Search

The species of the water scavenger beetle genus Oocyclus Sharp are reviewed for the Guiana Shield region of South America. Seven species are recorded, including one here described as new: Oocyclus paraiso sp. n. from the Brazilian state of Pará. New records of previously described species are also reported for Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname. The aedeagus of O. coromoto Short & García is illustrated for the first time. As with all other known members of the genus, all Guiana Shield species are hygropetric habitat specialists. A key to the Oocyclus of the Guiana Shield is provided.

The universal access to electricity is a very important issue for the country because it is directly related to economic and social development. In this context, Energisa Mato Grosso do Sul, which holds the power concession and distribution for the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, is looking for technical solutions economically viable to universalize the rural area at the Pantanal Sul-Matogrossense that presents challenges due to its extremely peculiar geographical, climatic and environmental characteristics. Therefore, this paper aims to subsidize the planning stages and cadastral survey of individual properties from the South Pantanal area, using geospatial techniques. These techniques include the cartographic mapping of the study area, the spatial analysis of georeferenced data and the development and customization of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The results are almost 35 thousand linear kilometers of access roads and more than 16 thousand buildings have been mapped, of which at least 29% are still not served by the electricity distribution network. Systems to subsidize the navigation and cadastre the isolated properties were also customized and developed. All of these inputs that allowed the planning and survey steps in the field are carried out with greater efficiency and assertiveness

Berosus illuviosus sp. n. can be distinguished from other Neotropical species of Berosus by the following combination of characteristics: moderate size (4.30–4.40 mm); head, pronotum and elytra dark brown to black, without metallic luster (Fig. 5a); pronotum with coarse, round or polygonal punctures (Fig. 5a); elytral striae well-impressed with deep, rectangular punctures ca. 2–3× as large as those on the pronotum (Fig. 5a); mesoventral process strongly raised, with straight and hood-like anterior tooth, excavated in the center, with serrated margins (Fig. 5d); abdominal ventrites crenulate along lateral and posterior margins; first ventrite with a median longitudinal carina on anterior two-thirds; fifth ventrite with apical notch ca. one-fifth the total length, bearing two medial acute teeth (Fig. 5e). Description. Size and form. Total length: 4.34–4.36 mm. Body short, nearly 2× longer than wide in dorsal view (Fig. 5a), strongly convex in lateral view (Fig. 5b). Color. Labrum, clypeus and frons dark brown to black without metallic luster (Fig. 5a); maxillary palpi yellow with fourth palpomere dark brown, yellow at base (Figs. 5 a–c); pronotum dark brown without metallic luster; scutellar shield dark brown (Fig. 5a); elytra completely dark brown (Fig. 5a); venter of thorax and abdomen dark brown to nearly black (Fig. 5c); femora with pubescent portion dark brown, glabrous portion yellow; tibiae yellow at base, posterior half dark brown; tarsus dark brown with apex and distal region yellow. (Figs. 5 a–c). Head. Clypeus and frons densely and coarsely punctate, punctures ca. 6–7× as large as ommatidia, round or polygonal in shape (Fig. 5a). Frontal carina absent. Eyes strongly prominent (Fig. 5a). Maxillary palpi short, nearly half as long as width of the head, and thick (Figs. 5 a–c). Thorax. Pronotum distinctly narrower than elytra, with coarse and dense punctures, at the same size as those on head, round or polygonal in shape (Fig. 5a). Scutellar shield coarsely punctate with punctures similar in size to those on pronotum. Elytral striae well-impressed with deep, rectangular punctures ca. 2–3× as larger as those on the pronotum; interstriae reduced to thin edges on elytral disc; humeral hump prominent (Fig. 5a); elytral apices rounded (Figs. 5 a–c); spine-like hairs absent (Fig. 5a). Mesoventral process strongly raised, with straight and hood-like anterior tooth, excavated in the center with serrated margin; posterior angle of the mesoventral process rounded in lateral view, very shortly prominent, serrated (Fig. 5d). Metaventral process narrow; posterolateral angles not produced; posterior angle not raised (Fig. 5c). Basal pubescence on femora reduced, obliquely limited to the base (Fig. 5c). Protarsus of male without adhesive soles; first tarsomere ca. 1.5× longer than the second, fourth tarsomere elongate, almost as long as tarsomeres 1–3 combined (Figs. 5a, c). Claws weakly arched (Figs. 5 a–c). Abdomen. First ventrite with a median longitudinal carina along anterior two-thirds, without lateral depressions; abdominal ventrites 2–4 without central carina or teeth-like projection, crenulate along lateral and posterior margins; fifth ventrite with apical notch ca. one-fifth the total length, bearing two medial acute teeth (Fig. 5e). Aedeagus with basal piece ca. half of total length, 1.5× longer than its greatest width (Figs. 5 f–h); parameres symmetrical, slightly longer than median lobe in dorsal view (Fig. 5f), gradually acuminate at apex; apical portion of parameres strongly curved towards ventral face, forming a nearly right angle with dorsal outline of aedeagus in lateral view (Fig. 5g), bearing a row of long hairs in the subapical concave portion (Figs. 5g, h); median lobe abruptly swollen subapically in dorsal view, apex strongly acuminate in lateral view, directed towards ventral face (Figs. 5g, h). Etymology. The specific epithet, illuviosus, refers to the “dirty” appearance of the specimens of this species (From Latin “which cannot be washed”). Distribution. Brazil (Roraima). Biology. The specimens were collected in ponds with abundant macrophyte cover (Figs. 1, 2). Taxonomic comments. Berosus illuviosus sp. n. can be placed in the holdhausi -complex (Oliva 1989; Oliva & Short 2012), based on the following characteristics: very coarse dorsal sculpture; elytra with humeral humps prominent and without spine-like hairs; abdominal ventrites medially carinate on most of first ventrite length, without lateral depressions; apical notch of fifth ventrite produced at the bottom into a pair of sharp teeth with lateral and posterior margins strongly crenulate; protarsus of males not strongly swollen at base and without soles of specialized adhesive hairs; male genitalia with aedeagus weakly compressed laterally, parameres parallel and acuminate, median lobe strongly curved and strongly swollen at apex. The species is similar to B. rectangulus Mouchamps, 1960 by the dorsal sculpture, size and shape of femoral pubescence and appearance of abdominal ventrites, but it is distinguished by the dorsal coloration, shape of the mesoventral process and male genitalia. Berosus illuviosus sp. n. has a dark brown to black dorsal coloration, without spots (Fig. 5a), while B. rectangulus has a yellow dorsal coloration with dark brown spots. In addition, these species can be differentiated by the anterior tooth of the mesoventral process which is stronger and straight with serrated margins in B. illuviosus sp. n. (Fig. 5d), while in B. rectangulus the anterior tooth is of laminar form with smooth margins, and by the shape of the parameres. In B. illuviosus sp. n. they have a more pronounced preapical curvature, forming a nearly right angle with dorsal outline of aedeagus in lateral view (Fig. 5g) while in B. rectangulus the parameres curl gradually, exhibiting a more discrete curve.

