We investigated the formation of nitrosamines from urine during electrochemical chlorination (EC) using dimensionally stable anodes. Short-term electrolysis (< 1 h) of urine at 25 mA cm -2 generated seven nitrosamines (0.1-7.4 µg L -1 ), where N-nitrosodimethylamine, N-nitrosomethylethylamine, and N-nitrosodiethylamine were predominant with concentrations ranging from 1.2 to 7.4 µg L -1 . Mechanistic studies showed that the formation kinetics of nitrosamines was influenced by urine aging and composition, with fresh urine generating the highest levels (0.9-5.8 µg L -1 ) compared with aged, centrifuged, or filtered urine (0.2-4.1 µg L -1 ). Concurrently, studies on urine pretreatment through filtration and centrifugation underscored the significance of nitrogenous metabolites (such as protein-like products and urinary amino acids) and particle-associated humic fractions in nitrosamine formation during EC of urine. This finding was confirmed through chromatographic and spectroscopic studies utilizing LCOCD, Raman spectra, and 3DEEM fluorescence spectra. Parametric studies demonstrated that the ultimate [nitrosamines] increased at a pH range of 4.5-6.2, and with increasing [bromide], [ammonium], and current density. Conversely, sulfate and carbonate ions inhibited nitrosamine formation. Moreover, the implications of EC in urine-containing source waters were evaluated. The results indicate that regardless of the urine source (individual volunteers, septic tank, swimming pool, untreated municipal wastewater), high levels of nitrosamines (0.1-17.6 µg L -1 ) were generated, surpassing the potable reuse guideline of 10 ng L -1 . Overall, this study provides insights to elucidate the mechanisms underlying nitrosamine formation and optimize the operating conditions. The surface oxidation of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has recently gained tremendous technological and fundamental interest owing to the multi-functional properties that the surface oxidized layer opens up. In particular, when integrated into other 2D materials in the form of van der Waals heterostructures, oxidized TMDs enable designer properties, including novel electronic states, engineered light-matter interactions, and exceptional-point singularities, among many others. Here, the evolving landscapes of the state-of-the-art surface engineering technologies that enable controlled oxidation of TMDs down to the monolayer-by-monolayer limit are reviewed. Next, the use of oxidized TMDs in van der Waals heterostructures for different electronic and photonic device platforms, materials growth processes, engineering concepts, and synthesizing new condensed matter phenomena is discussed. Finally, challenges and outlook for future impact of oxidized TMDs in driving rapid advancements across various application fronts is discussed., (© 2024 The Author(s). Artificial intelligence has been employed to simulate and optimize the performance of membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI), an emerging ion separation process. However, a real-time control for optimal MCDI operation has not been investigated yet. In this study, we aimed to develop a reinforcement learning (RL)-based control model and investigate the model to find an energy-efficient MCDI operation strategy. To fulfill the objectives, we established three long-short term memory models to predict applied voltage, outflow pH, and outflow electrical conductivity. Also, four RL agents were trained to minimize outflow concentration and energy consumption simultaneously. Consequently, actor-critic (A2C) and proximal policy optimization (PPO2) achieved the ion separation goal (<0.8 mS/cm) as they determined the electrical current and pump speed to be low. Particularly, A2C kept the parameters consistent in charging MCDI, which caused lower energy consumption (0.0128 kWh/m 3 ) than PPO2 (0.0363 kWh/m 3 ). To understand the decision-making process of A2C, the Shapley additive explanation based on the decision tree model estimated the influence of input parameters on the control parameters. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of RL-based controls in MCDI operations. This study investigated the occurrence, removal rate, and potential risks of 43 organic micropollutants (OMPs) in four municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Korea. Results from two-year intensive monitoring confirmed the presence of various OMPs in the influents, including pharmaceuticals such as acetaminophen (pain relief), caffeine (stimulants), cimetidine (H 2 -blockers), ibuprofen (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs- NSAIDs), metformin (antidiabetics), and naproxen (NSAIDs) with median concentrations of >1 μg/L. Some pharmaceuticals (carbamazepine-anticonvulsants, diclofenac-NSAIDs, propranolol-β-blockers), corrosion inhibitors (1H-benzotriazole-BTR, 4-methyl-1H-benzotriazole-4-TTR), and perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) were negligibly removed during WWTP treatment. The OMP concentrations in the influents and effluents were mostly lower in August than those of other months (p-value <0.05) possibly due to wastewater dilution by high precipitation or enhanced biodegradation under high-temperature conditions. The anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process (A2O) with a membrane bioreactor exhibited higher OMP removal than other processes, such as A2O with sedimentation or the conventional activated sludge process (p-value <0.05). Pesticides (DEET and atrazine), corrosion inhibitors (4-TTR and BTR), and metformin were selected as priority OMPs in toxicity-driven prioritization, whereas PFCs were determined as priority OMPs given their persistence and bioaccumulation properties. Prefiltration before chromatographic analysis is critical in the monitoring of environmental micropollutants (MPs). However, in an aqueous matrix, such monitoring often leads to out-of-specification results owing to the loss of MPs on syringe filters. Therefore, this study investigated the loss of seventy MPs on eight different syringe filters by employing Random Forest, a machine learning algorithm. The results indicate that the loss of MPs during filtration is filter specific, with glass microfiber and polytetrafluoroethylene filters being the most effective (<20%) compared with nylon (>90%) and others (regenerated-cellulose, polyethersulfone, polyvinylidene difluoride, cellulose acetate, and polypropylene). The Random Forest classifier showed outstanding performance (accuracy range 0.81-0.95) for determining whether the loss of MPs on filters exceeded 20%. Important factors in this classification were analyzed using the SHapley Additive exPlanation value and Kruskal-Wallis test. The results show that the physicochemical properties (LogKow/LogD, pKa, functional groups, and charges) of MPs are more important than the operational parameters (sample volume, filter pore size, diameter, and flow rate) in determining the loss of most MPs on syringe filters. However, other important factors such as the implications of the roles of pH for nylon and pre-rinsing for PTFE syringe filters should not be ignored. Although a series of past studies proved the potential usage of Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as photocatalysts, there remains a knowledge gap of the photocatalytic mechanism stemming from the challenge to separate the simultaneous sorption and photocatalytic degradation. Thus, this article aimed to suggest a novel approach by desorbing target molecules during photocatalysis to excavate the underlying mechanisms of sorption and photocatalytic degradation. In this study, two Fe-based MOFs, MIL-101(Fe) and MIL-101(Fe)-NH 2 , were selected to remove clofibric acid under visible light irradiation. Prior to photocatalysis, sorption mechanism was uncovered based on the sorption kinetic, isotherm, thermodynamic interpretation, and of its dependence on solution pH. The results inferred that the primary sorption mechanism was through the π-π interaction between the benzene ring of clofibric acid and the organic ligand of Fe-based MOFs. Based on these results, photocatalytic mechanism could be independently or jointly assessed during the photocatalytic degradation of clofibric acid. Subsequently, the application of the Tauc method and XPS spectra revealed that the bandgap structure of Fe-based MOFs had the potential to oxidize clofibric acid by producing ROS through the electron excitation upon visible-light illumination. 2D materials are burgeoning as promising candidates for investigating nonlinear optical effects due to high nonlinear susceptibilities, broadband optical response, and tunable nonlinearity. However, most 2D materials suffer from poor nonlinear conversion efficiencies, resulting from reduced light-matter interactions and lack of phase matching at atomic thicknesses. Herein, a new 2D nonlinear material, niobium oxide dibromide (NbOBr 2 ) is reported, featuring strong and anisotropic optical nonlinearities with scalable nonlinear intensity. Furthermore, Fabry-Pérot (F-P) microcavities are constructed by coupling NbOBr 2 with air holes in silicon. Remarkable enhancement factors of ≈630 times in second harmonic generation (SHG) and 210 times in third harmonic generation (THG) are achieved on cavity at the resonance wavelength of 1500 nm. Notably, the cavity enhancement effect exhibits strong anisotropic feature tunable with pump wavelength, owing to the robust optical birefringence of NbOBr 2 . The ratio of the enhancement factor along the b- and c-axis of NbOBr 2 reaches 2.43 and 5.27 for SHG and THG at 1500 nm pump, respectively, which leads to an extraordinarily high SHG anisotropic ratio of 17.82 and a 10° rotation of THG polarization. Acid leaching has been widely applied to treat contaminated soil, however, it contains several inorganic pollutants. The decommissioning of nuclear power plants introduces radioactive and soluble U(VI), a substance posing chemical toxicity to humans. Our investigation sought to ascertain the efficacy of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), an highly efficient adsorbent, in treating U(VI) in wastewater. The adsorption equilibrium of U(VI) by h-BN reached saturation within a mere 2 h. The adsorption of U(VI) by h-BN appears to be facilitated through electrostatic attraction, as evidenced by the observed impact of pH variations, acidic agents (i.e., HCl or H 2 SO 4 ), and the presence of background ions on the adsorption performance. A reusability test demonstrated the successful completion of five cycles of adsorption/desorption, relying on the surface characteristics of h-BN as influenced by solution pH. Based on the experimental variables of initial U(VI) concentration, exposure time, temperature, pH, and the presence of background ions/organic matter, a feature importance analysis using random forest (RF) was carried out to evaluate the correlation between performances and conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first attempt to conduct the adsorption of U(VI) generated from real contaminated soil by h-BN, followed by interpretation of the correlation between performance and conditions using RF. Manipulating the nanostructure of materials is critical for numerous applications in electronics, magnetics, and photonics. However, conventional methods such as lithography and laser writing require cleanroom facilities or leave residue. We describe an approach to creating atomically sharp line defects in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) at room temperature by direct optical phonon excitation with a mid-infrared pulsed laser from free space. We term this phenomenon "unzipping" to describe the rapid formation and growth of a crack tens of nanometers wide from a point within the laser-driven region. Formation of these features is attributed to the large atomic displacement and high local bond strain produced by strongly driving the crystal at a natural resonance. This process occurs only via coherent phonon excitation and is highly sensitive to the relative orientation of the crystal axes and the laser polarization. Its cleanliness, directionality, and sharpness enable applications such as polariton cavities, phonon-wave coupling, and in situ flake cleaving.

