We have used the multiobject mode of the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to obtain low-resolution 1-5um spectra of 22 brown dwarf candidates in the Orion Nebula Cluster, which were selected with archival images from the Hubble Space Telescope. One of the targets was previously classified as a Herbig-Haro (HH) object and exhibits strong emission in H I, H2, and the fundamental band of CO, further demonstrating that HH objects can have bright emission in that CO band. The remaining targets have late spectral types (M6.5 to early L) and are young based on gravity sensitive features, as expected for low-mass members of the cluster. According to theoretical evolutionary models, these objects should have masses that range from the hydrogen burning limit to 0.003-0.007 Msun. Two of the NIRSpec targets were identified as proplyds in earlier analysis of Hubble images. They have spectral types of M6.5 and M7.5, making them two of the coolest and least massive known proplyds. Another brown dwarf shows absorption bands at 3-5um from ices containing H2O, CO2, OCN-, and CO, indicating that it is either an edge-on class II system or a class I protostar. It is the coolest and least massive object that has detections of these ice features. In addition, it appears to be the first candidate for a protostellar brown dwarf that has spectroscopy confirming its late spectral type., Comment: Astronomical Journal, in press

Understanding the expansion of the Universe remains a profound challenge in fundamental physics. The complexity of solving General Relativity equations in the presence of intricate, inhomogeneous flows has compelled cosmological models to rely on perturbation theory in a homogeneous FLRW background. This approach accounts for a redshift of light encompassing contributions from both the cosmological background expansion along the photon's trajectory and Doppler effects at emission due to peculiar motions. However, this computation of the redshift is not covariant, as it hinges on specific coordinate choices that may distort physical interpretations of the relativity of motion. In this study, we show that peculiar motions, when tracing the dynamics along time-like geodesics, must contribute to the redshift of light through a local volume expansion factor, in addition to the background expansion. By employing a covariant approach to redshift calculation, we address the central question of whether the cosmological principle alone guarantees that the averaged local volume expansion factor matches the background expansion. We establish that this holds true only in scenarii characterized by a reversible evolution of the Universe, where inhomogeneous expansion and compression modes mutually compensate. In the presence of irreversible processes, such as the dissipation of large-scale compression modes through matter virialization and associated entropy production, the averaged expansion factor becomes dominated by expansion in voids that cannot be compensated anymore by compression in virialized structures. Our approach shows that entropy production due to irreversible processes during the formation of structures plays the same role as an effective, time-dependent cosmological constant, i.e. dynamical dark energy, without the need to invoke new unknown physics., Comment: Accepted in A&A

We examine various physical processes that may explain the shallow high-mass slope of the IMF as well as the low SFR in star-forming molecular clouds (MCs) in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). We show that the strong tidal field and the tidal shear experienced by the CMZ have opposite effects on the collapse of density fluctuations and nearly compensate, but in any case have a negligible impact and can not explain these unusual properties. Similarly, we show that the intense magnetic field in the CMZ provides a negligible pressure support and, for the high densities at play should not modify the probability density function (PDF) of the turbulent gas flow in the clouds, thus affecting negligibly the slope of the IMF. However, we show that, in contrast to MCs in the Galactic disk, the ones in the CMZ experience only one single episode of turbulence injection at large scale, most likely due dominantly to bar gas inflow. Indeed, their rather short lifetime, due to their high mean densities, is similar to one typical turbulence crossing time. Consequently, according to the Hennebelle-Chabrier theory of star formation, within this 'single turbulence episode' scenario, the cloud experiences one single field of turbulence induced density fluctuations, leading eventually to gravitationally unstable prestellar cores. As shown in Hennebelle & Chabrier (2013}, this yields a flatter IMF than usual and leads to the correct observed slope for the CMZ star-forming clouds. Similarly, this single large scale turbulence event within the cloud lifetime yields a 5 to 6 lower SFR than under usual MW cloud conditions, again in agreement with the observed values. Therefore, we suggest that this 'single large scale turbulence injection' episode can explain both the shallow IMF high-mass slope and low SFR of clouds in the CMZ., Comment: To appear in ApJ

