Cestodes of the family Anoplocephalidae parasitize a wide range of usually herbivorous hosts including e.g. rodents, ungulates, primates, elephants and hyraxes. While in some hosts, the epidemiology of the infection is well studied, information is lacking in others. In this study of mountain gorillas in the Virunga Massif, an extensive sample set comprising adult cestodes collected via necropsies, proglottids shed in feces, and finally, fecal samples from both night nests and identified individuals were analysed. Anoplocephala gorillae was the dominant cestode species detected in night nest samples and individually known gorillas, of which only 1 individual hosted a Bertiella sp. It was shown that the 2 species can be distinguished through microscopy based on egg morphology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for diagnostics of both species were provided. Sequences of mitochondrial (cox 1) and nuclear (ITS1, 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA) markers were used to evaluate the phylogenetic position of the 2 cestodes detected in mountain gorillas. Both types of fecal samples, from night nests and from identified individuals, provided comparable information about the prevalence of anoplocephalid cestodes, although the analysis of samples collected from identified gorilla individuals showed significant intra-individual fluctuation of A. gorillae egg shedding within a short period. Therefore, multiple samples should be examined to obtain reliable data for wildlife health management programmes, especially when application of anthelmintic treatment is considered. However, while A. gorillae is apparently a common symbiont of mountain gorillas, it does not seem to impair the health of its host.

