Alterations in the gut-liver axis and changes in the gut microbiome are among the risk factors for the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). These patients show increased bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine and impaired intestinal permeability. Therefore, therapeutic options such as probiotics or prebiotics have been investigated to modulate intestinal microbiota composition to improve NAFLD. Most in vivo and in vitro probiotic studies have focused on reducing hepatic fat accumulation. The beneficial effects of probiotics on NAFLD have been demonstrated in animal models, and the most widely used microorganisms are those of the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium genera. In animal models, probiotics help restore the intestinal microbiota and improve the integrity of the intestinal barrier. This narrative review summarizes published evidence and the likely benefits of probiotics and prebiotics as a therapeutic option for patients with NAFLD.

The identification of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) mutations in lung adenocarcinoma has facilitated the development of personalized medicine based on oncogenic drivers. EGFR-Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (TKIs) are part of the targeted therapy; they impede the phosphorylation of the intracellular tyrosine kinase component of EGFR and consequently block signal transduction pathways. These drugs inhibit the proliferation and survival of tumor cells, leading to long-term progression-free survival and overall survival. Diarrhea is one of the most frequent adverse events associated with EGFR-TKIs, affecting at least 18% of patients and reaching up to 95% in some cases. Diarrhea should be managed carefully given its association with important complications, treatment interruptions, and dose reductions. Moreover, nutritional status and quality of life (QoL) can deteriorate due to severe diarrhea. Changes in diet, such as increment of fiber, supplementation with glutamine, and use of probiotics, may contribute to a decrease in the incidence of diarrhea. Introduction and Objectives: We aimed to analyze the trends of total and sex-stratified mortality from hepatitis C virus (HCV) and to estimate the proportion of non-alcoholic liver disease deaths in Mexico attributable to HCV from 2001-2017., Materials and Methods: Using the mortality multiple-cause dataset, we selected the codes for acute HCV and chronic HCV to analyze trends from 2001 to 2017. We then estimated the proportion of HCV-related deaths out of non-alcoholic chronic liver disease deaths, by including in the denominator: other acute and chronic viral hepatitis, malignant neoplasm of the liver, liver failure, chronic hepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis of the liver, and other inflammatory diseases of the liver. Average percent change (APC) for trends, overall and by sex, were estimated using Joinpoint regression., Results: The trend in crude mortality rate significantly increased from 2001-2005 (APC 18.4%; 95%CI=12.5, 24.5; p value<0.001), and then significantly decreased from 2013-2017 (APC -6.5%; 95%CI=-10.1, -2.9; p value<0.001). The first clinical guidelines on hepatic encephalopathy were published in 2009. Almost 14 years since that first publication, numerous advances in the field of diagnosis, treatment, and special condition care have been made. Therefore, as an initiative of the Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología A.C., we present a current view of those aspects. The manuscript described herein was formulated by 24 experts that participated in six working groups, analyzing, discussing, and summarizing the following topics: Definition of hepatic encephalopathy; recommended classifications; epidemiologic panorama, worldwide and in Mexico; diagnostic tools; conditions that merit a differential diagnosis; treatment; and primary and secondary prophylaxis. Likewise, these guidelines emphasize the management of certain special conditions, such as hepatic encephalopathy in acute liver failure and acute-on-chronic liver failure, as well as specific care in patients with hepatic encephalopathy, such as the use of medications and types of sedation, describing those that are permitted or recommended, and those that are not., (Copyright © 2023 Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología. Cirrhosis is characterised by a prolonged asymptomatic period in which the inflammation persists, increasing as the disease progresses. Characteristic of this is the increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines and pro-oxidant molecules which are determining factors in the development of multiple organ dysfunction. In the early development of cirrhosis, splanchnic arterial vasodilation, activation of vasoconstrictor systems (renin-angiotensin-aldosterone) and the sympathetic nervous system (noradrenaline) bring about bacterial translocation and systemic dissemination via portal circulation of bacterial products, and molecular patterns associated with damage, which exacerbate the systemic inflammation present in the patient with cirrhosis. Albumin is a molecule that undergoes structural and functional changes as liver damage progresses, affecting its antioxidant, immunomodulatory, oncotic and endothelial stabilising properties. Our knowledge of the properties of albumin reveals a molecule with multiple treatment options in patients with cirrhosis, from the compensated then decompensated phases to multiple organ dysfunction. Its recognised uses in spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, post-paracentesis circulatory dysfunction, acute kidney injury and hepatorenal syndrome are fully validated, and a treatment option has opened up in decompensated cirrhosis and in acute-on-chronic liver disease., (Copyright © 2022 Fundación Clínica Médica Sur, A.C. Introduction and Objectives: The association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cerebral hemodynamics arises from cardiovascular damage mechanisms such as endothelial dysfunction, arterial wall increased stiffness, high thickness of the intimate index of the internal carotid artery, left ventricular hypertrophy, left diastolic dysfunction, calcification coronary arteries and increased epicardial fat. The multidirectional relationship between systemic inflammation and lipid metabolism constitutes a common and simultaneous mechanism that causes vascular damage. This study aims to provide insight into the relationship between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and the function of systemic circulation and cerebral circulation using Doppler ultrasound., Patients and Methods: Is an observational, cross-sectional, prospective, comparative study conducted at Medica Sur Hospital. Thirty-five patients were selected consecutively. The patients consulted neurological service for various symptoms without severity criteria, such as vertigo, primary headache and balance disturbances., Results: There is a difference in the variables mean of the right MCA PI (p = 0.023), left MCA PI" (p = 0.004), and left VA PI (p = 0.036) between the control and NAFLD groups. The correlation analysis between these variables and the CAP showed a positive correlation of the three variables with the CAP, "right MCA PI" (r = 0.384), left MCA PI "(r = 0.509) and" left VA PI " (r = 0.551)., Conclusions: This study demonstrates a subclinical process of the middle cerebral artery in subjects with NAFLD, which suggests it may be involved in the disease development and points the need to make decisions for this liver manifestation prevention and treatment., (Copyright © 2020 Fundación Clínica Médica Sur, A.C. Introduction and Aim: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely associated with overweight and obesity, becoming one of the most prevalent hepatic diseases nowadays. Circulating hemoglobin (Hb) concentration is significantly higher in people with NAFLD, compared to healthy patients. While liver biopsy remains the gold standard for NAFLD diagnosis, it is not the best technique due to adverse events that may occur. Therefore it is important to find less invasive and more sensitive markers. This study aimed to determine the association of serum Hb levels in patients with steatosis and fibrosis as a noninvasive marker., Material and Methods: A 1,186 patient cross-sectional study nested in a randomized clinical trial (NCT01874249) was conducted. Patients were diagnosed by ultrasound for hepatic steatosis and fibroscan for fibrosis; blood test and anthropometric measurements were also assessed., Results: Serum Hb increased proportionally related to the steatosis level, being significantly higher in patients with severe steatosis than in patients with moderate and mild steatosis., Conclusion: Patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease showed elevated levels of circulating Hb, evidence that suggests that Hb exerts a protective role, as it may act as an antioxidant and may counteract the adverse effects of this disease.

