Abstract

The E36 experiment has been carried out at J-PARC to search for Lepton Universality violation in the kaon two body decays K l2 . A precise value of the decay width ratio RK=Γ(Ke2) =Γ(Kμ2) will be extracted and compared with the standard model (SM) value. Any sizable difference would suggest new physics beyond the SM. Simultaneously, E36 is sensitive to light U(1) gauge bosons which could be associated with dark matter or explain established muon-related anomalies (g-2). The experiment as well as the status of the analysis will be presented.

Abstract

The observation of beam spin asymmetries in two-pion production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off an unpolarized proton target is reported for the first time. The data presented here were taken in the fall of 2018 with the CLAS12 spectrometer using a 10.6 GeV longitudinally spin-polarized electron beam delivered by CEBAF at JLab. The measured asymmetries provide the first observation of a signal that can be used to extract the PDF $e(x)$ in a collinear framework and the helicity-dependent two-pion fragmentation function $G_1^\perp$.

Abstract

We have measured beam-spin asymmetries to extract the \ud sin\ud ϕ\ud moment \ud A\ud sin\ud ϕ\ud L\ud U\ud from the hard exclusive \ud →\ud e\ud p\ud →\ud e\ud ′\ud n\ud π\ud +\ud reaction above the resonance region, for the first time with nearly full coverage from forward to backward angles in the center of mass. The \ud A\ud sin\ud ϕ\ud L\ud U\ud moment has been measured up to \ud 6.6\ud \ud \ud GeV\ud 2\ud in \ud −\ud t\ud , covering the kinematic regimes of generalized parton distributions (GPD) and baryon-to-meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDA) at the same time. The experimental results in very forward kinematics demonstrate the sensitivity to chiral-odd and chiral-even GPDs. In very backward kinematics where the TDA framework is applicable, we found \ud A\ud sin\ud ϕ\ud L\ud U\ud to be negative, while a sign change was observed near 90° in the center of mass. The unique results presented in this Letter will provide critical constraints to establish reaction mechanisms that can help to further develop the GPD and TDA frameworks.

Abstract

We report a measurement of a beam–target double-polarisation observable (E) for the γ→n→(p)→K+Σ−(p) reaction. The data were obtained impinging the circularly-polarised energy-tagged photon beam of Hall B at Jefferson Lab on a longitudinally-polarised frozen-spin hydrogen deuteride (HD) nuclear target. The E observable for an effective neutron target was determined for centre-of-mass energies 1.70≤W≤2.30 GeV, with reaction products detected over a wide angular acceptance by the CLAS spectrometer. These new double-polarisation data give unique constraints on the strange decays of excited neutron states. Inclusion of the new data within the Bonn-Gatchina theoretical model results in significant changes for the extracted photocouplings of a number of established nucleon resonances. Possible improvements in the PWA description of the experimental data with additional “missing” resonance states, including the N(2120)3/2− resonance, are also quantified.

Abstract

International audience; The CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer for operation at 12 GeV beam energy (CLAS12) in Hall B at Jefferson Laboratory is used to study electro-induced nuclear and hadronic reactions. This spectrometer provides efficient detection of charged and neutral particles over a large fraction of the full solid angle. CLAS12 has been part of the energy-doubling project of Jefferson Lab’s Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility, funded by the United States Department of Energy. An international collaboration of 48 institutions contributed to the design and construction of detector hardware, developed the software packages for the simulation of complex event patterns, and commissioned the detector systems. CLAS12 is based on a dual-magnet system with a superconducting torus magnet that provides a largely azimuthal field distribution that covers the forward polar angle range up to 35 ∘ , and a solenoid magnet and detector covering the polar angles from 35° to 125° with full azimuthal coverage. Trajectory reconstruction in the forward direction using drift chambers and in the central direction using a vertex tracker results in momentum resolutions of < 1% and < 3%, respectively. Cherenkov counters, time-of-flight scintillators, and electromagnetic calorimeters provide good particle identification. Fast triggering and high data-acquisition rates allow operation at a luminosity of 1035 cm −2 s −1 . These capabilities are being used in a broad program to study the structure and interactions of nucleons, nuclei, and mesons, using polarized and unpolarized electron beams and targets for beam energies up to 11 GeV. This paper gives a general description of the design, construction, and performance of CLAS12.

