Abstract: The main goal of the FAMU experiment is the measurement of the hyperfine splitting (hfs) in the 1S state of muonic hydrogen $\Delta E_{hfs}(\mu^-p)1S$. The physical process behind this experiment is the following: $\mu p$ are formed in a mixture of hydrogen and a higher-Z gas. When absorbing a photon at resonance-energy $\Delta E_{hfs}\approx0.182$~eV, in subsequent collisions with the surrounding $H_2$ molecules, the $\mu p$ is quickly de-excited and accelerated by $\sim2/3$ of the excitation energy. The observable is the time distribution of the K-lines X-rays emitted from the $\mu Z$ formed by muon transfer $(\mu p) +Z \rightarrow (\mu Z)^*+p$, a reaction whose rate depends on the $\mu p$ kinetic energy. The maximal response, to the tuned laser wavelength, of the time distribution of X-ray from K-lines of the $(\mu Z)^*$ cascade indicate the resonance. During the preparatory phase of the FAMU experiment, several measurements have been performed both to validate the methodology and to prepare the best configuration of target and detectors for the spectroscopic measurement. Abstract: The DUNE IDR describes the proposed physics program and technical designs of the DUNE far detector modules in preparation for the full TDR to be published in 2019. It is intended as an intermediate milestone on the path to a full TDR, justifying the technical choices that flow down from the high-level physics goals through requirements at all levels of the Project. These design choices will enable the DUNE experiment to make the ground-breaking discoveries that will help to answer fundamental physics questions. Abstract: The DUNE IDR describes the proposed physics program and technical designs of the DUNE Far Detector modules in preparation for the full TDR to be published in 2019. It is intended as an intermediate milestone on the path to a full TDR, justifying the technical choices that flow down from the high-level physics goals through requirements at all levels of the Project. These design choices will enable the DUNE experiment to make the ground-breaking discoveries that will help to answer fundamental physics questions. Volume 1 contains an executive summary that describes the general aims of this document. The remainder of this first volume provides a more detailed description of the DUNE physics program that drives the choice of detector technologies. It also includes concise outlines of two overarching systems that have not yet evolved to consortium structures: computing and calibration. Volumes 2 and 3 of this IDR describe, for the single-phase and dual-phase technologies, respectively, each detector module's subsystems, the technical coordination required for its design, construction, installation, and integration, and its organizational structure., Comment: 83 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: ICARUS T600 will be operated as far detector of the Short Baseline Neutrino program at Fermilab (USA), which foresees three liquid argon time projection chambers along the Booster Neutrino Beam line to search for a LSND-like sterile neutrino signal. The detector employs 360 photomultiplier tubes, Hamamatsu model R5912-MOD, suitable for cryogenic applications. A total of 400 PMTs were procured from Hamamatsu and tested at room temperature to evaluate the performance of the devices and their compliance to detect the liquid argon scintillation light in the T600 detector. Furthermore 60 units were also characterized at cryogenic temperature, in liquid argon bath, to evaluate any parameter variation which could affect the scintillation light detection. All the tested PMTs were found to comply with the requirements of ICARUS T600 and a subset of 360 specimens was selected for the final installation in the detector.

Abstract: Tetraphenyl-butadiene (TPB) is an organic fluorescent chemical compound generally used as wavelength shifter thanks to its extremely high efficiency to convert ultra-violet photons into visible light. A common method to use TPB with detectors sensitive to visible light, such as photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), is to deposit thin layers on the device window. To obtain effective TPB layers, different procedures can be used. In this work a specific evaporation technique adopted to coat 8 in. convex windows photomultiplier tubes is presented. It consists in evaporating TPB by means of a Knudsen cell, which allows to strictly control the process, and in a rotating sample support, which guarantees the uniformity of the deposition. Simulation results and experimental tests demonstrate the effectiveness of this evaporation technique from the point of view of deposition uniformity and light conversion efficiency.

