Abstract

We explain the large variety of star formation laws in terms of one single, simple law that can be inferred from the definition of the star formation rate and basic algebra. The resulting equation, $\SFR = \eff\ \Mcollapsing/\tauff$, although it has been presented elsewhere, is interpreted in terms of clouds undergoing collapse { rather than being turbulence-supported, an idea that different groups have pursued this century}. Under such assumption, one can explain the constancy of $\eff$, the different intra-cloud correlations observed in Milky Way's molecular clouds, as well as the resolved and unresolved extragalactic relationships between SFR and a measurement of the mass in CO, HCN, and CO+HI. We also explain why the slope of the correlation changes when the orbital time $\tauorb$ is considered instead of the free-fall time, and why estimations of the free-fall time from extragalactic observations skew the correlation, providing a false sublinear correlation. We furthermore show that the apparent nearly linear correlation between the star formation rate and the dynamical equilibrium pressure in the midplane of the galaxies, $\PDE$, is just a consequence of $\PDE$ values being dominated by the variation of the column density of molecular gas. All in all, we argue that the star formation law is driven by the collapse of cold, dense gas, which happens to be primarily molecular in the present Universe, and that the role of stellar feedback is just to shut down the star formation process, not to shape the star formation law., Comment: 17 pages, one figure. 3. Environmental effects on low surface brightness galaxies in the IllustrisTNG simulation.

Abstract

Employing the TNG100 run of the IllustrisTNG project, we characterize the environment of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) across varying scales, from their associated dark matter haloes to their distribution within the broader cosmic structure. We find no significant differences in the halo concentration index |$c_{200}$| between LSBGs and their high surface brightness galaxy (HSBG) counterparts, with LSBGs residing in haloes with higher spin parameter |$\lambda$| and slightly more spherical shapes than HSBGs. LSBGs show a stronger alignment between the dark and stellar angular momentum vectors than their high surface brightness counterparts. The relative abundance of LSBGs within groups and clusters displays a central deficit, hinting at potential destruction upon reaching these core regions. Studying the density field, we find a preference for rotation-dominated LSBGs to reside in low-density environments, while dispersion-dominated LSBGs thrive in high-density regions where galaxy interactions govern their evolution, an observation corroborated by our analysis of the two-point correlation function |$\xi (r)$|⁠. Our examination of the cosmic web reveals no significant differences in the distance to the closest large-scale structure, barring a few exceptions. This suggests a limited impact of large-scale spatial distribution on mechanisms driving LSBG evolution. All together, we conclude that the halo vicinity and local environment at the scale of galaxy clusters, where mechanisms such as galaxy mergers and tidal stripping, as well as stellar and gas accretion take place, is the most likely environment that favour the emergence of LSBGs with different morphologies, mostly driven by the presence or absence of important local interaction phenomena. 4. On the galactic spin of barred disk galaxies

Abstract

We present a study of the connection between the galactic spin parameter $\lambda_{d}$ and the bar fraction in a volume-limited sample of 10,674 disk galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. The galaxies in our sample are visually classified into galaxies hosting long or short bars, and non-barred galaxies. We find that the spin distributions of these three classes are statistically different, with galaxies hosting long bars with the lowest $\lambda_{d}$ values, followed by non-barred galaxies, while galaxies with short bars present typically high spin parameters. The bar fraction presents its maximum at low to intermediate $\lambda_{d}$ values for the case of long bars, while the maximum for short bars is at high $\lambda_{d}$. This bi-modality is in good agreement with previous studies finding longer bars hosted by luminous, massive, red galaxies with low content of cold gas, while short bars are found in low luminosity, low mass, blue galaxies, usually gas rich. In addition, the rise and fall of the bar fraction as a function of $\lambda_{d}$, within the long-bar sample, shown in our results, can be explained as a result of two competing factors: the self-gravity of the disk that enhances bar instabilities, and the support by random motions instead of ordered rotational motion, that prevents the formation/growth of bars., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures,1 table. Abstract

We study the evolution of the galactic spin using data of high redshift galaxies in the fields of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS). Through simple dynamical considerations we estimate the spin for the disc galaxies in our sample and find that its distribution is consistent with that found for nearby galaxies. Defining a dimensionless angular momentum parameter for the disc component of the galaxies ($\lambda_{d}$), we do not find signs of evolution in the redshift range $0.4 \leq z \leq 1.2$. We find that the mass and environmental dependence of the spin of our high redshift galaxies are similar to that of low-$z$ galaxies; showing a strong dependence on mass, in the sense that low-mass systems present higher $\lambda_{d}$ values than high-mass galaxies, with no significant dependence on the environmental density. These results lead us to conclude that, although individual disc galaxies might occasionally suffer from strong evolution, they evolve in such a way that the overall spin distribution of the galactic population remains constant from $z\sim1$ to the present epoch., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 Table. Abstract

Using an extensive sample of galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5, we compare the angular momentum distribution of active galactic nucleus (AGN) with non-AGN hosting late-type galaxies. To this end we characterize galactic spin through the dimensionless angular momentum parameter $\lambda$, which we estimate approximately through simple dynamical considerations. Using a volume limited sample, we find a considerable difference when comparing the empirical distributions of $\lambda$ for AGNs and non-AGN galaxies, the AGNs showing typically low $\lambda$ values and associated dispersions, while non-AGNs present higher $\lambda$ values and a broader distribution. A more striking difference is found when looking at $\lambda$ distributions in thin $M_{r}$ cuts, while the spin of non-AGN galaxies presents an anti-correlation with $M_{r}$, with bright (massive) galaxies having low spins, AGN host galaxies present uniform values of $\lambda$ at all magnitudes, a behavior probably imposed by the fact that most late-type AGN galaxies present a narrow range in color, with a typical constant $\lambda$ value. We also find that the fraction of AGN hosting galaxies in our sample strongly depends on galactic spin, increasing dramatically for decreasing $\lambda$. Abstract

