Covert communication in wireless networks ensures that transmissions remain undetectable to adversaries, making it a potential enabler for privacy and security in sensitive applications. However, to meet the high performance and connectivity demands of sixth-generation (6G) networks, future wireless systems will require larger antenna arrays, higher operating frequencies, and advanced antenna architectures. This shift changes the propagation model from far-field planar-wave to near-field spherical-wave which necessitates a redesign of existing covert communication systems. Unlike far-field beamforming, which relies only on direction, near-field beamforming depends on both distance and direction, providing additional degrees of freedom for system design. In this paper, we aim to utilize those freedoms by proposing near-field Frequency Diverse Array (FDA)-based transmission strategies that manipulate the beampattern in both distance and angle, thereby establishing a non-covert region around the legitimate user. Our approach takes advantage of near-field properties and FDA technology to significantly reduce the area vulnerable to detection by adversaries while maintaining covert communication with the legitimate receiver. Numerical simulations show that our methods outperform conventional phased arrays by shrinking the non-covert region and allowing the covert region to expand as the number of antennas increases.

Next-generation mobile networks require evolved radio access network (RAN) architectures to meet the demands of high capacity, massive connectivity, reduced costs, and energy efficiency, and to realize communication with ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability. {Meeting such} requirements for both mobile users and vertical industries in the next decade {requires novel solutions. One of the potential solutions that attracted significant research attention in the past 15 years} is to redesign the radio access network (RAN). In this survey, we present a comprehensive survey on distributed antenna system (DAS) architectures that address these challenges and improve network performance. We cover the transition from traditional decentralized RAN to DAS, including cloud radio-access networks (C-RAN), fog radio-access networks (F-RAN), virtualized radio-access networks (V-RAN), cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO), and {the most recent advances manifested in} open radio-access network (O-RAN). In the process, we discuss the benefits and limitations of these architectures, including the impact of limited-capacity fronthaul links, various cooperative uplink and downlink coding strategies, cross-layer optimization, and techniques to optimize the performance of DAS. Moreover, we review key enabling technologies for next-generation RAN systems, such as multi-access edge computing, network function virtualization, software-defined networking, and network slicing; in addition to some crucial radio access technologies, such as millimeter wave, massive multi-input multi-output, device-to-device communication, and massive machine-type communication. Key generation, a pillar in physical-layer security (PLS), is the process of the exchanging signals from two legitimate users (Alice and Bob) to extract a common key from the random, common channels. The drawback of extracting keys from wireless channels is the ample dependence on the dynamicity and fluctuations of the radio channel, rendering the key vulnerable to estimation by Eve (an illegitimate user) in low-entropy environments because of insufficient randomness. Added to that, the lack of channel fluctuations lower the secret key rate (SKR) defined as the number of bits of key generated per channel use. In this work, we aim to address this challenge by using a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to produce random phases at certain, carefully curated intervals such that it disrupts the channel in low-entropy environments. We propose an RIS assisted key generation protocol, study its performance, and compare with benchmarks to observe the benefit of using an RIS while considering various important metrics such as key mismatch rate and secret key throughput. Furthermore, we characterize a scaling law as a function of the rate of change of RIS phase switching for the average secret information rate under this protocol. Then, we use both the key throughput and information rate to optimize the overall secrecy rate. A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is an essential component in the architecture of the next generation of wireless communication systems. An RIS is deployed to provide a controllability to the multi-path environment between the transmitter and the receiver, which becomes critical when the line-of-sight signal between them is blocked. In this work, we design an electrically tunable linearly polarized RIS at 2.5 GHz that yields a controllable reflection phase and phase-frequency slope; in other words, we add tunability of the phase-frequency slope to the tunability of the resonance center frequency. The proposed design consists of two layers of unit cells placed over a ground plane, with dog-bone-shaped elements in the top layer and patch elements in the bottom layer. Next-generation communication networks are expected to exploit recent advances in data science and cutting-edge communications technologies to improve the utilization of the available communications resources. In this article, we introduce an emerging deep learning (DL) architecture, the transformer-masked autoencoder (TMAE), and discuss its potential in next-generation wireless networks. We discuss the limitations of current DL techniques in meeting the requirements of 5G and beyond 5G networks, and how the TMAE differs from the classical DL techniques can potentially address several wireless communication problems. We highlight various areas in next-generation mobile networks which can be addressed using a TMAE, including source and channel coding, estimation, and security. Furthermore, we demonstrate a case study showing how a TMAE can improve data compression performance and complexity compared to existing schemes. This work studies a multi-cell one-bit massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that employs one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converters (DACs) at each base station (BS). We utilize Bussgang decomposition to derive downlink signal-to-quantization-plus-interference-plus-noise ratio (SQINR) and ergodic achievable rate expressions under one-bit quantized maximum ratio transmission (MRT) and zero-forcing (ZF) precoding schemes considering scenarios with and without pilot contamination (PC) in the derived channel estimates. The results are also simplified for the mixed architecture that employs full resolution (FR) ADCs and one-bit DACs, and the conventional architecture that employs FR ADCs and DACs. The SQINR is shown to decrease by a factor of $2/\pi$ and $4/\pi^2$ in the one-bit setting compared to that achieved in the mixed setting and conventional setting respectively under MRT precoding without PC. Interestingly, the decrease in SQINR is less when we consider PC, which is shown to adversely impact the conventional system more than the one-bit system. Similar insights are obtained under ZF precoding with the decrease in the SQINR with the use of one-bit ADCs and DACs being more pronounced. With the expected proliferation of delay constrained applications, future communication technologies are pushed towards using short codes. The performance using short codes cannot be inferred through classical channel capacity analysis, which intrinsically assumes long codes and vanishing frame error rate (FER). This paper studies the performance of an uplink large-scale network in the finite blocklength regime. Bounds on the spatially averaged rate outage probability as well as the coding rate meta distribution are derived. Stacked intelligent metasurface (SIM) is an emerging programmable metasurface architecture that can implement signal processing directly in the electromagnetic wave domain, thereby enabling efficient implementation of ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transceivers with a limited number of radio frequency (RF) chains. Channel estimation (CE) is challenging for SIM-enabled communication systems due to the multi-layer architecture of SIM, and because we need to estimate large dimensional channels between the SIM and users with a limited number of RF chains. To efficiently solve this problem, we develop a novel hybrid digital-wave domain channel estimator, in which the received training symbols are first processed in the wave domain within the SIM layers, and then processed in the digital domain. The wave domain channel estimator, parametrized by the phase shifts applied by the meta-atoms in all layers, is optimized to minimize the mean squared error (MSE) using a gradient descent algorithm, within which the digital part is optimally updated. For an SIM-enabled multi-user system equipped with 4 RF chains and a 6-layer SIM with 64 meta-atoms each, the proposed estimator yields an MSE that is very close to that achieved by fully digital CE in a massive MIMO system employing 64 RF chains. This high CE accuracy is achieved at the cost of a training overhead that can be reduced by exploiting the potential low rank of channel correlation matrices.

