Abstract

Resumen La papaya (Carica papaya L.) es un cultivo de importancia económica en México y América Latina. La fase de vivero juega un papel primordial en el proceso de producción, en esta etapa es susceptible a plagas y enfermedades. El uso de biofertilizantes a base de hongos entomopatógenos (HE) es una alternativa para producir plántulas sanas y de calidad, a través de la agricultura biológica. El objetivo fue evaluar la habilidad de Beauveria brongniartii y Purpureocilium lilacinum para colonizar tejidos, promover la emergencia y mejorar la calidad de planta de dos genotipos de papaya en vivero. Se estableció un experimento con diseño factorial A×B [A = genotipo: híbrido “Intenzza” y var. “Maradol”) y B = inoculación de B. brongniartii (Bb), P. lilacinum (Pl) y sin inoculación]. Se cuantificó, el porcentaje de emergencia (PE), Altura de Planta (AP), Diámetro de Tallo (DT), Biomasa Fresca (BF) y Seca (BS), endofitismo, Índice de Lignificación (ILIG) y Calidad de Dickson (ICD). El PE incrementó (6%, P = 0,0043) con la inoculación de Bb. Ambos HE incrementaron la AP (P = 0,00001) en 0,38 (Bb) y 0,37 cm (Pl), y el DT (P = 0,00001) en 0,24 (Bb) y 0,23 mm (Pl), respectivamente. La BF aérea y radicular (P = 0,0003) incrementó con Bb y Pl en 0,16 y 0,1 g y 0,17 y 0,1 g, respectivamente. El ILIG (P = 0,0128) e ICD (P = 0,0433) fueron superiores con Bb. Tanto Bb y Pl colonizaron diferentes tejidos de la planta. La inoculación de Bb promovió la emergencia de semillas. Ambos HE lograron colonizar endofíticamente diferentes órganos de la planta y favorecieron su calidad. Abstract The papaya (Carica papaya L.) is an economically important crop in Mexico and Latin America. The nursery phase plays a primary role in the production process, at this stage, it is susceptible to pests and diseases. The use of biofertilizers based on entomopathogenic fungi (EF) is an alternative to produce healthy and quality seedlings, through biological agriculture. The objective was to evaluate the ability of Beauveria brongniartii and Purpureocilium lilacinum to colonize tissues, promote emergence and improve the plant quality of two papaya genotypes in nursery. An experiment with factorial design A×B was established [A = papaya genotype (hybrid '“Intenzza” and var. “Maradol”) and B = inoculation of B. brongniartii (Bb), P. lilacinum (Pl) and without microorganism]. Emergence percentage (EP), Plant Height (PH), Stem Diameter (SD), Fresh Biomass (FB) and Dry Biomass (DB), endophytism, Lignification Index (LIGI) and Dickson Quality (DQI) were quantified. EP increased (6%, P = 0.0043) with Bb inoculation. Both EF increased the PH (P = 0.00001) by 0.38 (Bb) and 0.37 cm (Pl), and the ST (P = 0.00001) by 0.24 (Bb) and 0.23 mm (Pl), respectively. Aerial and root FB (P = 0.0003) increased with Bb and Pl by 0.16 and 0.1 g, and 0.17 and 0.1 g, respectively. LIGI (P = 0.0128) and QDI (P = 0.0433) were higher with Bb. Both EF colonized different plant tissues. Bb inoculation promoted seed emergence, both EF were able to colonize endophytically different organs of the plant and favored its quality.