Parasites pose significant challenges to aquaculture and fisheries industries. Our study focuses on the Polyonchobothrium magnum and African catfish to address a potential health issue in aquaculture, explore host–parasite interactions that can help develop effective management practices to ensure fish health and industry sustainability. P. magnum was isolated from the stomach of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) as the primary site of infection, with a prevalence of 10%. Most affected fish were heavily infected (8 out of 10). Infection was confirmed by sequencing the PCR‐targeted region of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase subunit 1 (ND1) gene, along with light and scanning electron microscopes. The parasite had an elongated scolex with deep bothria, a prominent apical disc wider than the scolex itself, and a four‐lobed appearance. The scolex contained a central rostellum divided into two semicircles, bearing 26–30 hooks, with an average of 28. The apical disc had large hooks arranged in four quadrants, with 6–8 hooks each, averaging 7 per quadrant. No neck was observed. Phylogenetic analysis of our sequence showed a 100% match with isolates from Guangzhou, China. In infected fish, the anterior kidney showed increased expression levels of nuclear factor kappa B and lysozyme, but decreased levels of in major histocompatibility complex antigen II. Plasma analysis revealed a significant drop in superoxide dismutase, a rise in interleukin‐1 beta, and lower IgM levels compared to non‐infected controls. Non‐infected fish displayed greater gut microbiota diversity, with dominant families including Moraxellaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Fusobacteriaceae, and Caulobacteraceae, and prevalent genera such as Acinetobacter, Cetobacterium, and Brevundimonas. In contrast, infected fish exhibited very low diversity, with significantly higher proportions of Enterobacteriaceae (45.99%) and Aeromonadaceae (41.79%) compared to non‐infected fish, which had 13.76% and 3.64% respectively. Cetobacterium somerae was prevalent in non‐infected fish, while infected fish harboured Aeromonas fluvialis, Plesiomonas shigelloides, and Gallaecimonas xiamenensis. Purpose: This study describes the composition and infection patterns of macro endoparasites associated with the lizard Phyllopezus periosus. Methods: We collected 115 P. periosus over 12 expeditions on the rocky cliffs of the Missão Velha waterfall canyon in northeastern Brazil. Specimens were collected by hand, during active searches conducted between 18:00 h and 23:30 h. The infection patterns were estimated using prevalence, total abundance, and mean intensity of infection for all parasites found. Results: A total of 4256 parasites were collected from 104 hosts, resulting in an exceptionally high overall prevalence of 90.4%. No significant ontogenetic difference in the prevalence of infection was detected. Although juveniles exhibited a high parasite prevalence their parasite loads were significantly lower compared to adults. Six species of endoparasites were found; among these, the nematode Spauligodon oxkutzcabiensis was the most common endoparasite in the digestive tract, while the pentastomid Raillietiella mottae was the only species found in the respiratory tract. Conclusions: Infection rates in Gekkota species appear to correlate with body size, with larger individuals generally exhibiting a higher prevalence. This pattern was also observed across separate populations of P. periosus and other geckos from distinct ecological domains. The dominance of the monoxenous S. oxkutzcabiensis highlights potential transmission mechanisms, suggesting that behaviors such as limb licking after feeding may contribute to its prevalence. The occurrence of Physalopteroides venancioi, Oswaldocruzia sp., Parapharyngodon sp., Physaloptera sp., infecting P. periosus are new records for this host. Purpose: The members of the tetraphyllidean genus Calliobothrium exhibit a high degree of host specificity in the shark genus Mustelus. In the Indian Ocean, where M. mosis occurs dominantly, there is no information on Calliobothrium. The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the Calliobothrium species in M. mosis in the Persian Gulf, northwestern Indian Ocean. Methods: Nine specimens of Mustelus mosis were caught from the Persian Gulf. The tapeworms isolated were stained, measured, and the line drawings were made. Results: Calliobothrium narsisae n. sp. is described and differs from C. creeveyae in the intact, rather than the three-lobed, posterior bothridial margins, from C. tylotocephalum in possessing three, rather than one, suckers per bothridial muscular pad, from C. nodosum in possessing the elongated, rather than robust and thorn-like, hooks, from C. shirozame in a maximum number of four, rather than three, dorsal and four, rather than three, ventral laciniations along the strobila, and from its other congeners in possessing three, rather than two, dorsal and three, rather than two, ventral laciniations in the anteriormost immature proglottids. A key to the species of the genus is presented and the proglottisation process, by the germinative zone placed in the terminal part of the worm at least in some stages of growth to maturity, is discussed. Conclusion: The description of C. narsisae n. sp., which brings the total number of valid species of Calliobothrium to 10, also indicates that the germinative zone is not always at the anterior to strobila and in this new species it is placed in the terminal part of the worm at least in some stages of growth to maturity. Hydatid disease is an endemic parasitic infection caused by the larval stages of the tapeworm Echinococcus. It is highly endemic in Kazakhstan, with both Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis widely distributed throughout the country. Hydatid disease can affect almost any organ in the body, with the liver and lung being the most common sites, while cardiac involvement is rare. We report a case of a young female presenting with a 1-year history of stabbing precordial pain, shortness of breath, and weakness. She had a hydatid cyst involving the myocardium of the left ventricle and the left lobe of the liver. Among parasites of the digestive tract of the black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) in Poland, the best known are species of digenetic trematodes and cestodes. Nematodes of this bird species are not well known. Black-headed gulls, due to their varied diet, migration, life in a flock, and changes of habitat, can become infected with various species of helminths, and like synanthropic birds, they can spread the dispersal stages of parasites across urban and recreational areas. In the present study, an attempt was made to identify the helminth fauna of C. ridibundus from breeding colonies in north-central Poland. The aim of the study was to describe the taxonomic structure of parasites of the digestive tract of the black-headed gull and determine the quantitative parameters of their occurrence. A total of 43 black-headed gulls were examined post-mortem for gastrointestinal helminths, resulting in the identification of four cestodes (Paricterotaenia porosa, Lateriporus clerci, Anomotaenia micracantha, and Wardium fusum), three trematodes (Diplostomum pseudospathaceum, Plagiorchis laricola, and Apophallus muehlingi), and three nematodes (Eucoleus contortus, Cosmocephalus obvelatus, and Porrocaecum ensicaudatum). The construction of dams and hydroelectric plants affects biodiversity in aquatic environments and can facilitate the invasion of species. Few studies assess the long-term response of parasite fauna under these events. The aim of this study was to investigate possible changes in the endoparasite composition of the invasive catfish Trachelyopterus galeatus (Linnaeus, 1766) in the floodplain of the upper Paraná River over a 27-year study period. A total of 79 fish were collected in period 1 (1993) and 31 in period 2 (2019/2020) at the same sampling points, and the endoparasites were located in the gastrointestinal system using a stereomicroscope. It was found that the development of the fish and the composition of their endoparasitic fauna changed over time. In the second period, the fish presented smaller values for mass (g) and standard length (cm) when compared to period 1. It was found that three species of endoparasites were found per period, but although the richness was the same, the composition differed, and only one digenean (Microrchis oligovitellum Lunaschi, 1987 (Trematoda: Paramphistomidae)) was shared. The Porto Primavera Dam was built upstream of the site between the sampling periods (1999) and caused a number of environmental changes, possibly being the main factor responsible for changes in components of the parasite community. Anthropic modification to an environment can cause loss of diversity and loss of ecological interactions. We describe the composition of endoparasites associated with leaf litter anurans from an Atlantic Forest area, in southeastern Brazil. We tested if body size, sex, and reproductive modes of anuran hosts influence endoparasite abundance and richness. We sampled 583 individuals from 11 anuran species and recorded 1,600 helminths from 14 taxa. The helminths that infected the greatest number of anuran host species were the nematodes Cosmocerca parva (8 spp.), Physaloptera sp. (8 spp.), and Cosmocerca brasiliense (7 spp.), and the most abundant helminth species were Physaloptera sp. (14.6%), Cosmocerca brasiliense (13.7%) and Cosmocerca parva (12.6%). Both helminth abundance and richness were positively affected by anuran body size and dependence on water for reproduction. Larger hosts can contain a higher abundance of parasites because they may provide more physical space than smaller ones, or it can simply be a function of age. Besides, parasite species richness can be highly correlated with the amount of time a host spends in association with aquatic habitats, a conservative aspect of both parasite and host natural history. Within host species, there was a positive and significant influence of body size on helminth abundance. Haddadus binotatus females had greater helminth abundance than males, probably due to sex-related differences in behavior and/or in physiology. Our data suggest that reproductive modes could also influence helminth infection parameters in other anuran communities and should be considered in detail in future analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydatid disease is a neglected zoonotic parasitic disease caused by cysts of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. Canids, especially domestic dogs, are definitive hosts of the parasite and are the most pragmatic targets for control programs. A governmental dog deworming campaign was established in 1979 to control hydatidosis in southern Chile, which succeeded in reducing the prevalence of canine echinococcosis in Tierra del Fuego province from 68.4% (in 1978) to 1.2% (in 2002). In 2004, however, the program was dismantled to reduce costs, and since then, no follow-up echinococcosis monitoring has been conducted. We surveyed 356 domestic dogs and interviewed owners or workers at 45 ranches in Chilean Tierra del Fuego during the summer of 2015-2016. Faecal flotation was employed to detect Taeniidae eggs, and PCR was used to test faecal samples for Echinococcus granulosus. Taeniidae eggs and Echinococcus sp. DNA were detected in the faeces of 45.4% (147/324) and 6.9% (23/331) of dogs, respectively. Infrequent dog deworming and the presence of culpeo foxes (Lycalopex culpaeus) were significant predictors of the prevalence of Echinococcus sp. DNA and Taeniidae eggs. Furthermore, the presence of introduced chilla foxes (Lycalopex griseus), the municipality, and several operational characteristics of ranches (number of sheep, frequency of sheep slaughter, number of dogs, frequency of removal of dog faeces, feeding of dogs with sheep viscera) were also predictive of the prevalence of Taeniidae eggs. Our findings reveal an ongoing risk of echinococcosis with pathogen maintenance in ranch dogs in Chilean Tierra del Fuego, and in the absence of adequate control programmes, there is a tangible risk of re-emergence of hydatid disease as a public health concern.

