The concept of evolutionarily stability and its relation with the fixed points of the replicator equation are important aspects of evolutionary game dynamics. In the light of the fact that oscillating state of a population and individuals (or players) of different roles are quite natural occurrences, we ask the question how the concept of evolutionarily stability can be generalized so as to associate game-theoretic meaning to oscillatory behaviours of players asymmetrically interacting, i.e., if there are both intraspecific and interspecific interactions between two subpopulations in the population. We guide our scheme of generalization such that the evolutionary stability is related to the dynamic stability of the corresponding periodic orbits of a time-discrete replicator dynamics. We name the generalization of evolutionarily stable state as two-species heterogeneity stable orbit. Furthermore, we invoke the principle of decrease of relative entropy in order to associate the generalization of evolutionary stability with an information-theoretic meaning. This particular generalization is aptly termed as two-species information stable orbit.

The paper aims at deriving a curvature form of the famous Raychaudhuri equation (RE) and the associated criteria for focusing of a hyper-surface orthogonal congruence of time-like geodesic. Moreover, the paper identifies a transformation of variable related to the metric scalar of the hyper-surface which converts the first order RE into a second order differential equation that resembles an equation of a Harmonic oscillator and also gives a first integral that yields the analytic solution of the RE and Lagrangian of the dynamical system representing the congruence.

Evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) is the defining concept of evolutionary game theory. It has a fairly unanimously accepted definition for the case of symmetric games which are played in a homogeneous population where all individuals are in same role. However, in asymmetric games, which are played in a population with multiple subpopulations (each of which has individuals in one particular role), situation is not as clear. Various generalizations of ESS defined for such cases differ in how they correspond to fixed points of replicator equation which models evolutionary dynamics of frequencies of strategies in the population. Moreover, some of the definitions may even be equivalent, and hence, redundant in the scheme of things. Along with reporting some new results, this paper is partly indented as a contextual mini-review of some of the most important definitions of ESS in asymmetric games. We present the definitions coherently and scrutinize them closely while establishing equivalences -- some of them hitherto unreported -- between them wherever possible. Since it is desirable that a definition of ESS should correspond to asymptotically stable fixed points of replicator dynamics, we bring forward the connections between various definitions and their dynamical stabilities. Furthermore, we find the use of principle of relative entropy to gain information-theoretic insights into the concept of ESS in asymmetric games, thereby establishing a three-fold connection between game theory, dynamical system theory, and information theory in this context. We discuss our conclusions also in the backdrop of asymmetric hypermatrix games where more than two individuals interact simultaneously in the course of getting payoffs., Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures

Checking for Non-Termination (NT) of a given program P, i.e., determining if P has at least one non-terminating run, is an undecidable problem that continues to garner significant research attention. While unintended NT is common in real-world software development, even the best-performing tools for NT checking are often ineffective on real-world programs and sometimes incorrect due to unrealistic assumptions such as absence of overflows. To address this, we propose a sound and efficient technique for NT checking that is also effective on realworld software. Given P, we encode the NT property as an assertion inside each loop of P to check for recurrent states in that loop, up to a fixed unwinding depth, using a Bounded Model Checker. The unwinding depth is increased iteratively until either NT is found or a predefined limit is reached. Our experiments on wide ranging software benchmarks show that the technique outperforms state-of-the-art NT checkers

While industrial-grade Yb-based amplifiers have become very prevalent, their limited gain bandwidth has created a large demand for robust spectral broadening techniques that allow for few-cycle pulse compression. In this work, we perform a comparative study between several atomic and molecular gases as media for spectral broadening in a hollow-core fiber geometry. Exploiting nonlinearities such as self-phase modulation, self-steepening, and stimulated Raman scattering, we explore the extent of spectral broadening and its dependence on gas pressure, the critical power for self-focusing, and the optimal regime for few-cycle pulse compression. Using a 3-mJ, 200-fs input laser pulses, we achieve ~ 15 fs, few-cycle pulses with >70% overall energy transmission efficiency. The optimal parameters can be scaled for higher or lower input pulse energies with appropriate gas parameters and fiber geometry., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

