Schwann cells (SCs) are the primary glia of the peripheral nervous system. SCs are involved in many debilitating disorders, including diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Here, we present a strategy for deriving SCs from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) that enables comprehensive studies of SC development, physiology, and disease. hPSC-derived SCs recapitulate the molecular features of primary SCs and are capable of in vitro and in vivo myelination. We established a model of DPN that revealed the selective vulnerability of SCs to high glucose. We performed a high-throughput screen and found that an antidepressant drug, bupropion, counteracts glucotoxicity in SCs. Treatment of hyperglycemic mice with bupropion prevents their sensory dysfunction, SC death, and myelin damage. Further, our retrospective analysis of health records revealed that bupropion treatment is associated with a lower incidence of neuropathy among diabetic patients. These results highlight the power of this approach for identifying therapeutic candidates for DPN.

Photoelectrochemically active WO3 films were fabricated by electrodeposition from an acidic (pH 2), hydrogen-peroxide-containing electrolyte at −0.5 V vs. SCE. WO3-TiO2 composites were then synthesized under the same conditions, but with 0.2 g/L of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (⌀ 36 nm), mechanically suspended in the solution by stirring. After synthesis, the films were annealed at 400 °C. Structural characterization by XRD showed that the WO3 films exhibit the crystalline structure of a non-stoichiometric hydrate, whereas, in WO3-TiO2, the WO3 phase was monoclinic. The oxidation of tungsten, as revealed by XPS, was W6+ for both materials. Ti was found to exist mainly as Ti4+ in the composite, with a weak Ti3+ signal. The efficiency of the WO3 films and composites as an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) photo-electrocatalyst was examined. The composite would generate approximately three times larger steady-state photocurrents at 1.2 V vs. SCE in a neutral 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte compared to WO3 alone. The surface recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs was characterized by intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS). Photogenerated charge transfer efficiencies were calculated from the spectra, and at 1.2 V vs. SCE, were 86.6% for WO3 and 62% for WO3-TiO2. Therefore, the composite films suffered from relatively more surface recombination but generated larger photocurrents, which resulted in overall improved photoactivity.

In many countries, the textile industry remains the major contributor to environmental pollution. Untreated textile dyes discharged into water negatively impact the performance of aquatic organisms and may cause a variety of serious problems to their predators. Effective wastewater treatment is a key to reducing environmental and human health risks. In this work, the Fe/Cu catalysts were used in heterogeneous Fenton’s reaction for the degradation of high concentrations of methyl orange (model azo dye) in aqueous solutions. For the first time, the catalysts were prepared onto commercial copper foams by potentiostatic electrodeposition of iron using an environmentally friendly electrolyte. The influence of electrodeposition conditions, H2O2 concentration, dye concentration and temperature on the model dye degradation was investigated. It was revealed that both the surface area and the catalyst loading play the major role in the effective dye degradation. The experimental results involving spectrophotometric measurements coupled with total carbon and nitrogen quantification suggest that a solution containing up to 100 mg/L of methyl orange can be successfully decolorized within 90 s at 50°C using porous Fe/Cu catalyst in the presence of hydrogen peroxide that largely surpasses the current state-of-the-art performance. Already within the first 10°min, ∼ 30% of total methyl orange concentration is fully mineralized. The described process represents a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly way to treat azo dyes in aqueous solutions.

The electrospark deposition (ESD) technique is a low-heat-input process that has great potential for coating applications and the restoration of damaged high-value parts. Carbon steels are commonly used as a substrate material for ESD coatings. However, we demonstrated that carbon steels could be used successfully as the electrode tool for the ESD process. Furthermore, ESD coatings commonly have a high as–deposited roughness. In view of this, in order to reduce the roughness of the ESD coatings, electrodeposition as a tool to alter surface morphology was investigated. Hence, the micro-leveling power of several electrolytes for Ni, Fe-W, Fe, and Cr electrodeposition were evaluated. The maximum leveling effect was detected for Ni electroplated from the Watts electrolyte. Thus, the novel hybrid coatings based on an ESD layer and a subsequent layer of electrodeposited Ni were obtained. ESD layers were obtained by using the following electrode tools as anodes: several types of carbon steels (St20, St30, and St45), alloys T15K6 (WC + TiC + Co), CuNiZn; and NiCr. The morphology and structure of the obtained hybrid coatings with an electrodeposited Ni top-layer was analyzed and compared to ESD coatings from the point of view of their wear and corrosion behavior. The wear rate of the novel ESD coatings based on carbon steels was comparable with coatings obtained using the NiCr electrode tool. Moreover, for all the studied cases, the corrosion resistance of the hybrid coatings was higher than for their ESD counterparts and close to electrolytic chromium.