IntroductionWhales, dolphins, and porpoises are susceptible to infections by protozoan and metazoan parasites.MethodsIn this study, tissue samples, as well as flatworms and roundworms, were collected from a common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), three short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), two striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), a harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), a long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas), and a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus). These samples were molecularly analyzed.ResultsIn one D. delphis, Toxoplasma gondii was detected in multiple organs, including the cerebellum. The cysts of the tapeworms Clistobothrium delphini and Clistobothrium grimaldii were identified in G. melas. Flukes collected from D. delphis belong to Brachycladium atlanticum, while those removed from S. coeruleoalba probably represent a new species. Four species of lungworms were also identified: Halocercus delphini in S. coeruleoalba, Halocercus sp. in T. truncatus, Stenurus globicephalae in G. melas, and a potentially new Pharurus sp. in P. phocoena.ConclusionThese findings show, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time, the presence of T. gondii DNA in D. delphis. The cerebellum of the animal was Toxoplasma-infected, which might be relevant to inadvertent stranding. In this study, new genetic markers were sequenced for several helminth parasites of marine mammals, possibly including undescribed species.

Two previously unrecognized species attributable to the genus Kontrimavichusia Makarikov & Binkienė, 2022 in arvicoline rodents from the North Caucasus are described. Kontrimavichusia testiculata sp. nov. is described from Microtus majori (Thomas, 1906) from the northwestern Caucasus (Republic of Adygeya and Karachay-Cherkess Republic, Russia) and Kontrimavichusia hobergi sp. nov. is described from Microtus daghestanicus (Shidlovsky, 1919) from the central Caucasus (Republic of North Ossetia, Russia). Kontrimavichusia testiculata is readily distinguishable from K. asymmetrica (Janicki, 1904) and K. hobergi in having a larger number of testes (4–6 per proglottis), larger suckers and a longer cirrus and cirrus-sac. In addition, the new species differs from its congeners by the position of the cirrus-sac with regard to the poral osmoregulatory canals and position of distal end of the rostellar pouch relative to the posterior margins of the suckers. Kontrimavichusia hobergi can be readily distinguished from its congeners by the arrangement of the testes in a triangle and the position of the cirrus-sac with regard to the poral osmoregulatory canals. In addition, this previously unrecognized species differs from K. asymmetrica and K. testiculata by the smaller dimensions of the fully developed strobila and a narrower ovary. The cirrus-sac of K. hobergi is larger than that in K. asymmetrica but smaller than that in K. testiculata. We also used partial sequences of the nuclear ribosomal 28S rRNA gene and mitochondrial nad1 gen to justify the generic arrangement and independent status of these two new species which are characterized in the current manuscript.

Ophiotaenia is the most diverse genus among proteocephalids, composed of species commonly found parasitizing snakes worldwide. However, the diversity of Ophiotaenia in the Neotropical region is still underestimated. This study describes Ophiotaenia karipuna n. sp. found parasitizing Erythrolamprus miliaris in the State of Amapá, Brazil. Additionally, we redescribe Ophiotaenia arandasi based on a re-examination of type series and newly collected material from Erythrolamprus taeniogaster in the State of Pará, Brazil. The new species differs from its congeners in the following characteristics: scolex width, number of testes, relative length of the cirrus–sac, absence of a vaginal sphincter, presence of a vestigial apical organ resembling a sucker, and relative size of the ovary in relation to the surface of the proglottid. Furthermore, we provide taxonomic information for Ophiotaenia arandasi not reported in the original description, including morphology of embryophore, uterine development, and the absence of the vaginal sphincter in the species. Ophiotaenia karipuna n. sp. represents the 21st- species described in snakes -from the Neotropical region and the first formally described in the Brazilian Amazon. Additionally, we provide the first ultrastructural analysis, a new host, and locality records for O. arandasi.

A neurocysticercosis-like lesion in an 11-year-old boy in the Netherlands was determined to be caused by the zoonotic Taenia martis tapeworm. Subsequent testing revealed that 15% of wild martens tested in that region were infected with T. martis tapeworms with 100% genetic similarity; thus, the infection source was most likely local.

Parasitic helminths are diverse in wild birds globally, but knowledge about helminths in Ecuadorian avifauna is still fragmentary. In the present review, records about helminths (Platyhelminthes, Nematoda, and Acanthocephala) in Ecuadorian wild birds is presented. A systematic search was carried out using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis) guideline to compile and summarize the available literature on helminths in wild birds in Ecuador. Data were obtained from ten scientific articles, eight undergraduate theses, and one doctoral dissertation, published between 1966 to 2022. Forty helminth taxa were recorded and information about the host species, site of infection, and location are provided. Nematodes of the genus Ascaridia Dujardin, 1844 were the helminth taxa with the greatest number of records in birds, parasitizing 16 avian species. Also, the Rock Dove (Columba livia; Gmelin, 1789) was the avian species with the greater number of helminth records (n = 11). This review serves as a compendium for future ecological and epidemiological studies on helminths in wild birds in Ecuador and South America.