The reflection characteristics of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) depend on the phase response of the constituent unit cells, which is necessarily frequency dependent. This paper investigates the role of an RIS constituting unit cells with different phase-frequency profiles in a wide-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system to improve the achievable rate. We first propose a mathematical model for the phase-frequency relationship parametrized by the phase-frequency profile's slope and phase-shift corresponding to a realizable resonant RIS unit cell. Then, modelling each RIS element with $b$ control bits, we propose a method for selecting the parameter pairs to obtain a set of $2^b$ phase-frequency profiles. The proposed method yields an RIS design that outperforms existing designs over a wide range of user locations in a single-input, single-output (SISO) OFDM system. We then propose a low-complexity optimization algorithm to maximize the data rate through the joint optimization of (a) power allocations across the sub-carriers and (b) phase-frequency profile for each RIS unit cell from the available set. The analysis is then extended to a multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) OFDM scenario. Numerical results show an improvement in the coverage and achievable rates under the proposed framework as compared to single-slope phase-frequency profiles.

Physical layer security (PLS) is superior to classical cryptography techniques due to its notion of perfect secrecy and independence to an eavesdropper's computational power. One form of PLS arises when Alice and Bob (the legitimate users) exchange signals to extract a common key from the random common channels. The drawback of extracting keys from wireless channels is the ample dependence on the dynamicity and fluctuations of the radio channel. However, some radio channels are constant such as line of sight (LoS) and can be estimated by Eve (an illegitimate user), or can be quite static in behaviour due to the presence low-mobility users thus restricting the amount of randomness. This work studies the net sum-rate performance of a distributed reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs)-assisted multi-user multiple-input-single-output (MISO) downlink communication system under imperfect instantaneous-channel state information (I-CSI) to implement precoding at the base station (BS) and statistical-CSI (S-CSI) to design the RISs phase-shifts. Two channel estimation (CE) protocols are considered for I-CSI acquisition: (i) a full CE protocol that estimates all direct and RISs-assisted channels over multiple training sub-phases, and (ii) a low-overhead direct estimation (DE) protocol that estimates the end-to-end channel in a single sub-phase. We derive the asymptotic equivalents of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and ergodic net sum-rate under both protocols for given RISs phase-shifts, which are then optimized based on S-CSI. Simulation results reveal that the low-complexity DE protocol yields better net sum-rate than the full CE protocol when used to obtain CSI for precoding. A benchmark full I-CSI based RISs design is also outlined and shown to yield higher SINR but lower net sum-rate than the S-CSI based RISs design.

