Abstract: A fission reaction chamber based on Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters (PPACs) was built for measuring angular distributions of fragments emitted in neutron-induced fission of actinides at the neutron beam available at the Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN. The detectors and the samples were tilted 45 degrees with respect to the neutron beam direction to cover all the possible values of the emission angle of the fission fragments. The main features of this setup are discussed and results on the fission fragment angular distribution are provided for the Th-232(n,f) reaction around the fission threshold. The results are compared with the available data in the literature, demonstrating the good capabilities of this setup. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: The accuracy of the pulse height weighting technique for the determination of neutron capture cross-sections is investigated. The technique is applied to measurements performed with C6D6 liquid scintillation detectors of two different types using capture samples of various dimensions. The data for well-known (n, gamma) resonances are analyzed using weighting functions obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of the experimental set-up. Several causes of systematic deviation are identified and their effect is quantified. In all the cases measured the reaction yield agrees with the standard value within 2%. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: An efficient method of energy scale calibration for the CsI(Tl) modules of the INDRA multidetector (rings 6–12) using elastic and inelastic 12C+1H scattering at E(12C)=30MeV per nucleon is presented. Background-free spectra for the binary channels are generated by requiring the coincident detection of the light and heavy ejectiles. The gain parameter of the calibration curve is obtained by fitting the proton total charge spectra to the spectra predicted with Monte-Carlo simulations using tabulated cross section data. The method has been applied in multifragmentation experiments with INDRA at GSI.

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The prompt component at intermediate velocity of light charged particles is investigated. An improved coalescence model coupled to the intra-nuclear cascade code ISABEL is used to obtain light complex particle energy spectra and multiplicities as a function of impact parameter. The results are compared with experimental data from the 36Ar + 58Ni experiment at 95 MeV/nucleon, performed with the INDRA 4π detection system. The calculated prompt component is found to rather well reproduce proton spectra. For complex light charged particles the calculated components well populate the high energy part of spectra. Prompt emission can therefore explain the large transverse energies experimentally observed at mid-rapidity.

5. Light particles emitted with very forward quasi-projectiles in the fragmentation of 44 MeV amu-140Ar on27Al,58,64Ni, and197Au

Abstract: A first measurement is reported on coincident fast protons and neutrons evaporated by fragments detected in the incident beam direction. For all targets, the proton coincidence ratio is shown to increase with fragment velocity loss. This increase is correlated to the decrease of the fragment yield, with the coincidence ratio doubling when the yield decreases by a factor of 10. The coincidence ratio is found to also be proportional to the fragment mass loss for fragments with the beam velocity. A two-step mechanism is sketched out to describe these results.

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire, GANIL E209, GANIL E210; International audience; Reaction mechanisms have been studied for two nearly symmetrical systems of different total mass, between 25 and 74 AMeV. It is shown that collisions are mostly binary whatever the system mass and the bombarding energy. From the slowing-down of the partners, it is possible to establish the continuous evolution from quasielastic to (completely) damped collisions. It turns out that results are independent of the total system mass if involved energies are expressed in AMeV. The occurrence of mid-rapidity emission is also considered and may be used to establish a link between mechanisms observed at low and high bombarding energy. Part of it corresponds to a fast decay of outgoing partners.

Abstract: INDRA, a new and innovative highly segmented detector for light charged particles and fragments is described. It covers geometrically 90% of the 4π solid angle and has very low detection thresholds. The detector, operated under vacuum, is axially symmetric and segmented in 336 independent cells allowing efficient detection of high multiplicity events. Nucleus identification down to very low energy threshold (≈ 1 A MeV) is achieved by using ionization chambers operated with low pressure C 3 F 8 gas. Residual energies are measured by a combination of silicon (300 μm thick) and cesium iodide (5 to 14 cm in length) detectors. Very forward angles are covered by fast counting phoswich scintillators (NE102/NE115). Charge resolution up to Z = 50 is achieved on a large energy dynamic range (5000 to 1 for silicon detectors). Isotopic separation is obtained up to Z = 3. The treatment of the signals is performed through specifically designed and highly integrated modules, most of which are in the new VXIbus standard. Full remote control of parameter settings, including visualization of signals, is thus allowed. The detector is continuously monitored with a laser source and electronic pulsers and is found stable over several days. Energy calibration procedures, making use of specific detectors and the ability of the GANIL accelerator to deliver secondary beams, have been developed. First experiments were performed in the spring of 1993.