X-ray quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) are intense soft X-ray bursts from the nuclei of nearby low-mass galaxies typically lasting about one hour and repeating every few. Their physical origin remains debated, although so-called impacts models in which a secondary orbiting body pierces through the accretion disc around the primary supermassive black hole (SMBH) in an extreme mass-ratio inspiral (EMRI) system are considered promising. In this work, we study the QPE timing properties of GSN 069, the first galactic nucleus in which QPEs were identified, primarily focusing on Observed minus Calculated (O-C) diagrams. The O-C data in GSN 069 are consistent with a super-orbital modulation on tens of days whose properties do not comply with the impacts model. We suggest that rigid precession of a misaligned accretion disc or, alternatively, the presence of a second SMBH forming a sub-milliparsec binary with the inner EMRI is needed to reconcile the model with the data. In both cases, the quiescent accretion disc emission should also be modulated on similar timescales. Current X-ray monitoring indicates that this might be the case, although a longer baseline of higher-cadence observations is needed to confirm the tentative X-ray flux periodicity on firm statistical grounds. Future dedicated monitoring campaigns will be crucial to test the overall impacts plus modulation model in GSN 069, and to distinguish between the two proposed modulating scenarios. If our interpretation is correct, QPEs in GSN 069 represent the first electromagnetic detection of a short-period EMRI system in an external galaxy, opening the way to future multi-messenger astronomical observations. Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs) are a fundamental framework for decision-making under uncertainty and partial observability. Since in general optimal policies may require infinite memory, they are hard to implement and often render most problems undecidable. Consequently, finite-memory policies are mostly considered instead. However, the algorithms for computing them are typically very complex, and so are the resulting policies. Facing the need for their explainability, we provide a representation of such policies, both (i) in an interpretable formalism and (ii) typically of smaller size, together yielding higher explainability. To that end, we combine models of Mealy machines and decision trees; the latter describing simple, stationary parts of the policies and the former describing how to switch among them. We design a translation for policies of the finite-state-controller (FSC) form from standard literature and show how our method smoothly generalizes to other variants of finite-memory policies. Further, we identify specific properties of recently used "attractor-based" policies, which allow us to construct yet simpler and smaller representations. We report the discovery of three ultracompact binary white dwarf systems hosting accretion disks, with orbital periods of 7.95, 8.68, and 13.15 minutes. This significantly augments the population of mass-transferring binaries at the shortest periods, and provides the first evidence that accretors in ultracompacts can be dense enough to host accretion disks even below 10 minutes (where previously only direct-impact accretors were known). In the two shortest-period systems, we measured changes in the orbital periods driven by the combined effect of gravitational wave emission and mass transfer; we find $\dot{P}$ is negative in one case, and positive in the other. This is only the second system measured with a positive $\dot{P}$, and it the most compact binary known that has survived a period minimum. Using these systems as examples, we show how the measurement of $\dot{P}$ is a powerful tool in constraining the physical properties of binaries, e.g. the mass and mass-radius relation of the donor stars. We find that the chirp masses of ultracompact binaries at these periods seem to cluster around $\mathcal{M}_c \sim 0.3 M_\odot$, perhaps suggesting a common origin for these systems or a selection bias in electromagnetic discoveries. Our new systems are among the highest-amplitude known gravitational wave sources in the millihertz regime, providing exquisite opportunity for multi-messenger study with future space-based observatories such as \textit{LISA} and TianQin; we discuss how such systems provide fascinating laboratories to study the unique regime where the accretion process is mediated by gravitational waves., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the most precise results for the ground state mass of the triply-charmed spin-$3/2$ baryon using lattice quantum chromodynamics. The calculations are performed on six $N_f=2+1+1$ Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) lattice ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration. Two different lattice setups are employed: in the first one, a fully dynamical calculation with HISQ action is performed, while in the second calculation, an overlap action is utilized for the valence charm quark dynamics. Following the continuum extrapolation of our results, obtained at five different lattice spacings, two different volumes, and two different actions, our prediction for the mass of the lowest triply charmed spin-3/2 baryon, $\Omega_{ccc} (3/2^{+})$, is $4793 (5) (7)$ MeV. This is the most precise determination to date, fully addressing the systematic uncertainties. Modeling and forecasting air quality plays a crucial role in informed air pollution management and protecting public health. The air quality data of a region, collected through various pollution monitoring stations, display nonlinearity, nonstationarity, and highly dynamic nature and detain intense stochastic spatiotemporal correlation. Geometric deep learning models such as Spatiotemporal Graph Convolutional Networks (STGCN) can capture spatial dependence while forecasting temporal time series data for different sensor locations. Another key characteristic often ignored by these models is the presence of extreme observations in the air pollutant levels for severely polluted cities worldwide. Extreme value theory is a commonly used statistical method to predict the expected number of violations of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for air pollutant concentration levels. This study develops an extreme value theory-based STGCN model (E-STGCN) for air pollution data to incorporate extreme behavior across pollutant concentrations. Along with spatial and temporal components, E-STGCN uses generalized Pareto distribution to investigate the extreme behavior of different air pollutants and incorporate it inside graph convolutional networks. The proposal is then applied to analyze air pollution data (PM2.5, PM10, and NO2) of 37 monitoring stations across Delhi, India. The forecasting performance for different test horizons is evaluated compared to benchmark forecasters (both temporal and spatiotemporal). It was found that E-STGCN has consistent performance across all the seasons in Delhi, India, and the robustness of our results has also been evaluated empirically. Moreover, combined with conformal prediction, E-STGCN can also produce probabilistic prediction intervals.