As a contribution to knowledge of the aquatic beetles of the Neotropical Region, the genus Berosus Leach is recorded for the first time from Roraima State in northern Brazil. Three new species are described and illustrated: Berosus illuviosus sp. n., B. parvus sp. n., and B. andreazzei sp. n. In addition, we present a checklist of the Berosus species collected in 26 ponds in the savanna area of the State of Roraima, with 12 new species records for the state, five of which are also new country records for Brazil.

Diagnosis. Berosus andreazzei sp. n. can be distinguished from other Neotropical species of Berosus by the following combination of characteristics: small size (2.57–2.59 mm); clypeus yellow with small dark-brown area on the middle, frons yellow with dark-brown lateral area; pronotum yellow with small discal dark-brown spot; elytra with small dark-brown spots, without dorsal metallic luster, with small dark-brown spots (Fig. 4a); pronotum with fine round punctures (Fig. 4a); elytral striae well-impressed with round punctures ca. 2× larger than those on the pronotum (Fig. 4a); mesoventral process laminar with short curved anterior tooth, directed downwards and backwards with smooth margins (Fig. 4d); abdominal ventrites not crenulate along lateral and posterior margins; first ventrite medially carinate along its whole length; fifth ventrite with apical notch ca. one-quarter the total length, bearing two median short teeth (Fig. 4e). Description. Size and form. Total length: 2.57–2.59 mm. Body short, nearly 2× longer than wide in dorsal view (Fig. 4a), moderately convex in lateral view (Fig. 4b). Color. Labrum and clypeus yellow with small dark brown area on the middle, frons yellow with dark brown lateral area, without metallic luster (Fig. 4a); maxillary palpi yellow with apical palpomere dark brown at apex (Figs. 4 a–c); pronotum yellow with small discal dark brown spot without metallic luster; scutellar shield yellow (Fig. 4a); elytra yellow with small dark brown spots (Fig. 4a); venter of thorax and abdomen dark brown (Fig. 4c); femora with pubescent portion darkened, glabrous portion yellow; tibiae and tarsus yellow (Figs. 4 a–c). Head. Clypeus and frons sparsely and finely punctate, punctures ca. 2× as large as ommatidia, round in shape (Fig. 4a). Frontal carina absent. Eyes slightly prominent (Fig. 4a). Maxillary palpi short, nearly half as long as width of the head, and thick (Figs. 4 a–c). Thorax. Posterior margin of pronotum as wide as basal margin of elytra, with fine, round, and moderately dense punctures, similar in size as those on head (Fig. 4a). Scutellar shield densely punctate with punctures similar in size to those on the elytra. Elytral striae well-impressed with round punctures ca. 2× larger than those on the pronotum; interstriae flat on elytral disc, ca. 2× as wide as striae, sparsely and finely punctate (punctures smaller than those on pronotum); humeral hump not prominent (Fig. 4a); elytral apices rounded (Figs. 4 a–c); spine-like hairs absent (Fig. 4a). Mesoventral process laminar with short and curved anterior tooth, directed downwards and backwards, with smooth margins; posterior angle of the mesoventral process weakly raised in lateral view, not prominent (Fig. 4d). Metaventral process wide, carinate before median depression, posterolateral angles produced into rounded laminae, posterior angle not raised (Fig. 4c). Basal pubescence on two-thirds of mesofemora and three-quarters of metafemora, limit oblique (Fig. 4c). Protarsus of male with adhesive soles in tarsomeres 1–2, first tarsomere ca. 1.5× longer than second, fourth tarsomere elongate, almost as long as tarsomeres 1–3 combined (Figs. 4a, c). Claws weakly arched (Figs. 4 a–c). Abdomen. First ventrite medially carinate in its whole length, without lateral depressions; abdominal ventrites 2–4 without central carina or teeth-like projection, not crenulate along lateral and posterior margins; fifth ventrite with apical notch ca. one-quarter the total length, bearing two short median teeth (Fig. 4e). Aedeagus somewhat compressed laterally, with basal piece ca. four-fifths of total length, 2.2× longer than its greatest width (Figs. 4 f–h); parameres asymmetrical, slightly longer than median lobe in dorsal view (Fig. 4f); right paramere overlapping transversely the left paramere in dorsal view (with apex of aedeagus pointing upwards as in Fig. 4f); apical portion of parameres in lateral view evenly curved towards ventral face (Figs. 4g); ventral face of parameres bearing a row of short hairs along subapical portion (Figs. 4f); bearing a row of hairs in the subapical concave portion (Figs. 4g, h); most part of the median lobe hidden by parameres in dorsal view, in lateral view apex strongly acuminate, directed towards ventral face (Figs. 4g, h). Etymology. The new species was named in memory of Dr. Ricardo Andreazze who presented us with his friendship, contributions, and encouragement to the knowledge of the insects, especially for his passion for the Amazon. Distribution. Brazil (Roraima). Biology. The specimens were collected in ponds with abundant macrophyte cover (Figs. 1, 2). Taxonomic comments. B. andreazzei sp. n. can be placed in the sticticus -complex (Oliva 1989; Oliva & Short 2012) based on the following characteristics: dorsal sculpture fine (varying from coarse to fine in the complex); elytra with humeral humps not prominent and without spine-like hairs; abdominal ventrites medially carinate behind metacoxae without lateral depressions in the first ventrite; protarsus of males with soles on the two basal tarsomeres, which are weakly swollen (weakly to moderately swollen in the complex); and male genitalia on which parameres are acuminate, and median lobe weakly curved (strongly or weakly curved in the complex). The new species is similar to Berosus llanensis Oliva & Short, 2012 and Berosus guyanensis Queney, 2006 in the combination of the following characters: body length, shape of first abdominal ventrite and notch in the fifth abdominal ventrite. B. andreazzei sp. n. differs from B. llanensis especially by the shape of the meso- and metaventral processes. B. andreazzei sp. n. has a laminar mesoventral process with short anterior tooth directed downward and backward (Fig. 4d), and a wide metaventral process with posterolateral angles produced into rounded laminae and posterior angle not raised (Fig. 4c), while in B. llanensis the mesoventral process having a large and straight anterior tooth, directed downwards and metaventral process small with posterolateral angles produced into small triangular laminae and posterior angle raised into a rounded lamina, convex in lateral view. In addition, B. andreazzei sp. n. differs from B. guyanensis and all other species of the sticticus -complex by having the male genitalia with asymmetric parameres, the right paramere being positioned transversally over the left paramere (Fig. 4f).