An inventory of parasites infecting the jaguar (Panthera onca) across its distribution range is relevant for the conservation of this threatened big cat. In this study, we report the occurrence of helminths in a jaguar from Mexico using morphological techniques (cleared and stained mounts and scanning electron microscopy) and partial sequences of the 28S ribosomal RNA (28S rRNA) gene and the cytochrome c oxidase 1 mitochondrial (COI) gene. We also provide an updated list of helminth species reported in jaguars in the Americas. Three helminth taxa are identified in the jaguar examined from Mexico: Toxocara cati, Physaloptera sp., and Taenia sp. The new 28S rRNA sequences of To. cati, Physaloptera sp., and Taenia sp. and the COI sequence of Taenia sp. corroborate the identity of the helminths isolated from this host. One hundred and twenty-nine records of helminths parasitizing jaguars from 49 studies up to May 2023 were identified in the Americas. In most of these studies (73.6%), helminths were identified using coproparasitological techniques. Sixteen helminths (7 nematodes, 5 cestodes, 3 acanthocephalans, and 1 trematode) were identified at the species level in free-ranging and captive jaguars. The study demonstrates the value of an integrative taxonomy approach to increase the accuracy of parasite identification in wildlife, especially when helminth specimens are scarce or poorly fixed. Ligula intestinalis (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) is an emerging model organism for studies on parasite population biology and host–parasite interactions. However, a well-resolved genome and catalogue of its gene content has not been previously developed. Here, we present the first genome assembly of L. intestinalis, based on Oxford Nanopore Technologies, Illumina and Omni-C sequencing methodologies. We use transcriptome profiling to compare plerocercoid larvae and adult worms and identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with these life stages. The genome assembly is 775.3 mega (M)bp in size, with scaffold N50 value of 118 Mbp and encodes 27 256 predicted protein-coding sequences. Over 60% of the genome consists of repetitive sequences. Synteny analyses showed that the 10 largest scaffolds representing 75% of the genome display high correspondence to full chromosomes of cyclophyllidean tapeworms. Mapping RNA-seq data to the new reference genome, we identified 3922 differentially expressed genes in adults compared with plerocercoids. Gene ontology analyses revealed over-represented genes involved in reproductive development of the adult stage (e.g. sperm production) and significantly enriched DEGs associated with immune evasion of plerocercoids in their fish host. This study provides the first insights into the molecular biology of L. intestinalis and provides the most highly contiguous assembly to date of a diphyllobothriid tapeworm useful for population and comparative genomic investigations of parasitic flatworms. Simple Summary: Ultrastructural characters of spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon of the cestode Meggittina gerbilli, a parasite of gerbils in Tunisia, were studied using transmission electron microscopy. The type III model of spermiogenesis was observed. This model is mainly characterized by a proximodistal fusion of a single flagellum with a cytoplasmic extension. As for the sperm cell, spermatozoon type VI was observed, presenting a single axoneme, a periaxonemal sheath, crest-like bodies, twisted cortical microtubules, and a spiraled nucleus. The results show similarities between Meggittina gerbilli and other studied species within the Catenotaeniidae family. Ultrastructural characters of spermiogenesis and the mature spermatozoon of the cestode Meggittina gerbilli (Cyclophyllidea: Catenotaeniidae), a parasite of the Lesser Egyptian gerbil (Gerbillus gerbillus) and the North African gerbil (Gerbillus campestris) (Rodentia: Muridae) in the Djebel Dahar (South of Tunisia), were studied using transmission electron microscopy. The spermiogenesis of M. gerbilli is of Bâ and Marchand's type III, which is mainly characterized by a proximodistal fusion of a single flagellum with a cytoplasmic extension. In this catenotaeniid, the proximal fusion is preceded by a 90° rotation of the flagellum. The spermatozoon is a Levron et al. type VI, which presents a single axoneme with the 9 + '1' trepaxonematan pattern, a periaxonemal sheath, two crest-like bodies, twisted cortical microtubules, and a spiraled nucleus. The obtained results show similarities with the remaining studied catenotaeniids, namely Catenotaenia pusilla and Skrjabinotaenia lobata. Por esto, se considera que Acanthobothrium spp., pueden ser un biondicador de algunas amenazas en las costas de México. Estos céstodos tienen ciclos de vida indirectos, y son parásitos intestinales de elasmobranquios. Se analizaron datos de 21 años de colecta de Acanthobothrium spp., parásitos del agunas especies de batoideos, en diferentes localidades y fechas del litoral de México. Se calculó la prevalencia, y se realizó un análisis de coordenadas principales, considerando una distancia multimétrica no lineal (estacionalidad de las colectas (lluvias y secas), localidades y años de colectas) para evaluar una probable correlación entre la ausencia o presencia de Acanthobothrium. Durante el periodo evaluado, se registró un decremento en la biodiversidad de Acanthobothrium en el Golfo de México, se registraron bajos valores de prevalencia de las poblaciones de estos parásitos. Esto se interpreta como un efecto de la sensibilidad de Acanthobothrium spp. a los cambios ambientales. Los ciclos de vida de Acanthobothrium spp. pueden afectarse directa o indirectamente por contaminantes, ya sea en las larvas de vida libre, o en larvas parásitas y/o adultos de los hospederos intermediarios o definitivos. Por ello, se concluye que el incremento de contaminación en el Golfo de México afecta los valores de prevalencia de Acanthobothrium spp. Lo que destaca la importancia del uso de los parásitos como bioindicadores de la calidad ambiental.

