Search

Electrified Medium Scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (EMSTIDs) is one of the prominent plasma structures that affect the propagation of high frequency radio waves. Overall, seasonal variation and propagation characteristics of the EMSTIDs are widely reported in literature. However, the effects of substorms on the formation and dissipation of the EMSTIDs are not well explored. In the present study, on a moderately geomagnetically active night of 26 October 2019 (Ap=24), the airglow imager over Hanle (32.7{\deg}N, 78.9{\deg}E; Mlat. ~24.1{\deg}N), India recorded the evolution and decay of an EMSTID in the O(1D) 630.0 nm airglow images in between 13.3 UT and 15.8 UT. In addition, during the same time, a steep rise and fall of the virtual base height of the ionospheric F-layer were also recorded by a nearby digisonde over New Delhi (28.70{\deg}N, 77.10{\deg}E; Mlat. ~20.2{\deg}N). The most important aspect of the event was the occurrence of the two consecutive substorms in between 13.3 UT and 15.8 UT. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first of its kind study where we report the role of interplanetary electric field (IEF) and substorm induced electric fields on the evolution and decay of the EMSTID. This study elicits effects of the externally imposed electric fields on the mid-latitude ionospheric plasma structures and provides insight into the complex coupling between auroral and low-mid latitude region.

The abundance of helium ($A_{He}$) in the solar wind exhibits variations typically in the range from 2-5% with respect to solar cycle activity and solar wind velocity. However, there are instances where the observed $A_{He}$ is exceptionally low ($<$ 1%). These low-$A_{He}$ occurrences are detected both near the Sun and at 1 AU. The low $A_{He}$ events are generally observed near the heliospheric current sheet. We analyzed 28 low-$A_{He}$ events observed by the Wind spacecraft and 4 by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) to understand their origin. In this work, we make use of the ADAPT-WSA model to derive the sources of our events at the base of the solar corona. The modeling suggests that the low-$A_{He}$ events originated from the boundaries of coronal holes, primarily from large quiescent helmet streamers. We argue that the cusp above the core of the streamer can produce such very low helium abundance events. The streamer core serves as an ideal location for gravitational settling to occur as demonstrated by previous models, leading to the release of this plasma through reconnection near the cusp, resulting in low $A_{He}$ events. Furthermore, observations from Ulysses provide direct evidence that these events originated from coronal streamers.

The geo-effectiveness of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) is a critical area of study in space weather, particularly in the lesser-explored domain of CME-CME interactions and their geomagnetic consequences. This study leverages the SWASTi framework to perform 3D MHD simulation of a range of CME-CME interaction scenarios within realistic solar wind conditions. The focus is on the dynamics of the initial magnetic flux, speed, density, and tilt of CMEs, and their individual and combined impacts on the disturbance storm time (Dst) index. Additionally, the kinematic, magnetic, and structural impacts on the leading CME, as well as the mixing of both CMEs, are analyzed. Time series in-situ studies are conducted through virtual spacecraft positioned along three different longitudes at 1 AU. Our findings reveal that CME-CME interactions are non-uniform along different longitudes due to the inhomogeneous ambient solar wind conditions. A significant increase in the momentum and kinetic energy of the leading CME is observed due to collisions with the trailing CME, along with the formation of reverse shocks in cases of strong interaction. These reverse shocks lead to complex wave patterns inside CME2, which can prolong the storm recovery phase. In general, nighttime thermospheric 557.7 nm emission over mid-latitudes is predominantly masked by significantly larger mesospheric component, and hence, F-region plasma structures are rarely observed in this emission. This paper reports the first rare simultaneous detection of F-region plasma depleted structure in O($^1$D) 630.0 nm and O($^1$S) 557.7 nm airglow images from Hanle, India, a mid-latitude station (32.7{\deg}N, 78.9{\deg}E; Mlat. ~24.1{\deg}N) on a geomagnetically quiet night (Ap=3) of 26 June 2021. This indicates significant enhancement of thermospheric 557.7 nm emission. Interestingly, thermospheric 557.7 nm emission was not significant on the following geomagnetically quiet night as MSTID bands were only observed in 630.0 nm images. We show that enhanced dissociative recombination caused by descent of F-layer peak over the observation region coupled with the significant increase of the electron density at thermospheric 557.7 nm emission altitude enabled the detection of the plasma depleted structure on 26 June 2021.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are primary drivers of space weather and studying their evolution in the inner heliosphere is vital to prepare for a timely response. Solar wind streams, acting as background, influence their propagation in the heliosphere and associated geomagnetic storm activity. This study introduces SWASTi-CME, a newly developed MHD-based CME model integrated into the Space Weather Adaptive SimulaTion (SWASTi) framework. It incorporates a non-magnetized elliptic cone and a magnetized flux rope CME model. To validate the model's performance with in-situ observation at L1, two Carrington rotations were chosen: one during solar maxima with multiple CMEs, and one during solar minima with a single CME. The study also presents a quantitative analysis of CME-solar wind interaction using this model. To account for ambient solar wind effects, two scenarios of different complexity in solar wind conditions were established. The results indicate that ambient conditions can significantly impact some of the CME properties in the inner heliosphere. We found that the drag force on the CME front exhibits a variable nature, resulting in asymmetric deformation of the CME leading edge. Additionally, the study reveals that the impact on the distribution of CME internal pressure primarily occurs during the initial stage, while the CME density distribution is affected throughout its propagation. Moreover, regardless of the ambient conditions, it was observed that after a certain propagation time (t), the CME volume follows a non-fractal power-law expansion ($\propto t^{3.03-3.33}$) due to the attainment of a balanced state with ambient., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

