19. Does AI Simplification of Authentic Blog Texts Improve Reading Comprehension, Inferencing, and Anxiety? A One-Shot Intervention in Turkish EFL Context

Abstract

This experimental study investigates the impact of ChatGPT-simplified authentic texts on university students’ reading comprehension, inferencing, and reading anxiety levels. A within-subjects design was employed, and 105 undergraduate English as a foreign language (EFL) students engaged in both original and ChatGPT-simplified text readings, serving as their own controls. The findings reveal a significant improvement in reading comprehension scores and inferencing scores following ChatGPT intervention. However, no significant change in reading anxiety levels was observed. Results suggest that ChatGPT simplification positively influences reading comprehension and inferencing, but its impact on reading anxiety remains inconclusive. This research contributes to literature on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education and sheds light on ChatGPT’s potential to influence language learning experiences within higher education contexts. The study highlights the practical application of ChatGPT as a tool for helping students engage in authentic text readings by making text more comprehensible. Based on the findings, several multifaceted implications that extend to various stakeholders in the field of language education are provided.

WOS: 000467329500004, The density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level has been utilized to achieve the electric dipole moment (mu), static dipole polarizability (alpha) and first hyperpolarizability (beta) values for ferulic acid (1) and chenodeoxycholic acid (2). The time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) technique as a powerful quantum chemical method has been implemented to reveal the dynamic alpha, beta and third-order hyperpolarizabilities (gamma) of the examined compounds. Our computational conclusions have been compared with the results of similar materials in the literature. The first and second frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) and their band gaps have also been investigated by means of DFT.

24. Theology and Tafsir in the major works of Fakhr Al-Din Al-Razi

Abstract

Fakhr al-Din al-Razi was the most celebrated scholar of the sixth Islamic century, famous throughout the Muslim world as a philosopher, theologian and exegetist. However despite this undisputed eminence his contribution to Islamic thought has not yet been properly evaluated. This thesis aims at exposing some of his ideas by a systematic analysis of his thoughts as presented in his major work so This thesis first presents what little biographical information we have for his life (Chapter I) and proceeds to the study of his major work, his tafsir (Chapter II). Then follows a detailed analysis of five major problems which occupied al-Razi's mind throughout his scholarly life: Creation (Chapter III), God's existence and Divine Attributes (Chapter IV), Free Will and Predestination (Chapter V), Prophethood (Chapter VI) and finally Resurrection (Chapter VII). These topics are also major issues which have concerned Islamic theologians in all ages. . The thesis offers a brief conclusion in which al-Razi's distinctive views on these issues are summed up.

2-s2.0-85065973466, Objectives: Inflammatory markers such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been recently introduced as potential biomarkers for tumor pathogenesis, development and prognosis in solid tumors. Our aim was to assess the correlation of clinicopathological features and NLR and PLR in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Methods: A total of 201 papillary thyroid carcinoma patients were divided into groups with a cut-off preoperative median NLR and PLR value of 1,92 and 123.9, respectively. The correlation of NLR and PLR and clinicopathological features including age, tumor size, extra-thyroidal extension, thyroid capsule invasion, surgical margin positivity, multifocality, bilaterality of the patients were analyzed. Results: The mean NLR and PLR were 2.11±0.94, 129.69±42.81, respectively. Larger tumor size and higher positivity of extra-thyroidal spread were correlated with higher NLR values. No significant relationship was found between NLR and age, presence of thyroid capsule invasion, surgical margin positivity, multifocality, bilaterality, and lymph node metastasis. Also no significant association was observed between the clinicopathological features and PLR. Conclusion: High NLR was found to correlate with tumor size and extra-thyroidal extension. NLR may be used as a marker to determine the clinical behavior of disease in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). © 2019 by Turkish Society of Nuclear Medicine.