Abstract

The J-PARC E36 experiment is searching for lepton universality violation with a stopped kaon beam by measuring the ratio of the K + decay widths Γ ( K e 2 ) ∕ Γ ( K μ 2 ) = Γ ( K + → e + ν e ) ∕ Γ ( K + → μ + ν μ ) . Since the radiative K + → e + ν e γ decays are backgrounds to be removed in this measurement, the radiated γ rays were detected in a CsI(Tl) calorimeter . The energy calibration for the 768 CsI(Tl) modules was performed using mono-chromatic μ + s from the K μ 2 decays. The delayed e + signals from the muon decays were required in order to improve the S/N ratio of the K μ 2 peak by suppressing background events. In addition, a new energy calibration method of the CsI(Tl) calorimeter using stopped cosmic muons has been established.

Abstract

Photon beam asymmetry Σ measurements for ω photoproduction in the reaction γ → p → ω p are reported for photon energies from 1.152 to 1.876 GeV. Data were taken using a linearly-polarized tagged photon beam, a cryogenic hydrogen target, and the CLAS spectrometer in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. The measurements obtained markedly increase the size of the database for this observable, extend coverage to higher energies, and resolve discrepancies in previously published data. Comparisons of these new results with predictions from a chiral-quark-based model and from a dynamical coupled-channels model indicate the importance of interferences between t-channel meson exchange and s- and u-channel contributions, underscoring sensitivity to the nucleon resonances included in those descriptions. Comparisons with the Bonn–Gatchina partial-wave analysis indicate the Σ data reported here help to fix the magnitudes of the interference terms between the leading amplitudes in that calculation (Pomeron exchange and the resonant portion of the J P = 3 / 2 + partial wave), as well as the resonant portions of the smaller partial waves with J P = 1 / 2 − , 3 / 2 − , and 5 / 2 + .

Abstract

First measurements of double-polarization observables in ω photoproduction off the proton are presented using transverse target polarization and data from the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) FROST experiment at Jefferson Lab. The beam-target asymmetry F has been measured using circularly polarized, tagged photons in the energy range 1200-2700 MeV, and the beam-target asymmetries H and P have been measured using linearly polarized, tagged photons in the energy range 1200-2000 MeV. These measurements significantly increase the database on polarization observables. The results are included in two partial-wave analyses and reveal significant contributions from several nucleon (N^{*}) resonances. In particular, contributions from new N^{*} resonances listed in the Review of Particle Properties are observed, which aid in reaching the goal of mapping out the nucleon resonance spectrum.

Abstract

This paper presents, for the first time, measurements of neutron transparency ratios for nuclei relative to C measured using the (e,e'n) reaction, spanning measured neutron momenta of 1.4 to 2.4 GeV/c. The transparency ratios were extracted in two kinematical regions, corresponding to knockout of mean-field nucleons and to the breakup of Short-Range Correlated nucleon pairs. The extracted neutron transparency ratios are consistent with each other for the two measured kinematical regions and agree with the proton transparencies extracted from new and previous (e,e'p) measurements, including those from neutron-rich nuclei such as lead. The data also agree with and confirm the Glauber approximation that is commonly used to interpret experimental data. The nuclear-mass-dependence of the extracted transparencies scales as A^{\alpha} with {\alpha} = -0.289 {\pm} 0.007, which is consistent with nuclear-surface dominance of the reactions., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

Abstract

In the past two decades, deeply virtual Compton scattering of electrons has been successfully used to advance our knowledge of the partonic structure of the free proton and investigate correlations between the transverse position and the longitudinal momentum of quarks inside the nucleon. Meanwhile, the structure of bound nucleons in nuclei has been studied in inclusive deep-inelastic lepton scattering experiments off nuclear targets, showing a significant difference in longitudinal momentum distribution of quarks inside the bound nucleon, known as the EMC effect. In this work, we report the first beam spin asymmetry (BSA) measurement of exclusive deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off a proton bound in $^4$He. The data used here were accumulated using a $6$ GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam incident on a pressurized $^4$He gaseous target placed within the CLAS spectrometer in Hall-B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The azimuthal angle ($\phi$) dependence of the BSA was studied in a wide range of virtual photon and scattered proton kinematics. The $Q^2$, $x_B$, and t dependencies of the BSA on the bound proton are compared with those on the free proton. In the whole kinematical region of our measurements, the BSA on the bound proton is smaller by 20\% to 40\%, indicating possible medium modification of its partonic structure.

