European agri-environment schemes include the use of flower-rich field margins to promote on-farm biodiversity, but species mixtures rarely include Brassicaceae. As pests of oilseed rape (OSR; Brassica napus) and their parasitoids are mostly brassica specialists, including brassica ‘banker plants’ in the mixtures would help support these important biocontrol agents and improve pest control throughout the crop rotation. We assessed the potential of six brassicaceous plants (replicated plots grown in the field) to enhance populations of parasitoids of OSR pests whilst minimising proliferation of their pest hosts. Fodder radish (Raphanus sativus) facilitated high production of parasitoids of the pollen beetle pest (Brassicogethes aeneus) but may proliferate Ceutorhynchus weevil pests due to low parasitism. Turnip rape (B. rapa) and the B. rapa hybrid ‘Tyfon’ showed potential to perform a trap cropping function for pests, but their early flowering phenology resulted in B. aeneus larvae escaping parasitisation, potentially assisting proliferation of this pest. Forage rape B. napus exhibited similarly high B. aeneus parasitoid production characteristics to R. sativus but did not potentiate problems with other pests, indicating that it would be a favourable banker plant option. Careful selection of plants in field margin mixtures is therefore needed to maximise their benefits and ideally the whole crop pest-beneficial complex needs to be studied, as focus on a single major pest risks unintended consequences with other pest problems.

The beetleCeutorhynchusis used as a proxy for Eocene core Brassicaceae. The age of Brassicaceae has been strongly debated because their fossil record is scanty. There are four species ofCeutorhynchus inaffectatusspecies-group known in the Priabonian:Ceutorhynchus zerovaenew species in Rovno amber and three in Baltic amber. There are numerous extant members of the group, all of which feed on core Brassicaceae. Together with differentiation of Brassicaceae-feeding Pierinae (Lepidoptera) in the Priabonian, the strong presence ofCeutorhynchusindicates at least an early Priabonian age of core Brassicaceae. Uniquely in Britain, the small island of Lundy has an endemic plant that supports two species of beetles that are also endemic. The Lundy Cabbage Weevil (currently called Ceutorhynchus contractus form pallipes) was originally distinguished from mainland C. contractus by its yellow legs, but genetic and morphological studies have shown that f. pallipes can have either black or yellow legs. Over a period of 25 years we monitored the frequencies of the two colour varieties on its two main food plants, Coincya wrightii and Cochlearia danica. Consistent differences were maintained, with roughly equal colour frequencies on Coincya wrightii and black individuals more common on Cochlearia danica, even when host-plants were growing close together. We provide possible explanations for this persistent but enigmatic difference.

Data on 18 species of weevils found near the boundary between Europe and Asia beyond their known ranges are reported. A new species Sitona albicans Korotyaev sp. n. is described from Orenburg Province of Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China; it is associated with Oxytropis glabra and Glycyrrhiza spp. Six species (Bruchela medvedevi, Lixus meles, Ceutorhynchus interjectus, Boragosirocalus helenae, Oxyonyx hexarthrinus, and Pseudorchestes kostali) are recorded for the first time from Russia; ten species (Corimalia helenae, Eumecops kittaryi, Anthypurinus basicornis, Ceutorhynchus seniculus, Ceutorhynchus weisei, Sirocalodes villosipes, Platypteronyx auritus, Bradybatus kellneri, Pseudorchestes flavicornis, and Pseudorchestes tschernovi) are found for the first time in the Urals and/or the Cis-Urals, and Dorytomus rufatus is recorded for the first time from Siberia.

A brief review of, and a key to eight Palaearctic species of the weevil genus Ceutorhynchus Germar, 1823 associated with the spring and summer ephemeral crucifer Draba nemorosa (Brassicaceae) are given. Two new species related to Ceutorhynchus unguicularis C.G. Thomson, 1871 are described: C. kerzhneri sp. nov. from Primorskiy Territory and Kunashir I., and C. melniki sp. nov. from Zabaikalskiy and Primorskiy territories and eastern Mongolia.

Ceutorhynchus balciunasisp. n., closely related to the Eastern Siberian and Far Eastern C. matisi Korotyaev, is described from Oregon and California. Ceutorhynchus fallisp. n. from Alaska (Nome) is related to these two species but differs from both in a set of morphological characters typical of the Arctic and alpine weevils and may be considered a truly Arctic form. Ceutorhynchus ? kolymensis Kor., a species very close to the mostly Western Palaearctic pair of species with characteristic coarse dorsal sculpture, C. puncticollis Boh. and C. talickyi Kor., is recorded from the Rocky Mountains in Colorado (U.S.A). Ceutorhyncuis barkalovi Kor., a circumpolar species previously known in North America only from Yukon (Canada) is also recorded from the Rocky Mountains in Colorado (U.S.A). New state records of Ceutorhynchus moznettei Fall and C. downiei Colonnelli are given.

The genus Cardipennis Korotyaev, 1980 (Ceutorhynchinae: Ceutorhynchini) was studied on the basis of detailed morphological observations of various materials. Different scale patterns within a species are found for all the three species. Based on the external morphology and genitalia characteristics, Cardipennis rubripes (Hustache, 1916), C. sulcithorax (Hustache, 1916), and C. shaowuensis (Voss, 1958) are redescribed, with new records of C. rubripes from mainland China. Cardipennis species are mainly associated with annual herbs of Cannabis and Humulus (Cannabaceae). A key to species, habitus photographs, and illustrations of important characters are provided for each species. Distribution maps of the three species are also given.