Although the enhancements in the alpha-proton ratio in the solar wind (expressed as $A_{He} = N_a/N_p*100$) in the Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs) have been studied in the past, $A_{He}$ enhancements at the stream interface region received very little attention so far. In this letter, by extensively analyzing the stream interaction region (SIR) events observed in solar cycle 23 and 24, we show that the stream interface of alphas starts separating out from that of protons from the minimum of solar cycle 23. The population of alpha particles are enhanced compared to protons at higher angles between bulk velocity and local magnetic field (henceforth, bulk velocity angle) in the fast wind region of SIRs if the background solar wind is taken as reference. The analysis of differential velocities between alphas and protons also reveals that the faster alpha particles accumulate near the fast wind side of the stream interface region leading to enhancement of $A_{He}$. The investigation brings out, for the first time, the salient changes in $A_{He}$ in SIRs for the two solar cycles and highlight the importances of bulk velocity angle and differential velocity in the fast wind region for the changes in $A_{He}$ in SIRs.

This investigation is directed to understand the asymmetry in $\Delta$X variations caused due to the relative roles played by IMF Bz and IMF By in a particular interval (22:22 - 22:55 UT), during the main phase of a strong geomagnetic storm event of April 06, 2000 (Ap = 236). Two pairs of antipodal stations, being part of the SuperMAG network, are considered here. Ionospheric convection maps from SuperDARN network are used to understand spatio-temporal evolution of the DP2 ionospheric convection patterns over high-latitudes. The two-dimensional maps of equivalent currents are used to show signatures of global DP2 currents associated with the interplay effect between the two IMF components. Observations show increases in the difference in $\Delta$X variations between nearly antipodal stations from the Japanese-European/African sector with respect to the same between the nearly antipodal stations from the Pacific/American-Indian sector. This asymmetry is observed during the period when the absolute magnitude of IMF By is larger than that of IMF Bz resulting in a significant and conspicuous enhancement in IMF |By/Bz|. It is suggested that the distortions in DP2 cells and associated rotation of electrodynamic day-night divider, bring one pair of stations under the same DP2 cell and one station of the other pair under a different DP2 cell and throat flow region leading to the asymmetry in $\Delta$X variations between the antipodal stations. The Aditya-L1 is the first space-based solar observatory of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The spacecraft will carry seven payloads providing uninterrupted observations of the Sun from the first Lagrangian point. Aditya-L1 comprises four remote sensing instruments, {\it viz.} a coronagraph observing in visible and infrared, a full disk imager in Near Ultra-Violet (NUV), and two full-sun integrated spectrometers in soft X-ray and hard X-ray. In addition, there are three instruments for in-situ measurements, including a magnetometer, to study the magnetic field variations during energetic events. The detection of coherent X-ray pulsations at ~314 Hz (3.2 ms) classifies MAXI J1957+032 as a fast-rotating, accreting neutron star. We present the temporal and spectral analysis performed using NICER observations collected during the latest outburst of the source. Doppler modulation of the X-ray pulsation revealed the ultra-compact nature of the binary system characterised by an orbital period of ~1 hour and a projected semi-major axis of 14 lt-ms. The neutron star binary mass function suggests a minimum donor mass of 1.7e-2 Msun, assuming a neutron star mass of 1.4 Msun and a binary inclination angle lower than 60 degrees. This assumption is supported by the lack of eclipses or dips in the X-ray light curve of the source. We characterised the 0.5-10 keV energy spectrum of the source in outburst as the superposition of a relatively cold black-body-like thermal emission compatible with the emission from the neutron star surface and a Comptonisation component with photon index consistent with a typical hard state. Solar wind streams, acting as background, govern the propagation of space weather drivers in the heliosphere, which induce geomagnetic storm activities. Therefore, predictions of the solar wind parameters are the core of space weather forecasts. This work presents an indigenous three-dimensional (3D) Solar Wind model (SWASTi-SW). This numerical framework for forecasting the ambient solar wind is based on a well-established scheme that uses a semi-empirical coronal model and a physics-based inner heliospheric model. This study demonstrates a more generalized version of Wang-Sheeley-Arge (WSA) relation, which provides a speed profile input to the heliospheric domain. Line-of-sight observations of GONG and HMI magnetograms are used as inputs for the coronal model, which in turn, provides the solar wind plasma properties at 0.1 AU. These results are then used as an initial boundary condition for the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model of the inner heliosphere to compute the solar wind properties up to 2.1 AU. Along with the validation run for multiple Carrington rotations, the effect of variation of specific heat ratio and study of stream interaction region (SIR) is also presented. This work showcases the multi-directional features of SIRs and provides synthetic measurements for potential observations from the Solar Wind Ion Spectrometer (SWIS) subsystem of Aditya Solar wind Particle EXperiment (ASPEX) payload on-board ISRO's upcoming solar mission Aditya-L1., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