Abstract

We measured the triple coincidence A(e,e'np) and A(e,e'pp) reactions on carbon, aluminum, iron, and lead targets at Q2 > 1.5 (GeV/c)2, xB > 1.1 and missing momentum > 400 MeV/c. This was the first direct measurement of both proton-proton (pp) and neutron-proton (np) short-range correlated (SRC) pair knockout from heavy asymmetric nuclei. For all measured nuclei, the average proton-proton (pp) to neutron-proton (np) reduced cross-section ratio is about 6%, in agreement with previous indirect measurements. Correcting for Single-Charge Exchange effects decreased the SRC pairs ratio to ~ 3%, which is lower than previous results. Comparisons to theoretical Generalized Contact Formalism (GCF) cross-section calculations show good agreement using both phenomenological and chiral nucleon-nucleon potentials, favoring a lower pp to np pair ratio. The ability of the GCF calculation to describe the experimental data using either phenomenological or chiral potentials suggests possible reduction of scale- and scheme-dependence in cross section ratios. Abstract

The atomic nucleus is made of protons and neutrons (nucleons), that are themselves composed of quarks and gluons. Understanding how the quark-gluon structure of a nucleon bound in an atomic nucleus is modified by the surrounding nucleons is an outstanding challenge. Although evidence for such modification, known as the EMC effect, was first observed over 35 years ago, there is still no generally accepted explanation of its cause. Recent observations suggest that the EMC effect is related to close-proximity Short Range Correlated (SRC) nucleon pairs in nuclei. Here we report the first simultaneous, high-precision, measurements of the EMC effect and SRC abundances. We show that the EMC data can be explained by a universal modification of the structure of nucleons in neutron-proton (np) SRC pairs and present the first data-driven extraction of this universal modification function. This implies that, in heavier nuclei with many more neutrons than protons, each proton is more likely than each neutron to belong to an SRC pair and hence to have its quark structure distorted., Comment: Published in Nature. Abstract

We measured the g 1 spin structure function of the deuteron at low Q 2 , where QCD can be approximated with chiral perturbation theory ( χ PT ). The data cover the resonance region, up to an invariant mass of W ≈ 1.9 GeV . The generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum, the moment Γ d 1 and the spin polarizability γ d 0 are precisely determined down to a minimum Q 2 of 0.02 GeV 2 for the first time, about 2.5 times lower than that of previous data. We compare them to several χ PT calculations and models. These results are the first in a program of benchmark measurements of polarization observables in the χ PT domain.

Abstract

This paper reports the measurement of polarized and unpolarized cross sections for the ep -> e'p' reaction, which is comprised of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) and Bethe-Heitler (BH) processes, at an electron beam energy of 5.88 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility using the Large Acceptance Spectrometer CLAS. The unpolarized cross sections and polarized cross section differences have been measured over broad kinematics, 0.10 < x_B < 0.58, 1.0 < Q^2 < 4.8 GeV^2, and 0.09 < -t < 2.00 GeV^2. The results are found to be consistent with previous CLAS data, and these new data are discussed in the framework of the generalized parton distribution approach. Calculations with two widely used phenomenological models, denoted VGG and KMSC, are approximately compatible with the experimental results over a large portion of the kinematic range of the data., 27 pages, 24 figures, Accepted for publication in PRC

Abstract

International audience; The atomic nucleus is one of the densest and most complex quantum-mechanical systems in nature. Nuclei account for nearly all the mass of the visible Universe. The properties of individual nucleons (protons and neutrons) in nuclei can be probed by scattering a high-energy particle from the nucleus and detecting this particle after it scatters, often also detecting an additional knocked-out proton. Analysis of electron- and proton-scattering experiments suggests that some nucleons in nuclei form close-proximity neutron–proton pairs 1$^{–}$12 with high nucleon momentum, greater than the nuclear Fermi momentum. However, how excess neutrons in neutron-rich nuclei form such close-proximity pairs remains unclear. Here we measure protons and, for the first time, neutrons knocked out of medium-to-heavy nuclei by high-energy electrons and show that the fraction of high-momentum protons increases markedly with the neutron excess in the nucleus, whereas the fraction of high-momentum neutrons decreases slightly. This effect is surprising because in the classical nuclear shell model, protons and neutrons obey Fermi statistics, have little correlation and mostly fill independent energy shells. These high-momentum nucleons in neutron-rich nuclei are important for understanding nuclear parton distribution functions (the partial momentum distribution of the constituents of the nucleon) and changes in the quark distributions of nucleons bound in nuclei (the EMC effect) 1$^{,}$13$^{,}$14 . They are also relevant for the interpretation of neutrino-oscillation measurements 15 and understanding of neutron-rich systems such as neutron stars 3$^{,}$16 .

