In magnetically ordered insulators, elementary quasiparticles manifest as spin waves - collective motions of localized magnetic moments propagating through the lattice - observed via inelastic neutron scattering. In effective spin-1/2 systems where geometric frustrations suppress static magnetic order, spin excitation continua can emerge, either from degenerate classical spin ground states or from entangled quantum spins characterized by emergent gauge fields and deconfined fractionalized excitations. Comparing the spin Hamiltonian with theoretical models can unveil the microscopic origins of these zero-field spin excitation continua. Here, we use neutron scattering to study spin excitations of the two-dimensional (2D) triangular-lattice effective spin-1/2 antiferromagnet CeMgAl11O19. Analyzing the spin waves in the field-polarized ferromagnetic state, we find that the spin Hamiltonian is close to an exactly solvable 2D triangular-lattice XXZ model, where degenerate 120$^\circ$ ordered ground states - umbrella states - develop in the zero temperature limit. We then find that the observed zero-field spin excitation continuum matches the calculated ensemble of spin waves from the umbrella state manifold, and thus conclude that CeMgAl11O19 is the first example of an exactly solvable spin liquid on a triangular lattice where the spin excitation continuum arises from the ground state degeneracy., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

The saddle point (van Hove singularity) exhibits a divergent density of states in 2D systems, leading to fascinating phenomena like strong correlations and unconventional superconductivity, yet it is seldom observed in 3D systems. In this work, we have found two types of 3D higher-order saddle points (HOSPs) in emerging 3D kagome metals, YbCo$_6$Ge$_6$ and MgCo$_6$Ge$_6$. Both HOSPs exhibit a singularity in their density of states, which is significantly enhanced compared to the ordinary saddle point. The HOSP near the Fermi energy generates a flat band extending a large area in the Brillouin zone, potentially amplifying the correlation effect and fostering electronic instabilities. Two types of HOSPs exhibit distinct robustness upon element substitution and lattice distortions in these kagome compounds. In solid materials, nontrivial topological states, electron correlations, and magnetism are central ingredients for realizing quantum properties, including unconventional superconductivity, charge and spin density waves, and quantum spin liquids. The Kagome lattice, made up of connected triangles and hexagons, can host these three ingredients simultaneously and has proven to be a fertile platform for studying diverse quantum phenomena including those stemming from the interplay of these ingredients. In this review, we introduce the fundamental properties of the Kagome lattice as well as discuss the complex observed phenomena seen in several emergent material systems such as the intertwining of charge order and superconductivity in some Kagome metals, modulation of magnetism and topology in some Kagome magnets, and symmetry breaking with Mott physics in the breathing Kagome insulators. We also highlight many open questions in the field as well as future research directions of Kagome systems.

Interlayer excitons, or bound electron-hole pairs whose constituent quasiparticles are located in distinct stacked semiconducting layers, are being intensively studied in heterobilayers of two dimensional semiconductors. They owe their existence to an intrinsic type-II band alignment between both layers that convert these into p-n junctions. Here, we unveil a pronounced interlayer exciton (IX) in heterobilayers of metal monochalcogenides, namely gamma-InSe on epsilon-GaSe, whose pronounced emission is adjustable just by varying their thicknesses given their number of layers dependent direct bandgaps. Time-dependent photoluminescense spectroscopy unveils considerably longer interlayer exciton lifetimes with respect to intralayer ones, thus confirming their nature. The linear Stark effect yields a bound electron-hole pair whose separation d is just (3.6 \pm 0.1) {\AA} with d being very close to dSe = 3.4 {\AA} which is the calculated interfacial Se separation. The envelope of IX is twist angle dependent and describable by superimposed emissions that are nearly equally spaced in energy, as if quantized due to localization induced by the small moir\'e periodicity. The Kagome lattice is an important fundamental structure in condensed matter physics for investigating the interplay of electron correlation, topology, and frustrated magnetism. Recent work on Kagome metals in the AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) family, has shown a multitude of correlation-driven distortions, including symmetry breaking charge density waves and nematic superconductivity at low temperatures. Here we study the new Kagome metal Yb0.5Co3Ge3 and find a temperature-dependent kink in the resistivity that is highly similar to the AV3Sb5 behavior and is commensurate with an in-plane structural distortion of the Co Kagome lattice along with a doubling of the c-axis. The space group is found to lower from P6/mmm to P63/m below the transition temperature, breaking the in-plane mirror planes and C6 rotation, while gaining a screw axis along the c-direction. At very low temperatures, anisotropic negative magnetoresistance is observed, which may be related to anisotropic magnetism. This raises questions about the types of the distortions in Kagome nets and their resulting physical properties including superconductivity and magnetism.

