Abstract

This paper explores the role of multiple antennas in mitigating jamming attacks for the Rayleigh fading environment with exogenous random traffic arrival. The jammer is assumed to have energy harvesting ability where energy arrives according to Bernoulli process. The outage probabilities are derived with different assumptions on the number of antennas at the transmitter and receiver. The outage probability for the Alamouti space-time code is also derived. The work characterizes the average service rate for different antenna configurations taking into account of random arrival of data and energy at the transmitter and jammer, respectively. In many practical applications, latency and timely updates are of importance, thus, delay and Average Age of Information (AAoI) are the meaningful metrics to be considered. The work characterizes these metrics under jamming attack. The impact of finite and infinite energy battery size at the jammer on various performance metrics is also explored. Two optimization problems are considered to explore the interplay between AAoI and delay under jamming attack. Furthermore, our results show that Alamouti code can significantly improve the performance of the system even under jamming attack, with less power budget. Abstract

In this work, we investigate the successful data communication probability of an energy harvesting co-operative cognitive radio network (CRN) in the presence of Poisson field of primary users (PU). We consider the scenario where, after harvesting energy from primary transmitters (PTs), the secondary transmitter (ST) would transmit its symbol towards secondary destination (SD) through a suitable secondary relay from group of randomly scattered idle nodes within a circular region. We have considered several relay selection criteria in our work for a better relay node selection. We have also analytically evaluated the performance of secondary transmitter in terms of probability of successful symbol transmission. The relationship between the performance of ST and several network entities like density of PUs, transmit power of PTs and required transmit power of ST have been investigated through detailed analysis. The non-trivial trade-off between benefit of energy harvesting and interference from PTs has been explored in this present work. Numerical results are provided to verify the precision of derived analytical expressions.

26. Action Potential Parameters and Spiking Behavior of Cortical Neurons: A Statistical Analysis for Designing Spiking Neural Networks

Abstract

Cortical neurons exhibit several spiking dynamics both in in-vivo and in-vitro experiments. Neural spikes or action potentials (APs) are also observed in various shapes and forms. Statistical correlation between AP parameters and associated spiking behavior of a neuron is discussed in this article. Three fundamental parameters: 1) width; 2) height; and 3) energy of an AP along with spiking frequency and interspike interval (ISI) are extracted for 91 human cortical neurons selected from Allen Institute for Brain Science (AIBS) database. It has been shown that neurons firing narrow, short, and low-energy APs have higher spiking frequency compared to the neurons with wide and taller APs. For a rise in excitation, it has been presented that information gain for neurons firing wider spikes is less compared to information gain for neurons firing narrow spikes. It has been shown that neurons with low spiking frequency and high spiking frequency dissipate energy of similar order for total spiking activity for similar excitation. Implications of the statistical inferences drawn are explained for a computational model of a spiking neuron. The effect of changing AP width on the overall dynamics of a spiking neural network is also highlighted. The key findings of this study will be useful for designing spiking neural networks for various cognitive applications.

Abstract

Overloading is a technique to accommodate more number of users than the spreading factor N. This is a bandwidth efficient scheme to increase the number users in a fixed bandwidth. One of the efficient schemes to overload a CDMA system is to use two sets of orthogonal signal waveforms (O/O). The first set is assigned to the N users and the second set is assigned to the additional M users. An iterative interference cancellation technique is used to cancel interference between the two sets of users. In this paper, the performance of an overloading scheme in which the first N users are assigned Walsh-Hadamard orthogonal codes and extra users are assigned the same WH codes but overlaid by a fixed (quasi) bent sequence [11] is evaluated. This particular scheme is called Quasi-Orthogonal Sequence (QOS) O/O scheme, which is a part of cdma2000 standard [12] to provide overloading in the downlink using single user detector. QOS scheme are balance O/O scheme, where the correlation between any set-1 and set-2 users are equalized. The allowable overload of this scheme is investigated in the uplink on an AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels, so that the uncoded performance with iterative multistage interference cancellation detector remains close to the single user bound. It is shown that this scheme provides 19% and 11% overloading with SDIC technique for N= 16 and 64 respectively, with an SNR degradation of less than 0.35 dB as compared to single user bound at a BER of 0.00001. But on a Rayleigh fading channel, the channel overloading is 45% (29 extra users) at a BER of 0.0005, with an SNR degradation of about 1 dB as compared to single user performance for N=64.
