Ionic electroactive polymers made of PVA/C10MIMCl electrolytes were fabricated with high optical transparency and enhanced actuation performance due to the higher degree of ion dissociation and wider ion migration channels.

Transistors made up of carbon nanotube CNT have demonstrated excellent current–voltage characteristics which outperform some high-grade silicon-based transistors. A continuously tunable energy barrier across semiconductor interfaces is desired to make the CNT-based transistors more robust. Despite that the direct band gap of the carbyne inside a CNT can be widely tuned by strain, the size of the carbyne cannot be controlled easily. The production of a monoatomic chain with more than 6000 carbon atoms is an enormous technological challenge. To predict the optimal chain length of a carbyne in different molecular environments, we have developed a Monte Carlo model in which a finite-length carbyne with a size of 4000–15,000 atoms is encapsulated by a CNT at finite temperatures. Our simulation shows that the stability of the carbyne@nanotube is strongly influenced by the nature and porosity of the CNT, the external pressure, the temperature, and the chain length. We have observed an initiation of the chain-breaking process in a compressed carbyne@nanotube. Our work provides much-needed input for optimizing the carbyne length to produce carbon chains much longer than 6000 atoms at ~300 K. Design rules are proposed for synthesizing ~1% strained carbyne@(6,5)CNT as a component in CNT-based transistors to tune the energy barriers continuously.

Conjugated polymers (CPs) with remarkable photothermal effect were incorporated into liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) to develop near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive actuators with tunable deformation and locomotion.

Active packaging films have emerged as alternatives to replace petroleum-based packaging materials. In this work, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/starch/ethyl lauroyl arginate (LAE) films possessing enhanced properties were prepared. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that PVA and starch were compatible, the concentrations of LAE greatly affected the structural integrity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction showed that the inclusion of LAE did not significantly affect the intermolecular interactions and crystal structures of the polymer matrix. With an increase of the LAE content, the tensile strength (TS) was slightly decreased due to the altered microstructures, the elongation at break (EB) significantly increased ascribed to the synergistic effect of acetic acid, glycerol and LAE. The values of TS and EB were 17.25 MPa and 586.08%, respectively when LAE was 10%. Active films showed good barrier properties from UV while retaining the transmittance in the visible light region. The films containing 1% of LAE exhibited antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), the inhibition zone of bacterial growth gradually expanded with increasing LAE content. This study demonstrates the potential of using LAE as the antibacterial agent for synthesizing natural-based polymeric films for active packaging applications.

Leaf photosynthesis, coral mineralization, and trabecular bone growth depend on triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMSs) with hyperboloidal structure on every surface point with varying Gaussian curvatures. However, translation of this structure into tissue-engineered bone grafts is challenging. This article reports the design and fabrication of high-resolution three-dimensional TPMS scaffolds embodying biomimicking hyperboloidal topography with different Gaussian curvatures, composed of body inherent β-tricalcium phosphate, by stereolithography-based three-dimensional printing and sintering. The TPMS bone scaffolds show high porosity and interconnectivity. Notably, compared with conventional scaffolds, they can reduce stress concentration, leading to increased mechanical strength. They are also found to support the attachment, proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, and angiogenic paracrine function of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Through transcriptomic analysis, we theorize that the hyperboloid structure induces cytoskeleton reorganization of hMSCs, expressing elongated morphology on the convex direction and strengthening the cytoskeletal contraction. The clinical therapeutic efficacy of the TPMS scaffolds assessed by rabbit femur defect and mouse subcutaneous implantation models demonstrate that the TPMS scaffolds augment new bone formation and neovascularization. In comparison with conventional scaffolds, our TPMS scaffolds successfully guide the cell fate toward osteogenesis through cell-level directional curvatures and demonstrate drastic yet quantifiable improvements in bone regeneration.