Understanding the discrepancy between the radii of observed hot Jupiters and standard 'radiative-convective' models remains a hotly debated topic in the exoplanet community. One mechanism which has been proposed to bridge this gap, and which has recently come under scrutiny, is the vertical advection of potential temperature from the irradiated outer atmosphere deep into the interior, heating the deep, unirradiated, atmosphere, warming the internal adiabat, and resulting in radius inflation. Specifically, a recent study which explored the atmosphere of WASP-76b using a 3D, non-grey, GCM suggested that their models lacked radius inflation, and hence any vertical enthalpy advection. Here we perform additional analysis of these, and related, models, focusing on an explicit analysis of vertical enthalpy transport and the resulting heating of the deep atmosphere compared with 1D models. Our results indicate that, after any evolution linked with initialisation, all the WASP-76b models considered here exhibit significant vertical enthalpy transport, heating the deep atmosphere significantly when compared with standard 1D models. Furthermore, comparison of a long time-scale (and hence near steady-state) model with a Jupiter-like internal-structure model suggests not only strong radius-inflation, but also that the model radius, $1.98 \mathrm{R_{J}}$, may be comparable with observations ($1.83\pm0.06 \mathrm{R_{J}}$). We thus conclude that the vertical advection of potential temperature alone is enough to explain the radius inflation of WASP-76b, and potentially other irradiated gas giants, albeit with the proviso that the exact strength of the vertical advection remains sensitive to model parameters, such as the inclusion of deep atmospheric drag., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use recent microlensing observations toward the central bulge of the Galaxy to probe the overall stellar plus brown dwarf initial mass function (IMF) in these regions well within the brown dwarf domain. We find that the IMF is consistent with the same Chabrier (2005) IMF characteristic of the Galactic disk. In contrast, other IMFs suggested in the literature overpredict the number of short-time events, thus of very-low mass stars and brown dwarfs, compared with observations. This, again, supports the suggestion that brown dwarfs and stars form predominantly via the same mechanism. We show that claims for different IMFs in the stellar and substellar domains rather arise from an incorrect parameterization of the IMF. Furthermore, we show that the IMF in the central regions of the bulge seems to be bottom-heavy, as illustrated by the large number of short-time events compared with the other regions. This recalls our previous analysis of the IMF in massive early type galaxies and suggests the same kind of two-phase formation scenario, with the central bulge initially formed under more violent, burst-like conditions than the rest of the Galaxy., Comment: To appear in ApJ Letters