Introduction: Hospitalized patients are susceptible to medication errors, which represent between the fourth and the sixth cause of death. The department of intra-hospital pharmacovigilance intervenes in the entire process of medication with the purpose to prevent, repair and assess damages., Objective: To analyze medication errors reported by Mexican Fundación Clínica Médica Sur pharmacovigilance system and their impact on patients., Method: Prospective study carried out from 2012 to 2015, where medication prescriptions given to patients were recorded. Owing to heterogeneity, data were described as absolute numbers in a logarithmic scale., Results: 292 932 prescriptions of 56 368 patients were analyzed, and 8.9% of medication errors were identified. The treating physician was responsible of 83.32% of medication errors, residents of 6.71% and interns of 0.09%. Bile acids (BAs), the end products of cholesterol catabolism, are essential for the absorption of lipids and fat-soluble vitamins; but they have also emerged as novel signaling molecules that act as metabolic regulators. It has been well described that the enterohe-patic circulation, a nuclear (FXR) and a cytoplasmic (TGR5/M-BAR) receptor aid in controlling hepatic bile acid synthesis. Modulating bile acid synthesis greatly impacts in metabolism, because these receptors also are implicated in glucose, lipid, and energy expenditure. Recent studies had revealed the way these receptors participate in regulating gluconeogenesis, peripheral insulin sensitivity, glycogen synthesis, glucagon like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and insulin secretion. Nowadays, it is demonstrated that enhancing bile acid signaling in the intestine contributes to the metabolic benefits of bile acid sequestrants and bariatric surgery on glucose homeos-tasis. Aim: This cross-sectional study evaluated liver fibrosis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and compared the characteristics of metabolically healthy obese (MHO) with metabolically unhealthy obese (MUHO) patients., Methods: The study was nested within a randomized clinical trial (RCT) and included obese patients with NAFLD, as determined by liver ultrasonography. Fibrosis was assessed by transient elastography, and AST-to-platelet ratio index (APRI) and NAFLD score. Patients were compared according to obesity phenotype using various accepted criteria., Results: The RCT included 1024 patients with NAFLD, of whom 428 (41.7%) were included in the present study. The prevalence of MHO ranged from 1.2% to 63%, depending on the criteria used. According to various criteria for metabolic health, obese patients had less liver fibrosis. MHO patients, as defined by all criteria, showed a significantly lower prevalence of advanced liver fibrosis (F3-F4) than MUHO on transient elastography (16.5% vs. 28%, respectively; P≤0.05)., Conclusion: MUHO patients are at higher risk of liver fibrosis and, therefore, the identification of obese patients with 'healthy' characteristics is imperative as their entire clinical work-ups are likely to differ., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Masson SAS. Mexico owns approximately 4500 medicinal plants species, a great diversity that position it at the second place after China. According to the Mexican health department, 90% of common population consumes them to treat various diseases. Additionally, herbal remedies in Latin America (LA) are considered a common practice, but the frequency of use and the liver damage related to its consumption is still unknown. Despite the high prevalence and indiscriminate herbal consumption, the exact mechanism of hepatotoxicity and adverse effects is not fully clarified and is still questioned. Some herb products associated with herb induced liver injury (HILI) are characterized by presenting a different chemical composition that may vary from batch to batch, also the biological activity of many medicinal plants and other natural products are directly related to their most active component and its concentration. There are two main biological components that are associated with liver damage, alkaloids, and flavonoids, which are frequent constituents of commonly used herbs. The interaction with the different cytochrome P-450 isoforms, inflammatory, and oxidative activities seem to be the main damage pathway involved in the liver. It is important to know the herbal adverse effects and mechanisms involved; therefore, this article is focused on the beneficial and deleterious effects as well as the possible toxicity mechanisms and interactions of the herbs that are frequently used in LA, since the herb-host interaction may not always be the expected or desired depending on the clinical context in which it is administered.