Topological semimetals with symmetry-protected band crossings have emerged as a rich landscape to explore intriguing electronic phenomena. Nonsymmorphic symmetries in particular have been shown to play an important role in protecting the crossings along a line (rather than a point) in momentum space. Here we report experimental and theoretical evidence for Dirac nodal line crossings along the Brillouin zone boundaries in PtPb$_4$, arising from the nonsymmorphic symmetry of its crystal structure. Interestingly, while the nodal lines would remain gapless in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the SOC in this case plays a detrimental role to topology by lifting the band degeneracy everywhere except at a set of isolated points. Nevertheless, the nodal line is observed to have a bandwidth much smaller than that found in density functional theory (DFT). We report a layered ternary selenide BaPt4Se6 featuring sesqui-selenide Pt2Se3 layers sandwiched by Ba atoms. The Pt2Se3 layers in this compound can be derived from the Dirac-semimetal PtSe2 phase with Se vacancies that form a honeycomb structure. This structure results in a Pt (VI) and Pt (II) mixed-valence compound with both PtSe6 octahedra and PtSe4 square net coordination configurations. Temperature dependent electrical transport measurements suggest two distinct anomalies: a resistivity crossover, mimic to the metal-insulator (M-I) transition at ~150K, and a resistivity plateau at temperatures below 10K. The resistivity crossover is not associated with any structural, magnetic or charge order modulated phase transitions. Magnetoresistivity, Hall and heat capacity measurements concurrently suggest an existing hidden state below 5K in this system. The anomalous Hall, Nernst and thermal Hall coefficients of Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$ display several features upon cooling, like a reversal in the Nernst signal below $T = 50$ K pointing to a topological transition (TT) associated to the development of magnetic spin textures. Since the anomalous transport variables are related to the Berry curvature, a possible TT might imply deviations from the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law. However, the anomalous Hall and thermal Hall coefficients of Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$ are found, within our experimental accuracy, to satisfy the WF law for magnetic-fields $\mu_0H$ applied along its inter-layer direction. Surprisingly, large anomalous transport coefficients are also observed for $\mu_0H$ applied along the planar \emph{a}-axis as well as along the gradient of the chemical potential, a configuration that should not lead to their observation due to the absence of Lorentz force. However, as $\mu_0H$ $\|$ \emph{a}-axis is increased, magnetization and neutron scattering indicate just the progressive canting of the magnetic moments towards the planes followed by their saturation. These anomalous planar quantities are found to not scale with the component of the planar magnetization ($M_{\|}$), showing instead a sharp decrease beyond $\sim \mu_0 H_{\|} = $ 4 T which is the field required to align the magnetic moments along $\mu_0 H_{\|}$. We argue that locally chiral spin structures, such as skyrmions, and possibly skyrmion tubes, lead to a field dependent spin-chirality and hence to a novel type of topological anomalous transport. Whereas electron-phonon scattering typically relaxes the electron's momentum in metals, a perpetual exchange of momentum between phonons and electrons conserves total momentum and can lead to a coupled electron-phonon liquid with unique transport properties. This theoretical idea was proposed decades ago and has been revisited recently, but the experimental signatures of an electron-phonon liquid have been rarely reported. We present evidence of such a behavior in a transition metal ditetrelide, NbGe$_2$, from three different experiments. First, quantum oscillations reveal an enhanced quasiparticle mass, which is unexpected in NbGe$_2$ due to weak electron-electron correlations, hence pointing at electron-phonon interactions. Second, resistivity measurements exhibit a discrepancy between the experimental data and calculated curves within a standard Fermi liquid theory. Third, Raman scattering shows anomalous temperature dependence of the phonon linewidths which fits an empirical model based on phonon-electron coupling. We discuss structural factors, such as chiral symmetry, short metallic bonds, and a low-symmetry coordination environment as potential sources of coupled electron-phonon liquids., Comment: Preprint, 18 pages, 4 figures