WO3 photoanodes are widely used in photoelectrochemical catalysis, but typically the as-synthesized material is annealed before application. It is therefore desirable to explore less energy-intensive treatments. In this study, WO3 films of up to 3.9 μm thickness were obtained by galvanostatic anodization of tungsten foil in a neutral-pH Na2SO4 and NaF electrolyte, also containing a NaH2PO2 additive (to suppress O2 accumulation on the pore walls). Additionally, the WO3 photoanodes were modified by applying a cathodic reduction (H+ intercalation) and anodic activation treatment in-situ. XPS spectra revealed that intercalation modifies WO3 films; the amount of W5+-O and O-vacancy bonds was increased. Furthermore, subsequent activation leads to a decrease of the W5+ signal, but the amount of O-vacancy bonds remains elevated. The as-prepared and reduced (intercalated & activated) films were tested as OER photoanodes in acidic 0.1 M Na2SO4 media, under illumination with a 365 nm wavelength LED. It was observed that thinner films generated larger photocurrents. The peculiarities detected by XPS for reduced films correlate well with their improved photocatalytic activity. Photo-electrochemical impedance and intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopies were combined with steady-state measurements in order to elucidate the effects of H+ intercalation on photoelectrochemical performance. The reduction results in films with enhanced photoexcited charge carrier generation/separation, improved conductivity, and possibly even suppressed bulk recombination. Thus, the intercalation & activation adopted in this study can be reliably used to improve the overall activity of as-synthesized WO3 photoanodes, and particularly of those that are initially poorly photoactive.

Magnetostriction, known as the ability of magnetic materials to expand or contract in response to magnetic field, is a key property of Fe-Ga alloys exploited in various types of transducers. Usually, thin films of Fe-Ga deposited on rigid substrates suffer from a clamping effect that hinders the propagation of strain. Herein, Fe-Ga films with macroporous, not fully constrained, geometry are prepared by electrodeposition on metallized silicon substrates templated with sub-micrometer-sized polystyrene spheres. For comparison, fully-dense and inherently nanoporous films are prepared by sputtering and electrodeposition, respectively. The electrodeposition mechanism is discussed in terms of electrochemically active species distribution and partial current densities. The composition of the Fe-Ga films has been tuned (2–40 at.% Ga) by varying the electrodeposition parameters. A complete assessment of the nanomechanical and magnetic properties of the films with variable composition and porosity has been performed for an optimized performance. The magnetostriction has been studied by X-ray diffraction applying an in-situ magnetic field. The results demonstrate a larger magnetic-field-induced crystal deformation in templated (macroporous) films compared to the non-templated and fully-dense counterparts. The observed effects in porous Fe-Ga films are very appealing for the design of various strain-engineered nanomaterials, e.g., energy transducers or magnetoelectric composites.