The development of delay-sensitive applications that require ultra high reliability created an additional challenge for wireless networks. This led to Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications, as a use case that 5G and beyond 5G systems must support. However, supporting low latency communications requires the use of short codes, while attaining vanishing frame error probability (FEP) requires long codes. Thus, developing codes for the finite blocklength regime (FBR) achieving certain reliability requirements is necessary. This paper investigates the potential of Convolutional Neural Networks autoencoders (CNN-AE) in approaching the theoretical maximum achievable rate over a Gaussian channel for a range of signal-to-noise ratios at a fixed blocklength and target FEP, which is a different perspective compared to existing works that explore the use of CNNs from bit-error and symbol-error rate perspectives. We explain the studied CNN-AE architecture, evaluate it numerically, and compare it to the theoretical maximum achievable rate and the achievable rates of polar coded quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), Reed-Muller coded QAM, multilevel polar coded modulation, and a TurboAE-MOD scheme from the literature. Some emerging 5G and beyond use-cases impose stringent latency constraints, which necessitates a paradigm shift towards finite blocklength performance analysis. In contrast to Shannon capacity-achieving codes, the codeword length in the finite blocklength regime (FBR) is a critical design parameter that imposes an intricate tradeoff between delay, reliability, and information coding rate. In this context, this paper presents a novel mathematical analysis to characterize the performance of large-scale downlink networks using short codewords. Theoretical achievable rates, outage probability, and reliability expressions are derived using the finite blocklength coding theory in conjunction with stochastic geometry, and compared to the performance in the asymptotic regime (AR). Achievable rates under practical modulation schemes as well as multilevel polar coded modulation (MLPCM) are investigated. Numerical results provide theoretical performance benchmarks, highlight the potential of MLPCM in achieving close to optimal performance with short codewords, and confirm the discrepancy between the performance in the FBR and that predicted by analysis in the AR. The paper provides a new perspective on peak- and average-constrained Gaussian channels. Such channels model optical wireless communication (OWC) systems which employ intensity-modulation with direct detection (IM/DD). First, the paper proposes a new, capacity-preserving vector binary channel (VBC) model, consisting of dependent binary noisy bit-pipes. Then, to simplify coding over this VBC, the paper proposes coding schemes with varying levels of complexity, building on the capacity of binary-symmetric channels (BSC) and channels with state. The achievable rates are compared to capacity and capacity bounds, showing that coding for the BSC with state over the VBC achieves rates close to capacity at moderate to high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), whereas simpler schemes achieve lower rates at lower complexity. The presented coding schemes are realizable using capacity-achieving codes for binary-input channels, such as polar codes. This work investigates the downlink performance of a multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that employs one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converters (DACs) in the receiving and transmitting radio frequency (RF) chains at each base station (BS) in order to reduce the power consumption. We utilize Bussgang decomposition to derive the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) channel estimates at each BS based on the quantized received uplink training signals, and the asymptotic closed-form expressions of the achievable downlink rates under one-bit quantized zero-forcing (ZF) precoding implemented using the estimated channels. The derived expressions explicitly show the impact of quantization noise, thermal noise, pilot contamination, and interference, and are utilized to study the number of additional antennas needed at each BS of the one-bit MIMO system to perform as well as the conventional MIMO system. Numerical results verify our analysis, and reveal that despite needing more antennas to achieve the same sum average rate, the one-bit massive MIMO system is more energy-efficient than the conventional system, especially at high sampling frequencies.

The dirty paper channel (DPC) under a peak amplitude constraint arises in an optical wireless broadcast channel (BC), where the state at one receiver is the transmitted signal intended for the other receiver(s). This paper studies a class of peak-constrained DPC that is applicable to the optical wireless BC, where the channel state (i.e, `dirt') takes values from some evenly-spaced grid. For the discrete-state DPC studied this paper, a capacity upper bound is obtained from its state-free counterpart. To lower bound its capacity, classical dirty paper coding schemes are revisited, including Costa's coding for DPC and Tomlinson-Harashima (TH) precoding, which serves as benchmark schemes. To improve the benchmark performance, two new precoding schemes are proposed for the discrete-state DPC. Although the proposed schemes do not achieve the state-free capacity contrary to what is known about the Costa's DPC, achievable rates within a small gap to the state-free capacity are demonstrated for the discrete-state DPC. Using the proposed precoding scheme in a two-user peak-constrained Gaussian BC, a new capacity inner bound (IB) is obtained, and is shown to outperform the truncated Gaussian (TG) based IB and is comparable to the best-known IB., Comment: Accepted in IEEE WCNC 2023

Communication with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in current terrestrial networks suffers from poor signal strength due to the down-tilt of the access points (APs) that are optimized to serve ground users ends (GUEs). To solve this, one could tilt the AP antenna upwards or allocate more power to serve the UAV. However, this negatively affects GUE downlink (DL) rates. In this paper, we propose to solve this challenge using a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to enhance the UAV communication while preserving the 3GPP- prescribed downwards antenna tilt and potentially improving the DL performance of the GUE. We show that under conjugate beamforming (CB) precoding and proper power split between GUEs and the UAV at the APs, an RIS with phase-shifts configured to reflect radio signals towards the UAV can significantly improve the UAV DL throughput while simultaneously benefiting the GUEs. The presented numerical results show that the RIS- aided system can serve a UAV with a required data rate while improving the GUEs DL performance relative to that in a CF- MIMO system without a UAV and an RIS. We support this conclusion through simulations under a varying numbers of RIS reflecting elements, UAV heights, and power split factor.