To study if the angular momentum gain for each member of a galaxy pair was the result of tidal torques imprinted by the same tidal field, we search for correlations between the spin in pairs of spiral galaxies identified using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find a weak, but statistically significant correlation between the spin magnitude of neighbouring galaxies. We show that events such as close interactions with neighbours play an important role in the value of the spin for the final configuration, as we find these interactions tend to reduce the value of the $\lambda$ spin parameter of late-type galaxies considerably. Abstract

Giant low surface brightness (GLSB) galaxies, such as Malin 1 and UGC 1382, contain the largest stellar discs known. GLSB galaxies also often contain large masses of neutral hydrogen (H  i). However, these extreme galaxies' origin and properties remain poorly understood. Using the cosmological simulation IllustrisTNG 100, we identify and select a sample of ∼200 galaxies with extended (⁠|$R_{\rm {\rm H\,{\small I}}}\,\gt\, 50$| kpc) and well-defined H  i discs, ∼6 per cent of the total galaxies in the same stellar mass range (10.2 < log (M */M⊙) < 11.6). This GLSB sample is heterogeneous, with mixed galaxy morphologies ranging from the most disc-dominated systems to massive ellipticals. These simulated GLSB galaxies are located in massive haloes (⁠|$V_{\max }\, \gt \, 150\ \rm {km\ s^{-1}}$|⁠) and their properties, such as total H  i content, stellar disc parameters, star formation rate, and rotation curves, agree with observed GLSB galaxies. We construct a paired control sample to contrast with the GLSB galaxies. The GLSB galaxies tend to have large galaxy spin parameters (⁠|$40{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| larger) and larger ex situ stellar mass fractions than the paired control. Abstract

We explore the nature of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) in the hydrodynamic cosmological simulation TNG100 of the IllustrisTNG project, selecting a sample of LSBGs (r band effective surface brightness μr > 22.0 mag arcsec−2) at z  = 0 over a wide range of stellar masses (M * = 109–1012 M⊙). We find LSBGs of all stellar masses, although they are particularly prevalent at M * < 1010 M⊙. We show that the specific star formation rates of LSBGs are not significantly different from those of high surface brightness galaxies (HSBGs) but that, as a population, LSBGs are systematically less massive and more extended than HSBGs, and tend to display late-type morphologies according to a kinematic criterion. At fixed stellar mass, we find that haloes hosting LSBGs are systematically more massive and have a higher baryonic fraction than those hosting HSBGs. We find that LSBGs have higher stellar specific angular momentum and halo spin parameter values compared to HSBGs, as suggested by previous works. We track the evolution of these quantities back in time, finding that the spin parameters of the haloes hosting LSBGs and HSBGs exhibit a clear bifurcation at z ∼ 2, which causes a similar separation in the evolutionary tracks of other properties such as galactic angular momentum and effective radius, ultimately resulting in the values observed at z  = 0. The higher values of specific stellar angular momentum and halo spin in LSBGs seem to be responsible for their extended nature, preventing material from collapsing into the central regions of the galaxies, and also causing LSBGs to host less massive black holes at their centres. Abstract

The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since 2014 July. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the 14th from SDSS overall (making this Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes the data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (2014-2016 July) public. Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey; the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data-driven machine-learning algorithm known as ¿The Cannon¿ and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from the SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS web site (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. Abstract

ABSTRACT We study the evolution of the galactic spin using data of high-redshift galaxies in the fields of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey. Through simple dynamical considerations we estimate the spin for the disc galaxies in our sample and find that its distribution is consistent with that found for nearby galaxies. Defining a dimensionless angular momentum parameter for the disc component of the galaxies (λd), we do not find signs of evolution in the redshift range 0.4 ≤ z ≤ 1.2. We find that the mass and environmental dependences of the spin of our high-redshift galaxies are similar to those of low- z galaxies, showing a strong dependence on mass, in the sense that low-mass systems present higher λd values than high-mass galaxies, with no significant dependence on the environmental density. These results lead us to conclude that although individual disc galaxies might occasionally suffer strong evolution, they evolve in such a way that the overall spin distribution of the galactic population remains constant from z ∼ 1 to the present epoch. Abstract

Twenty years have passed since first light for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Here, we release data taken by the fourth phase of SDSS (SDSS-IV) across its first three years of operation (2014 July–2017 July). This is the third data release for SDSS-IV, and the 15th from SDSS (Data Release Fifteen; DR15). New data come from MaNGA—we release 4824 data cubes, as well as the first stellar spectra in the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar), the first set of survey-supported analysis products (e.g., stellar and gas kinematics, emission-line and other maps) from the MaNGA Data Analysis Pipeline, and a new data visualization and access tool we call "Marvin." The next data release, DR16, will include new data from both APOGEE-2 and eBOSS; those surveys release no new data here, but we document updates and corrections to their data processing pipelines. The release is cumulative; it also includes the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since first light. In this paper, we describe the location and format of the data and tools and cite technical references describing how it was obtained and processed. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has also been updated, providing links to data downloads, tutorials, and examples of data use. Although SDSS-IV will continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be followed by SDSS-V (2020–2025), we end this paper by describing plans to ensure the sustainability of the SDSS data archive for many years beyond the collection of data.

Although SDSS-IV will continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be followed by SDSS-V (2020–2025), we end this paper by describing plans to ensure the sustainability of the SDSS data archive for many years beyond the collection of data.
