1. Knowledge, attitudes and practices towards tuberculosis: results of a community-based survey in the Karamoja subregion, North Eastern Uganda

Abstract

Abstract Background The Karamoja subregion in north-eastern Uganda has very high Tuberculosis (TB)case notification rates and, until recently, had suboptimal treatment completion rates among patients diagnosed with TB. We evaluated community knowledge, attitudes and practices towards Tuberculosis in order to identify barriers to TB control in this region. Methods From September to October 2022, we conducted a community-based survey in four districts in the Karamoja subregion. We collected data on TB knowledge, attitudes, and practices using a structured electronic questionnaire. We generated knowledge, attitude and practice scores. We used a survey-weighted zero-truncated modified Poisson model to assess the association between knowledge/attitude scores and respondents’ characteristics and a complementary log-log model to assess the association between practice scores and respondents’ characteristics. Data analysis was carried out using STATA version 14. Results A total of 1927 respondents were interviewed. Of these, 55.5% were female, and 1320 (68.6%) had no formal education. Overall, 68.5% 95% CI (59.6–76.7%) had knowledge scores of ≥ 60%. Higher TB knowledge scores were associated with being employed (adjusted prevalence ratio, aPR = 1.22, 95% CI 1.04–1.42, p = 0.01) while being a wife in a household was associated with lower TB knowledge (aPR = 0.90, 95% CI 0.82–0.99, p = 0.03). Being 25–34 years old was associated with a positive attitude towards TB (PR = 1.06, 1.01–1.11, p = 0.01). Over 85% of respondents would go to the health facility immediately if they had TB signs and symptoms. Almost all respondents (98.6%) would start TB treatment immediately if diagnosed with the disease. Conclusion More than two thirds of patients had good knowledge and practices towards TB which can be leveraged to improve uptake of TB control interventions in the region. Additional interventions to improve TB knowledge and practice should focus on specific segments within the communities e.g., older women in the households.

4. Hyperparameter optimization of hp-greedy reduced basis for gravitational wave surrogates

Abstract

In a previous work we introduced, in the context of gravitational wave science, an initial study on an automated domain-decomposition approach for reduced basis through hp-greedy refinement. The approach constructs local reduced bases of lower dimensionality than global ones, with the same or higher accuracy. These ``light'' local bases should imply both faster evaluations when predicting new waveforms and faster data analysis, in particular faster statistical inference (the forward and inverse problems, respectively). In this approach, however, we have previously found important dependence on several hyperparameters, which do not appear in global reduced basis. This naturally leads to the problem of hyperparameter optimization (HPO), which is the subject of this paper. We tackle the problem through a Bayesian optimization, and show its superiority when compared to grid or random searches. We find that for gravitational waves from the collision of two spinning but non-precessing black holes, for the same accuracy, local hp-greedy reduced bases with HPO have a lower dimensionality of up to $4 \times$ for the cases here studied, depending on the desired accuracy. This factor should directly translate in a parameter estimation speedup, for instance. Such acceleration might help in the near real-time requirements for electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences. In addition, we find that the Bayesian approach used in this paper for HPO is two orders of magnitude faster than, for example, a grid search, with about a $100 \times$ acceleration. 5. Perceived Control across the Adult Lifespan: Longitudinal Changes in Global Control and Daily Stressor Control

Abstract

Perceived control is an important psychosocial resource for health and well-being across the lifespan. Global control (i.e., overall perceived control) decreases over time in studies following people every few years to upwards of 10 years. Changes across wider intervals of the lifespan, however, have yet to be examined. Further, how perceived control changes for specific aspects of daily life, such as stressors, remains comparatively less clear. Using data from the Midlife in the United States National Study of Daily Experiences (NSDE, N = 1,940, M = 56.25 years, SD = 12.20, 57% female), we examined longitudinal changes in global control across 20 years and daily stressor control across 10 years. Global control was assessed in the first wave of the NSDE ([approximately]1996). In follow-up waves, conducted in [approximately] 2008 and [approximately] 2017, participants again not only reported their global control but also reported their perceived control over stressors they experience across 8 consecutive days. Longitudinal analyses revealed differential change trajectories for global control across 20 years and stressor control across 10 years (ps < 0.001). Global control declined for younger and older adults but stayed relatively stable for individuals in midlife. The rate of decline in daily stressor control was steeper than the decline in global control and did not vary by age at baseline. In addition, declines were amplified among individuals with higher global control at baseline. Results suggest that daily stressor control is a specific aspect of control beliefs that follows a different rate of change than global control.