We have explored the impact of the latest equation of state (EOS) for dense hydrogen-helium mixtures (Chabrier \& Debras 2021), which takes into account the interactions between hydrogen and helium species, upon the evolution of very low mass stars and brown dwarfs (BD). These interactions modify the thermodynamic properties of the H/He mixture, notably the entropy, a quantity of prime importance for these fully convective bodies, but also the onset and the development of degeneracy throughout the body. This translates into a faster cooling rate, i.e. cooler isentropes for a given mass and age, and thus larger brown dwarf masses and smaller radii for given effective temperature and luminosity than the models based on previous EOSs. This means that objects of a given mass and age, in the range $M\lesssim 0.1\,\msol$, $\tau\gtrsim 10^8$ yr, will have cooler effective temperatures and fainter luminosities. Confronting these new models with several observationally determined BD dynamical masses, we show that this improves the agreement between evolutionary models and observations and resolves at least part of the observed discrepancies between the properties of dynamical mass determinations and evolutionary models. A noticeable consequence of this improvement of the dense H/He EOS is that it yields a larger H-burning minimum mass, now found to be $0.075\,\msol$ ($78.5\,\mjup$) with the ATMO atmosphere models for solar metallicity. In the first article of this series, we have used the ergodic theory to assess the validity of a statistical approach to characterize various properties of star-forming molecular clouds (MCs) from a limited number of observations or simulations. This allows the proper determination of confidence intervals for various volumetric averages of statistical quantities obtained form observations or numerical simulations. In this joint paper, we apply the same formalism to a different kind of (observational or numerical) study of MCs. Indeed, as observations cannot fully unravel the complexity of the inner density structure of star forming clouds, it is important to know whether global observable estimates, such as the total mass and size of the cloud, can give an accurate estimation of various key physical quantities that characterize the dynamics of the cloud. Of prime importance is the correct determination of the total gravitational (binding) energy and virial parameter of a cloud. We show that, whereas for clouds that are not in a too advanced stage of star formation, such as Polaris or Orion B, the knowledge of only their mass and size is sufficient to yield an accurate determination of the aforementioned quantities from observations (i.e. in real space). In contrast, we show that this is no longer true for numerical simulations in a periodic box. We derive a relationship for the ratio of the virial parameter in these two respective cases., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The proper characterization of the general statistical behavior of these fluctuations, from a limited sample of observations or simulations, is of prime importance to understand the process of star formation. In this article, we use the ergodic theory for any random field of fluctuations, as commonly used in statistical physics, to derive rigorous statistical results. We outline how to evaluate the autocovariance function (ACF) and the characteristic correlation length of these fluctuations. We then apply this statistical approach to astrophysical systems characterized by a field of density fluctuations, notably star-forming clouds. When it is difficult to determine the correlation length from the empirical ACF, we show alternative ways to estimate the correlation length. We show that the statistics of the column-density field is hampered by biases introduced by integration effects along the line of sight and we explain how to reduce these biases. The statistics of the probability density function (PDF) ergodic estimator also yields the derivation of the proper statistical error bars. We provide a method that can be used by observers and numerical simulation specialists to determine the latter. We show that they (i) cannot be derived from simple Poisson statistics and (ii) become increasingly large for increasing density contrasts, severely hampering the accuracy of the low and high end part of the PDF because of a sample size that is too small. As templates of various stages of star formation in MCs, we then examine the case of the Polaris and Orion B clouds in detail. We calculate, from the observations, the ACF and the correlation length in these clouds and show that the latter is on the order of $\sim$1\% of the size of the cloud., Comment: Accepted for publications in A&A

In this Letter, we study the evolution of the autocovariance function (ACF) of density field fluctuations in star-forming clouds and thus of the correlation length $l_c(\rho)$ of these fluctuations, which can be identified as the average size of the most correlated structures within the cloud. Generalizing the transport equation derived by Chandrasekhar (1951) for static, homogeneous turbulence, we show that the mass contained within these structures is an invariant, i.e. that the average mass contained in the most correlated structures remains constant during the evolution of the cloud, whatever dominates the global dynamics (gravity or turbulence). We show that the growing impact of gravity on the turbulent flow yields an increase of the variance of the density fluctuations and thus a drastic decrease of the correlation length. Theoretical relations are successfully compared to numerical simulations. This picture brings a robust support to star formation paradigms where the mass concentration in turbulent star-forming clouds evolves from initially large, weakly correlated filamentary structures to smaller, denser more correlated ones, and eventually to small, tightly correlated prestellar cores. We stress that the present results rely on a pure statistical approach of density fluctuations and do not involve any specific condition for the formation of prestellar cores. Interestingly enough, we show that, under average conditions typical of Milky Way molecular clouds, this invariant average mass is about a solar mass, providing an appealing explanation for the apparent universality of the IMF under such environments., Comment: Accepted for publications in APJ Letters

Inspired by the statistical mechanics of an ensemble of interacting particles (BBGKY hierarchy), we propose to account for small-scale inhomogeneities in self-gravitating astrophysical fluids by deriving a non-ideal Virial theorem and non-ideal Navier-Stokes equations using a decomposition of the gravitational force into a near- and far-field component. These equations involve the pair radial distribution function (similar to the two-point correlation function), similarly to the interaction energy and equation of state in liquids. Small-scale correlations lead to a non-ideal amplification of the gravitational interaction energy, whose omission leads to a missing mass problem, e.g., in galaxies and galaxy clusters. We also propose an extension of the Friedmann equations in the non-ideal regime. We estimate the non-ideal amplification factor of the gravitational interaction energy of the baryons to lie between 5 and 20, potentially explaining the observed value of the Hubble parameter. Within this framework, the acceleration of the expansion emerges naturally because of the increasing number of sub-structures induced by gravitational collapse, which increases their contribution to the total gravitational energy. A simple estimate predicts a non-ideal deceleration parameter qni~-1;this is potentially the first determination of the observed value based on an intuitively physical argument. We suggest that correlations and gravitational interactions could produce a transition to a viscous regime that can lead to flat rotation curves. This transition could also explain the dichotomy between (Keplerian) LSB elliptical galaxy and (non-Keplerian) spiral galaxy rotation profiles. Overall, our results demonstrate that non-ideal effects induced by inhomogeneities must be taken into account in order to properly determine the gravitational dynamics of galaxies and the larger scale universe., Comment: Accepted in A&A