The systematic position of Quentinia mesovitellinica (Rêgo, 1967) (Cestoda, Cyclophyllidea) from the hystricomorph rodent Galea spixii (Wagler) (Caviidae) in Brazil is reevaluated based on published information. Quentinia mesovitellinica is generally thought to belong to the family Catenotaeniidae, being thus the only catenotaeniid cestode parasitizing hystricomorph rodents and also the only catenotaeniid in South America. However, the present study shows that Q. mesovitellinica differs fundamentally from Catenotaenia Janicki, 1904 sensu lato and other catenotaeniids with respect to several morphologic features, but shares these features with Monoecocestus Beddard, 1914 sensu Beveridge (1994), a genus in the family Anoplocephalidae sensu stricto (i.e. sensu Spasskii, 1951). However, Q. mesovitellinica is not assigned here to Monoecocestus, because the latter is a morphologically heterogeneous genus and will probably be split when subjected to a comprehensive phylogenetic and taxonomic analysis. Instead, Quentinia Spasskii, 1969 is considered a valid genus in the family Anoplocephalidae s. s. The morphologically closely related Monoecocestus eljefe Haverkost & Gardner, 2010 from Galea musteloides Meyen in Bolivia is assigned to Quentinia as Q. eljefe (Haverkost & Gardner, 2010) n. comb. An amended diagnosis is provided for Quentinia.

Studying the proteome of helminths is of fundamental and applied importance, as it helps to find the molecular mechanisms underlying the life activity of parasitic organisms and the relationships in the parasite–host system. It also allows us to identify molecules that can be proposed as targets for creation of anthelmintic drugs. The review collects available information on the composition of proteins of parasitic worms. Based on data from genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic analysis of a small number of well-studied species, a primary description of the main groups of parasite proteins—structural proteins, carbohydrate metabolism enzymes, and proteins responsible for the body's resistance to stress—was carried out. Comparative studies of the protein composition of some helminths at different stages of the life cycle are presented, and proteins typical for larvae and imago parasites are described. Works devoted to the study of proteins that parasites secrete into the external environment (secretomes) are discussed separately. A total of 193 fishes from the Lesser Zab River in Altun-Kupri/ Kirkuk Province, Iraq were investigated, belonging to two families namely Cyprinidae (Luciobarbus xanthopterus Heckel, 1843) and Siluridae (93 Silurus triostegus Heckle, 1843) for the impact of parasites helminths on length-weight relationships and condition factor. Three species of helminth parasites were recovered from host fish, namely: Cestoda, Nematode and Acanthocephala. The association between helminthic parasitic infection with length-weight relationship (LWR) and condition factor in two fish species were studied. The results showed that the growth of both fish species exhibited negative allometry because the regression coefficient “b” obtained was <3. The statistical analysis showed that there was a significant difference between infected and uninfected fishes in the b value. Moreover, significantly (p< 0.05) the highest “b” value (2.2042 in L. xanthopterus and 2.8666 in S. triostegus) was recorded in uninfected fish. Condition factor (K) for the infected and uninfected fishes of both fish species were also determined in the current study. The result showed that the condition factor of both fish species was low, but the K factor of uninfected L. xanthopterus was higher (K<1.50) than that of uninfected S. triostegus (K<0.7). It is indicated that L. xanthopterus performed better than S. triostegus in the study areas. The statistical analyses showed that the K factor in both uninfected L. xanthopterus and S. triostegus fishes was significantly (p<0.05) higher than in infected fishes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mountain hares (Lepus timidus L., 1758) in the Faroe Islands, an archipelago located in the North Atlantic, are known to be commonly infected by tapeworms, the identity of which was unknown. The mountain hare, which now populates 15 of the 18 islands, was introduced from Norway in 1855. In this study, tapeworms collected from four mountain hares from four geographic areas of the Faroe Islands were subjected to molecular identification using the nuclear ribosomal DNA (28S), the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (nad1) genes. The results indicate unambiguously that the tapeworms were Mosgovoyia pectinata (Goeze, 1782) (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae sensu stricto). The phylogenetic position and origin of the Faroese M. pectinata are discussed. Given that the parasite is quite common in Norway, from where the mountain hares were introduced, it is conceivable that co-introduction of M. pectinata from Norway to the Faroe Islands took place. The phylogenetic analyses revealed high similarity of the M. pectinata sequences from three regions and the position of the Faroese isolate as the sister lineage of the isolates from Finland and East Siberia.

However, epidemiological studies on their frequency are crucial from a public health perspective, providing information on food habits and prey selection of predators. The present study aims to update the frequency of tapeworms detected in stool samples by molecular analysis in Italian wolf populations of Umbria and Marche regions collected from 2014 to 2022. Tapeworm's total frequency was 43.2%. In detail, Taenia serialis was detected in 27 samples (21.6%), T. hydatigena in 22 (17.6%), and Mesocestoides corti (syn. M. vogae) in 2 (1.6%). Three samples were identified as M. litteratus and E. granulosus s.s. (G3) and T. pisiformis, with a proportion of 0.8%, respectively. The low frequency of E. granulosus in a hyperendemic area is discussed. The results show for the first time a high frequency of Taenia serialis not comparable to other Italian studies conducted on wild Carnivora; thus, a new ecological niche is conceivable. These findings suggest a plausible wolf-roe deer cycle for T. serialisin the investigated area.

Rodents living in a subterranean ecotope face a unique combination of evolutionary and ecological pressures and while host species evolution may be driven by the selective pressure from the parasites they harbour, the parasites may be responding to the selective pressures of the host. Here, we obtained all available subterranean rodent host–parasite records from the literature and integrated these data by utilizing a bipartite network analysis to determine multiple critical parameters to quantify and measure the structure and interactions of the organisms present in host–parasite communities. A total of 163 species of subterranean rodent hosts, 174 parasite species and 282 interactions were used to create 4 networks with data well-represented from all habitable continents. The results show that there was no single species of parasite that infects subterranean rodents throughout all zoogeographical regions. Nevertheless, species representing the genera Eimeria and Trichuris were common across all communities of subterranean rodents studied. Based on our analysis of host–parasite interactions across all communities studied, the parasite linkages show that community connectance (due to climate change or other anthropogenic factors) appears to show degraded linkages in both the Nearctic and Ethiopian regions: in this case parasites are acting as bell-weather probes signalling the loss of biodiversity.