Berosus parvus sp. n. can be distinguished from other Neotropical species of Berosus by the following combination of characteristics: small size (2.40–2.50 mm); clypeus yellow with small dark brown triangle on the middle of posterior margin, frons entirely dark brown or with large dark-brown spot on the median area; pronotum yellow with one discal dark-brown spot and elytra yellow with small dark-brown spots, without metallic luster (Fig. 6a); pronotum with fine, round punctures (Fig. 6a); elytral, striae well-impressed with round punctures ca. 2× as large as those on the pronotum (Fig. 6a); mesoventral process laminar with very short curved anterior tooth, directed downwards and backwards, with smooth margins (Fig. 6d); abdominal ventrites not crenulate along lateral margins, posterior margins crenulate; first ventrite medially carinate along its whole length; fifth ventrite with apical notch ca. one-quarter the total length, bearing a single short median tooth (Fig. 6e). Description. Size and form. Total length: 2.44–2.47 mm. Body short, nearly 2.2× longer than wide in dorsal view (Fig. 6a), moderately convex in lateral view (Fig. 6b). Color. Labrum slightly yellow; clypeus yellow with small dark-brown triangle on the middle of posterior margin; frons entirely dark brown or with a large dark-brown spot on median area, without metallic luster (Figs. 6a); maxillary palpi yellow with fourth palpomere dark brown at apex (Figs. 6 a–c); pronotum yellow, with one discal dark-brown spot without metallic luster; scutellar shield slightly darkened (Fig. 6a); elytra yellow with small dark brown spots (Fig. 6a); venter of thorax and abdomen dark brown (Fig. 6c); femora, tibiae and tarsus entirely yellow (Figs. 6 a–c). Head. Clypeus and frons sparsely and finely punctate, punctures ca. 2× as large as ommatidia, round in shape (Fig. 6a). Frontal carina absent. Eyes slightly prominent (Fig. 6a). Elytral striae well-impressed with round punctures ca. 2× larger than those on pronotum; interstriae flat on elytral disc, ca. 2× as wide as striae, sparsely and finely punctate (punctures smaller than those on pronotum); humeral hump not prominent (Fig. 6a); elytral apices rounded (Figs. 6 a–c); spine-like hairs absent (Fig. 6a). Mesoventral process laminar with very short, curved anterior tooth, directed downwards and backwards with smooth margins; posterior angle of the mesoventral process weakly raised in lateral view, not prominent (Fig. 6d). Metaventral process narrow, carinate before median depression, posterolateral angles produced into small rounded laminae; posterior angle not raised (Fig. 6c). Basal pubescence on two-thirds of mesofemora and three-fourths of metafemora, limit oblique (Fig. 6c). Protarsus of male with adhesive soles in tarsomeres 1–2, first tarsomere ca. 1.5× longer than second, fourth tarsomere elongate, almost as long as tarsomeres 1–3 combined (Figs. 6a, c). Claws weakly arched (Figs. 6 a–c). Abdomen. First ventrite medially carinate its whole length, without lateral depressions; abdominal ventrites 2–4 without central carina or tooth-like projection, not crenulate along lateral margins; posterior margins crenulate; fifth ventrite with apical notch ca. one-quarter the total length, bearing a single short median tooth (Fig. 6e). Aedeagus compressed laterally with basal piece ca. three-quarters of total length, 2.4× longer than its greatest width (Figs. 6 f–h); parameres symmetrical, as long as median lobe in dorsal view, subcylindrical (Fig. 6f); apical portion of parameres curved towards ventral face, obliquely directed regarding dorsal outline of aedeagus in lateral view, bearing a ventral row of short hairs along subapical portion (Figs. 6g, h); median lobe cylindrical, not swollen subapically, apex with small hole in the median region in dorsal view (Fig. 6f). Etymology. The specific epithet, parvus, refers to the very small size of specimens (From Latin “ parvus ”, little, small). Distribution. Brazil (Roraima). Biology. The specimens were collected in ponds with abundant macrophyte cover (Figs. 1, 2). Taxonomic comments. B. parvus sp. n. can be placed in the sticticus -complex (Oliva 1989; Oliva & Short 2012), based on the following characteristics: dorsal sculpture fine (varying from coarse to fine in the complex); elytra with humeral humps not prominent and without spine-like hairs; abdominal ventrites medially carinate behind metacoxae without lateral depressions in first ventrite; protarsus of males with soles on the two basal tarsomeres, which are weakly swollen (weakly to moderately swollen in the complex); and male genitalia on which the aedeagus is somewhat compressed laterally, with parameres parallel and acuminate, with median lobe weakly curved (strongly or weakly curved in the complex). The new species is similar to B. olivae Queney, 2006 by the body length, dorsal coloration and shape of the apical emargination of the fifth ventrite, but they can be differentiated by the shape of male genitalia. In B. parvus sp. n. the aedeagus is subcylindrical in dorsal view (Fig. 6f) and sigmoidal in lateral view (Fig. 6g); the basal piece corresponds to ca. three-quarters of the total length (Figs. 6g, h); the median lobe is cylindrical and has a hole at apex (Fig. 6f); in B. olivae, the aedeagus gradually narrows along its distal third; the basal piece corresponds to a little more than half the total genitalia length. B. parvus sp. n. is also similar to B. subandinus Oliva, 1989 by the shape of the male genitalia in lateral view and length of the basal piece, but B. parvus sp. n. has wide parameres in the distal three-quarters of its length (Figs. 6 f–h), while in B. subandinus the parameres are narrow and have a marked notch in the distal 4/5 of its length. In addition, B. parvus sp. n. has a narrow metaventral process, which is carinate before the median depression with posterolateral angles produced into small rounded laminae (Fig. 6c) and the apical emargination of the fifth abdominal ventrite bears a single medial tooth (Fig. 6e), while B. subandinus has a wide metaventral process with posterolateral angles not produced and apical emargination of the fifth abdominal ventrite with two teeth in the medial region. The new species is similar to B. guyanensis in dorsal coloration, punctuation of the head, pronotum, elytra and shape of mesoventral process. However, B. parvus sp. n. has the first abdominal ventrite carinate along its entire length medially and apical emargination of the fifth abdominal ventrite with a single medial tooth (Fig. 6e), while B. guyanensis has the first abdominal ventrite carinate on anterior one-third and apical emargination of the fifth abdominal ventrite with two medial teeth. In addition, B. parvus sp. n. has a subcylindrical aedeagus with the same thickness from base to apex (Figs. 6f, h), basal piece reaching three-quarter of the total length (Figs. 6 g–h) and parameres with the same length as the median lobe (Fig. 6f, h), while in B. guyanensis the male genitalia narrows abruptly at four-fifths of total length, the basal piece reaches four-fifths of total length and the parameres are larger than the median lobe. The species also similar to B. sticticus Boheman, 1859, but differs from this species by the shape of the mesoventral process, carina of first ventrite and apical notch of fifth abdominal ventrite. B. parvus sp. n. has the mesoventral process with very short, curved anterior tooth, directed downwards and backwards, posterior angle weakly raised in lateral view, not prominent (Fig. 6d), while B. sticticus has a mesoventral process with a large and wide tooth, directed downwards and prominent posterior angle in lateral view. In addition, B. parvus sp. n. has the first ventrite medially carinate in its whole length and the fifth ventrite has apical notch with single short median tooth (Fig. 6e), while B. sticticus the first ventrite is carinated in the anterior third and the apical notch of the fifth ventrite has two adjacent teeth. These species also differ in the shape of the male genitalia, in B. parvus sp. n. the length of the basal piece is three-quarters of the total length (Figs. 6g, h) and the median lobe is as long as the parameres (Figs. 6f, h), while in B. sticticus the basal piece is about half of total length and median lobe shorter than the parameres.