The neutron star low-mass X-ray binary SWIFT J1749.4-2807 is the only known eclipsing accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar. In this manuscript we perform a spectral characterization of the system throughout its 2021, two-week-long outburst, analyzing 11 NICER observations and quasi-simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR single observations at the outburst peak. The broadband spectrum is well-modeled with a black body component with a temperature of $\sim$0.6 keV, most likely consistent with a hot spot on the neutron star surface, and a Comptonisation spectrum with power-law index $\Gamma \sim 1.9$, arising from a hot corona at $\sim$12 keV. No direct emission from the disc was found, possibly due to it being too cool. A high truncation radius for the disc, i.e., at $\sim$20--30 R$_{G}$ , was obtained from the analysis of the broadened profile of the Fe line in the reflection component. The significant detection of a blue-shifted Fe XXVI absorption line at $\sim$7 keV indicates weakly relativistic X-ray disc winds, which are typically absent in the hard state of X-ray binaries. By comparing the low flux observed during the outburst and the one expected in a conservative mass-transfer, we conclude that mass-transfer in the system is highly non-conservative, as also suggested by the wind detection. Finally, using the Nicer spectra alone, we followed the system while it was fading to quiescence. During the outburst decay, as the spectral shape hardened, the hot spot on the neutron star surface cooled down and shrank, a trend which could be consistent with the pure power-law spectrum observed during quiescence., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure; accepted for publication on MNRAS

This work is directed to explore the efficacy of strong and consistent correlations between the $\Delta$X component of magnetic field at two equatorial/low-latitude stations at nearly antipodal locations during geomagnetic storms. The antipodal stations considered are Huancayo (HUA: 12.06$^\circ$S, 75.21$^\circ$W geographic; magnetic dip 0.3$^\circ$N) in the Peruvian longitude sector and Alibag (ABG: 18.64$^\circ$N, 72.87$^\circ$E geographic; magnetic dip 10$^\circ$N) in the Indian longitude sector. Six strong geomagnetic storm events during the period 2000-2005, falling in the maximum-to-declining phase of solar cycle 23, are analyzed for this study. These stations are part of the SuperMAG network and data from these stations are openly available. It is noted that although $\Delta$X variations over these two stations are, in general, uncorrelated, significant correlations are observed on certain occasions. Correlation coefficient of at least 75$\%$ for 10 minutes is defined as a requisite criterion to infer the possible connection between the $\Delta$X variations over these two stations. The ionospheric convection maps from the SuperDARN network are also used to understand the Spatio-temporal evolution of the two-cell ionospheric convection patterns over high-latitudes during these periods of observations. This exercise reveals that the $\Delta$X variations over the antipodal locations are significantly correlated when the two-cell convection maps show appropriate rotations and both the stations possibly come under the single cell. We propose a mechanism of intravalley spin-flip scattering in spin-valley coupled two dimensional systems by transferring momentum of light into exciton center of mass using optical vortex (OV) beams. By varying the dispersion of light using the topological charge of OV beam, we demonstrate a unique approach to control the intra-valley spin-flip scattering rate of excitons. From our photoluminescence measurements, we demonstrate that the intra-valley scattering rate in W-based TMDs can be tuned externally by OV beams. Variation of photoluminescence intensity with topological charges shows a crossover temperature (> 150 K), indicating competitions among time scales involving radiative recombination, spin-flip scattering, and thermal relaxations. Despite helium abundance (AHe = nH/nHe) is ~ 8 % at the solar photospheric/chromospheric heights, AHe can be found to exceed 8% in interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) on many occasions. Although various factors like interplanetary shocks, chromospheric evaporation and "sludge removal" have been separately invoked in the past to address the AHe enhancements in ICMEs, none of these processes could explain the variability of AHe in ICMEs comprehensively. Based on extensive analysis of 275 ICME events, we show that there is a solar activity variation of ICME averaged AHe values. The investigation also reveals that the first ionization potential effect as well as coronal temperature are not the major contributing factors for AHe enhancements in ICMEs. Investigation on concurrent solar flares and ICME events for 63 cases reveals that chromospheric evaporation in tandem with gravitational settling determine the AHe enhancements and variabilities beyond 8% in ICMEs. While chromospheric evaporation releases the helium from chromosphere into the corona, the gravitationally settled helium is thrown out during the ICMEs.We show that the intensity and timing of the preceding flares from the same active region from where the CME erupts are important factors to understand the AHe enhancements in ICMEs.