Abstract

The present study examines change in reports of daily, weekly, and monthly psychological distress over 20 years, and of negative and positive affect over 10 years, using data from the Midlife in the United States study. The study includes three waves of data collection on adults ranging from 22 to 95 years old. Cross-sectional findings reveal that older age is related to lower levels of psychological distress and negative affect and to higher levels of positive affect across each successive age group. Yet, longitudinal findings vary across younger, middle-aged, and older adults. Psychological distress decreases over time among younger adults (although only until age 33 for weekly reports), remains stable in midlife, and is stable (monthly) or slightly increases (daily and weekly) among older adults. For negative affect, levels decrease over time for younger and middle-aged adults, and only increase for the oldest adults for daily and monthly affect. Positive affect is stable over time among younger adults, but decreases in midlife starting in the mid-fifties. In conclusion, overall patterns of findings suggest that being old (assessed cross-sectionally) is related to higher levels of emotional well-being. Growing old (assessed longitudinally) is related to improvements in emotional well-being across younger and early middle adulthood, which mirrors cross-sectional findings. 10. An automated parameter domain decomposition approach for gravitational wave surrogates using hp-greedy refinement

Abstract

We introduce hp-greedy, a refinement approach for building gravitational wave surrogates as an extension of the standard reduced basis framework. Our proposal is data-driven, with a domain decomposition of the parameter space, local reduced basis, and a binary tree as the resulting structure, which are obtained in an automated way. When compared to the standard global reduced basis approach, the numerical simulations of our proposal show three salient features: i) representations of lower dimension with no loss of accuracy, ii) a significantly higher accuracy for a fixed maximum dimensionality of the basis, in some cases by orders of magnitude, and iii) results that depend on the reduced basis seed choice used by the refinement algorithm. We first illustrate the key parts of our approach with a toy model and then present a more realistic use case of gravitational waves emitted by the collision of two spinning, non-precessing black holes. We discuss performance aspects of hp-greedy, such as overfitting with respect to the depth of the tree structure, and other hyperparameter dependences. As two direct applications of the proposed hp-greedy refinement, we envision: i) a further acceleration of statistical inference, which might be complementary to focused reduced-order quadratures, and ii) the search of gravitational waves through clustering and nearest neighbors., Comment: 16 pages, code available from authors upon request

Abstract

This study examined age-related patterns in exposure and affective reactivity to daily stressors across a 20-year time span among adults who were between 22 and 77 years old at their baseline interview. Longitudinal data from the National Study of Daily Experiences (NSDE) consisted of three bursts of eight consecutive nightly interviews of stress and affect. Analyses made use of all available data from a U.S. National sample of respondents who participated in any of the three NSDE bursts (N = 2,845; number of daily assessments = 33,688). Findings revealed increasing age-related benefits. Younger adults (< 30 years) reported the highest levels of stressor exposure and reactivity, but their stress profile improved with age. Over time, adults averaged an 11% reduction in the occurrence of stressor days, and the younger adults exhibited an even steeper decline (a 47% reduction) in their levels of stressor reactivity. For people in midlife and old age, stressor occurrence continued to decrease over time, yet among adults aged 54 years or older at baseline, stress reactivity remained stable across time. 13. The Importance of Recognising and Promoting Independence in Young Children: The Role of the Environment and the Danish Forest School Approach

Abstract

This report offers insight into a reflective and critical practitioner's role in carefully planning an environment that reflects young children's need for independence. Education as an agent of liberation is the key to the child obtaining that freedom and achieving independence. It is argued that liberation can only be achieved when an effective pedagogy that considers children's perception and ideas is implemented. Information obtained from evaluating children helps in the construction and organisation of spaces within which young children can express their potential and satisfy their desire for independence. This process contributes to teachers' learning and professional development and strengthens teachers' relationships with parents and children. Danish society's values and customs have led to the development of the Forest School approach, in which kindergartens use the outdoors in a unique and cultural way. Forest School provides the ideal environment to nurture independence and promote children's well-being.