Abstract

Curvularia eragrostidis (Ascomycota: Dothideomycetes) was recently reported as the causal agent of Pineapple Leaf Spot disease (MD2 hybrid) in Central Pacific Mexico. Therefore, the effectiveness of five chemical fungicides (System Cu®, Tilt® 250 CE, Volley® 88OL, Tecto 60® and Mancozeb® 80WP) at four concentrations (1.0%, 0.5%, 0.25% and 0.125%) was evaluated through a doses response bioassay. The DGR of C. eragrostidis was 1.5 cm/day. The fungicides Volley® and Tilt® at the four evaluated concentrations did not allow the growth of C. eragrostidis. The lowest DGR for System Cu®, Mancozeb® 80WP and Tecto® 60 was found at the dose of 1% with 0.13, 0.0 and 0.39 cm / day, respectively. The %IMG for Volley® and Tilt® 250 CE were 100% at all evaluated doses. For System Cu®, Mancozeb® 80WP and Tecto® 60, the %IMG ranged from 65.2 (0.125%) - 78.2 (1.0%), 62.9 (0.125%) - 100.0 (1.0%) and 57.0 (0.125%) - 62.0% (1.0%), respectively. The Probit model suggested an LC50 of 0.025%, 0.067% and 0.076% for System Cu®, Mancozeb® 80WP and Tecto® 60, respectively. In conclusion, the fungicides Volley® and Tilt® are highly effective against C. eragrostidis; on the other hand, the EC50 for System Cu®, Mancozeb® 80WP and Tecto® 60 against C. eragrostidis are reported for the first time. Recientemente se reportó a Curvularia eragrostidis (Ascomycota: Dothideomycetes) como el agente causal de la Mancha Foliar de la Piña (híbrido MD2) en el Pacífico Centro de México. Por lo tanto, se evaluó la efectividad in vitro de cinco fungicidas químicos (System Cu®, Tilt® 250 CE, Volley® 88OL, Tecto 60® y Mancozeb® 80WP) a cuatro concentraciones (1,0%, 0,5%, 0,25% y 0,125%) sobre C. eragrostidis, a través de bioensayos dosis-respuesta. La tasa de crecimiento diaria (TCD) del hongo en el control (sin fungicida) fue de 1,5 cm/día, mientras que los fungicidas Volley® y Tilt®, en las cuatro concentraciones, no permitieron el crecimiento de C. eragrostidis. La TCD más baja para System Cu®, Mancozeb® 80WP y Tecto® 60 se encontró en la concentración al 1,0% con 0,13, 0,0 y 0,39 cm/día, respectivamente. Los porcentajes de inhibición del crecimiento micelial (%ICM) para Volley® y Tilt® 250 CE fueron del 100% en todas las concentraciones evaluadas. Para System Cu®, Mancozeb® 80WP y Tecto® 60, el %ICM osciló en un rango de 65,2% (0.125%) – 78, % (1,0%), 62,9% (0,125%) – 100,0% (1,0%) y 57,0% (0,125%) – 62,0% (1,0%), respectivamente. Un modelo Probit sugirió una concentración efectiva media (CE50) de 0,025%, 0,067% y 0,076% para System Cu®, Mancozeb® 80WP y Tecto® 60, respectivamente. En conclusión, los fungicidas Volley® y Tilt® son altamente efectivos contra C. eragrostidis; por otra parte, se reportan por primera ocasión las CE50 para System Cu®, Mancozeb® 80WP y Tecto® 60 contra C. eragrostidis.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of native Trichoderma strains for the biological control of Late Leaf Rust Disease (LLRD) in an organic Rubus idaeus plantation under screenhouse conditions. Four treatments were evaluated: T1) Trichoderma sp. strain Clombta; T2) Trichoderma sp. strain Chlorolota; T3) Co-application of both Trichoderma strains (Clombta + Chlorolota) and T4) Control, which consisted in the application of two biological products: Bacillus subtilis (Fungizard®) and Larrea tridentata botanic extract (CleanCrop®)]. Disease severity, disease severity index (DSI) and Area Under the Disease Progress Curve (AUDPC) were evaluated. The Co-application of Trichoderma sp. strain Chlorolota and Trichoderma sp. Clombta (from 43,44 to 35,73%) reduce the LLRD severity at the same level than the Control (from 44,61 to 34,33%). For DSI, Trichoderma sp. train Chlorolota (64,13) and the Co-application (61,11) showed similar values than those from the Control (59,84). Co-application of both Trichoderma strains showed the lowest AUDPC (71,2), at the same level that the Control (68,7). However, Trichoderma sp. Chlorolota (72,1) achieved the same AUDPC that the Co-application. The use of Trichoderma sp. Chlorolota or its Co-application with Trichoderma sp. strain Clombta was able to reduce the LLRD in R. idaeus. RESUMEN El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la idoneidad de cepas nativas de Trichoderma para el control biológico de la roya tardía de la hoja (RTH), en una plantación orgánica de Rubus idaeus, bajo condiciones de malla sombra. Se evaluaron cuatro tratamientos: T1) Trichoderma sp. cepa Clombta; T2) Trichoderma sp. cepa Chlorolota; T3) Co-aplicación de ambas cepas de Trichoderma (Clombta + Chlorolota) y T4) Control, el cual consistió en la aplicación de dos productos biológicos: Bacillus subtilis (Fungizard®) y extracto botánico de Larrea tridentata (CleanCrop®)]. Se evaluó la severidad de la enfermedad, el índice de severidad de la enfermedad (IS) y el área bajo la curva de progreso de la enfermedad (ABCPE). La co-aplicación de Trichoderma sp. cepas Chlorolota y Clombta (de 43,44 a 35,73%) redujo la severidad de RTH al mismo nivel que el Control (de 44,61 a 34,33%). Para el IS, Trichoderma sp. cepa Chlorolota (64,13) y la Co-aplicación (61,11) mostraron valores similares al Control (59,84). La co-aplicación de ambas cepas de Trichoderma obtuvo el menor ABCPE (71,2), al mismo nivel que el Control (68,7). Sin embargo, Trichoderma sp. Chlorolota (72,1) logró el mismo ABCPE que la Co-aplicación. El uso de Trichoderma sp. Chlorolota o su Co-aplicación con la cepa Clombta fueron capaces de reducir la RTH en R. idaeus.