We present a spectral analysis of NuSTAR and NICER observations of the luminous, persistently accreting neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-2. The data were divided into different branches that the source traces out on the Z-track of the X-ray color-color diagram; namely the horizontal branch, normal branch, and the vertex between the two. The X-ray continuum spectrum was modeled in two different ways that produced a comparable quality fit. The spectra showed clear evidence of a reflection component in the form of a broadened Fe K line, as well as a lower energy emission feature near 1 keV likely due to an ionized plasma located far from the innermost accretion disk. We account for the reflection spectrum with two independent models (relxillns and rdblur*rfxconv). The inferred inclination is in agreement with earlier estimates from optical observations of ellipsoidal light curve modeling (relxillns: $i=67^{\circ}\pm4^{\circ}$, rdblur*rfxconv: $i=60^{\circ}\pm10^{\circ}$). The inner disk radius remains close to the NS ($R_{\rm in}\leq1.15\ R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$) regardless of the source position along the Z-track or how the 1 keV feature is modeled. Given the optically determined NS mass of $1.71\pm0.21\ M_{\odot}$, this corresponds to a conservative upper limit of $R_{\rm in}\leq19.5$ km for $M=1.92\ M_{\odot}$ or $R_{\rm in}\leq15.3$ km for $M=1.5\ M_{\odot}$. Results are presented of searches for continuous gravitational waves from 20 accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars with accurately measured spin frequencies and orbital parameters, using data from the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The search algorithm uses a hidden Markov model, where the transition probabilities allow the frequency to wander according to an unbiased random walk, while the $\mathcal{J}$-statistic maximum-likelihood matched filter tracks the binary orbital phase. Three narrow sub-bands are searched for each target, centered on harmonics of the measured spin frequency. The search yields 16 candidates, consistent with a false alarm probability of 30% per sub-band and target searched. These candidates, along with one candidate from an additional target-of-opportunity search done for SAX J1808.4$-$3658, which was in outburst during one month of the observing run, cannot be confidently associated with a known noise source. Additional follow-up does not provide convincing evidence that any are a true astrophysical signal. When all candidates are assumed non-astrophysical, upper limits are set on the maximum wave strain detectable at 95% confidence, $h_0^{95\%}$. The strictest constraint is $h_0^{95\%} = 4.7\times 10^{-26}$ from IGR J17062$-$6143. Constraints on the detectable wave strain from each target lead to constraints on neutron star ellipticity and $r$-mode amplitude, the strictest of which are $\epsilon^{95\%} = 3.1\times 10^{-7}$ and $\alpha^{95\%} = 1.8\times 10^{-5}$ respectively. The relative abundance of alpha particles with respect to proton, usually expressed as $A_{He}$ = ($n_\alpha/n_p$)*100, is known to respond to solar activity although changes in its behaviour in the last four solar cycles are not known. In this letter, by systematically analysing inter-calibrated $A_{He}$ data obtained from the first Lagrangian point of the Sun-Earth system, we show that $A_{He}$ variations are distinctively different in solar cycle 24 as compared to the last three cycles. The frequency of $A_{He}$ = 2-3% events is significantly higher in slow/intermediate solar winds in cycle 24 as opposed to the dominance of the typical $A_{He}$ = 4-5% events in the previous three cycles. Further, the occurrence of $A_{He}$ $\geq$ 10% events is significantly reduced in cycle 24. Not only that, the changes in delay of $A_{He}$ with respect to peak sunspot numbers are less sensitive to changes in solar wind velocity in cycle 24. The investigation suggests that the coronal magnetic field configuration started undergoing systematic changes starting from cycle 23 and this altered magnetic field configuration affected the way helium got processed and depleted in the solar atmosphere.

We present the first joint NuSTAR and NICER observations of the ultra-compact X-ray binary (UCXB) 4U 1543$-$624 obtained in 2020 April. The source was at a luminosity of $L_{0.5-50\ \mathrm{keV}} = 4.9 (D/7\ \mathrm{kpc})^{2}\times10^{36}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ and showed evidence of reflected emission in the form of an O VIII line, Fe K line, and Compton hump within the spectrum. We used a full reflection model, known as xillverCO, that is tailored for the atypical abundances found in UCXBs, to account for the reflected emission. We tested the emission radii of the O and Fe line components and conclude that they originate from a common disk radius in the innermost region of the accretion disk ($R_{\rm in} \leq1.07\ R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$). Assuming that the compact accretor is a neutron star (NS) and the position of the inner disk is the Alfv\'{e}n radius, we placed an upper limit on the magnetic field strength to be $B\leq0.7(D/7\ \mathrm {kpc})\times10^{8}$ G at the poles. Given the lack of pulsations detected and position of $R_{\rm in}$, it was likely that a boundary layer region had formed between the NS surface and inner edge of the accretion disk with an extent of 1.2 km. This implies a maximum radius of the neutron star accretor of $R_{\mathrm{NS}}\leq 12.1$ km when assuming a canonical NS mass of 1.4 $M_{\odot}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