Abstract: An original method based on the use of a double magnetic spectrometer in a telescopic mode is proposed for the studies of heavy-ion collisions both at very forward angles and for magnetic rigidities close to that of the beam. It consists of the direct measurement of angular distributions on doubly - Bρ and angle - sorted events. The method has been tested on the LISE spectrometer at GANIL with a 44 MeV/A 40Ar beam impinging on C, Al, Ni and Au targets. Milliradian angular accuracy has been obtained at magnetic rigidities as close as 0.9977 of that of the beam.

Abstract: Invariant transverse-velocity spectra of intermediate-mass fragments were measured with the 4-pi multi-detector system INDRA for collisions of Au on Au at incident energies between 40 and 150 MeV per nucleon. Their scaling properties as a function of incident energy and atomic number Z are used to distinguish and characterize the emissions in (i) peripheral collisions at the projectile and target rapidities, and in (ii) central and (iii) peripheral collisions near mid-rapidity. The importance of dynamical effects is evident in all three cases and their origin is discussed.

Abstract: Sideward flow values have been determined with the INDRA multidetector for Ar+Ni, Ni+Ni and Xe+Sn systems studied at GANIL in the 30 to 100 A.MeV incident energy range. The balance energies found for Ar+Ni and Ni+Ni systems are in agreement with previous experimental results and theoretical calculations. Negative sideward flow values have been measured. The possible origins of such negative values are discussed. They could result from a more important contribution of evaporated particles with respect to the contribution of promptly emitted particles at mid-rapidity. But effects induced by the methods used to reconstruct the reaction plane cannot be totally excluded. Complete tests of these methods are presented and the origins of the ``auto-correlation'' effect have been traced back. For heavy fragments, the observed negative flow values seem to be mainly due to the reaction plane reconstruction methods. For light charged particles, these negative values could result from the dynamics of the collisions and from the reaction plane reconstruction methods as well. Abstract: The influence of the entrance channel asymmetry upon the fragmentation process is addressed by studying heavy-ion induced reactions around the Fermi energy. The data have been recorded with the INDRA 4pi array. An event selection method called the Principal Component Analysis is presented and discussed. It is applied for the selection of central events and furthermore to multifragmentation of single source events. The selected subsets of data are compared to the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM) to check the equilibrium hypothesis and get the source characteristics. Abstract: The emission of intermediate-mass fragments in collisions of 197Au on 197Au was systematically studied over the range of incident energies from 40 to 150 A MeV using the 4π-multidetector INDRA and beams from the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS at GSI Darmstadt. The analysis was performed as a function of incident energy and of impact parameter, defined through the total transverse energy of light charged particles (Etrans 12, Z⩽2). This observable was found to scale linearly with the collision energy up to a certain limit above which it saturates. Strong forward-backward asymmetries in the emission pattern with respect to the rapidities of the projectile and target residua were observed. Their possible relation to equilibration is discussed and interpreted in the framework of molecular dynamics and statistical multifragmentation models. Abstract: The light output of the 324 CsI(Tl) scintillators of INDRA has been measured over a large range both in energy: 1 - 80 AMeV and in atomic number of incident ions: Z = 1 - 60. An analytical expression for the nonlinear total light response as a function of the energy and the identity of the ion is proposed. It depends on four parameters. For three of them, connected to CsI(Tl) intrinsic characteristics, recommended fixed values are proposed. They are issued from the comparative study of the forward scintillators of INDRA, based on intermediate mass fragment data. The fourth one, related to light collection and to the gain of the associated photomultiplier, is particular and may be accurately obtained afterwards, from light charged particle data. Two applications are presented: fragment identification in telescopes using a CsI(Tl) crystal as residual energy detector and the scintillator energy calibration. Abstract: A simple formalism describing the light response of CsI(Tl) to heavy ions, which quantifies the luminescence and the quenching in terms of the competition between radiative transitions following the carrier trapping at the Tl activator sites and the electron-hole recombination, is proposed. The effect of the delta rays on the scintillation efficiency is for the first time quantitatively included in a fully consistent way. Abstract: Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The influence of radial flow on nuclear multifragmentation is studied using Au+Au central collisions for incident energies between 40 and 100 MeV/A. Central collisions are selected via an impact parameter estimator defined by the transverse energy of light charged particles. At all energies, the fragment size distributions are studied using the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM) in order to extract thermal excitation energies. The excess kinetic energies are analyzed via the hypothesis of a radial, self-similar, but non-isotropic flow. At the lowest energy, this flow is small with respect to the thermal energy whereas, at 100 MeV/A thermal and radial energies are of the same order. The nature and origin of the radial flow is discussed. A comparison with the predictions of the Quantum Molecular Dynamics code is presented.