Abstract: The ICARUS T600, a liquid argon time projection chamber (LAr-TPC) detector mainly devoted to neutrino physics, underwent a major overhauling at CERN in 2016-2017, which included also a new design of the read-out electronics, in view of its operation in Fermilab on the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) beam from 2019. The new more compact electronics showed capability of handling more efficiently the signals also in the intermediate Induction 2 wire plane with a significant increase of signal to noise (S/N), allowing for charge measurement also in this view. The new front-end and the analog to digital conversion (ADC) system are presented together with the results of the tests on 50 liters liquid argon TPC performed at CERN with cosmic rays.

Abstract: ProtoDUNE-SP is the single-phase DUNE Far Detector prototype that is under construction and will be operated at the CERN Neutrino Platform (NP) starting in 2018. Abstract: Radiation hardness is an important requirement for solid state readout devices operating in high radiation environments common in particle physics experiments. The MEGII experiment, at PSI, Switzerland, investigates the forbidden decay $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$. Exploiting the most intense muon beam of the world. A significant flux of non-thermal neutrons (kinetic energy $E_k\geq 0.5 ~MeV$) is present in the experimental hall produced along the beamline and in the hall itself. We present the effects of neutron fluxes comparable to the MEGII expected doses on several Silicon PhotoMulitpliers (SiPMs). The tested models are: AdvanSiD ASD-NUV3S-P50 (used in MEGII experiment), AdvanSiD ASD-NUV3S-P40, AdvanSiD ASD-RGB3S-P40, Hamamatsu and Excelitas C30742-33-050-X. The neutron source is the thermal Sub-critical Multiplication complex (SM1) moderated with water, located at the University of Pavia (Italy). Abstract: The high precision measurement of the hyperfine splitting of the muonic-hydrogen atom ground state with pulsed and intense muon beam requires careful technological choices both in the construction of a gas target and of the detectors. In June 2014, the pressurized gas target of the FAMU experiment was exposed to the low energy pulsed muon beam at the RIKEN RAL muon facility. The objectives of the test were the characterization of the target, the hodoscope and the X-ray detectors. Abstract: The ICARUS T600 liquid argon time projection chamber (LAr-TPC) will operate at shallow depth as far detector for the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program at FNAL. A new scintillation light detection system, based on 360 Hamamatsu R5912-MOD Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs), will allow to distinguish the actual beam related events from the huge cosmic background. A fundamental parameter for the correct reconstruction of events is the linearity of the photon detection system. The main response characteristics of the adopted PMT model as a function of the incident light intensity was evaluated. A comparison of the behavior at room and at cryogenic temperature was also carried out. Results confirm the conformity of this PMT model to the requirements of the ICARUS T600 light detection system.

Abstract: Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) at cryogenic temperatures are very promising for the realization of scintillation light detectors to be adopted in particle physics experiments dedicated to neutrino and Dark Matter searches. For these reasons, we tested several devices from different manufacturers with particular emphasis to breakdown voltage, dark current and gain changes at different temperatures. The system, based on a cryo-pump with a cold head, permits to scan the temperature from 300 K down to 50 K. A second system, based on a climatic chamber, was also used. We found that all devices can be operated at cryogenic temperatures. Furthermore, the thermal component of the noise decreases at low temperature, thus allowing the use of the device at higher overvoltage.

Abstract: Tetra-PhenylButadiene (TPB) is the most common wavelength shifter used in liquefied noble gases experiments, due to its extremely high efficiency to convert VUV light in visible photons. A study of transparency, diffusion and reflection properties of TPB at its emission wavelength as a function of the thickness of the surface has been carried out for the first time. The measurement apparatus and preliminary results on scattered, backscattered and transmitted light will be presented. Data obtained can be used in Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract: Liquid argon Time Projection Chambers (LAr-TPCs) are among the most promising detectors for the study of neutrino oscillations. They are composed by a multi-wire drift chamber to collect the charge and a photodetection system to detect the scintillation light, both produced by ionizing charged particles that cross the argon volume. Scintillation light plays a fundamental role for the event reconstruction because it permits to calculate the absolute time t0 of the event and it is also used for triggering purposes. We present a comparison between the performances of large area Photo-Multiplier Tubes (PMTs) and Silicon Photo-Multiplier (SiPM) arrays deployed in a small LAr-TPC exposed to cosmic rays at CERN, both in terms of light collected and timing performances.

