Knowledge about the biogeographic affinities of the world's tropical forests helps to better understand regional differences in forest structure, diversity, composition, and dynamics. Such understanding will enable anticipation of region-specific responses to global environmental change. Modern phylogenies, in combination with broad coverage of species inventory data, now allow for global biogeographic analyses that take species evolutionary distance into account. Here we present a classification of the world's tropical forests based on their phylogenetic similarity. We identify five principal floristic regions and their floristic relationships: ( i ) Indo-Pacific, ( ii ) Subtropical, ( iii ) African, ( iv ) American, and ( v ) Dry forests. Our results do not support the traditional neo- versus paleotropical forest division but instead separate the combined American and African forests from their Indo-Pacific counterparts. We also find indications for the existence of a global dry forest region, with representatives in America, Africa, Madagascar, and India. Accounting for climate change in invasive species risk assessments improves our understanding of potential future impacts and enhances our preparedness for the arrival of new non-native species. We combined traditional risk assessment for invasive species with habitat suitability modeling to assess risk to biodiversity based on climate change. We demonstrate our method by assessing the risk for 15 potentially new invasive plant species to Alberta, Canada, an area where climate change is expected to facilitate the poleward expansion of invasive species ranges. Of the 15 species assessed, the three terrestrial invasive plant species that could pose the greatest threat to Alberta's biodiversity are giant knotweed (Fallopia sachalinensis), tamarisk (Tamarix chinensis), and alkali swainsonpea (Sphaerophysa salsula). We characterise giant knotweed as 'extremely invasive', with 21 times the suitable habitat between baseline and future projected climate. Tamarisk is 'extremely invasive' with a 64% increase in suitable habitat, and alkali swainsonpea is 'highly invasive' with a 21% increase in suitable habitat. The high species richness of tropical forests has long been recognized, yet there remains substantial uncertainty regarding the actual number of tropical tree species. Using a pantropical tree inventory database from closed canopy forests, consisting of 657,630 trees belonging to 11,371 species, we use a fitted value of Fisher's alpha and an approximate pantropical stem total to estimate the minimum number of tropical forest tree species to fall between ∼ 40,000 and ∼ 53,000, i.e., at the high end of previous estimates. Contrary to common assumption, the Indo-Pacific region was found to be as species-rich as the Neotropics, with both regions having a minimum of ∼ 19,000-25,000 tree species. Continental Africa is relatively depauperate with a minimum of ∼ 4,500-6,000 tree species. Very few species are shared among the African, American, and the Indo-Pacific regions. We provide a methodological framework for estimating species richness in trees that may help refine species richness estimates of tree-dependent taxa.

We evaluated the effects of Bio-Oss® (a natural bone substitute derived from the mineral portion of bovine bone) on delayed osseointegration of implants. The bilateral third and fourth mandibular premolars of 4 adult, healthy, male and female dogs were extracted. We randomly selected 2 extraction sockets in each dog to be filled with Bio-Oss® (the experimental group); the other 2 extraction sockets, which were not treated, served as controls. Dental implants were inserted into the alveolar bone of the experimental group and the control group 3 months after insertion of the Bio-Oss®. The osteogenic activity in the bone around the implants was assessed by evaluating the histological morphology and estimating histomorphometric variables at 3 and 6 months after delayed implantation. After 3 months, Goldner's trichrome staining analysis showed that the rate of content between the bone and the implant and the mineralised area of bone around the implant were significantly higher in the experimental group (76%(9%) and 69.5% (9.6%), respectively) than those in the control group (56.1% (8.2%) and 52.8% (7.3%), respectively, p=0.003 and 0.000). However, the 2 groups did not differ significantly at 6 months. Fluorescence microscopy showed that the mean rates of mineralisation of the bony tissue around the implant in the experimental group at months 3 and 6 were 6.8 (0.4) μm and 8.4 (0.8) μm, respectively, which were significantly higher than those in the control group (p=0.000 and 0.03). These data indicate that putting Bio-Oss® into the extraction sockets can promote osseointegration after delayed implantation, and may be a promising option for clinical use., (Copyright © 2014 The British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Conservation of tropical forest biodiversity increasingly depends on its recovery following severe human disturbance. Our ability to measure recovery using current similarity indices suffers from two limitations: different sized individuals are treated as equal, and the indices are proportionate (a community with twice the individuals of every species as compared with the reference community would be assessed as identical). We define an alternative recovery index for trees - the Tanner index, as the mean of the quantitative Bray-Curtis similarity indices of species composition for stem density and for basal area. We used the new index to compare the original (pre-gap) and post-gap composition of five experimental gap plots (each 90-100 m(2)) and four control plots over 24-35 years in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. After 24-35 years, these small gaps surrounded by undisturbed forest had recovered 68% of the sum of per species stem density and 29% of the sum of per species basal area, a recovery index of 47%. Four endemic species were especially reduced in density and basal area. With the incorporation of basal area and stem density, our index reduces over-estimations of forest recovery obtained using existing similarity indices (by 24%-41%), and thus yields more accurate estimates of forest conservation status. Finally, our study indicates that the two kinds of comparisons: 1) over time between pre-gap and post-gap composition and 2) over space between gap plots and spatial controls (space-for-time substitution) yield broadly similar results, which supports the value of using space-for-time substitutions in studying forest recovery, at least in this tropical montane forest.