Abstract: The properties of fragments and light charged particles emitted in multifragmentation of single sources formed in central 36AMeV Gd+U collisions are reviewed. Most of the products are isotropically distributed in the reaction c.m. Fragment kinetic energies reveal the onset of radial collective energy. A bulk effect is experimentally evidenced from the similarity of the charge distribution with that from the lighter 32AMeV Xe+Sn system. Spinodal decomposition of finite nuclear matter exhibits the same property in simulated central collisions for the two systems, and appears therefore as a possible mechanism at the origin of multifragmentation in this incident energy domain., Comment: 28 pages including 14 figures; submitted to Nucl. Abstract: Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The excitation energy and angular momentum transferred to quasiprojectiles have been measured in the 129Xe+natSn collisions at bombarding energies between 25 and 50 MeV/nucleon. The excitation energy of quasiprojectiles has been determined from the kinetic energy of all decay products (calorimetry). It increases with the violence of the collision, approaching 10 MeV/nucleon in the most dissipative ones. The angular momentum has been deduced from the kinetic energies and angular distributions of the emitted light charged particles (p, d, t, 3He and α). The (apparent) spin value decreases with the violence of the collision. Larger spin values are observed at the lowest bombarding energy. Data are compared with the predictions of dynamical and statistical models. They reproduce the data in a quantitative way indicating that large spin values are transferred to quasiprojectiles during the interaction. The results show that the one-body dissipation formalism still applies at intermediate bombarding energies and low-energy dissipations. With the increase of the energy, the data seem to be better described when the two-body interaction is accounted for.

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The quasi-projectile (QP) properties are investigated in the Ar+Ni collisions at 95 A.MeV taking into account the intermediate velocity emission. Indeed, in this reaction, between 52 and 95 A.MeV bombarding energies, the number of particles emitted in the intermediate velocity region is related to the overlap volume between projectile and target. Mean transverse energies of these particles are found particularly high. In this context, the mass of the QP decreases linearly with the impact parameter from peripheral to central collisions whereas its excitation energy increases up to 8 A.MeV. These results are compared to previous analyses assuming a pure binary scenario.

Abstract: Proton and deuteron correlation functions have been investigated with both impact parameter and emission source selections. The correlations of the system (129Xe + natSn) at 50 AMeV have been measured with the 4 pi INDRA which provides a complete kinematical description of each event. The emission time scale analyzed with a quantum model reveals the time sequence of the light particles emitted by the projectile-like fragment. Abstract: Intermediate velocity products in Ar+Ni collisions from 52 to 95 A.MeV are studied in an experiment performed at the GANIL facility with the 4$\pi$ multidetector INDRA. It is shown that these emissions cannot be explained by statistical decays of the quasi-projectile and the quasi-target in complete equilibrium. Three methods are used to isolate and characterize intermediate velocity products. The total mass of these products increases with the violence of the collision and reaches a large fraction of the system mass in mid-central collisions. This mass is found independent of the incident energy, but strongly dependent on the geometry of the collision. Finally it is shown that the kinematical characteristics of intermediate velocity products are weakly dependent on the experimental impact parameter, but strongly dependent on the incident energy. The observed trends are consistent with a participant-spectator like scenario or with neck emissions and/or break-up., Comment: 37 pages, 13 figures

Abstract: The atomic nucleus has often been compared to a fluid and its ground state properties have been explained in terms of a liquid drop. When moderatly heated, by means of a nuclear collision, the excess energy is removed by evaporation[1] of, usually, light particles (neutrons and LCP : protons, deuterons, tritons, 3 He and 4 He) or by fission. Violent heavy ion collisions have been seen to heat this nuclear matter up to a point where it vaporizes into LCPs. It is therefore suggested that nuclear matter behaves like a fluid with two limiting states : a liquid and a gas phase. This suggestion raises several questions : How can one define a phase for a system with such a limited number of constituents ? Are these phases equilibrated thermodynamically ? Can one define a phase transition, a critical point, a coexistence line... ?