One of the methods to improve the performance of a heterogeneous electrocatalyst is the dispersion of a catalytic material on a suitable substrate. In this study, femtosecond laser ablation was used to prepare very rough but also ordered copper surfaces consisting of vertical, parallel ridges. Then, a molybdenum sulfide coating was electrochemically deposited onto these surfaces. It was observed by profilometry that the average roughness of the surface after coating with MoS2 had decreased, but the developed surface area still remained significantly larger than the projected surface area. The electrodes were then used as an electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic media. These were highly efficient, reaching 10 mA cm−2 of HER current at a −181 mV overpotential and a Tafel slope of ~39 mV dec−1. Additionally, scanning electrochemical microscopy was used to observe whether hydrogen evolution would preferentially occur in certain spots, for example, on the peaks, but the obtained results suggest that the entire surface is active. Finally, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data showed the difference in the double-layer capacitance between the ablated and non-ablated surfaces (up to five times larger) as well as the parameters that describe the improved catalytic activity of fs-Cu/MoS2 electrodes.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects ionised water has on embryonic development using Wistar rat animal model. For that purpose, alkaline and acidic water was prepared with a domestic water ioniser. It was found that the concentrations of Cl–, SO42– ions increased in acidic water, while in alkaline water, Ca2+ concentration decreased and halogenated hydrocarbon concentrations exceeded permitted levels. The animals were given test alkaline and acidic water, as well as tap water as control. After three months, female rats were mated. On the 21st day of gestation, they were euthanized and subjected to Caesarean sections; the number of live and dead fetuses was recorded. The fetuses were examined for external or visceral malformations and skeletal abnormalities. The data showed that embryo death was higher in acidic and alkaline experimental groups in comparison to the control group. The fetuses in both test groups were significantly shorter than in the control group. Long bones of fetal hind and front limbs were shorter in the acidic group in comparison to the control group. Retardation of limb osteogenesis was expressed in the acidic group fetuses. Therefore, in our model, ionised water had a negative effect on the embryonic development.

Electrodeposition of Fe-W coatings has been carried out from an environmentally friendly Fe(III)-based glycolate-citrate bath. Samples with tungsten content from 6 to 25 at.% were electrodeposited in a controlled way by changing electrodeposition parameters: current density, pH, and temperature. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the structure of Fe-W coatings transforms from nanocrystalline to amorphous-like as the W content increases and the crystallite size reduces below 10 nm. However, the peculiarities of the structural transitions are linked not only with the W content. Deposition temperature plays a crucial role, due to the different activation energy of crystallization. Following the direct Hall–Petch relation, a maximum hardness of ~10 GPa was found for the alloy with the highest W content, making it comparable to that of electrolytic chromium. The Fe2W intermetallic compound forms at higher W concentration as proven by Mössbauer spectroscopy, and contributes to the increased hardness of these alloys. The alloys retain a soft magnetic character within a wide compositional range, although increasing the W content leads to a reduction of the saturation magnetization. Fe-12 at.% W coatings show an optimum combination of mechanical and magnetic properties, thus making these newly developed coatings appealing environmentally-friendly alternative materials for multi-scale technologies. The electrodeposition of Fe–Co–W alloys was examined using a rotating cylinder Hull (RCH) cell and conditions were determined to create nanowires. The metal ion reduction mechanism was a combination of induced and anomalous codeposition, with water reduction as a gas evolving side reaction, rending deposition into recesses a challenge. In thin film deposition, under kinetic control, the addition of Fe ions into the electrolyte, greatly reduced the Co partial current density, and thus it's content in the deposit. The change of Co partial current density was attributed to an anomalous codeposition behavior, but it had a minimal effect in changing the W wt% in the deposit, despite the expected inducing characteristic of Fe when codeposited with tungsten. Deposition conditions were determined to electrodeposit Fe–Co–W nanowires having similar concentration as the thin films. Nanowires were electrodeposited into polycarbonate membranes under pulsed current at room temperature.

In this study, nanocrystalline Fe-W alloy and Fe-W/Al2O3 composite coatings with various contents of sub-microsized alumina particles have been obtained by electrodeposition from an environmentally friendly Fe(III)-based electrolyte with the aim to produce a novel corrosion and wear resistant material. The increase in volume fraction of Al2O3 in deposits from 2 to 12% leads to the grain refinement effect, so that the structure of the coatings change from nanocrystalline to amorphous-like with grain sizes below 20 nm. Nevertheless, the addition of particles to the Fe-W matrix does not prevent the development of a columnar structure revealed for all the types of studied coatings. The observed reduction in both hardness and elastic modulus of the Fe-W/Al2O3 composites is attributed to the apparent grain size refinement/amorphization and the nanoporosity surrounding the embedded Al2O3 particles. In the presence of 12 vol% of Al2O3 in deposits, the wear rate decreases by a factor of 10 as compared to Fe-W alloy tested under dry friction conditions due to the lowering of tribo-oxidation. The addition of alumina particles slightly increases the corrosion resistance of the coatings; however, the corrosion in neutral chloride solution occurs through the preferential dissolution of Fe from the matrix. The obtained results provide a possibility to integrate the nanocrystalline Fe-W/Al2O3 composite coatings into various systems working under dry friction conditions, for example, in high-temperature vacuum systems.