MAXI J1807+132 is a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) first detected in outburst in 2017. Observations during the 2017 outburst did not allow for an unambiguous identification of the nature of the compact object. MAXI J1807+132 was detected in outburst again in 2019 and was monitored regularly with NICER. In this paper we report on five days of observations during which we detected three thermonuclear (Type-I) X-ray bursts, identifying the system as a neutron star LMXB. Time-resolved spectroscopy of the three Type-I bursts revealed typical characteristics expected for these phenomena. All three Type-I bursts show slow rises and long decays, indicative of mixed H/He fuel. We find no strong evidence that any of the Type-I bursts reached the Eddington Luminosity; however, under the assumption that the brightest X-ray burst underwent photospheric radius expansion, we estimate a <12.4kpc upper limit for the distance. We searched for burst oscillations during the Type-I bursts from MAXI J1807+132 and found none (<10% amplitude upper limit at 95% confidence level). Finally, we found that the brightest Type-I burst shows a ~1.6sec pause during the rise. This pause is similar to one recently found with NICER in a bright Type-I burst from the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. The fact that Type-I bursts from both sources can show this type of pause suggests that the origin of the pauses is independent of the composition of the burning fuel, the peak luminosity of the Type-I bursts, or whether the NS is an X-ray pulsar., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Swift J1858.6-0814 is a recently discovered X-ray binary notable for extremely strong variability (by factors $>100$ in soft X-rays) in its discovery state. We present the detection of five thermonuclear (Type I) X-ray bursts from Swift J1858.6-0814, implying that the compact object in the system is a neutron star. Some of the bursts show photospheric radius expansion, so their peak flux can be used to estimate the distance to the system. The peak luminosity, and hence distance, can depend on several system parameters; for the most likely values, a high inclination and a helium atmosphere, $D=12.8_{-0.6}^{+0.8}$ kpc, although systematic effects allow a conservative range of $9-18$ kpc. Before one burst, we detect a QPO at $9.6\pm0.5$ mHz with a fractional rms amplitude of $2.2\pm0.2$% ($0.5-10$ keV), likely due to marginally stable burning of helium; similar oscillations may be present before the other bursts but the light curves are not long enough to allow their detection. We also search for burst oscillations but do not detect any, with an upper limit in the best case of 15% fractional amplitude (over $1-8$ keV). Finally, we discuss the implications of the neutron star accretor and this distance on other inferences which have been made about the system. Solar X-ray Monitor (XSM) instrument of India's Chandrayaan-2 lunar mission carries out broadband spectroscopy of the Sun in soft X-rays. XSM, with its unique features such as low background, high time cadence, and high spectral resolution, provides the opportunity to characterize transient and quiescent X-ray emission from the Sun even during low activity periods. It records the X-ray spectrum at one-second cadence, and the data recorded on-board are downloaded at regular intervals along with that of other payloads. During ground pre-processing, the XSM data is segregated, and the level-0 data is made available for higher levels of processing at the Payload Operations Center (POC). XSM Data Analysis Software (XSMDAS) is developed to carry out the processing of the level-0 data to higher levels and to generate calibrated light curves and spectra for user-defined binning parameters such that it is suitable for further scientific analysis. A front-end for the XSMDAS named XSM Quick Look Display (XSMQLD) is also developed to facilitate a first look at the data without applying calibration. XSM Data Management-Monitoring System (XSMDMS) is designed to carry out automated data processing at the POC and to maintain an SQLite database with relevant information on the data sets and an internal web application for monitoring data quality and instrument health. All XSM raw and calibrated data products are in FITS format, organized into day-wise files, and the data archive follows Planetary Data System-4 (PDS4) standards. The XSM data will be made available after a lock-in period along with the XSM Data Analysis Software from ISRO Science Data Archive (ISDA) at Indian Space Science Data Center(ISSDC). It is commonly assumed that the properties and geometry of the accretion flow in transient low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) significantly change when the X-ray luminosity decays below $\sim 10^{-2}$ of the Eddington limit ($L_{\rm Edd}$). However, there are few observational cases where the evolution of the accretion flow is tracked in a single X-ray binary over a wide dynamic range. In this work, we use NuSTAR and NICER observations obtained during the 2018 accretion outburst of the neutron star LMXB 4U 1608-52, to study changes in the reflection spectrum. We find that the broad Fe-K$\alpha$ line and Compton hump, clearly seen during the peak of the outburst when the X-ray luminosity is $\sim 10^{37}$ erg/s ($\sim 0.05$ $L_{\rm Edd}$), disappear during the decay of the outburst when the source luminosity drops to $\sim 4.5 \times 10^{35}$ erg/s ($\sim 0.002$ $L_{\rm Edd}$). We show that this non-detection of the reflection features cannot be explained by the lower signal-to-noise at lower flux, but is instead caused by physical changes in the accretion flow. Simulating synthetic NuSTAR observations on a grid of inner disk radius, disk ionisation, and reflection fraction, we find that the disappearance of the reflection features can be explained by either increased disk ionisation ($\log \xi \geq 4.1$) or a much decreased reflection fraction. A changing disk truncation alone, however, cannot account for the lack of reprocessed Fe-K$\alpha$ emission. The required increase in ionisation parameter could occur if the inner accretion flow evaporates from a thin disk into a geometrically thicker flow, such as the commonly assumed formation of an radiatively inefficient accretion flow at lower mass accretion rates., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

