Background Osedax, the deep-sea annelid found at sunken whalefalls, is known to host bacterial endosymbionts intracellularly in specialized roots, that help it feed exclusively on vertebrate bones. Past studies, however, have also made mention of external bacteria on their trunks. Here, we present an examination of the bacterial communities associated with the external surfaces of seven species of Osedax worms. Using molecular, metagenomic, and microscopy analyses we reveal a dynamic community of Campylobacterales epibionts associated with Osedax that are unique from close relatives and metabolically suited to different successional stages of whale decomposition. Results During this 14-year study, we reveal a dynamic, yet persistent, succession of Campylobacterales epibionts integrated into the epidermis of Osedax, that change over time as the whale carcass degrades on the sea floor. The epibionts associated with seven species of Osedax, which comprise 67% of the bacterial community on the trunk, are initially dominated by the genus Arcobacter (at early time points < 24 months), the Sulfurospirillum at intermediate stages (~ 50 months), and the Sulfurimonas at later stages (>140 months) of whale carcass decomposition. Metagenome analysis of the epibiont metabolic capabilities suggests a transition from heterotrophy to autotrophy along the successional gradient, and differences in their capacity to metabolize oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur. Compared to free living relatives, the Osedax epibionts were highly enriched in transposable elements, implicating genetic exchange on the host surface, and contained numerous secretions systems with enriched effector proteins having eukaryotic-like domains. Conclusions Diverse bacteria form non-transient associations with the external surfaces of eukaryotes and can contribute to the health and physiology of their hosts. The recurrence of three Campylobacterales associated with diverse Osedaxspecies collected from multiple deep-sea locations suggests they are specific epibionts that share a long-evolutionary history with these enigmatic, yet widely distributed deep-sea worms. All three epibionts have an affinity for organic-rich and sulfide-rich habitats, however a successional shift in their composition reveals that they are a dynamic community that changes over time. These results provide evidence of a persistent yet dynamic relationship between Osedax and specific Campylobacterales epibionts that possess unique genomic features.

Despite a recent report of high concentrations of microplastics and microfibers in the mesopelagic waters of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS), little is known about these particles in surface waters. From 2017 to 2019, we sampled two nearshore and two offshore locations within MBNMS using a manta trawl and analyzed these samples for microplastics and microfibers. We found an average concentration of 1.32 ± 0.70 (SE) particles per m3. We found the highest concentration of particles closest to shore, and the lowest concentration above the remote Davidson Seamount. Fiber-like debris was more common in offshore, as compared to nearshore, sites. Overall, particles in our samples were primarily buoyant synthetic polymers, including polypropylene and polyethylene. Our results provide baseline data on the degree of microplastic and microfiber pollution in MBNMS surface waters and confirm that this pollution can be found in waters from the surface to at least 1000 m depth.

More non-native species (NNS) are reported from harbors, estuaries and protected embayments than in wave-exposed, open-coast habitats. In California (USA), hundreds of NNS have become established in international ports, and dozens are known from smaller estuaries. In contrast, only 22 NNS are reported from the state’s 1350 km of open coast. As a result, the perception that open-coast habitats are not vulnerable to invasions has persisted. Management and monitoring focuses on ports and estuaries; the last major monitoring effort on the open coast occurred in 2004. Much of the species-rich Central California coast is now part of a network of marine protected areas (MPAs). We surveyed 12 wave-swept rocky intertidal and eight subtidal sites (from 37°53′40N 122°42′30W to 36°31′16N 121°56′22W) for NNS. At least one NNS was detected at half of the sites surveyed, but most were not widespread or abundant. One exception, a bryozoan in the Watersipora spp. complex, known primarily from ports and estuaries, was found at multiple sites, and was abundant at some. Another non-native, the alga Caulacanthus ustulatus, was abundant at a single site. MPAs were just as likely as sites outside of MPAs to have NNS. For subtidal sites, proximity to a harbor was correlated with the abundance of non-natives. Our findings suggest that our study area is still relatively uninvaded, but the success of Watersipora within some of these highly diverse rocky shore sites underscores the potential vulnerability of high-value open-coast systems to invasions.