Abstract

The $f_0$(1500) meson resonance is one of several contenders to have significant mixing with the lightest glueball. This resonance is well established from several previous experiments. Here we present the first photoproduction data for the $f_0$(1500) via decay into the $K_S^0 K_S^0$ channel using the CLAS detector. The reaction $��p$ -> $f_0 p$ -> $K_S^0 K_S^0 p$, where J = 0, 2, was measured with photon energies from 2.7 to 5.1 GeV. A clear peak is seen at 1500 MeV in the background subtracted invariant mass spectra of the two kaons. This is enhanced if the measured 4-momentum transfer to the proton target is restricted to be less than 1.0 GeV2. By comparing data with simulations, it can be concluded that the peak at 1500 MeV is produced primarily at low t, which is consistent with a t-channel production mechanism., 12 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

First results from the longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target (FROST) program are reported. The double-polarization observable E, for the reaction (p) over right arrow((gamma) over right arrow, pi(+))n, has been measured using a circularly polarized tagged-photon beam, with energies from 0.35 to 2.37 GeV. The final-state pions were detected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. These polarization data agree fairly well with previous partial-wave analyses at low photon energies. Over much of the covered energy range, however, significant deviations are observed, particularly in the high-energy region where high-L multipoles contribute. The data have been included in new multipole analyses resulting in updated nucleon resonance parameters. We report updated fits from the Bonn-Gatchina, Jfilich-Bonn, and SAID groups. Abstract

The quasifree $\ensuremath{\gamma}d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p(p)$ differential cross section has been measured with CLAS at photon beam energies ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ from 0.445 to 2.510 GeV (corresponding to $W$ from 1.311 to 2.366 GeV) for pion center-of-mass angles $cos{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{c.m.}$ from $\ensuremath{-}0.72$ to 0.92. A correction for final state interactions has been applied to these data to extract the $\ensuremath{\gamma}n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ differential cross sections. These cross sections are quoted in 8428 $({E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}},cos{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{c.m.})$ bins, a factor of nearly 3 increase in the world statistics for this channel in this kinematic range. These new data help to constrain coupled-channel analysis fits used to disentangle the spectrum of ${N}^{*}$ resonances and extract their properties. Selected photon decay amplitudes ${N}^{*}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}n$ at the resonance poles are determined for the first time and are reported here.

Abstract

[Background] The electromagnetic form factors of the proton measured by unpolarized and polarized electron scattering experiments show a significant disagreement that grows with the squared four momentum transfer ($Q^{2}$). Calculations have shown that the two measurements can be largely reconciled by accounting for the contributions of two-photon exchange (TPE). TPE effects are not typically included in the standard set of radiative corrections since theoretical calculations of the TPE effects are highly model dependent, and, until recently, no direct evidence of significant TPE effects has been observed. [Purpose] We measured the ratio of positron-proton to electron-proton elastic-scattering cross sections in order to determine the TPE contribution to elastic electron-proton scattering and thereby resolve the proton electric form factor discrepancy. [Methods] We produced a mixed simultaneous electron-positron beam in Jefferson Lab's Hall B by passing the 5.6 GeV primary electron beam through a radiator to produce a bremsstrahlung photon beam and then passing the photon beam through a convertor to produce electron/positron pairs. The mixed electron-positron (lepton) beam with useful energies from approximately 0.85 to 3.5 GeV then struck a 30-cm long liquid hydrogen (LH$_2$) target located within the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). By detecting both the scattered leptons and the recoiling protons we identified and reconstructed elastic scattering events and determined the incident lepton energy. Abstract

The cross section of the exclusive eta electroproduction reaction ep -> e'p'eta was measured at Jefferson Laboratorywith a 5.75 GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections d(4) sigma/dtdQ(2) dx(B)d phi(eta) and structure functions sigma(U) = sigma(T) + epsilon sigma(L), sigma(TT), and sigma(LT), as functions of t, were obtained over a wide range of Q(2) and x(B). The eta structure functions are compared with those previously measured for pi(0) at the same kinematics. At low t, both pi(0) and eta are described reasonably well by generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in which chiral-odd transversity GPDs are dominant. The pi(0) and eta data, when taken together, can facilitate the flavor decomposition of the transversity GPDs.

Abstract

Quasi-elastic electron scattering on the deuteron is a benchmark reaction to test our understanding of deuteron structure and the properties and interactions of the two nucleons bound in the deuteron. The experimental data presented here can be used to test state-of-the-art models of the deuteron and the two-nucleon interaction in the final state after two-body breakup of the deuteron. Focusing on polarization degrees of freedom, we gain information on spin-momentum correlations in the deuteron ground state (due to the D-state admixture) and on the limits of the Impulse Approximation (IA) picture as it applies to measurements of spin-dependent observables like spin structure functions for bound nucleons. We measured the beam-target double spin asymmetry for quasi-elastic electron scattering off the deuteron at several beam energies using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The deuterons were polarized along (or opposite to) the beam direction. The double spin asymmetries were measured as a function of photon virtuality , missing momentum, and the angle between the (inferred) "spectator" neutron and the momentum transfer direction. The results are compared with a recent model that includes Final State Interactions (FSI) using a complete parameterization of nucleon-nucleon scattering, as well as a simplified model using the Plane Wave Impulse Approximation (PWIA). We find overall good agreement with both the PWIA and FSI expectations at low to medium missing momenta, including the change of the asymmetry due to the contribution of the deuteron D-state at higher momenta. Abstract