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire, GANIL E209, GANIL E210; International audience; Recent experimental results concerning heavy systems (Pb + Au, Pb + Ag, Pb + Al, Gd + C, Gd + U, Xe + Sn, ...) obtained at GANIL with the INDRA and NAUTILUS 4$\pi arrays will be presented. The study of reaction mechanisms has shown the dominant binary and highly dissipative character of the process. The two heavy and excited fragments produced after the first stage of the interaction can decay into various decay modes from evaporation to multifragmentation including fission. However, deviations from this simple picture have been found by analyzing angular and velocity distributions of light charged particles, and fragments. Indeed, there is a certain amount of matter in excess emitted between the two primary sources suggesting either the existence of a mid-rapidity source similar to the one observed in the relativistic regime (participants) or a strong deformation induced by the dynamics of the collision (neck instability). This last possibility has been suggested by analyzing in detail the angular distributions of the fragments. More precisely, we observe an isotropic component which is compatible with the prediction of statistical models and a second one corresponding to breakup aligned with the recoil direction of the projectile like source which should be compared with the predictions of dynamical calculations based on microscopic transport models.

Abstract: The pulse-height defect (PHD) of 36Ar, 58Ni, 129Xe, 181Ta and 197Au ions in the 180 passivated ion-implanted silicon detectors of the INDRA array has been measured. The detectors faced the target with the low electric field side. The charge encoding ensured a low ballistic deficit. Detectors with the same nominal characteristics and electric field strength show a PHD dependence on the individual silicon wafer. They are classified and calibrated by using an empirical parametrization which relates the PHD to the total energy through a Z-depending power law. A PHD analytical formula, based on a simple recombination model, is also proposed. It considers a realistic charge density variation with the position coordinate on the ion path. This new formula is successfully confronted to some experimental data.

Abstract: Charged product multiplicities and Z distributions were measured for single multifragmenting sources produced in collisions between 129 Xe + nat Sn and 155 Gd + 238 U at the same available energy per nucleon. Z distributions are found identical for both reactions while fragment multiplicities scale as the charge of the total systems. A complete dynamical simulation, in which multifragmentation originates in the spinodal decomposition of a finite piece of nuclear matter resulting from an incomplete fusion of projectile and target, well accounts for this experimental observation.

Abstract: For 50 MeV/nucleon {sup 129}Xe+{sup nat}Sn multifragmentation events, we deduced, by means of correlation techniques, the multiplicities of the hydrogen and helium isotopes which were emitted by the hot primary excited fragments produced at the stage of the disassembly of an equilibrated hot source. We also derived the relative kinetic energy distributions between the primary clusters and the light charged particles that they evaporate. From the comparison between the secondary multiplicities observed experimentally and the multiplicities predicted by the GEMINI model, we concluded that the source breaks into primary fragments which are characterized by the same N/Z ratio as the combined system. Knowing the secondary light charged particle multiplicities and kinetic energies, we reconstructed the average charges of the hot fragments and we estimated their mean excitation energies. The fragment excitation energies are equal to 3.0 MeV/nucleon for the full range of intermediate mass fragment atomic number. This global constancy indicates that, on the average, thermodynamical equilibrium was achieved at the disassembly stage of the source. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: Thermal scaling (Arrhenius law for an “elementary” probability p of binomial function) and reducibility in intermediate mass fragments (IMF's) production are examined for data of the reaction 129Xe+ natSn at 50 MeV/u. The study of the longitudinal velocities and of the average transverse energies of the IMF's contradicts the assumption that the total transverse energy of all detected particles Et is related to a well defined temperature. The separation of Et into the total transverse energy of light charged particles (Z=1,2) and that of IMF's elucidates the algorithm which induces a linear behavior of log(1/p) versus 1/ E t . Even in the case of a single thermalized source, calculations based on a sequential statistical model show that the Arrhenius law cannot be observed if Et is taken as an estimation of the thermal energy.