Molybdenum sulphide is an emerging precious-metal-free catalyst for cathodic water splitting. As its active sites catalyse the Volmer hydrogen adsorption step, it is particularly active in acidic media. This study focused on the electrochemical deposition of MoS2 on copper foam electrodes and the characterisation of their electrocatalytic properties. In addition, the electrodeposition was modified by adding a reducing agent—sodium hypophosphite—to the electrolyte. To reveal the role of hypophosphite, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was carried out in addition to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). MoS2 films, electrodeposited at various charges passed through the cell (catalyst loadings), were tested for their catalytic activity towards hydrogen evolution in 0.5 M H2SO4. Polarisation curves and Tafel slope analysis revealed that the electrodeposited MoS2 films are highly active. Namely, Tafel slopes fell within the 40–50 mV dec−1 range. The behaviour of as-deposited films was also evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy over a wide overpotential range (0 to −0.3 V), and two clear time constants were distinguished. Through equivalent electrical circuit analysis, the experimental data were fitted to the appropriate model, and the obtained values of the circuit components were examined as a function of overpotential. It was found that the addition of NaH2PO2 into the electrodeposition solution affects the intrinsic activity of the material. Finally, a method is proposed to approximate the number of active sites from impedance data.

Photo-/electrochemical water splitting can be a suitable method to produce "green" hydrogen and oxygen by utilizing renewable energy or even direct sunlight. In order to carry out photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, a photoanode based on transition metal oxides, which absorbs photons and produces photoexcited electron–hole pairs, is needed. The positively charged holes can then participate in the water oxidation reaction. Meanwhile, a cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can occur more efficiently with electrocatalytic materials that enhance the adsorption of H+, such as MoS2. In this study, it was shown that WO3/MoSx heterostructured materials can be synthesized by an electrochemical method called plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). During this process, many micro-breakdowns of the oxide layer occur, causing ionization of the oxide and electrolyte. The ionized mixture then cools and solidifies, resulting in crystalline WO3 with incorporated MoSx. The surface and cross-sectional morphology were characterized by SEM-FIB, and the coatings could reach up to 3.48 μm thickness. Inclusion of MoSx was confirmed by EDX as well as XPS. Synthesis conditions were found to have an influence on the band gap, with the lowest value being 2.38 eV. Scanning electrochemical microscopy was used to map the local HER activity and correlate the activity hotspots to MoSx's content and surface topography. The bifunctional catalyst based on a WO3/MoSx heterostructure was evaluated for PEC and HER water-splitting activities. As a photoanode, it could reach up to 6% photon conversion efficiency. For HER in acidic media, a Tafel slope of 42.6 mV·dec−1 can be reached. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The preparation of Fe-particles by reduction of FeSO4 with either sodium borohydride or lithium triethylborohydride in water, and reverse micelles in rapeseed and mineral oil phases is described in electrochemical terms. The influence of surfactants on the electrochemical parameters and resulting size of iron particles was studied as well. The resulting size of Fe-particles synthesized in water (with and without surfactants) correlates with the determined values of open circuit potential (OCP): the more negative OCP, the obtained Fe-particles are bigger, because values of OCP correspond to different range of polarization determined for the reduction of Fe2+. The sizes of Fe-particles synthesized in water or oil phases without surfactants using LiBEt3H are less than using NaBH4 because of electrochemical factors. By varying oils and surfactants it is possible to obtain opposite results as in water phase: smaller Fe-particles obtained using NaBH4 than using LiBEt3H. It is explained by the simultaneous influence of electrochemical and steric stabilization factors, and the last one becomes dominating in some cases.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5755/j01.ms.18.3.2429
