An $s$-pair state in a graph is a quantum state of the form $\mathbf{e}_u+s\mathbf{e}_v$, where $u$ and $v$ are vertices in the graph and $s$ is a non-zero complex number. If $s=-1$ (resp., $s=1$), then such a state is called a pair state (resp. plus state). In this paper, we develop the theory of perfect $s$-pair state transfer in continuous quantum walks, where the Hamiltonian is taken to be the adjacency, Laplacian or signless Laplacian matrix of the graph. We characterize perfect $s$-pair state transfer in complete graphs, cycles and antipodal distance-regular graphs admitting vertex perfect state transfer. We construct infinite families of graphs with perfect $s$-pair state transfer using quotient graphs and graphs that admit fractional revival. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions such that perfect state transfer between vertices in the line graph relative to the adjacency matrix is equivalent to perfect state transfer between the plus states formed by corresponding edges in the graph relative to the signless Laplacian matrix. Finally, we characterize perfect state transfer between vertices in the line graphs of Cartesian products relative to the adjacency matrix.

We study Nordhaus-Gaddum problems for Kemeny's constant $\mathcal{K}(G)$ of a connected graph $G$. We prove bounds on $\min\{\mathcal{K}(G),\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})\}$ and the product $\mathcal{K}(G)\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})$ for various families of graphs. In particular, we show that if the maximum degree of a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is $n-O(1)$ or $n-\Omega(n)$, then $\min\{\mathcal{K}(G),\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})\}$ is at most $O(n)$.

In a continuous-time quantum walk on a network of qubits, pretty good state transfer is the phenomenon of state transfer between two vertices with fidelity arbitrarily close to 1. We construct families of graphs to demonstrate that there is no bound on the size of a set of vertices that admit pretty good state transfer between any two vertices of the set.

Given a graph with Hermitian adjacency matrix $H$, perfect state transfer occurs from vertex $a$ to vertex $b$ if the $(b,a)$-entry of the unitary matrix $\exp(-iHt)$ has unit magnitude for some time $t$. This phenomenon is relevant for information transmission in quantum spin networks and is known to be monogamous under real symmetric matrices. We prove the following results: 1. For oriented graphs (whose nonzero weights are $\pm i$), the oriented $3$-cycle and the oriented edge are the only graphs where perfect state transfer occurs between every pair of vertices. This settles a conjecture of Cameron et al. On the other hand, we construct an infinite family of oriented graphs with perfect state transfer between any pair of vertices on a subset of size four. 2. There are infinite families of Hermitian graphs with one-way perfect state transfer, where perfect state transfer occurs without periodicity. In contrast, perfect state transfer implies periodicity whenever the adjacency matrix has algebraic entries (as shown by Godsil). 3. There are infinite families with non-monogamous pretty good state transfer in rooted graph products. In particular, we generalize known results on double stars (due to Fan and Godsil) and on paths with loops (due to Kempton, Lippner and Yau). The latter extends the experimental observation of quantum transport (made by Zimbor\'{a}s et al.) and shows non-monogamous pretty good state transfer can occur amongst distant vertices.

We show that any two Hadamard graphs on the same number of vertices are quantum isomorphic. This follows from a more general recipe for showing quantum isomorphism of graphs arising from certain association schemes. The main result is built from three tools. A remarkable recent result of Man\v{c}inska and Roberson shows that graphs $G$ and $H$ are quantum isomorphic if and only if, for any planar graph $F$, the number of graph homomorphisms from $F$ to $G$ is equal to the number of graph homomorphisms from $F$ to $H$. A generalization of partition functions called "scaffolds" affords some basic reduction rules such as series-parallel reduction and can be applied to counting homomorphisms. The final tool is the classical theorem of Epifanov showing that any plane graph can be reduced to a single vertex and no edges by extended series-parallel reductions and Delta-Wye transformations. This last sort of transformation is available to us in the case of exactly triply regular association schemes. The paper includes open problems and directions for future research., Comment: 21 pages