Pronotal and elytral margins broad (Fig. 1A); elytral disc lacking reticulation, appearing polished; elytral striae VII–IX sulcate, striae I–XI with mostly distinct round punctures in longitudinal series; elytral apex round to slightly truncate (Fig. 1A); epipleural angle indistinct; median lobe of aedeagus shorter than parameres, broad, with apex broadened and almost truncate, base 1.4 times broader than apex (Fig. 2A); parameres broad with apex truncate, with slightly prominent internal angle; gonocoxae elongate, with apices truncate (Fig. 2B). Description. Male. Habitus. Medium-sized species. Body oval, broad, weakly convex in lateral view, greatest convexity near elytral mid-length, evenly depressed anteriorly and posteriorly (Fig. 1A). Measurements (n = 20). TL: 4.44–4.95 mm; MW: 2.53–2.80 mm; HL: 0.74–0.95 mm; HW: 1.52–1.73 mm; CL: 0.12–0.17 mm; CW: 0.66–0.76 mm; DD: 0.50–0.59 mm; LW: 0.45–0.63 mm; PL: 0.75–0.81 mm; EL: 3.23– 3.72 mm; EH: 1.25–1.67 mm; EW: 1.23–2.80 mm; PTL: 0.80–0.96 mm; PFL: 1.07–1.21 mm; PFW: 0.29–0.33 mm; PTAL: 0.45–0.50 mm; PTAW: 0.15–0.19 mm. Coloration (Figs. 1 A–C). Head, pronotum and elytra black, with blue metallic reflections (Fig. 1A, B); lateral margins of pronotum and elytra (striae VIII–XI) with reflections bronzy yellow and green. Ventral view dark brown, with bronzy metallic reflections; labial palpomeres and last maxillary palpomere with dark-brown apices; meso and metacoxae darker with orangish-yellow pitches apically; abdominal ventrites VII and VIII reddish brown to dark orange yellow; legs dark yellow to orangish-yellow with dark spots. Sculpture and structure (at a magnification of 120×). Head. 2.0 times wider than long (Fig. 1B); front with two round depressions; frontolateral margins convex, reticulation evident, composed of scale-like sculpticells; vertex and frons with striae evident and sparse punctures separated by 2– 4X diameter of a puncture, frontolateral and postocular margins wrinkled (Fig. 1B); clypeus 1.2 times longer than labrum, with anterior edge nearly straight, frontoclypeal suture with posterior margin sinuous, lateral margins slightly convex (Fig. 1B), reticulation evident, composed of scale-like sculpticells, striae evident throughout the clypeus, punctures sparse, separated by 2– 4X diameter of a puncture; labrum convex, punctation strongly impressed on anterior margin, separated by 1.5–2.0X diameter of a puncture. Thorax. Pronotum. Anterior margin sinuous, posterior margin slightly curved, lateral margins broad and wrinkled (Figs 1A,B); pronotal transverse line strongly impressed with well marked wrinkles anteriorly and posteriorly (Fig. 1 B–D); pronotal disc with well impressed wrinkles and dense micropunctures (Figs 1C, D); punctures present throughout the pronotum, strongly impressed, separated by 1.5–2.0X their diameter (Fig. 1D). Elytra. Striae VII–IX sulcate, intervals I–III with linear disposition basally, intervals I–VI convex; stria XI strictly marginal; elytral margin uniform over almost all of its length, narrowing near epipleural apical angle (Fig. 1A); lateral margin separated from apex by a plica; fine punctation present among elytral intervals I–XI, distance between the nearest punctures 1.5–2.0X diameter of a puncture (Fig. 1E); large punctures of elytral series well marked (Fig. 1E); elytral apex rounded to slightly truncate; epipleural angle slightly distinct, sutural angle distinct (Fig. 1A). Mesoventrite grooved on lateral margin, apex with anterior margin rounded, groove evident in medial portion, extending to the posterior portion; medial pit present; setae present on anterolateral region. Profemur 3.7X longer than maximum width. Protarsus dorsally convex, broad, 2.6–3.0X longer than wide, about 1/ 3X length of protibia. Abdomen. Tergite VIII wider than long, apex rounded, with light yellow setae present on the entire surface, with weak longitudinal carina, ending before reaching apex. Aedeagus (Fig. 2A). median lobe of aedeagus shorter than parameres, broad, in dorsal view with lateral margins sinuous, weakly attenuated at the end of basal 2/3 and then broadened in apical 1/3 towards apex, which is slightly triangular and weakly raised medially; width of median lobe about 0.8 times width of apex of parameres; base 1.4 times broader than apex; in lateral view median lobe thick, dorsally curved. Parameres broad, with apex strongly truncate and slightly prominent internal angle. Female. Sculpture (micropunctures and wrinkles) more evident than in male. Elytral disc free of reticulation, elytral intervals I–XI with fine punctation. Gonocoxae (Fig. 2B) elongate, straight, narrowed at middle, with external and internal margins slightly concave, apex truncate, slightly concave; base wider than apex. Etymology. The specific epithet rhyssonotum refers to the quite evident wrinkles on the pronotum; rhysso (G.) = wrinkled; notum (G.) = the back). Distribution. This species is currently known only from the Barcelos county, Amazonas State, in northern Brazil (Fig. 3 A–C). Habitat. Specimens of this species were collected in streams and pools (Fig. 3 B–C).