A survey of parasites of the rough-tailed gecko Cyrtopodion scabrum was carried out in Turkey in order to determine the diversity of ecto- and endoparasites of this host species. The sample of 88 host specimens (36 females, 34 males and 18 juveniles) harboured endoparasites of three species: the cestode Diplopylidium noelleri and the nematodes Physaloptera sp. and Physocephalus sp. One ectoparasite species, Geckobia sp. (Acari), was also recorded. This report represents the first data on parasites of C. scabrum from Turkey. A species of the genus Geckobia sp. is recorded for the first time from Turkey. The present study provides the first parasite records for C. scabrum in its native geographical range. Twenty-four specimens of Pantherophis guttatus (Linnaeus) (corn snake) from North Carolina were examined for endoparasites. Fourteen species of helminths (2 cestodes, 10 nematodes, 2 acanthocephalans) and 1 pentastome are reported, representing 14 new host records and 1 new geographic distribution record. No trematodes were found, and the salvaged tapeworms were morphologically unidentifiable. Capillaria colubra, at 63%, was the most prevalent helminth, followed by Strongyloides serpentis and immature physalopterid larvae, each at 29%. ABSTRACT Members of the order Trypanorhyncha are cestode parasites that are frequently found infecting the muscles of several marine fish species, affecting fish health, and resulting in consumers’ rejection of fish. Fifty-two specimens of marine fish were freshly caught throughout the year 2020 from boat landing sites at the Alexandria coast along the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt, including the grey trigger fish Balistes carolinensis (F: Balistidae); the mottled grouper Mycteroperca rubra (F: Serranidae) and the common sole Solea vulgaris (F: Soleidae). Blastocysts were isolated and ruptured; the generated pleurocerci were described morphologically and morphometrically by light and scanning electron microscopy. Also, multiple-sequence alignment was performed, and a phylogenetic tree was constructed following maximum likelihood analysis of the 18s and 28s ribosomal RNA sequences of the recovered worms. Thirty fish were infected; the infection was recorded as blastocysts embedded in fish flesh. Three different parasitic species were recovered and classified morphologically as Gymnorhynchus isuri, Pseudotobothrium dipsacum and Heteronybelinia estigmena. The taxonomic position of these parasites was justified by molecular analysis of their 18s and 28s rRNAs, which revealed high percentages of homology with species recovered from the GenBank. The accession numbers ON157059, ON139663 and ON139662 were respectively assigned to the recovered parasites after their deposition in GenBank. The results obtained from the molecular analyses confirmed the morphological records of the recovered parasites. Since metacestodes are found in the musculature of infected fish specimens, it is necessary to remove these areas in the commercialization of fish.

Abstract The study describes the occurrence of cysticercosis in liver of 22 wild agoutis (Dasyprocta leporina) in the Brazilian Amazon. The phylogenetic analysis and microscopic characteristics of metacestodes in liver tissue sections, associated with the geographic distribution of the intermediate hosts indicated that a possibly novel Taenia sp. metacestode caused the parasitism. Additionally, two cases of hepatic co-infection by Taenia sp., Calodium sp. and Echinococcus oligarthra were also observed among the analyzed animals. The results point to the need for a better understanding of hepatotropic parasites among wild rodents in the Brazilian Amazon.

Between 2000 and 2022, a study in Uzbekistan examined 1822 amphibians (624 Bufotes genus, 1198 Pelophylax genus) to assess helminth biodiversity. Species studied included Perrin's Green Toad, Pewzow's Toad, Turan Toad, Terentiev Water Frog, Pelophylax sp., and Pelophylax terentievi × Pelophylax sp. hybrid. The study revealed the presence of 66 species of parasitic helminths, including those from the classes Cestoda, Trematoda, Acanthocephala, and Nematode, in Uzbekistan's amphibians. Notably, the genus Bufotes and the genus Pelophylax were newly identified as hosts for 14 helminth species in the country. The biological diversity of amphibian helminths in Uzbekistan consists of 66 species, with varying distribution: 42 in the North-Eastern region, 40 in the Eastern region, 38 in the Southern region, 25 in the Central region, and 17 in the North-Western region. Recent advances have increased our understanding of the molecular machinery in the cytoskeleton of mammalian cells, in contrast to the case of tapeworm parasites, where cytoskeleton remains poorly characterized. The pertinence of a better knowledge of the tapeworm cytoskeleton is linked to the medical importance of these parasitic diseases in humans and animal stock. Moreover, its study could offer new possibilities for the development of more effective anti-parasitic drugs, as well as better strategies for their surveillance, prevention, and control. In the present review, we compile the results of recent experiments on the cytoskeleton of these parasites and analyze how these novel findings might trigger the development of new drugs or the redesign of those currently used in addition to supporting their use as biomarkers in cutting-edge diagnostic tests. In the year 2012 a total of seven individuals (one bull and six cows) of European bison (Bison bonasus) were introduced to a fenced 200 ha area in a forest district (Almindingen, Island Bornholm, Denmark) in the Baltic Sea. In 2017 the herd was supplemented by introduction of another bull. The animals all originated from a population in the Polish Bialowieza forest. Faecal samples were recovered with intervals and subjected to a copro-parasitological investigation (applying egg flotation, sedimentation and Baermann technique). In addition, parasites were sampled during necropsy of animals euthanized or found dead three years after introduction. The animals carried a range of parasite types including trematodes (liver fluke Fasciola and rumen fluke), cestodes (Moniezia), nematodes (Dictyocaulus viviparus, trichurids, and other gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) including Trichostrongylus axei and Haemonchus contortus). Egg and larval morphology also suggested presence of GIN genera Nematodirus, Ostertagia and Cooperia. The trematodes did not establish a life cycle in the recipient area, as judged by examination of calves born in the new area, but the cestode and several nematode species occurred in these animals. Especially Dictyocaulus viviparus was successfully spread and occurred together with GIN at moderate to high infection intensities at most sampling points. The reproduction among bison in the herd was high during the first few years. The exact birth rate is unknown but up to 24 calves are believed to be born during the ten year study period. Mortality among adults and calves occurred and in early June 2022 the total number of live animals was 11 (seven males, three females, one calf). The possible impact of the parasite infections on the bison health and future wildlife infection status is discussed.