We report on the first measurement of cross sections for exclusive deeply virtual pion electroproduction off the proton, $e p \to e^\prime n \pi^+$, above the resonance region at backward pion center-of-mass angles. The $\varphi^*_{\pi}$-dependent cross sections were measured, from which we extracted three combinations of structure functions of the proton. Our results are compatible with calculations based on nucleon-to-pion transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) and shed new light on nucleon structure., Comment: 7 pages, 6figures

Abstract

We report measurements of target- and double-spin asymmetries for the exclusive channel $\vec e\vec p\to e\pi^+ (n)$ in the nucleon resonance region at Jefferson Lab using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). These asymmetries were extracted from data obtained using a longitudinally polarized NH$_3$ target and a longitudinally polarized electron beam with energies 1.1, 1.3, 2.0, 2.3 and 3.0 GeV. The new results are consistent with previous CLAS publications but are extended to a low $Q^2$ range from $0.0065$ to $0.35$ (GeV$/c$)$^2$. The $Q^2$ access was made possible by a custom-built Cherenkov detector that allowed the detection of electrons for scattering angles as low as $6^\circ$. These results are compared with the unitary isobar models JANR and MAID, the partial-wave analysis prediction from SAID and the dynamic model DMT. In many kinematic regions our results, in particular results on the target asymmetry, help to constrain the polarization-dependent components of these models.

Abstract

The spin structure functions g 1 for the proton and the deuteron have been measured over a wide kinematic range in x and Q 2 using 1.6 and 5.7 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons incident upon polarized NH3 and ND3 targets at Jefferson Lab. Scattered electrons were detected in the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer, for 0.05 Q 2 5 GeV 2 and W 3 GeV . The first moments of g 1 for the proton and deuteron are presented – both have a negative slope at low Q 2 , as predicted by the extended Gerasimov–Drell–Hearn sum rule. The first extraction of the generalized forward spin polarizability of the proton γ 0 p is also reported. This quantity shows strong Q 2 dependence at low Q 2 . Our analysis of the Q 2 evolution of the first moment of g 1 shows agreement in leading order with Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory. However, a significant discrepancy is observed between the γ 0 p data and Chiral Perturbation calculations for γ 0 p , even at the lowest Q 2 .

Abstract

Theoretical calculations predict the modification of properties of vector mesons, such as a shift in their masses and/or broadening of their widths in dense nuclear matter. These effects can be related to partial restoration of chiral symmetry at high density or temperature. The light vector mesons (ρ, ω, and ϕ) were photo-produced on 2 H , C , Ti , Fe , and Pb targets at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The data were taken with a beam of tagged photons with energies up to 4 GeV. The properties of the ρ vector meson at normal nuclear densities and zero temperature,were investigated via their rare leptonic decay to e+e-. This decay channel is preferred over hadronic modes in order to eliminate final state interactions in the nuclear matter. A combinatorial background was subtracted from the invariant mass spectra using a well-established event-mixing technique. The ρ meson mass spectrum was extracted after the ω and ϕ signals were removed in a nearly model-independent way. The rho meson mass distributions were extracted for each of the targets. Comparisons were made between the ρ mass spectra from the heavy targets ( A > 2) with the mass spectrum extracted from the deuterium target. With respect to the ρ-meson mass, we obtain a small shift compatible with zero. Also, we measure widths consistent with standard nuclear many-body effects such as collisional broadening and Fermi motion. In this experiment, due to the long lifetimes and momenta greater than 0.8 GeV, the ω and ϕ mesons have a high probability of decaying outside the nucleus in their vacuum state. However, their in-medium widths can be accessed through their absorption inside the nucleus. Preliminary results on the ratios of the nuclear transparencies of the ω and ϕ mesons as a function of the number of target nucleons A, have been obtained and indicate a substantial widening in the medium.

Abstract

The $e p\to e^\prime p \rho^0$ reaction has been measured, using the 5.754 GeV electron beam of Jefferson Lab and the CLAS detector. This represents the largest ever set of data for this reaction in the valence region. Integrated and differential cross sections are presented. The $W$, $Q^2$ and $t$ dependences of the cross section are compared to theoretical calculations based on $t$-channel meson-exchange Regge theory on the one hand and on quark handbag diagrams related to Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) on the other hand. The Regge approach can describe at the $\approx$ 30% level most of the features of the present data while the two GPD calculations that are presented in this article which succesfully reproduce the high energy data strongly underestimate the present data. The question is then raised whether this discrepancy originates from an incomplete or inexact way of modelling the GPDs or the associated hard scattering amplitude or whether the GPD formalism is simply inapplicable in this region due to higher-twists contributions, incalculable at present., Comment: 29 pages, 29 figures

Abstract

Photoproduction of vector mesons off nuclei were performed at Jefferson Lab using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The properties of the ρ vector mesons were investigated via their rare leptonic decay to e+e−. After subtracting the combinatorial background, the ρ meson mass distributions were extracted for each of the targets. We observe no effects on the mass of the ρ meson, some widening in titanium and iron is observed consistent with the collisional broadening.