Abstract: A number of innovative experiments dedicated to neutrino and rare-event physics use liquefied noble-gases both as a target and as a detector. These media have the remarkable property to efficiently produce scintillation photons after the passage of ionizing particles. Scintillation light, which is used for triggering and timing purposes, is traditionally detected by large area Photo-Multiplier Tubes (PMTs) working at cryogenic temperature. Silicon Photo-Multiplier (SiPM) arrays are gradually substituting PMTs in many applications, especially where low voltages are required and magnetic field is present. One of the problems of this devices is the small active area. For this reason we built several prototype arrays made by different SiPM models with a common readout: the basic unit is a device with an active area of (1.2×1.2)cm2. A fast signal leading edge is crucial to realize devices to be used for triggering and timing. To this purpose we studied different series/parallel electrical configurations to obtain the best timing performance, by operating our custom arrays both at room and cryogenic temperatures.

Abstract: The ICARUS T600, a liquid argon time projection chamber (LAr-TPC) detector mainly devoted to neutrino physics, underwent a major overhauling at CERN in 2016-2017, which included also a new design of the read-out electronics, in view of its operation in Fermilab on the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) beam from 2019. The new more compact electronics showed capability of handling more efficiently the signals also in the intermediate Induction-2 wire plane with a significant increase of signal to noise (S/N), allowing for charge measurement also in this view. The new front-end and the analog to digital conversion (ADC) system are presented together with the results of the tests on 50 liters liquid argon TPC performed at CERN with cosmic rays.

Abstract: ICARUS T600 will be operated as far detector of the Short Baseline Neutrino program at Fermilab (U.S.A.), which foresees three liquid argon time projection chambers along the Booster Neutrino Beam line to search for a LSND-like sterile neutrino signal. The detector employs 360 photomultiplier tubes, Hamamatsu model R5912-MOD, suitable for cryogenic applications. A total of 400 PMTs were procured from Hamamatsu and tested at room temperature to evaluate the performance of the devices and their compliance to detect the liquid argon scintillation light in the T600 detector. Furthermore 60 units were also characterized at cryogenic temperature, in liquid argon bath, to evaluate any parameter variation which could affect the scintillation light detection. All the tested PMTs were found to comply with the requirements of ICARUS T600 and a subset of 360 specimens was selected for the final installation in the detector.

Abstract: In this paper, the authors present a system based on a vacuum chamber and Knudsen cells that can evaporate organic materials on convex surfaces up to 10 in. diameter, with a good uniformity, in a very short time. This system was successfully used at CERN for the deposition of tetra-phenyl butadiene wavelength shifter on the 8 in. window of 360 Hamamatsu R5912-MOD photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), before their installation inside the ICARUS T600 detector to be used for neutrino physics studies. The quantum efficiency in the vacuum ultraviolet region measured on the whole photocathode shows a good uniformity over the entire PMT active surface with an average value above 10% from 120 to 200 nm.

Abstract: Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) are semiconductor-based photodetectors with performance similar to the traditional Photomultiplier Tubes. We present a comparison between the performance at cryogenic temperatures of some models of SiPM manufactured by AdvanSiD, SensL and Hamamatsu, in terms of breakdown voltages, gain, noise and pulse shape. We used a cold head to scan temperatures from 87 K up to 300 K, focusing the measurements at the temperature of liquid argon (87 K) and liquid xenon (165 K), which are scintillating media which find use in several neutrino and Dark Matter physics experiments.

Abstract: The ICARUS T600 liquid argon time projection chamber (LAr-TPC) will operate at shallow depth as far detector for the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program at FNAL. A new scintillation light detection system, with a time resolution of the order of the nanosecond, is required to distinguish the actual beam related events from the huge cosmic background. The chosen photomultiplier tube (PMT) model is the Hamamatsu R5912-MOD. This has an 8 in. diameter window made of borosilicate glass, 10 dynodes and a bialkali photo-cathode with platinum undercoating, suitable for cryogenic applications. The main timing characteristics of this PMT model – namely the absolute transit time vs. power supply, the transit time spread for light hitting different window places and for different PMT orientations with respect to the Earth's magnetic field – have been evaluated in order to confirm the suitability of this PMT model to the requirements of the SBN program.