Cluster or group randomized trials (CRTs) are increasingly used for both behavioral and system-level interventions, where entire clusters are randomly assigned to a study condition or intervention. Apart from the assigned cluster-level analysis, investigating whether an intervention has a differential effect for specific subgroups remains an important issue, though it is often considered an afterthought in pivotal clinical trials. Determining such subgroup effects in a CRT is a challenging task due to its inherent nested cluster structure. Motivated by a real-life HIV prevention CRT, we consider a three-level cross-sectional CRT, where randomization is carried out at the highest level and subgroups may exist at different levels of the hierarchy. We employ a linear mixed-effects model to estimate the subgroup-specific effects through their maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs). Consequently, we develop a consistent test for the significance of the differential intervention effect between two subgroups at different levels of the hierarchy, which is the key methodological contribution of this work. We also derive explicit formulae for sample size determination to detect a differential intervention effect between two subgroups, aiming to achieve a given statistical power in the case of a planned confirmatory subgroup analysis. The application of our methodology is illustrated through extensive simulation studies using synthetic data, as well as with real-world data from an HIV prevention CRT in The Bahamas.

We study the problem of robot navigation in dense and interactive crowds with environmental constraints such as corridors and furniture. Previous methods fail to consider all types of interactions among agents and obstacles, leading to unsafe and inefficient robot paths. In this article, we leverage a graph-based representation of crowded and constrained scenarios and propose a structured framework to learn robot navigation policies with deep reinforcement learning. We first split the representations of different components in the environment and propose a heterogeneous spatio-temporal (st) graph to model distinct interactions among humans, robots, and obstacles. Based on the heterogeneous st-graph, we propose HEIGHT, a novel navigation policy network architecture with different components to capture heterogeneous interactions among entities through space and time. HEIGHT utilizes attention mechanisms to prioritize important interactions and a recurrent network to track changes in the dynamic scene over time, encouraging the robot to avoid collisions adaptively. Through extensive simulation and real-world experiments, we demonstrate that HEIGHT outperforms state-of-the-art baselines in terms of success and efficiency in challenging navigation scenarios. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our pipeline achieves better zero-shot generalization capability than previous works when the densities of humans and obstacles change. The majority of atomic nuclei have deformed shapes and nearly all these shapes are symmetric with respect to reflection. There are only a few reflection asymmetric pear-shaped nuclei that have been found in actinide and lanthanide regions, which have static octupole deformation. These nuclei possess an intrinsic electric dipole moment due to the shift between the center of charge and the center of mass. This manifests in the enhancement of the electric dipole transition rates. In this article, we report on the measurement of the lifetimes of the high spin levels of the two alternate parity bands in $^{100}$Ru through the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method. The estimated electric dipole transition rates have been compared with the calculated transition rates using the triaxial projected shell model without octupole deformation, and are found to be an order of magnitude enhanced. Thus, the observation of seven inter-leaved electric dipole transitions with enhanced rates establish $^{100}$Ru as possibly the first octupole deformed nucleus reported in the A $\approx$ 100 mass region.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated strong performance as knowledge repositories, enabling models to understand user queries and generate accurate and context-aware responses. Extensive evaluation setups have corroborated the positive correlation between the retrieval capability of LLMs and the frequency of entities in their pretraining corpus. We take the investigation further by conducting a comprehensive analysis of the internal reasoning and retrieval mechanisms of LLMs. Our work focuses on three critical dimensions - the impact of entity popularity, the models' sensitivity to lexical variations in query formulation, and the progression of hidden state representations across LLM layers. Our preliminary findings reveal that popular questions facilitate early convergence of internal states toward the correct answer. However, as the popularity of a query increases, retrieved attributes across lexical variations become increasingly dissimilar and less accurate. Interestingly, we find that LLMs struggle to disentangle facts, grounded in distinct relations, from their parametric memory when dealing with highly popular subjects. Through a case study, we explore these latent strains within LLMs when processing highly popular queries, a phenomenon we term information anxiety. The emergence of information anxiety in LLMs underscores the adversarial injection in the form of linguistic variations and calls for a more holistic evaluation of frequently occurring entities.

