Abstract: Trees structure the Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystem, tropical forests. The vast number of tree species presents a formidable challenge to understanding these forests, including their response to environmental change, as very little is known about most tropical tree species. A focus on the common species may circumvent this challenge. Here we investigate abundance patterns of common tree species using inventory data on 1,003,805 trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm across 1,568 locations 1–6 in closed-canopy, structurally intact old-growth tropical forests in Africa, Amazonia and Southeast Asia. We estimate that 2.2%, 2.2% and 2.3% of species comprise 50% of the tropical trees in these regions, respectively. Extrapolating across all closed-canopy tropical forests, we estimate that just 1,053 species comprise half of Earth’s 800 billion tropical trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm. Despite differing biogeographic, climatic and anthropogenic histories 7, we find notably consistent patterns of common species and species abundance distributions across the continents. This suggests that fundamental mechanisms of tree community assembly may apply to all tropical forests. Resampling analyses show that the most common species are likely to belong to a manageable list of known species, enabling targeted efforts to understand their ecology. Although they do not detract from the importance of rare species, our results open new opportunities to understand the world’s most diverse forests, including modelling their response to environmental change, by focusing on the common species that constitute the majority of their trees.

Abstract: VAMOS was a prototype detector built in 2011 at an altitude of 4100m a.s.l. in the state of Puebla, Mexico. The aim of VAMOS was to finalize the design, construction techniques and data acquisition system of the HAWC observatory. HAWC is an air-shower array currently under construction at the same site of VAMOS with the purpose to study the TeV sky. The VAMOS setup included six water Cherenkov detectors and two different data acquisition systems. It was in operation between October 2011 and May 2012 with an average live time of 30%. Besides the scientific verification purposes, the eight months of data were used to obtain the results presented in this paper: the detector response to the Forbush decrease of March 2012, and the analysis of possible emission, at energies above 30 GeV, for long gamma-ray bursts GRB111016B and GRB120328B., Comment: Accepted for pubblication in Astroparticle Physics Journal (20 pages, 10 figures). Abstract: We present the sensitivity of HAWC to Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). HAWC is a very high-energy gamma-ray observatory currently under construction in Mexico at an altitude of 4100 m. It will observe atmospheric air showers via the water Cherenkov method. HAWC will consist of 300 large water tanks instrumented with 4 photomultipliers each. HAWC has two data acquisition (DAQ) systems. The main DAQ system reads out coincident signals in the tanks and reconstructs the direction and energy of individual atmospheric showers. The scaler DAQ counts the hits in each photomultiplier tube (PMT) in the detector and searches for a statistical excess over the noise of all PMTs. We show that HAWC has a realistic opportunity to observe the high-energy power law components of GRBs that extend at least up to 30 GeV, as it has been observed by Fermi LAT. The two DAQ systems have an energy threshold that is low enough to observe events similar to GRB 090510 and GRB 090902b with the characteristics observed by Fermi LAT. HAWC will provide information about the high-energy spectra of GRBs which in turn could help to understanding about e-pair attenuation in GRB jets, extragalactic background light absorption, as well as establishing the highest energy to which GRBs accelerate particles.

Abstract: Tree diversity and composition in Amazonia are known to be strongly determined by the water supplied by precipitation. Nevertheless, within the same climatic regime, water availability is modulated by local topography and soil characteristics (hereafter referred to as local hydrological conditions), varying from saturated and poorly drained to well-drained and potentially dry areas. While these conditions may be expected to influence species distribution, the impacts of local hydrological conditions on tree diversity and composition remain poorly understood at the whole Amazon basin scale. Using a dataset of 443 1-ha non-flooded forest plots distributed across the basin, we investigate how local hydrological conditions influence 1) tree alpha diversity, 2) the community-weighted wood density mean (CWM-wd) – a proxy for hydraulic resistance and 3) tree species composition. We find that the effect of local hydrological conditions on tree diversity depends on climate, being more evident in wetter forests, where diversity increases towards locations with well-drained soils. CWM-wd increased towards better drained soils in Southern and Western Amazonia. Tree species composition changed along local soil hydrological gradients in Central-Eastern, Western and Southern Amazonia, and those changes were correlated with changes in the mean wood density of plots. Our results suggest that local hydrological gradients filter species, influencing the diversity and composition of Amazonian forests. Overall, this study shows that the effect of local hydrological conditions is pervasive, extending over wide Amazonian regions, and reinforces the importance of accounting for local topography and hydrology to better understand the likely response and resilience of forests to increased frequency of extreme climate events and rising temperatures.

