Abstract

High gradient accelerator injectors have been widely studied throughout the world-leading accelerator facilities. The demand for high frequency cavities have led the Detector, Accelerator and instrumentation laboratory (KAHVELab) in Istanbul to deploy a four-vane Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) operating at 800~MHz to accelerate 20~keV protons to 2~MeV. The protons from the microwave discharge ion source are transversely matched to the RFQ via an optimized Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) line which also contains an integrated measurement station, called measurement station (MBOX). The MBOX is used to measure the proton beam's current along with pulse length duration, profile as well as the beam emittance upstream of the RFQ. It contains a number of home-built diagnostic tools: a Faraday cup, a scintillator screen and a pepper pot plate (PP). The analysis software is also locally developed and tested for the PP photo analysis. In this note, the design, construction and tests of the integrated measurement station are discussed. The results from various measurements, especially on beam profile and charge, are compared to the simulation predictions.

Abstract

The KAHVE Laboratory, at Bo\u{g}azi\c{c}i University, Istanbul, Turkey is home to an educational proton linac project. The proton beam will originate from a 20 keV H+ source and will be delivered to a two module Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) operating at 800 MHz via a low energy beam transport (LEBT) line. Currently, the design phase being over, commissioning and stability tests are ongoing for the proton beamline which is already produced and installed except the RFQ which is being manufactured. This work summarizes the design, production and test phases of the ion source and LEBT line components.

Abstract

Recent cross-cultural and neuro-hormonal investigations have suggested that love is a near universal phenomenon that has a biological background. Therefore, the remaining important question is not whether love exists worldwide but which cultural, social, or environmental factors influence experiences and expressions of love. In the present study, we explored whether countries’ modernization indexes are related to love experiences measured by three subscales (passion, intimacy, commitment) of the Triangular Love Scale. Analyzing data from 9474 individuals from 45 countries, we tested for relationships with country-level predictors, namely, modernization proxies (i.e., Human Development Index, World Modernization Index, Gender Inequality Index), collectivism, and average annual temperatures. We found that mean levels of love (especially intimacy) were higher in countries with higher modernization proxies, collectivism, and average annual temperatures. In conclusion, our results grant some support to the hypothesis that modernization processes might influence love experiences.

Abstract

Touch is the primary way people communicate intimacy in romantic relationships, and affectionate touch behaviors such as stroking, hugging and kissing are universally observed in partnerships all over the world. Here, we explored the association of love and affectionate touch behaviors in romantic partnerships in two studies comprising 7880 participants. In the first study, we used a cross-cultural survey conducted in 37 countries to test whether love was universally associated with affectionate touch behaviors. In the second study, using a more fine-tuned touch behavior scale, we tested whether the frequency of affectionate touch behaviors was related to love in romantic partnerships. As hypothesized, love was significantly and positively associated with affectionate touch behaviors in both studies and this result was replicated regardless of the inclusion of potentially relevant factors as controls. Altogether, our data strongly suggest that affectionate touch is a relatively stable characteristic of human romantic relationships that is robustly and reliably related to the degree of reported love between partners.

Abstract

People across the world and throughout history have gone to great lengths to enhance their physical appearance. Evolutionary psychologists and ethologists have largely attempted to explain this phenomenon via mating preferences and strategies. Here, we test one of the most popular evolutionary hypotheses for beauty-enhancing behaviors, drawn from mating market and parasite stress perspectives, in a large cross-cultural sample. We also test hypotheses drawn from other influential and non-mutually exclusive theoretical frameworks, from biosocial role theory to a cultural media perspective. Survey data from 93,158 human participants across 93 countries provide evidence that behaviors such as applying makeup or using other cosmetics, hair grooming, clothing style, caring for body hygiene, and exercising or following a specific diet for the specific purpose of improving ones physical attractiveness, are universal. Indeed, 99% of participants reported spending >10 min a day performing beauty-enhancing behaviors. The results largely support evolutionary hypotheses: more time was spent enhancing beauty by women (almost 4 h a day, on average) than by men (3.6 h a day), by the youngest participants (and contrary to predictions, also the oldest), by those with a relatively more severe history of infectious diseases, and by participants currently dating compared to those in established relationships. The strongest predictor of attractiveness-enhancing behaviors was social media usage. Other predictors, in order of effect size, included adhering to traditional gender roles, residing in countries with less gender equality, considering oneself as highly attractive or, conversely, highly unattractive, TV watching time, higher socioeconomic status, right-wing political beliefs, a lower level of education, and personal individualistic attitudes. Abstract

