Abstract

Injection-locked semiconductor lasers were investigated using single-mode-laser rate equations. It was shown that injection-locked lasers are not fully correlated, including the stability of the master laser is not fully transferred to the two secondary lasers. The frequency stability of the master laser was shown preserved on the side bands.

12. Comparison assessment of low rank sparse-PCA based-clustering/ classification for automatic mineral identification in long wave infrared hyperspectral imagery

Abstract

The developments in hyperspectral technology in different applications are known in many fields particularly in remote sensing, airborne imagery, mineral identification and core logging. The automatic mineral identification system provides considerable assistance in geology to identify mineral automatically. Here, the proposed approach addresses an automated system for mineral (i.e. pyrope, olivine, quartz) identification in the long-wave infrared (7.7–11.8 μm - LWIR) ground-based spectroscopy. A low-rank Sparse Principal Component Analysis (Sparse-PCA) based spectral comparison methods such as Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM), Spectral Information Divergence (SID), Normalized Cross Correlation (NCC) have been used to extract the features in the form of false colors composite. Low-rank Sparse-PCA is used to extract the spectral reference which and showed high similarity to the ASTER (JPL/NASA) spectral library. For decision making step, two methods used to establish a comparison between a kernel Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) kernel K-means clustering. ELM yields classification accuracy up to 76.69% using SAM based polynomial kernel ELM for pyrope mixture, and 70.95% using SAM based sigmoid kernel ELM for olivine mixture. This accuracy is slightly lower as compared to clustering which yields an identification accuracy of 84.91% (NCC) and 69.9% (SAM). However, the supervised classification significantly depends on the number of training samples and is considerably more difficult as compared to clustering due to labeling and training limitations. Moreover, the results indicate considerable similarity between the spectra from low rank approximation from the spectra of pure sample and the spectra from the ASTER spectral library.

25. A Constellation of Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) CubeSats for Global Measurements of Three-Dimensional Winds

Abstract

Global measurements of vertically-resolved atmospheric wind profiles offer the potential for improved weather forecasts, including superior predictions of atmospheric wind patterns. A small-satellite constellation utilizing Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) instruments onboard 6U CubeSats can provide measurements of global tropospheric wind profiles from space at very low cost. These small satellites are called FTS CubeSats. The constellation consists of groups of three FTS CubeSats flying in formation and separated by a specified time delay. This geometry enables moisture-field measurements which can be combined to provide vertically-resolved profiles of the wind field on a global basis. This paper will focus on recent advances in the maturity of the FTS CubeSat concept which includes an update of the flight concept, test results from a prototype of the FTS CubeSat, and development of more effective wind extraction algorithms.

Abstract

Emerging applications in Defense and Security require sensors with state-of-the-art sensitivity and capabilities. Among these sensors, the imaging spectrometer is an instrument yielding a large amount of rich information about the measured scene. This powerful spectrometric tool is becoming more common in civil applications such as search and rescue, geological surveys, pollution monitoring, forest fire detection and monitoring and combustion studies. These sensors are now also emerging as indispensable assets for defence operations through the role they can play for troop protection against chemical attacks, detection of mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) and for the detection of camouflaged targets. Abstract

The midwave and shortwave infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum contain rich information enabling the characterization of hot, rapid events such as explosions, engine plumes, flares and other combustion events. High-speed sensors are required to analyze the content of such rapidly evolving targets. Cameras with high frame rates and non-imaging spectrometers with high data rates are typically used; however the information from these two types of instruments must be later fused to enable characterization of the transient targets. Imaging spectrometers have recently become commercially available for general scientific use, thus enabling simultaneous capture of both spatial and spectral information without co-registration issues. However, their use against rapidly-varying sources has traditionally been considered problematic, for even at moderate spatial and spectral resolutions the time to acquire a single spectrum can be long compared to the timescales associated with combustion events. This paper demonstrates that imaging Fourier-transform spectroscopy (IFTS) can successfully characterize the turbulent combustion exhaust from a turbojet engine. A Telops Hyper-Cam IFTS collected hyperspectral video from a Turbine Technologies SR-30 turbojet engine with a spectral resolution of delta = 1/cm on a 200 64 pixel sub-window at a rate of 0.3 Hz. Scene-change artifacts (SCAs) are present in the spectra; however, the stochastic fluctuations in source intensity translate into high-frequency noise. Temporal averaging affords a significant reduction of the noise associated with SCAs. Emission from CO and CO2 are clearly recognized in the averaged spectra, and information about their temperature and relative concentrations is evident., See also ADB381583.