Phylogenetically or taxonomically related hosts may harbour similar parasite communities due to phylogenetic conservatism. In addition, host attributes may favour their exposure to parasites. This study aimed to characterize the helminth fauna of sigmodontine rodents in an Atlantic Forest area in northeastern Brazil and determine the pattern of the helminth metacommunity structure. The influence of host attributes and host taxonomy on the metacommunity structure was also investigated. The most abundant helminth species were Raillietina sp. and Hassalstrongylus lauroi. Euryoryzomys russatus was the most infected host species for helminth parasites, as approximately 81% (35/43) of the animals were infected by at least one helminth species. The helminth metacommunity structure was coherent at both the infracommunity and the component community scales, indicating that species responded to the same environmental gradient. A quasi-Clementsian pattern was observed for the infracommunities, indicating the occurrence of compartments of parasite species that were substituted along the environmental gradient, which was formed by host individuals. A quasi-Gleasonian pattern was found at the component community scale, showing random boundary clumping, which is consistent with the individualistic responses of parasite species to each host species. These patterns corroborated the high values of beta-diversity observed, indicating high species turnover among communities at both scales. Host taxonomic distance was the most important variable explaining the patterns of the helminth metacommunity structure.

Introduction: Species of Fimbriaria are common tapeworms of ducks (Anseriformes). In this study, cestode specimens identified as F. fasciolaris, F. czaplinskii and F. teresae from the Helminthological Collection of IZSHK are re-examined and newly collected cestodes of the genus Fimbriaria from various anseriform birds in Ukraine are examined. Methods: Cestode specimens were studied using light microscopy. For two of these species, Fimbriaria fasciolaris and Fimbriaria teresae, partial sequences of the genes 18S, 28S, COX1 and NAD were obtained. Also, archived specimens from Ukrainian and Poland were also studied and partly re-identified. Results: The revision of all collected cestodes identified as Fimbriaria spp. revealed that species of the genus differ by the morphology of the copulative apparatus. One of the most widely distributed African freshwater fish is the African sharptooth catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) that is naturally distributed in 8 of the 10 ichthyofaunal regions of this continent. Clarias gariepinus is a highly valued and cheap staple to local communities and an ideal aquaculture species. Consequently, interest in the parasitic communities of C. gariepinus has increased as parasites may accidentally be ingested by humans when eating uncooked fish or can be introduced into culture systems through fish stocks supplied from local rivers which affect yield, growth, and marketability. This review provides an overview of the ∼107 metazoan parasite species known to parasitise C. gariepinus in Africa and their general life cycles, morphology, paratenic and post-cyclic infections, and the biogeography and validity of records are discussed. Thirty-eight individuals of Anatololacerta anatolica (Werner, 1902) (17 males, 20 females, and 1 juvenile) were collected by hand from western Provinces of Türkiye and the following helminth species were found: 1 species of Digenea Plagiorchis elegans (Rudolphi, 1802) Braun, 1902, 1 species of Cestoda Mesocestoides sp. (tetrathyridia), and 4 species of Nematoda Skrjabinodon medinae, Skrjabinelazia hoffmanniLi, 1934, Skrjabinelazia taurica, and Spauligodon aloisei. One hundred eighty-three individuals of Glossogobius aureus, native to Lake Taal, Philippines, were collected in 2021–2022. Of these, 4 endohelminths were found and identified: Andracantha gravida (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae), Schyzocotyle acheilognathi (Platyhelminthes: Bothriocephalidae), Azygia sp. (Platyhelminthes: Azygiidae), and Opegaster minima (Platyhelminthes: Opecoelidae). These helminths represent new host records for G. aureus and provide novel contributions to the recent Philippine parasite biodiversity listing. Among these 4 helminths, Azygia sp. was the most prevalent, had the highest percent dominance and mean intensity, and had a broader range followed by S. acheilognathi, A. gravida, and O. minima, respectively. These findings highlight the need to further explore Lake Taal's parasitofauna, especially with regard to the invasion of S. acheilognathi, and the transmission specificity of O. minima, which can be utilized as a keystone parasite biomarker and in return aid in the management and conservation efforts in Lake Taal. A new species of Mathevotaenia Akumyan, 1946 (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) is described from the Andean tuco-tuco, Ctenomys opimus Wagner 1848 (Rodentia: Ctenomyidae), collected in 1984 on the Altiplano of Bolivia. This is the second species of anoplocephalid cestode recorded from rodents of the genus Ctenomys, the first being Monoecocestus torresi Olsen 1976 from the Maule tuco-tuco, Ctenomys maulinus Philippi 1872, documented in southwestern Argentina. The new species of Mathevotaenia described here has more testes per segment than any other described species of the same genus from South America. The description of a new species from a decades-old specimen highlights the need for continuous examination of museum material as well as the need for collection of new specimens from rapidly disappearing biomes around the world. The aim of our study was to update the information on taxonomic diversity and structure of the parasite community of Antarctic rockcod, Notothenia coriiceps in the coastal water off the Argentine Islands (Wilhelm Archipelago, Graham Land, West Antarctica). The material for this study was collected in 2014-2015 at the Ukrainian Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadsky". More than 8,500 specimens of parasites from 106 host specimens were collected and identified. All fishes were found to be infected with helminths; 25 helminth species were identified. Acanthocephalans were recorded in 93.4 % of hosts; eight species of acanthocephalans (Metacanthocephalus rennicki, M. johnstoni, M. campbelli, M. dalmori, Aspersentis megarhynchus, Corynosoma hamanni, C. pseudohamanni, and C. evae) were found. Nematodes were found in 96.2 % of fishes; larval stages of Pseudoterranova sp., Contraceacum sp., Anisakis sp. and adults Ascarophis nototheniae and Dichelyne fraseri were identified. Trematodes were found in 94.3 % of fishes; seven species (Macvicaria georgiana, Neolebouria antarctica, Lepidapedon garrardi, Genolinea bowersi, Elytrophalloides oatesi, Lecithaster macrocotyle, Derogenes johnstoni) were identified. Larval stages of cestodes (Diphyllobothrium sp. and tetraphyllidean metacestodes) and the monogenean species Pseudobenedenia nototheniae were found. Ultrastructural characters of spermiogenesis and the mature spermatozoon of the cestode Meggittina gerbilli (Cyclophyllidea: Catenotaeniidae), a parasite of the Lesser Egyptian gerbil (Gerbillus gerbillus) and the North African gerbil (Gerbillus campestris) (Rodentia: Muridae) in the Djebel Dahar (South of Tunisia), were studied using transmission electron microscopy. The spermiogenesis of M. gerbilli is of Bâ and Marchand’s type III, which is mainly characterized by a proximodistal fusion of a single flagellum with a cytoplasmic extension. In this catenotaeniid, the proximal fusion is preceded by a 90° rotation of the flagellum. The spermatozoon is a Levron et al. type VI, which presents a single axoneme with the 9 + ‘1’ trepaxonematan pattern, a periaxonemal sheath, two crest-like bodies, twisted cortical microtubules, and a spiraled nucleus. The obtained results show similarities with the remaining studied catenotaeniids, namely Catenotaenia pusilla and Skrjabinotaenia lobata. The results are compared and discussed according to several characteristics found in the catenotaeniids and other studied cyclophyllideans.

