Physical behavior of sample acoustically levitated in high-temperature oven optically monitored by new system. Optical system allows visible and infrared monitoring of sample.

High-temperature, containerless-processing module positions and melts molten glass or metal without contact with container wall. Fluid masses manipulated, stirred, and controlled by acoustic forces. Module provides photographic monitoring and transfer of solidified specimens to storage bins.

A sun detector developed for the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn mission is described. Redundant photopotentiometers for both pitch and yaw axes, positioned below slit apertures, provide spacecraft stabilization and biased operation over plus or minus 20-deg fields of view. The biased (off-sun) operation is required for pointing the 366-cm-diameter (spacecraft-fixed) radio antenna toward earth. Configuration and fabrication processes are presented, along with a summary of development history. Particular attention is given to the properties of cadmium sulfide as these affect adaptation to this application.

A system for generating, within a single frame of photographic film, a quadrified image including images of angularly (including orthogonally) related fields of view of a near field three dimensional object is described. It is characterized by three subsystems each of which includes a plurality of reflective surfaces for imaging a different field of view of the object at a different quadrant of the quadrified image. All of the subsystems have identical path lengths to the object photographed.

Optical gimballing apparatus directs narrow fields of view throughout solid angle approaching 4 pi steradians. Image rotation produced by scanning can be eliminated or altered by gear trains directly linked to the scanning drive assembly. It provides the basis for a binocular scanning capability.

Optical approach guidance aboard Mariner Mars spacecraft