Abstract

We analyze a prospect for predicting gravitational waveforms from compact binaries based on automated machine learning (AutoML) from around a hundred different possible regression models, without having to resort to tedious and manual case-by-case analyses and fine-tuning. The particular study of this article is within the context of the gravitational waves emitted by the collision of two spinless black holes in initial quasi-circular orbit. We find, for example, that approaches such as Gaussian process regression with radial bases as kernels do provide a sufficiently accurate solution, an approach which is generalizable to multiple dimensions with low computational evaluation cost. The results here presented suggest that AutoML might provide a framework for regression in the field of surrogates for gravitational waveforms. Our study is within the context of surrogates of numerical relativity simulations based on Reduced Basis and the Empirical Interpolation Method, where we find that for the particular case analyzed AutoML can produce surrogates which are essentially indistinguishable from the NR simulations themselves., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Abstract Coccolithophores, marine calcifying phytoplankton, are important primary producers impacting the global carbon cycle at different timescales. Their biomineral structures, the calcite containing coccoliths, are among the most elaborate hard parts of any organism. Understanding the morphogenesis of coccoliths is not only relevant in the context of coccolithophore eco-physiology but will also inform biomineralization and crystal design research more generally. The recent discovery of a silicon (Si) requirement for crystal shaping in some coccolithophores has opened up a new avenue of biomineralization research. In order to develop a mechanistic understanding of the role of Si, the presence and localization of this chemical element in coccoliths needs to be known. Here, we document for the first time the uneven Si distribution in Helicosphaera carteri coccoliths through three synchrotron-based techniques employing X-ray Fluorescence and Infrared Spectromicroscopy. The enrichment of Si in specific areas of the coccoliths point to a targeted role of this element in the coccolith formation. Our findings mark a key step in biomineralization research because it opens the door for a detailed mechanistic understanding of the role Si plays in shaping coccolith crystals.

Abstract

Objectives To assess the survival predictivity of baseline blood cell differential count (BCDC), discretised according to two different methods, in adults visiting an emergency room (ER) for illness or trauma over 1 year.Design Retrospective cohort study of hospital records.Setting Tertiary care public hospital in northern Italy.Participants 11 052 patients aged >18 years, consecutively admitted to the ER in 1 year, and for whom BCDC collection was indicated by ER medical staff at first presentation.Primary outcome Survival was the referral outcome for explorative model development. Automated BCDC analysis at baseline assessed haemoglobin, mean cell volume (MCV), red cell distribution width (RDW), platelet distribution width (PDW), platelet haematocrit (PCT), absolute red blood cells, white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils and platelets. Discretisation cut-offs were defined by benchmark and tailored methods. Benchmark cut-offs were stated based on laboratory reference values (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute). Tailored cut-offs for linear, sigmoid-shaped and U-shaped distributed variables were discretised by maximally selected rank statistics and by optimal-equal HR, respectively. Explanatory variables (age, gender, ER admission during SARS-CoV2 surges and in-hospital admission) were analysed using Cox multivariable regression. Receiver operating curves were drawn by summing the Cox-significant variables for each method.Results Of 11 052 patients (median age 67 years, IQR 51–81, 48% female), 59% (n=6489) were discharged and 41% (n=4563) were admitted to the hospital. After a 306-day median follow-up (IQR 208–417 days), 9455 (86%) patients were alive and 1597 (14%) deceased. Increased HRs were associated with age >73 years (HR=4.6, 95% CI=4.0 to 5.2), in-hospital admission (HR=2.2, 95% CI=1.9 to 2.4), ER admission during SARS-CoV2 surges (Wave I: HR=1.7, 95% CI=1.5 to 1.9; Wave II: HR=1.2, 95% CI=1.0 to 1.3). Gender, haemoglobin, MCV, RDW, PDW, neutrophils, lymphocytes and eosinophil counts were significant overall. Benchmark-BCDC model included basophils and platelet count (area under the ROC (AUROC) 0.74). Tailored-BCDC model included monocyte counts and PCT (AUROC 0.79).Conclusions Baseline discretised BCDC provides meaningful insight regarding ER patients’ survival.

