Environmental pollution is increasingly recognized as a significant contributor to skin and scalp damage. Oral supplementation with a specific blend of four standardized botanical extracts (Rosmarinus officinalis, Lippia citriodora, Olea europaea leaf, and Sophora japonica) has been previously demonstrated to enhance skin health in individuals exposed to high environmental stress. Thus, it might represent a convenient strategy to also improve their scalp health aspect, particularly in subjects with sensitive scalps. To support these effects, a 12-week double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was performed in 66 women working outdoors in urban areas with high particulate matter (PM) levels and taking 250 mg of the botanical blend daily. Product efficacy was measured as follows: skin antioxidant status (FRAP); skin and scalp moisturization (corneometer), transepidermal water loss (tewameter), and oiliness (sebumeter); skin radiance and colour (spectrophotometer), elasticity and firmness (cutometer) and wrinkle depth (image analysis); and scalp clinical evaluation. Despite constant exposure to increased levels of PM, the tested product positively influenced all monitored parameters compared to both baseline and the placebo-treated group, in as early as 4 weeks. At the end of the study, key improvements included increased skin FRAP (21.9%), moisturization (9.5%), radiance (24.9%) and reduced wrinkle depth (−16.5%), dark spot pigmentation (−26.2%), and skin oiliness (−19.3%). For the scalp, moisturization increased (14.1%), TEWL decreased (−13.8%), and sebum content reduced by 16.2%. Additionally, 71% of subjects with sensitive scalps experienced reduced redness. The skin is a barrier organ subjected to lifelong exposure to internal and external factors influencing both its biological response and appearance. A randomized split-face study was carried out on 22 adult female outdoor workers using an artichoke leaf extract (CynageTM). The product's efficacy was measured before and after 28 days of use. The following skin parameters were measured: wrinkle depth, skin roughness, and radiance, to assess the product's effect on the skin appearance; Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), to assess the total antioxidant capacity; and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels, to assess the anti-inflammatory efficacy. These parameters were also integrated by the evaluation of the subjective perception of product efficacy. After 28 days of product use, the skin's appearance improved as follows: wrinkle depth and skin roughness decreased by 5.2% and 7.0%, respectively, while the skin radiance increased by 19.0%. The total antioxidant capacity of the skin increased by 20.2%. The skin's TNF-α levels decreased by 8.2%. The product efficacy was also perceived by the subjects participating in the study. This study aimed at investigating the effect of a food supplement in ameliorating the skin, hair, and nails conditions. An open-label study on 21 women with mild-to-moderate aging all over the face (including wrinkles/fine lines, loss of skin firmness/elasticity, and normal to dry skin), acute telogen effluvium, and brittle/fragile nails was conducted. Skin (moisturization, elasticity, profilometry, and skin thickness), hair (pull test and phototricogram), and nails (clinical analysis of nail plate status) parameters were measured at baseline, and after 28 and 84 days of intake. The clinical analysis carried out by a board-certified dermatologist and the self-evaluation integrated the instrumental measurements. After 28 (D28) and 84 (D84) days of product intake the skin moisturization (superficial moisturization: +6.0% at D28 and +9.2% at D84; deep moisturization: +4.2% at D28 and +7.6 at D84), elasticity (R0 parameter: -11.5% at D28 and -19.3% at D84; R2 parameter: +7.8% at D28 and +11.9 at D84), profilometry (wrinkle depth: -9.5% at D28 and -14.5% at D84; skin smoothness: -4.9% at D28 and -7.7% at D84) and thickness (+0.11 mm at D28 and +0.24 mm at D84) were improved. At D84 the density of telogen hair was reduced by 9.5%; while at day 28 pull test was not indicative for telogen effluvium. The nail status was improved in most of the enrolled subjects. The instrumental measured effects were perceived by both the dermatologist and the enrolled subjects. ABSTRACT Background Aims Methods Results Conclusions Keratin hydrolysates are active components used in food supplements to alleviate aging signs on skin, hair, and nails.This randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled study evaluates a novel keratin hydrolysate obtained from poultry feathers. This feather keratin hydrolysate (FKH) results in a characteristic mix of free L‐amino acids (≥ 83.5%). FKH was administered as a food supplement to a panel of adult women showing aging physiological signs.Participants were randomly assigned in three groups to receive daily dosages of 500 or 1000 mg of FKH or placebo for 90 days. Parameters of skin roughness, wrinkle features, deep skin moisturization, skin maximum elongation and elasticity, skin thickness, skin anisotropy, skin density, gloss of skin, hair and nails, and nail hardness were evaluated. Subjects also answered a questionnaire related to the treatment efficacy perception.Both FKH treatments showed a significant improvement of all parameters compared to day 0 and to placebo, with an exception for fiber anisotropy and fiber density which showed a significant improvement compared to day 0 and a tendency to improve compared to placebo. These measurements were bolstered by the results of a self‐assessment questionnaire, showing an overall set of positive answers for both treatments compared to placebo.Oral supplementation of FKH for 90 days is associated with an improvement in the appearance of facial skin, hair, and nails. This study highlights the benefits of