Mine operational safety is an important aspect of maintaining the operational continuity of a mining area. In this study, we used the InSAR time series to analyze land surface changes using the ICOPS (improved combined scatterers with optimized point scatters) method. This ICOPS method combines persistent scatterers (PS) with distributed scatterers (DS) to increase surface deformation analysis's spatial coverage and quality. One of the improvements of this study is the use of machine learning in postprocessing, based on convolutional neural networks, to increase the reliability of results. This study used data from the Sentinel-1 SAR C-band satellite during the 2016-2022 observation period at the Musan mine, North Korea. In the InSAR surface deformation time analysis, the maximum average rate of land subsidence was approximately > 15.00 cm per year, with total surface deformation of 170 cm and 70 cm for the eastern dumping area and the western dumping area, respectively. Analyzing the mechanism of land surface changes also involved evaluating the geological conditions in the Musan mining area. The removal of 53 emerging micropollutants (MPs), including 10 per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFASs), 25 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), 7 pesticides, 5 endocrine disrupters (EDCs), 3 nitrosamines, and 3 taste and odor compounds (T&Os), by chlorination, ozonation, and UV/H 2 O 2 treatment was examined in deionized water and surface waters used as the raw waters in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) in South Korea. The UV/H 2 O 2 treatment was effective in the removal of most MPs, whereas chlorination was selectively effective for 19 MPs, including EDCs (>70 %). MPs containing aromatic ring with electron-donating functional group, or primary and secondary amines were effectively removed by chlorination immediately upon reaction initiation. The removal of MPs by ozonation was generally lower than that of the other two processes at a low ozone dose (1 mg L -1 ), but higher than chlorination at a high ozone dose (3 mg L -1 ), particularly for 16 MPs, including T&Os. Compared in deionized water, the removals of MPs in the raw water samples were lower in all three processes. The regression models predicting the rate constants (k obs ) of 53 MPs showed good agreement between modeled and measured value for UV/H 2 O 2 treatment (R 2  = 0.948) and chlorination (R 2  = 0.973), despite using only dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and oxidant concentration as variables, whereas the ozonation model showed a variation (R 2  = 0.943). Context: During the COVID-19 pandemic, governments varied in their implementation of social distancing rules. Some governments were able to target their social distancing requirements toward specific segments of the population, whereas others had to resort to more indiscriminate applications. This article will argue that state capacity crucially affected the manner in which social distancing rules were applied., Methods: Using data from the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker, the author performed a series of ordered logistic regressions to examine whether state capacity increased the likelihood of more targeted applications of each social distancing rule., Findings: Given the same level of infectivity, more capable states were indeed more likely to resort to targeted applications of each social distancing restriction. Interestingly, the size of state capacity's effect varied by the type of restriction. State capacity had a stronger influence on face-covering requirements and private-gathering restrictions than it had on school closures, workplace closures, and stay-at-home orders., Conclusions: The way in which social distancing rules are applied is endogenous to state capacity. Waste wood, which has a large amount of cellulose fibers, should be transformed into useful materials for addressing environmental and resource problems. Thus, this study analyzed the application of waste wood as supercapacitor electrode material. First, cellulose fibers were extracted from waste wood and mixed with different contents of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) in water. Using a facile filtration method, cellulose papers with GnPs were prepared and converted into carbon papers through carbonization and then to porous activated carbon papers containing GnPs (ACP-GnP) through chemical activation processes. For the morphology of ACP-GnP, activated carbon fibers with abundant pores were formed. The increase in the amount of GnPs attached to the fiber surfaces decreased the number of pores. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas and specific capacitance of the ACP-GnP electrodes decreased with an increase in the GnP content. However, the galvanostatic charge-discharge curves of ACPs with higher GnP contents gradually changed into triangular and linear shapes, which are associated with the capacitive performance. For example, ACP with 15 wt% GnP had a low mass transfer resistance and high charge delivery of ions, resulting in the specific capacitance value of 267 Fg -1 owing to micropore and mesopore formation during the activation of carbon paper.