Introducción: en el embarazo son de suma importancia habitos alimenticios saludables debido a que estos pueden reducir considerablemente el riesgo de sobrepeso, obesidad, enfermedades cardiovasculares y trastornos hipertensivos como la preeclampsia y eclampsia.Objetivo: determinar diferencias en los hábitos alimenticios en mujeres con embarazo saludable en comparación con las mujeres que desarrollaron preeclampsia. Material y Métodos: estudio comparativo en 100 mujeres, 50 con embarazo saludable y 50 que desarrollaron preeclampsia. Se aplicó la encuesta nutricional en situación de embarazo. Se analizaron diferencias con la prueba Chi Cuadrado de Pearson. Resultados: las mujeres que desarrollaron preeclampsia reportaron menor frecuencia de consumo de pescado (p=.013), frutas (p=.012), frutos secos (p=.008) y postres (p=.005) y mayor consumo de pan (p=.003) y arroz o pasta (p=.007). Conclusiones: Los hábitos alimenticios en el embarazo son muy importantes, las mujeres con embarazo saludable tienen una alimentación diferente que las que desarrollaron preeclampsia. Las mujeres sin preeclampsia indicaron que con mayor periodicidad consumieron pescado, frutas, frutos secos y postres y las mujeres con preeclampsia reportaron consumir con mayor frecuencia pan, arroz o pasta.

Abstract

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, known to affect almost any organ and system in the body, triggering a powerful, but often dysregulated immune response that contributes to the creation (or worsening) of a chronic inflammatory state. Consequently, this impacts many biological processes including aging. Therefore, we performed an overview of the current literature on the consequences and manifestations of COVID-19 on nails, hair, and skin, but also on its sequelae on cognitive functions, on its effects on the diagnosis of skin cancers, and on molecular mechanisms of aging focusing primarily on telomeres length. We concluded that COVID-19 had a detrimental effect on the aging process and that these effects varied among different patient populations. COVID-19 seems to accelerate and exacerbate the occurrence of many dermatological disorders that are typical of the elderly. Moreover, it impacted the cognitive functions of patients and patients that reported cognitive dysfunctions months after the resolution of the infection.

41. Prevalence and genotype distribution of caprine papillomavirus in peripheral blood of healthy goats in farms from three European countries

Abstract

Caprine papillomaviruses (ChPVs, Capra hircus papillomaviruses) were detected and quantified for the first time using droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) in blood samples of 374 clinically healthy goats from farms located in Italy, Romania, and Serbia. Overall, ddPCR revealed ChPV DNA in 78 of the 374 examined samples, indicating that ~21% of the goats harbored circulating papillomavirus DNA. In particular, in Italian goat farms, ChPV genotypes were detected and quantified in 58 of 157 blood samples (~37%), 11 of 117 samples from Serbian farms (~9.4%), and 9 of 100 from Romanian blood samples (9%). Blood samples from Italian goat farms showed a high prevalence of ChPV1, which was detected in 45 samples (28.6%). The ChPV2 genotype was detected in 13 samples (~8.3%). Therefore, significant differences in prevalence and genotype distributions were observed. On Serbian and Romanian farms, no significant differences were observed in the genotype prevalence of ChPVs. Molecular findings are consistent with ChPV prevalence, characterized by a territorial distribution similar to that of papillomaviruses in other mammalian species. Furthermore, this study showed that ddPCR is a very sensitive and accurate assay for ChPV detection and quantification. The ddPCR may be the molecular diagnostic tool of choice, ultimately providing useful insights into the molecular epidemiology and field surveillance of ChPV.

