The objective of this work was to study the properties of new vitreous samples of pure BAlMgLi and Ce-doped BAlMgLi produced by the melt-quenching method. The structural and vibrational characteristics of the samples were analyzed using x-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrational Raman spectroscopy, and vibrational Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) techniques were also used to identify whether the samples showed a response to ionizing radiation. XRD analyses confirmed the predominance of the amorphous phase of the samples. The Raman spectra revealed that the atomic bonds present in the material matrix are of the pyroborate and metaborate type, enabling stretching vibrations in isolated BO 4 and/or Al-O or Al-O-B units. The band at approximately 810 cm -1 is characteristic of the formation of the boroxol ring, indicating that the presence of other elements in the matrix does not affect its glassy characteristics. The FTIR analyses reinforce the results found by Raman spectroscopy, because bands characteristic of low hygroscopic glasses were observed, due to the conversion of BO 3 units into BO 4 in triborate, tetraborate, and pentaborate groups. This conversion is due to dopant entrainment, which contributes to the high optical transparency of the samples. Neutron spectrum unfolding is a crucial process in radiation protection and dosimetry. Unfolding codes using iterative algorithms require a criterion to stop the iterations. One approach often relies on the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) criterion to assess the convergence of iterative algorithms. The aim of this work is to present a new criteria: Average Ratio Scaled (AVGS) and Relative Change in AVGS (dAVGS) to address specific challenges associated with RMSE. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) have gained significant attention in biomedical research due to their potential applications. However, little is known about their impact and toxicity on testicular cells. To address this issue, we conducted an in vitro study using primary mouse testicular cells, testis fragments, and sperm to investigate the cytotoxic effects of sodium citrate-coated SPIONs (Cit_SPIONs). Herein, we synthesized and physiochemically characterized the Cit_SPIONs and observed that the sodium citrate diminished the size and improved the stability of nanoparticles in solution during the experimental time. The sodium citrate (measured by thermogravimetry) was biocompatible with testicular cells at the used concentration (3%). Despite these favorable physicochemical properties, the in vitro experiments demonstrated the cytotoxicity of Cit_SPIONs, particularly towards testicular somatic cells and sperm cells. Transmission electron microscopy analysis confirmed that Leydig cells preferentially internalized Cit_SPIONs in the organotypic culture system, which resulted in alterations in their cytoplasmic size. Additionally, we found that Cit_SPIONs exposure had detrimental effects on various parameters of sperm cells, including motility, viability, DNA integrity, mitochondrial activity, lipid peroxidation (LPO), and ROS production. Our findings suggest that testicular somatic cells and sperm cells are highly sensitive and vulnerable to Cit_SPIONs and induced oxidative stress. This study emphasizes the potential toxicity of SPIONs, indicating significant threats to the male reproductive system. Landfills often become a source of environmental impact due to the percolation of the leachate (liquid resulting from the decomposition of buried waste), which can eventually disperse and contaminate the soil and water bodies. This study aimed to evaluate quantitatively and spatially the leachate plume from the former Belo Horizonte landfill in the Coqueiros and Taiobas watersheds by using tritium ( 3 H) concentration in nineteen (19) sampling points: 14 groundwater, 4 surface water and 1 leachate. Among the methodologies applied to determine the 3 H content in the leachate, pre-filtration proved to be the most effective due to the ease treating of the sample, as well as the identical results obtained compared to the traditional method. The 3 H contents resulted in concentrations up to thirty times higher in the leachate (=96,19 to 111,87 TU) and ten times in groundwater (PM23/3 = 45,06 TU), compared to the calculated threshold (TS) of rainfall tritium (TS_ 3 Hrain = 3,41 TU). Temporal series results indicate no trend and no influence of seasonality regarding the entry of pluvial tritium, leachate liquid level and wells water level. The 3 H contour maps shows a transport of the mixture (water and leachate) towards the Coqueiros stream, with a higher concentration of leachate in wells closer to the landfill slope (PM13, PM14, PM15, and PM23) and in the southwest margin of the Coqueiros stream (PM17). In the furthest portion of the landfill, 3 H levels are higher than the base threshold only at the deepest level of PM20 (=3,90 TU), possibly due to factors such as: i) denser character of the leachate compared to groundwater; ii) greater influence of recharge for regions further away from the landfill slope; and iii) the presence of the rock about 50 m from the surface. Based on the hydrogeological conceptual model, the transport of the leachate water mixture in the groundwater water compartment of the Coqueiros watershed basin seems to follow a piston or dispersion flow, with a small Peclet number (P d  = 0,05, as an example), as indicated by the high correlation coefficient values (R 2  ≈ 0,85 to 0,99) from graphic interpolation. The mixture of water and leachate results in a transient time (t t ) ≈ 30 years and linear velocity (V l ) ≈ 3-14 m/year in the