Health awareness is important with increasingly complex challenges towards maintaining good health, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Regular health monitoring is a must for everyone during the pandemic. This project proposed anIoT based E-Healthcaresystem to monitor thebody temperature, blood pressure and heartbeat rate.The temperature sensor wasconnected to a Raspberry Pi microcontroller and the readings were stored in the SQLitedatabase management system. The blood pressure and heartbeat rate readingswereretrieved from the wrist blood pressure sensorand the readings were enteredinto the database. The user canaccess the health data record through a smartphone.

Abstract

On most of the offshore oil and gas platforms, the current means of generating power are through the use of generators i.e. gas turbines and diesel power generators, or micro-generators for some smaller equipment. These generator sets are less reliable, especially on unmanned platforms. Hence, the deployment of renewable energy, such as the use of wind turbines, would be better for energy security, economic development and also protection of the environment. Instead of using wind power to power up the whole platform, small wind turbines can be utilised to power up some utilities and instrumentations on the platform, while having generators as back up, as the wind speed is beyond control. However, the capability of a small wind turbine in generating enough power is constantly under doubt as it is yet to be widely employed and only meagre data is available. This is caused by the issue of having insufficient studies regarding the implementation of small wind turbines for power generation on offshore oil and gas platforms. Hence, this paper studied the capability of small wind turbines for power generation on offshore platforms in Malaysia. Several models of small wind turbines were selected and their abilities in generating power to fulfil the annual energy consumption on a typical offshore platform were examined through precise calculations. The common offshore locations in Malaysia were identified and the average wind speeds from 2017 to 2019 at these locations were analysed. The result shows that certain models of small wind turbines are able to provide a significant amount of power for an offshore platform especially to power up the low power machineries. It was found that Kerteh, Terengganu is the most suitable offshore location to harness wind power due to its averagely high wind speed throughout the year. The highest amount of energy that can be produced was around 1445kWh per annum at Kerteh by the small wind turbine with the largest swept area and the lowest cut-in speed. This paper aims to serve as numerical validation on the plausibility of integrating small wind turbines for the generation of electricity on offshore platforms in Malaysia while also providing the recommended locations that are suitable for this region.

Abstract

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies have started to work from home. As the pandemic recovers, companies slowly start to adapt to the situation by making the workers work from the office. This is an effort to reduce the risks of spreading diseases in the workplace during the endemic of COVID-19. An effective solution is urgently needed to reduce and control the transmission rate of COVID-19. This has motivated us to design an Internet of Things (IoT) Health and Social Distancing Monitoring System (IHDS). This system aims to support that initiative and introduce a system that can control the risks of infection among workers due to a worrying spike in the number of cases in the workplace. The proposed system monitors the health condition of the users and controls social distancing at the workplace by using IoT technology and machine learning. Extensive experiments were conducted to assess the performance of the proposed system. Four critical health metrics were closely monitored: body temperature, pulse rate, blood oxygen saturation, and cough detection, achieving impressive accuracy rates of 99.91%, 94.32%, 99%, and 80.5%, respectively. The proposed system initiates the assignment of red boxes to couples who are separated by less than 1 meter, while it designates green boxes for couples who maintain more than a 1-meter distance from each other.

Abstract

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have gained wide interest due to their high device efficiency of up to 22.1%. Perovskite solar cells are comprised of five main layers: fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass, titanium dioxide (TiO2) electron transport layer (ETL), perovskite active layer, Spiro-OMeTAD hole transport layer (HTL), and a metal contact layer. The metal contact layer plays a significant role in collecting and transporting the generated current and hence governs the performance of the device. Aluminium (Al) is more cost-efficient than the commonly used silver (Ag) or gold (Au) contact layers in perovskite solar cells. The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of different thicknesses and surface morphologies on the electrical properties of the Al thin film contact layers for perovskite solar cell applications. The Al contact layers were deposited using a thermal evaporator with varying Al wire source lengths at constant deposition duration and pressure. The deposited films were characterised for thickness, morphology, and electrical properties using a stylus profilometer, an atomic force microscope, and a four-point probe, respectively. Results showed that thicker Al films have larger particle sizes as compared to the thinner films, demonstrating a more continuous film morphology. Resistivity and conductivity show a variance with different film thickness. Based on literature, higher conductivity and larger particle sizes of the metal contact layers can improve charge transportation, which contributes to the performance of the perovskite solar cell.