Polar crystals can be driven into collective oscillations by optical fields tuned to precise resonance frequencies. As the amplitude of the excited phonon modes increases, novel processes scaling non-linearly with the applied fields begin to contribute to the dynamics of the atomic system. Here we show two such optical nonlinearities that are induced and enhanced by the strong phonon resonance in the van der Waals crystal hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We predict and observe large sub-picosecond duration signals due to four-wave mixing (FWM) during resonant excitation. The resulting FWM signal allows for time-resolved observation of the crystal motion. In addition, we observe enhancements of third-harmonic generation with resonant pumping at the hBN transverse optical phonon. This study aimed to implement an extensive prediction model for the fate of micropollutants (MPs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Five WWTPs equipped with seven different biological treatment processes were monitored from 2020 to 2022 with three to four sampling events in each year, and 27 datasets for 20 MPs were collected. Among these datasets, 12 were used to investigate the behavior and fate of MPs in WWTPs in South Korea. Metformin, acetaminophen, caffeine, naproxen, and ibuprofen were the MPs with the highest influent concentrations (ranging from 3,933.3-187,637.0 ng L -1 ) at all WWTPs. More than 90% of MPs were removed by biological treatment processes in all WWTPs. The Kruskal-Wallis test verified that their efficacy did not differ statistically (p-value > 0.05). Meanwhile, to refine the performance of the prediction model, this study optimized the biodegradation rate constants (k bio ) of each MP according to the variation of seasonal water temperature. As a result, compared to the original prediction model, the mean difference between the actual data and predicted results (MEAN) decreased by 6.77%, while the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) increased by 0.226. The final MEAN and NSE for the refined prediction model were calculated to be 5.09% and 0.964, respectively. The prediction model made accurate predictions, even for MPs exhibiting behaviors different from other cases, such as estriol and atrazine. Plasmon polaritons in van der Waals materials hold promise for various photonics applications 1-4 . The deterministic imprinting of spatial patterns of high carrier density in plasmonic cavities and nanoscale circuitry can enable the realization of advanced nonlinear nanophotonic 5 and strong light-matter interaction platforms 6 . Here we demonstrate an oxidation-activated charge transfer strategy to program ambipolar low-loss graphene plasmonic structures. By covering graphene with transition-metal dichalcogenides and subsequently oxidizing the transition-metal dichalcogenides into transition-metal oxides, we activate charge transfer rooted in the dissimilar work functions between transition-metal oxides and graphene. Nano-infrared imaging reveals ambipolar low-loss plasmon polaritons at the transition-metal-oxide/graphene interfaces. Further, by inserting dielectric van der Waals spacers, we can precisely control the electron and hole densities induced by oxidation-activated charge transfer and achieve plasmons with a near-intrinsic quality factor. Using this strategy, we imprint plasmonic cavities with laterally abrupt doping profiles with nanoscale precision and demonstrate plasmonic whispering-gallery resonators based on suspended graphene encapsulated in transition-metal oxides., (© 2023. Nanobubble (NB) generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially hydroxyl radical ( · OH), has been controversial. In this work, we extensively characterize NBs in solution, with a focus on ROS generation (as · OH), through a number of methods including degradation of · OH-specific target compounds, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and a fluorescence-based indicator. Generated NBs exhibit consistent physical characteristics (size, surface potential, and concentration) when compared with previous studies. For conditions described, which are considered as high O 2 NB concentrations, no degradation of benzoic acid (BA), a well-studied · OH scavenger, was observed in the presence of NBs (over 24 h) and no EPR signal for · OH was detected. While a positive fluorescence response was measured when using a fluorescence probe for · OH, aminophenyl fluorescein (APF), we provide an alternate explanation for the result. Gas/liquid interfacial characterization indicates that the surface of a NB is proton-rich and capable of inducing acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of APF, which results in a false (positive) fluorescence response. We investigate heterostructures composed of monolayer WSe 2 stacked on α-RuCl 3 using a combination of Terahertz (THz) and infrared (IR) nanospectroscopy and imaging, scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), and photoluminescence (PL). Our observations reveal itinerant carriers in the heterostructure prompted by charge transfer across the WSe 2 /α-RuCl 3 interface. Local STS measurements show the Fermi level is shifted to the valence band edge of WSe 2 which is consistent with p-type doping and verified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We observe prominent resonances in near-IR nano-optical and PL spectra, which are associated with the A-exciton of WSe 2 . We identify a concomitant, near total, quenching of the A-exciton resonance in the WSe 2 /α-RuCl 3 heterostructure. Our nano-optical measurements show that the charge-transfer doping vanishes while excitonic resonances exhibit near-total recovery in "nanobubbles", where WSe 2 and α-RuCl 3 are separated by nanometer distances. Our broadband nanoinfrared inquiry elucidates local electrodynamics of excitons and an electron-hole plasma in the WSe 2 /α-RuCl 3 system.