interpolated sections. These indicate a coherent correlation with the mean hydraulic conductivity (K ≈ 29,34 m/year), as they result in effective porosity values between (Ne) ≈ 0.16 to 0.36, which corresponds to Ne range for unconsolidated sediments, similar to the wells lithotype profiles. In this study, calcium ferrites with different Ca : Fe atomic ratios (1 : 1, 1 : 2, 1 : 3 and 2 : 1) were prepared from Ca and Fe nitrates treated at 300, 700 and 900 °C and evaluated for phosphate adsorption and recovery from wastewater. TG, XRD, Mössbauer spectroscopy, SEM, VSM magnetic measurements, and BET analyses showed the formation of two different calcium ferrite phases, i.e. , CaFe 2 O 4 and Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 at 700 and 900 °C. The adsorption results indicated that the formation of calcium ferrite structure is critical for phosphate adsorption/recovery. Evaluation of the pH, initial phosphate concentration, contact time, coexisting ions and desorption conditions showed remarkable adsorption capacities of 62-75 mg g -1 for CaFe1:2-700 and 28-43 mg g -1 for CaFe1:2-900. The skin is the largest organ in the human body that acts as a protective barrier from the outside environment. Certain dermatological pathologies or significant skin lesions can result in serious complications. Several studies have focused on the development of tissue-engineered skin substitutes. In this study, a new bilayer scaffold composed of a chitosan-gelatin membrane and a chitosan-polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) porous matrix was synthesized and populated with human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hASCs) to be potentially used for wound dressing applications. By combining this membrane and porous matrix with the stem cells, we aimed to provide immunomodulation and differentiation capabilities for the wound environment, as well as mechanical strength and biocompatibility for the underlying tissue. The membrane was prepared from the mixture of chitosan and gelatin in a 2:1 ratio and the porous matrix was prepared from the mixture of chitosan and PHB, in equal proportions to form a final solution at 2.5% (m/v). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed the formation of blends, and micro-computed tomography, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images demonstrated membrane roughness and matrix porosity. The MTT assay showed that the scaffolds were biocompatible with hASC. The membrane and the bilayer were used as dressing and support for cell migration in the dorsal excisional wound model in Wistar rats. Histological and gene transcriptional analyses showed that the animals that received the scaffolds regenerated the hair follicles in the deep dermis in the central region of the wound. Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases worldwide and has been responsible for millions of deaths. However, developing a satisfactory smart multifunctional material combining different strategies to kill cancer cells poses a challenge. This work aims at filling this gap by developing a composite material for cancer treatment through hyperthermia and drug release. With this purpose, magnetic nanoparticles were coated with a polymer matrix consisting of poly (L-co-D,L lactic acid-co-trimethylene carbonate) and a poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction confirmed magnetite to be the only iron oxide in the sample. Cytotoxicity and heat release assays on the hybrid nanoparticles were performed here for the first time. The heat induction results indicate that these new magnetic hybrid nanoparticles are capable of increasing the temperature by more than 5 °C, the minimal temperature rise required for being effectively used in hyperthermia treatments. The biocompatibility assays conducted under different concentrations, in the presence and in the absence of an external alternating current magnetic field, did not reveal any cytotoxicity. Therefore, the overall results indicate that the investigated hybrid nanoparticles have a great potential to be used as carrier systems for cancer treatment by hyperthermia.

A geopolymer foam was synthesized for the evaluation of its capacity for fast retention and slow release of potassium in water. The base matrix of the geopolymer binder was obtained by mixing metakaolin, sodium silicate, and sodium hydroxide solutions. A factorial design of experiments (DOE) was applied to analyze the effect of adding hydrogen peroxide, aluminum powder, soybean oil, and iron ore flotation tailing on the water absorption and compressive strength of the geopolymer samples. The best-performing samples were characterized and evaluated for morphological aspects, chemical stability in different pH ranges, optimal adsorption time, and the ability to release potassium in the water. The inclusion of hydrogen peroxide was not a statistically significant factor at the 95% confidence level. The inclusion of aluminum powder and oil increased the water absorption, whereas the addition of tailing decreased it. The addition of soybean oil and tailing contributed positively to the compressive strength, but the addition of aluminum powder caused its reduction. The tailing addition not only increased the porous samples compressive strength but also prevented large cracks in their structure. The optimized response of 63 wt % of water absorption and 6 MPa of compressive strength was achieved by adding 0.05% of Al-powder, 1.5% of soybean oil, and 20% of tailing on the geopolymer binder. This sample exhibited 72% open porosity, a maximum adsorptive capacity of q = 5.7 mg/g, and chemical stability at pH > 4. Adsorption stabilized after 9 h of contact with water. Kinetics