Abstract

There is growing interest in non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) as a novel treatment option for substance-use disorders (SUDs). Recent momentum stems from a foundation of preclinical neuroscience demonstrating links between neural circuits and drug consuming behavior, as well as recent FDA-approval of NIBS treatments for mental health disorders that share overlapping pathology with SUDs. As with any emerging field, enthusiasm must be tempered by reason; lessons learned from the past should be prudently applied to future therapies. Here, an international ensemble of experts provides an overview of the state of transcranial-electrical (tES) and transcranial-magnetic (TMS) stimulation applied in SUDs. This consensus paper provides a systematic literature review on published data – emphasizing the heterogeneity of methods and outcome measures while suggesting strategies to help bridge knowledge gaps. The goal of this effort is to provide the community with guidelines for best practices in tES/TMS SUD research. We hope this will accelerate the speed at which the community translates basic neuroscience into advanced neuromodulation tools for clinical practice in addiction medicine.

18. Resonance ionization spectroscopy using ultraviolet laser

Abstract

In this study, Ti:sapphire laser which is pumped by the enhanced Nd:YAG laser using laser diode, was designed and manufactured. The AO Q-switched CW Nd:YAG laser was converted into a high repetition plus-type laser using the AO Q-switch, and two heads were installed inside the cavity in order to improve the laser beam quality. The Nd:YAG laser enhancement was completed by optimization using a simulation for the cavity length, structure and thermal lens effect that greatly effected the laser beam output and quality. As the result of the enhancement, a 30W laser at 532nm and at 5k-Hz was successfully made. Also, the Ti:sapphire laser that will be used for atomic spectroscopy which is pumped by the Nd:YAG laser, was completely designed. As a basic experiment for laser oscillation. We measured the tunability of the laser, and it turned out that the wave tunability range was 730 850 nm. A self-seeding type tunable laser using grating for narrow line width, is planned to be designed due to the fact that the Ti:sapphire laser should be of narrow line width for spectroscopy use.

Abstract

Radiations from a single electron irradiated by an ultra-intense laser pulse were extensively investigated by a numerical simulation. The characteristics of the radiation such as spectral distribution, radiation intensity, and angular distribution show that the relativistic nonlinear Thomson scattering, or Larmor radiation could be a good ultrashort radiation source toward x-ray region. The effect of ions which generates Bremsstrahlung radiation degrading the characteristics of Larmor radiation is also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Currently knowledge of strain in welds has mainly been obtained from strain gaging method; that is directly attaching most of the material to the gage. The very few non-contact method are still in the early stage. One of the non-contact methods is by the use of the laser that has high-level of the accuracy for the measurement, and this laser also has excellent characteristics on which many studies for its applications are focused throughout the many fields. This paper is on the measurement of the strain caused by the characteristics and the temperature changes of the TIG welded zone which is used with 3D ESPI system that is functionally modified through the laser ESPI system. This system employed the aluminum sheet-metal which are mainly used for the steel plate such as for the electronics, chemistry, food instrument and electronic appliances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

46. Infrared Hole-Burning of Crystalline Ammonium Copper Tutton Salt:  Tunneling Kinetics and Jahn−Teller Distortions

Abstract

Irradiation of the N−D stretching band in crystalline deuterium-doped ammonium copper Tutton salt rotates the ammonium ion and changes the conformation of molecules about the copper. The crystal salt exists in at least two different crystal forms, each form containing a particular Jahn−Teller distorted copper conformation. We consider only the “A” form crystal. In this crystal, the minority conformation (B) appears with the majority conformation (A) as the temperature is raised. The spectral holes and antiholes produced by the changes in conformation occur in patterns that depend on the exact frequency of irradiation. Each pattern appears and eventually decays with different kinetics over a range of times. The variation of the hole widths, measured at different temperatures, reveals the presence of various conformations in the crystal lattice. This inhomogeneity is related to the statistical distribution of conformations A and B weighted by their thermal populations. The kinetics of the decay of the holes yields the rate constants of transformation from one conformation to the other. The numerical values and the kinetic model agree well with the experimental data.

47. Transformations in Crystalline Ammonium Nickel Tutton Salt Induced by Infrared Hole Burning

Abstract

The title compound doped with a small amount of deuterium shows infrared bands due to the N−D and O−D stretching vibrations. When one of the N−D bands is irradiated with an infrared laser, holes and anti-holes are produced. The pattern of these holes/anti-holes depends on the irradiation time. A ten-minute irradiation produces holes/anti-holes in the N−D bands only. A ten-second irradiation produces holes/anti-holes in the O−D bands as well. The features produced by the ten-second irradiation decay during the longer irradiation. Thus, the burning and decay kinetics of the Tutton salts involve processes that occur on at least two time scales.