Abstract

Objectives: We aimed to compare the effect of shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) and ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URS) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for the treatment of proximal ureteral stones. Material and methods: Between April 2014 and July 2015, patients with proximal ureteral stones who were successfully treated with URS or SWL in seven different centers were included. Patients were divided into two groups according to stone size: stones 10mm. HRQoL subscales which were evaluated by the Medical Outcome Study Short-Form 36-item survey (SF-36) Turkish version were compared for URS and SWL in these two groups one month after the performed procedure. Results: A total of 273 patients were included in the study. While 116 (52.5%) patients were treated with ureteroscopic lithotripsy, SWL was used for 105 (47.5%) patients. Fifty-two patients were excluded from the study. In proximal ureteral stones 10mm, it was found that the three subscales of the SF-36 questionnaire - role limitations because of physical health problems (RP), bodily pain (BP), and general health perception (GH) - were significantly lower in the SWL group compared with the URS group. Conclusions: Patients with proximal ureteral stones >10mm who were treated with URS generally may have a more favorable HRQoL than those treated with SWL in short-term follow-up.

Abstract

In this work we present the synthesis, spectroscopic and nonlinear optical properties of push-pull type organic dyes based on 1-phenyl-2-pyrazoline or 4-(dimethylamino)phenyl chromophores as a donor part, and bridged by a double bound ortho- or meta- substituted nitrophenyl group as an acceptor. For the optical measurements we have used the poly(methyl methacrylate) based thin films doped with the dyes. Third harmonic generation measurements were performed under the picosecond laser regime with excitation wavelength at 1064 nm. The experimental results confirmed that investigated systems can be used as the efficient nonlinear optical systems for harmonic of light generation (tripled but also doubled frequency). It has also been proved the strong dependence between chemical structure (position of electron-acceptor moiety as well as the type of electron-donor unit) and nonlinear optical (NLO) response coming from series of isomers and derivatives.

Abstract

Abstract The advancement of technology has provided new avenues for English language teachers to assist students in improving their language learning processes. Augmented reality is an emerging technology that can implement virtual objects into the physical learning environment. This quantitative study aimed to determine the impact of employing augmented reality in a CLIL lesson. The study also looks at EFL learners’ attitudes about the use of AR. For this purpose, 76 high school students (38 males and 38 females) have taken part in this study. The results showed that using an AR-based mobile application improved the language achievements of the learners. The learners who used AR have gathered better results in the CLIL lesson. Additionally, the learners had positive attitudes towards the use of augmented reality. They found it satisfying and engaging and were willing to use it in the future again. Based on the study findings, EFL teachers are encouraged to use AR in their classes to teach both content and the language.

PURPOSE: To determine the proportion of patients with undetected symptoms of overactive bladder by using the overactive bladder-validated 8 (OAB-V8) screening questionnaire and investigate these symptoms were undetected in female patients who were hospitalized. METHODS: We invited 2,250 female patients hospitalized in the Aegean region of Turkey to answer a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire included questions on evidence of lower urinary tract symptoms (OAB-V8), relevant medical history, and demographic data. Patients with a total OAB-V8 score≥8 were defined as having OAB symptoms. RESULTS: The proportion of patients with OAB symptoms in this study was 40.6%. Nearly 57% of the patients with OAB symptoms had not been previously admitted to any hospital for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The two most common reasons why women with OAB symptoms did not admit themselves to a hospital because of LUTS were as follows: "I did not think I had a disease" and "The symptoms did not bother me," with a response rate of 74.7%. Abstract

1-Pentamethylbenzyl-3-ethylimidazoliumsilver(I)bromide and 1,3-bis(pentamethylbenzyl)-4,5dimethylbenzimidazoliumsilver(I)bromide and their Ag+ complexes were synthesized and their polycrystal forms were produced by recrystallization in dichloromethane/Et2O solvent system. Structural determinations were carried out by H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR with a Varian 400 NMR system using tetramethylsilane as internal standard and CDCl3 as solvent. The disappearance of acidic N-heterocyclic carbene proton showed the formation of Ag(I) complexes. Also, elemental analyses were carried out. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements were performed to determine the formed radical structure on the samples irradiated at the room temperature for 72h by using Co-60-source with dose rate of 0.680kGy. The EPR measurements were carried out in the temperature range of 200K-450K. Identical radicals were determined on the irradiated compounds. It was observed that the shapes of the spectra of the samples were independent of the temperature but, the resonance line intensities changed linearly with the temperature. Also, it was detected that the free radical on the 1-pentamethylbenzyl-3-ethylimidazoliumsilver(I)bromide is not stable compared to that on the 1,3-bis(pentamethylbenzyl)-4,5dimethylbenzimidazoliumsilver(I)bromide.