modeling suggested that the concentration gradient and chemical reactions probably drove potassium adsorption. The potassium release step was possibly controlled by the concentration gradient. This work presents Chameleon, a cloud computing (CC) Industry 4.0 (I4) neutron spectrum unfolding code. The code was designed under the Python programming language, using Streamlit framework®, and it is executed on the cloud, as I4 CC technology through internet, by using mobile devices with internet connectivity and a web navigator. In its first version, as a proof of concept, the SPUNIT algorithm was implemented. The main functionalities and the preliminary tests performed to validate the code are presented. Chameleon solves the neutron spectrum unfolding problem and it is easy, friendly and intuitive. It can be applied with success in various workplaces. More validation tests are in progress. Future implementations will include improving the graphical user interface, inserting other algorithms, such as GRAVEL, MAXED and neural networks, and implementing an algorithm to estimate uncertainties in the calculated integral quantities., (© The Author(s) 2023. Bonner Sphere Spectrometers (BSS) are widely used for neutron spectrometry. Spectra are obtained by unfolding detector readings. In this work, a Python Graphical User Interface Application (GUI/App) for spectrum unfolding is presented; SpecUnPy. In this App, the user can choose three unfolding algorithms: SPUNIT/MLEM/GRAVEL. There is no limit for energy bins or detectors and after unfolding, a ".xlsx" file and a graphical comparison can be downloaded. Aluminium (Al)-rich palaeosols-i.e., palaeobauxite deposits-should have formed in karst depressions in carbonate sequences as a result of acidic solutions from oxidative weathering of sulfide minerals during the Great Oxidation Event (GOE), but no GOE-related karst-palaeobauxite deposits have so far been recorded. Here, we report results of in situ uranium-lead (U-Pb) dating of detrital zircon and spatially associated rutile from a metamorphosed Al-rich rock within a dolomite sequence in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF) of Minas Gerais, Brazil, known as the Gandarela Formation. Rutile grains are highly enriched in thorium (Th = 3-46 ppm; Th/U ratio = 0.3-3.7) and yielded an isochron, lower-intercept age of ca. 2.12 Ga, which coincides with the final phase of the GOE-i.e., the Lomagundi event. The rutile age represents either authigenic growth of TiO 2 enriched in Th, U and Pb during bauxite formation, or subsequent rutile crystallisation during metamorphic overprint. Both cases require an authigenic origin for the rutile. Its high Th contents can be used as a palaeoenvironmental indicator for decreased soil pH during the GOE. Our results also have implications for iron (Fe)-ore genesis in the QF. In this work, an iron-rich residue, which is widely obtained as a by-product in the iron mining industry, and macauba endocarp, waste from the extraction of vegetable oil for the production of biofuels, were used in the preparation of different composites based on iron and carbon. The composites were obtained by manual grinding of the calcined iron residue and activated carbon prepared by the macauba endocarp followed by thermal treatment under nitrogen atmosphere. The effect of the thermal treatment was analyzed by Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction and showed that the increase in the treatment temperature promoted the formation of different reduced iron phases in the final composite, such as Fe 3 O 4 , FeO, and Fe 0 . These composites were used in a combined adsorption/oxidation process through photocatalysis to remove up to 93% of amoxicillin from aqueous phase. The formation of possible reaction intermediates was monitored by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and a mechanism of amoxicillin degradation was proposed. Afterward, the Fe/C composites were conducted to evaluate the impact of several parameters on phosphate adsorption processes and showed a maximum adsorption capacity of 40.3 mg g -1 . PET cyclotrons are widely used for producing medical diagnostic radionuclides. The main radionuclide produced in these facilities is the 18F, which is obtained from the [18O (p,n)18F] reaction when 18O-enriched water is bombarded with the proton beams. Maximum points of breast density have been strongly associated with breast cancer masking than global breast density, which is a widely used measure today. The objective of this work was to verify the correlation between two measures of global breast density (VBD GLOBAL and DAB GLOBAL ) and a measure of maximum point breast density (VBD MP ). Mammographic images of 4.020 patients were analyzed using the Volpara software, which calculated or extracted the variables needed for the study from the DICOM header. Two-tailed partial correlation tests were performed between the variable VBD GLOBAL with VBD MP and DAB GLOBAL with VBD MP in the following contexts: keeping PA and CBT constant, keeping only CBT constant, and keeping only PA constant. The Pearson test was also used to verify the bivariate correlation between VBD GLOBAL with VBD MP and DAB GLOBAL with VBD MP . For the two-tailed partial correlation tests between VBD GLOBAL with VBD MP , keeping the CBT and PA variables constant resulted in r = 0.845 (p < 0.05). When kept constant only the CBT, r = 0.875 (p < 0.05), and keeping only the PA constant r = 0.866 (p < 0.05). Pearson's test showed r = 0.883 (p < 0.05). For the two-tailed partial correlation tests between the DAB GLOBAL with VBD MP quantities, the results were r = 0.675 (p < 0.05), r = 0.725 (p < 0.05) and r = 0.701 (p < 0.05) for constant