Abstract: Amazonian forests are extraordinarily diverse, but the estimated species richness is very much debated. Here, we apply an ensemble of parametric estimators and a novel technique that includes conspecific spatial aggregation to an extended database of forest plots with up-to-date taxonomy. We show that the species abundance distribution of Amazonia is best approximated by a logseries with aggregated individuals, where aggregation increases with rarity. By averaging several methods to estimate total richness, we confirm that over 15,000 tree species are expected to occur in Amazonia. We also show that using ten times the number of plots would result in an increase to just ~50% of those 15,000 estimated species. To get a more complete sample of all tree species, rigorous field campaigns may be needed but the number of trees in Amazonia will remain an estimate for years to come. © 2020, The Author(s).

Abstract: Tropical forests are known for their high diversity. Yet, forest patches do occur in the tropics where a single tree species is dominant. Such “monodominant” forests are known from all of the main tropical regions. For Amazonia, we sampled the occurrence of monodominance in a massive, basin-wide database of forest-inventory plots from the Amazon Tree Diversity Network (ATDN). Utilizing a simple defining metric of at least half of the trees ≥ 10 cm diameter belonging to one species, we found only a few occurrences of monodominance in Amazonia, and the phenomenon was not significantly linked to previously hypothesized life history traits such wood density, seed mass, ectomycorrhizal associations, or Rhizobium nodulation. In our analysis, coppicing (the formation of sprouts at the base of the tree or on roots) was the only trait significantly linked to monodominance. While at specific locales coppicing or ectomycorrhizal associations may confer a considerable advantage to a tree species and lead to its monodominance, very few species have these traits. Mining of the ATDN dataset suggests that monodominance is quite rare in Amazonia, and may be linked primarily to edaphic factors.

Abstract: © The Author(s) 2017. Tropical forests are global centres of biodiversity and carbon storage. Many tropical countries aspire to protect forest to fulfil biodiversity and climate mitigation policy targets, but the conservation strategies needed to achieve these two functions depend critically on the tropical forest tree diversity-carbon storage relationship. Assessing this relationship is challenging due to the scarcity of inventories where carbon stocks in aboveground biomass and species identifications have been simultaneously and robustly quantified. Here, we compile a unique pan-Tropical dataset of 360 plots located in structurally intact old-growth closed-canopy forest, surveyed using standardised methods, allowing a multi-scale evaluation of diversity-carbon relationships in tropical forests. Diversity-carbon relationships among all plots at 1 ha scale across the tropics are absent, and within continents are either weak (Asia) or absent (Amazonia, Africa). A weak positive relationship is detectable within 1 ha plots, indicating that diversity effects in tropical forests may be scale dependent. The absence of clear diversity-carbon relationships at scales relevant to conservation planning means that carbon-centred conservation strategies will inevitably miss many high diversity ecosystems. As tropical forests can have any combination of tree diversity and carbon stocks both require explicit consideration when optimising policies to manage tropical carbon and biodiversity.

Abstract: Estimates of extinction risk for Amazonian plant and animal species are rare, and not often incorporated into land-use policy and conservation planning. Here we overlay spatial distribution models with historical and projected deforestation to show that at least 40% and up to 64% of all Amazonian tree species are likely to qualify as globally threatened under IUCN Red List criteria. If confirmed, these results would increase the number of threatened plant species on Earth by 22%. We further show that the trends observed in Amazonia apply to trees throughout the tropics, and predict that most of the world's >40,000 tropical tree species currently qualify as globally threatened. A gap analysis suggests that existing Amazonian protected areas and indigenous territories will protect viable populations of most threatened species if those areas suffer no further degradation, highlighting the key roles that protected areas, indigenous peoples, and improved governance can play in preventing large-scale extinctions in the tropics in this century.