This review is intended to provide an overview of the design and fabrication of ionic liquid-based ionic electroactive polymer (IL-iEAP) transducers for advanced applications in biological and electronic fields. The iEAP is a class of smart materials that can perform sensing or actuating functions by controlling the movement of cations and anions in the active layer. This type of material can deform under low voltage stimulation and generate electrical signals when undergoing mechanical deformation because of ion redistribution. Numerous research attention has been focused on studying the deformation mechanisms and the potential for actuation, sensing, and energy harvesting applications. Compared to the traditional water-based iEAP, the non-volatile IL-iEAP delivers a wider electrochemical window and a more stable actuation performance. In this paper, the classification of iEAP with different actuation mechanisms is first outlined, followed by introducing various preparation methods including nanotechnology for IL-iEAPs, and discussing the key factors governing their actuation performance. In addition, the advanced functions of IL-iEAP in actuating and sensing, especially self-sensing in bionics and electromechanical equipment applications, are reviewed. Finally, novel nanotechnologies used for fabricating IL-iEAPs and the prospects of their microelectromechanical system (MEMS) applications are discussed.

UV protection and coatings for plastics are important in many applications. The cladding of low microwave (MW) absorption composite coatings on high MW transparent plastic substrates is a challenge due to their disparate dielectric properties. Moreover, an uneven heat energy conversion within the composite creates an additional hurdle in producing a coating with good surface integrity. In this study, a protocol was developed to overcome these difficulties based on a hybrid approach. The adverse effect of temperature mismatch between the coating and substrate was reduced through a two-way susceptor-aided heating mechanism. Low MW absorbing sol–gel derived composite coatings consisting of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) were successfully cladded on the surface of MW and visual light transparent polycarbonate to produce a clear protective coating with UV-resistance. Nanoindentation tests were conducted to assess the effectiveness of the proposed protocol. Significant enhancement in the surface elastic modulus and hardness were achieved.

Microwave (MW) sintering offers higher heating rate, rapid processing, reduced energy consumption, and reduced sintering temperature. However, the technique is not fully understood, difficult to control, and often relies on experience and trial-and-error approach. Consequently, hot spots, uneven heating, thermal runaway, and shape distortion develop in sintered compacts. Therefore, developing a model that can simulate the sintering process, enhance predictability, and determine the critical sintering conditions is essential. Multiphysics finite element (FE) modelling of hybrid MW sintering of a magnesium alloy AZ61 compact was undertaken in this study. The FE model coupled the electromagnetic, heat conduction, and densification equations. The model utilised parameters related to the furnace, compact, and susceptor to predict the spatial distribution of electric field, thermal response, and densification in the compact. A power-based sintering criterion was developed to predict the sintering of the compact and estimate its critical sintering energy. Modelling results showed that heating time, compact size, and thickness of the susceptor are critical to the sintering process. It was also shown that the susceptor not only mediated the sintering of the compact but also homogenised its temperature and densification. Thus, MW sintering of the compact was predicted to occur at 500 °C for 8 to 10 min with a predicted relative density of about 0.98. Experimental MW sintering data showed good concurrence with the developed model. These results are useful for controlling the MW sintering process, eliminating trial-and-error, and determining the critical sintering conditions.

Two-photon polymerization direct laser writing (TPP DLW) is an emerging technology for producing advanced functional devices with complex three-dimensional (3D) micro-structures. Tremendous efforts have been devoted to developing two-photon polymerizable photo-sensitive nanocomposites with tailored properties. Light-induced reconfigurable smart materials such as liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are promising materials. However, due to the difficulties in designing two-photon polymerizable liquid crystal monomer (LCM) nanocomposite photoresists, it is challenging to fabricate true 3D LCE micro-structures. In this paper, we report the preparation of photo-sensitive LCE nanocomposites containing photothermal nanomaterials, including multiwalled carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide and gold nanorods (AuNRs), for TPP DLW. The printability of the LCE nanocomposites is assessed by the fidelity of the micro-structures under different laser writing conditions. DLW of GO/LCM photoresist has shown a vigorous bubble formation. This may be due to the excessive heat generation upon rapid energy absorption of 780 nm laser energy. Compared to pure LCM photoresists, AuNR/LCM photoresists have a lower laser intensity threshold and higher critical laser scanning speed, due to the high absorption of AuNRs at 780 nm, which enhanced the photo-sensitivity of the photoresist. Therefore, a shorter printing time can be achieved for the AuNR/LCM photoresist.