CBT and PA, constant CBT and constant PA, respectively, while the Pearson test resulted in r = 0.738 (p < 0.05). Individual monitoring can provide an estimate of the radioactivity present in the body of the exposed individuals. Periodic monitoring of occupationally exposed individuals is of great importance in case of accidental incorporation. Computational phantoms and Monte Carlo codes are often used to complement the calibration method of counting systems in internal dosimetry. Here, counting efficiency (CE) factors for a WBC system were calculated using MC simulations. The WBC system with a NaI(Tl) detector and the BOMAB phantom was modeled using three MC codes. After validation, the models were used to obtain CE values for a wide range of energies, and a CE curve was generated for the WBC system. To estimate the effects of anatomical differences on the measurement process, two anthropomorphic voxel phantoms were modeled using the VMC code. For the detector position with the highest CE value, the differences when comparing BOMAB results with the MaMP and Yale results were (-1 ± 6)% and (-1 ± 3)%, respectively. The results confirm that the use of the BOMAB phantom is a good approach for the calibration of the whole-body counter system. This research aimed to estimate the risk of cancer associated with patients without previous disease undergoing chest tomography. Siemens CT scanners have 6, 64, and 128 detectors. The Biologic Effects of Ionizing Radiation Reports - BEIR VII methodology was used. The study presented a sample of 64 patients aged between 18 and 80 years, in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais - Brazil. The IMPACT CT software and CalDose X CT Online were used to calculate the absorbed and equivalent dose from the Volumetric Computed Tomography Dose Index - CTDIvol (mGy) and Dose Length Product - DLP values provided by the equipment. CT-Expo Software was also used to estimate Specific Dose Estimates (SSDEs) values. The CTDvol results for the MG1, MG,2 and MG3 Diagnostic Centers in mGy were respectively 4.369 ± 1.352, 6.99 4 ± 1.53,3 and 9.984 ± 2.282 and the SSDE values were 3.800, 6.40,0 and 9,.500. The values for the equivalent dose, at the MG2 Diagnostic Center, by IMPACT CT, in (mSv) for the breasts, esophagus, heart, thyroid, lung and thymus were respectively 3.9, 5.7, 4.7, 1.0, 4.8 and 5.7. The CalDose Software, for the same equipment and the same organs, in mSv, estimated the values 7.4, 9.4, 11.1, 5.3, 10.8 and 11.3 for women and 7.1, 9.3, 11.0, 5.3, 10.2 and 10.9 for men. The estimated risk of cancer decreased according to the patient's age, but with a higher incidence for females. The use of each software must be carefully analyzed to avoid undue values due to the particularities of each one. People recovered from COVID-19 may still present complications including respiratory and neurological sequelae. In other viral infections, cognitive impairment occurs due to brain damage or dysfunction caused by vascular lesions and inflammatory processes. Persistent cognitive impairment compromises daily activities and psychosocial adaptation. Some level of neurological and psychiatric consequences were expected and described in severe cases of COVID-19. However, it is debatable whether neuropsychiatric complications are related to COVID-19 or to unfoldings from a severe infection. Nevertheless, the majority of cases recorded worldwide were mild to moderate self-limited illness in non-hospitalized people. Thus, it is important to understand what are the implications of mild COVID-19, which is the largest and understudied pool of COVID-19 cases. We aimed to investigate adults at least four months after recovering from mild COVID-19, which were assessed by neuropsychological, ocular and neurological tests, immune markers assay, and by structural MRI and 18 FDG-PET neuroimaging to shed light on putative brain changes and clinical correlations. In approximately one-quarter of mild-COVID-19 individuals, we detected a specific visuoconstructive deficit, which was associated with changes in molecular and structural brain imaging, and correlated with upregulation of peripheral immune markers. Our findings provide evidence of neuroinflammatory burden causing cognitive deficit, in an already large and growing fraction of the world population. While living with a multitude of mild COVID-19 cases, action is required for a more comprehensive assessment and follow-up of the cognitive impairment, allowing to better understand symptom persistence and the necessity of rehabilitation of the affected individuals., (© 2022. Industrial applications of nanomaterials require large-scale production methods, such as liquid phase exfoliation (LPE). Regarding this, it is imperative to characterize the obtained materials to tailor parameters such as exfoliation medium, duration, and mechanical energy source to the desired applications. This work presents results of statistical analyses of talc flakes obtained by LPE in four different media. Talc is a phyllosilicate that can be exfoliated into nanoflakes with great mechanical properties. Sodium cholate at two different concentrations (below and at the critical micelar concentration), butanone, and Triton-X100 were employed as exfoliation medium for talc. Using recent published statistical analysis methods based on atomic force microscopy images of thousands of flakes, the shape and size distribution of nanotalc obtained using the four different media are compared. This comparison highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the media tested and hopefully will facilitate the choice of the medium for applications that have specific requirements., (Copyright © 2023, Sousa et al.)