PUA composite particles were prepared by seeded surfactant-free emulsion polymerization, the polyurethane (PU) aqueous dispersions were used as seed particles. The studies on the UV spectra of PUA composite emulsions were carried out, the results showed that the maximum absorbance of n-pi* transition evidently shifted to red wavelength with increasing the concentration of the aqueous PU seed dispersions; the UV absorbance of PU dispersions decreased with increasing the amounts of the hydrophilic chain-extender and increased with increasing the NCO/OH molar ratios; when the hydrophilic chain-extender was 7.5%, the UV absorbance of PUA composite emulsion reached the lowest, the type of initiators showed less influence on the absorbance of UV spectra of PUA composite emulsions. Moreover, the UV spectra of PU dispersions and the diameters of PUA composite emulsion particles were nearly correlative.

Urinary levels of morphine and codeine were studied in two groups of people: Group A--urine samples of 76 subjects receiving three different medicinal preparations containing morphine or codeine. Group B--urine samples of 67 drug abusers detected at urinary mass screening. Distinct differences in these levels were observed. In Group A, UPPER 99% Confidence limits of morphine concentrations of 2.56 microgram/ml, 2.40 microgram/ml and 2.29 microgram/ml were reached after consumption of prescribed doses of Syrup Phensedyl, Tablet Codeine Co and Kaolin et Morphine mixture respectively. In Group B, the LOWER 99% Confidence limit of morphine concentration was 3 microgram/ml. In contrast, the codeine levels obtained for both groups were similar. The clear separation of the ranges of morphine values for the two groups shows that the urinary morphine level forms a reliable index for the differentiation between these two groups.

Urinary total morphine: total codeine ratios were studied in two groups of people. Group A consisted of 76 subjects receiving three different medicinal preparations containing morphine or codeine, while Group B consisted of 33 drug abusers detected at urinary mass screening. Distinct differences in these ratios were observed. In Group A, total morphine: codeine ratios of 1:2.6 and below were obtained for subjects consuming either Tablet Codeine Co or Syrup Phensedyl. Subjects consuming Kaolin et Morphine mixture did not excrete any codeine in the urine. In Group B, total morphine: total codeine ratios of 1.9:1 and above were obtained. In addition all subjects in Group B excreted both morphine and codeine. The clear separation of the morphine: codeine ratios makes this a possible index to differentiate between these groups.

Impaired hearing is an occupational hazard prevalent not only in industry but also in the armed forces. A survey to establish its prevalence in the SAF land forces was conducted. A sample of 2,564 subjects obtained through multistage proportional sampling was studied of whom 1,521 "normal" subjects were finally analysed. 403 subjects i.e. 26.5%, showed evidence of impaired hearing. The highest incidence was in the Artillery. The frequency most commonly affected was 6,000 Hz and the commonest presenting symptom was tinnitus. A Hearing Conservation Programme is described. Comparisons with the situations in Singapore's industries are made.