Infrared machine vision system for object perception and recognition is becoming increasingly important in the Internet of Things era. However, the current system suffers from bulkiness and inefficiency as compared to the human retina with the intelligent and compact neural architecture. Here, we present a retina-inspired mid-infrared (MIR) optoelectronic device based on a two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure for simultaneous data perception and encoding. A single device can perceive the illumination intensity of a MIR stimulus signal, while encoding the intensity into a spike train based on a rate encoding algorithm for subsequent neuromorphic computing with the assistance of an all-optical excitation mechanism, a stochastic near-infrared (NIR) sampling terminal. The device features wide dynamic working range, high encoding precision, and flexible adaption ability to the MIR intensity. Background: Owing to limited experience with the new vaccine platforms, discussion of vaccine safety is inevitable. However, media coverage of adverse events of special interest could influence the vaccination rate; thus, evaluating the outcomes of adverse events of special interest influencing vaccine administration is crucial., Methods: We conducted regression discontinuity in time analysis to calculate the local average treatment effect (LATE) using datasets from Our World in Data and Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering. Discontinuities were observed for all three types of vaccines in the United States. The June 23rd meeting of the ACIP (mRNA vaccines and myocarditis) did not convene any discontinuities. Furthermore, there was no significant drop in the weekly average vaccination rates in Europe following the European Medicines Agency (EMA) statement on April 7th. Conversely, there was a significant drop in the first-dose vaccination rates in the United Kingdom related to the EMA report. Background: Backward walking is considered as a newly rising method used to enhance gait abilities, but evidence remains unclear., Objective: To identify whether backward walking with functional electrical stimulation (FES) triggered by a foot switch on the rectus femoris and tibialis anterior could be effective in improving gait parameters of stroke survivors., Methods: This was a cross-sectional study that included fourteen subjects with chronic stroke. Three walking conditions were performed at random: backward walking with FES attached onto the rectus femoris and tibialis anterior (RF+TA), backward walking with FES attached onto the tibialis anterior (TA only), and without electrical intervention (non-FES). The Zebris was used to assess the spatiotemporal gait parameters. Each condition was measured three times and the average value was used for analysis., Results: Results showed significant increases in gait speed, cadence, step length, mid-stance percentage, maximal force in the affected midfoot (p < 0.05), and significant decreases in the double stance phase in the RF+TA condition compared to the TA only and the non-FES conditions (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Functional electrical stimulation to the rectus femoris and tibialis anterior during backward walking could be a clinically effective method to improve gait ability of stroke survivors.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials-based photodetectors in the infrared range hold the key to enabling a wide range of optoelectronics applications including infrared imaging and optical communications. While there exist 2D materials with a narrow bandgap sensitive to infrared photons, a two-photon absorption (TPA) process can also enable infrared photodetection in well-established 2D materials with large bandgaps such as WSe 2 and MoS 2 . However, most of the TPA photodetectors suffer from low responsivity, preventing this method from being widely adopted for infrared photodetection. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate 2D materials-based TPA avalanche photodiodes achieving an ultrahigh responsivity. The WSe 2 /MoS 2 heterostructure absorbs infrared photons with an energy smaller than the material bandgaps via a low-efficiency TPA process. The significant avalanche effect with a gain of ∼1300 improves the responsivity, resulting in the record-high responsivity of 88 μA/W. We believe that this work paves the way toward building practical and high-efficiency 2D materials-based infrared photodetectors.

Background: Surgical treatment can be considered for patients with undifferentiated arthritis (UA) limited to the elbow joint. The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical outcomes of arthroscopic synovectomy., Methods: Nineteen patients who underwent arthroscopic synovectomy for chronic UA of the elbow between 2006 and 2019 were enrolled in this study. One patient was excluded because of evidence of tuberculosis in the biopsy. Chronic UA of the elbow was defined as (1) localized synovitis diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging, (2) no specific cause, and (3) no response to conservative treatment for >3 months. We compared baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes between the remission and disease progression groups., Results: Postoperatively, synovitis was controlled in 13 patients. In 5 patients, the symptoms disappeared after surgery without any medical treatment. Four patients discontinued disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. Nine patients were classified as in remission. The disease progression group had a longer symptom duration, elevated rheumatoid markers, and higher Larsen grading. However, the difference was not statistically significant., Conclusions: Arthroscopic synovectomy achieved remission in approximately 47% of patients with chronic UA of the elbow. Metals are canonical plasmonic media at infrared and optical wavelengths, allowing one to guide and manipulate light at the nanoscale. A special form of optical waveguiding is afforded by highly anisotropic crystals revealing the opposite signs of the dielectric functions along orthogonal directions. These media are classified as hyperbolic and include crystalline insulators, semiconductors, and artificial metamaterials. Layered anisotropic metals are also anticipated to support hyperbolic waveguiding. However, this behavior remains elusive, primarily because interband losses arrest the propagation of infrared modes. Here, we report on the observation of propagating hyperbolic waves in a prototypical layered nodal-line semimetal ZrSiSe. The observed waveguiding originates from polaritonic hybridization between near-infrared light and nodal-line plasmons. Unique nodal electronic structures simultaneously suppress interband loss and boost the plasmonic response, ultimately enabling the propagation of infrared modes through the bulk of the crystal.