In optical wireless communications, a broadcast channel (BC) employing intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) is often modelled as a peak-constrained BC. A closed-form expression for its capacity region of the peak-constrained BC is not known. This paper presents an analytical capacity inner bound for the peak-constrained Gaussian BC achieved by a class of discrete input distribution, specifically, the evenly-spaced discrete uniform distribution (ESDU). In contrast to the continuous input distribution that provides the benchmark, ESDU is more promising in the application of peak-constrained Gaussian channels. The newly obtained capacity inner bound is easily-computable and is numerically shown to be tighter than the benchmark. A continuous goal in all communication systems is to enhance the users experience and provide them with the highest possible data rates. Recently, the concept of cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) systems has been considered to enhance the performance of systems that operate merely with Radio Frequency (RF) or visible light communication (VLC) technologies. In this paper, a hybrid VLC/RF cell-free massive MIMO system is proposed where an RF cell-free network and a VLC cell-free network coexist to serve users. The idea is to utilize the benefits of each network and balance the load aiming at maximizing the system's sum-rate. The system is evaluated using zero-forcing (ZF) precoding scheme. Two user association algorithms are proposed to assign users to either the VLC or the RF networks. In addition, two user-centric clustering approaches are proposed and evaluated. Simulation results show that the proposed association algorithms significantly outperform a random network association of users in terms of sum-rate. This paper studies the capacity of the two-user intensity-modulation/direct-detection (IM/DD) interference channel (IC), which is relevant in the context of multi-user optical wireless communications. Despite some known single-letter capacity characterizations for general discrete-memoryless ICs, a computable capacity expression for the IM/DD IC is missing. In this paper, we provide tight and easily computable inner and outer bounds for a general two-user IM/DD IC under peak and average optical intensity constraints. The bounds enable characterizing the asymptotic sum-rate capacity in the strong and weak interference regimes, as well as the generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) in the symmetric case. Using the obtained bounds, the GDoF of the IM/DD IC is shown to have a `W' shape similar to the Gaussian IC with power constraints. Federated learning (FL) has emerged as a distributed machine learning (ML) technique to train models without sharing users' private data. In this paper, we propose a decentralized FL scheme that is called \underline{f}ederated \underline{l}earning \underline{e}mpowered \underline{o}verlapped \underline{c}lustering for \underline{d}ecentralized aggregation (FL-EOCD). The introduced FL-EOCD leverages device-to-device (D2D) communications and overlapped clustering to enable decentralized aggregation, where a cluster is defined as a coverage zone of a typical device. The devices located on the overlapped clusters are called bridge devices (BDs). In the proposed FL-EOCD scheme, a clustering topology is envisioned where clusters are connected through BDs, so as the aggregated models of each cluster is disseminated to the other clusters in a decentralized manner without the need for a global aggregator or an additional hop of transmission. Unlike the star-based FL, the proposed FL-EOCD scheme involves a large number of local devices by reusing the RRBs in different non-adjacent clusters. To evaluate our proposed FL-EOCD scheme as opposed to baseline FL schemes, we consider minimizing the overall energy-consumption of devices while maintaining the convergence rate of FL subject to its time constraint. To this end, a joint optimization problem, considering scheduling the local devices/BDs to the CHs and computation frequency allocation, is formulated, where an iterative solution to this joint problem is devised. In large scale dynamic wireless networks, the amount of overhead caused by channel estimation (CE) is becoming one of the main performance bottlenecks. This is due to the large number users whose channels should be estimated, the user mobility, and the rapid channel change caused by the usage of the high-frequency spectrum (e.g. millimeter wave). In this work, we propose a new hybrid channel estimation/prediction (CEP) scheme to reduce overhead in time-division duplex (TDD) wireless cell-free massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) systems. The scheme proposes sending a pilot signal from each user only once in a given number (window) of coherence intervals (CIs). Then minimum mean-square error (MMSE) estimation is used to estimate the channel of this CI, while a deep neural network (DNN) is used to predict the channels of the remaining CIs in the window. The DNN exploits the temporal correlation between the consecutive CIs and the received pilot signals to improve the channel prediction accuracy. By doing so, CE overhead is reduced by at least 50 percent at the expense of negligible CE error for practical user mobility settings. Consequently, the proposed CEP scheme improves the spectral efficiency compared to the conventional MMSE CE approach, especially when the number of users is large, which is demonstrated numerically., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Distributed intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) deployed in multi-user wireless communication systems promise improved system performance. However, the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) analysis and IRSs optimization in such a system become challenging, due to the large number of involved parameters. The system optimization can be simplified if users are associated with IRSs, which in turn focus on serving the associated users. We provide a practical theoretical framework for the average SINR analysis of a distributed IRSs-assisted multi-user MISO system, where IRSs are optimized to serve their associated users. In particular, we derive the average SINR expression under maximum ratio transmission (MRT) precoding at the BS and optimized reflect beamforming configurations at the IRSs. A successive refinement (SR) method is then outlined to optimize the IRS-user association parameters for the formulated max-min SINR problem which motivates user-fairness. Simulations validate the average SINR analysis while confirming the superiority of a distributed IRSs system over a centralized IRS system as well as the gains with optimized IRS-user association as compared to random association.

Simulation results reveal that the low-complexity DE protocol yields better net sum-rate than the full CE protocol when used to obtain CSI for precoding. A benchmark full I-CSI based RISs design is also outlined and shown to yield higher SINR but lower net sum-rate than the S-CSI based RISs design due to the large overhead associated with full I-CSI acquisition. Therefore the proposed DE-S-CSI based design for precoding and reflect beamforming achieves high net sum-rate with low complexity, overhead and power consumption.

