Beef burgers are meat preparations with easy perishability. To ensure a longer shelf-life, the Regulation EU 1129/11 allows the use of some additives. However, health-conscious consumers prefer products which do not contain synthetic substances. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of Red Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) integration on Black Angus made burgers shelf life. Red beet was prepared as powder and added to meat mixture as the same or in water solution. The study was split into 2 trials to assess the extract activity also in burgers vacuum-packaged stored. Burgers were analysed (up to 9 days at 4°C) in terms of sensory properties, microbiological profile, pH, aw and lipid oxidation (TBARS). At the end of storage, treated samples showed the highest values of redness and the lowest content of malondialdehyde, probably due to antioxidant properties of red beet towards myoglobin and lipid oxidation processes. Moreover, results highlighted that Red Beetroot activities were dose-dependent and intensified if dissolved in water. The aw values did not appear to be conditioned by extract integrations, unlike the pH that was lower in treated samples than control ones. Microbiological analyses identified beet-root as a potential antimicrobial substance, especially in high concentration. In conclusion, Beta vulgaris extract could be pro-posed as natural compound exploitable in beef burgers to preserve qualities and extend their shelf-life.

Hyaloglide® is a hyaluronan-based gel based on a novel auto-crosslinked technology designed to reduce postsurgical adhesions. Its efficacy was assessed in a multicentred randomized controlled trial comparing the results of flexor tenolysis in zone 2 following failed flexor tendon repairs. In the control group a standard release was performed. In the treated group, Hyaloglide® was applied into the flexor sheath and around the site of tenolysis. Forty-five patients, 19 controls and 26 treated with Hyaloglide®, were enrolled in 13 centres. All the patients were evaluated at 30, 60, 90 and 180 days after surgery by testing Total Active Motion, Quick-DASH questionnaire and number of working days lost after surgery. Patients in the Hyaloglide® group had a statistically better recovery of finger motion at all time intervals and returned earlier to work and daily activities. The use of Hyaloglide® did not appear to increase the complication rate.

Aim: This study aims to evaluate the mechanisms of liver toxicity in the specific group of mCRC patients treated with FOLFIRI-based regimens, calculating the R ratio and the AST/ALT ratio and retrospectively comparing patients treated with SAMe supplementation with patients who did not receive the supplementation. Methods: 156 mCRC patients receiving a FOLFIRI backbone-based regimen were included in this analysis. Liver enzymes levels (AST, ALT, total bilirubin, gamma-glutamyltransferase, alkaline phosphatise) were assessed before starting the treatment (basal value) and then before every therapy course. R ratio and the AST/ALT ratio was calculated in patients developing liver toxicity. 46 out of 156 patients received an oral supplementation of SAMe (400 mg twice a day). Results: AST, ALT and alkaline phosphatase (AP) has shown a significant modification after the beginning of first line treatment. Specifically, both AST level (123.87 vs 41.05U/l; P Conclusions: For the first time in literature, pattern of chemotherapy-induced liver injury has been indirectly defined upon the evaluation of R-Ratio, revealing the mixed pattern of liver damage. SAMe supplementation prevent hepatotoxicity in a specific group of mCRC patients treated with FOLFIRI-containing regimens reducing Grade 3-4 hypertransaminase (2.17% vs 16.37%; P=0.029) and treatment delays (4.35% vs 20.90%, P=0.020). 10515 Background: Data from metastatic GIST patients harbouring exon 11 mutation who received a second line treatment with sunitinib or imatinib dose escalation were retrospectively analysed to compare survival. Methods: 123 exon 11 mutated advanced GIST patients were included. All patients progressed on imatinib 400 mg/die and received, on discretion of physician, a second line treatment with either imatinib (800 mg/die) or sunitinib (50 mg/die 4 weeks on/2 weeks of or 37.5 mg/day continuous daily dose). The type of exon 11 mutation was recorded (deletion versus others) and correlated with survival and response according to RECIST or CHOI criteria Results: 79 patients (64%) received a second line treatment with imatinib, 44 (36%) sunitinib. Over the last twenty years, progress in diagnosis and in adjuvant therapy in the field of malignant bone tumor treatment has allowed for development of limb-saving surgical techniques after oncological excision. In this context, the use of vascularized fibula for transplantation represents an important instrument in the reconstruction of bone, either with or without allografts.Moreover, in pediatric cases, the vascularized transplant of the proximal fibula with its open physis allows for an adequate reconstruction of the bone loss and the possibility of conserving the growth potential of the segment. The purpose of this article is to illustrate the various reconstructive possibilities that the use of the combined graft technique (VFT plus allograft) offers in the treatment of large-scale bone loss. In our department from 1988 to 2000, 142 vascularized fibula transplants were performed in oncological cases. Surgical reconstruction was carried out on the tibia in 70 cases, on the femur in 40, on the humerus in 26 and on the radius in 6. Combined graft intercalary reconstructions were 92. In 22 pediatric cases the fibula was transplanted, including the proximal growing epiphysis in the graft; in two of these cases massive allograft was associated to the VFG. Because of its biological properties, the grafted vascularized fibula allowed for fast bone fusion at the level of the osteotomy. It has also demonstrated a tendency of progressive hypertrophy and osteointegration with the allograft, when used. In 22 pediatric cases, the fibula graft with the proximal epiphysis maintained its ability to grow. Unsuccessful outcomes caused by vascular, mechanical, or septic failure were equal to 8.2 %. The fibula graft in the reconstruction of bone loss secondary to oncological excision is a trustworthy and versatile technique.