Abstract: Aims: To determine the association between the sleep duration and the risk of all-cause mortality in adults. Methods: A search strategy was conducted in the MEDLINE, CENTRAL, EMBASE and LILACS databases. Searches were also conducted in other databases and unpublished literature. Cohort studies were included without language, time or setting restrictions. The risk of bias was evaluated with a modified Cochrane Collaboration's tool. An analysis of random effects was conducted. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality. The measure of the effect was the risk difference (RD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). The planned comparisons were 7–9 h of sleep v. <7 h and the same reference v. >9 h. Results: Thirty-nine studies were included in our qualitative analysis, regarding the quantitative analysis, 19 studies were included in <7 v. 7–9 h analysis, and 18 studies in the >9 v. 7–9 h. A low risk of bias was shown for most of the study items. The overall RD for all-cause mortality was 0.09 (95% CI 0.07–0.11) favouring the >9 h group compared with our reference. In contrast, no differences were found between the <7 h and the reference sleep duration groups (RD 0.00, 95% CI 0.00–0.01). Conclusion: We found a probable association of long sleep duration and higher mortality; however, it could reflect an underlying systemic or neurological disease that cause sleep fragmentation, deterioration in quality and micro-awakenings. Abstract: El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo detectar la presencia de anticuerpos contra Lawsonia intracellularis en cerdos de granjas tecnificadas de los valles de Lima y Huaral. Los anticuerpos fueron detectados mediante la prueba de inmunofluorescencia indirecta en muestras de suero de 197 cerdos de tres edades diferentes. La presencia de anticuerpos evidencia la exposición de los cerdos a la bacteria, por lo que se debe reconocer a la Lawsonia intracellularis como un nuevo agente etiológico de diarreas que afecta la industria porcina en el Perú., The aim of the present study was to detect antibodies against Lawsonia intracellularis in pigs from well-managed farms in Lima and Huaral valleys. Antibodies were detected using the indirect immunofluorescence test in 197 serum samples from pigs of three different ages. 38.7% of the samples were positive, corresponding 18.9, 44.3 and 45.5% to farms located in the areas of Huaraz, Cieneguilla and Lurín, respectively. The prevalence recorded in weaned and fattened pigs, and gilts were 24.6, 47.6 y 44.7%, respectively. The presence of antibodies indicates that these pigs have been exposed to the bacteria, so Lawsonia intracellularis should be considered as a new microorganism causing diarrhea and therefore, affecting the pig industry in the country

Abstract: The vast extent of the Amazon Basin has historically restricted the study of its tree communities to the local and regional scales. Here, we provide empirical data on the commonness, rarity, and richness of lowland tree species across the entire Amazon Basin and Guiana Shield (Amazonia), collected in 1170 tree plots in all major forest types. Extrapolations suggest that Amazonia harbors roughly 16,000 tree species, of which just 227 (1.4%) account for half of all trees. Most of these are habitat specialists and only dominant in one or two regions of the basin. We discuss some implications of the finding that a small group of species—less diverse than the North American tree flora—accounts for half of the world’s most diverse tree community.

44. Influencia del polvo de vidrio en el comportamiento ambiental, térmico y mecánico del hormigón que contiene ceniza de cascarilla de arroz

Abstract: Cada año se produce una gran cantidad de residuos de vidrio (RV) y cenizas de cascarilla de arroz (CCA), que se convierte en un volumen inmanejable de desechos sin una adecuada disposición. En este trabajo se evaluó el efecto de la incorporación de polvo de vidrio molido en el hormigón preparado con ceniza de cascarilla de arroz como sustituto del cemento, considerando las diferencias de comportamiento del hormigón con incorporación individual de ceniza y en función del porcentaje de incorporación de residuos de vidrio. Se empleó un reemplazo de 5% del cemento por polvo de vidrio y cenizas preparadas de cascarilla de arroz. Se prepararon hormigones con proporciones de ceniza de cascarilla de arroz y residuos de vidrio CCA:RV 1:0, 1:1, 1:2 y 1:3 (CCA + RV = 5%). Para estos especímenes, se evaluó el comportamiento mecánico, térmico y ambiental; este último medido en el número de emisiones de CO2. Los resultados mostraron que el asentamiento y la densidad de las mezclas de hormigón preparadas aumentaron proporcionalmente con la proporción de vidrio triturado. En términos de la resistencia a compresión simple, la mezcla 1:3 (de mayor contenido de vidrio) fue superior en un 14% a la mezcla de hormigón 1:0. En el comportamiento térmico, los resultados revelaron que, en contraste con la mezcla de hormigón 1:0, la conductividad térmica de la mezcla 1:3 aumentó en un 380% y el CO2emitido se redujo en un 5.5 %. Finalmente, la incorporación de vidrio mejora el comportamiento mecánico y térmico, además de reducir el impacto ambiental del hormigón preparado con incorporación individual de cenizas.

Abstract: This study evaluated the effect of different pasteurization treatments on sensory characteristics and content of vitamin C of four fruit juices: Blackberry cv. Castilla (MC), Mango cv. Costeño (MAC), Orange cv. Valencia (NV) and Tree tomato cv. Tamarillo (TA). The results showed that the suitable pasteurization process, defined as that who showed lack of peroxidase (POD) activity, measured qualitatively for each juice, was 80°C for 120 seconds (MC), 80°C for 90 seconds (MAC), 75°C for 90 seconds (NV), and 80°C for 90 seconds (TA); the effect of processing on the color, smell and taste of juices was assessed using sensory analysis by a trained panel and revealed that there were no significant differences (p<0,05) among characteristics evaluated before and after heat treatment. The pasteurization treatment-induced losses of vitamin C, were quantified using Mohr method, exhibited values of 84,67% (MC), 89,82% (MAC), 99,43% (NV) and 87,72% (TA). The treatment applied, prolonged the shelf life of the juice from 10 to 12 days at refrigeration temperature, without appreciable changes in sensory characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