Abstract: Experimental data obtained with the 4{pi} multidetector system INDRA are used to study the light charged particle (LCP, Z{le}2) and intermediate mass fragment (IMF, Z{ge}3) production in peripheral and semicentral collisions of Xe and Sn at 50 MeV/nucleon. It is found that a sizable fraction of the detected LCP`s and IMF`s originates from the midvelocity region. These fragments can be seen to come either from a prompt (preequilibrium) mechanism or from a slower but dynamically influenced emission process. The relative magnitude of the dynamically influenced emission relative to the isotropic statistical evaporation is presented as a function of the transverse energy of light particles, used as an impact parameter selector. The results are compared to dynamical models with which a good agreement is obtained. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: The dependence of nuclear temperature upon excitation energy has been experimentally studied with increasing values of excitation energy over the years. At excitation energies per nucleon, E*/A, lower than 6 MeV the temperatures deduced from the kinetic properties of the emitted particles and clusters follow the Fermi gas law : E* = (A/k).T 2. The value of the inverse level density parameter k was found to be in the range 8 to 13[1]. When excitation energies up to 10 MeV per nucleon were reached, temperatures obtained from the relative populations of excited levels in the emitted light nuclei did not overcome 5–6 MeV[2], but this limitation could be explained by side-feeding effects. Such hot nuclei were formed in fusion or deep inelastic reactions. At incident energies above 40–50 MeV/u, binary dissipative collisions dominate and the quasi-projectiles reach excitation energies per nuclEon and kinetic temperatures above 10 MeV[4, 5]. The study of projectile “spectators” in reactions at several hundreds of MeV/u made it possible to reach similar excitation energies[3]. In this Aladin experiment at GSI, the temperature was obtained via the relative abundances of two isotope pairs[6]. The relation between this temperature Tr 0 and E*/A was interpreted as indicating a phase transition, with the nuclear gas regime dominating above E*/A = 10 MeV, as predicted[7]. However, a monotonic increase of the temperature with excitation energy was observed in similar conditions[8] and questions were raised about the significance of these caloric curves[9, 10, 11, 12], about the role played by the mass dependence of the decaying nucleus upon E*/A [13], as well as the strong effects of side-feeding, especially at high temperatures [14]. Abstract: International audience; The INDRA multidetector has been used to study multifragmentation processes in central collisions for the Xe + Sn reaction at 50 A MeV. A single isotropic source formed at an excitation energy of 12 A MeV exhausting most of the emitted charged products has been isolated in such collisions. The fragment kinetic energy spectra indicate a fast disintegration of the system with a radial collective motion of about 2 A MeV. The light charged particle characteristics within this scenario are also discussed.

Abstract: The 4π array INDRA was used to detect nearly all charged products emitted in Ar + Ni collisions between 52 and 95 MeV/u. The charge, mass and excitation energy E ∗ of the quasi-projectiles have been reconstructed event by event. Excitation energies up to 25 MeV per nucleon are reached. Apparent temperatures obtained from several double isotopic yield ratios Tr0 show different dependences upon E ∗ . T6Li7Li3Heα0 yields the highest values, as well as the high energy slopes Ts of the kinetic energy spectra. Two statistical models, sequential evaporation and gas in complete equilibrium, taking into account side feeding and discrete excited states population, show that the data can be explained by a steady increase of the initial temperature with excitation energy without evidence for a liquid-gas phase transition.

Abstract: Vaporization events detected with the 4π array INDRA, where all species have atomic numbers lower than 3 are studied. Binary dissipative collisions are found to be the dominant mechanism responsible for the production of such events. Due to large fluctuations (energy damping and mass of partners), the excitation energy of the vaporizing partners covers a very broad range from 6 to 28 A MeV.

After a brief description of the experimental set-up, the main trends as well as the evolution of fragment distributions will be presented. Some results about reaction mechanisms for particular classes of events will conclude this report.

Abstract: Using the 4π multidetector INDRA, collisions between 36Ar and 58Ni have been investigated over a broad bombarding energy range, from 32 to 95 AMeV. The onset for complete vaporization of the system into neutrons, H and He isotopes as well as the evolution with energy of the isotopic composition of the vaporization events were determined. Initial excitation energy needed for vaporization is discussed.