Abstract

Smart windows represent a promising technology that enables the selective transmission of light and heat, and electrochromism technology is gaining interest in smart window applications. Electrochromic (EC) smart windows are the preferred choice for outdoor applications due to their ability to withstand high temperatures. Particularly, Tungsten Trioxide (WO3) is commonly used as an electrochromic layer in EC devices. Although Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) is a less expensive EC material compatible with optoelectronics applications (including solar cells), it has received little research attention. In the course of this study, the sol-gel spin coating method was utilised to deposit a thin film of TiO2 onto Indium Tin Oxide (ITO). This technique was chosen for its simplicity, affordability, and ease of coating thin films. The pre-heating temperature demonstrated a critical role in sol-gel fabrication, particularly in electrochromic applications. As the impact of the pre-heating temperature remains poorly understood, this study effectively investigated the effect of various pre-heating temperatures on the performance of TiO2-based electrochromic thin films. Moreover, this study effectively analysed the structural, optical, and EC properties of the TiO2 thin films pre-heated at different temperatures.

Abstract

Memory modules are widely used in varies kind of electronics system design. Thecapacity of the memory moduleshas increased rapidly since the past few years in order to satisfy the high demand from the end-users.The memory modules’ manufacturersdemand more units of automatic test equipment (ATE)to increase the production rate. However, the existing ATE used inthe industry to carry out thememory testing istoo costly(at least a million dollarsper ATE tester). The low-cost memory testers are urgently needed to increase the production rate of the memory module.This has inspiredus to design a low-costmemory tester.A low-cost memory fault detection tester withall the majorfault detection algorithms that used in industry ismodelled using Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL) in this paper to support the need of the low-cost ATE memory tester. The fault detection algorithms modelled are MATS+ (Modified Algorithm Test Sequence), MATS++, March C, March C-, March X,March Y,zero-one and checkerboard scan tests. PERL programisused to analyse the simulation results and a log file will be generated at the end of the memory test. Extensive simulation and experimental test results show that the memory tester modelled covers all thememory test algorithmsused in the industry.The low-cost memory fault detection tester designed providesthe 100% fault detection coverage for all memory defects.

32. Efficiency enhancement of CZTS solar cell with WO3buffer layer using CZTSe BSF layer

Abstract

Non-toxic, low-cost, and bandgap-direct material Copper Zinc Tin Sulphide (CZTS) is a promising candidate thin film solar cell. As the effort to improve the efficiency of the CZTS solar cell, this work chooses an environmentally friendly tungsten oxide (WO3) as the buffer layer due to its high bandgap and excellent electrical conductivity. Furthermore, Cu2ZnSnSe4(CZTSe) is employed as the back surface field (BSF) layer which is sandwiched between the absorber layer and the back contact layer. A new structure Pt/CZTSe/CZTS/WO3/ZnO is proposed and a comparative study is done between structures with and without BSF layer. The research investigates how the layer thickness, operating temperature, different back contact layer, acceptors, and defects in BSF layer affect the performance of CZTS solar cell using the solar cell capacitance simulator (SCAP-1D) simulation software. Efficiency of CZTS solar cell with WO3is greatly improved with efficiency as high as 29.37 % for the proposed new structure.

Abstract

Recently, researchers have shown a strong interest in research on quaternary semiconductor copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS) photovoltaic cells. These cells have a high absorption coefficient, a direct bandgap, and excellent electrical properties. However, the toxicity of cadmium (Cd) in the cadmium sulfide (CdS) buffer layer in standard CZTS solar cells, can generate severe environmental contamination that is hazardous to humans. As a result, building a Cd‐free CZTS solar cell is critical. Meanwhile, given that the peak power conversion efficiency of CZTS solar cells stands at a modest 11%, this study is dedicated to identifying an optimal approach for replacing the environmentally hazardous CdS layers to enhance overall efficiency. SCAPS‐1D is a one‐dimensional solar cell simulation program commonly used to examine proposed solar cells without building them. This study highlights the performance of CZTS with various nontoxic buffer layers, as well as the key results obtained through numerical research with SCAPS‐1D. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Waste management is an important aspect to be addressed in Smart Cities and buildings. An effective waste management system can reduce the reliance on workforce and also reduce the labor cost required for systematic waste collection. The advancement in IoT technology enables waste management to be carried out effectively and promptly when the garbage is fully occupied. This work aims to develop a smart waste management system based on the Internet of Things (IoT), implemented with sensors that can track the level of waste in the garbage bin. The developed idea here is novel, deploying a simple IoT enabled ultrasonic sensor setup to realize waste level monitoring and remotely making the data available to users so that waste collection can be carried out effectively and timely upon full occupancy.

