1. Electrochemical in-situ studies of solar mediated oxygen transport and turnover dynamics in a tree trunk of Tilia cordata

Abstract

Platinum electrodes were implanted into the xylem of a lime tree (Tilia cordata) stem and solar-induced electrochemical potential differences of up to 120 mV were measured during the vegetative period and up to 30 mV in winter. The time dependent curves were found to be delayed with respect to solar radiation, sap flow activity, temperature and vapor pressure deficit. A general equation for the potential difference was derived and simplified by analyzing the effect of temperature and tensile strength. The potential determining influence of oxygen concentration on the respective location of the platinum electrode was identified as the principal phenomenon measured. A systematic analysis and investigation of the observed periodic oxygen concentration signals promises new information on sap flow, oxygen diffusion through tree tissues and on oxygen consumption related to the energy turnover in tree tissues.

Materials and methods: We summarized overall and progression-free survival by baseline white blood cell count using two analyses: 5×109/L; ≤10 or .10×109/L. Results: There were 446 deaths (treatment choice, n=227; decitabine, n=219). Median overall survival was 5.0 (treatment choice) versus 7.7 months (decitabine; nominal P=0.037). Overall survival differences between white blood cell groups were not significant; hazard ratios (HRs) favored decitabine. Significant progression-free survival differences favored decitabine for groups 1–5×109/L (P=0.005, HR =0.67), greater than 5×109/L (P=0.027, HR =0.71), and up to 10×109/L (P=0.003, HR =0.72). Abstract

In this communication we present a pixel-based algorithm for detection of fog and low stratus (FLS) during the 24H day cycle over land and across Europe, based on geostationary satellite observations.Fog and low Stratus are two persistent types of cloud close to the Earth’s surface. As the cloud-base-height is the only real difference between the two (fog: touching the ground; low stratus: above ground), they are frequently treated together as a single category (FLS) from satellite perspective.The study of FLS life cycles requires a consistent around-the-clock product, which has not been available so far. This study presents a pixel-based method for detection of FLS over land across Europe based on Meteosat-11 SEVIRI (Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager) infrared observations. The method is based on a gradient boosted trees (XGBoost) machine learning model that is trained with observations from Meteorological Aviation Routine Weather Reports (METAR) stations. An intensive validation of the product over 356 METAR stations across Europe over five years of daytime winter data revealed that the method proposed is well capable of detecting FLS over land.Specifically, the algorithm is found to detect FLS with probabilities of detection (POD) ranging from 0.76 to 0.81 (for different inter-comparison approaches), and false alarm ratios (FAR) between 0.31 and 0.32. As the algorithm operates based on the SEVIRI infrared observations only, it can be applied over day and night, making it feasible to continuously monitor the FLS status over large areas over the 24H day cycle.&nbsp, The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)