In a recent paper (Chabrier et al. 2019), we have derived a new equation of state (EOS) for dense hydrogen/helium mixtures which covers the temperature-density domain from solar-type stars to brown dwarfs and gaseous planets. This EOS is based on the so-called additive volume law and thus does not take into account the interactions between the hydrogen and helium species. In the present paper, we go beyond these calculations by taking into account H/He interactions, derived from quantum molecular dynamics simulations. These interactions, which eventually lead to H/He phase separation, become important at low temperature and high density, in the domain of brown dwarfs and giant planets. Over the past two decades, recommender systems have attracted a lot of interest due to the explosion in the amount of data in online applications. A particular attention has been paid to collaborative filtering, which is the most widely used in applications that involve information recommendations. Collaborative filtering (CF) uses the known preference of a group of users to make predictions and recommendations about the unknown preferences of other users (recommendations are made based on the past behavior of users). First introduced in the 1990s, a wide variety of increasingly successful models have been proposed. Due to the success of machine learning techniques in many areas, there has been a growing emphasis on the application of such algorithms in recommendation systems. In this article, we present an overview of the CF approaches for recommender systems, their two main categories, and their evaluation metrics. We focus on the application of classical Machine Learning algorithms to CF recommender systems by presenting their evolution from their first use-cases to advanced Machine Learning models. We attempt to provide a comprehensive and comparative overview of CF systems (with python implementations) that can serve as a guideline for research and practice in this area., Comment: 29 pages, 7 tables and 2 figures

Interior models of giant planets traditionally assume that at a given radius (i.e. pressure) the density should be larger than or equal to the one corresponding to a homogeneous, adiabatic stratification throughout the planet (referred to as the 'outer adiabat'). The observations of Jupiter's gravity field by Juno combined with the constraints on its atmospheric composition appear to be incompatible with such a profile. In this letter, we show that the above assumption stems from an incorrect understanding of the Schwarzschild-Ledoux criterion, which is only valid on a local scale. In order to fulfil the buoyancy stability condition, the density gradient with pressure in a non-adiabatic region must indeed rise more steeply than the {\it local} adiabatic density gradient. However, the density gradient can be smaller than the one corresponding to the outer adiabat at the same pressure because of the higher temperature in an inhomogeneously stratified medium. Deep enough, the density can therefore be lower than the one corresponding to the outer adiabat. We show that this is permitted only if the slope of the local adiabat becomes shallower than the slope of the outer adiabat at the same pressure, as found in recent Jupiter models due to the increase of both specific entropy and adiabatic index with depth. We examine the dynamical stability of this structure and show that it is stable against non-adiabatic perturbations. The possibility of such unconventional density profile in Jupiter complicates further our understanding of the internal structure and evolution of (extrasolar) giant planets., Comment: Accepted in ApJL