Abstract

The photoproduction of vector mesons on various nuclei has been studied using the Cebaf Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Laboratory, and here we present preliminary results. All three vector mesons, ρ, ω, and ϕ, are observed via their decay to e+e-, in order to reduce the effects of final state interactions in the nucleus. Of particular interest is possible in-medium effects on the properties of the ρ meson. The ρ spectral function is extracted from the data on various nuclei, carbon, iron, and titanium, and compared to the spectrum from liquid deuterium, which is relatively free of nuclear effects. We observe no effects on the mass of the ρ meson, however, there is some widening of the resonance in titanium and iron, which is consistent with expected collisional broadening.

Abstract

Single-beam, single-target, and double-spin asymmetries for hard exclusive photon production on the proton $\vec{e}\vec{p} \to e' p'\gamma$ are presented. The data were taken at Jefferson Lab using the CLAS detector and a longitudinally polarized ${}^{14}$NH$_3$ target. The three asymmetries were measured in 165 4-dimensional kinematic bins, covering the widest kinematic range ever explored simultaneously for beam and target-polarization observables in the valence quark region. The kinematic dependences of the obtained asymmetries are discussed and compared to the predictions of models of Generalized Parton Distributions. The measurement of three DVCS spin observables at the same kinematic points allows a quasi-model-independent extraction of the imaginary parts of the $H$ and $\tilde{H}$ Compton Form Factors, which give insight into the electric and axial charge distributions of valence quarks in the proton., Comment: 28 pages, 25 figures

We present the results of our investigation of a series of internal holding magnets for longitudinal and transverse polarizations. These magnets will be placed inside a polarizing refrigerator designed for frozen spin targets. Abstract

In this article, we report on on investigations of the in-medium meson-nucleon interaction for the ω, ɸ, and [Formula: see text] mesons. Their in-medium cross sections and collisional widths can be measured by their absorption in a nucleus. In Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab), the CLAS detector was used to study these long-lived mesons in nuclei. All of the mesons were produced by a photon beam with E γ < 4 GeV in targets of 2 H , C , Fe , and Pb . The vector mesons were reconstructed through their decay into e+e-. The [Formula: see text] mesons were measured with their dominant π+π- decay. The in-medium widths of the ω and ɸ mesons are found to be substantially larger than their values from the elementary reaction with a free nucleon. The analysis with the [Formula: see text] is preliminary, and its status will be discussd in this paper.

Abstract

The inclusive polarized structure functions of the proton and deuteron, g(1)(p) and g(1)(d) , were measured with high statistical precision using polarized 6 GeV electrons incident on a polarized ammonia target in Hall B at Jefferson Laboratory. Electrons scattered at laboratory angles between 18 and 45 degrees were detected using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). For the usual deep inelastic region kinematics, Q(2) > 1 GeV2 and the final-state invariant mass W > 2 GeV, the ratio of polarized to unpolarized structure functions g(1)/F-1 is found to be nearly independent of Q(2) at fixed x. Significant resonant structure is apparent at values of W up to 2.3 GeV. In the framework of perturbative quantum chromodynamics, the high-W results can be used to better constrain the polarization of quarks and gluons in the nucleon, as well as high-twist contributions.

Abstract

The atomic nucleus is composed of two different kinds of fermions, protons and neutrons. If the protons and neutrons did not interact, the Pauli exclusion principle would force the majority fermions (usually neutrons) to have a higher average momentum. Our high-energy electron scattering measurements using 12C, 27Al, 56Fe and 208Pb targets show that, even in heavy neutron-rich nuclei, short-range interactions between the fermions form correlated high-momentum neutron-proton pairs. Thus, in neutron-rich nuclei, protons have a greater probability than neutrons to have momentum greater than the Fermi momentum. This finding has implications ranging from nuclear few body systems to neutron stars and may also be observable experimentally in two-spin state, ultra-cold atomic gas systems., Comment: Published in Science. 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

See paper for full list of authors; We report the first measurement of the photoproduction cross section of the $\phi$ meson in its neutral decay mode in the reaction $\gamma p \to p\phi(K_SK_L)$. The experiment was performed with a tagged photon beam of energy $1.6 \le E_\gamma \le 3.6$ GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target of the CLAS spectrometer at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The $p \phi$ final state is identified via reconstruction of $K_S$ in the invariant mass of two oppositely charged pions and by requiring the missing particle in the reaction $\gamma p \to p K_S X$ to be $K_L$. The presented results significantly enlarge the existing data on $\phi$-photoproduction. These data, combined with the data from the charged decay mode, will help to constrain different mechanisms of $\phi$ photoproduction.