In this study, Dwarf Lizard (Parvilacerta parva) is collected in June 2016, 30 (6 females, 24 males) from Ulaş district of Sivas province and 12 (6 females, 6 males) from Çaldıran district of Van province in May 2011 and August 2012 were investigated for helminth parasites. A total of 17 Oochoristica tuberculata (Cestoda) specimens were found in 8 of 42 dwarf lizards. O. tuberculata is a common cestode species in lizards. It is the second helminth study carried out on dwarf lizards in our country and O. tuberculata is a new record for the host Dwarf Lizard (P. parva). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Baltimore-Bullock's Oriole hybrid zone is one of the best-studied avian hybrid zones in North America, yet our understanding of the causes of selection against hybrids remains poor. We examine if endohelminth parasites may cause selection against hybrid orioles but found no evidence for this hypothesis. Of the 139 male orioles we examined, 43 individuals contained endohelminth parasites from at least 1 of these groups: Cestoda, Acanthocephala, or Nematoda. Across the hybrid zone, Baltimore Orioles (Icterus galbula) and Bullock's Orioles (I. bullockii) differed in their parasite communities, such that Baltimore Orioles frequently contained both Acanthocephala and Cestoda parasites whereas Bullock's Orioles primarily contained Cestoda parasites. Despite these differences in parasite communities between parental species, the frequency of hybrid orioles with parasites was similar to parentals, suggesting that hybrids were as susceptible to endohelminth parasites as parentals. Using a subset of 99 adult male orioles, we explored how parasites may be associated with the expression of orange carotenoid-based plumage in hybrids and parentals. Associations between carotenoid-based plumage color and parasites were most strongly expressed in Bullock's Orioles, but patterns were subtle and counterintuitive because individuals with parasites often had more enhanced color measures compared to individuals without parasites. Taken together, these data suggest that endohelminth parasites impose little fitness costs to male orioles on the breeding grounds and likely do not cause selection against hybrids. Ophiotaenia is the most diverse genus among proteocephalids, composed of species commonly found parasitizing snakes worldwide. However, the diversity of Ophiotaenia in the Neotropical region is still underestimated. This study describes Ophiotaenia karipuna n. sp. found parasitizing Erythrolamprus miliaris in the State of Amapá, Brazil. Additionally, we redescribe Ophiotaenia arandasi based on a re-examination of type series and newly collected material from Erythrolamprus taeniogaster in the State of Pará, Brazil. The new species differs from its congeners in the following characteristics: scolex width, number of testes, relative length of the cirrus–sac, absence of a vaginal sphincter, presence of a vestigial apical organ resembling a sucker, and relative size of the ovary in relation to the surface of the proglottid. Furthermore, we provide taxonomic information for Ophiotaenia arandasi not reported in the original description, including morphology of embryophore, uterine development, and the absence of the vaginal sphincter in the species. Ophiotaenia karipuna n. sp. represents the 21st- species described in snakes -from the Neotropical region and the first formally described in the Brazilian Amazon. Additionally, we provide the first ultrastructural analysis, a new host, and locality records for O. arandasi.