Abstract: Tetraphenyl-butadiene (TPB) is an organic fluorescent chemical compound generally used as wavelength shifter thanks to its extremely high efficiency to convert ultra-violet photons into visible light. A common method to use TPB with detectors sensitive to visible light, such as photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), is to deposit thin layers on the device window. To obtain effective TPB layers, different procedures can be used. In this work a specific evaporation technique adopted to coat 8 in convex windows photomultiplier tubes is presented. It consists in evaporating TPB by means of a Knudsen cell, which allows to strictly control the process, and in a rotating sample support, which guarantees the uniformity of the deposition. Simulation results and experimental tests demonstrate the effectiveness of this evaporation technique from the point of view of deposition uniformity and light conversion efficiency.

Abstract: Scintillating crystals coupled to SiPM array readout have been proposed to realize compact X-rays detectors for the FAMU experiment, which aims to accurately measure the hyperfine splitting of the ground state of the muonic hydrogen atom. A measurement of the transfer rate of muons from hydrogen to heavier gases is necessary for this purpose. Since 2014, in a series of test runs, a pressurized gas-target was exposed to the pulsed low-energy muon beam at the RIKEN RAL muon facility (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, U.K.). The main goal of these tests was the characterization of both the background induced by the pulsed beam and the X-ray detectors. Preliminary results are shown on the use of new Pr:LuAG and Ce:GAGG crystals, developed for PET scanners and of more conventional LaBr[Formula presented]:Ce crystals, with a SiPM array readout. Energy spectra of the X-rays produced after the de-excitation of muonic atoms formed from the interaction of the beam muons with the gas target in the FAMU apparatus are shown, demonstrating the suitability of these detectors for muonic X-rays spectroscopy.

Abstract: The FAMU experiment aims to accurately measure the hyperfine splitting of the ground state of the muonic hydrogen atom. A measurement of the transfer rate of muons from hydrogen to heavier gases is necessary for this purpose. The main goal of the test was the characterization of both the noise induced by the pulsed beam and the X-ray detectors. The apparatus, to some extent rudimental, has served admirably to this task. Technical results have been published that prove the validity of the choices made and pave the way for the next steps. This paper presents the results of physical relevance of measurements of the muon transfer rate to carbon dioxide, oxygen, and argon from non-thermalized excited µp atoms. The analysis methodology and the approach to the systematics errors are useful for the subsequent study of the transfer rate as function of the kinetic energy of the µp currently under way.

Abstract: Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr-TPC) technique has been established as one of the most promising for the next generation of experiments dedicated to neutrino and rare-event physics. LAr-TPCs have the fundamental feature to be able to both collect the charge and the scintillation light produced after the passage of a ionizing particle inside the Argon volume. Scintillation light is traditionally detected by large surface Photo-Multiplier Tubes (PMTs) working at cryogenic temperature. Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) are semiconductor-based devices with performances comparable to the PMT ones, but with very small active areas. For this reason we built a prototype array composed by SiPMs connected in different electrical configurations. We present results on preliminary tests made with four SiPMs, connected both in parallel and in series configurations, deployed into a 50 liters LAr-TPC exposed to cosmic rays at CERN.

Abstract: ICARUS T600 will become the far detector of the Short Baseline Neutrino program at FNAL (USA), which foresees three liquid argon time projection chambers along the Booster Neutrino Beam line. The apparatus is now under refurbishing at CERN. A new light detection system is foreseen, using four planes of photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs) with 90 units each. A first pre-series of 20 PMTs Hamamatsu R5912-MOD, 8 in. diameter suitable for cryogenic applications, was fully tested, both at room and at liquid argon temperature, to ensure good performance of the detector.

Abstract: Silicon Photomultipliers are semiconductor-based photodetectors with performances similar to the traditional photomultiplier tubes, frequently used in many fields. In this article we report results obtained testing some devices at cryogenic temperatures in view of an application for scintillation light detection in detectors that use liquid argon as active medium. This campaign of measurements is the first step to find the most suitable model for this application.