Abstract

There is tremendous interest both experimentally and theoretically in possible modification of the properties of vector mesons, such as a shift in their masses and/or broadening of their widths in dense nuclear matter. These effects can be related to partial restoration of chiral symmetry at high density or temperature. The light vector mesons (ρ, ω, and ϕ) were photo-produced on 2H, C, Ti, Fe, and Pb targets at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The properties of the ρ vector meson at normal nuclear densities and zero temperature were investigated via their rare leptonic decay to e + e − . The rho meson mass distributions were extracted for each of the targets. With respect to the ρ-meson mass, we obtain a small shift compatible with zero. Also, we measure widths consistent with standard nuclear many-body effects such as collisional broadening and Fermi motion.

Abstract

Background: The discrepancy between proton electromagnetic form factors extracted using unpolarized and polarized scattering data is believed to be a consequence of two-photon exchange (TPE) effects. However, the calculations of TPE corrections have significant model dependence, and there is limited direct experimental evidence for such corrections. Purpose: The TPE contributions depend on the sign of the lepton charge in e(+/-)p scattering, but the luminosities of secondary positron beams limited past measurement at large scattering angles, where the TPE effects are believe to be most significant. We present the results of a new experimental technique for making direct e(+/-)p comparisons, which has the potential to make precise measurements over a broad range in Q(2) and scattering angles. Methods: We use the Jefferson Laboratory electron beam and the Hall B photon tagger to generate a clean but untagged photon beam. The photon beam impinges on a converter foil to generate a mixed beam of electrons, positrons, and photons. A chicane is used to separate and recombine the electron and positron beams while the photon beam is stopped by a photon blocker. This provides a combined electron and positron beam, with energies from 0.5 to 3.2 GeV, which impinges on a liquid hydrogen target. The large acceptance CLAS detector is used to identify and reconstruct elastic scattering events, determining both the initial lepton energy and the sign of the scattered lepton. Results: The data were collected in two days with a primary electron beam energy of only 3.3 GeV, limiting the data from this run to smaller values of Q(2) and scattering angle. Nonetheless, this measurement yields a data sample for e(+/-)p with statistics comparable to those of the best previous measurements. We have shown that we can cleanly identify elastic scattering events and correct for the difference in acceptance for electron and positron scattering. Because we ran with only one polarity for the chicane, we are unable to study the difference between the incoming electron and positron beams. This systematic effect leads to the largest uncertainty in the final ratio of positron to electron scattering: R = 1.027 +/- 0.005 +/- 0.05 for = 0.206 GeV2 and 0.830

Abstract

Nuclear transparency, Tp(A), is a measure of the average probability for a struck proton to escape the nucleus without significant re-interaction. Previously, nuclear transparencies were extructed for quasi-elastic A(e,e'p) knockout of protons with momentum below the Fermi momentum, where the spectral functions are well known. In this paper we extract a novel observable, the transparency ratio, Tp(A)/T_p(12C), for knockout of high-missing-momentum protons from the breakup of short range correlated pairs (2N-SRC) in Al, Fe and Pb nuclei relative to C. The ratios were measured at momentum transfer Q^2 > 1.5 (GeV/c)^2 and x_B > 1.2 where the reaction is expected to be dominated by electron scattering from 2N-SRC. The transparency ratios of the knocked-out protons coming from 2N-SRC breakup are 20 - 30% lower than those of previous results for low missing momentum. They agree with Glauber calculations and agree with renormalization of the previously published transparencies as proposed by recent theoretical investigations. Abstract

Measuring nucleon-nucleon Short Range Correlations (SRC) has been a goal of the nuclear physics community for many years. They are an important part of the nuclear wavefunction, accounting for almost all of the high-momentum strength. They are closely related to the EMC effect. While their overall probability has been measured, measuring their momentum distributions is more difficult. In order to determine the best configuration for studying SRC momentum distributions, we measured the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction, looking at events with high momentum protons (pp > 0.35 GeV/c) and a low momentum neutron (pn < 0.2 GeV/c). We examined two angular configurations: either both protons emitted forward or one proton emitted forward and one backward (with respect to the momentum transfer, →q). Thus, the measured relative momentum distribution of the events with one forward and one backward proton was much closer to the calculated initial-state pp relative momentum distribution, indicating that this is the preferred configuration for measuring SRC.