In this paper, we consider and study a cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) system aided with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), where a large number of access points (APs) cooperate to serve a smaller number of users with the help of RIS technology. We consider imperfect channel state information (CSI), where each AP uses the local channel estimates obtained from the uplink pilots and applies conjugate beamforming for downlink data transmission. Additionally, we consider random beamforming at the RIS during both training and data transmission phases. This allows us to eliminate the need of estimating each RIS assisted link, which has been proven to be a challenging task in literature. We then derive a closed-form expression for the achievable rate and use it to evaluate the system's performance supported with numerical results. We show that the RIS provided array gain improves the system's coverage, and provides nearly a 2-fold increase in the minimum rate and a 1.5-fold increase in the per-user throughput. We also use the results to provide preliminary insights on the number of RISs that need to be used to replace an AP, while achieving similar performance as a typical CF-mMIMO system with dense AP deployment.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have drawn considerable attention recently due to their controllable scattering elements that are able to direct electromagnetic waves into desirable directions. Although RISs share some similarities with relays, the two have fundamental differences impacting their performance. To harness the benefits of both relaying and RISs, a multi-user communication system is proposed in this paper wherein a relay and an RIS cooperate to improve performance in terms of energy efficiency. Using singular value decomposition (SVD), semidefinite programming (SDP), and function approximations, we propose different solutions for optimizing the beamforming matrices at the base-station (BS), the relay, and the phase shifts at the RIS to minimize the total transmit power subject to quality-of-service (QoS) constraints. The problem is solved in different cases when the relay operates in half-duplex and full-duplex modes and when the reflecting elements have continuous and discrete phase shifts. Simulation results are provided to compare the performance of the system with and without the RIS or the relay in both full-duplex and half-duplex modes, under different optimization solutions. Generally, the results show that the system with full-duplex relay and RIS cooperation outperforms all the other scenarios, and the contribution of full-duplex relay is higher than that of the RIS. However, an RIS performs better than a half-duplex relay when the required QoS is high. In light of the premises of beyond fifth generation (B5G) networks, the need for better exploiting the capabilities of cloud-enabled networks arises, so as to cope with the large-scale interference resulting from the massive increase of data-hungry systems. A compound of several clouds, jointly managing inter-cloud and intra-cloud interference, constitutes a practical solution to account for the requirements of B5G networks. This paper considers a multi-cloud radio access network model (MC-RAN), where each cloud is connected to a distinct set of base stations (BSs) via limited capacity fronthaul links. The BSs are equipped with local cache storage and baseband processing capabilities, as a means to alleviate the fronthaul congestion problem. The paper then investigates the problem of jointly assigning users to clouds and determining their beamforming vectors so as to maximize the network-wide energy efficiency (EE) subject to fronthaul capacity and transmit power constraints. This paper solves such a mixed discrete-continuous, non-convex optimization problem using fractional programming (FP) and successive inner-convex approximation (SICA) techniques to deal with the non-convexity of the continuous part of the problem, and $l_0$-norm approximation to account for the binary association part. A highlight of the proposed algorithm is its capability of being implemented in a distributed fashion across the network's multiple clouds through a reasonable amount of information exchange. The current literature on intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) focuses on optimizing the IRS phase shifts to yield coherent beamforming gains, under the assumption of perfect channel state information (CSI) of individual IRS-assisted links, which is highly impractical. This work, instead, considers the random rotations scheme at the IRS in which the reflecting elements only employ random phase rotations without requiring any CSI. The only CSI then needed is at the base station (BS) of the overall channel to implement the beamforming transmission scheme. Under this framework, we derive the sum-rate scaling laws in the large number of users regime for the IRS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channel, with optimal dirty paper coding (DPC) scheme and the lower-complexity random beamforming (RBF) and deterministic beamforming (DBF) schemes at the BS. The random rotations scheme increases the sum-rate by exploiting multi-user diversity, but also compromises the gain to some extent due to correlation. Finally, energy efficiency maximization problems in terms of the number of BS antennas, IRS elements and transmit power are solved using the derived scaling laws. Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) can improve the physical layer security (PLS) by providing a controllable wireless environment. In this paper, we propose a novel PLS technique with the help of IRS implemented by an intelligent mirror array for the visible light communication (VLC) system. First, for the IRS aided VLC system containing an access point (AP), a legitimate user and an eavesdropper, the IRS channel gain and a lower bound of the achievable secrecy rate are derived. Further, to enhance the IRS channel gain of the legitimate user while restricting the IRS channel gain of the eavesdropper, we formulate an achievable secrecy rate maximization problem for the proposed IRS-aided PLS technique to find the optimal orientations of mirrors. Since the sensitivity of mirrors' orientations on the IRS channel gain makes the optimization problem hard to solve, we transform the original problem into a reflected spot position optimization problem and solve it by a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Our simulation results show that secrecy performance can be significantly improved by adding an IRS in a VLC system.

Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications have stringent delay constraints, and hence use codes with small block length (short codewords). In these cases, classical models that provide good approximations to systems with infinitely long codewords become imprecise. To remedy this, in this paper, an average coding rate expression is derived for a large scale network with short codewords using stochastic geometry and the theory of coding in the finite blocklength regime. The average coding rate and upper and lower bounds on the outage probability of the large-scale network are derived, and a tight approximation of the outage probability is presented. Optical wireless communication (OWC) using intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) has a channel model which possesses unique features, due to the constraints imposed on the channel input. The aim of this tutorial is to overview results on the capacity of IM/DD channels with input-independent Gaussian noise as a model of OWC channels. It provides the reader with an entry point to the topic, and highlights some major contributions in this area. It begins with a discussion on channel models and how this IM/DD Gaussian channel model comes about, in addition to an explanation of input constraints. Then, it discusses the capacity of the single-input single-output channel, its computation, and capacity bounds and asymptotic capacity results. Then, it extends the discussion to the multiple-input multiple-output setup, and reviews capacity bounds for this channel model. In next-generation wireless networks, providing secure transmission and delay guarantees are two critical goals. However, either of them requires a concession on the transmission rate. In this paper, we consider a visible light network consisting of multiple access points and multiple users. Our first objective is to mathematically evaluate the achievable rate under constraints on delay and security. The second objective is to provide a cell formation with customized statistical delay and security guarantees for each user. First, we propose a user-centric design called secure cell formation, in which artificial noise is considered, and flexible user scheduling is determined. Then, based on the effective capacity theory, we derive the statistical-delay-constrained secrecy rate and formulate the cell formation problem as a stochastic optimization problem (OP). Further, based on the Lyapunov optimization theory, we transform the stochastic OP into a series of evolutionary per-slot drift-plus-penalty OPs. Finally, a modified particle swarm optimization algorithm and an interference graph-based user-centric scheduling algorithm are proposed to solve the OPs. We obtain a dynamic independent set of scheduled users as well as secure cell formation parameters. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve a better delay-constrained secrecy rate than the existing cell formation approaches.

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs)-assisted wireless communication promises improved system performance, while posing new challenges in channel estimation (CE) due to the passive nature of the reflecting elements. Although a few CE protocols for IRS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems have appeared, they either require long channel training times or are developed under channel sparsity assumptions. Moreover, existing works focus on a single IRS, whereas in practice multiple such surfaces should be installed to truly benefit from the concept of reconfiguring propagation environments. In light of these challenges, this paper tackles the CE problem for the distributed IRSs-assisted multi-user MISO system. An optimal CE protocol requiring relatively low training overhead is developed using Bayesian techniques under the practical assumption that the BS-IRSs channels are dominated by the line-of-sight (LoS) components. An optimal solution for the phase shifts vectors required at all IRSs during CE is determined and the minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimates of the BSusers direct channels and the IRSs-users channels are derived. While intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted wireless communication has emerged as an important research paradigm, channel state information (CSI) acquisition remains a critical challenge to design the IRS phase-shifts and yield the promised coherent beamforming gains. In this paper, we propose an IRS-assisted opportunistic beamforming (OBF) scheme under proportional fair scheduling, which does not require instantaneous CSI to design the IRS parameters. In a slow-fading environment, we show that with only random rotations at the IRS, the proposed scheme can capitalize on the multi-user (MU)-diversity effect to approach the performance of coherent beamforming as the number of users grows large. Integrating visible light communication (VLC) and radio-frequency (RF) networks can improve the performance of communication systems in terms of coverage and data rates. However, adding RF links to VLC networks weakens the secrecy performance due to the broadcast and ubiquitous nature of RF links. This paper studies the physical layer security (PLS) in cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (CoNOMA) hybrid VLC/RF systems. Consider a VLC system, where two entrusted users close to a VLC access point (AP) help an out-of-coverage legitimate user using RF signals in the presence of an eavesdropper. The AP transmits data to both entrusted users and the legitimate user using the principle of NOMA, where the entrusted users harvest energy from the received light intensity, decode the legitimate user's message, forward it using a RF link, and then decode their messages. It is required to maximize the secrecy rate at the legitimate user under quality-of-service (QoS) constraints using beamforming and DC-bias and power allocation. Different solutions are proposed for both active and passive eavesdropper cases, using semidefinite relaxation, zero-forcing, beamforming, and jamming. Numerical results compare between the different proposed approaches and show how the proposed approaches contribute in improving the secrecy performance of the proposed model.