Micro/nano-fabrication technology via two-photon polymerization (TPP) nanolithography is a powerful and useful manufacturing tool that is capable of generating two dimensional (2D) to three dimensional (3D) arbitrary micro/nano-structures of various materials with a high spatial resolution. This technology has received tremendous interest in cell and tissue engineering and medical microdevices because of its remarkable fabrication capability for sophisticated structures from macro- to nano-scale, which are difficult to be achieved by traditional methods with limited microarchitecture controllability. To fabricate precisely designed 3D micro/nano-structures for biomedical applications via TPP nanolithography, the use of photoinitiators (PIs) and photoresists needs to be considered comprehensively and systematically. In this review, widely used commercially available PIs are first discussed, followed by elucidating synthesis strategies of water-soluble initiators for biomedical applications. In addition to the conventional photoresists, the distinctive properties of customized stimulus-responsive photoresists are discussed. Finally, current limitations and challenges in the material and fabrication aspects and an outlook for future prospects of TPP for biomedical applications based on different biocompatible photosensitive composites are discussed comprehensively. In all, this review provides a basic understanding of TPP technology and important roles of PIs and photoresists for fabricating high-precision stimulus-responsive micro/nano-structures for a wide range of biomedical applications.

Diamondoids are cage-like hydrocarbon materials with unique characteristics such as low dielectric constants, negative electron affinity, large steric bulk, and electron-donating ability. They are widely used for advanced functional materials in nanocomposite science. Surface modification of diamondoids also produces functional derivatives that broaden its applications. This article provides a concise review of the fundamentals of diamondoids, including their origin and functionalization, electronic structure, optical properties, and vibrational characteristics. The recent advances of diamondoids and their derivatives in applications, such as nanocomposites and thin film coatings, are presented. The fabrication of diamondoid-based nanostructured devices, including electron emitters, catalyst sensors, and light-emitting diodes, are also reviewed. Finally, the future developments of this unique class of hydrocarbon materials in producing a novel nanostructure system using advanced nanotechnologies are discussed. This review is intended to provide a basic understanding of diamondoid properties, discuss the recent progress of its modifications and functionalization, and highlight its novel applications and future prospects.

Electroactive hydrogels have received increasing attention due to the possibility of being used in biomimetics, such as for soft robotics and artificial muscles. However, the applications are hindered by the poor mechanical properties and slow response time. To address these issues, in this study, supramolecular ionic polymer–carbon nanotube (SIPC) composite hydrogels were fabricated via in situ free radical polymerization. The polymer matrix consisted of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), styrene sulfonic sodium (SSNa), β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-grafted acrylamide, and ferrocene (Fc)-grafted acrylamide, with the incorporation of SSNa serving as the ionic source. On applying an external voltage, the ions accumulate on one side of the matrix, leading to localized swelling and bending of the structure. Therefore, a controllable and reversible actuation can be achieved by changing the applied voltage. The tensile strength of the SIPC was improved by over 300%, from 12 to 49 kPa, due to the reinforcement effect of the CNTs and the supramolecular host–guest interactions between the β-CD and Fc moieties. The inclusion of CNTs not only improved the tensile properties but also enhanced the ion mobility, which lead to a faster electromechanical response. The presented electro-responsive composite hydrogel shows a high potential for the development of robotic devices and soft smart components for sensing and actuating applications.