High-throughput data collection techniques and largescale (cloud) computing are transforming our understanding of ecosystems at all scales by allowing the integration of multimodal data such as physics, chemistry, biology, ecology, fishing, economics and other social sciences in a common computational framework. We focus in this paper on a large scale data assimilation and prediction backbone based on Deep Stacking Networks (DSN) in the frame of the IDEA (Island Digital Ecosystem Avatars) project (Moorea Island), based on the subdivision of the island in watersheds and lagoon units. We study the effect of physics input on thermal evolution of neutron stars in soft X-ray transients (SXTs). In particular, we consider different modern models of the sources of deep crustal heating during accretion episodes and the effects brought about by impurities embedded in the crust during its formation. We simulate thermal structure and evolution of episodically accreting neutron stars under different assumptions on the crust composition and on the distribution of heat sources and impurities. For the nonaccreted crust, we consider the nuclear charge fluctuations that arise at crust formation. For the accreted crust, we compare different theoretical models of composition and internal heating. We also compare results of numerical simulations with observations of the crust cooling in SXT MXB 1659-29. We found that the nonaccreted part of the inner crust of a neutron star can have a layered structure, with almost pure crystalline layers interchanging with layers composed of mixtures of different nuclei. The latter layers have relatively low thermal conductivities, which affects thermal evolution of the transients. The impurity distribution in the crust strongly depends on the models of the dense matter and the crust formation scenario. In spite of decades of theoretical efforts, the physical origin of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is still debated. Particularly crucial is the question of what sets the peak of the distribution. To investigate this issue we perform high resolution numerical simulations with radiative feedback exploring in particular the role of the stellar and accretion luminosities. We also perform simulations with a simple effective equation of state (eos) and we investigate 1000 solar mass clumps having respectively 0.1 and 0.4 pc of initial radii. We found that most runs, both with radiative transfer or an eos, present similar mass spectra with a peak broadly located around 0.3-0.5 M$_\odot$ and a powerlaw-like mass distribution at higher masses. However, when accretion luminosity is accounted for, the resulting mass spectrum of the most compact clump tends to be moderately top-heavy. The effect remains limited for the less compact one, which overall remains colder. Our results support the idea that rather than the radiative stellar feedback, this is the transition from the isothermal to the adiabatic regime, which occurs at a gas density of about 10$^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$, that is responsible for setting the peak of the initial mass function. This stems for the fact that $i)$ extremely compact clumps for which the accretion luminosity has a significant influence are very rare and $ii)$ because of the luminosity problem, which indicates that the effective accretion luminosity is likely weaker than expected., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

We derive an analytical theory of the PDF of density fluctuations in supersonic turbulence in the presence of gravity in star-forming clouds. The theory is based on a rigorous derivation of a combination of the Navier-Stokes continuity equations for the fluid motions and the Poisson equation for the gravity. It extends upon previous approaches first by including gravity, second by considering the PDF as a dynamical system, not a stationary one. We derive the transport equations of the density PDF, characterize its evolution and determine the density threshold above which gravity strongly affects and eventually dominates the dynamics of turbulence. We demonstrate the occurence of {\it two} power law tails in the PDF, with two characteristic exponents, corresponding to two different stages in the balance between turbulence and gravity. Another important result of this study is to provide a procedure to relate the observed {\it column density} PDFs to the corresponding {\it volume density} PDFs. This allows to infer, from the observation of column-densities, various physical parameters characterizing molecular clouds, notably the virial parameter. Furthermore, the theory offers the possibility to date the clouds in units of ${t}_{\rm coll}$, the time since a statistically significant fraction of the cloud started to collapse. The theoretical results and diagnostics reproduce very well numerical simulations and observations of star-forming clouds. The theory provides a sound theoretical foundation and quantitative diagnostics to analyze observations or numerical simulations of star-forming regions and to characterize the evolution of the density PDF in various regions of molecular clouds., Comment: Accepted for publications in APJ Letters

Through the magnetic braking and the launching of protostellar outflows, magnetic fields play a major role in the regulation of angular momentum in star formation, which directly impacts the formation and evolution of protoplanetary disks and binary systems. The aim of this paper is to quantify those phenomena in the presence of non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics effects, namely the Ohmic and ambipola r diffusion. We perform three-dimensional simulations of protostellar collapses varying the mass of the prestellar dense core, the thermal support (the $\alpha$ ratio) and the dust grain size-distribu tion. The mass mostly influences the magnetic braking in the pseudo-disk, while the thermal support impacts the accretion rate and hence the properties of the disk. Removing the grains smaller than 0. 1 $\mu$m in the Mathis, Rumpl, Nordsieck (MRN) distribution enhances the ambipolar diffusion coefficient. Similarly to previous studies, we find that this change in the distribution reduces the magnet ic braking with an impact on the disk. The outflow is also significantly weakened. In either case, the magnetic braking largely dominates the outflow as a process to remove the angular momentum from t he disk. Finally, we report a large ionic precursor to the outflow with velocities of several km s$^{-1}$, which may be observable., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, Accepted in ApJ