Deep convolutional networks have been developed to detect prohibited items for automated inspection of X-ray screening systems in the transport security system. To our knowledge, the existing frameworks were developed to recognize threats using only baggage security X-ray scans. Therefore, the detection accuracy in other domains of security X-ray scans, such as cargo X-ray scans, cannot be ensured. We propose an object detection method for efficiently detecting contraband items in both cargo and baggage for X-ray security scans. The proposed network, MFA-net, consists of three plug-and-play modules, including the multiscale dilated convolutional module, fusion feature pyramid network, and auxiliary point detection head. First, the multiscale dilated convolutional module converts the standard convolution of the detector backbone to a conditional convolution by aggregating the features from multiple dilated convolutions using dynamic feature selection to overcome the object-scale variant issue. Second, the fusion feature pyramid network combines the proposed attention and fusion modules to enhance multiscale object recognition and alleviate the object and occlusion problem. Third, the auxiliary point detection head adopts an auxiliary head to predict the new keypoints of the bounding box to emphasize the localizability without requiring further ground-truth information. We tested the performance of the MFA-net on two large-scale X-ray security image datasets from different domains: a Security Inspection X-ray (SIXray) dataset in the baggage domain and our dataset, named CargoX, in the cargo domain. Moreover, MFA-net outperformed state-of-the-art object detectors in both domains. Specific features of the human body, such as fingerprint, iris, and face, are extensively used in biometric authentication. Conversely, the internal structure and material features of the body have not been explored extensively in biometrics. Bioacoustics technology is suitable for extracting information about the internal structure and biological and material characteristics of the human body. Herein, we report a biometric authentication method that enables multichannel bioacoustic signal acquisition with a systematic approach to study the effects of selectively distilled frequency features, increasing the number of sensing channels with respect to multiple fingers. The accuracy of identity recognition according to the number of sensing channels and the number of selectively chosen frequency features was evaluated using exhaustive combination searches and forward-feature selection. The technique was applied to test the accuracy of machine learning classification using 5,232 datasets from 54 subjects. By optimizing the scanning frequency and sensing channels, our method achieved an accuracy of 99.62%, which is comparable to existing biometric methods. Overall, the proposed biometric method not only provides an unbreakable, inviolable biometric but also can be applied anywhere in the body and can substantially broaden the use of biometrics by enabling continuous identity recognition on various body parts for biometric identity authentication.

Mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) can be maintained in a pluripotent state under R2i culture conditions that inhibit the TGF-β and ERK signaling pathways. BMP4 is another member of the TGF-β family that plays a crucial role in maintaining the pluripotency state of mESCs. It has been reported that inhibition of BMP4 caused the death of R2i-grown cells. In this study, we used the loss-of-function approach to investigate the role of BMP4 signaling in mESC self-renewal. Inhibition of this pathway with Noggin and dorsomorphin, two bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) antagonists, elicited a quick death of the R2i-grown cells. We showed that the canonical pathway of BMP4 (BMP/SMAD) was dispensable for self-renewal and maintaining pluripotency of these cells. Transcriptome analysis of the BMPi-treated cells revealed that the p53 signaling and two adhesion (AD) and apoptotic mitochondrial change (MT) pathways could be involved in the cell death of the BMPi-treated cells. According to our results, inhibition of BMP4 signaling caused a decrease in cell adhesion and ECM detachment, which triggered anoikis in the R2i-grown cells. The hurdle of fabricating asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) devices using a faradic cathode and a double layer anode is challenging due to the required large amount of active mass of anodic material compared to that of the cathodic material during mass balancing due to the large difference in capacitance values of the two electrodes. Here, the problem is addressed by engineering a negative electrode that furnishes an ultrahigh capacitance. An in situ developed metal-organic framework (MOF)-based thermal treatment is adopted to grow highly porous N-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) containing submerged Co nanoparticles over nano-fibrillated electrospun hollow carbon nanofibers (HCNFs). The optimized CNT@HCNF-1.5 furnishes an ultrahigh capacitance approaching 712 F g -1 with excellent rate capability. The capacitance reported from this work is the highest for any carbonaceous material reported to date. The CNT@HCNF-1.5 is further used to fabricate symmetric supercapacitors (SSCs), as well as ASC devices. Remarkably, both the SSC and ASC devices furnish incredible performances in all aspects of SCs, such as a high energy density, long cycle life, and high rate capability, displaying decent practical applicability. The development of multicomponent materials is the most efficient and successful way for creating advanced multifunctional catalysts. Herein, the bimetal FeCo nanoarrays enclosed N-CNTs have a high surface on carbon cloth support, which promotes efficient electron transport and prevents nanoparticle aggregation. Taking advantage of the high-level use of active material and fast charge transfer, the developed electrocatalyst exhibits excellent multifunctional electrocatalyst such as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The N-CNTs@MOF FeCo nanoarrays @CC exhibit higher activity than reference catalysts including MOF FeCo nanoarrays@CC, FeCo nanoarrays@CC, and CC. Interestingly, the synthesized multifunctional catalyst, which serves as the air electrode in zinc-air batteries with liquid electrolytes as well as solid-state gel electrolytes possesses outstanding charging-discharge performance and long service life. Dementia is a disease in which memory, thought, and behavior-related disorders progress gradually due to brain damage caused by injury or disease. It is mainly caused by Alzheimer's disease or vascular dementia and several other risk factors, including genetic factors. It is difficult to treat as its incidence continues to increase worldwide. Many studies have been performed concerning the treatment of this condition. Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) and phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) are attracting attention as pharmacological treatments to improve the symptoms. This review discusses how ROCK and PDE-5 affect Alzheimer's disease, vascular restructuring, and exacerbation of neuroinflammation, and how their inhibition helps improve cognitive function. In addition, the results of the animal behavior analysis experiments utilizing the Morris water maze were compared through meta-analysis to analyze the effects of ROCK inhibitors and PDE-5 inhibitors on cognitive function. According to the selection criteria, 997 publications on ROCK and 1772 publications on PDE-5 were screened, and conclusions were drawn through meta-analysis. Both inhibitors showed good improvement in cognitive function tests, and what is expected of the synergy effect of the two drugs was confirmed in this review.