Abstract: The development of detectors based on liquefied noble gas (LAr, LXe) is mandatory for experiments dedicated to study physics beyond the Standard Model. For this purpose, it is fundamental to detect the Vacuum Ultra Violet (VUV) scintillation light, produced after the passage of ionizing particles inside the detector sensitive volume, to be used for trigger, timing and calorimetric purposes. Besides the traditional cryogenic Photo-Multiplier Tubes (PMTs), one possibility is to adopt Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs). We present a comparison of the performance of a SiPM (mod. ASD-NUV3S-P Low Afterpulse) at various cryogenic temperatures, from 60 K up to room temperature, with particular emphasis on the LAr and LXe temperatures. SiPM were characterized in terms of breakdown voltage, gain, pulse shape response, dark count rate and correlated noise.

Abstract: The main goal of the FAMU experiment is the measurement of the hyperfine splitting (hfs) in the 1S state of muonic hydrogen $��E_{hfs}(��^-p)1S$. The physical process behind this experiment is the following: $��p$ are formed in a mixture of hydrogen and a higher-Z gas. When absorbing a photon at resonance-energy $��E_{hfs}\approx0.182$~eV, in subsequent collisions with the surrounding $H_2$ molecules, the $��p$ is quickly de-excited and accelerated by $\sim2/3$ of the excitation energy. The observable is the time distribution of the K-lines X-rays emitted from the $��Z$ formed by muon transfer $(��p) +Z \rightarrow (��Z)^*+p$, a reaction whose rate depends on the $��p$ kinetic energy. The maximal response, to the tuned laser wavelength, of the time distribution of X-ray from K-lines of the $(��Z)^*$ cascade indicate the resonance. During the preparatory phase of the FAMU experiment, several measurements have been performed both to validate the methodology and to prepare the best configuration of target and detectors for the spectroscopic measurement. Abstract: The DUNE IDR describes the proposed physics program and technical designs of the DUNE Far Detector modules in preparation for the full TDR to be published in 2019. It is intended as an intermediate milestone on the path to a full TDR, justifying the technical choices that flow down from the high-level physics goals through requirements at all levels of the Project. These design choices will enable the DUNE experiment to make the ground-breaking discoveries that will help to answer fundamental physics questions. Volume 1 contains an executive summary that describes the general aims of this document. The remainder of this first volume provides a more detailed description of the DUNE physics program that drives the choice of detector technologies. It also includes concise outlines of two overarching systems that have not yet evolved to consortium structures: computing and calibration. Volumes 2 and 3 of this IDR describe, for the single-phase and dual-phase technologies, respectively, each detector module's subsystems, the technical coordination required for its design, construction, installation, and integration, and its organizational structure.

Abstract: An evaluation of the behavior of three large cathode area photo-multiplier tubes, Hamamatsu R5912 Mod and R5912-02 Mod, and ETL 9357 KFLB, was carried out both at room and cryogenic temperature, using a 405 nm light source. The main electrical and optical features of the devices were studied; the obtained results were compared with the characteristics of the ETL 9357 FLA tubes, used in the ICARUS experiment. Tubes were also studied as a function of the Earth?s magnetic field and an evaluation of the quantum efficiency was made in the vacuum ultraviolet light region.

Abstract: We tested the performance of two types of silicon photomultipliers, AdvanSiD ASD-NUV-SiPM3S-P and Hamamatsu 3×3 MM-50 UM VUV2, both at room (300 K) and at liquid nitrogen (77 K) temperature: breakdown voltage, quenching resistance, signal shape, gain and dark counts rate have been studied as function of temperature. The response of the devices to ultra-violet light is also studied.

Abstract: The use of new PrLuAg and Ce:CAAG crystals, developed for PET scanners. and of more conventional LaBr3 crystals, with a SiPM array readout has been proposed, searching for compact X-rays detectors. The first two crystals are nothygroscopic and have high photon yields, good energy resolution and fast decay time. Preliminary laboratory results are reported.