Coloration in dorsal view dark brown with light small spots; in ventral view, light brown with abdomen a little darker (Fig. 4 A–B). Head. Head length 0.80–1.04 mm, head width 1.00– 1.10 mm (n=2). Head bowl-shaped, lateral edges with a series of short, thin setae and three long anterior setae (Fig. 4 C–D). Antennae long, almost as long as body, scape stout, twice as long as wide, slightly curved outwards, usually with four long and about 14 short setae and a group of short setae on ventral region; pedicel straight, longer and thinner than scape, 3 × as long as wide, with one strong seta at apex in ventral view; flagellum long, with about 150 flagellomeres (Fig. 5A). Clypeolabrum V-shaped, lobes poorly developed, inner edges almost meeting at their bases, slightly oval at apex in dorsal view; lateral edges without setae; dorsal surface covered by fine, short, sparse setae and four basal setae; palisade setae numerous, thin and long; spine with one small spine on outer edge; ventral surface with five thin setae curved inwards (Fig. 5B); about 14 setae on each lobe; above the cone teeth with a group of short thin microtrichia curved upward (Fig. 5C). Mandibles symmetric, broad, with apex rounded; with a row of 16 long setae on outer edge, a group of small microtrichia on dorsal surface near the base, a brush with 12–14 long, branched setae and several short thin setae arranged in two areas slightly separated from ventral surface, next to the inner edge (Fig. 5 E–F). Maxilla moderately long; galea with oval apex and dense bristle brush with single setae; lacinia triangular-shaped, with 7–8 short, rectangular-shaped teeth. Maxillary palpi long, four-segmented; segment 1 slightly more robust than others, 4× as long as wide, with some sparse setae; segment 2 with fewer setae than segment 1, 3× as long as wide; segment 3 thin and long, with a few sparse setae, on dorsal surface, and five oval areas of sensory organs horizontally arranged in ventral surface; segment 4 with thin sparse setae and a set of sensory organs at apex (Figs. 5D; 6 A–C). Hypopharynx long, socket and keel sclerites contiguous, the basal pair of pores small, positioned laterally to each other; tooth bristles broad, with 4–6 teeth on inner edge; stiff plate with a few fine setae; with 2–3 pairs of comb teeth; claw apparatus with an inner row of 20 pairs of long inwardly curved teeth; cushion area triangle-shaped; ‘hand-like structure’ each with 6–7 long fingers (Fig. 6 F–G). Thorax. Several fine setae with different lengths on lateral edge and few setae on dorsal surface; prothorax more expanded than the other segments, twice as wide as long; mesothorax slightly wider than the other segments, mesothorax and metathorax similar in length. Legs short, with strong spines; fore leg shorter and thinner than others, with a well-developed tibiotarsal organ with pectinate setae (Fig. 6 D–E); femur with a row of about 16 long thin spine-like setae on ventral surface; tibia with about 20 thin setae on ventral surface; tarsal claw with two spines (Fig. 6E). Abdomen. Gently and gradually tapered posteriorly; segments I–VII with some long, thin sparse setae, several fine and short setae and a row of robust short setae on lateral and posterior edges of tergites and sternites. Tergite VI with strong spine-like setae on lateral and posterior edges, and with fine, sparse, short and long setae (Fig. 7A); tergite VIII trapezoid-shaped with posterior apex W-shaped, lateral sclerite slightly rectangular, with anterior apex triangular, moderately covered by setae of different sizes on dorsal surface and one pair of long setae on lateroapical angles (Fig. 7B); tergite IX arch-shaped, with a simple row of setae of different lengths on anterior edge, with sparse short setae on dorsal surface, and with an apical pair of long strong setae projected near the lateral edges; posterior edge of tergite between apical setae rounded (Fig. 7C); sternite VIII trapezoidal-shaped, 3 × as wide as long, with short setae on latero-dorsal edge, without setae on the anterior edge, and some long setae and a row of setae on the posterior edge (Fig. 7D); sternite IX semicircular, with three pairs of long setae on lateral edges, without setae on anterior edge, with several short setae on the lateral edge and with short fine and long strong setae on dorsal surface (Fig. 7E). Spiracle apparatus relatively narrow, upper apical lobes triangular with crenulated edges; surface reticulate, inner atrium, short and broad (Fig. 10C); with four simple anal lobes. Description, pupa. TL 3.8 mm (n=1), well sclerotized, dark brown with small light spots along the body, especially on the abdomen (Fig. 8 A–B). Head strongly sclerotized with fine setae and well-marked ecdysial line; without pronotal processes [= spines of Yoshitomi (2005)]. Pronotum with lateral edges modified into siphons (Fig. 8 C–D), light-yellow, bearing hydrophobic setae at the apex and several microtrichia on the inner region (Fig. 8 C– D); pterothecae with few short sparse setae and a row of long setae on edges. Each abdominal segment with an unaligned row of thin setae and seven transverse light spots on posterior edge, with small granules, in dorsal view (Fig. 9A); a group of setae on each latero-posterior edge of each segment; each abdominal segment covered by small granules and four glabrous regions, in ventral view (Fig. 9B); unaligned row of thin setae on posterior edge and a group of setae on central region of each abdominal segment. Sexual dimorphism present; male attachment organ with short median lobe and with two small opposite hooks with short pointed apical processes (Fig. 9D, F); female attachment organ also with a short median lobe, with hooks and short apical processes hook-shaped (Fig. 9C, E). Biology and habitat. The eggs of this species are not known. Larvae and pupae were observed in macrophyte banks associated with roots of Salvinia auriculata and stems of Marsilea sp. in natural lakes, with riparian vegetation and exposed to sun (Fig. 2 A–F). Larvae maintained in the laboratory passed through at least six instars in 65 days. Before pupation, the mature larva orients its head downwards and contacts the water surface with the tergites and sternites VIII and IX with hydrophobic setae. During this process, the pre-pupa (period during which the larva no longer feeds, is immobile and remains connected to the water surface) breathes atmospheric air using the spiracle apparatus located between the tergites and sternites VIII and IX (Fig. 10 A–C). After one day, the pupa leaves the last-instar exuviae but remains attached to the thoracic portion of the exuviae by the attachment organ. The pupa is aquatic, and it is connected to atmospheric air by a pair of pronotal siphons, and it remains suspended under the water surface with the larval exuviae attached (Fig. 10 D–E). The attached larval exuviae connected with atmospheric air is important because the submerged pupae can remain floating just under the water surface. Under laboratory conditions we observed that when the exuviae are removed the pupa sinks and dies. The pupal stage lasts three to four days (n=85). After emergence, the adult rests on the surface of macrophyte leaves (Fig. 10F). Distribution. Brazil: Amazonas state. Argentina: Buenos Aires, Chaco, Corrientes, Santa Fe and Santiago del Estero provinces.

Se identifican una serie de microhábitats relacionados con las aguas dulces, y su respectiva clasificación habitalógica, mediante la propuesta de una disciplina científica denominada habitalogía. Se agrupan en un conjunto de sistemas: sistema de manto residual de hojarasca, sistema de escorrentía, sistema fitotelmata, sistema termal, sistema troglobio, sistema morichal y sistema antropógeno y se mantienen los ya establecidos como los sistemas limnicos (léntico y lótico). Se estudia una serie de diferentes espacios húmedos presentes en los ecosistemas acuáticos de Venezuela, basados en la recolección de insectos acuáticos y semiacuáticos, en su mayoría coleópteros. Se analizan tres humedales naturales de agua dulce en Venezuela como el ribereño, palustre y lacustre, además de los espacios húmedos generados por la acción antrópica. Entre los espacios húmedos se diferenciaron: Anpógeno, Atrix, Axis, Caenum, Caulae, Ediscon, Folia Decidunt, Glarea, Hercircum, Higropétrico, Humu, Madidu, Petra, Rabpet, Radix, Ramentum, Raupet, Spaqua, Spathis, Supaqua, Termali, Trogli, Xilonaq. Se caracterizan individualmente y se demuestra una asociación, superposición y la localización evidente de cada sistema. Se presenta un cuadro clasificatorio, desde el punto de vista de la habitalogía y un esquema habitalógico de los microhábitat, así como fotografías de los microhábitats.