Spatial search occurs in a connected graph if a continuous-time quantum walk on the adjacency matrix of the graph, suitably scaled, plus a rank-one perturbation induced by any vertex will unitarily map the principal eigenvector of the graph to the characteristic vector of the vertex. This phenomenon is a natural continuous-time analogue of Grover search. The spatial search is said to be optimal if it occurs with constant fidelity and in time inversely proportional to the shadow of the target vertex on the principal eigenvector. Extending a result of Chakraborty et al. (Physical Review A, 102:032214, 2020), we prove a simpler characterization of optimal spatial search. Based on this characterization, we observe that some families of distance-regular graphs, such as Hamming and Grassmann graphs, have optimal spatial search. We also show a matching lower bound on time for spatial search with constant fidelity, which extends a bound due to Farhi and Gutmann for perfect fidelity. We establish the theory for pretty good state transfer in discrete-time quantum walks. For a class of walks, we show that pretty good state transfer is characterized by the spectrum of certain Hermitian adjacency matrix of the graph; more specifically, the vertices involved in pretty good state transfer must be $m$-strongly cospectral relative to this matrix, and the arccosines of its eigenvalues must satisfy some number theoretic conditions. Using normalized adjacency matrices, cyclic covers, and the theory on linear relations between geodetic angles, we construct several infinite families of walks that exhibits this phenomenon.

We develop the theory of fractional revival in the quantum walk on a graph using its Laplacian matrix as the Hamiltonian. We first give a spectral characterization of Laplacian fractional revival, which leads to a polynomial time algorithm to check this phenomenon and find the earliest time when it occurs. We then apply the characterization theorem to special families of graphs. In particular, we show that no tree admits Laplacian fractional revival except for the paths on two and three vertices, and the only graphs on a prime number of vertices that admit Laplacian fractional revival are double cones. Finally, we construct, through Cartesian products and joins, several infinite families of graphs that admit Laplacian fractional revival; some of these graphs exhibit polygamous fractional revival.

We initiate the study of approximate quantum fractional revival in graphs, a generalization of pretty good quantum state transfer in graphs. We give a complete characterization of approximate fractional revival in a graph in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the adjacency matrix of a graph. This characterization follows from a lemma due to Kronecker on Diophantine approximation, and is similar to the spectral characterization of pretty good state transfer in graphs. We develop a general spectral framework to analyze quantum fractional revival in quantum spin networks. In particular, we introduce generalizations of the notions of cospectral and strongly cospectral vertices to arbitrary subsets of vertices, and give various examples. In light of recent interest in Hadamard diagonalisable graphs (graphs whose Laplacian matrix is diagonalisable by a Hadamard matrix), we generalise this notion from real to complex Hadamard matrices. We give some basic properties and methods of constructing such graphs. We show that a large class of complex Hadamard diagonalisable graphs have vertex sets forming an equitable partition, and that the Laplacian eigenvalues must be even integers. We provide a number of examples and constructions of complex Hadamard diagonalisable graphs, including two special classes of graphs: the Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_r^d$, and the non--complete extended $p$--sum (NEPS). Fractional revival occurs between two vertices in a graph if a continuous-time quantum walk unitarily maps the characteristic vector of one vertex to a superposition of the characteristic vectors of the two vertices. This phenomenon is relevant in quantum information in particular for entanglement generation in spin networks. We study fractional revival in graphs whose adjacency matrices belong to the Bose-Mesner algebra of association schemes. A specific focus is a characterization of balanced fractional revival (which corresponds to maximal entanglement) in graphs that belong to the Hamming scheme. Fractional revival is a quantum transport phenomenon important for entanglement generation in spin networks. This takes place whenever a continuous-time quantum walk maps the characteristic vector of a vertex to a superposition of the characteristic vectors of a subset of vertices containing the initial vertex. We study state transfer in quantum walk on graphs relative to the adjacency matrix. Our motivation is to understand how the addition of pendant subgraphs affect state transfer. For two graphs $G$ and $H$, the Frucht-Harary corona product $G \circ H$ is obtained by taking $|G|$ copies of the cone $K_{1} + H$ and by connecting the conical vertices according to $G$. Our work explores conditions under which the corona $G \circ H$ exhibits state transfer. We also describe new families of graphs with state transfer based on the corona product. We prove that the corona product of two graphs has no Laplacian perfect state transfer whenever the first graph has at least two vertices. This complements a result of Coutinho and Liu who showed that no tree of size greater than two has Laplacian perfect state transfer. In contrast, we prove that the corona product of two graphs exhibits Laplacian pretty good state transfer, under some mild conditions. This provides the first known examples of families of graphs with Laplacian pretty good state transfer. Our result extends of the work of Fan and Godsil on double stars to the Laplacian setting. Moreover, we also show that the corona product of any cocktail party graph with a single vertex graph has Laplacian pretty good state transfer, even though odd cocktail party graphs have no perfect state transfer., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We study the continuous-time quantum walks on graphs in the adjacency algebra of the $n$-cube and its related distance regular graphs. For $k\geq 2$, we find graphs in the adjacency algebra of $(2^{k+2}-8)$-cube that admit instantaneous uniform mixing at time $\pi/2^k$ and graphs that have perfect state transfer at time $\pi/2^k$. We characterize the folded $n$-cubes, the halved $n$-cubes and the folded halved $n$-cubes whose adjacency algebra contains a complex Hadamard matrix. We obtain the same conditions for the characterization of these graphs admitting instantaneous uniform mixing., Comment: 24 pages