NICER observed several rotation-powered millisecond pulsars to search for or confirm the presence of X-ray pulsations. When broad and sine-like, these pulsations may indicate thermal emission from hot polar caps at the magnetic poles on the neutron star surface. We report confident detections ($\ge4.7\sigma$ after background filtering) of X-ray pulsations for five of the seven pulsars in our target sample: PSR J0614-3329, PSR J0636+5129, PSR J0751+1807, PSR J1012+5307, and PSR J2241-5236, while PSR J1552+5437 and PSR J1744-1134 remain undetected. Of those, only PSR J0751+1807 and PSR J1012+5307 had pulsations previously detected at the 1.7$\sigma$ and almost 3$\sigma$ confidence levels, respectively, in XMM-Newton data. All detected sources exhibit broad sine-like pulses, which are indicative of surface thermal radiation. As such, these MSPs are promising targets for future X-ray observations aimed at constraining the neutron star mass-radius relation and the dense matter equation of state using detailed pulse profile modeling. Furthermore, we find that three of the detected millisecond pulsars exhibit a significant phase offset between their X-ray and radio pulses., Comment: 25 pages, 11 tables, 4 figures. We report on X-ray and radio observations of the ultra-compact X-ray binary 4U 1543-624 taken in August 2017 during an enhanced accretion episode. We obtained NICER monitoring of the source over a $\sim10$ day period during which target-of-opportunity observations were also conducted with Swift, INTEGRAL, and ATCA. Emission lines were measured in the NICER X-ray spectrum at $\sim0.64$ keV and $\sim6.4$ keV that correspond to O and Fe, respectively. By modeling these line components, we are able to track changes in the accretion disk throughout this period. The innermost accretion flow appears to move inwards from hundreds of gravitational radii ($R_{g}=GM/c^{2}$) at the beginning of the outburst to $<8.7$ $R_{g}$ at peak intensity. We do not detect the source in radio, but are able to place a $3\sigma$ upper limit on the flux density at $27$ $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$. Comparing the radio and X-ray luminosities, we find that the source lies significantly away from the range typical of black holes in the ${L}_{{r}}$-${L}_{{x}}$ plane, suggesting a neutron star (NS) primary. This adds to the evidence that NSs do not follow a single track in the ${L}_{{r}}$-${L}_{{x}}$ plane, limiting its use in distinguishing between different classes of NSs based on radio and X-ray observations alone., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the discovery with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) of narrow emission and absorption lines during photospheric radius expansion (PRE) X-ray bursts from the ultracompact binary 4U 1820-30. NICER observed the source in 2017 August accumulating about 60 ks of exposure. Five thermonuclear X-ray bursts were detected of which four showed clear signs of PRE. We extracted spectra during the PRE phases and fit each to a model that includes a comptonized component to describe the accretion-driven emission, and a black body for the burst thermal radiation. The temperature and spherical emitting radius of the fitted black body are used to assess the strength of PRE in each burst. The two strongest PRE bursts (burst pair 1) had black body temperatures of approximately 0.6 keV and emitting radii of 100 km (at a distance of 8.4 kpc). The other two bursts (burst pair 2) had higher temperatures (~0.67 keV) and smaller radii (75 km). All of the PRE bursts show evidence of narrow line emission near 1 keV. By co-adding the PRE phase spectra of burst pairs 1 and, separately, 2 we find, in both co-added spectra, significant, narrow, spectral features near 1.0 (emission), 1.7 and 3.0 keV (both in absorption). Remarkably, all the fitted line centroids in the co-added spectrum of burst pair 1 appear systematically blue-shifted by a factor of $1.046 \pm 0.006$ compared to the centroids of pair 2, strongly indicative of a gravitational red-shift, a wind-induced blue-shift, or more likely some combination of both effects. The observed shifts are consistent with this scenario in that the stronger PRE bursts in pair 1 reach larger photospheric radii, and thus have weaker gravitational red-shifts, and they generate faster outflows, yielding higher blue-shifts. We report on the discovery by the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J17591-2342, detecting coherent X-ray pulsations around 527.4 Hz (1.9 ms) with a clear Doppler modulation. This implies an orbital period of ~8.8 hours and a projected semi-major axis of ~1.23 lt-s. From the binary mass function, we estimate a minimum companion mass of 0.42 solar masses, obtained assuming a neutron star mass of 1.4 solar masses and an inclination angle lower than 60 degrees, as suggested by the absence of eclipses or dips in the light-curve of the source. The broad-band energy spectrum is dominated by Comptonisation of soft thermal seed photons with a temperature of ~0.7 keV by electrons heated to 21 keV. We also detect black-body-like thermal direct emission compatible with an emission region of a few kilometers and temperature compatible with the seed source of Comptonisation. A weak Gaussian line centered on the iron K-alpha; complex can be interpreted as a signature of disc reflection. Accretion disks around neutron stars regularly undergo sudden strong irradiation by Type I X-ray bursts powered by unstable thermonuclear burning on the stellar surface. We investigate the impact on the disk during one of the first X-ray burst observations with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) on the International Space Station. The burst is seen from Aql X-1 during the hard spectral state. In addition to thermal emission from the neutron star, the burst spectrum exhibits an excess of soft X-ray photons below 1 keV, where NICER's sensitivity peaks. We interpret the excess as a combination of reprocessing by the strongly photoionized disk and enhancement of the pre-burst persistent flux, possibly due to Poynting Robertson drag or coronal reprocessing. This is the first such detection for a short sub-Eddington burst. As these bursts are observed frequently, NICER will be able to study how X-ray bursts affect the disk and corona for a range of accreting neutron star systems and disk states., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, published by ApJ Letters

The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) on the International Space Station (ISS) observed strong photospheric expansion of the neutron star in 4U 1820-30 during a Type I X-ray burst. A thermonuclear helium flash in the star's envelope powered a burst that reached the Eddington limit. Radiation pressure pushed the photosphere out to ~200 km, while the blackbody temperature dropped to 0.45 keV. Previous observations of similar bursts were performed with instruments that are sensitive only above 3 keV, and the burst signal was weak at low temperatures. NICER's 0.2-12 keV passband enables the first complete detailed observation of strong expansion bursts. The strong expansion lasted only 0.6 s, and was followed by moderate expansion with a 20 km apparent radius, before the photosphere finally settled back down at 3 s after the burst onset. In addition to thermal emission from the neutron star, the NICER spectra reveal a second component that is well fit by optically thick Comptonization. During the strong expansion, this component is six times brighter than prior to the burst, and it accounts for 71% of the flux. In the moderate expansion phase, the Comptonization flux drops, while the thermal component brightens, and the total flux remains constant at the Eddington limit. We speculate that the thermal emission is reprocessed in the accretion environment to form the Comptonization component, and that changes in the covering fraction of the star explain the evolution of the relative contributions to the total flux., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, published by ApJ Letters