Background: Transient elastography (TE) is a useful tool for the assessment of hepatic fibrosis as an alternative to liver biopsy, but it has not been validated as a screening procedure in apparently healthy people., Aim: To determine the prevalence of advanced liver fibrosis diagnosed by TE in a socioeconomically challenged rural population., Material and Methods: We enrolled 299 participants aged over 18 years old from a vulnerable population in Mexico who responded to an open invitation. All participants had their history recorded and underwent a general clinical examination and a liver stiffness measurement, performed by a single operator according to international standards., Results: Overall, 7.35% participants were found to be at high risk for cirrhosis. Three variables correlated with a risk for a TE measure ≥ 9 kPa and significant fibrosis: history of alcohol intake [7.95 vs. 92.04%, odds ratio (OR) 4.47, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.45-13.78, P = 0.0167], body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2 (30.87 vs. 69.12%, OR 4.25, 95%CI 1.04-6.10, P = 0.049), and history of diabetes mellitus (14.87 vs. 85.12%, OR 2.76, 95%CI 1.002-7.63, P = 0.0419). In the multivariate analyses BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 was the only significant risk factor for advanced liver fibrosis or cirrhosis (OR 2.54, 95%CI 1.02-6.3, P = 0.0460)., Conclusion: TE could be useful as a screening process to identify advanced liver fibrosis in the general and apparently healthy population.