The COVID-19 restrictions have impacted people’s lifestyles in all spheres (social, psychological, political, economic, and others). This study explored which factors affected the level of anxiety during the time of the first wave of COVID-19 and subsequent quarantine in a substantial proportion of 23 countries, included in this study. The data was collected from May to August 2020 (5 June 2020). The sample included 15,375 participants from 23 countries: (seven from Europe: Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Russia; 11 from West, South and Southeast Asia: Armenia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey; two African: Nigeria and Tanzania; and three from North, South, and Central America: Brazil, Canada, United States). Level of anxiety was measured by means of the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and the 20-item first part of The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI)—State Anxiety Inventory (SAI). Respondents were also asked about their personal experiences with COVID-19, attitudes toward measures introduced by governments, changes in attitudes toward migrants during a pandemic, family income, isolation conditions, etc. The factor analysis revealed that four factors explained 45.08% of variance in increase of anxiety, and these components were interpreted as follows: (1) personal awareness of the threat of COVID-19, (2) personal reaction toward officially undertaken measures and attitudes to foreigners, (3) personal trust in official sources, (4) personal experience with COVID-19. Three out of four factors demonstrated strong associations with both scales of anxiety: high level of anxiety was significantly correlated with high level of personal awareness of the threat of COVID-19, low level of personal reaction toward officially undertaken measures and attitudes to foreigners, and high level of presence of personal experience with COVID-19. Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has spread throughout the world, and concerns about psychological, social, and economic consequences are growing rapidly. Individuals’ empathy-based reactions towards others may be an important resilience factor in the face of COVID-19. Self-report data from 15,375 participants across 23 countries were collected from May to August 2020 during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, this study examined different facets of empathy—Perspective-Taking, Empathic Concern, and Personal Distress, and their association with cross-cultural ratings on Individualism, Power Distance, The Human Development Index, Social Support Ranking, and the Infectious Disease Vulnerability Index, as well as the currently confirmed number of cases of COVID-19 at the time of data collection. The highest ratings on Perspective-Taking were obtained for USA, Brazil, Italy, Croatia, and Armenia (from maximum to minimum); on Empathetic Concern, for the USA, Brazil, Hungary, Italy, and Indonesia; and on Personal Distress, from Brazil, Turkey, Italy, Armenia, Indonesia. Results also present associations between demographic factors and empathy across countries. Limitations and future directions are presented.

Abstract

A wide range of literature connects sex ratio and mating behaviours in non-human animals. However, research examining sex ratio and human mating is limited in scope. Prior work has examined the relationship between sex ratio and desire for short-term, uncommitted mating as well as outcomes such as marriage and divorce rates. Less empirical attention has been directed towards the relationship between sex ratio and mate preferences, despite the importance of mate preferences in the human mating literature. To address this gap, we examined sex ratio's relationship to the variation in preferences for attractiveness, resources, kindness, intelligence and health in a long-term mate across 45 countries (n = 14 487). We predicted that mate preferences would vary according to relative power of choice on the mating market, with increased power derived from having relatively few competitors and numerous potential mates. We found that each sex tended to report more demanding preferences for attractiveness and resources where the opposite sex was abundant, compared to where the opposite sex was scarce. This pattern dovetails with those found for mating strategies in humans and mate preferences across species, highlighting the importance of sex ratio for understanding variation in human mate preferences.

Abstract

The Triangular Theory of Love (measured with Sternberg’s Triangular Love Scale–STLS) is a prominent theoretical concept in empirical research on love. To expand the culturally homogeneous body of previous psychometric research regarding the STLS, we conducted a large-scale cross-cultural study with the use of this scale. In total, we examined more than 11,000 respondents, but as a result of applied exclusion criteria, the final analyses were based on a sample of 7332 participants from 25 countries (from all inhabited continents). We tested configural invariance, metric invariance, and scalar invariance, all of which confirmed the cultural universality of the theoretical construct of love analyzed in our study. We also observed that levels of love components differ depending on relationship duration, following the dynamics suggested in the Triangular Theory of Love. Supplementary files with all our data, including results on love intensity across different countries along with STLS versions adapted in a few dozen languages, will further enable more extensive research on the Triangular Theory of Love.