The structural design of transition metal-based electrode materials with gigantic energy storage capabilities is a crucial task. In this work, we report an assembly of thin layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets arrayed throughout the luminal and abluminal parts of polypyrrole tunnels fastened onto both sides of a carbon cloth as a battery-type energy storage system. Electron microscopy images reveal that the resulting electrode (NiCo-LDH@H-PPy@CC, where H-PPy@CC represents carbon cloth-supported hollow polypyrrole fibers) is constructed by combining luminal and abluminal NiCo-LDH nanosheets onto a long polypyrrole tunnel on a carbon cloth. The primary sample shows an excellent specific capacity of 149.16 mAh g -1 at 1.0 mA cm -2 , a remarkable rate capability of 80.45%, and comprehensive cyclic stability (93.4%). The improved performance is mainly attributed to the strategic organization of the electrode materials with superior Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and conductivity. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor device assembled with NiCo-LDH@H-PPy@CC and vanadium phosphate-incorporated carbon nanofiber (VPO@CNFs900) electrodes contributes a specific energy density of 32.42 Wh kg -1 at 3 mA cm -2 with a specific power density of 359.16 W kg -1 . When the current density is increased by 6-fold, the specific power density reaches 1999.89 W kg -1 at a specific energy density of 20.06 Wh kg -1 . This is a simple, cost-effective, and convenient synthetic strategy for the synthesis of porous nanosheet arrays assimilated into hollow fiber architectures, which can illuminate the ideal approach for the fabrication of novel materials with an immense potential for energy storage.

Kimchi made from small-type (Altari) radishes grown in late spring is more pungent than that made from autumn-grown Altari radishes, which poses a major challenge in the kimchi industry. The mechanism through which the pungency of Altari radish changes seasonally has not been intensively investigated. In this study, three small-type radish cultivars with different pungency levels were cultivated in spring and autumn to identify the factors affecting the seasonal-dependent pungency of small-type radishes. The contents of pungency-related metabolite glucoraphasatin and other polar metabolites were analyzed. Although a previous study reported that the glucoraphasatin concentration affects the pungency of radish, in the current study, the concentration of neither glucoraphasatin nor its hydrolysis product (raphasatin) could fully explain the change in the pungency associated with radish cultivars grown in the two seasons. The change in the pungency of radish by season may be explained by the ratio of raphasatin content to total sweetness of sugars. In addition, the polar metabolites that differ with season were analyzed to identify seasonal biomarkers and understand the seasonal changed physio-biochemistry.

Chiral Weyl fermions with linear energy-momentum dispersion in the bulk accompanied by Fermi-arc states on the surfaces prompt a host of enticing optical effects. While new Weyl semimetal materials keep emerging, the available optical probes are limited. In particular, isolating bulk and surface electrodynamics in Weyl conductors remains a challenge. We devised an approach to the problem based on near-field photocurrent imaging at the nanoscale and applied this technique to a prototypical Weyl semimetal TaIrTe 4 As a first step, we visualized nano-photocurrent patterns in real space and demonstrated their connection to bulk nonlinear conductivity tensors through extensive modeling augmented with density functional theory calculations. Notably, our nanoscale probe gives access to not only the in-plane but also the out-of-plane electric fields so that it is feasible to interrogate all allowed nonlinear tensors including those that remained dormant in conventional far-field optics. Surface- and bulk-related nonlinear contributions are distinguished through their "symmetry fingerprints" in the photocurrent maps. Robust photocurrents also appear at mirror-symmetry breaking edges of TaIrTe 4 single crystals that we assign to nonlinear conductivity tensors forbidden in the bulk. Purpose: Microbiota manipulation through selected probiotics may be a promising tool to prevent cancer development as well as onset, to improve clinical efficacy for cancer treatments. The purpose of this study was to evaluate change in microbiota composition after-probiotics supplementation and assessed the efficacy of probiotics in improving quality of life (QOL) in postoperative cancer patients., Methods: Stool samples were collected from 30 cancer patients from February to October 2020 before (group I) and after (group II) 8 weeks of probiotics supplementation. We performed 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing to evaluate differences in gut microbiota between groups by comparing gut microbiota diversity, overall composition, and taxonomic signature abundance. The health-related QOL was evaluated through the EORTC Quality of life Questionnaire Core 30 questionnaire., Results: Statistically significant differences were noted in group II; increase of Shannon and Simpson index (P = 0.004 and P = 0.001), decrease of Bacteroidetes and Fusobacteria at the phylum level (P = 0.032 and P = 0.014, retrospectively), increased of beneficial bacteria such as Weissella (0.096% vs. 0.361%, P < 0.004), Lactococcus (0.023% vs. 0.16%, P < 0.001), and Catenibacterium (0.0% vs. 0.005%, P < 0.042) at the genus level. There was a significant improvement in sleep disturbance (P = 0.039) in group II., Conclusion: Gut microbiota in cancer patients can be manipulated by specific probiotic strains, result in an altered microbiota. Iron overload in the brain, defined as excess stores of iron, is known to be associated with neurological disorders. In neurodegeneration accompanied by brain iron accumulation, we reported a specific point mutation, c.974-1G>A in WD Repeat Domain 45 ( WDR45 ), showing iron accumulation in the brain, and autophagy defects in the fibroblasts. In this study, we investigated whether fibroblasts with mutated WDR45 accumulated iron, and other effects on cellular organelles. We first identified the main location of iron accumulation in the mutant fibroblasts and then investigated the effects of this accumulation on cellular organelles, including lipid droplets, mitochondria and lysosomes. Ultrastructure analysis using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and confocal microscopy showed structural changes in the organelles. Increased numbers of lipid droplets, fragmented mitochondria and increased numbers of lysosomal vesicles with functional disorder due to WDR45 deficiency were observed. Based on correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) findings, most of the iron accumulation was noted in the lysosomal vesicles. These changes were associated with defects in autophagy and defective protein and organelle turnover. Gene expression profiling analysis also showed remarkable changes in lipid metabolism, mitochondrial function, and autophagy-related genes. These data suggested that functional and structural changes resulted in impaired lipid metabolism, mitochondrial disorder, and unbalanced autophagy fluxes, caused by iron overload.