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a devastating livestock disease caused by foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), a member of the Picornaviridae family. The 3ABC is a non-structural protein of FMDV, produced during viral replication and absent from inactivated FMD vaccines. Nucleic acid aptamers are DNA or RNA oligonucleotides capable of binding with high specificity and affinity to a molecular target. The aim of this study was to obtain DNA aptamers specific for 3ABC protein with a view of their application in the FMD diagnosis. Aptamers are usually obtained through SELEX (Systematic Evolution of Ligands by EXponential enrichment) procedure. In this study, an aptamer (termed FMDV1) was selected by a variation of this technique called Capillary Electrophoresis SELEX (CE-SELEX). The FMDV1 aptamer showed high binding affinity to the 3ABC protein with Kd value in the nano molar range: 22.69 ± 1.79 nM. Background: Staphylococcus aureus is the most common bacteria found in skin, soft tissues, bone, and bone prostheses infections. The aim of this study was to select DNA aptamers for S. aureus to be applied in the diagnosis of bacteria., Methods and Results: We used SELEX (Systematic Evolution of Ligands by EXponencial Enrichment) for peptidoglycan followed by cell-SELEX with S. aureus cells as target. Four sequences showed significantly higher binding to S. aureus distinguishing it from the control cells of other significant microbial species: Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus pneumoniae. In particular, ApSA1 (Kd = 62.7 ± 5.6 nM) and ApSA3 (Kd = 43.3 ± 3.0 nM) sequences combined high affinity and specificity for S. aureus, considering all microorganisms tested., Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that these aptamers were able to identify peptidoglycan in the S. aureus surface and have great potential for use in the development of radiopharmaceuticals capable to identify S. aureus infectious foci, as well as in other aptamer-based methodologies for bacteria diagnosis., (© 2022. Vectorized small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) are widely used to induce gene silencing. Among the delivery systems used, lipid-based particles are the most effective. Our objective was the development of novel lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles, from lipoplexes (complexes of cationic lipid and siRNAs), and poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), using a simple modified nanoprecipitation method. Due to their morphology, we called these hybrid nanoparticles Spheroplexes. We elucidated their structure using several physico-chemical techniques and showed that they are composed of a hydrophobic PLGA matrix, surrounded by a lipid envelope adopting a lamellar structure, in which the siRNA is complexed, and they retain surface characteristics identical to the starting nanoparticles, i.e. lipoplexes siRNA. We analyzed the composition of the particle population and determined the final percentage of spheroplexes within this population, 80 to 85% depending on the preparation conditions, using fluorescent markers and the ability of flow cytometry to detect nanometric particles (approximately 200 nm). Finally, we showed that spheroplexes are very stable particles and more efficient than siRNA lipoplexes for the delivery of siRNA to cultured cells. We administered spheroplexes contain siRNAs targeting TNF-α to mice with ulcerative colitis induced by dextran sulfate and our results indicate a disease regression effect with a response probably mediated by their uptake by macrophages / monocytes at the level of lamina propria of the colon. The efficacy of decreased level of TNF-α in vivo seemed to be an association of spheroplexes polymer-lipid composition and the specific siRNA. Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne virus that is phylogenetically close to other medically important flaviviruses with high global public health significance, such as dengue (DENV) and yellow fever (YFV) viruses. Correct diagnosis of a flavivirus infection can be challenging, particularly in world regions where more than one flavivirus co-circulates and YFV vaccination is mandatory. Acid nucleic aptamers are oligonucleotides that bind to a specific target molecule with high affinity and specificity. Because of their unique characteristics, aptamers are promising tools for biosensor development. Aptamers are usually obtained through a procedure called "systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment" (SELEX). In this study, we select an aptamer (termed ZIKV60) by capillary electrophoresis SELEX (CE-SELEX) to the Zika virus non-structural protein 1 (NS1) and counterselection against the NS1 proteins of DENV (serotypes 1, 2, 3, and 4) and YFV. The ZIKV60 dissociation constant ( K d ) is determined by enzyme-linked oligonucleotide assay (ELONA) and the aptamer specificity is evaluated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. ZIKV60 shows a high binding affinity to the ZIKV NS1 protein with a K d value of 2.28 ± 0.28 nM. The aptamer presents high specificity for ZIKV NS1 compared to NS1 of DENV and YFV. Furthermore, graphene field-effect transistor devices functionalized with ZIKV60 exhibit an evident identification of NS1 protein diluted in human serum. This work establishes local diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) in interventional radiology based on adult patient body mass index (BMI). The monitoring was carried out from 23 institutions and patient data from 3015 procedures were collected, being 907 Catheterism (CAT), 921 Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and 1187 CAT/PTCA and 6 BMI ranges were taken, going from under 18 up to 40 kg·m-2. It is presented that 18 initial DRL values to be used in the county of Minas Gerais. The overall 75th kerma-area product (KAP), commonly considered DRL, in Gy·cm2, is 94.6(SD 119)-CAT, 88.6(SD 121)-PTCA and 33.0(SD 47.6)-CAT/PTCA. In considering KAP-BMI individual