Abstract

Prior and ongoing COVID-19 pandemic restrictions have resulted in substantial changes to everyday life. The pandemic and measures of its control affect mental health negatively. Self-reported data from 15,375 participants from 23 countries were collected from May to August 2020 during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. Two questionnaires measuring anxiety level were used in this study—the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and the State Anxiety Inventory (SAI). The associations between a set of social indicators on anxiety during COVID-19 (e.g., sex, age, country, live alone) were tested as well. Self-reported anxiety during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic varied across countries, with the maximum levels reported for Brazil, Canada, Italy, Iraq and the USA. Sex differences of anxiety levels during COVID-19 were also examined, and results showed women reported higher levels of anxiety compared to men. Overall, our results demonstrated that the self-reported symptoms of anxiety were higher compared to those reported in general before pandemic. We conclude that such cultural dimensions as individualism/collectivism, power distance and looseness/tightness may function as protective adaptive mechanisms against the development of anxiety disorders in a pandemic situation.

Abstract

Interpersonal touch behavior differs across cultures, yet no study to date has systematically tested for cultural variation in affective touch, nor examined the factors that might account for this variability. Here, over 14,000 individuals from 45 countries were asked whether they embraced, stroked, kissed, or hugged their partner, friends, and youngest child during the week preceding the study. We then examined a range of hypothesized individual-level factors (sex, age, parasitic history, conservatism, religiosity, and preferred interpersonal distance) and cultural-level factors (regional temperature, parasite stress, regional conservatism, collectivism, and religiosity) in predicting these affective-touching behaviors. Our results indicate that affective touch was most prevalent in relationships with partners and children, and its diversity was relatively higher in warmer, less conservative, and religious countries, and among younger, female, and liberal people. This research allows for a broad and integrated view of the bases of cross-cultural variability in affective touch.

Abstract

Across the world, millions of couples get married each year. One of the strongest predictors of whether partners will remain in their relationship is their reported satisfaction. Marital satisfaction is commonly found to be a key predictor of both individual and relational well-being. Despite its importance in predicting relationship longevity, there are relatively few empirical research studies examining predictors of marital satisfaction outside of a Western context. To address this gap in the literature and complete the existing knowledge about global predictors of marital satisfaction, we used an open-access database of self-reported assessments of self-reported marital satisfaction with data from 7178 participants representing 33 different countries. The results showed that sex, age, religiosity, economic status, education, and cultural values were related, to various extents, to marital satisfaction across cultures. However, marriage duration, number of children, and gross domestic product (GDP) were not found to be predictors of marital satisfaction for countries represented in this sample. While 96% of the variance of marital satisfaction was attributed to individual factors, only 4% was associated with countries. Together, the results show that individual differences have a larger influence on marital satisfaction compared to the country of origin. Findings are discussed in terms of the advantages of conducting studies on large cross-cultural samples.

Abstract

Considerable research has examined human mate preferences across cultures, finding universal sex differences in preferences for attractiveness and resources as well as sources of systematic cultural variation. Two competing perspectives-an evolutionary psychological perspective and a biosocial role perspective-offer alternative explanations for these findings. However, the original data on which each perspective relies are decades old, and the literature is fraught with conflicting methods, analyses, results, and conclusions. Using a new 45-country sample (N = 14,399), we attempted to replicate classic studies and test both the evolutionary and biosocial role perspectives. Support for universal sex differences in preferences remains robust: Men, more than women, prefer attractive, young mates, and women, more than men, prefer older mates with financial prospects. Cross-culturally, both sexes have mates closer to their own ages as gender equality increases. Beyond age of partner, neither pathogen prevalence nor gender equality robustly predicted sex differences or preferences across countries.

We aimed to determine whether pretreatment serum levels of IL-2 and IL-10 are predictive of the response to IFN treatment and to investigate if treatment response or nonresponse has any effect on the circulating levels of these cytokines. Patients and Methods: 37 patients (18 responders and 19 non-responders) with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection who received IFN-[alpha]2b for 6 months were studied. Responders were defined by complete alanine aminotransferase (ALT) normalization and loss of HCV RNA as detected by bDNA assay while patients who had elevated ALT levels and positive HCV RNA after 6 months were considered as nonresponders. Results: Genotype distribution, ALT and HCG RNA levels were similar in responders and nonresponders. A significant number of patients with chronic hepatitis C (20/37 = 54%) had elevated IL-2 levels while IL-10 levels were not different from controls. No difference in baseline cytokine levels was observed between responders and non-responders. In the posttreatment serum samples some patients lost their detectable IL-2 or IL-10 some patients developed detectable cytokine levels after treatment irrespective of the treatment response. Conclusion: These results suggest that active liver injury in chronic hepatitis C is associated with increased circulating Th1 cytokine IL-2 but not with Th2 cytokine IL-10 and that circulating levels of these cytokines do not predict the response to IFN treatment. There is no constant and regular change in circulating levels of these cytokines under IFN treatment with respect to treatment response. Abstract