Haliplus fiorentini sp. n. (Figs. 1–2, 5–12) Type locality. Brazil: Roraima state, Boa Vista county, pond near the RR-205 road (02°52'06.4"N 60°51'57.9"W). Type material. Holotype male (INPA): Brazil: Roraima state, Boa Vista county, pond near the RR-205 road (02°52'06.4"N 60°51'57.9"W), 03.vi.2015, leg. C.J. Benetti, K. Dias-Silva and B.G. Oliveira. Diagnosis. Haliplus fiorentini sp. n. can be distinguished from other neotropical species of Haliplus by the following combination of characteristics: elytra yellow-brown with extensive and well-defined maculation consisting of black patches (Fig. 1); prosternal process parallel, straight, wider and short, about 1.15 times longer than wide at base (Fig. 8); metaventral process with a long diverging groove on each side and not impressed in the middle (Fig. 2), and the median lobe of aedeagus in lateral view curved, subparallel, gradually narrowed, distally elongate and with rounded apex (Fig. 11). Description. Habitus (Fig. 1). Body oval, tapering backwards, widest just behind the shoulders, with narrow pronotum and shoulders slightly pronounced. Measurements (n = 1). TL: 4.0 mm; MW: 2.37 mm; PL: 0.64 mm; PW: 1.39 mm; DE: 0.26 mm; EW: 0.30 mm. Head. Yellow-brown, vague darkening near antennae and between eyes; finely punctured, not punctured in area between eyes; narrower than pronotum, widest across eyes; width between eyes 0.8 × width of one eye. Antennae yellow; placed anterior to eyes; with 11 antennomeres, 1st and 2nd short and broad, 3–11 long, 11th the largest (Fig. 5). Palpi yellow; maxillary palpi with four palpomeres, the last shorter than the penultimate. Genal lines behind eyes double. Pronotum. Yellow-brown, with vague darkened mark in the middle; strongly and densely punctured, anterior punctures small, posterior punctures a little larger; widest at base, narrow towards apex; lateral sides convex, slightly and completely margined; base without plicae. Elytra. Yellow-brown, with extensive and well-defined maculation consisting of black patches; dark marks along suture to first primary puncture row (Fig. 1). Primary puncture rows strong, especially in anterior part, about 30 punctures in first row, fifth elytral puncture row basally impressed; secondary puncture rows dense and moderately strong, in anterior part often in two irregular rows, in basal part of second elytral interval in a single row; all punctures darkened (Fig. 6). Lateral margin completely bordered; shoulders and apical margin not serrate. Ventral side. Brown to yellow-brown, lighter towards coxae. Epipleura yellow-brown, with double row of strong punctures in anterior part and single row of weaker punctures in posterior narrowed part, reaching to the end of sixth sternite. Prosternum margined anteriorly, strongly punctured. Prosternal process parallel, straight, wider and short, about 1.15 times longer than wide at base; anterior edge margined, laterally grooved; moderately strongly and densely punctured (Figs. 2, 8, 9). Metaventral process, on each side, with a long diverging groove and a short groove starting in the lateral groves and continuing towards the middle; moderately punctured, more densely punctured in lateral parts (Fig. 2). Metacoxal plates reaching to end of fourth sternite; densely punctured. Fifth and sixth sternite densely punctured, more extensively punctured near the apex; last sternite punctured on the entire surface, uniformly (Fig. 2). Legs. Yellow-brown. Fore and mid legs: femur basally narrowed, medially enlarged, surface covered with dense, coarse micropunctures; tibia with long hairs on inner margin, apically with two equal spurs; tarsi with 5 tarsomeres, the 5th longest, tarsal claws of equal length. Hind legs: coxal plates enlarged covering trochanter and most of the femoral region; femur broadest at apex; tibia slender with unequal apical spurs, setiferous striole on dorsal face of 1/4 × length, longer apical spur as long as the length of first tarsomere (Fig. 7); tarsi with 5 tarsomeres, 1st the longest, with a pair of equal claws. Male. First three tarsomeres of fore- and midlegs widened and ventrally with a tuft of sucker hairs. Aedeagus: Median lobe in lateral view curved, subparallel, gradually narrowed, distally elongate and with rounded apex; inner margin regularly curved, external margin with a longitudinal groove (Fig. 11). Left paramere in lateral view short and broad, subtriangular, with basal process narrow, and with apex angular; with two long and some short setae at tip (Fig. 10). Right paramere in lateral view slender, moderately curved, base bilobed, apex pointed, with a short distal appendage; inner margin with a series of large setae in the apical two thirds (Fig. 12). Etymology. This species is named in honor of Gelson Luiz Fiorentin, a good friend and colleague, in gratitude for all the shared moments during our long friendship and in recognition of his contribution to the knowledge of aquatic insects in Brazil. Distribution and habitat. Northern Brazil, currently only known in the state of Roraima (Fig. 21). Specimen was collected in a shallow pond with macrophytes near the shores (Fig. 22). Taxonomic comments. Haliplus fiorentini sp. n. can be distinguished from other neotropical species of Haliplus by the combination of characteristics of elytra, prosternal and metaventral processes and the male genitalia shape. The new species is similar to H. crassus Chapin, 1930, but differs from this species by having a narrow lifted margin of the metaventral process, while in H. crassus the lifted margin is broad; by having, on each side of metaventral process, a short groove starting in the lateral grooves and continuing towards the middle, which is absent in H. crassus and in the male median lobe shape in lateral view, which is narrower, more tapered and curved downward in H. crassus. H. fiorentini sp. n. is also similar to H. mexicanus Vondel & Spangler, 2008, but differs from the latter species in body shape, being more robust and more tapering apically and with shoulders more pronounced, by the metaventral process is wider, and the two species can be especially well distinguished by the male median lobe shape in lateral view (Fig. 11), which is not parallel in the dorsal edge (parallel in H. mexicanus) and with the maximum width in the middle (maximum width is near the apex in H. mexicanus).