This work makes the preliminary contribution of studying the asymptotic performance of a multi-user intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted-multiple-input single-output (MISO) downlink system under imperfect CSI. We first extend the existing least squares (LS) ON/OFF channel estimation protocol to a multi-user system, where we derive minimum mean squared error (MMSE) estimates of all IRS-assisted channels over multiple sub-phases. We also consider a low-complexity direct estimation (DE) scheme, where the BS obtains the MMSE estimate of the overall channel in a single sub-phase. Under both protocols, the BS implements maximum ratio transmission (MRT) precoding while the IRS design is studied in the large system limit, where we derive deterministic equivalents of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the sum-rate. The derived asymptotic expressions, which depend only on channel statistics, reveal that under Rayleigh fading IRS-to-users channels, the IRS phase-shift values do not play a significant role in improving the sum-rate but the IRS still provides an array gain. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of the derived deterministic equivalents and show that under Rayleigh fading, the IRS gains are more significant in noise-limited scenarios. Cloud radio-access networks (C-RAN) have been proposed as an enabling technology for keeping up with the requirements of next-generation wireless networks. Most existing works on C-RAN consider the uplink or the downlink separately. However, designing the uplink and the downlink jointly may bring additional advantage, especially if message source-destination information is taken into account. In this paper, this idea is demonstrated by considering pairwise message exchange between users in a C-RAN. A multi-pair two-way transmission scheme is proposed which targets maximizing the end-to-end user data rates. In the proposed scheme, a lattice-based computation strategy is used, where the baseband processing unit (BBU) pool decodes integer linear combinations of paired users' codewords instead of decoding linear combinations of individual codewords. The BBU pool then compresses the computed signals and forwards them to the remote radio heads (RRHs), which decompress the signals and send them to the users. Finally, each user decodes its desired message using its own message as side information. The achievable rate of this scheme is derived, optimized, and evaluated numerically. Results reveal that significant end-to-end rate improvement can be achieved using the proposed scheme compared to existing schemes.

The challenge of wildfire management and detection is recently gaining increased attention due to the increased severity and frequency of wildfires worldwide. Popular fire detection techniques such as satellite imaging and remote camera-based sensing suffer from late detection and low reliability while early wildfire detection is a key to prevent massive fires. In this paper, we propose a novel wildfire detection solution based on unmanned aerial vehicles assisted Internet of things (UAV-IoT) networks. The main objective is to (1) study the performance and reliability of the UAV-IoT networks for wildfire detection and (2) present a guideline to optimize the UAV-IoT network to improve fire detection probability under limited budgets. We focus on optimizing the IoT devices' density and number of UAVs covering the forest area such that a lower bound of the wildfires detection probability is maximized within a limited time and budget. At any time after the fire ignition, the IoT devices within a limited distance from the fire can detect it. These IoT devices can then report their measurements only when the UAV is nearby. Discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC) analysis is utilized to compute the fire detection probability at discrete time. Before declaring fire detection, a validation state is designed to account for IoT devices' practical limitations such as miss-detection and false alarm probabilities. Numerical results suggest that given enough system budget, the UAV-IoT based fire detection can offer a faster and more reliable wildfire detection solution than the state of the art satellite imaging techniques., Comment: Submitted to IEEE IoT journal

This paper proposes and optimizes a cooperative non-orthogonal multiple-access (Co-NOMA) scheme in the context of multicell visible light communications (VLC) networks, as a means to mitigate inter-cell interference in Co-NOMA-enabled systems. Consider a network with multiple VLC access points (APs), where each AP serves two users using light intensity. In each cell, the weak user (the cell edge user) can be served either directly by the VLC AP, or through the strong user that can decode the weak user's message and forward it through the radio-frequency (RF) link. The paper then considers the problem of maximizing the network throughput under quality-of-service (QoS) constraints by allocating the powers of the users' messages and APs' transmit powers, and determining the serving links of each weak user (i.e., VLC or hybrid VLC/RF). The paper solves such a non-convex problem by first finding closed form solutions of the joint users' powers and link selection for a fixed AP power allocation. The APs' transmit powers are then iteratively solved in an outer loop using the golden section method. Simulation results show how the proposed solution and scheme improve the system sum-rate and fairness as compared to conventional non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) schemes.

Optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) schemes are variations of OFDM schemes which produce non-negative signals. Asymmetrically-clipped O-OFDM (ACO-OFDM) is a single-layer O-OFDM scheme, whose spectral efficiency can be enhanced by adopting multiple ACO-OFDM layers or a combination of ACO-OFDM and other O-OFDM schemes. However, since symbol detection in such enhanced ACO-OFDM (eACO-OFDM) is done iteratively, erroneous detection leads to residual clipping noise (RCN) which can degrade performance in practice. Thus, it is important to develop an accurate model for RCN which can be used to design RCN-aware eACO-OFDM schemes. To this end, this paper provides a mathematical analysis of RCN leading to an accurate model of RCN power. The obtained model is used to analyze the performance of various eACO-OFDM schemes. It is shown that the model provides an accurate evaluation of symbol error rate (SER), which would be underestimated if RCN is ignored. Moreover, the model is shown to be useful for designing an RCN-aware resource allocation that increases the robustness of the system in terms of meeting a target SER, compared to an RCN-unaware design.