Swift J0243.6+6124 is a newly discovered Galactic Be/X-ray binary, revealed in late September 2017 in a giant outburst with a peak luminosity of 2E+39 (d/7 kpc)^2 erg/s (0.1-10 keV), with no formerly reported activity. At this luminosity, Swift J0243.6+6124 is the first known galactic ultraluminous X-ray pulsar. We describe Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER)} and Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) timing and spectral analyses for this source. A new orbital ephemeris is obtained for the binary system using spin-frequencies measured with GBM and 15-50 keV fluxes measured with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Burst Alert Telescope to model the system's intrinsic spin-up. Power spectra measured with NICER show considerable evolution with luminosity, including a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) near 50 mHz that is omnipresent at low luminosity and has an evolving central frequency. Pulse profiles measured over the combined 0.2-100 keV range show complex evolution that is both luminosity and energy dependent. Near the critical luminosity of L~1E+38 erg/s, the pulse profiles transition from single-peaked to double peaked, the pulsed fraction reaches a minimum in all energy bands, and the hardness ratios in both NICER and GBM show a turn-over to softening as the intensity increases. This behavior repeats as the outburst rises and fades, indicating two distinct accretion regimes. These two regimes are suggestive of the accretion structure on the neutron star surface transitioning from a Coulomb collisional stopping mechanism at lower luminosities to a radiation-dominated stopping mechanism at higher luminosities. We present Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary Serpens X-1 during the early mission phase in 2017. With the high spectral sensitivity and low-energy X-ray passband of NICER, we are able to detect the Fe L line complex in addition to the signature broad, asymmetric Fe K line. We confirm the presence of these lines by comparing the NICER data to archival observations with XMM-Newton/RGS and NuSTAR. Both features originate close to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). When modeling the lines with the relativistic line model RELLINE, we find the Fe L blend requires an inner disk radius of $1.4_{-0.1}^{+0.2}$ $R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$ and Fe K is at $1.03_{-0.03}^{+0.13}$ $R_{\mathrm{ISCO}}$ (errors quoted at 90%). This corresponds to a position of $17.3_{-1.2}^{+2.5}$ km and $12.7_{-0.4}^{+1.6}$ km for a canonical neutron star mass ($M_{\mathrm{NS}}=1.4\ M_{\odot}$) and dimensionless spin value of $a=0$. We report on the kinematics of two interacting CMEs observed on 13 and 14 June 2012. Both CMEs originated from the same active region NOAA 11504. After their launches which were separated by several hours, they were observed to interact at a distance of 100 Rs from the Sun. The interaction led to a moderate geomagnetic storm at the Earth with Dst index of approximately, -86 nT. The kinematics of the two CMEs is estimated using data from the Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) onboard the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO). Assuming a head-on collision scenario, we find that the collision is inelastic in nature. Further, the signatures of their interaction are examined using the in situ observations obtained by Wind and the Advance Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft. It is also found that this interaction event led to the strongest sudden storm commencement (SSC) (approximately 150 nT) of the present Solar Cycle 24. We present a comprehensive X-ray study of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary IGR J17062-6143, which has been accreting at low luminosities since its discovery in $2006$. Analysing NuSTAR, XMM-Newton and Swift observations, we investigate the very faint nature of this source through three approaches: modelling the relativistic reflection spectrum to constrain the accretion geometry, performing high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy to search for an outflow, and searching for the recently reported millisecond X-ray pulsations. We find a strongly truncated accretion disk at $77^{+22}_{-18}$ gravitational radii ($\sim 164$ km) assuming a high inclination, although a low inclination and a disk extending to the neutron star cannot be excluded. The high-resolution spectroscopy reveals evidence for oxygen-rich circumbinary material, possibly resulting from a blueshifted, collisionally-ionised outflow. Finally, we do not detect any pulsations. We discuss these results in the broader context of possible explanations for the persistent faint nature of weakly accreting neutron stars. The results are consistent with both an ultra-compact binary orbit and a magnetically truncated accretion flow, although both cannot be unambigiously inferred. An array of eight CsI(Tl) detectors has been set up to measure the light charged particles in nuclear reactions using heavy ions from the Pelletron Linac Facility, Mumbai. The energy response of CsI(Tl) detector to $\alpha$-particles from 5 to 40 MeV is measured using radioactive sources and the $^{12}$C($^{12}$C, $\alpha$) reaction populating discrete states in $^{20}$Ne. The energy non-linearity and the count rate effect on the pulse shape discrimination property have also been measured and observed the deterioration of pulse shape discrimination with higher count rate., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Due to observational challenges our knowledge of low-level accretion flows around neutron stars is limited. We present Nustar, Swift and Chandra observations of the low-mass X-ray binary IGR J17062-6143, which has been persistently accreting at ~0.1 per cent of the Eddington limit since 2006. Our simultaneous Nustar/Swift observations show that the 0.5-79 keV spectrum can be described by a combination of a power law with a photon index of Gamma~2, a black body with a temperature of kT_bb~0.5 keV (presumably arising from the neutron star surface), and disk reflection. Modeling the reflection spectrum suggests that the inner accretion disk was located at R_in>100 GM/c2 (>225 km) from the neutron star. The apparent truncation may be due to evaporation of the inner disk into a radiatively-inefficient accretion flow, or due to the pressure of the neutron star magnetic field. Our Chandra gratings data reveal possible narrow emission lines near 1 keV that can be modeled as reflection or collisionally-ionized gas, and possible low-energy absorption features that could point to the presence of an outflow. We consider a scenario in which this neutron star has been able to sustain its low accretion rate through magnetic inhibition of the accretion flow, which gives some constraints on its magnetic field strength and spin period. A detailed investigation was carried out to understand a prolonged (~44 hours) weakly southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF-Bz) condition during May 02--04, 1998. In-situ observations, during the period, showed the passage of an expanding magnetic cloud embedded in an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME), followed up by a shock and an interplanetary discontinuity driven by another ICME. It is the arrival of the ICMEs and the upfront shocks that cause the prolonged southward IMF-Bz condition. The magnetic configuration of the source regions of the IMF associated with the ICME interval were also examined, which showed open magnetic field structures, emanating from a small active region on the north of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS). The structures remained constantly to the north of the HCS, both on April 29 and May 01, suggesting no change in their polarity. The draping of these outward directed radial field lines around the propagating CMEs in the shocked plasma explained the observed polarity changes of the IMF-Bz at 1 AU. In addition, multiple enhancements were also detected in the geomagnetic field variations, which showed a distinct one-to-one correspondence with the density pulses observed at 1 AU, during 0700--1700 UT on May 03. The spectral analysis of both the variations showed the same discrete frequencies of 0.48, 0.65 and 0.75 mHz, demonstrating that the solar wind density enhancements can cause detectable global geomagnetic disturbances. Observational evidence has been accumulating that thermonuclear X-ray bursts ignited on the surface of neutron stars influence the surrounding accretion flow. Here, we exploit the excellent sensitivity of NuSTAR up to 79 keV to analyze the impact of an X-ray burst on the accretion emission of the neutron star LMXB 4U 1608-52. The ~200 s long X-ray burst occurred during a hard X-ray spectral state, and had a peak intensity of ~30-50 per cent of the Eddington limit with no signs of photospheric radius expansion. Spectral analysis suggests that the accretion emission was enhanced up to a factor of ~5 during the X-ray burst. We also applied a linear unsupervised decomposition method, namely non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), to study this X-ray burst. We find that the NMF performs well in characterizing the evolution of the burst emission and is a promising technique to study changes in the underlying accretion emission in more detail than is possible through conventional spectral fitting. For the burst of 4U 1608-52, the NMF suggests a possible softening of the accretion spectrum during the X-ray burst, which could potentially be ascribed to cooling of a corona. Finally, we report a small (~3 per cent) but significant rise in the accretion emission ~0.5 h before the X-ray burst, although it is unclear whether this was related to the X-ray burst ignition., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, 1 table, to appear in MNRAS