values, one obtain the min-max ranges, in Gy·cm2, 3.2-BMI A to 101-BMI B for CAT, 65-BMI A to 102-BMI F for PTCA and 10.4-BMI A to 59.2-BMI E for CAT/PTCA. Breast cancer is the most common cancer that affects women globally and is among the leading cause of women's death. Triple-negative breast cancer is more difficult to treat because hormone therapy is not available for this subset of cancer. The well-established therapy against triple-negative breast cancer is mainly based on surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. Among the drugs used in the therapy are cisplatin and carboplatin. However, they cause severe toxicity to the kidneys and brain and cause nausea. Therefore, it is urgent to propose new chemotherapy techniques that provide new treatment options to patients affected by this disease. Nowadays, peptide drugs are emerging as a class of promising new anticancer agents due to their lytic nature and, apparently, a minor drug resistance compared to other conventional drugs (reviewed in Jafari et al., 2022). We have recently reported the cytotoxic effect of the antimicrobial peptide LyeTx I-b against glioblastoma cells (Abdel-Salam et al., 2019). In this research, we demonstrated the cytotoxic effect of the peptide LyeTx I-b, alone and combined with cisplatin, against triple-negative cell lines (MDA-MD-231). LyeTx-I-b showed a selectivity index 70-fold higher than cisplatin. The peptide:cisplatin combination (P:C) 1:1 presented a synergistic effect on the cell death and a selective index value 16 times greater than the cisplatin alone treatment. Therefore, an equi-effective reduction of cisplatin can be reached in the presence of LyeTx I-b. Cells treated with P:C combinations were arrested in the G2/M cell cycle phase and showed positive staining for acridine orange, which was inhibited by bafilomycin A1, indicating autophagic cell death (ACD) as a probable cell death mechanism. Furthermore, Western blot experiments indicated a decrease in P21 expression and AKT phosphorylation. The decrease in AKT phosphorylation is indicative of ACD. However, other studies are still necessary to better elucidate the pathways involved in the cell death mechanism induced by the peptide and the drug combinations. These findings confirmed that the peptide LyeTx I-b seems to be a good candidate for combined chemotherapy to treat breast cancer. The genotoxicity of pyrene-polyethylene glycol-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-PyPEG), engineered as a nanoplatform for bioapplication, was evaluated. Toxicity was assessed in hamster lung fibroblast cells (V79-4). MTT and Cell Titer Blue methods were used to evaluate cell viability. Genotoxicity was measured by the comet assay and the cytokinesis-block micronucleus cytome (CBMN-Cyt) assay, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was used to test induction of structural chromosome aberrations (clastogenic activity) and/or numerical chromosome changes (aneuploidogenic activity). Exogenous metabolic activation enzymes were used in the CBMN-Cyt and FISH tests. Gold nanoparticles have been widely investigated for biomedical applications due to their optical properties. These particles present the interesting feature of absorbing light when stimulated with laser radiation to generate heating. Among the possible morphologies for synthetic gold nanoparticles, gold nanorods have properties of great interest for applications in the photohyperthermia processes. Due to their morphology, gold nanorods can absorb light at longer wavelengths comprising specific regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as the region of the biological window, in which laser radiation has less interaction with tissues. However, these nanoparticles present limitations in biomedical applications, such as low colloidal and thermal stabilities that can be overcome by coating the gold nanorods with silica MCM-41. The silicate covering can provide greater stability for gold nanorods and allow multifunctionality in treating different diseases through photohyperthermia. This work developed a specific chemical route through seed and growth solutions to synthesize gold nanorods with controlled particle size, rod morphology, and silica covering for photohyperthermia applications. The synthesized samples were characterized through a multi-technique approach that successfully demonstrated the presence of gold nanorods inside the silica coating, presenting high stability and desirable textural and morphological characteristics for bioapplications. Furthermore, silica-coated gold nanorods exhibit high biocompatibility and great performance in generating therapeutic heating by absorbing laser radiation in the biological window range, making the system developed in this work a promising agent in photohyperthermia., (© 2021 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Purpose: The present study aimed at testing a new formulation of mesalazine linked to chondroitin sulfate and its components alone in the treatment of actinic proctitis in rats., Methods: Forty-seven female Wistar rats were submitted to pelvic radiation and divided into eight groups: control A, mesalazine A, chondroitin A, and conjugate A, gavage of the according substance two weeks after irradiation and sacrifice three weeks after oral treatment; control C, mesalazine C, chondroitin C, and conjugate C, sacrifice six weeks after oral treatment. The rectum was submitted to histological characterization for each of the findings: inflammatory infiltrate, epithelial degeneration, mucosal necrosis, and fibrosis., Results: The inflammatory infiltrate was more intense in chondroitin A, mesalazine A, and conjugate C. The collagen deposition was less intense in chondroitin A, and mesalazine A, and more intense in control C., Conclusions: Mesalazine and chondroitin alone were efficacious in inducing a delayed inflammatory response, hence reducing the late fibrosis. The conjugate was able to induce an ever more delayed inflammatory response.