The distinctive optical and electronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) make it a promising photocatalyst and photothermal agent in aqueous applications. In terms of environmental stability, MoS 2 has been considered insoluble, but 2D MoS 2 nanosheets can be susceptible to dissolution, owing to their large surface areas and highly accessible reactive sites, including defects at the basal plane and edge sites. Under light illumination, the dissolution of 2D MoS 2 nanosheets can be further accelerated by their photochemical reactivity. To elucidate MoS 2 reactivity in the environment, here we investigated the thickness-dependent dissolution of MoS 2 under illumination. To synthesize nanoscale thicknesses of MoS 2 , we exfoliated bulk MoS 2 by ultrasonication and controlled the layer thickness by iterative cascade centrifugation, producing MoS 2 nanosheets averaging either ∼18 nm or ∼46 nm thick, depending on the centrifugation rate. Under simulated sunlight, MoS 2 dissolution was accelerated, the Mo 6+ composition increased, and the solution pH decreased compared to those in the dark. These results suggest that light exposure promotes the oxidation of MoS 2 , causing faster dissolution. Importantly, 18 nm thick MoS 2 exhibited faster dissolution than either 46 nm or bulk MoS 2 , driven by the superoxide radical (O 2 •- ) generation promoted by its relative thinness. These findings highlight the important role of the thickness-dependent photochemistry of MoS 2 nanosheets in their dissolution, which is directly linked to their environmental behavior and stability.

Abstract: This study aimed to know the distance of the cervicovaginal junction (CVJ) to the anterior peritoneal reflection (APR) as measured in surgical specimens, and assess the distance between the CVJ and APR to ensure safe anterior colpotomy for vaginal hysterectomy among Korean women.Patients who underwent vaginal hysterectomy were included in the analysis. According to the presence of pelvic organ prolapse or menopausal status, the distance from the CVJ to the APR was assessed preoperatively through transvaginal ultrasonography (TV-US), as well as intraoperatively using surgical specimens. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to determine the reliability between 2 measurements.In total, 171 patients were included. The median distance from the CVJ to the APR measured on TV-US was 19.8 (3.3-41.3) mm. Meanwhile, the median distance from the CVJ to the APR measured using the surgical specimen was 26.0 (12.0-55.0) mm. The intraclass correlation coefficient for the absolute agreement between 2 measurements was 0.353 (95% confidence interval: 0.002-0.570; P < .001), which is indicative of poor reliability. The median distance from the CVJ to the APR measured using the surgical specimen did not differ significantly between the 2 groups according to pelvic organ prolapse (26.0 [12.0-55.0] vs 27.5 [17.0-55.0] mm, P = .076] and menopausal status (27.0 [15.0-55.0] vs 26.0 [12.0-55.0] mm, P = .237).TV-US does not an accurately measure the dissection plane length from the CVJ to the APR during anterior colpotomy. Background: Considering the adverse effects of opioids, it is essential to minimize their consumption for postoperative pain control. Studies have reported the opioid sparing effects of pregabalin, with conflicting results. Evidence for administering pregabalin in a multimodal regimen after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair surgery is limited., Methods: A total of 64 patients who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair were enrolled in the cohort, and their data were retrospectively analyzed to evaluate the ability of pregabalin for postoperative analgesia and opioid sparing. The pregabalin group (n = 32) received additional pregabalin 75 mg for 2 weeks from the day before the surgery with the standard pain medications; in contrast, the control group (n = 32) was prescribed the standard pain medications alone. The total volume of patient-controlled anesthesia, doses of oral oxycodone and intravenous morphine as rescue analgesics, number of adverse events, and patient satisfaction based on the numeric rating scale (0-10) were assessed. Further, we used the visual analog scale for evaluating pain and function for 6 months in each group., Results: Total patient-controlled anesthesia volume, number of patient-controlled anesthesia attempts on the day of surgery, and total oral oxycodone consumption were significantly lower in the pregabalin group. Visual analog scale scores for pain and function showed no significant differences. Although the total number of adverse effects (nausea, vomiting, dizziness, dry mouth, urinary retention, itching sense, or constipation) was higher in the pregabalin group than in the control group, the difference was not statistically significant., Conclusion: Our multimodal regimen with pregabalin significantly reduced opioid consumption with similar adverse effects. However, there was no significant difference in the pain score. Rose hips are the fruits of the beach rose ( Rosa rugosa ). To determine the optimal harvest time and to obtain the maximum functional compounds, rose hips at various stages of ripeness (immature, early, mid, and late) were harvested, and the flesh tissue and seeds were separated. The rose hip flesh showed the highest total phenolic content at the mid-ripeness stage (8.45 ± 0.62 mg/g gallic acid equivalent concentration (dry weight)). The early-, mid-, and late-ripeness stages of rose hip flesh did not show significantly different 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl antioxidant capacities. The elastase inhibitory activity of the 95% ethanol extract from the rose hip seeds was highest at the mid-ripeness stage; however, the elastase inhibitory activity of the rose hip tissue was not significantly different from that of the seeds. Pathway analysis using MetaboAnalyst showed that sucrose, fructose, and glucose gradually increased as the fruit ripened. Ursolic acid was detected in the seeds but not in the flesh. Of the fatty acids, linoleic acid concentrations were highest in rose hip seeds, followed by linolenic acid, oleic acid, and palmitic acid. Fatty acids and ursolic acid might be the active compounds responsible for elastase inhibitory activity and can be utilized as a functional cosmetic material.