The physiological responses of plants to variable levels of root and shoot herbivory in the field may yield valuable insights regarding potential compensation or tolerance responses for herbivory. In an infestation of Centaurea stoebe (spotted knapweed) located in the Colorado foothills, we measured physiology, biomass, and flower production of individual plants undergoing a natural range of herbivory by the above- and belowground biological control insects, Larinus minutus and Cyphocleonus achates. Over the growing season, net carbon assimilation rate, transpiration, stomatal conductance, and intercellular leaf [CO2] (C i) all decreased, while water use efficiency increased. The decrease in these physiological traits was due to an increase in the intensity of L. minutus damage over time; effects of C. achates root damage to plant physiology, including transpiration were only marginally significant. Sea anemones (Phylum Cnidaria; Class Anthozoa, Order Actiniaria) exhibit a diversity of developmental patterns that include cloning by fission. Because natural histories of clonal and aclonal sea anemones are quite different, the gain and loss of fission is an important feature of actiniarian lineages. We have used mitochondrial DNA and nuclear intron DNA phylogenies to investigate the evolution of longitudinal fission in sixteen species in the genus Anthopleura, and reconstructed an aclonal ancestor that has given rise at least four times to clonal descendents. For A. elegantissima from the northeastern Pacific Ocean, a transition to clonality by fission was associated with an up-shore habitat shift, supporting prior hypotheses that clonal growth is an adaptation to the upper shore. Fission in Actiniaria likely precedes its advent in Anthopleura, and its repeated loss and gain is perplexing. Field studies of the acontiate sea anemone Aiptasia californica provided insight to the mechanisms that regulate fission: subtidal Aiptasia responded to experimentally destabilized substrata by increasing rates of pedal laceration. We put forth a general hypothesis for actiniarian fission in which sustained tissue stretch (a consequence of substratum instability or intrinsic behavior) induces tissue degradation, which in turn induces regeneration. The gain and loss of fission in Anthopleura lineages may only require the gain and loss of some form of stretching behavior. In this view, tissue stretch initiates a cascade of developmental events without requiring complex gene regulatory linkages.

The Davidson Seamount is located 120 km to the southwest of Monterey, along the California coast, USA. It is 2,400 m tall; yet, it is still 1,250 m below the sea surface. In May 2002, 90 hours of digital video was recorded from all depths of the Davidson Seamount, using a remotely operated vehicle, and deep-sea coral specimens were collected. Preliminary analyses indicate that 20 coral taxa were found, and they were almost exclusively located in high relief, ridge areas. Other species were noted on or adjacent to the corals. Because of its pristine nature, as well as human threats and great potential for education, the Davidson Seamount is under consideration for protection as part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

Patients with angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy (AILD)-type T-cell lymphoma may develop hypergammaglobulinemia. Among four cases of AILD-type T-cell lymphoma that we have studied, we detected a correlation between the number of plasma cells in tissue and the extent of interleukin-6 (IL-6) expression in lymphoma cells. We did not detect IL-6 in three patients who had no hypergammaglobulinemia and whose tissues showed only minimal plasma cell infiltration. In the fourth patient we observed an abundant IL-6 production by lymphoma cells, which accounted for a B-cell plasmacytic tissue response and for hypergammaglobulinemia. The pathogenic significance of IL-6 was substantiated by a concomitant decrease in the serum IL-6 level, measurable tumor mass, and immunoglobulin levels, as well as by a decline in the proportion of plasmacytoid cells in peripheral blood promptly on administration of chemotherapy. Plasmacytoid B cells could be maintained in culture in the presence of IL-6, but viability was lost on co-incubation with anti-IL-6. Interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor were not produced by T lymphoma cells and were incapable of sustaining plasmacytoid B-cell viability in vitro. Small amounts of IL-4 were noted in T lymphoma cells. Thus, in this case of AILD-type T-cell lymphoma, tumor cells with a T-cell phenotype produced IL-6 in large quantities, explaining the accompanying B-cell and plasmacytic histologic changes and humoral disease manifestations, including marked hypergammaglobulinemia. Although not all cases of AILD-type T-cell lymphoma have an accompanying plasma cell proliferation and hypergammaglobulinemia, and although the cytokine network in these patients may be more complex than has been recognized, this case with IL-6 expression serves to illustrate the utility of cytokine assays in the analysis of the histopathologic and clinical heterogeneities of peripheral T-cell lymphomas.

Coastal areas continue to be popular destinations for tourists as well as for a large population who now reside year-round near coasts and whose size is predicted to grow steadily. Along with rapid growth in recreational and commercial marine activities, this increase in coastal development also brings issues related to urban runoff, water quality, beach access, and marine ecosystem health. All of these factors contribute to an increase in pressure on the living marine biota found in coastal waters. Coastal managers are therefore faced with the dual task of conserving and protecting marine resources as well as allowing for multiple uses within nearshore waters.