Bacteria and cancer cells share a unique symbiotic relationship in the process of cancer development and treatment. It has been shown that certain bacteria can mediate cancer and thrive inside cancerous tissues. Moreover, during cancer treatment, microbial infections have been shown to impair the therapeutic efficacy and lead to serious complications. In the past decades, the application of antibiotics has achieved great success in fighting numerous bacteria but the administration route, low localization effects and related drug resistance limit the further utilization of antibiotics. Recently, advances in nanotechnology have made a significant impact in the medical field, which enhance the drug solubility and can target lesion sites, and some nanomaterials can even be applied as the therapeutic agent itself. In this review, we introduce anti-bacterial nanosystems for cancer therapy in the aspects of spontaneous and triggered anti-bacterial action, and our notions, as well as proposed research directions for the further development of this field, are discussed.

Open in a separate window Size- and shape-dependent features of plasmonic nanocrystals govern the development of their applications. In the past decades, gold nanostructures, such as gold nanorods and nanoshells, have been well studied and applied for sensing, bioimaging, and photothermal generation. However, knowledge of copper chalcogenide, a new generation of plasmonic nanomaterials, is limited, especially about their preparation and size- and shape-dependent photothermal properties. In this work, controllable size and shape Cu2–xS nanocrystals (NCs) are synthesized by a facile aqueous route. Using low-molecular-weight polyethylenimine (PEI) as the reducing and capping agents, the size and shape of Cu2–xS NCs can be controlled with lengths from 6.5 to 46.5 nm and the aspect ratio from 2.2 to 7.5 by adjusting the concentration of PEI. The plasmonic peak of Cu2–xS experiences a redshift (from 1145 to 1369 nm) when the length increases from 6.5 to 44.5 nm. Under the irradiation of 1064 nm laser with 1.33 W/cm2, an excellent photothermal conversion rate (from 34.9 to 49.0%) is obtained. The characterization of Cu2–xS NCs is conducted with a UV–vis spectrometer, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction measurements, and 1064 nm laser.

Four-dimensional (4D) printable light-powered materials have emerged as a new generation of materials for the development of functional devices. The design of these types of materials is mostly based on the trans-cis transformation of azobenzene moieties in a liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE) matrix, in which the motion is triggered by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. In this paper, we first report on a direct laser printable photoresist for producing light-powered 4D structures with enhanced mechanical properties and near-infrared (NIR) responsive mechanical deformation. The reported nanocomposite design is based on the photothermal effects of gold nanorods (AuNRs), which can induce the nematic-to-isotropic transition of LCE upon exposure to NIR irradiation. The miscibility between AuNRs and LCE is enhanced by thiol functionalization. Appropriate printing parameters are determined, and nanocomposites containing 0-3 wt % of AuNR loading are fabricated via femtosecond two-photon direct laser writing. The effects of the AuNR loading fraction and laser power on the light-powered actuating performance are evaluated. It is found that the nanocomposite with AuNR loading of 3 wt % demonstrates the maximum percentage (20%) of elongation under an NIR laser power of 2 W. An increase in laser power can lead to faster deformation but slower restoration. The nanocomposites demonstrate relatively good stability. Even after 300 actuation cycles, 80% of the elongation magnitude can be retained. In addition, an improvement of 80% in the complex modulus of the nanocomposites, due to the inclusion of AuNRs, is observed.

The application of developed thermal models has demonstrated that parameters, such as power, scanning velocity and spot diameter of laser beams have considerable effects on the formation of weld pools. The properties of the weld metal are heavily dependent on the solidification microstructure, and an accurate prediction of the weld pool solidification requires consideration in both the thermodynamics and kinetics of solidification. The computations we presented for a transient three-dimensional model show the aspects of weld pool formation and solidification in a quantitative manner. Our focus was the examination of heat transfer and fluid flow analysis in laser micro-welding of thin stainless-steel sheet (SUS304) using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. In this research work, a useful linkage between the laser micro-welding parameters and the geometry of the micro-weld can be derived from the results, and informative guidance was achieved as to how the width, depth and length of the weld pool differ during laser micro-welding as a function of spot diameter, scanning velocity and laser power. The simulation results have been compared with two sets of experimental data to predict the weld bead geometry and solidification pattern made on thin stainless steel sheet using a continuous wave (CW) fibre laser. The reasonable agreement between the simulated and experimental results, demonstrates the reliability of the computed model, and the results can be used to determine the laser micro-welding conditions necessary to achieve an appropriate target microstructure. However, the results allow estimation of acceptable ranges of welding variables, to attain the required micro-weld geometry.

