implementations of this approach are illustrated with problems involving osculating boundaries, 2D domains with corners and a wave drag problem in a 3D semi-infinite domain. The explicit formulation of problems with axial symmetry is also given.

Abstract

This paper presents a re-formulation of the boundary integral method (BIM) for the Debye-Huckel model of molecular and colloidal electrostatics that removes the mathematical singularities that have been accepted as an intrinsic part of the conventional BIM. The essence of the present boundary regularized integral equation formulation consists of subtracting a known solution from the conventional BIM in such a way as to cancel out the singularities associated with the Green's function. This approach better reflects the non-singular physical behavior of the systems on boundaries with the benefits of (i) the surface integrals can be evaluated accurately using quadrature without any need to devise special numerical integration procedures, (ii) being able to use quadratic or spline function surface elements to represent the surface more accurately and the variation of the functions within each element is represented to a consistent level of precision by appropriate interpolation functions, (iii) being able to calculate electric fields, even at boundaries, accurately and directly from the potential without having to solve hypersingular integral equations and this imparts high precision in calculating the Maxwell stress tensor and consequently, intermolecular or colloidal forces, (iv) a reliable way to handle geometric configurations in which different parts of the boundary can be very close together without being affected by numerical instabilities, therefore potentials, fields and forces between surfaces can be found accurately at surface separations down to near contact, and (v) having the simplicity of a formulation that does not require complex algorithms to handle singularities will result in significant savings in coding effort and in the reduction of opportunities for coding errors. These advantages are illustrated using examples drawn from molecular and colloidal electrostatics.

Abstract

A boundary integral formulation for the solution of the Helmholtz equation is developed in which all traditional singular behaviour in the boundary integrals is removed analytically. The numerical precision of this approach is illustrated with calculation of the pressure field due to radiating bodies in acoustic wave problems. This method facilitates the use of higher order surface elements to represent boundaries, resulting in a significant reduction in the problem size with improved precision. Problems with extreme geometric aspect ratios can also be handled without diminished precision. When combined with the CHIEF method, uniqueness of the solution of the exterior acoustic problem is assured without the need to solve hypersingular integrals.

Abstract

Single-phase Stokes flow problems with prescribed boundary conditions can be formulated in terms of a boundary regularized integral equation that is completely free of singularities that exist in the traditional formulation. The usual mathematical singularities that arise from using the fundamental solution in the conventional boundary integral method are removed by subtracting a related auxiliary flow field, $\boldsymbol{w}$, that can be constructed from one of many known fundamental solutions of the Stokes equation. This approach is exact and does not require the introduction of additional cutoff parameters. The numerical implementation of this boundary regularized integral equation formulation affords considerable savings in coding effort with improved numerical accuracy. The high accuracy of this formulation is retained even in problems where parts of the boundaries may almost be in contact.

Abstract

The School Composition and the Black-White Achievement Gap study was undertaken by the National Center for Education Statistics to present both descriptive and associative information on the relationships among the percentage of students in a school who were Black (referred to as "Black student density" or "density"), the Black-White student academic performance gap, and student achievement. The study used data from the 2011 Grade 8 mathematics administration of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), along with data from the Common Core of Data (CCD). This methodology companion provides details and technical documentation for the two chapters of the report that use statistical analysis, namely those on: (1) the relationship between Black student density and achievement; and (2) the decomposition of the overall gap into between-school and within-school components. Abstract

School Composition and the Black-White Achievement Gap explores public schools' demographic composition, in particular, the proportion of Black students enrolled in schools (also referred to "Black student density" in schools) and its relation to the Black-White achievement gap. This NCES study, the first of its kind, used the 2011 NAEP grade 8 mathematics assessment data. As reported earlier, Black students at the national level, on average, scored 30 points lower than their White peers in 2011. Among the results highlighted in the report, the study indicates that the achievement gap between Black and White students remains whether schools fall in the highest density category (i.e., schools that composed of at least 60 percent Black students) or the lowest density category (i.e., schools that composed of less than or equal to 20 percent Black students). When accounting for factors such as student socioeconomic status and other student, teacher, and school characteristics, Black students, and Black male students in particular, scored lower in the highest- rather than the lowest density schools. Further, the portion of the Black-White achievement gap attributed to within-school differences (e.g., how schools internally distribute resources and treat students) is larger than the portion attributed to between-school differences (e.g., how schools vary in technology, updated textbooks, and qualified teachers). Abstract

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, such as fluoxetine (Prozac), are commonly prescribed pharmacotherapies for anxiety. Fluoxetine may be a useful adjunct because it can reduce the expression of learned fear in adult rodents. This effect is associated with altered expression of perineuronal nets (PNNs) in the amygdala and hippocampus, two brain regions that regulate fear. However, it is unknown whether fluoxetine has similar effects in adolescents. Here, we investigated the effect of fluoxetine exposure during adolescence or adulthood on context fear memory and PNNs in the basolateral amygdala (BLA), the CA1 subregion of the hippocampus, and the medial prefrontal cortex in rats. Fluoxetine impaired context fear memory in adults but not in adolescents. Further, fluoxetine increased the number of parvalbumin (PV)-expressing neurons surrounded by a PNN in the BLA and CA1, but not in the medial prefrontal cortex, at both ages. Contrary to previous reports, fluoxetine did not shift the percentage of PNNs toward non-PV cells in either the BLA or CA1 in the adults, or adolescents. These findings demonstrate that fluoxetine differentially affects fear memory in adolescent and adult rats but does not appear to have age-specific effects on PNNs.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to present the Asia-Pacific consensus on long-term and sequential therapy for osteoporosis, offering evidence-based recommendations for the effective management of this chronic condition. The primary focus is on achieving optimal fracture prevention through a comprehensive, individualized approach. METHODS: A panel of experts convened to develop consensus statements by synthesizing the current literature and leveraging clinical expertise. The review encompassed long-term anti-osteoporosis medication goals, first-line treatments for individuals at very high fracture risk, and the strategic integration of anabolic and antiresorptive agents in sequential therapy approaches. RESULTS: The panelists reached a consensus on 12 statements. Key recommendations included advocating for anabolic agents as the first-line treatment for individuals at very high fracture risk and transitioning to antiresorptive agents following the completion of anabolic therapy. Anabolic therapy remains an option for individuals experiencing new fractures or persistent high fracture risk despite antiresorptive treatment. In cases of inadequate response, the consensus recommended considering a switch to more potent medications. The consensus also addressed the management of medication-related complications, proposing alternatives instead of discontinuation of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: This consensus provides a comprehensive, cost-effective strategy for fracture prevention with an emphasis on shared decision-making and the incorporation of country-specific case management systems, such as fracture liaison services. It serves as a valuable guide for healthcare professionals in the Asia-Pacific region, contributing to the ongoing evolution of osteoporosis management.