We present new parallax measurements from the CFHT Infrared Parallax Program and the Pan-STARRS 3$\pi$ Steradian Survey for the young ($\approx150-300$ Myr) triple system VHS J125601.92$-$125723.9. This system is composed of a nearly equal-flux binary ("AB") and a wide, possibly planetary-mass companion ("b"). The system's published parallactic distance ($12.7\pm1.0$ pc) implies absolute magnitudes unusually faint compared to known young objects and is in tension with the spectrophotometric distance for the central binary ($17.2\pm2.6$ pc). Our CFHT and Pan-STARRS parallaxes are consistent, and the more precise CFHT result places VHS J1256-1257 at $22.2^{+1.1}_{-1.2}$ pc. Our new distance results in higher values for the companion's mass ($19\pm5$ M$_{\rm Jup}$) and temperature ($1240\pm50$ K), and also brings the absolute magnitudes of all three components into better agreement with known young objects., Comment: Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society, in press. We present a new set of solar metallicity atmosphere and evolutionary models for very cool brown dwarfs and self-luminous giant exoplanets, which we term ATMO 2020. Atmosphere models are generated with our state-of-the-art 1D radiative-convective equilibrium code ATMO, and are used as surface boundary conditions to calculate the interior structure and evolution of $0.001-0.075\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ objects. Our models include several key improvements to the input physics used in previous models available in the literature. Most notably, the use of a new H-He equation of state including ab initio quantum molecular dynamics calculations has raised the mass by $\sim1-2\%$ at the stellar-substellar boundary and has altered the cooling tracks around the hydrogen and deuterium burning minimum masses. A second key improvement concerns updated molecular opacities in our atmosphere model ATMO, which now contains significantly more line transitions required to accurately capture the opacity in these hot atmospheres. This leads to warmer atmospheric temperature structures, further changing the cooling curves and predicted emission spectra of substellar objects. We present significant improvement for the treatment of the collisionally broadened potassium resonance doublet, and highlight the importance of these lines in shaping the red-optical and near-infrared spectrum of brown dwarfs. We generate three different grids of model simulations, one using equilibrium chemistry and two using non-equilibrium chemistry due to vertical mixing, all three computed self-consistently with the pressure-temperature structure of the atmosphere. We show the impact of vertical mixing on emission spectra and in colour-magnitude diagrams, highlighting how the $3.5-5.5\,\mathrm{\mu m}$ flux window can be used to calibrate vertical mixing in cool T-Y spectral type objects., Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures, 1 table. Context: The anomalously large radii of hot Jupiters has long been a mystery. However, by combining both theoretical arguments and 2D models, a recent study has suggested that the vertical advection of potential temperature leads to an adiabatic temperature profile in the deep atmosphere hotter than the profile obtained with standard 1D models. Aims: In order to confirm the viability of that scenario, we extend this investigation to three dimensional, time-dependent, models. Methods: We use a 3D GCM, DYNAMICO to perform a series of calculations designed to explore the formation and structure of the driving atmospheric circulations, and detail how it responds to changes in both upper and deep atmospheric forcing. Results: In agreement with the previous, 2D, study, we find that a hot adiabat is the natural outcome of the long-term evolution of the deep atmosphere. Integration times of order $1500$ years are needed for that adiabat to emerge from an isothermal atmosphere, explaining why it has not been found in previous hot Jupiter studies. Models initialised from a hotter deep atmosphere tend to evolve faster toward the same final state. We also find that the deep adiabat is stable against low-levels of deep heating and cooling, as long as the Newtonian cooling time-scale is longer than $\sim 3000$ years at $200$ bar. Conclusions: We conclude that the steady-state vertical advection of potential temperature by deep atmospheric circulations constitutes a robust mechanism to explain hot Jupiter inflated radii. We suggest that future studies of hot Jupiters are evolved for a longer time than currently done, and, when possible, include models initialised with a hot deep adiabat. We present here a minor modification of our numerical implementation of the Hall effect for the 2D Riemann solver used in Constrained Transport schemes, as described in Marchand et al. (2018). In the previous work, the tests showed that the angular momentum was not conserved during protostellar collapse simulations, with significant impact. By removing the whistler waves speed from the characteristic speeds of non-magnetic variables in the 1D Riemann solver, we are able to improve the angular momentum conservation in our test-case by one order of magnitude, while keeping the second-order numerical convergence of the scheme. We also reproduce the simulations of Tsukamoto et al. (2015) with consistent resistivities, the three non-ideal MHD effects and initial rotation, and agree with their results. The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is playing a critical role in the history of our universe. We propose a theory that is based solely on local processes, namely the dust opacity limit, the tidal forces and the properties of the collapsing gas envelope. The idea is that the final mass of the central object is determined by the location of the nearest fragments, which accrete the gas located further away, preventing it to fall onto the central object. To estimate the relevant statistics in the neighbourhood of an accreting protostar, we perform high resolution numerical simulations. We also use these simulations to further test the idea that fragmentation in the vicinity of an existing protostar is determinant in setting the peak of the stellar mass spectrum. We develop an analytical model, which is based on a statistical counting of the turbulent density fluctuations, generated during the collapse, that are at least equal to the mass of the first hydrostatic core, and sufficiently important to supersede tidal and pressure forces to be self-gravitating. The analytical mass function presents a peak located at roughly 10 times the mass of the first hydrostatic core in good agreement with the numerical simulations. Since the physical processes involved are all local, i.e. occurs at scales of a few 100 AU or below, and do not depend on the gas distribution at large scale and global properties such as the mean Jeans mass, the mass spectrum is expected to be relatively universal., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