Higher curvature f(R) gravity theories are often plagued with Ostragadsky instability. In this work we show that such instability manifests itself in the corresponding dual scalar tensor theory in the scalar sector Lagrangian. We explicitly demonstrate the correspondence between the instabilities that appear in an $f(R)$ model and its corresponding scalar tensor theory. Considering various forms of f(R) gravity this feature is illustrated for different choices of the parameters of the theory.

Effective Hamiltonian calculations for large quantum systems can be both analytically intractable and numerically expensive using standard techniques. In this manuscript, we present numerical techniques inspired by Nonperturbative Analytical Diagonalization (NPAD) and the Magnus expansion for the efficient calculation of effective Hamiltonians. While these tools are appropriate for a wide array of applications, we here demonstrate their utility for models that can be realized in circuit-QED settings. Our numerical techniques are available as an open-source Python package, ${\rm qCH_{eff}}$ (https://github.com/NVlabs/qCHeff), which uses the CuPy library for GPU-acceleration. We report up to 15x speedup on GPU over CPU for NPAD, and up to 42x speedup for the Magnus expansion (compared to QuTiP), for large system sizes., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures. Exploring nuclear physics through the fundamental constituents of the strong force -- quarks and gluons -- is a formidable challenge. While numerical calculations using lattice quantum chromodynamics offer the most promising approach for this pursuit, practical implementation is arduous, especially due to the uncontrollable growth of quark-combinatorics, the so-called Wick-contraction problem of nuclei. We present here two novel methods providing a state-of-the-art solution to this problem. In the first, we exploit randomized algorithms inspired from computational number theory to detect and eliminate redundancies that arise in Wick contraction computations. Our second method explores facilities for automation of tensor computations -- in terms of efficient utilization of specialized hardware, algorithmic optimizations, as well as ease of programming and the potential for automatic code generation -- that are offered by new programming models inspired by applications in machine learning (e.g., TensorFlow). We demonstrate the efficacy of our methods by computing two-point correlation functions for Deuteron, Helium-3, Helium-4 and Lithium-7, achieving at least an order of magnitude improvement over existing algorithms with efficient implementation on GPU-accelerators. Additionally, we discover an intriguing characteristic shared by all the nuclei we study: specific spin-color combinations dominate the correlation functions, hinting at a potential connection to an as-yet-unidentified symmetry in nuclei. Moreover finding them beforehand can reduce the computing time further and substantially. Our results, with the efficiency that we achieved, suggest the possibility of extending the applicability of our methods for calculating properties of light nuclei, potentially up to A ~12 and beyond., Comment: 68 pages with 6 tables and 23 figures including an Appendix. Bitumen extraction for the production of synthetic crude oil in Canada's Athabasca Oil Sands industry has recently come under spotlight for being a significant source of greenhouse gas emission. A major cause of concern is methane, a greenhouse gas produced by the anaerobic biodegradation of hydrocarbons in oil sands residues, or tailings, stored in settle basins commonly known as oil sands tailing ponds. In order to determine the methane emitting potential of these tailing ponds and have future methane projections, we use real-time weather data, mechanistic models developed from laboratory controlled experiments, and industrial reports to train a physics constrained machine learning model. Our trained model can successfully identify the directions of active ponds and estimate their emission levels, which are generally hard to obtain due to data sampling restrictions. We found that each active oil sands tailing pond could emit between 950 to 1500 tonnes of methane per year, whose environmental impact is equivalent to carbon dioxide emissions from at least 6000 gasoline powered vehicles. Although abandoned ponds are often presumed to have insignificant emissions, our findings indicate that these ponds could become active over time and potentially emit up to 1000 tonnes of methane each year. Taking an average over all datasets that was used in model training, we estimate that emissions around major oil sands regions would need to be reduced by approximately 12% over a year, to reduce the average methane concentrations to 2005 levels., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