Abstract: Accurate beam-direction measurements ((0±3) mrad) have been performed on the 40 Ar projectile fragmentation on a Ni target, at 44 MeV/u, by using the telescopic mode on the double spectrometer LISE at GANIL. Sampling results on Al and Au targets are also presented. Velocity distributions are analysed for fragments of masses from 10 to 45. As expected from a study of the forward-angle physics, the presented beam-direction measurements (0°) and the grazing-angle ones (3°) exhibit important differences. The most probable velocities are found much closer to the beam one at 0° than at 3°. The velocity-integrated mass yields obtained in the beam direction exhibit a regular exponential rise from A ∼18 to A ∼40; they are found larger or much larger than at the grazing angle, at variance with the less populated light proton-rich fragments. Integrated yields are found dependent on these new results. A non-dissipative process has to be invoked in the beam direction. The role of diffraction is to be examined. No unique mechanism can explain the whole set of results now available.

Abstract: Because they are brittle, unstable light nuclei can produce an annular diffraction pattern observed on their decay products with large cross sections. Within this simple model, the 9Li angular distribution observed in the 11Li fragmentation at 790 MeV/A have been reproduced together with the reaction cross section and the fragmentation yield provided recoil effects from neutron emission are included. It results that for this projectile and for light targets, diffraction is the main source of transverse momentum for 9Li whereas for neutrons it originates from its emission energy in the 11Li center of mass.

Abstract: Using a magnetic spectrometer, a precision measurement of N/Z distributions and fragment velocity distributions was performed at 0.6° and 1.5° in peripheral collisions of 200 MeV / nucleon 84Kr on a gold target. The data are compared with both the participant-spectator model and the intranuclear cascade model. It is shown that the primary fragments underwent substantial excitation, which cannot be accomodated with the cold fragmentation.

Abstract: Kinematical properties and chemical composition of vaporizing sources observed in heavy-ion collisions are presented. Vaporizing sources detected with the 4π array INDRA, are defined as sources for which all detected species have atomic numbers lower than 3. The excitation energy of the sources covers a very broad range (6–28 A MeV). The occurrence of thermodynamical equilibrium is discussed by comparing the data with the results of two statistical models. The model describing a gas in thermal and chemical equilibrium reproduces rather well the data suggesting that thermodynamical equilibrium may have been reached for such sources.

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire; This paper introduces a new method for the selection of central single-source events, based on classical multivariate techniques. The resulting discriminating variable is shown to be valid for different hypotheses on the nuclear source deexcitation mechanism. It enables the selection of events which are representative of the whole set of single-source events. Application to the Ni+Ni at 32A MeV system measured with the INDRA multidetector has allowed the determination of the fusion probability as a function of the impact parameter and the evaluation of the corresponding cross section.

Abstract: A small-mass system has been developed for monitoring the flux of neutrons with energy up to 1 MeV at the new time-of-flight facility at CERN, n_TOF. The monitor is based on a thin Mylar foil with a 6Li deposit, placed in the neutron beam, and an array of Silicon detectors, placed outside the beam, for detecting the products of the 6Li(n, alpha)³H reaction. The small amount of material on the beam ensures a minimal perturbation of the flux and minimizes the background related to scattered neutrons. Moreover, a further reduction of the gamma-ray background has been obtained by constructing the scattering chamber hosting the device in carbon fibre. A detailed description of the flux monitor is here presented, together with the characteristics of the device, in terms of efficiency, resolution and induced background. The use of the monitor in the measurement of neutron capture cross-sections at n_TOF is discussed

Abstract: Multifragmentation of fused systems was observed for central collisions between 32 AMeV 129Xe and Sn, and 36 AMeV 155Gd and U. Abstract: Experimental data obtained with the $4\ensuremath{\pi}$ multidetector system INDRA are used to study midvelocity emissions of light charged particles (LCP) and intermediate mass fragments for peripheral and semicentral collisions of Xe and Sn at energies between 25 and 50 MeV/nucleon. The analysis is performed as a function of incident energy and of impact parameter, defined through the total transverse energy of LCP. The onset of midvelocity emissions is found to be close to 25 MeV/nucleon. Evaporative processes are also identified and are found to be sensitive to the impact parameter but show, for a given impact parameter, little dependence on the incident energy. A chemical analysis of the midvelocity component is performed. Compared to the evaporative process, midvelocity matter is found to be more neutron rich. Results are compared with the predictions of a dynamical model (CHIMERA). The general trends are well reproduced but some interesting differences are observed, notably in the amount of relative energy dissipation, showing that midvelocity emissions could be sensitive to the finer details of the interaction.