We present individual dynamical masses for the nearby M9.5+T5.5 binary WISE J072003.20$-$084651.2AB, a.k.a. Scholz's star. Combining high-precision CFHT/WIRCam photocenter astrometry and Keck adaptive optics resolved imaging, we measure the first high-quality parallactic distance ($6.80_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$ pc) and orbit ($8.06_{-0.25}^{+0.24}$ yr period) for this system composed of a low-mass star and brown dwarf. We find a moderately eccentric orbit ($e = 0.240_{-0.010}^{+0.009}$), incompatible with previous work based on less data, and dynamical masses of $99\pm6$ $M_{\rm Jup}$ and $66\pm4$ $M_{\rm Jup}$ for the two components. The primary mass is marginally inconsistent (2.1$\sigma$) with the empirical mass$-$magnitude$-$metallicity relation and models of main-sequence stars. The relatively high mass of the cold ($T_{\rm eff} = 1250\pm40$ K) brown dwarf companion indicates an age older than a few Gyr, in accord with age estimates for the primary star, and is consistent with our recent estimate of $\approx$70 $M_{\rm Jup}$ for the stellar/substellar boundary among the field population. Our improved parallax and proper motion, as well as an orbit-corrected system velocity, improve the accuracy of the system's close encounter with the solar system by an order of magnitude. WISE J0720$-$0846AB passed within $68.7\pm2.0$ kAU of the Sun $80.5\pm0.7$ kyr ago, passing through the outer Oort cloud where comets can have stable orbits., Comment: accepted to AJ