The detailed study of graphene oxide (GO) synthesis by changing the graphite/oxidizing reagents mass ratios (mG/mROxi), provided GO nanosheets production with good yield, structural quality, and process savings. Three initial samples containing different amounts of graphite (3.0 g, 4.5 g, and 6.0 g) were produced using a bench reactor under strictly controlled conditions to guarantee the process reproducibility. The produced samples were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), x-ray diffraction (XDR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetry (TGA) techniques. The results showed that the major GO product comprised of nanosheets containing between 1-5 layers, with lateral size up to 1.8 µm. Therefore, it was possible to produce different batches of graphene oxide with desirable physicochemical characteristics, keeping the amount of oxidizing reagent unchanged. The use of different proportions (mG/mROxi) is an important strategy that provides to produce GO nanostructures with high structural quality and scale-up, which can be well adapted in medium-sized bench reactor.

Cosmogenic 7 Be was used to evaluate soil loss in a mountainous micro-watershed near Belo Horizonte, Southwest Brazil. Two nearby sites were selected, a reference site in a flat area and an eroded site in a hill slope. At the reference site, soil samples were collected monthly throughout the year in order to evaluate seasonal variations of 7 Be inventory in soil and its relation with the precipitation regime. Additionally, rainwater was collected and the expected 7 Be soil content was predicted. At the reference site, the 7 Be inventory shows seasonal variations, in accordance with the rainy season, and its distribution in the soil profile shows an exponential decrease in depth ( h 0  = 6.9 ± 0.6 kg m -2 ; r 2  = 0.97). At the eroded site, two soil sampling campaigns were performed in order to measure soil erosion in the watershed. The estimated net erosion was 42.2 ± 3.7 t ha -1 , indicating the loss of upper 5mm of soil per year. This corresponds to soil losses in the area in the range from moderate to severe erosion.

Background and Objectives: Eye diseases have a high socioeconomic impact on society and may be one of the fields in which most stem cell-related scientific accomplishments have been achieved recently. In this context, human Pluripotent Stem Cell (hPSC) technology arises as an important tool to produce and study human Embryonic Stem cell derived-Retinal Pigmented Epithelial Cells (hES-RPE) for several applications, such as cell therapy, disease modeling, and drug screening. The use of this technology in pre-clinical phases attends to the overall population desire for animal-free product development. Here, we aimed to compare hES-RPE cells with ARPE-19, one of the most commonly used retinal pigmented epithelial immortalized cell lines., Methods and Results: Functional, cellular and molecular data obtained suggest that hES-RPE cells more closely resembles native RPEs compared to ARPE-19. Furthermore, hES-RPE revealed an interesting robustness when cultured on human Bruch's membrane explants and after exposure to Cyclosporine (CSA), Sirolimus (SRL), Tacrolimus (TAC), Leflunomide (LEF) and Teriflunomide (TER). On these conditions, hES-RPE cells were able to survive at higher drug concentrations, while ARPE-19 cell line was more susceptible to cell death., Conclusions: Therefore, hES-RPEs seem to have the ability to incur a broader range of RPE functions than ARPE-19 and should be more thoroughly explored for drug screening.

The layered mineral tilkerodeite (Pd 2 HgSe 3 ), the palladium analogue of jacutingaite (Pt 2 HgSe 3 ), is a promising quantum spin hall insulator for low-power nanospintronics. In this context, a fast and reliable assessment of its structure is key for exploring fundamental properties and architecture of new Pd 2 HgSe 3 -based devices. Here, we investigate the first-order Raman spectrum in high-quality, single-crystal bulk tilkerodeite, and analyze the wavenumber relation to its isostructural jacutingaite analogue. By using polarized Raman spectroscopy, symmetry analysis, and first-principles calculations, we assigned all the Raman-active phonons in tilkerodeite, unveiling their wavenumbers, atomic displacement patterns, and symmetries. Our calculations used several exchange-correlation functionals within the density functional perturbation theory framework, reproducing both structure and Raman-active phonon wavenumbers in excellent agreement with experiments. Also, it was found that the influence of the spin-orbit coupling can be neglected in the study of these properties. Finally, we compared the wavenumber and atomic displacement patterns of corresponding Raman-active modes in tilkerodeite and jacutingaite, and found that the effect of the Pd and Pt masses can be neglected on reasoning their wavenumber differences. From this analysis, tilkerodeite is found to be mechanically weaker than jacutingaite against the atomic displacement patterns of these modes. Our findings advance the understanding of the structural properties of a recently discovered layered topological insulator, fundamental to further exploring its electronic, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties, and for device fabrication.