The concept of reconfiguring wireless propagation environments using intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS)s has recently emerged, where an IRS comprises of a large number of passive reflecting elements that can smartly reflect the impinging electromagnetic waves for performance enhancement. Previous works have shown promising gains assuming the availability of perfect channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS) and the IRS, which is impractical due to the passive nature of the reflecting elements. This paper makes one of the preliminary contributions of studying an IRS-assisted multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system under imperfect CSI. Different from the few recent works that develop least-squares (LS) estimates of the IRS-assisted channel vectors, we exploit the prior knowledge of the large-scale fading statistics at the BS to derive the Bayesian minimum mean squared error (MMSE) channel estimates under a protocol in which the IRS applies a set of optimal phase shifts vectors over multiple channel estimation sub-phases. The resulting mean squared error (MSE) is both analytically and numerically shown to be lower than that achieved by the LS estimates. Joint designs for the precoding and power allocation at the BS and reflect beamforming at the IRS are proposed to maximize the minimum user signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) subject to a transmit power constraint. The classical approach of avoiding or ignoring interference in wireless networks cannot accommodate the ambitious quality-of-service demands of ultra-dense cellular networks (CNs). However, recent ground-breaking information-theoretic advances changed our perception of interference from a foe to a friend. This paper aims to shed light on harnessing the benefits of integrating modern interference management (IM) schemes into future CNs. To this end, we envision a hybrid multiple access (HMA) scheme that decomposes the network into sub-topologies of potential IM schemes for more efficient utilization of network resources. Preliminary results show that HMA can multiply non-orthogonal multiple access performance, especially under dense user deployment.

Multi-user (MU) diversity yields sum-rate gains by scheduling a user for transmission at times when its channel is near its peak. The only information required at the base station (BS) for scheduling is the users' signal-to-noise ratios (SNR)s. MU diversity gains are limited in environments with line-of-sight (LoS) channel components and/or spatial correlation. To remedy this, previous works have proposed opportunistic beamforming (OBF) using multiple antennas at the BS to transmit the same signal, modulated by time-varying gains, to the best user at each time slot. In this paper, we propose reconfigurable surface (RS)-assisted OBF to increase the range of channel fluctuations in a single-antenna broadcast channel (BC), where opportunistic scheduling (OS) strategy achieves the sum-rate capacity. The RS is abstracted as an array of passive reflecting elements, and is dumb in the sense that it only induces random phase shifts onto the impinging electromagnetic waves, without requiring any channel state information. We develop the sum-rate scaling laws under Rayleigh, Rician and correlated Rayleigh fading and show that RS-assisted OBF with only a single-antenna BS outperforms multi-antenna BS-assisted OBF. Full-duplex communication allows a terminal to transmit and receive signals simultaneously, and hence, it is helpful in general to adapt transmissions to received signals. However, this often requires unaffordable complexity. This work focuses on simple non-adaptive transmission, and provides two classes of channels for which Shannon's information capacity regions are achieved without adaptation. The first is the injective semi-deterministic two-way channel that includes additive channels with various types of noises modeling wireless, coaxial cable, and other settings. The recently completed 5G new radio standard is a result of several cutting-edge technologies, including massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), millimeter (mm)-Wave communication and network densification. However, these technologies face two main practical limitations 1) the lack of control over the wireless channel, and 2) the high power consumption of the wireless interface. To address the need for green and sustainable future cellular networks, the concept of reconfiguring wireless propagation environments using Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS)s has emerged. An IRS comprises of a large number of low-cost passive antennas that can smartly reflect the impinging electromagnetic waves for performance enhancement. This paper looks at the evolution of the reflective radio concept towards IRSs, outlines the IRS-assisted multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication model and discusses how it differentiates from the conventional multi-antenna communication models. We propose a minimum mean squared error (MMSE) based channel estimation protocol for the design and analysis of IRS-assisted systems. Performance evaluation results at 2.5 GHz operating frequency are provided to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed system.

The paper studies optimal sensor selection for source estimation in energy harvesting Internet of Things (IoT) networks. Specifically, the focus is on the selection of the sensor locations which minimizes the estimation error at a fusion center, and to optimally allocate power and bandwidth for each selected sensor subject to a prescribed spectral and energy budget. To do so, measurement accuracy, communication link quality, and the amount of energy harvested are all taken into account. The sensor selection is studied under both analog and digital transmission schemes from the selected sensors to the fusion center. In the digital transmission case, an information theoretic approach is used to model the transmission rate, observation quantization, and encoding. We numerically prove that with a sufficient system bandwidth, the digital system outperforms the analog system with a possibly different sensor selection. Two source models are studied in this paper: static source estimation for a vector of correlated sources and dynamic state estimation for a scalar source. The design problem of interest is a Boolean non convex optimization problem, which is solved by relaxing the Boolean constraints. We propose a randomized rounding algorithm which generalizes the existing algorithm. This work focuses on the downlink of a single-cell multi-user system in which a base station (BS) equipped with $M$ antennas communicates with $K$ single-antenna users through a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) installed in the line-of-sight (LoS) of the BS. RIS is envisioned to offer unprecedented spectral efficiency gains by utilizing $N$ passive reflecting elements that induce phase shifts on the impinging electromagnetic waves to smartly reconfigure the signal propagation environment. We study the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) achieved by the optimal linear precoder (OLP), that maximizes the minimum SINR subject to a given power constraint for any given RIS phase matrix, for the cases where the LoS channel matrix between the BS and the RIS is of rank-one and of full-rank. In the former scenario, the minimum SINR achieved by the RIS-assisted link is bounded by a quantity that goes to zero with $K$. For the high-rank scenario, we develop accurate deterministic approximations for the parameters of the asymptotically OLP, which are then utilized to optimize the RIS phase matrix.
