1. Photoluminescence and Raman investigation of stability of InSe and GaSe thin films

Abstract

Layered III-chalcogenide compounds belong to a variety of layered crystals that can be implemented in van der Waals heterostructures. Here we report an optical study of the stability of two of these compounds: indium selenide (InSe) and gallium selenide (GaSe). Micro-photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopy are used to determine how the properties of thin films of these materials change when they are exposed to air at room temperature. We find that in GaSe films, PL signal decreases on average below 50% over 24 (72) hours of exposure for films with thicknesses 10-25 (48-75) nm. In contrast, weak PL decrease of less than 20% is observed for InSe nm films after exposure of 100 hours. Similar trends are observed in Raman spectroscopy: within a week, the Raman signal decreases by a factor of 10 for a 24 nm thick GaSe, whereas no decrease was found for a 16 nm InSe film. We estimate that when exposed to air, the layers adjacent to the GaSe film surface degrade and become non-luminescent with a rate of 0.14$\pm$0.05 nm/hour. We show that the life-time of the GaSe films can be increased by up to two orders of magnitude (to several months) by encapsulation in dielectric materials such as SiO$_2$ or Si$_x$N$_y$.

Abstract

This paper presents a novel optimization approach to find the optimal STATCOM installation in the power system using Mixed Integer Distributed Ant Colony optimization (MIDACO). The proposed method is mathematically formulated based on minimizing the Voltage Deviation Index (VDI) and the installation cost of STATCOM. The ability of STATCOM to provide shunt compensation to maintain bus voltage is exploited here. The proposed approach has been tested on the standard IEEE 14-bus system.

Comparative analysis of three data compression and forwarding strategies show that neither data compression nor flow balancing can achieve the maximal possible sensor network lifetime when optimized independently. The comparisons reveal that jointly optimizing data compression and load balancing results in up to an order of magnitude longer network lifetimes than non-optimized data compression and load balancing. ©2009 IEEE.

7. Antiproliferative effects of 5FU-AgNPs on different breast cancer cells

Abstract

Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women, and researchers are seeking more effective treatments. Nanotechnology offers a promising approach by creating nanocarriers to reduce the side effects of cancer drugs. This study synthesized AgNPs-5FU nanoparticles by binding the anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5FU) to a silver nanocarrier, significantly increasing 5FU's cytotoxicity. Characterization using DLS, SEM, UV-Vis, and FTIR confirmed the nanoparticles' properties, with a size of 18–28 nm and a PDI of 0.598. The release of 5FU from AgNPs-5FU was about 70%, demonstrating sustained and controlled release. Cytotoxicity results showed that AgNPs-5FU had an IC50 value of 23.006 in MCF-7 cells and 10.41 in 4T1 cells, making it 2.14 and 4.64 times more effective than free 5FU, respectively. Low cytotoxicity was observed in HUVEC cells. This study indicates that AgNPs-5FU has significantly higher potential activity against cancer cells compared to free 5FU.

Abstract

Objectives: In Wilms Tumor (WT) secondary malignancies caused by the side effects of intensive treatments remain one of the important problems. Therefore, there is a need for new studies to identify low- and high-risk groups for WT and to improve the treatment regimens of children in the low-risk group. Therefore, in our study, we aimed to determine the prognostic significance of the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) biomarker in WT. Materials and Methods: Our study included 24 patients diagnosed with WT between January 2010 and December 2019. The correlation between COX-2 expression and significant prognostic parameters was investigated by studying COX-2 antibody using the immunohistochemical method. Results: COX-2 expression was observed in 22 of the patients, and the expression was more evident especially in the epithelial component. There was no significant correlation between COX-2 positivity and prognostic parameters. Conclusions: In our study, no significant relationship was found between significant prognostic parameters and COX-2 expression. We think that the COX-2 pathway is effective during the development phase of WT, since COX-2 expression was observed in almost all patients, therefore it may be beneficial to add COX-2 inhibitors to the treatment, and that a sufficient number of studies should be conducted in this respect.