Pairing reentrance phenomenon in the warm rotating $^{104}$Pd nucleus is studied within the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-based approach (the FTBCS1). The theory takes into account the effect of quasiparticle number fluctuations on the pairing field at finite temperature and angular momentum within the pairing model plus noncollective rotation along the symmetry axis. The numerical calculations for the pairing gaps and nuclear level densities (NLD), of which an anomalous enhancement has been experimentally observed at low excitation energy $E^*$ and high angular momentum $J$, show that the pairing reentrance is seen in the behavior of pairing gap obtained within the FTBCS1 at low $E$ and high $J$. This leads to the enhancement of the FTBCS1 level densities, in good agreement with the experimental observation. We report on NuSTAR and Swift observations of a soft state of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary GS 1826-24, commonly known as the "clocked" burster. The transition to the soft state was recorded in 2014 June through an increase of the 2-20 keV source intensity measured by MAXI, simultaneous with a decrease of the 15-50 keV intensity measured by Swift/BAT. The episode lasted approximately two months, after which the source returned to its usual hard state. We analyze the broad-band spectrum measured by Swift/XRT and NuSTAR, and estimate the accretion rate during the soft episode to be about 13% of Eddington, within the range of previous observations. However, the best fit spectral model, adopting the double Comptonization used previously, exhibits significantly softer components. We detect seven type-I X-ray bursts, all significantly weaker (and with shorter rise and decay times) than observed previously. The burst profiles and recurrence times vary significantly, ruling out the regular bursts that are typical for this source. One burst exhibited photospheric radius expansion, and we estimate the source distance at about (5.7 / xi_b^1/2) kpc, where xi_b parameterizes the possible anisotropy of the burst emission. Interpreting the soft state as a transition from an optically thin inner flow to an optically thick flow passing through a boundary layer, as is commonly observed in similar systems, is contradicted by the lower optical depth measured for the double Comptonization model we find for this soft state. Studying the reflection of X-rays off the inner edge of the accretion disk in a neutron star low-mass X-ray binary, allows us to investigate the accretion geometry and to constrain the radius of the neutron star. We report on a NuSTAR observation of 4U 1608-52 obtained during a faint outburst in 2014 when the neutron star, which has a known spin frequency of 620 Hz, was accreting at ~1-2% of the Eddington limit. The 3-79 keV continuum emission was dominated by a Gamma~2 power law, with a ~1-2% contribution from a kTbb~0.3-0.6 keV black body component. The high-quality NuSTAR spectrum reveals the hallmarks of disk reflection; a broad iron line peaking near 7~keV and a Compton back-scattering hump around ~20-30 keV. Modeling the disk reflection spectrum points to a binary inclination of i~30-40 degrees and a small `coronal' height of h<8.5 GM/c2. Furthermore, our spectral analysis suggests that the inner disk radius extended to Rin~7-10 GM/c2, close to the innermost stable circular obit. This constrains the neutron star radius to R<21 km and the redshift from the stellar surface to z>0.12, for a mass of M=1.5 Msun and a spin parameter of a=0.29., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, MNRAS Letters in press

We report on a 10 ks simultaneous Chandra/HETG-NuSTAR observation of the Bursting Pulsar, GRO J1744-28, during its third detected outburst since discovery and after nearly 18 years of quiescence. The source is detected up to 60 keV with an Eddington persistent flux level. Seven bursts, followed by dips, are seen with Chandra, three of which are also detected with NuSTAR. Timing analysis reveals a slight increase in the persistent emission pulsed fraction with energy (from 10% to 15%) up to 10 keV, above which it remains constant. The 0.5-70 keV spectra of the persistent and dip emission are the same within errors, and well described by a blackbody (BB), a power-law with an exponential rolloff, a 10 keV feature, and a 6.7 keV emission feature, all modified by neutral absorption. Assuming that the BB emission originates in an accretion disc, we estimate its inner (magnetospheric) radius to be about 4x10^7 cm, which translates to a surface dipole field B~9x10^10 G. The Chandra/HETG spectrum resolves the 6.7 keV feature into (quasi-)neutral and highly ionized Fe XXV and Fe XXVI emission lines. XSTAR modeling shows these lines to also emanate from a truncated accretion disk. The burst spectra, with a peak flux more than an order of magnitude higher than Eddington, are well fit with a power-law with an exponential rolloff and a 10~keV feature, with similar fit values compared to the persistent and dip spectra. The burst spectra lack a thermal component and any Fe features.