Background: Actinic prurigo (AP) is an idiopathic photodermatosis that usually onsets during childhood and predominates in women. It is characterized by the symmetrical involvement of sun-exposed areas of the skin, lips, and conjunctiva., Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the risk factors associated with AP using a case-control design., Methods: All patients diagnosed with AP during 1990-2006 at Dr. Manuel Gea González General Hospital in Mexico City were included. Respective controls were recruited. Race, demographic, geographic, socioeconomic, environmental, clinical, and nutritional risk factors were assessed., Results: A total of 132 persons were enrolled. These included 44 cases and two control groups comprising, respectively, dermatology and non-dermatology outpatients without AP or any autoimmune disease. Distribution by gender, age, place of birth, place of residence, and economic status did not differ significantly among the three groups. A total of 256 variables were analyzed. Only 19 variables were found to be statistically significant (P < 0.05). These were: use of a boiler; use of firewood; car ownership; use of earthenware; mixed material housing; socioeconomic level 1; sun exposure; use of soap; lemon consumption; use of moisturizing hair cream; living with pets in the house; living with farm animals; age; having a family member with AP; having had surgery; having had trauma; having been hospitalized; use of oral medication; and use of herbal medication. Of 40 macro- and micronutrients analyzed, 11 were found to have statistically significant effects (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: Multiple epidemiologic, geographic, clinical, and immunologic factors are involved in the etiology of AP. This study proposes a clear line for research directed at specific risk factors that refer to an individual's clinical, allergic, health, and socioeconomic status. Further study should also investigate the etiologic role of diet in AP and the molecular mechanisms behind the development of AP to establish whether AP is caused by exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons., (© 2013 The International Society of Dermatology.)

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is growing around the world at an alarming rate. Obesity involves a plethora of molecules that predispose individuals to an inflammatory state and various metabolic complications. Dysregulation of nutrient metabolism is a key step during the progression of chronic liver disease that induces an inflammatory state, cellular damage, and impaired hepatic insulin signaling, which leads to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance arises from multiple defects in the liver, adipose tissues, and muscle signaling, which leads to a failure to suppress hepatic gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis, thereby enhancing fat accumulation in the hepatocytes via increased lipolysis and increased hepatic synthesis of triglycerides. This metabolic condition also increases the frequency of other comorbidities such as liver and biliary diseases. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is the hepatic expression of metabolic syndrome, which comprises a spectrum of clinical and histological events ranging from simple and benign fatty liver to steatohepatitis, which is characterized by the abnormal activation of pathways leading to an aggressive inflammatory condition. This pathological state may progress to more severe damage known as cirrhosis, which endangers the anatomy and function of liver tissue. In addition, a small group of patients with end-stage liver disease may develop hepatocellular carcinoma and finally death. By contrast, cholesterol gallstone disease is a common metabolic disease, and is considered to be the main biliary indicator of metabolic syndrome. Background: Hepatitis A is the most common type of viral hepatitis in Mexico. The change of hepatitis A epidemiology in Mexico from high to intermediate endemicity leads to increasing susceptible adults for severe illness., Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics and hospital outcome of adult patients with acute hepatitis A infection, and determine risk factor for mortality., Material and Methods: This is a retrospective observational, multicentre study in Mexico City and in Guatemala City. All inhospital patients were followed until discharge or death. Risk factors for death/acute liver failure were identified., Results: Forty seven patients were analyzed, sixty percent were male, the prodrome phase was from 3 to 30 days. The three most common symptoms were fever, malaise and jaundice, with 87%, 74% and 62% respectively. The incidence of patients who were treated with antibiotics before hospital admission was up to 34%. Unnecessary imaging studies and out of guidelines drugs were used. Presence of encephalopathy, leukocytes > 19,000/mL, blood urea nitrogen > 36 mg/dL, creatinine > 2 mg/dL, albumin < 2.5 mg/dL and total bilirubin > 9.6 mg/dL, are predictors of mortality. Serum creatinine > 2 mg/dL has the best sensibility and specificity for predicting fulminant hepatitis/death., Conclusion: Acute hepatitis A infection in adults is associated some unnecessary diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Could be associated with fulminant hepatitis, and a creatinine value > 2 mg/dL is the best predictor for fulminant hepatitis and death.