Abstract

The aim of this work was to investigate the antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic effects of propolis on human breast cancer cells using a simple and inexpensive nanoformulation. Various methods were used to characterize the surface and morphology of propolis nanoparticles (NP-Pro), including UV-VIS, FTIR, DLS, and EDX-SEM. The cytotoxic activity of MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells was measured by XTT technique and compared with healthy cells (MCF-10A). The apoptotic effect of NP-Pro was assessed by flow cytometry using Annexin/PI. The IC50 values of NP-Pro on MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 and MCF-10A cells were 13.67 ± 0.89, 17.89 ± 0.6, 29.9 ± 0.56 µg, respectively. Abstract

In our study, fluorine doped transparent conductive glass plates are initially covered by TiO2 with electrochemical deposition method for obtained working electrode of dye sensitized solar cell. It has been used both for different surface enhancing materials and different experimental conditions to increase the covering of conductive glass surface by TiO2. In the first part of the study, five different solutions have been prepared using various surface enhancing materials. TiO2 thin films at different thicknesses have been obtained using chronoamperometry and cyclic voltammetry methods with five different solutions prepared. Then scanning electron microscopy images of thin films were analyzed and were found to be more suitable for the conditions of the solution of our coating. The best of two different solutions were selected for covering the second part of the study. It has been repeated five times with those solutions using chronoamperometry method for 20 min and at a potential of 1 V. After each covering, the drying process has been performed at 100 °C for 20 min. Also, the coatings have been obtained by cyclic voltammetry method for 20 cycles with two different solutions. Hence the best solution and method were decided on the basis of the results of UV and X-ray beam refraction analyses of obtained thin films. The working electrode of dye sensitized solar cell has been formed. Then, efficiency analysis of solar cell was performed after counter electrode had been coated with platinum. Abstract

Background: Medicinal plants are an important source of substances which are claimed to induce antimicrobial, antimutagenic and antioxidanteffects. Many plants have been used due to their antimicrobial treatments. Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of L. orientalis have not beenreported to the present day. The aim of this work was to investigate of the antimicrobial and antioxidant potentials of different extracts from L.orientalis.Materials and Methods: The extracts were screened for antimicrobial activity against different food pathogens. These bacteria include 4 Grampositive and 3 Gram negative bacteria and one fungi. The leaf extracts of plant were tested by disc diffusion assay. The MIC was evaluated onplant extracts as antimicrobial activity. In addition to, the plant extracts were tested against the stable DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazylhydrate) free-radical.Results: The acetone, ethanol and methanol extracts of L. orientalis showed maximum inhibition zone of 12 mm against Yersinia enterocolitica,Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus. In addition to, the methanol extract displayed a strong antioxidant activity (trolox equivalent= 2.23 mM).Conclusion: L. orientalis extracts have antimicrobial, and antioxidant potential. Our results support the use of this plant in traditional medicineand suggest that some of the plant extracts possess compounds with good antibacterial properties that can be used as antibacterial agents in thesearch for new drugs.Key words: Antimicrobial activity; Antioxidant activity; L. orientalis.

24. Predicting the winning team in basketball: A novel approach

Abstract

Predicting the winner of a basketball game is a difficult task, due to the inherent complexity of team sports. All 10 players on the court interact with each other and this intricate web of relationships makes the prediction task difficult, especially if the prediction model aims to account for how different players amplify or inhibit other players. Building our approach on complex systems and prototype heuristics, we identify player types through clustering and use cluster memberships to train prediction models. We achieve a prediction accuracy of ∼76% over a period of five NBA seasons and a prediction accuracy of ∼71% over a season not used for model training. Our best models outperform human experts on prediction accuracy. Our research contributes to the literature by showing that player stereotypes extracted from individual statistics are a valid approach to predict game winners.

Abstract

This paper reports production of nanofibers with voltage value of 20 kV, different fluid velocities (0.1 ml/h, 0.5 ml/h), different durations (2 min, 5 min), and distance of 7 cm in the electrospin assembly. The morphology of the produced nanofibers was observed before and after heat treatment by scanning electron microscope. The crystal structure of the nanofibers was examined by X-ray diffraction. In addition, thermal analysis/thermal gravimetric analysis of nanofibers was performed. X-ray diffraction measurements showed that the samples were crystalline in barium titanate. It was observed that the diameters of the nanofibers increased when the flow rate and time increased, while the diameters of the nanofibers decreased when the flow rate and time decreased. Scanning electron microscope images showed how the morphology of the samples changed by heat treatment. As a result, characterization results were found to be consistent with the literature. Abstract