We study long-term thermal evolution of neutron stars in soft X-ray transients (SXTs), taking the deep crustal heating into account consistently with the changes of the composition of the crust. We collect observational estimates of average accretion rates and thermal luminosities of such neutron stars and compare the theory with observations. We perform simulations of thermal evolution of accreting neutron stars, considering the gradual replacement of the original nonaccreted crust by the reprocessed accreted matter, the neutrino and photon energy losses, and the deep crustal heating due to nuclear reactions in the accreted crust. We test and compare results for different modern theoretical models. We update a compilation of the observational estimates of the thermal luminosities in quiescence and average accretion rates in the SXTs and compare the observational estimates with the theoretical results. Long-term thermal evolution of transiently accreting neutron stars is nonmonotonic. The quasi-equilibrium temperature in quiescence reaches a minimum and then increases toward the final steady state. The quasi-equilibrium thermal luminosity of a neutron star in an SXT can be substantially lower at the minimum than in the final state. This enlarges the range of possibilities for theoretical interpretation of observations of such neutron stars. The updates of the theory and observations leave unchanged the previous conclusions that the direct Urca process operates in relatively cold neutron stars and that an accreted heat-blanketing envelope is likely present in relatively hot neutron stars in the SXTs in quiescence. By generalizing the theory of convection to any type of thermal and compositional source terms (diabatic processes), we show that thermohaline convection in Earth oceans, fingering convection in stellar atmospheres, and moist convection in Earth atmosphere are deriving from the same general diabatic convective instability. We show also that "radiative convection" triggered by CO/CH4 transition with radiative transfer in the atmospheres of brown dwarfs is analog to moist and thermohaline convection. We derive a generalization of the mixing length theory to include the effect of source terms in 1D codes. We show that CO/CH4 radiative convection could significantly reduce the temperature gradient in the atmospheres of brown dwarfs similarly to moist convection in Earth atmosphere thus possibly explaining the reddening in brown-dwarf spectra. By using idealized two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations in the Ledoux unstable regime, we show that compositional source terms can indeed provoke a reduction of the temperature gradient. The L/T transition could be explained by a bifurcation between the adiabatic and diabatic convective transports and could be seen as a giant cooling crisis: an analog of the boiling crisis in liquid/steam-water convective flows. This mechanism with other chemical transitions could be present in many giant and earth-like exoplanets. The study of the impact of different parameters (effective temperature, compositional changes) on CO/CH4 radiative convection and the analogy with Earth moist and thermohaline convection is opening the possibility to use brown dwarfs to better understand some aspects of the physics at play in the climate of our own planet., Comment: accepted in ApJ

We present a new equation of state (EOS) for dense hydrogen/helium mixtures which covers a range of densities from $10^{-8}$ to $10^6$ g.cm$^{-3}$, pressures from $10^{-9}$ to $10^{13}$ GPa and temperatures from $10^{2}$ to $10^{8}$ K. The calculations combine the EOS of Saumon, Chabrier & vanHorn (1995) in the low density, low temperature molecular/atomic domain, the EOS of Chabrier & Potekhin (1998) in the high-density, high-temperature fully ionized domain, the limits of which differ for H and He, and ab initio quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) calculations in the intermediate density and temperature regime, characteristic of pressure dissociation and ionization. The EOS for the H/He mixture is based on the so-called additive volume law and thus does not take into account the interactions between the two species. A major improvement of the present calculations over existing ones is that we calculate the entropy over the entire density-temperature domain, a necessary quantity for stellar or planetary evolution calculations. The EOS results are compared with existing experimental data, namely Hugoniot shock experiments for pure H and He, and with first principle numerical simulations for both the single elements and the mixture. This new EOS covers a wide range of physical and astrophysical conditions, from jovian planets to solar-type stars, and recovers the existing relativistic EOS at very high densities, in the domains of white dwarfs and neutron stars., Comment: To appear in Astrophysical Journal. Observations of Jupiter's gravity field by Juno have revealed surprisingly small values for the high order gravitational moments, considering the abundances of heavy elements measured by Galileo 20 years ago. The derivation of recent equations of state for hydrogen and helium, much denser in the Mbar region, worsen the conflict between these two observations. In order to circumvent this puzzle, current Jupiter model studies either ignore the constraint from Galileo or invoke an ad hoc modification of the equations of state. In this paper, we derive Jupiter models which satisfy both Juno and Galileo constraints. We confirm that Jupiter's structure must encompass at least four different regions: an outer convective envelope, a region of compositional, thus entropy change, an inner convective envelope and an extended diluted core enriched in heavy elements, and potentially a central compact core. We show that, in order to reproduce Juno and Galileo observations, one needs a significant entropy increase between the outer and inner envelopes and a smaller density than for an isentropic profile, associated with some external differential rotation. The best way to fulfill this latter condition is an inward decreasing abundance of heavy elements in this region. We examine in details the three physical mechanisms able to yield such a change of entropy and composition: a first order molecular-metallic hydrogen transition, immiscibility between hydrogen and helium or a region of layered convection. Given our present knowledge of hydrogen pressure ionization, combination of the two latter mechanisms seems to be the most favoured solution.