Design and manufacturing of integrated circuits predominantly use a globally distributed semiconductor supply chain involving diverse entities. The modern semiconductor supply chain has been designed to boost production efficiency, but is filled with major security concerns such as malicious modifications (hardware Trojans), reverse engineering (RE), and cloning. While being deployed, digital systems are also subject to a plethora of threats such as power, timing, and electromagnetic (EM) side channel attacks. Many Design-for-Security (DFS) solutions have been proposed to deal with these vulnerabilities, and such solutions (DFS) relays on strategic modifications (e.g., logic locking, side channel resilient masking, and dummy logic insertion) of the digital designs for ensuring a higher level of security. However, most of these DFS strategies lack robust formalism, are often not human-understandable, and require an extensive amount of human expert effort during their development/use. All of these factors make it difficult to keep up with the ever growing number of microelectronic vulnerabilities. In this work, we propose X-DFS, an explainable Artificial Intelligence (AI) guided DFS solution-space exploration approach that can dramatically cut down the mitigation strategy development/use time while enriching our understanding of the vulnerability by providing human-understandable decision rationale. We implement X-DFS and comprehensively evaluate it for reverse engineering threats (SAIL, SWEEP, and OMLA) and formalize a generalized mechanism for applying X-DFS to defend against other threats such as hardware Trojans, fault attacks, and side channel attacks for seamless future extensions.

In the circuit model of quantum computing, amplitude amplification techniques can be used to find solutions to NP-hard problems defined on $n$-bits in time $\text{poly}(n) 2^{n/2}$. In this work, we investigate whether such general statements can be made for adiabatic quantum optimization, as provable results regarding its performance are mostly unknown. Although a lower bound of $\Omega(2^{n/2})$ has existed in such a setting for over a decade, a purely adiabatic algorithm with this running time has been absent. We show that adiabatic quantum optimization using an unstructured search approach results in a running time that matches this lower bound (up to a polylogarithmic factor) for a broad class of classical local spin Hamiltonians. For this, it is necessary to bound the spectral gap throughout the adiabatic evolution and compute beforehand the position of the avoided crossing with sufficient precision so as to adapt the adiabatic schedule accordingly. However, we show that the position of the avoided crossing is approximately given by a quantity that depends on the degeneracies and inverse gaps of the problem Hamiltonian and is NP-hard to compute even within a low additive precision. Furthermore, computing it exactly (or nearly exactly) is \#P-hard. Our work indicates a possible limitation of adiabatic quantum optimization algorithms, leaving open the question of whether provable Grover-like speed-ups can be obtained for any optimization problem using this approach., Comment: 29+17 pages, 3 figures

Dose prediction is an area of ongoing research that facilitates radiotherapy planning. Most commercial models utilise imaging data and intense computing resources. This study aimed to predict the dose-volume of rectum and bladder from volumes of target, at-risk structure organs and their overlap regions using machine learning. Dose-volume information of 94 patients with prostate cancer planned for 6000cGy in 20 fractions was exported from the treatment planning system as text files and mined to create a training dataset. Several statistical modelling, machine learning methods, and a new fuzzy rule-based prediction (FRBP) model were explored and validated on an independent dataset of 39 patients. The median absolute error was 2.0%-3.7% for bladder and 1.7-2.4% for rectum in the 4000-6420cGy range. For 5300cGy, 5600cGy and 6000cGy, the median difference was less than 2.5% for rectum and 3.8% for bladder. The FRBP model produced errors of 1.2%, 1.3%, 0.9% and 1.6%, 1.2%, 0.1% for the rectum and bladder respectively at these dose levels. These findings indicate feasibility of obtaining accurate predictions of the clinically important dose-volume parameters for rectum and bladder using just the volumes of these structures.

In the present paper, we discuss the class of Type III and Type IV codes from the perspectives of neighbors. Our investigation analogously extends the results originally presented by Dougherty [8] concerning the neighbor graph of binary self-dual codes. Moreover, as an application of neighbors in invariant theory, we show that the ring of the weight enumerators of Type II code $d_{n}^{+}$ and its neighbors in arbitrary genus is finitely generated.