Background & Aims: Some phytochemicals present in coffee have a potential antioxidant role which seems to protect the human body against cardiovascular diseases, liver disease and malignancies. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is a common disease with limited therapeutic options. This study investigated the antioxidant effect of coffee by measuring antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation markers in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease., Material and Methods: We performed a case-control study at the University Hospital, Mexico City. Anthropometric, metabolic, dietary and biochemical variables of all patients were determined and compared. The presence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease was established by ultrasonography. All patients completed a dietary questionnaire in order to determine their of coffee consumption. Catalase, superoxide dismutase and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were measured in all of the patients., Results: Seventy-three subjects with and 57 without nonalcoholic fatty liver disease were included. Patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease had significantly higher body mass index, blood glucose, homeostasis model of assessment-insulin resistance and insulin values in comparison to patients without nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. On the one hand, there was a significant difference in coffee intake between the groups (p < 0.05, for all comparisons). There was no significant difference between groups in catalase (0.39 ± 0.74 vs. 0.28 ± 0.69 nM/min/mL), superoxide dismutase (5.4 ± 3.45 vs. 4.7 ± 2.1 U/mL) or thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (4.05 ± 1.87 vs. 3.94 ± 1.59 µM/mL)., Conclusions: A high intake of coffee has a protective effect against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease however there was no significant difference in the antioxidant variables analyzed.

Liver fibrosis represents a health problem with significant morbidity and mortality that affects 100 million people worldwide. It is a final pathway to several chronic liver diseases and is characterized by excess collagen and accumulation of extracellular matrix in response to chronic hepatocellular damage. Clinical and experimental data suggest that oxidative stress (OS) mediates the progression of fibrosis, and that OS-related molecules may act as mediators of molecular and cellular events implicated in liver fibrosis. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays an important role in producing liver damage and initiating hepatic fibrogenesis. OS disrupts lipids, proteins and DNA, induces necrosis and apoptosis of hepatocytes and amplifies the inflammatory response. ROS also stimulate the production of profibrogenic mediators from Kupffer cells and circulating inflammatory cells and directly activate hepatic stellate cells, resulting in the initiation of fibrosis. Advances in understanding the mechanisms involved in fibrosis have identified new molecular targets with therapeutic potential for more targeted and personalized control of this disease. This review will highlight recent concepts in OS, antioxidants and the molecular pathways involved in hepatic fibrosis.

Acute, acute-on-chronic and chronic liver diseases are major health issues worldwide, and most cases end with the need for liver transplantation. Up to 90% of the patients die waiting for an organ to be transplanted. Hepatic encephalopathy is a common neuropsychiatric syndrome that usually accompanies liver failure and impacts greatly on the quality of life. The molecular adsorbent recirculating system (MARS) is a recently developed form of artificial liver support that functions on a base of albumin dialysis. It facilitates the dialysis of albumin-bound and water-soluble toxins, allowing the patient to survive and even improving some clinical features of liver failure. The following manuscript reviews the technical features of MARS operation and some of the clinical trials that analyze the efficacy of the system in the therapy of liver diseases.

Introduction: Liver disease is a major health issue in Mexico. Although several studies have been performed to analyze the impact of liver diseases on the Mexican population, none has compared the prevalence and impact of liver disease between states within Mexico., Aim: To analyze trends in mortality associated with liver diseases from 2000 to 2007 at the national and state levels., Methods: Data was obtained from the Ministry of Health (number of deaths) and the National Population Council (CONAPO) (population at risk) and mortality rates were analyzed using statistical software., Results: Mortality due to viral hepatitis, liver tumors, and cirrhosis increased over the study period. Alcohol-related mortality decreased but was still the main cause of liver-related deaths. Viral hepatitis infection occurred predominantly in the northern states and liver tumors occurred predominantly in the central region. Alcohol-related deaths were elevated along the Pacific shoreline and deaths associated with cirrhosis occurred mainly in the central and southern states., Conclusion: Incidence of liver-related mortality has increased and will continue to do so in the future.