Haliplus regili sp. n. can be distinguished from other neotropical species of Haliplus by the following combination of characteristics: elytra brown with extensive but not clearly defined maculation consisting of dark patches (Fig. 3); prosternal process gradually widening anteriorly, slightly narrowed in posterior part; about 1.9 times longer than wide at base (Fig. 16); metaventral process with two well-defined impressions on both sides (Fig. 4) and median lobe of aedeagus in lateral view curved, straight in the apical third, with the apex strongly truncated (Fig. 19). Description. Habitus (Fig. 3). Body oval, tapering backwards, widest just behind the shoulders, with very narrow pronotum and shoulders pronounced. Measurements (n=1). TL: 3.36 mm; MW: 2.13 mm; PL: 0.7 mm; PW: 1.45 mm; DE: 0.26; EW: 0.25 mm. Head. Orange-brown with vague darkening near antennae and between eyes; strongly and densely punctured; narrower than pronotum, widest across eyes; width between eyes 0.9 �� width of eye. Antennae yellow; placed anterior to eyes; with 11 antennomeres, 1st and 2nd short and broad, 3���11 long, 11th the largest (Fig. 13). Palpi yellow; maxillary palpi with four palpomeres, the last shorter than penultimate. Genal lines behind eyes double. Pronotum. Reddish-brown, with two vague dark spots at base; strongly and densely punctured, more strongly impressed along base; widest at base, narrow towards apex; lateral sides convex, not margined; base without plicae. Elytra. Brown, with extensive but not clearly defined maculation consisting of dark patches; dark marks along suture and base not darkened (Fig. 3). Primary puncture rows strongly impressed at base and finely impressed at apex; about 33 punctures in first row; fifth elytral puncture row not extended along base; secondary puncture rows dense and moderately strong, along suture strong, in two irregular rows; all punctures darkened (Fig. 14). Lateral margin completely bordered; shoulders weakly serrate; apical margin not serrate. Ventral side. Reddish-brown, darkened towards coxae. Epipleura reddish-brown, with double row of strong punctures in anterior part and single row of weaker punctures in posterior narrowed part, reaching to the end of fifth sternite. Prosternum bordered anteriorly, strongly punctured in the middle. Prosternal process gradually widening anteriorly, slightly narrowed in posterior part; about 1.9 times longer than wide at base; anterior edge margined, laterally grooved; moderately strongly and densely punctured (Figs. 4, 16, 17). Metaventral process with two well-defined, but slightly confluent impressions on both sides, not impressed in the middle; moderately punctured (Fig. 16). Metacoxal plates reaching to the fifth sternite, densely punctured. Fifth and sixth sternites densely punctured; last sternite punctured only at base (Fig. 4). Legs. Orange-brown to brown. Fore- and mid legs: femur basally narrowed, medially enlarged, surface covered with dense, coarse micropunctures; tibia with long hairs on inner margin, apically with two equal spurs; tarsi with 5 tarsomeres, the 5th longest, tarsal claws of equal length. Hind legs: coxal plates enlarged covering trochanter and most of the femoral region; femur broadest at apex; tibia slender with unequal apical spurs, setiferous striole on dorsal face of 1/5 �� length and longer apical spur as long as the length of first tarsomere (Fig. 15); tarsi with 5 tarsomeres, 1st the longest, with a pair of equal claws. Male. First three tarsomeres of fore- and midlegs widened and ventrally with a tuft of sucker hairs. Aedeagus: Median lobe in lateral view curved, straight in the apical third, wider at base, narrowed towards the apex and slightly widened at tip; apex strongly truncated (Fig. 19). Left paramere in lateral view short and broad, subtriangular, almost as long as wide, with basal process narrow, and with apex angular; with a series of long setae and some sparse setae at the apex (Fig. 18). Right paramere in lateral view slender, moderately curved, base bilobed, apex rounded; inner margin with a series of large setae in the apical two thirds (Fig. 20). Etymology. This species is named in honor of Juan Antonio R��gil Cueto, the PhD supervisor of the first author, a good friend and colleague, in gratitude for all the shared moments during our long friendship and in recognition of his contribution to the knowledge of water beetles. Distribution and habitat. Northern Brazil, currently only known in the state of Roraima (Fig. 21). Specimen was collected in a shallow pond with macrophytes covering the entire surface (Fig. 23). Taxonomic comments. Haliplus regili sp. n. can be distinguished from other neotropical species of Haliplus by the combination of characteristics of elytra, prosternal and metaventral processes and the male genitalia shape. In this work, we studied Trichoptera assemblages in different rivers in NW Spain affected by hydroelectric power stations, and assessed the influence of environmental variables on the distribution of species. Twenty sites in four rivers were sampled during eight sampling campaigns (2001–2002). The fauna was collected with a quantitative Surber sampler. In addition, several physical, chemical and habitat variables were measured at each site. A distance-based redundancy analysis (dbRDA) was done to investigate the relationship between the assemblages and the environmental variables. Assemblage composition was analyzed by non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (NMDS) and differences between groups were tested using the analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) considering two grouping variables, the river basin and the position of the site (location). The SIMPER routine was used to verify species contribution to dissimilarity. A total of 53 taxa of Trichoptera belonging to 16 families were found, 52% of which were Iberian endemics. The dbRDA revealed that altitude, conductivity, total suspended solids, temperature and location were the variables that most influenced the studied fauna. According to the NMDS analysis, significant differences in faunal composition were recorded between up and downstream sites and between river basins. The fauna seems to respond to a longitudinal gradient, but also to the impact of hydropower stations. The main effects we observed were variations in water temperature and changes in fauna composition, which may be due to the presence of hydropower stations.

Claudiella jeaneae sp. n. (Figs. 3–4, 8, 11, 15–16, 21–22, 26) Type locality. Brazil: Minas Gerais state, Carrancas county, “ Cachoeira da Esmeralda ” (21°28'17.8"S 44°42'15.1"W). Type material. Holotype male (INPA): Brazil: Minas Gerais state, Carrancas county, “ Cachoeira da Esmeralda ” (21°28'17.8"S 44°42'15.1"W), 11.iv.2014, leg. N. Hamada, J.M.C. Nascimento and L.M. Fusari. Condition of holotype: stored in ethanol 99% with the dissected male genitalia stored in microvials. Paratypes (18): same data as holotype [one male and one female stored in ethanol, deposited at MZUSP; one male mounted on slides and 15 females stored in ethanol, deposited at INPA]. Diagnosis. Claudiella jeaneae sp. n. can be distinguished from other species of Claudiella by the following combination of characteristics: tooth-like projection on hind edge of metatrochanter conspicuous (Fig. 8); interstices strongly convex; left mandible with outer edge projected; RP vein reaching the oblongum cell in the middle of the rp-mp1 vein (Fig. 26); by the body size (length: 1.93–2.15 mm) and the shape of the male genitalia, with the median lobe, in dorsal view, split longitudinally only in the apical third; in lateral view, with the apex digitiform and continuous (Figs. 21–22). Description. Habitus. (Fig. 3). Shape oval, convex dorsally. Lateral sides of pronotum rounded. Elytra regularly tapering towards the apex. Lateral outline discontinuous between pronotum and elytra. Color. Dorsal surface black with shiny golden colored punctures; ventrally reddish, legs