Abstract

The TREK program consists of a series of experiments that have been proposed to use the new, recently commissioned kaon beamline K1.1BR at the new J-PARC Hadron Facility in Japan. A beam of low-energy positively charged kaons will be stopped, and their decays observed with a large acceptance toroidal spectrometer capable of tracking charged particles with high resolution, combined with a photon calorimeter and additional instrumentation with muon polarimeters. The first two experiments, requiring less beam intensity, aim to test lepton universality in the Ke2/Kμ2 ratio with 0.2% statistical uncertainty, and to search for heavy sterile neutrinos in two-body kaon decays. Ultimately, the Time Reversal Experiment with Kaons (TREK) aims to find New Physics beyond the Standard Model by a precision measurement of the T-violating transverse polarization PT of muons in the K+μ3 decay of stopped kaons with a sensitivity of 10−4.

Abstract

The properties of hadrons, such as their masses and widths, are predicted to be modified in dense and/or hot nuclear matter. Particular attention has been given to the modifications of vector-meson properties in ordinary nuclear matter where chiral symmetry is predicted to be partially restored due to a change in the quark condensate. Different models predict relatively large measurable changes in the mass and/or the width of these mesons. The e+e− decay channel of these mesons has negligible final-state interactions (FSI), providing an ideal tool to study their possible in-medium modifications Due to its short lifetime, the ρ meson has a substantial probability of decaying in the nucleus and its study has been previously reported. Due to their long lifetimes, the ω and φ mesons are ideal candidates for the study of possible modifications of the in-medium meson-nucleon interaction through their absorption inside the nucleus. Abstract

A signature S d y of isoscalar spin-transfer strength has been tested in the inelastic scattering of 400 MeV deuterons from 12 C. It was applied to search for ΔS =1 ΔT =0 strength in 40 Ca and 12 C. In 40 Ca, spin excitations were found in the 9 MeV region and over a broad range in the continuum with a cluster of strength around 15 MeV. In 12 C, ΔS=1 ΔT =0 levels were observed at 12.7 MeV (well known T =0 1 + level), 18.3 MeV (2 − T =0 level) and 20.4 MeV. Resonances were found at 20 MeV and at 30 MeV. Beyond 35 MeV the ΔS =1 ΔT =0 response is similar to the one observed in 40 Ca. Microscopic DWIA calculations agree nicely with the 12 C data.

Abstract

A new deuteron tensor polarimeter (POLDER), based upon the charge exchange reaction 1 H (→ d, 2p ) n , has been constructed and calibrated in the energy range 175–500 MeV for all polarisation signals. The large figures of merit obtained make POLDER a unique instrument in this energy domain. The operation of this polarimeter has been checked in practice in a test experiment on 40 Ca (→ d , → d ′) 40 Ca elastic scattering performed at Ed = 380 MeV.

47. The In-medium Mass and Widths of Light Vector Mesons

Abstract

Partial restoration of chiral symmetry in ordinary nuclear matter suggests the modification of properties of vector mesons, such as a shift in mass and/or a change of width. Photoproduction of vector mesons off nuclei were performed at Jefferson Lab using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The properties of the ρ, ω and φ mesons were investigated via their rare leptonic decay to e+e−. This decay channel has an advantage over hadronic modes as it eliminates final state interactions in the nuclear matter. After subtracting the combinatorial background, the meson mass distributions were extracted for each of the nuclear targets. No significant mass shift is observed, however substantial increase in the widths of the mesons is reported.

Abstract

Chiral symmetry, which is spontaneously broken in vacuum, is predicted to be partially restored in ordinary nuclear matter. The properties of vector mesons, such as their masses and/or widths are expected to change in the medium. The photoproduction reaction off nuclei is a very clean way of producing the ρ, ω and φ mesons, and detect them via their hadronic or leptonic decays. The leptonic decay to e+e− has a small branching ratio but has the advantage of being free from final state interactions. One critical aspect in all these experiments is the correct determination of the shape and magnitude of the combinatorial background. The in‐medium mass distributions and yields are compared to those measured in vacuum. No significant shift is observed in the masses of the mesons, however substantial increase in their widths is reported.

Abstract

The high‐energy and short‐distances regime of the strong interaction is successfully described by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) involving quark and gluon degrees of freedom. In the low‐energy and large‐distances regime, QCD‐inspired effective models are needed to describe the observed phenomena. These models predict a modification of the properties of hadrons in nuclear matter from their free‐space values. A review of the theoretical and experimental approach to the in‐medium modifications of light hadrons will be given.