The demands for achieving microencapsulated phase-change materials (MEPCMs) with high thermal-energy storage ability have motivated increasing research interest in inorganic filler-modified MEPCMs. However, challenges for such MEPCMs still exist in the pursuit of good compatibility of inorganic particles with the core or shell material. Here, a novel type of octadecylamine-grafted graphene oxide (GO-ODA) -modified MEPCMs using melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin as the shell material and the mixture of GO-ODA and n-octadecane as the core material was fabricated via in-situ polymerization. The alkylated GO with a thickness of ∼1 nm was confirmed to be highly compatible with the core material. The as-prepared MEPCMs with a regular spherical shape were dispersed without any agglomeration, and the size decreased with increasing the filling amounts of GO-ODA. The incorporation of GO-ODA promoted the crystallization of n-octadecane, resulting in an observable reduction in supercooling degree. The encapsulation efficiency of MEPCMs was calculated to be over 88.0%, and the melting/freezing latent heats reached to a level as high as 207.2 J g−1 and 202.5 J g−1, respectively, even at a tiny loading level of 0.5%. Besides, the GO-ODA incorporated MEPCMs showed a good thermal cycling stability during a phase change. Moreover, a substantial enhancement in thermal transfer rate and a less marked heating effect for the MEPCMs containing GO-ODA were observed from the thermal conductivity tests and infrared thermography analysis. The findings suggested that the prepared MEPCMs are promising for applications in the fields of thermal energy storage and temperature regulation due to their enhanced thermal transfer performance and prominent phase-change enthalpy.

Powder metallurgy and rapid microwave (MW) sintering techniques were successfully applied to engineer a hybrid cell structure into magnesium alloy AZ61 syntactic foams. The hybrid cell structure, comprising open- and closed-cells, originated from leached carbamide granules and hollow microspheres of fly ash (HS), respectively. External MW susceptors accelerated the sintering process and greatly mitigated the formation of undesirable interfacial reactions. The cell hybridisation technique facilitated control over the density and strength of the syntactic foams. Accordingly, floatable syntactic foams with a density of about 0.79 g/cm3 and compressive strength of 16 MPa were synthesised without recourse to any surface modification or chemically-induced superhydrophobicity. The processing techniques were capable of mitigating damage to the HS microspheres as confirmed by microstructural examinations. Furthermore, potential applications of the floatable syntactic foam sample, as a microboat and chemical release agent, were demonstrated by using ethanol as a propellant. AZ61 syntactic foams synthesised in this study exhibited low density and adequate strength, suggesting their applicability as alternative materials to polymer composite foams. Near infrared to ultraviolet (NIR-to-UV) up-conversion nanocomposites, composed of an upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) core and a transformable polyspiropyran shell, were prepared by distillation precipitation polymerization and the template method. The polyspiropyran shell can undergo reversible hydrophoblic-hydrophilic transformations through the switching of UV and visible light and by variation of pH. About 10 wt% of the anticancer drug, doxorubicin (DOX), can be loaded into the drug carrying layer under pH 7.4 by electrostatic force. The NIR and pH responsive features of the polyspiropyran shell were shown by the dynamic light scattering (DLS) results, in which the size of nanocomposites (UCNPs@SP-MA/MAA) became larger under NIR irradiation and pH 4.5. The hydrophobic to hydrophilic surface transformation alters the permittivity of the polyspiropyran shell and the release behavior. The cumulative release rate of the DOX-loaded UCNPs@SP-MA/MAA reached 53.8% under pH 4.5 and NIR irradiation. The cytotoxicity of the bare UCNPs@SP-MA/MAA and the DOX-loaded UCNPs@SP-MA/MAA were evaluated against breast cancer cells and the results confirmed that the toxicity of UCNPs@SP-MA/MAA nanocomposites was minimal, even at high dosage (100 μg/mL), while the toxicity of DOX can be triggered by NIR light.