Hazelnut and plum are very popular fruits in the world being consumed in different form and presentations. These fruits are of economic importance, especially hazelnut. In this study, the antibacterial activity of Turkish tree hazel (Corylus colurna) and Chery plum (Prunus divaricata subsp. divaricata) were investigated. The leaves of plants were extracted successively with petroleum ether, dichloromethane, methanol and distilled water in a Soxhlet apparatus. The antibacterial effects of these extracts were tested by a disk diffusion method using gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus NRRL B-767, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Bacillus subtilis NRS-744, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644) and gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Salmonella typhimurium NRRL B-4420, Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 700603). Extracts from both plants showed similar potencies against all tested microorganisms. The results show that the dichloromethane extract of C. colurna had the highest antimicrobial activity against S. typhimurium. In additionally, petroleum ether extract of P. divaricata subsp. divaricata had highest antimicrobial activity against E. faecalis. The present work demonstrates that C. colurna and P. divaricata subsp. divaricata might be a natural source of bioactive compounds that can be promoting human health and reducing disease risks.

31. The influence of post-fixation on visualising vimentin in the retina using immunofluorescence method.

Background: Post-fixation of sections is especially required for cryostat sections of fresh frozen tissues. Vimentin is an intermediate filament in both fibrillary and non-fibrillary form, expressed in Müller's cells and astrocytes of the retina. Our aim was to determine the best post-fixation method for visualising vimentin in archival mouse eyes.Materials and Methods: We used an archival mouse eye, slightly pre-fixed with paraformaldehyde and stored at -80°C for 4 years. We tried three fixatives (pa-raformaldehyde [PFA], alcohol/acetic acid [AAA] and methanol) for post-fixation of eye sections.Results: We showed that post-fixation alters the labelling properties of vimentin expressed in the retina. In the sections with no post-fixation, vimentin positivity was observed in and around the nuclei in non-fibrillary form. In PFA post-fixed sections, the vimentin in the retina was not observed as fibrils. Positivity was observed in the nuclei and in perinuclear regions of the cells. In AAA post-fixed sections, positive labelling was observed around the nuclei as fibrils. In methanol post-fixed sections, labelling was observed around the nuclei as fibrils.Conclusions: We conclude that post-fixation with AAA is more convenient for immunofluorescent labelling of vimentin in the retina for slightly PFA pre-fixed and long-term stored retina. Abstract

Power systems contingency analysis is an important issue for electric power system operators. This paper performs branch outage simulation based contingency screening using a bounded network approach. Local constrained optimization problem representing the branch outage phenomena is solved by the gravitational search algorithm. The proposed method is applied to IEEE 14 30 57 and 118 Bus Test systems and its performance from the point of capturing violations is evaluated. In addition false alarms and the computational accuracy of the proposed method are also analyzed by using scattering diagrams. Finally the proposed gravitational search based contingency screening is compared with full AC load flow solutions from the point of computational speed. Abstract

Female pelvic floor instability provokes urinary incontinence, genito-urinary and rectal prolapsus, and sexual dysfunction. Both vaginal and abdominal methods to treat pelvic organ prolapsus (POP) have been developing. Abdominal interventions became less invasive and less morbid with the use of laparoscopy. In this report, two cases of POP treated with a combined application of vaginal mesh by transobturator approach and laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy in the same operational session were presented. Case 1, a 77 year old woman, was diagnosed with stage III cystocele and stage III collum uteri rest prolapsus. The patient had a history of abdominal subtotal hysterectomy and left ooferectomy for a large uterine myoma 30 years ago. Case 2, a 67-year-old woman, was diagnosed with stage III cystocele and vaginal vault prolapse. The patient had a history of total abdominal hysterectomy plus bilateral salpingooophorectomy operation 16 years ago.

35. Branch outage solution using particle swarm optimization

Abstract

For post outage MW line flows and voltage magnitude calculations most of the methods use linear methods because of their simplicity. Especially for reactive power flow calculations one can face high errors. In this paper we use a minimization method that minimizes the errors resulting from the linear system model implementation. We solve the optimization problem using particle swarm optimization. We give some outage examples using IEEE 14 bus IEEE 30 bus and IEEE 57 bus data and compare the results with full ac load flow calculation. © 2008 Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference (AUPEC'08).