Objectives: To analyze the oncologic outcomes of long-term fertility-sparing treatment (FST) in patients with early-stage endometrial cancer (EC) and to determine the optimal duration of FST that would not hamper survival outcomes., Methods: Patients undergoing FST for presumed stage IA, grade 1 EC between 2005 and 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Oncologic outcomes were compared between the group with ≤6 months of FST and the group with >6 months of FST. Segmented regression analysis was used to estimate the dynamic changes in cumulative complete response (CR) rates according to FST duration., Results: A total of 122 patients received oral progestin, with concurrent levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device use in 108 (88.5%) and 105 (86.1%) achieved CR with a median time to achieve CR of 10 (3-42) months. Of the patients not achieving CR at 6 months of FST, 95.1% (78/82) continued further FST. The overall CR rate (88.9% [32/36] vs. 84.9% [73/86], P = 0.436] was not significantly different between the groups with ≤6 and > 6 months of FST. The changes in cumulative CR rates were significantly different between the two segments divided by 15 months from the initial FST (P = 0.0015, segmented regression analysis). The overall progressive disease (PD) rate was 3.3% (4/122), and PD was first detected during 9-12 months of FST., Conclusion: Patients not achieving CR and not showing PD at 6 months of FST could continue further FST. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of aroma foot baths on stress and sleep in terminally ill cancer patients., Methods: We performed a non-randomized intervention-control study with 30 terminal cancer patients who were admitted to a palliative care unit. Participants responded to questionnaires on stress and sleep before and after a 5-day interval. The intervention group received a daily aroma foot bath for 5 days. We performed multivariate regression analysis to examine the changes in outcomes on stress and sleep for the intervention group compared to the control group., Results: The differences in baseline characteristics between groups, excluding subjective economic status and general weakness, did not show statistical significance. In contrast to the control group, the intervention group showed a statistically significant change in physical stress and psychological stress levels, but significant changes were not observed in quality of sleep. The fabrication of an economic and efficient multifunctional advanced nanomaterial with a rational composition and configuration by a facile methodology is a crucial challenge. Herein, we are the first to report the growth of Co nanoparticle-integrated nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) on porous carbon nanofibers by simply heating in the situ-developed metal-organic framework (MOF)-based electrospun nanofibrous membrane with no need for an external supply of any additional precursors and reducing gases. The long and entangled N-CNTs originating from highly porous and graphitic carbon nanofibers offer good flexibility, large surface area, high porosity, high conductivity, the homogeneous incorporation of heteroatoms and metallic constituents, and an abundant exposure of active nanocatalytic sites. The as-developed nanoassembly demonstrates attractive characteristics for electrocatalytic hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions and electrochemical energy storage. This strategy of integrating the essence of an MOF with electrospinning offers a new, direct, and cost-effective approach for making N-doped CNT-based multifunctional membranes.

Current biometrics rely on images obtained from the structural information of physiological characteristics, which is inherently a fatal problem of being vulnerable to spoofing. Here, we studied personal identification using the frequency-domain information based on human body vibration. We developed a bioacoustic frequency spectroscopy system and applied it to the fingers to obtain information on the anatomy, biomechanics, and biomaterial properties of the tissues. As a result, modulated microvibrations propagated through our body could capture a unique spectral trait of a person and the biomechanical transfer characteristics persisted for two months and resulted in 97.16% accuracy of identity authentication in 41 subjects. Ultimately, our method not only eliminates the practical means of creating fake copies of the relevant characteristics but also provides reliable features.

The effects of CO 2 pretreatment before cold storage on tomato quality were investigated using physicochemical and transcriptome changes. Harvested tomatoes were treated with 30% or 60% CO 2 for 3 h before storage at 4 °C for 14 d (cold storage), followed by transfer to 20 °C for 8 d (ambient conditions). The CO 2 -treated fruits were firmer with a better appearance than untreated fruits, even after being transferred from 4 °C storage to 20 °C for 8 d. CO 2 pretreatment coupled with cold storage synergistically delayed tomato ripening by reducing respiration and lowering lycopene production. The tomatoes treated with 30% and 60% CO 2 had fewer pits than untreated fruits after cold storage, even after being transferred to ambient conditions. Moreover, the 60% CO 2 treatment significantly suppressed the decay rate. Transcriptome and metabolome functional enrichment analyses commonly showed the involvement of CO 2 -responsive genes or metabolites in sucrose and starch metabolism, as well as biosynthesis of secondary metabolites-in particular, glycolysis reduction. The most frequently detected domain was the ethylene-responsive factor. These results indicate that altered ethylene biosynthesis and ethylene signaling, via ethylene-responsive transcription factors and respiration-related pathways, appear to control CO 2 -induced fruit quality.

Osmotic and hydraulic pressures are both indispensable for operating membrane-based desalting processes, such as forward osmosis (FO), pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO), and reverse osmosis (RO). However, a clear relation between these driving pressures has not thus far been identified; hence, the effect of change in driving pressures on systems has not yet been sufficiently analyzed. In this context, this study formulates an actual mathematical relation between the driving pressures of membrane-based desalting processes by taking into consideration the presence of energy loss in each driving pressure. To do so, this study defines the pseudo-driving pressures representing the water transport direction of a system and the similarity coefficients that quantify the energy conservation rule. Consequently, this study finds three other theoretical constraints that are required to operate membrane-based desalting processes. Furthermore, along with the features of the similarity coefficients, this study diagnoses the commercial advantage of RO over FO/PRO and suggests desirable optimization sequences applicable to each process. Since this study provides researchers with guidelines regarding optimization sequences between membrane parameters and operational parameters for membrane-based desalting processes, it is expected that detailed optimization strategies for the processes could be established.