Abstract

Objetivo: Describir la experiencia de personas con enfermedad renal crónica y sus familiares allegados al enfrentarse a la búsqueda y elección de donador vivo relacionado. Material y método: Estudio cualitativo de carácter descriptivo. Participaron 14 personas, de los cuales 9 buscaban un trasplante renal y 5 eran familiares allegados, se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas durante septiembre 2019 a mayo 2020, las cuales fueron analizadas bajo procedimientos básicos de análisis cualitativo propuestos desde la teoría fundamentada. Resultados: Se identificaron 7 categorías, las cuales se dividieron en dos dimensiones, experiencias y estrategias. Los participantes refieren desconocer del trasplante de donador vivo como un tratamiento para la enfermedad renal crónica y vivir bajo una amenaza constante de morir o agravar; se considera la donación como un regalo que salva la vida, el cual debe ser realizado lo antes posible. Ante ese escenario, los participantes refieren buscar el mayor apoyo para realizar el trasplante, prepararse para estar en condiciones que les permitan realizarlo y buscar activar diversos mecanismos o estrategias dentro del sistema de salud para acceder a sus necesidades. Conclusiones: Los hallazgos apuntan: 1) la necesidad de brindar acompañamiento emocional, ante la amenaza constante que experimentan los participantes, 2) la necesidad de organizar los servicios para acortar la carrera contra el tiempo que experimentan los participantes durante su búsqueda de trasplante y disminuir costos, y 3) las inequidades que enfrentan los participantes los orillan a buscar maneras de agilizar su acceso aunque se encuentren en los límites de las normativas de las instituciones de salud. Objective: To describe the experience of people with chronic kidney disease and their close relatives when facing the search and choice of a related living donor, to identify the strategies they use and the problems and obstacles they face. Material and method: Qualitative descriptive study. 14 people participated, of which 9 were seeking a kidney transplant and 5 were close relatives, semi-structured interviews were carried out during September 2019 to May 2020, which were analyzed under basic procedures proposed from grounded theory. Results: Seven categories were identified, which were divided into two dimensions, experiences and strategies. The participants refer to not being aware of living donor transplantation as a treatment for chronic kidney disease and living under constant threat of death or aggravation, where donation is considered a life-saving gift, which must be made as soon as possible. Faced with this scenario, the participants refer to seeking the greatest support to carry out the transplant, preparing to be in a position to allow them to perform it, and seeking ways for the health system to respond to their needs, even if this is within the limits of the norms. Conclusions: The findings point to: 1) the need to provide emotional support, faced with the constant threat experienced by the participants, 2) the need to organize services to shorten the race against time experienced by participants during their transplant search and reduce costs, and 3) the inequities faced by the participants drive them to look for ways to speed up their access even if they are within the limits of the regulations of health institutions. 44. Aging-Related Changes in the Association between Negative Affect and Response Time Inconsistency in Older Adulthood

Abstract

Negative affect (NA) and positive affect (PA) are established modifiable psychosocial correlates of cognitive health and have demonstrated capacity for meaningful within-person fluctuations based on person--environment interactions, age, and measurement approach. Previous research has shown NA is associated with increased response time inconsistency (RTI), an early performance-based indicator of cognitive health and aging. It is unclear, however, whether PA is associated with RTI and whether affect-RTI associations exist within persons over time or change as individuals get older. We utilized data from a measurement burst study (Cognition, Health, and Aging Project) to explore within- and between-person associations between affect and RTI in community-dwelling older adults (N = 111, M = 80.04 years, SD = 6.30). Affect and RTI were assessed on 6 days over a 2-week period, every 6 months for 2 years. Results revealed a significant association between NA-low arousal and RTI within persons over time. RTI was higher on sessions when NA-low arousal was higher than usual (b = 0.21, 95% CI [0.08, 0.35], p < 0.01). This association decreased in magnitude over time (b = -0.09, 95% CI [-0.14, -0.03], p < 0.001), ultimately resulting in increased NA-low arousal being associated with decreased RTI 2 years later (b = -0.14, 95% CI [-0.27, -0.01], p < 0.05). No PA-RTI associations emerged. The results suggest efforts focused on maximizing resource allocation and personalizing cognitive health efforts should consider for whom and when mitigating NA may be maximally beneficial to daily cognition, whereas additional work is needed to determine influences from PA.

Abstract

Abstract Background Genomic surveillance of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the only approach to rapidly monitor and tackle emerging variants of concern (VOC) of the COVID-19 pandemic. Such scrutiny is crucial to limit the spread of VOC that might escape the immune protection conferred by vaccination strategies or previous virus exposure. It is also becoming clear now that efficient genomic surveillance would require monitoring of the host gene expression to identify prognostic biomarkers of treatment efficacy and disease progression. Here we propose an integrative workflow to both generate thousands of SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences per week and analyze host gene expression upon infection. Methods In this study we applied an integrated workflow for RNA extracted from nasal swabs to obtain in parallel the full genome of SARS-CoV-2 and transcriptome of host respiratory epithelium. The RNA extracted from each sample was reverse transcribed and the viral genome was specifically enriched through an amplicon-based approach. The very same RNA was then used for patient transcriptome analysis. Samples were collected in the Campania region, Italy, for viral genome sequencing. Patient transcriptome analysis was performed on about 700 samples divided into two cohorts of patients, depending on the viral variant detected (B.1 or delta). Results We sequenced over 20,000 viral genomes since the beginning of the pandemic, producing the highest number of sequences in Italy. We thus reconstructed the pandemic dynamics in the regional territory from March 2020 to December 2021. In addition, we have matured and applied novel proof-of-principle approaches to prioritize possible gain-of-function mutations by leveraging patients’ metadata and isolated patient-specific signatures of SARS-CoV-2 infection. This allowed us to (i) identify three new viral variants that specifically originated in the Campania region, (ii) map SARS-CoV-2 intrahost variability during long-term infections and in one case identify an increase in the number of mutations in the viral genome, and (iii) identify host gene expression signatures correlated with viral load in upper respiratory ways. Conclusion In conclusion, we have successfully generated an optimized and cost-effective strategy to monitor SARS-CoV-2 genetic variability, without the need of automation. Thus, our approach is suitable for any lab with a benchtop sequencer and a limited budget, allowing an integrated genomic surveillance on premises. Finally, we have also identified a gene expression signature defining SARS-CoV-2 infection in real-world patients’ upper respiratory ways.

Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo evaluar los parámetros pH, temperatura del agua, SDT, color, turbiedad y DQO en un sistema de humedales artificiales conectados en serie, alimentados con aguas residuales de tipo doméstico. Los humedales artificiales han sido evaluados en diferentes tipos de climas y diseños, demostrando ser eficientes en el tratamiento de las aguas residuales domésticas. En la División Académica de Ciencias Biológicas se trata el agua proveniente de sanitarios y cafeterías con un sistema de tratamiento de aguas residuales que consiste en un cárcamocisterna y dos trenes de tratamiento tren tiene tres humedales en serie que operan con un humedal artificial de flujo subsuperficial con Pontederia cordata, un humedal artificial de flujo libre con Thalia geniculata y un humedal artificial de flujo libre con Sagittaria lancifolia. El gasto de operación es de 42.29 m3/día, con un tiempo de retención de 21.8 horas. El sistema evaluado en mayo de 2020 mostró una eficiencia de remoción de DQO de 78.65%, 62.2% de turbiedad y de color 61.4%. Sagittaria lancifolia demostró mejores resultados. Las tres especies son de fácil mantenimiento y eficientes en la remoción de contaminantes básicos. Los valores obtenidos son referentes de una eficiencia aceptable tomando en cuenta las condiciones extraordinarias de operación, ya que la institución educativa se encontraba trabajando con un 5% de personal y estudiantes, debido a la temporada de contingencia nacional e internacional por el COVID-19.

50. Improving sport-based psychosocial interventions in Europe: results from the EASMH training programme for professional sport coaches

Abstract

Introduction In the framework of the EU-Erasmus+, the European Alliance for Sport and Mental Health (EASMH) project has been funded, aiming to promote the improvement of good clinical practice for sport-based psychosocial interventions throughout Europe. A specific training programme tailoring professional sport coaches has been developed in order to improve their skills in engaging and involving patients with severe mental disorders in sport-based rehabilitation activities. Objectives to evaluate the perceived quality and utility of the EASMH training programme by sport coaches from different European countries (including Italy, UK, Romania, and Finland). Methods As part of the EASMH project, the University of Campania “L. Vanvitelli” has coordinated the development of training materials for professional sport coaches. The training programme has been tested in a pilot training programme. An ad-hoc questionnaire has been developed and administered at the end of the training, during a meeting held in Brussels in July 2022. Results The EASMH training programme consists of six modules, dealing with the following topics: definition of mental health/mental disorders; classification systems; essential clinical features of severe mental disorders; personal and social burden associated with severe mental disorders; how to build a therapeutic relationship with a patient with severe mental disorders; verbal and non-verbal communication; evaluation of patient’s preference in selecting sport activities; definition of a personalized plan; motivational interview/problem-solving strategy. A total of eight professional coaches involved in different sport coming from Italy, Romania, United Kingdom and Finland participated in the entire training, consisting of six 4hr training modules. Seven out the eight coaches compiled the questionnaire. The overall feedback has been extremely positive. Overall, coaches have judged the modules as very clear, useful and of high standing. Each question has been rated with an average of 4.35 related to the overall content. Conclusions The present survey confirms that a short online training programme focused on professional sport coaches is well received by participants and can provide them with useful information on how to engage patients with severe mental disorders. The next step of the EASMH project foresees the implementation of several local pilot actions with the active involvement of patients with severe mental disorders.