Abstract

The increase in the population of senior citizens created a new challenge of the shortage of healthcare workers to take care of the elderly. The elderly with multiple chronic conditions face problems in managing their daily medication intake. This has inspired us to design a low-cost Smart Internet of Things (IoT) Mobile Medication Dispenser (SMMD) to take care of the daily medication intake of the elderly. SMMD consists of hardware (medication dispenser) and software (an app for the user to control the SMMD and program the time to dispense the medication). The NodeMCU is used to control the stepper motor, organic light-emitting diode (OLED), and motor driver. The OLED displays the current time and the time set by the caregiver/elderly to take the medicine. The SMMD with three wheels enables it to move and dispense medication to the elderly. The NodeMCU is connected to the Firebase database to access the time required to dispense the medicine. The total cost of SMMD is USD50 and is affordable for the elderly from the lower-income group and making the process of taking medicine not a hassle for the elderly. The price of SMMD can be much lower when it is mass-produced.

Abstract

The agricultural sector's upheaval is experiencing a momentous surge, bolstered by urbanization and the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The use of modern information and communication technologies has led to increased efficiency in smart farming, resulting in improved productivity and plant quality with minimal human intervention. This paper introduces a smart farming system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and powered by a dual-mode solar system, fitted with agriculture sensors for data collection from plants, including parameters like soil moisture, temperature, and pH levels. The data is transmitted to the IoT cloud for analysis and display on two IoT platforms, ThingSpeak and mobile Blynk application. A dual-mode solar power integrated in the system, together with an irrigation unit capable of watering the plants automatically or manually, enables seamless switching from solar to wired power in the event of inadequate solar energy. The objective of this initiative is to equip farmers with an affordable smart farming system using renewable energy. This enables them to monitor crop data in real-time and conduct comprehensive analyses to efficiently use water resources. This paper presents a resilient model of the IoT-based smart farming system.

Abstract

As a successor to the present 4G technology, 5G is a modern technology with a new interface that is being developed. The main purpose of 5G is to deliver a diversified collection of services to clients worldwide, including fast data speeds, wider coverage, low latency, cheap cost, high system capacity, and a variety of connectivity alternatives. Every major carrier intends to build both millimetre wave and sub-6 5G networks, but they choose to start with the lowest frequency bands and work their way up the frequency spectrum. The sub-6 spectrums are a better option for 5G. The recent deployments of the 5G networks are focused on the sub-6GHz spectrums. However, there are limited works reported on the 5G in sub-6GHz and this has motivated us to evaluate the performance of the 5G network in sub-6GHz spectrums. This project evaluates the performance of a 5G sub-6GHz network and the performance of the 5G is compared with the 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network. The Vienna 5G System Level Simulator is a numerical model of wireless communication networks that is used to develop and improve mobile communication standards. It allows the community to do repeatable simulations of crucial scenarios in preparation for 5G and beyond. The performance of the 5G sub-6GHz throughputs is evaluated using the Vienna 5G Simulator. Extensive simulation works that considered a variety of factors, i.e., bandwidths, the number of users, users speed, and carrier frequencies were carried out to evaluate the performance of the 5G sub-6GHz network. The numerical findings indicate that 5G sub-6GHz performance is always better than LTE performance under identical simulation circumstances, demonstrating that 5G always outperforms LTE. The average cell throughput of the 5G sub-6GHz is 8 times more than the 4G network. The average peak throughput dropped when the mobility speed of the users increased. The throughput of the 5G network is directly proportional to the frequency bandwidth allocated.

50. Design of Low-Cost Active Noise Cancellation System for Automobile

Abstract

The noise in the automobile affects the driving experience. The noise in the car is dominated by low-frequency noise which can be effectively reduced by active noise cancellation (ANC). The commercial ANC system employed in the car is often adopting digital signal processing (DSP) to achieve noise cancellation, in which the cost is relatively high, and it is pre-built in the automobile itself. In this work, a low-cost portable analog ANC system is designed to cancel the noise in the automobile. Extensive experimental tests are carried out to suppress the single-tone noise in the automobile, ranging from 100Hz to 500Hz in a frequency step of 100Hz. The proposed ANC system managed to reduce a maximum of 16.7dB of noise at 200Hz and a minimum of 1.7dB of noise at 400Hz. The results show that the analog ANC system designed can significantly reduce the low-frequency noise in the automobile.