free L‐amino acids mix as potential aminobiotics and not just as building blocks of proteins, suggesting a new perspective of nutricosmetic food. Background: As the appearance of the face is a primary concern of many people, ways in which to tighten the skin are increasingly in demand. In recent years, radiofrequency (RF) has become a promising nonablative, non-invasive, technique for facial rejuvenation. Objective: To assess the safety and the efficacy of a unipolar RF-based device for home use in increasing skin tightness (lifting effect) in the eyebrows area. Methods: Subjects (N = 50) aged between 30 and 70 years old showing skin wrinkledness all over the face and skin laxity in the eyebrows area were enrolled. The primary endpoint was the assessment of the eyebrow to hairline distance by means of a morphometric digital image analysis technique. Results: The eyebrows to hairline distance was statistically significant (both vs. basal condition and placebo) decreased by 1.338 ± 0.170 cm in the treated eyebrow. Conclusion: The obtained results confirm the safety and the efficacy of the tested device in decreasing skin laxity in the eyebrows area. The treatment is not time-consuming (about 6 minutes) and can be done at home. The device seems to be then a useful tool to delay skin laxity or to prolong the time to the first surgical facial lift. Background: Skin is constantly exposed to pro-oxidant environmental stress from several sources, including air pollutants, ultraviolet solar light, and chemical oxidants. Reactive oxygen species have been implicated in age-related skin disorders. Dietary bioactive antioxidant compounds, such as polyphenols, have beneficial effects on skin health. The advantage of a nutritional administration route is that blood delivers nutraceutical bioactive compounds continuously to all skin compartments, ie, the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the topical and systemic effects of a dietary supplement containing resveratrol and procyanidin on age-related alterations to the skin, the skin antioxidant pool, and systemic oxidative stress levels. Methods: An instrumental study was performed in 50 subjects (25 treated with supplements and 25 with placebo) to identify clinical features induced by chronoaging or photoaging. Product efficacy was evaluated after 60 days of treatment in terms of in vivo and in situ skin hydration, elasticity, and skin roughness levels, systemic oxidative stress levels by plasmatic derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites and oxyadsorbent tests, and extent of the skin antioxidant pool. Results: After 60 days of treatment, values for systemic oxidative stress, plasmatic antioxidant capacity, and skin antioxidant power had increased significantly. Additionally, skin moisturization and elasticity had improved, while skin roughness and depth of wrinkles had diminished. Intensity of age spots had significantly decreased, as evidenced by improvement in the individual typological angle. Conclusion: Nutraceutical and pharmacological intervention with a supplement characterized by a specific blend of resveratrol and procyanidin may be a promising strategy to support treatments for the reduction of skin wrinkling, as well as reducing systemic and skin oxidative stress. Primary cutaneous T-cell lymphomas are exceedingly rare in children and adolescents. However, mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most frequent primary cutaneous lymphoma diagnosed in childhood. Two cases of MF in siblings (a 14-year-old boy and his 10-year-old sister) are reported. On the basis of clinical features (histopathological and immunophenotypical findings) a diagnosis of MF patch lesions was made in both siblings. Since recent data in the literature have underlined a high frequency of the HLA-DQB1*03 allele in patients with familial MF (including child patients), the HLA profile of the patients was analysed, indicating the presence of a haplotype (HLA-DQB1*03,*03 in the girl, HLA-DQB1*02,*03 in the boy) corresponding with that described in recent literature. Two rare and exceptional cases of MF in siblings are reported, highlighting the presence of a peculiar haplotype. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, particularly UVB radiation, is one of the major risk factors for environmentally influenced skin disorders. β-D-glucans represent a class of natural compounds, and their use in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries is increasing. The goal of this study was to evaluate the soothing effect of a β-glucan pleuran-based cream against skin alterations caused by a solar simulator (UVA/UVB exposure) and to assess the efficacy of the cream after 30 days of use on the face and body in 20 human subjects with all skin types (sensitive, atopic, and normal) and phototypes II and III. The study consisted of the following two tests: one short term and one long term. In the short-term test, the minimal erythemal dose was determined by applying a pattern of radiation consisting of six doses of UVA+UVB radiation and was visually assessed 24 h after UV exposure. In the long-term test, pleuran-based cream was applied twice a day on both the nonirradiated face and body of all subjects for a 30-day period. Subsequently, noninvasive techniques such as skin moisture, skin brightness/radiance, skin elasticity, and total antioxidant capability were utilized. The pleuran-based cream had a positive effect on erythema induced by UV exposure, with visibly reduced erythema compared to the control area. Moreover, long-term use of the cream over a 30-day period improved all monitored skin parameters on the face and body. In summary, these results indicate that β-glucans can be used as an active ingredient with UV light-protective and soothing properties after UV exposure for the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