Humans express a wide array of ideal mate preferences. Around the world, people desire romantic partners who are intelligent, healthy, kind, physically attractive, wealthy, and more. In order for these ideal preferences to guide the choice of actual romantic partners, human mating psychology must possess a means to integrate information across these many preference dimensions into summaries of the overall mate value of their potential mates. Here we explore the computational design of this mate preference integration process using a large sample of n = 14,487 people from 45 countries around the world. We combine this large cross-cultural sample with agent-based models to compare eight hypothesized models of human mating markets. Across cultures, people higher in mate value appear to experience greater power of choice on the mating market in that they set higher ideal standards, better fulfill their preferences in choice, and pair with higher mate value partners. Furthermore, we find that this cross-culturally universal pattern of mate choice is most consistent with a Euclidean model of mate preference integration.

Abstract

Mate choice lies close to differential reproduction, the engine of evolution. Patterns of mate choice consequently have power to direct the course of evolution. Here we provide evidence suggesting one pattern of human mate choice—the tendency for mates to be similar in overall desirability—caused the evolution of a structure of correlations that we call the d factor. We use agent-based models to demonstrate that assortative mating causes the evolution of a positive manifold of desirability, d, such that an individual who is desirable as a mate along any one dimension tends to be desirable across all other dimensions. Further, we use a large cross-cultural sample with n = 14,478 from 45 countries around the world to show that this d-factor emerges in human samples, is a cross-cultural universal, and is patterned in a way consistent with an evolutionary history of assortative mating. Our results suggest that assortative mating can explain the evolution of a broad structure of human trait covariation.

Abstract

Indoor radon concentrations have been measured in 100 dwellings of Central Kutahya, Turkey, using LR-115 type II Solid-State Nuclear Track Detectors. The detectors were placed in living rooms during the period of March–May 2010 for three times. The annual indoor radon concentrations vary from 74.1 ± 2.4 to 272.3 ± ± 4.2 Bq m-3, with a mean value of 120.8 ± 2.0 Bq m-3. Based on these results, we find an annual effective dose varying from 1.9 to 6.9 mSv, with a mean value of 3 mSv y-1 received by inhabitants living in Kutahya city. © 2016, Editura Academiei Romane. Abstract

Objective: Theories about how couples help each other to cope with stress, such as the systemic transactional model of dyadic coping, suggest that the cultural context in which couples live influences how their coping behavior affects their relationship satisfaction. In contrast to the theoretical assumptions, a recent meta-analysis provides evidence that neither culture, nor gender, influences the association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction, at least based on their samples of couples living in North America and West Europe. Thus, it is an open questions whether the theoretical assumptions of cultural influences are false or whether cultural influences on couple behavior just occur in cultures outside of the Western world. Method: In order to examine the cultural influence, using a sample of married individuals (N = 7973) from 35 nations, we used multilevel modeling to test whether the positive association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction varies across nations and whether gender might moderate the association. Results: Results reveal that the association between dyadic coping and relationship satisfaction varies between nations. In addition, results show that in some nations the association is higher for men and in other nations it is higher for women. Conclusions: Cultural and gender differences across the globe influence how couples' coping behavior affects relationship outcomes. This crucial finding indicates that couple relationship education programs and interventions need to be culturally adapted, as skill trainings such as dyadic coping lead to differential effects on relationship satisfaction based on the culture in which couples live.

The normal conducting part of the TAC PAF will consist of an ion source, a low energy beam transport line, a radio frequency quadrupole, a medium energy beam transport line, and two drift tube linac structures in order to accelerate the beam up to 65 MeV. Acceleration from 65 MeV up to 2-GeV energy will be provided by a SC-spoke cavity and two SC-elliptical cavities. In the long term, TAC PAF will be used as a neutron source. However we would like to present a patient with multiple sclerosis and chronic hepatitis C virus infection who obtained dual benefit from intramuscular interferon-beta therapy. Intramuscular interferon-beta1a (Avonex) 6 million U/week was started for prevention of attacks in a 32-year-old woman with multiple sclerosis. She had acquired hepatitis C virus infection from blood transfusion during a Caesarean section. Although serum transaminases were within normal limits anti-hepatitis C virus test by ELISA and hepatitis C virus RNA by polymerase chain reaction were positive. Liver biopsy revealed chronic persistent hepatitis. Considering the use of interferon-beta1a for multiple sclerosis prophylaxis and the stage of hepatitis the patient was not offered any additional treatment. Repeat liver biopsy performed after one year showed the absence of previous findings. The patient has also cleared the hepatitis-C virus RNA.

42. Risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma in Turkey

Abstract

The contribution of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and excess alcohol intake to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma in Turkey was assessed. The study was conducted through a questionnaire sent to seven major medical referral centers in different regions of Turkey and is based on 207 patients seen in the period 1994-1997. Of the seven centers, two were located in West Turkey (54 patients), two were in Central Turkey (85 patients), and two were in south and southeast Turkey (68 patients). In 196 of the 207 patients (94.7%), there was a history of chronic liver disease, and in 180 patients (87%) liver cirrhosis was documented, Of the 207 patients, 116 (56%) had hepatitis B, 48 (23.2%) had hepatitis C and 33 (15.9%) had a history of excess alcohol intake. Anti-delta testing was available in 69 of 116 patients with hepatitis B, and anti-HDV was positive in 13 of these patients (13/69, 18.8%). Of the 33 patients with a history of heavy alcohol intake, 18 had concomitant chronic viral hepatitis infection, and alcohol alone was the etiology of hepatocellular carcinoma in only 15 cases (7.2%). The distribution of etiologic factors was not homogenous in different geographical regions ill Turkey. In central, south, and southeastern Turkey, the predominant etiology of hepatocellular carcinoma was hepatitis B, whereas in western Turkey the impact of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and alcohol was similar. This study indicates that hepatitis B virus infection is the leading cause of hepatocellular carcinoma in Turkey, followed by hepatitis C infection and alcoholic liver disease.

44. Design of LNTA for Multi-Band WCDMA

Abstract

Currently, a low cost, single-chip multi-band WCDMA/GSM transceiver is needed for the 3G segment of the cellular communication that provides backward compatibility with the 2G GSM network. In this thesis, a novel, multi-band, low noise transconductance amplifier (LNTA) is presented. The LNTA has three stages, which are the transconductance, feedback and single ended to differential conversion stages. In order to eliminate the bulky and lossy passive balun deployed for single ended to differential conversion before the LNTA, a single transistor was used preceding the LNTA in order to provide a differential output. The LNTA is designed with a large transconductance in order to suppress noise in the second stage mixer of a wideband transceiver. Hence, CMOS transconductor was employed as the input stage, and the transconductance of the LNTA was stabilized by the constant gm biasing circuitry. Moreover, an active feedback technique was developed to increase the linearity of the LNTA. Finally, a dual band matching network was used in order to realize multi-band operation. The LNTA presented in this thesis achieves 1.8dB – 2.8dB noise figure in the WCDMA bands. S11 is below -12 dB from 870MHz to 960MHz and it is below -15dB from 1.8GHz to 2.2GHz. The worst case out of band IIP3 is -14dBm for low band and -8dBm for the WCDMA high band. The total current consumption is 9mA from a supply voltage of 1V. 47. Long-term efficacy of interferon-alpha and ursodeoxycholic acid in treatment of chronic type C hepatitis

Abstract

Interferon-alpha (IFN) and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) combined have a controversial role in the treatment of chronic type C hepatitis. We studied the long-term efficacy of both drugs alone or in combination. In a three-year period, 108 patients were randomized into three treatment arms: (1) IFN alone 3 MU three times a week (N = 49), (2) IFN 3 MU three times a week + UDCA 250 mg twice a day (N = 45), and (3) UDCA alone 250 mg twice a day (N 14). Response was defined as complete normalization of serum ALT. For the responders at the end of six months, the treatment was run to 12 months. Nonresponders (NRs) of the first group were crossed over to combination and NRs of the combination received 6 MU three times a week IFN + UDCA for the next six months. The enrollment to the UDCA alone arm was stopped early, since only 1/14 normalized serum ALT at the end of third month. However, 12/14 completed six months and 11 NRs received IFN 3 MU three times a week alone for the next six months. Twelve discontinued treatment due to side effects. Responders were followed-up untreated for 18 months. Sustained response (SR) was defined as persistence of normal serum ALT levels in this period. At the end of six months, 22/45 (48%) from the IFN-alone and 23/39 (58%) from the combination group responded. Twenty NRs from former and 15 of latter group were crossed over. While none of the 20 from the IFN-alone group responded to the combination, 1/15 NRs of the combination group responded to dose escalation. SR was achieved in 9/45 (20%) of the IFN alone and 7/39 (18%) of the combination group. The mean time form the end of the treatment to the relapse was not different between the groups. Five of 11 UDCA NRs responded to IFN with SR in 2. It was concluded that UDCA as a single agent is ineffective in achieving response in the treatment of chronic type C hepatitis. Combined with IFN, it increases response rate insignificantly although this is not sustained.
