Bovine mastitis is the most common disease in dairy cattle worldwide and causes high economic losses to the dairy industry. It can be caused by different microorganisms, as bacteria, fungi, and algae. However, most of these infections are caused by bacteria which have been classified as contagious, opportunistic, and environmental pathogens. Prevention and treatment strategies for bovine mastitis rely primarily on antibiotic therapy. Although it has a positive impact on the dairy industry by contributing to udder health and milk production, it is not always effective. In addition, antimicrobial resistance is also a serious health problem and generates economic losses of billions of dollars. In recent years, there has been a notable increase in interest in the exploration of new antimicrobial compounds from different environments. The soil stands out as a prolific reservoir teeming with enzymes, antibiotics, and natural products. On the other hand, the use of metagenomic approaches allows the identification of a wide range of antimicrobial compounds isolated from soil. This review addresses the potential of metagenomics as a key tool to accelerate the discovery of new antimicrobial compounds, which could have potential applications in the treatment of bovine mastitis.

Porcine Respirovirus 1 (PRV1) is an enveloped, single-stranded, negative-sense RNA virus belonging to the genus Respirovirus within the Paramyxoviridae family. Since its first detection in China in 2013, PRV1 has been identified in several American and European countries. Although its pathogenicity is uncertain, recent studies have suggested that it may play a role in the Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex (PRDC) because of its capacity to replicate in the upper and lower respiratory tracts. This study aimed to determine the spread of PRV1 in Northern Italy and the phylogeny of the isolates. Therefore, PRV1 was investigated using real-time RT-PCR in 902 samples collected from September 2022 to September 2023 from pigs with respiratory symptoms in North Italy. Fourteen (1.55%) samples tested as PRV1-positive. The full-length fusion (F) gene, which codifies for a major surface protein, was amplified and used for phylogenetic analysis to help carry out molecular epidemiological studies on this virus. In addition, swine influenza virus (SIV) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infections were detected in most of the PRV1-positive samples. In conclusion, we report the detection of PRV1 in Italy and discuss its potential role as a co-factor in causing the Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex.

West Nile disease is a vector-borne disease caused by West Nile virus (WNV), involving mosquitoes as vectors and birds as maintenance hosts. Humans and other mammals can be infected via mosquito bites, developing symptoms ranging from mild fever to severe neurological infection. Due to the worldwide spread of WNV, human infection risk is high in several countries. Nevertheless, there are still several knowledge gaps regarding WNV dynamics. Several aspects of transmission taking place between birds and mosquitoes, such as the length of the infectious period in birds or mosquito biting rates, are still not fully understood, and precise quantitative estimates are still lacking for the European species involved. This lack of knowledge affects the precision of parameter values when modelling the infection, consequently resulting in a potential impairment of the reliability of model simulations and predictions and in a lack of the overall understanding of WNV spread. Further investigations are thus needed to better understand these aspects, but field studies, especially those involving several wild species, such as in the case of WNV, can be challenging. Thus, it becomes crucial to identify which transmission processes most influence the dynamics of WNV. In the present work, we propose a sensitivity analysis to investigate which of the selected epidemiological parameters of WNV have the largest impact on the spread of the infection. Based on a mathematical model simulating WNV spread into the Lombardy region (northern Italy), the basic reproduction number of the infection was estimated and used to quantify infection spread into mosquitoes and birds. Then, we quantified how variations in four epidemiological parameters representing the duration of the infectious period in birds, the mosquito biting rate on birds, and the competence and susceptibility to infection of different bird species might affect WNV transmission. Our study highlights that knowledge gaps in WNV epidemiology affect the precision in several parameters. Although all investigated parameters affected the spread of WNV and the modelling precision, the duration of the infectious period in birds and mosquito biting rate are the most impactful, pointing out the need of focusing future studies on a better estimate of these parameters at first. In addition, our study suggests that a WNV outbreak is very likely to occur in all areas with suitable temperatures, highlighting the wide area where WNV represents a serious risk for public health.

Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a great toll on world population in the last 2 years across different groups. Women in pregnancy and in the perinatal period are especially vulnerable to sources of stress, with repercussions on their own mental health and on the wellness of the newborn. Objectives We aimed at assessing the impact of COVID-19 related stress on women’s psychosocial status and evaluate the potential development of anxiety or depressive symptoms in our cohort. Methods From March 2020 to November 2020, our hospital was appointed as an HUB for treating pregnant women positive for Sars-CoV-2 infection. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected, and patients were delivered different self-report psychometric tests such as the GHQ-12, CD-RS, MSPSS, UCLA-8, ISI, IES-6 and DASS-21. We identified two main types of stressors in our population. Being diagnosed with a pregnancy complication, having an ectopic pregnancy or a spontaneous abortion were identified as pregnancy-related stressors. On the other hand, infections or deaths among partners or relatives were defined as covid-related stressors. Scale scores were compared considering main sociodemographic data and possible stressors, both pregnancy-related and covid-related, that may affect women’s mental health. Fisher exact test, Chi square Test and Student’s T test were used when appropriate. Results Among 98 women with complete data at baseline, 21,3% suffered from at least mild anxiety, 21% suffered from at least mild depression, and 41% experienced at least mild stress according to the DASS-21 scale. Moreover, 26,4% reported PTSD symptoms according to the IES-6 scale. Women who experienced a stressor were more likely to report psychiatric symptoms, even more so when exposed to a pregnancy-related stressor. Being Caucasian, a personal psychiatric history or a familial psychiatric history correlated with scoring positive to a higher number of scales. Regarding DASS-21, high total scores in this scale correlated with being Caucasian and having had previous deliveries. More specifically, being Caucasian, older age, previous deliveries and a positive psychiatric history correlated with a higher score in the depression subscale. A positive psychiatric history and a familial psychiatric history correlated with higher scores in the anxiety subscale, while being hospitalized at a late gestational age correlated with lower scores in this section. Scoring above the cut-off of the DASS stress subscale correlated with a positive psychiatric history, a positive familial psychiatric history, being Caucasian, and with an older age of the women in the sample. Conclusions Our results underline the burden of the COVID-19 pandemic on women in pregnancy and in the perinatal period. Tailored interventions should be staged to provide adequate care to this particularly sensitive population, for the wellbeing of both the mother and the child. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Introduction Telepsychiatry (TP) uses communication technology to provide psychiatric consultation to patients unable to reach consultation services. Due to COVID-19 outbreak, many mental health services implemented TP. The University of Milan developed a patient-specialist video consultation service: the Cure Ospedaliere Domiciliari (Home Hospital Care system; COD20). Objectives The aim of the study was to assess the digital skills of the mental health professionals and to assess both the confidence and the satisfaction with the COD20 platform, as well as their skills in handling certain degrees of technostress. Methods Mental health professionals of the outpatient clinics of the department were interviewed through an online anonymous survey. Data collected were sociodemographic, job position, educational level, digital skills, adequacy of devices in the workplace, satisfaction degree, ease of use of the COD20 tool, as well as main technostress score. Data were analyzed using SPSS v.27. Results Among 95 subjects, more than 95% of the sample is familiar with the use of electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and computers; 93% employs appropriate devices in the workplace. Only 12% had an ECDL certificate, while the majority of the sample (77%) learnt the use of electronic devices independently. The levels of the digital skills were considered intermediate-advanced for communication and information research. Despite all the respondents being aware of the use of COD20, only 50% received adequate training; 77% deemed it worthwhile to attend an individual or a group training (40% vs 43%). Telemedicine was used for clinical interviews by 80% of the sample: 41% of these used Telemedicine at least 10 times/year, 18% between 10 and 20 times/year, and 42% more than 20 times/year. Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has strongly impacted mental health outcomes of healthcare workers (HWs). In spite of the large literature reporting on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms, only a few studies focused on potential positive aspects that may follow the exposure to the COVID-19 pandemic, namely post-traumatic growth (PTG) among HWs. Objectives In a large sample of Italian HWs, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of PTSD, its correlates and whether PTG dimensions independently affect the risk of PTSD during the first COVID-19 wave. Methods An online self-report survey was submitted to HWs throughout physicians’ and nurses’ associations, social networks and researchers’ direct contacts, between April 4th and May 13th, 2020. Sociodemographic data, information about possible COVID-19 related stressful events, Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) and PTG Inventory-Short Form (PTGI-SF) scores were collected. IES-R and PTGI-SF scores were compared between subjects based on main sociodemographic, work- and COVID-19-related variables using the Student T-test or the one-way ANOVA where appropriate. Post-hoc comparisons were conducted using the Tukey test. Participants with total IES-R score >32 were assigned a provisional PTSD diagnosis and binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to investigate the contribution of each variable to the provisional PTSD diagnosis. Introduction Telepsychiatry (TP) is the use of telecommunication technologies to provide psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and consultation. During the COVID-19 outbreak, TP has shown potential for connecting with people unable to access traditional in-person services, and also enabling patients to receive mental health care safely from home. The Home Hospital care system (Cure Ospedaliere Domiciliari; COD20) is a video consultation service developed by the University of Milan. Objectives We aimed at investigating the potential of Telemedicine (TM) in a sample of psychiatric patients. Methods As of now, 208 consecutive patients of an outpatient clinic belonging to ASST Fatebenefratelli-Sacco in Milan were interviewed through an online anonymous survey. Data collected were sociodemographic, job position, educational level, digital skills and both satisfaction degree and ease of use of the COD20 tool. Data were analyzed using SPSS v.27. Results Among 208 patients, 87.7% had Internet access, 94.5% used a smartphone, 74% used a computer and 37% used a tablet. The levels of digital skills were considered intermediate-advanced in communication and information research for the majority of the cases. A high percentage of patients (80.8%) learned how to use electronic devices by themselves, while only 12.3% had an ECDL certificate. The most represented diagnoses were Mood Disorders (44.5%) and Anxiety Disorders (14%). The majority of the sample (54.8%) was visited using TM for clinical interviews: 24.7% of them used TM at least 10 times/year, and 19.8% more than 20 times/year. Among all the clinical interviews conducted using TM, 61% concerned psychiatric consultation, while 30% were dedicated to psychotherapy. The most used tool was the COD20 platform (21.9%): it was considered easy to use in 47.9% of cases, while 43.8% of patients would like to use it again in the future. The main reasons leading to the usage of TM were the difficulties in reaching the ambulatory (for 43.9%) and the workplace (for 30%). Image: Image 2: Conclusions TM represents a valid implementation in the traditional clinical practice, and we showed it is well received in terms of appreciation and ease of use. The COD20 platform could increase access to care, and overcome barriers such as distance, travel costs and time management. Despite their widespread use, network visualisations can be rather challenging to design and use. This is due to the fact that such visualisations are generally used to represent highly complex underlying data sets. As such, the resulting charts often include a very large number of visual elements and many non-linear relations between them that must be displayed. More effective design-oriented approaches are therefore needed to better support designers in creating network visualisations for complex data sets that are more understandable and usable for their users. The use of visual metaphors seems to offer such an approach to designing visualisations of complex data. In this article, we propose the use of wayfinding map metaphor in network diagrams to support both the designers and users of this type of data visualisation. We also provide a mapping of the three common map wayfinding tasks – orientation, exploration, and navigation – to three categories of network diagram user interactions. To demonstrate the potential of our proposed approach, we provide an example case study using a prototype network diagram visualisation tool – Colocalisation Network Explorer – which we have developed to support the exploration of relationships between various diseases and the portion of the human genome involved in their onset. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic greatly impacted healthcare workers (HWs) around the world. Italy was the first Western country hit by the pandemic, and several studies have been published targeting the mental health burden held by Italian HWs. Notwithstanding, only a few studies focused on the impact of COVID-19 on HWs' levels of functioning. Methods: An online survey was distributed to HWs in Italy through physicians' and nurses' associations, social networks, and researchers' direct contacts, between 4 April and 13 May 2020. Participants provided sociodemographic, work-related, and pandemic-related data and filled out a set of psychometric questionnaires (Patient Health Questionnaire-9—PHQ-9, General Anxiety Disorder-7—GAD-7, Impact of Event Scale—Revised—IES-R, and Work and Social Adjustment Scale—WSAS). Results: The final sample included 1041 HWs (mean age 45.01 ± 11.62, 63.9% females). In total, 58.1% of the subjects screened positive on the GAD-7, 27.5% on the PHQ-9, and 25.9% on the IES-R. Furthermore, 67.4% showed a significant level of impairment in functioning according to the WSAS, while 35.8% reached scores of moderate or worse impairment. In the multiple linear regressions, screening positive on any of the psychometric scales and being exposed to unusual suffering significantly predicted worse scores in all WSAS domains (p < 0.05). Having a history of mental disorders significantly predicted worse scores in the WSAS domain of work ability (p = 0.002), while being the parent of children younger than 18 years significantly predicted worse WSAS family functioning scores (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our results corroborate extant data about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on HWs' mental health and shed light on its detrimental effect on functioning. Abstract The potential of genomic selection (GS) to increase the efficiency of breeding programs has been clearly demonstrated; however, the implementation of GS in rice (Oryza sativa L.) breeding programs has been limited. In recent years, efforts have begun to work toward implementing GS into the Louisiana State University (LSU) Agricultural Center rice breeding program. One of the first steps for successful GS implementation is to establish a suitable marker set for the target germplasm and a reliable, cost‐effective genotyping platform capable of providing informative marker data with an adequate turnaround time. The objective of this study was to develop a marker set for routine GS and demonstrate its effectiveness in southern U.S. rice germplasm. The utility of the resulting marker set, the LSU500, for GS applications was demonstrated using four years of breeding data across 7,607 experimental lines and four elite biparental populations. The predictive ability of GS ranged from 0.13 to 0.78 for key traits across different market classes and yield trials. Comparisons between phenotypic selection and GS within biparental populations demonstrates similar performance of GS compared with phenotypic selection in predicting future performance. The prediction accuracies obtained with the LSU500 marker set demonstrates the utility of this marker set for cost‐effective GS applications in southern U.S. rice breeding programs. The LSU500 marker set has been established through the genotyping service provider Agriplex Genomics, and in the future, it will undergo improvements to reduce the cost and increase the accuracy of GS.

Rice grain shape is a major determinant of rice market value and the end-use. We mapped quantitative trait loci (QTL) for grain shape traits in a bi-parental recombinant inbred line population (Trenasse/Jupiter) and discovered two major grain length QTLs—qGL3.1 and qGL7.1. Previously, a major grain shape gene GS3 was reported in the qGL3.1 region and grain length gene GL7 was reported to be encompassing qGL7.1 locus. The re-sequencing SNP data on the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) 3K Rice Genome Project (RGP) panel were obtained from the IRRI SNP-Seek database for both genes and haplotype diversity was characterized for each gene in this diverse panel. United States rice germplasm was not well represented in the IRRI 3K RGP database. Therefore, a minimum SNP set was identified for each gene that could differentiate all the characterized haplotypes. These haplotypes in the 3K RGP panel were screened across 323 elite U.S. genotypes using the minimum SNP set. The screening of haplotypes and phenotype association confirmed the role of GS3 under qGL3.1. However, screening of the GL7 haplotypes in the U.S. germplasm panel showed that GL7 did not play a role in qGL7.1, and in addition, GL7.1 did not segregate in the Trenasse/Jupiter RIL population. This concluded that qGL7.1 is a novel QTL discovered on chr7 for grain shape in the Trenasse/Jupiter RIL population. A high-throughput KASP-based SNP marker for each locus (GS3 and qGL7.1) was identified and validated in elite U.S. rice germplasm to be used in an applied rice breeding program.