Conventional core-shell polymer nanoparticles usually exhibit a rapid release rate with their release kinetics mainly adjusted through changing composition of the polymer shells, limiting their applications for prolonged drug delivery. As a solution to these problems, silica xerogel/polymer core-shell-structured composite nanoparticles have been proposed. Different with our previous work centring on studying process variables, we here focused on investigating the effects of key compositional variables on essential properties of the composite nanoparticles. This study examined (1) the influence of whole body vibration (WBV) frequency (20 Hz, 30 Hz, 40 Hz), amplitude (low: 0.8 mm and high: 1.5 mm) and body postures (high-squat, deep-squat, tip-toe standing) on WBV transmissibility and signal purity, and (2) the relationship between stroke motor impairment and WBV transmissibility/signal purity. Thirty-four participants with chronic stroke were tested under 18 different conditions with unique combinations of WBV frequency, amplitude, and body posture. Lower limb motor function and muscle spasticity were assessed using the Fugl-Meyer Assessment and Modified Ashworth Scale respectively. Nine tri-axial accelerometers were used to measure acceleration at the WBV platform, and the head, third lumbar vertebra, and bilateral hips, knees, and ankles. The results indicated that WBV amplitude, frequency, body postures and their interactions significantly influenced the vibration transmissibility and signal purity among people with chronic stroke. In all anatomical landmarks except the ankle, the transmissibility decreased with increased frequency, increased amplitude or increased knee flexion angle. The transmissibility was similar between the paretic and non-paretic side, except at the ankle during tip-toe standing. Less severe lower limb motor impairment was associated with greater transmissibility at the paretic ankle, knee and hip in certain WBV conditions. Leg muscle spasticity was not significantly related to WBV transmissibility. In clinical practice, WBV amplitude, frequency, body postures need to be considered regarding the therapeutic purpose. Good contact between the feet and vibration platform and symmetrical body-weight distribution pattern should be ensured.

The present study proposes an efficient processing scheme for fabricating carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-reinforced magnesium (Mg) alloy AZ61 composite foams with enhanced compressive and energy absorption properties. The scheme combines powder metallurgy, rapid microwave (MW) sintering, and pore wall reinforcement to overcome the low strength, non-uniform pore structure, prolonged sintering process, and high production cost associated with conventional unreinforced Mg-based foams. In the proposed scheme, a dual-stage mixing method is used to homogeneously disperse and incorporate CNTs into the matrix for strength enhancement, and susceptor role, and carbamide granules are used to control the pore size and porosity fractions. In addition, MW sintering is used to rapidly consolidate the samples in 20 min through the synergy between an external and an internal susceptor (i.e. CNTs), which facilitates uniform and volumetric heating of the entire samples. Thus, sample oxidation and the formation of deleterious secondary phases are minimised, while up to 69% energy is saved. Experimental results show that the dispersion and incorporation of CNTs into the matrix, via the present processing scheme, clearly enhance the compressive and energy absorption properties of the composite foams, as compared with the unreinforced foams. The proposed processing scheme is a rapid and energy-saving efficient technique, which can be used to fabricate high quality Mg alloy composite foams with improved compression and energy absorption properties.

In this study, dual-responsive polymeric nanocapsules, in which the state (swelling or collapse) can be repeatedly controlled by external stimuli (i.e., temperature and light), have been designed and prepared through distillation–precipitation polymerization. Temperature sensitive monomers of N-isopropylacrylamide are cross-linked by photoresponsive bis(methacryloylamino) onto a silica nanospherical template to form a core–shell (SiO2–PNIPAM/Azo) structure. The silica core is then removed by hydrofluoric acid to produce PNIPAM/Azo nanocapsules (P/ANCs) of diameter ∼238 nm at ∼25 °C. The size of the nanocapsule is temperature responsive and, as such, its diameter could be reduced to ∼182 nm on increasing the temperature to 40 °C.
