The impact of tropical cyclones on the operation of bridges and railways are mostly dependent on the forecast wind speed trend (upward, downward or staying steady) at present in Hong Kong. There are requests to forecast the exceedance of wind speed thresholds for such operations with a lead time of many hours ahead. This study considers the technical feasibility of forecasting the wind speed along a recently built bridge in Hong Kong with a coupled mesoscale numerical weather prediction (NWP)–computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. This bridge features numerous anemometers where the coupled model can be verified. It is found that these two tropical cyclone cases are very challenging, especially in representing the wind structure of the cyclone because of its relatively small circulation. As such, the timing of the maximum wind could be 2 to 4 h earlier than the actual observation. The maximum wind speed from CFD modeling could be higher than that from the NWP model alone by 5 to 10 m/s, which shows that CFD modeling could add value in the forecasting of wind speed exceedance, although the maximum simulated value is still lower than the actual observation by as much as 10 m/s. As a result, while the general wind speed trend may be forecast, the exceedance of definite values of wind speed limits is still practically rather challenging, given the present two cases of tropical cyclones. In the study of aircraft wake target detection, as the wake evolves and develops, the detection area of the LiDAR often shows the presence of two distinct vortices, one on each side. Sometimes, only a single wake vortex may be present. This can lead to a reduction in the accuracy of wake detection and an increased likelihood of missed detections, which may have a significant impact on the flight safety. Hence, we propose an algorithm based on the YOLOv8n–CBAM–EfficientNetV2 model for wake detection. The algorithm incorporates the lightweight network of EfficientNetV2 and the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) based on the YOLOv8n model, which achieves the lightweight improvement in the YOLOv8n algorithm and the improvement in detection accuracy. First, this study classifies the wake vortices in the wake greyscale images obtained at Hong Kong International Airport, based on the Range–Height Indicator (RHI) scanning characteristics of the LiDAR and the symmetry of the wake vortex pairs. The classification is used to detect left and right vortices for more accurate wake detection in wind field images, which thereby improves the precision rate of target detection. Subsequently, experiments are conducted using a YOLOv8n–CBAM–EfficientNetV2 model for aircraft wake detection. Finally, the performance of the YOLOv8n–CBAM–EfficientNetV2 model is analysed. The results show that the algorithm proposed in this study can achieve a 96.35% precision rate, 93.58% recall rate, 95.06% F1-score, and 250 frames/s. An in-depth understanding of typhoon wind and turbulence characteristics in the atmospheric boundary layer is of crucial importance to structural design of high-rise structures. This study utilizes observational wind records collected from the 356-m-high Shenzhen Meteorological Gradient Tower, which is currently the tallest in Asia and the world's second tallest meteorological tower during Super Typhoon Saola to investigate typhoon wind and turbulence characteristics based on the stationary and nonstationary models. The mean wind speed and direction, power law exponent, friction velocity, and wind speed profiles are analyzed using the stationary model. Moreover, a comparative analysis employing the stationary and nonstationary models is carried out to study turbulence characteristics involving turbulence intensity, gust factor, turbulence integral length scale, power spectral density (PSD), and turbulence parameter profiles, along with a comparison to those stipulated in several building or structural design codes and standards. The results indicate that the typhoon wind speed signals exhibit strong nonstationarity, especially for longitudinal wind direction. The turbulence parameters calculated within the nonstationary framework are lower than those from the stationary model. In addition, the PSDs of the three orthogonal wind components obtained from the stationary and nonstationary model display similarities at the frequency above 0.01 Hz, and von Kármán spectra perform better in fitting the observed PSDs compared to the Kaimal spectra. The findings of this research reveal notable disparities in typhoon wind and turbulence characteristics yielded from the stationary and nonstationary models, highlighting the necessity of accounting for nonstationarity under typhoon wind conditions. The atmosphere exhibits variability across different time scales. Currently, in the field of atmospheric science, statistical filtering is one of the most widely used methods for extracting signals on certain time scales. However, signal extraction based on traditional statistical filters may be sensitive to missing data points, which are particularly common in meteorological data. To address this issue, this study applies a new type of temporal filters based on a one-dimensional convolution neural network (1D-CNN) and examines its performance on reducing such uncertainties. As an example, we investigate the advantages of a 1D-CNN bandpass filter in extracting quasi-biweekly-to-intraseasonal signals (10–60 days) from temperature data provided by the Hong Kong Observatory. The results show that the 1D-CNN achieves accuracies similar to a 121-point Lanczos filter. In addition, the 1D-CNN filter allows a maximum of 10 missing data points within the 60-point window length, while keeping its accuracy higher than 80% (R2 > 0.8). This indicates that the 1D-CNN model works well even when missing data points exist in the time series. This study highlights another potential for applying machine learning algorithms in atmospheric and climate research, which will be useful for future research involving incomplete time series and real-time filtering.