Background and Aim: Disturbances in intestinal motility have been described since XIX century, with a not very well understood pathogenesis and few therapeutic approaches. Considering chewing as an important stimulus to promote intestinal motility we designed this study to assess the efficacy of chewing gum to improve the postoperative ileus, and the clinical relevance of this intervention., Methods: Were included patients who underwent for elective left hemicolectomy during January 2007 to December 2008. The patients were randomly assigned to receive chewing gum or nothing during the post-surgery period. The main outcomes assessed were duration of postoperative ileus, and reduction in hospitalization days., Results: During the period of the study were included 32 patients, were included mainly men (11 and 9 in treated and control patients, respectively). The first defecation after surgery procedure occurs at (44.2 ± 17.6 h) in the treated group and (55.5 ± 14.8 h) in the control group (p = 0.05). In the same way oral tolerance was achieved faster in the treated group (p= 0.05). The hospital stay duration was not different among treated and not treated patients., Conclusions: The use of chewing gum in patients after elective left hemicolectomy, reduce the duration of the postoperative ileus. However, this does not reduce the hospital stay duration.

Background and Aim: Colonic diverticular disease has an incidence from 66 to 85% in population older than 65 years. Most of them remain asymptomatic;20% will be symptomatic and about 35%will present an episode of Acute Colonic Diverticulitis(ACD). To date, there are not studies to compare its presentation in elderly patients. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical presentation, diagnostic procedures, treatment and complications of acute colonic diverticulitis (ACD)in patients older and younger than 65 years., Material and Methods: A retrospective review of patients diagnosed with ACD from January 2003 to May 2006. Exclusion criteria included patients with incomplete medical records and those who didn't complete the in hospital treatment. Demographic,clinical, laboratory, and radiological,prognostic variables as well as chosen treatment,presence of complications were evaluated. Descriptive and comparative statistic analysis was performed by the Fisher Exact Test for categorical variables and Student t-Test for continual variables considering a statistically significant difference for p <0.05. The analysis was made with SPSS/PC v12.0 software., Results: Of 126 patients, 69 were men and 57 women; 93 younger than 65 years and 33 older than 65 years. 20 patients were excluded by previously defined criteria. Significant statistical differences were found for presence of pain in the left inferior quadrant (73.2% vs. 48.5% p <0.01); mean hemoglobin level (14.6 vs. 13.2 g/dL p<0.01), presence of anemia (10.8% vs. 27.3% p <0.05) use of ultrasonography (24.7% vs. 6.1%,p < 0.05) and presence of hemorrhage (3.3% vs.21.3% p < 0.01) respectively. There was not mortality in the series., Conclusion: This series demonstrates that elderly patients with ACD have a greater rate of lower gastrointestinal bleeding and greater degree of anemia than younger patients.

Objective: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is an increasingly recognized condition that may progress to end-stage liver disease. We investigated the effects of weight reduction and ursodeoxycholic acid administration in patients with this disease., Research Methods and Procedures: A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Twenty-seven women with a body mass index of >30 kg/m2 and willing to participate in the diet plan for six weeks were studied were assigned to one of two treatment groups (ursodeoxycholic acid, n = 14: placebo n = 13). Both groups received a normal diet (1,200 kcal/d) plus 1200 mg/d of ursodeoxycholic acid or placebo. Hepatic steatosis, was assessed by abdominal ultrasound. Fasting glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, and aminotransferases levels were determined before and after treatment., Results: Body mass index decreases significantly from 34.2 +/- 4.2 kg/m2 and 33.3 +/- 1.6 kg/m2 to 31.8 +/- 4.5 kg/m2 and 30.6 +/- 2.6 kg/m2 in the ursodeoxycholic acid and placebo groups, p < 0.001. The hepatic steatosis index decreased from 2.3 +/- 0.7 to 1.0 +/- 0.6 and 2.2 +/- 0.7 to 1.1 +/- 0.7 in the ursodeoxycholic acid and placebo groups, p<0.003. Serum AST decreased significantly from 41.2 +/- 5.6 to 34.5 +/- 3.4 in the ursodeoxycholic acid group, p <0.001, and from 43.6 +/- 4.2 to 35.3 +/- 2.9 in the placebo group, p <0.001. Serum ALT decreased from 62.9 +/- 6.5 to 44.0 +/- 3.5 in the ursodeoxycholic acid group, p <0.001, and from 63.5 +/- 4.5 to 44.0 +/- 3.5 in the placebo group. We did not find any differences in all variables studied between groups., Conclusions: The present study shows beneficial effect of weight reduction, producing improvements in biochemical and imaging markers of liver disease.