Van der Waals (VdW) materials have opened new directions in the study of low dimensional magnetism. A largely unexplored arena is the intrinsic tuning of VdW magnets toward new ground-states. The chromium trihalides provided the first such example with a change of inter-layer magnetic coupling emerging upon exfoliation. Here, we take a different approach to engineer new ground-states, not by exfoliation, but by tuning the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of the non-magnetic ligand atoms (Cl,Br,I). We synthesize a three-halide series, CrCl$_{3-x-y}$Br$_{x}$I$_{y}$, and map their magnetic properties as a function of Cl, Br, and I content. The resulting triangular phase diagrams unveil a frustrated regime near CrCl$_{3}$. First-principles calculations confirm that the frustration is driven by a competition between the chromium and halide SOCs. Furthermore, we reveal a field-induced change of inter-layer coupling in the bulk of CrCl$_{3-x-y}$Br$_{x}$I$_{y}$ crystals at the same field as in the exfoliation experiments., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

Owing to their chiral cubic structure, exotic multifold topological excitations have been predicted and recently observed in transition metal silicides like $\beta$-RhSi. Herein, we report that the topological character of RhSi is also observed in its orthorhombic $\alpha$-phase which displays multiple types of Dirac nodes very close to the Fermi level ($\varepsilon_F$) with the near absence of topologically trivial carriers. We discuss the symmetry analysis, band connectivity along high-symmetry lines using group representations, the band structure, and the nature of the Dirac points and nodal lines occurring near $\varepsilon_F$. The de Haas-van Alphen effect (dHvA) indicates a Fermi surface in agreement with the calculations. We find an elliptically-shaped nodal line very close to $\varepsilon_F$ around and near the $S$-point on the $k_y-k_z$ plane that results from the intersection of two upside-down Dirac cones. The two Dirac points of the participating Kramers degenerate bands are only 5 meV apart, hence an accessible magnetic field might induce a crossing between the spin-up partner of the upper-Dirac cone and the spin-down partner of the lower Dirac cone, possibly explaining the anomalies observed in the magnetic torque.

We report the discovery of Ce$_3$Ir$_4$Ge$_{13}$, a new Remeika phase compound with a complex array of structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. Our single crystal x-ray diffraction measurements show that Ce$_3$Ir$_4$Ge$_{13}$ forms in the tetragonally distorted $I4_1/amd$ space group. The electrical resistivity is almost temperature independent over three decades in temperature, from 0.4 K to 400 K, while the Hall coefficient measurements are consistent with a low-carrier semimetal. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal an effective moment of $\mu^{\text{exp}}_{\text{eff}} = 1.87 \mu_B$/Ce, suggesting that this material has a mixture of magnetic Ce$^{3+}$ and non-magnetic Ce$^{4+}$. Upon cooling, Ce$_3$Ir$_4$Ge$_{13}$ first enters a short range magnetically ordered state below $T_{\text{SRO}}=10$ K, marked by a deviation from Curie-Weiss behavior in susceptibility and a broad field-independent heat capacity anomaly. At lower temperatures, we observe a second, sharper peak in the heat capacity at $T^* = 1.7$ K, concurrent with a splitting of the field-cooled and zero-field-cooled susceptibilities. A small resistivity drop at $T^*$ suggests a loss of spin disorder scattering consistent with a magnetic ordering or spin freezing transition. Ce$_3$Ir$_4$Ge$_{13}$ is therefore a rare example of an inhomogeneous mixed valence compound with a complex array of thermodynamic and transport properties., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We report the existence of a phase transition at high temperature in the 3D Kitaev candidate material, $\beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$. We show that the transition is bulk, intrinsic and orders a tiny magnetic moment with a spatially anisotropic saturation moment. We show that even though this transition is global, it does not freeze the local Ir moments, which order at much lower temperatures into an incommensurate state. Rather, the ordered moment has an orbital origin that is coupled to spin correlations, likely of a Kitaev origin. The separate ordering of spin-correlated orbital moments and of local Ir moments reveals a novel way in which magnetic frustration in Kitaev systems can lead to coexisting magnetic states., Comment: 7 pages, 5 Figures

We report a study on the magnetotransport properties and on the Fermi surfaces (FS) of the ZrSi(Se,Te) semimetals. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, in absence of spin orbit coupling (SOC), reveal that both the Se and the Te compounds display Dirac nodal lines (DNL) close to the Fermi level $\varepsilon_F$ at symmorphic and non-symmorphic positions, respectively. We find that the geometry of their FSs agrees well with DFT predictions. ZrSiSe displays low residual resistivities, pronounced magnetoresistivity, high carrier mobilities, and a butterfly-like angle-dependent magnetoresistivity (AMR), although its DNL is not protected against gap opening. As in Cd$_3$As$_2$, its transport lifetime is found to be 10$^2$ to 10$^3$ times larger than its quantum one. ZrSiTe, which possesses a protected DNL, displays conventional transport properties. Our evaluation indicates that both compounds most likely are topologically trivial. Nearly angle-independent effective masses with strong angle dependent quantum lifetimes lead to the butterfly AMR in ZrSiSe.