dark reddish (Figs. 3–4). Measurements (n = 16). BL: 1.93–2.15 mm; BW: 1.12–1.28 mm; BR: 1.66–1.77; PL: 0.3 8– 0.47 mm; PW: 0.81–0.95 mm; PR: 1.89–2.44; EL: 1.4–1.58 mm; EW: 1.12–1.28 mm; ER: 1.19–1.29; ELPWR: 1.58–1.75. Head. Frons bearing a pair of longitudinal keels that run from the anterior edge of the eyes to the clypeus. Antennae with nine antennomeres; last antennomere a little shorter than antennomeres 6–8 together. Anterior edge of clypeus truncate and continuous; posterior edge convex; lateral edge parallel; anterolateral angles oblique, almost rounded. Labrum large, with very long recumbent setae anteriorly; anterior edge straight on dorsal surface, slightly sinuous on ventral surface, fringed with long fine filiform setae, absent in the median area; lateral edge curved (Fig. 11). Mandibles asymmetrical: left mandible with a bifid apical non-articulated tooth and a bifid articulated subapical tooth and right mandible with only a bifid apical non-articulated tooth; left mandible with outer edge projected, right mandible with outer edge convex (Figs. 15–16). Maxilla: mala without suture dividing it; with three apical laminar processes and a row of subapical setae; palpus with three palpomeres, palpomere I short, palpomeres II and III longer, similar in length; palpomere III bearing sensilla apically. Labium with fused glossae and paraglossae, bearing long setae along its entire length; prementum short and wide, densely pilose; labial palpi short, with elongated basal segment and two small apical segments. Thorax. Pronotum coarsely punctured with surface microrugose; regularly widened towards the basal third; basal edge with median emargination with two small incisions in the middle; anterior edge strongly sinuous; lateral edges convex, slightly serrate. Scutellar shield very small, triangular. Elytra coarsely punctured with surface microrugose; wider than the base of the pronotum, widest before the middle; punctures arranged in 13 complete clearly marked striae, 12 dorsal and one sublateral, marginal stria; striae of punctures and interstices uneven; interstices strongly convex; humeral callus strongly protuberant; lateral edges slightly serrate only at the base, regularly narrowed towards the apex; apex slightly acute. Metathoracic wings (Fig. 26) fringed around the anterior and posterior edges, except on the costal margin; RP2 vein not reaching the apex of the wing; r1 vein well developed, short, distinctly oblique; ScP vein not distinctly curved, clearly separated from the RA vein; R3 vein extends towards the apex; RP vein slightly marked, reaching the r1 vein. The CuA3+4 vein joins the AA3 vein without change of direction; oblongum cell present; RP vein reaching the oblongum cell in the middle of the rpmp1 vein. Posterior edge of the prosternal process slightly sinuous, almost truncate. Metasternal carina present, extending to the posterior edge of the metaventrite; metaventrite without tubercles. Metacoxae with posterior edge covering the trochanter; metatrochanter with tooth-like projection on hind edge, conspicuous (Fig. 8), with inner lateral edge convex; femora and tibiae with a row of long setae on dorsal face; femora ventrally grooved for reception of tibiae; metafemur with middle third as wide as basal third; tarsal formula 4-4-4, tarsomeres 1–2 short, tarsomeres 3–4 four times longer than tarsomere 2. Abdomen. Ventrites 1–4 with longitudinal carina. Semilunar depression of last abdominal ventrite simple, not prolonged towards the apex, in both sexes. Aedeagus (Figs. 21–22): phallobase with ventral process. Median lobe (dorsal view) split longitudinally but restricted to the apical third, with lateral edges parallel, converging towards the apex, starting from the middle; in lateral view, slightly curved, almost straight, gradually narrowed from base to apex; dorsal face convex, ventral face sinuous and greater width between the middle and the apex; apex digitiform, continuous, with very short spines (Fig. 21 a). Parameres broad, very short and small, shorter than the phallobase process, with two thin apical setae. Etymology. This species is named in honor of Jeane Marcelle Cavalcante do Nascimento (INPA / CBIO), a good friend and colleague in the field and laboratory, in gratitude for her help in collecting material during the fieldwork. Distribution and habitat. Southeast Brazil, currently only known from the state of Minas Gerais (Fig. 28). Specimens were collected in a stream in the cerrado (central Brazilian savanna) biome, with width = 4 m, water pH = 6.5 and water temperature = 16.6°C. Taxonomic comments. This species differs from C. jefersoni sp. n. and I. trombetensis by having the toothlike projection on the hind edge of the metatrochanter pronounced (Fig. 8), not pronounced in C. jefersoni sp. n. (Fig. 7) and I. trombetensis; by its large size (average body length: 2.06 mm) and by the shape of the male genitalia (Figs. 21–22). Claudiella jeaneae sp. n. differs from C. ingens and I. quadridentatus in the shape of the tooth-like projection of the metatrochanter (Fig. 8), more conspicuous and well-marked in C. ingens and I. quadridentatus. The new species differs from I. quadridentatus in having two thin setae on the apex of each paramere (Fig. 21), while in I. quadridentatus the parameres have only one seta. C. jeaneae sp. n. differs from C. ingens by the shape of the male genitalia in dorsal view, with lateral edges of the median lobe parallel, converging towards the apex, starting from the middle (Fig. 22), while in C. ingens the lateral edges are parallel and converge only at the apex.

Distribution and habitat. Northeast Brazil, currently only known in the state of Bahia (Fig. 28). The river is located at 470 m a.m.s.l.; width = 7 m, water temperature = 21°C, pH = 4.1 and electrical conductivity = 20 µS/cm. Taxonomic comments. This species differs from C. jefersoni sp. n. and I. trombetensis by having the toothlike projection on the hind edge of the metatrochanter pronounced (Fig. 9), not pronounced in C. jefersoni sp. n. (Fig. 7) and I. trombetensis, by its large size and by the shape of the male genitalia (Figs. 23–24). C. anamariae sp. n. differs from C. ingens and I. quadridentatus in the shape of the tooth-like projection on the metatrochanter (Fig. 9), more conspicuous and well-marked in C. ingens and I. quadridentatus. The new species differs from C. ingens by the shape of the male genitalia in dorsal view, with lateral edges of median lobe parallel, converging towards the apex, starting from the middle (Fig. 24), while in C. ingens the lateral edges are parallel converging only at the apex, and in the shape of male genitalia in lateral view, with the apex of median lobe curved downward (Fig. 23), while in C. ingens the apex is continuous. Claudiella anamariae sp. n. differs from I. quadridentatus in having two thin setae on the apex of each paramere (Fig. 23), while in I. quadridentatus the parameres have only one seta. Also, the parameres are much longer in C. anamariae sp. n. than in I. quadridentatus. The new species differs from C. jeaneae sp. n. in having the anterior edge of the labrum with a median indentation, absent in C. jeaneae sp. n.; anterior edge of the pronotum concave, sinuous in C. jeaneae sp. n.; posterior edge of prosternal process truncate, sinuous in C. jeaneae sp. n. and in the shape of the male genitalia in lateral view, with the apex of the median lobe curved downward (Fig. 23), while in C. jeaneae sp. n. the apex is continuous.

The monotypic Neotropical genus Claudiella ReichardtVanin, 1976 is currently known only from Brazil (C. ingens ReichardtVanin, 1976). We describe here three new species from Brazil, C. jefersoni sp. n., C. jeaneae sp. n. and C. anamariae sp. n., from Roraima, Minas Gerais and Bahia states, respectively, bringing to four the number of species included in Claudiella. These species can be distinguished by different characteristics observed in the legs, mouth parts, metathoracic wings and male genitalia.