Over forty years ago, Goethals and Seidel showed that if the adjacency algebra of a strongly regular graph $X$ contains a Hadamard matrix then $X$ is either of Latin square type or of negative Latin square type. We extend their result to complex Hadamard matrices and find only three additional families of parameters for which the strongly regular graphs have complex Hadamard matrices in their adjacency algebras. Moreover we show that there are only three distance regular covers of the complete graph that give complex Hadamard matrices.

Let A be an association scheme on q\geq 3 vertices. We show that the Bose-Mesner algebra of the generalized Hamming scheme H(n,A), for n\geq 2, is not the Nomura algebra of a type II matrix. Motivated by Jones' braid group representations constructed from spin models, we define {\sl a Jones pair} to be a pair of $\nbyn$ matrices $(A,B)$ such that the endomorphisms $X_A$ and $\D_B$ form a representation of a braid group. When $A$ and $B$ are type-II matrices, we call $(A,B)$ {\sl an invertible Jones pair}. We develop the theory of Jones pairs in this thesis. Our aim is to study the connections among association schemes, spin models and four-weight spin models using the viewpoint of Jones pairs. We use Nomura's method to construct a pair of algebras from the matrices $(A,B)$, which we call the Nomura algebras of $(A,B)$. These algebras become the central tool in this thesis. We explore their properties in Chapters \ref{Nomura} and \ref{IINom}. In Chapter \ref{JP}, we introduce Jones pairs. We prove the equivalence of four-weight spin models and invertible Jones pairs. We extend some existing concepts for four-weight spin models to Jones pairs. In Chapter \ref{SpinModels}, we provide new proofs for some well-known results on the Bose-Mesner algebras associated with spin models. We document the main results of the thesis in Chapter \ref{InvJP}. We prove that every four-weight spin model comes from a symmetric spin model (up to odd-gauge equivalence). We present four Bose-Mesner algebras associated to each four-weight spin model. We study the relations among these algebras. In particular, we provide a strategy to search for four-weight spin models. Type-II matrices are a class of matrices used by Jones in his work on spin models. In this paper we show that type-II matrices arise naturally in connection with some interesting combinatorial and geometric structures.

In 1989, Vaughan Jones introduced spin models and showed that they could be used to form link invariants in two different ways--by constructing representations of the braid group, or by constructing partition functions. These spin models were subsequently generalized to so-called 4-weight spin models by Bannai and Bannai; these could be used to construct partition functions, but did not lead to braid group representations in any obvious way. Jaeger showed that spin models were intimately related to certain association schemes. Yamada gave a construction of a symmetric spin model on $4n$ vertices from each 4-weight spin model on $n$ vertices. In this paper we build on recent work with Munemasa to give a different proof to Yamada's result, and we analyse the structure of the association scheme attached to this spin model., Comment: 23 pages