Recently, a new group of layered transition-metal tetra-chalcogenides were proposed, via first principles calculations, to correspond to a new family of Weyl type-II semimetals with promising topological properties in the bulk as well as in the monolayer limit. In this article, we present measurements of the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) and de Haas-van Alphen effects under high magnetic fields for the type-II Weyl semimetallic candidate NbIrTe$_{4}$. We find that the angular dependence of the observed Fermi surface extremal cross-sectional areas agree well with our DFT calculations supporting the existence of Weyl type-II points in this material. Although we observe a large and non-saturating magnetoresistivity in NbIrTe$_{4}$ under fields all the way up to 35 T, Hall-effect measurements indicate that NbIrTe$_{4}$ is not a compensated semimetal. The transverse magnetoresistivity displays a four-fold angular dependence akin to the so-called butterfly magnetoresistivity observed in nodal line semimetals. However, we conclude that its field and this unconventional angular-dependence are governed by the topography of the Fermi-surface and the resulting anisotropy in effective masses and in carrier mobilities., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Ferromagnetic Kondo lattice compounds are far less common than their antiferromagnetic analogs. In this work, we report the discovery of a new ferromagnetic Kondo lattice compound, YbIr3Ge7. Like almost all ferromagnetic Kondo lattice systems, YbIr3Ge7 shows magnetic order with moments aligned orthogonal to the crystal electric field (CEF) easy axis. YbIr3Ge7 is unique in that it is the only member of this class of compounds that crystallizes in a rhombohedral structure with a trigonal point symmetry of the magnetic site, and it lacks broken inversion symmetry at the local moment site. AC magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and specific heat measurements show that YbIr3Ge7 has a Kondo temperature TK = 14 K and a Curie temperature TC = 2.4 K. Ferromagnetic order occurs along the crystallographic [100] hard CEF axis despite the large CEF anisotropy of the ground state Kramers doublet with a saturation moment along [001] almost four times larger than the one along [100]. This implies that a mechanism which considers the anisotropy in the exchange interaction to explain the hard axis ordering is unlikely. On the other hand, the broad second-order phase transition at TC favors a fluctuation-induced mechanism.

The noncentrosymmetric superconductor (NCS) AuBe is investigated using a variety of thermodynamic and resistive probes in magnetic fields of up to 65~T and temperatures down to 0.3~K. Despite the polycrystalline nature of the samples, the observation of a complex series of de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations has allowed the calculated bandstructure for AuBe to be validated. This permits a variety of BCS parameters describing the superconductivity to be estimated, despite the complexity of the measured Fermi surface. In addition, AuBe displays a nonstandard field dependence of the phase of dHvA oscillations associated with a band thought to host unconventional fermions in this chiral lattice. This result demonstrates the power of the dHvA effect to establish the properties of a single band despite the presence of other electronic bands with a larger density of states, even in polycrystalline samples. In common with several other NCSs, we find that the resistive upper critical field exceeds that measured by heat capacity and magnetization by a considerable factor. We suggest that our data exclude mechanisms for such an effect associated with disorder, implying that topologically protected superconducting surface states may be involved.

Kondo-based semimetals and semiconductors are of extensive current interest as a viable platform for strongly correlated states. It is thus important to understand the routes towards such dilute-carrier correlated states. One established pathway is through Kondo effect in metallic non-magnetic analogues. Here we advance a new mechanism, through which Kondo-based semimetals develop out of conduction electrons with a low carrier-density in the presence of an even number of rare-earth sites. We demonstrate this effect by studying the Kondo material Yb3Ir4Ge13 along with its closed-f-shell counterpart, Lu3Ir4Ge13. Through magnetotransport, optical conductivity and thermodynamic measurements, we establish that the correlated semimetallic state of Yb3Ir4Ge13 below its Kondo temperature originates from the Kondo effect of a low carrier conduction-electron background. In addition, it displays fragile magnetism at very low temperatures, which, in turn, can be tuned to a non Fermi liquid regime through Lu-for-Yb substitution. These findings are connected with recent theoretical studies in simplified models. Our results open an entirely new venue to explore the strong correlation physics in a semimetallic environment.