Abstract

In this study, the effects of Aspergillus niger in coculture with the basidiomycetes, Trametes versicolor, T. maxima, and Ganoderma spp., were studied to assess H2O2 production and laccase (Lac), Lignin Peroxidase (LiP), and manganese peroxidase (MnP) activities. The results indicated that maximum discoloration was of 97%, in the T. maxima and A. niger coculture, where the concentration of H2O2 was 5 mg/L and 6.3 mg/L in cultures without and with dye, respectively. These concentrations of H2O2 were 1.6- and 1.8-fold higher than monocultures of T. maxima (3.37 mg/L) and A. niger (3.87 mg/L), respectively. In the same coculture, the LiP and MnP enzyme activities also increased 12-fold, (from 0.08 U/mg to 0.99 U/mg), and 67-fold, (from 0.11 U/mg to 7.4 U/mg), respectively. The Lac activity increased 1.7-fold (from 13.46 U/mg to 24 U/mg). Further, a Box–Behnken experimental design indicated a 1.8-fold increase of MnP activity (from 7.4 U/mg to 13.3 U/mg). In addition, dye discoloration regression model obtained from the Box–Behnken experimental design showed a positively correlation with H2O2, (R2 = 0.58) and a negatively correlation with Lac activity (R2 = –0.7). Abstract

Solubilization of inorganic P-sources and production of siderophores and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) by Beauveria brongniartii were quantified and then, the effects of biofertilization using B. brongniartii on the plant growth, fruit yield and quality of Capsicum chinense were evaluated. Beauveria brongniartii solubilized more P from Ca3(PO4)2 (158.95 mg L−1) than FePO4 (31.7 mg L−1) and produced siderophores (59.8% of Fe3+-Chrome azurol-S degradation) and IAA (31.2 mg L−1). Plants fertilised at 100% of the recommended dosage (120N-150P-150K) had the tallest height at 30 (37.56 cm, P = 0.0494), 45 (57.56 cm, P = 0.0510) and 60 (67.87 cm, P = 0.0461) days after transplanting (dat) compared to plants inoculated and fertilised at 75% (90N-112.5P-112.5K) during the same period (30 dat = 30.68 cm, 45 dat = 45.81 and 60 dat = 55.75 cm). Inoculated plants with B. brongniartii had a higher foliar N content (3.53%, P = 0.0532) than non-inoculated plants (3.31%). The fruit weight (FW = 6.767 g, P = 0.00001), longitudinal fruit diameter (LFD = 37.82 mm, P = 0.0001) and equatorial fruit diameter (EFD = 25.59 mm, P = 0.0003) were also higher in inoculated versus non-inoculated plants (FW = 5.632 g, LFD = 33.98 mm and EFD = 24.10 mm). The P-solubilizing ability and siderophore and IAA production of B. brongniartii played an important role in the plant growth, foliar nutrient content and fruit quality of C. chinense plants.