CeIr$_3$Ge$_7$ is an antiferromagnetic metal with a remarkably low ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 0.63 K, while most Ce-based magnets order between 2 and 15 K. Thermodynamic and transport properties as a function of magnetic field or pressure do not show signatures of Kondo correlations, interaction competition, or frustration, as had been observed in a few antiferromagnets with comparably low or lower $T_{\rm N}$. The averaged Weiss temperature measured below 10 K is comparable to $T_{\rm N}$ suggesting that the RKKY exchange coupling is very weak in this material. The unusually low $T_{\rm N}$ in CeIr$_3$Ge$_7$ can therefore be attributed to the large Ce-Ce bond length of about 5.7 {\AA}, which is about 1.5 {\AA} larger than in the most Ce-based intermetallic systems., Comment: 4 figures

We report complex metamagnetic transitions in single crystals of the new low carrier Kondo antiferromagnet YbRh3Si7. Electrical transport, magnetization, and specific heat measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order at T_N = 7.5 K. Neutron diffraction measurements show that the magnetic ground state of YbRh3Si7 is a collinear antiferromagnet where the moments are aligned in the ab plane. With such an ordered state, no metamagnetic transitions are expected when a magnetic field is applied along the c axis. It is therefore surprising that high field magnetization, torque, and resistivity measurements with H||c reveal two metamagnetic transitions at mu_0H_1 = 6.7 T and mu_0H_2 = 21 T. When the field is tilted away from the c axis, towards the ab plane, both metamagnetic transitions are shifted to higher fields. The first metamagnetic transition leads to an abrupt increase in the electrical resistivity, while the second transition is accompanied by a dramatic reduction in the electrical resistivity. Thus, the magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom in YbRh3Si7 are strongly coupled. We present the crystal structure, electronic structure, and transport properties of the material YbMnSb$_2$, a candidate system for the investigation of Dirac physics in the presence of magnetic order. Our measurements reveal that this system is a low-carrier-density semimetal with a 2D Fermi surface arising from a Dirac dispersion, consistent with the predictions of density functional theory calculations of the antiferromagnetic system. The low temperature resistivity is very large, suggesting scattering in this system is highly efficient at dissipating momentum despite its Dirac-like nature., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Ferromagnetic (FM) and incommensurate spin-density wave (ISDW) states are an unusual set of competing magnetic orders that are seldom observed in the same material without application of a polarizing magnetic field. We report, for the first time, the discovery of an ISDW state that is derived from a FM ground state through a Fermi surface (FS) instability in Fe$_3$Ga$_4$. This was achieved by combining neutron scattering experiments with first principles simulations. Neutron diffraction demonstrates that Fe$_3$Ga$_4$ is in an ISDW state at intermediate temperatures and that there is a conspicuous re-emergence of ferromagnetism above 360 K. First principles calculations show that the ISDW ordering wavevector is in excellent agreement with a prominent nesting condition in the spin-majority FS demonstrating the discovery of a novel instability for FM metals; ISDW formation due to Fermi surface nesting in a spin-polarized Fermi surface., Comment: 6 pages with 4 figures. Honeycomb iridates are thought to have strongly spin-anisotropic exchange interactions that could lead to an extraordinary state of matter known as the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. The realization of this state requires almost perfectly frustrated interactions between the magnetic Ir$^{4+}$ ions, but small imbalances in energy make other ordered states more favorable. Indeed, the closeness in energy of these ordered states is itself a signature of the intrinsic frustration in the system. In this work, we illustrate that small magnetic fields can be employed to drive the frustrated quantum magnet $\beta-$Li$_2$IrO$_3$,between different broken symmetry states, but without causing a true thermodynamic phase transition. This field-induced broken symmetry phase has all the signatures of a thermodynamic order parameter, but it is never truly formed in zero field. The isostructural alloying of two compounds with extremely different magnetic and thermo-structural properties has resulted in a new system, (MnNiSi)1-x(FeCoGe)x, that exhibits extraordinary magnetocaloric properties with an acute sensitivity to applied hydrostatic pressure (P). Application of hydrostatic pressure shifts the first-order phase transition to lower temperature ($\Delta$ T=-41 K with P=3.43 kbar) but preserves the giant value of isothermal entropy change (-$\Delta$S$\max$=143.7 J/kg K for a field change of {\Delta}B=5 T at atmospheric pressure).