The use of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) is growing in different technological fields, raising concern on their potential impacts on the environment. Given its diverse nanothenological applications, graphene oxide (GO) stands out among the most widely used CNMs. Its hydrophilic capacity enables it to remain stable in suspension in water allowing that GO can be accessible for accumulation by aquatic organisms through ingestion, filtration and superficial dermal contact when present in aquatic ecosystems. Considering that the effects induced to aquatic organisms may depend on environment characteristics, such as temperature, salinity, water pH as well as the presence/absence of sediment, the present study aimed to investigate the influence of sediment on the impacts caused by GO exposure. For this, oxidative stress parameters were measured in the clam Ruditapes philippinarum, exposed to different GO concentrations (0.01, 0.1 and 1 mg/L), in the presence and absence of sediment, for a 28-days experimental period. The results here presented showed that regardless the presence or absence of sediment, most of the biochemical parameters considered were altered when clams were exposed to the highest concentration. The present findings further revealed that in the presence of sediment, clams mostly invested in non-enzymatic defenses (such as reduced glutathione, GSH), while animals exposed to GO in the absence of sediment favored their enzymatic antioxidant defense capacity (catalase, CAT and superoxide dismutase, SOD). Magnetite nanoparticles are one of the most promising ferrofluids for hyperthermia applications due to the combination of unique physicochemical and magnetic properties. In this study, we designed and produced superparamagnetic ferrofluids composed of magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 , MION) and cobalt-doped magnetite (Co x -MION, x = 3, 5, and 10% mol of cobalt) nanoconjugates through an eco-friendly aqueous method using carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) as the biocompatible macromolecular ligand. The effect of the gradual increase of cobalt content in Fe 3 O 4 nanocolloids was investigated in-depth using XRD, XRF, XPS, FTIR, DLS, zeta potential, EMR, and VSM analyses. Additionally, the cytotoxicity of these nanoconjugates and their ability to cause cancer cell death through heat induction were evaluated by MTT assays in vitro . The results demonstrated that the progressive substitution of Co in the magnetite host material significantly affected the magnetic anisotropy properties of the ferrofluids. Therefore, Co-doped ferrite (Co x Fe (3- x ) O 4 ) nanoconjugates enhanced the cell-killing activities in magnetic hyperthermia experiments under alternating magnetic field performed with human brain cancer cells (U87). On the other hand, the Co-doping process retained the pristine inverse spinel crystalline structure of MIONs, and it has not significantly altered the average nanoparticle size ( ca. ∼7.1 ± 1.6 nm). The effects of low energy electrons in biological tissues have proved to lead to severe damages at the cellular and sub-cellular level. It is due to an increase in the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of these electrons with a decrease in their penetration range. That is, lower the range higher will be its RBE.Therefore, accurate determination of low energy electron range becomes a key issue for radiation dosimetry. This work reports on in-water electron tracks evaluated at low kinetic energy (1-50 keV) using isotropic mono-energetic point source approach suitably implemented by different general-purpose Monte Carlo codes. For this aim, simulations were performed using PENELOPE, EGSnrc, MCNP6, FLUKA and Geant4-DNA Monte Carlo codes to obtain the particle range, R,R 90 ,R 50 . Finally, evaluation of dose point kernel (DPK), as used for internal dosimetry, was carried out as an application example. Scaled dose point kernels (sDPK) were estimated for a range of mono-energetic low energy electron sources. The non-negligible differences among the calculated sDPK using different codes were obtained for energy electrons up to 5 keV. It was also observed that differences of in-water range for low-energy electrons, due to the different general-purpose Monte Carlo codes, affected the DPKs used for dosimetry by convolution approach. Finally, the 3D dosimetry was found to be almost not affected at macroscopic clinical scale, whereas non-negligible differences appeared at the microscopic level. Gliclazide is a sulfonylurea frequently prescribed for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in elderly patients and for patients with chronic renal or hepatic diseases. Even though it is considered a safer alternative, the drug can provoke side effects in some patients, especially hypoglycemia, due to the high interindividual variability. Therefore, the quantification of gliclazide in biological samples is usually recommended in order to assure efficacy and safety of the pharmacotherapy. However, due to the complexity of biological matrices, therapeutic monitoring can be very challenging, especially in the sample preparation step. For that reason, the synthesis and characterization of a novel and selective molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was proposed to be employed as sorbent for the extraction of gliclazide from human plasma samples by a molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) procedure. Synthesis conditions were optimized (monomer, crosslinker and porogen) and the polymer was characterized for its morphological, physicochemical and stability properties. The influence of drug concentration, solvent composition and pH on the coefficient of distribution (K d ) and imprinting factor (IF) were studied, as well as repeatability between batches and selectivity. A bioanalytical method was developed applying the developed MIP as sorbent in solid phase extraction and liquid chromatography using a Poroshell 120 C18 (100 × 4.6 mm, 4 μm) column, acetonitrile and 10 mM potassium phosphate buffer pH 3.0 (50:50) at a flow-rate of 1.2 mL/min as mobile phase, temperature of 30 °C, injection volume of 40 μL and detection at 230 nm. The best reaction yield, extraction capacity, and selectivity was obtained using 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA), ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and acetonitrile. The optimized MIP showed coefficient of distribution (K d ) of 59.85 μg/g, imprinting factor (IF) of 1.60, and selectivity for gliclazide and other sulfonylureas compared to possible concurrent drugs. Carbon nanomaterials (CNM), such as graphene oxide (GO), have been the focus of study in several areas of science mostly due to their physical-chemical properties. However, data concerning the potential toxic effects of these CNM in bivalves are still scarce. When present in the aquatic systems, the combination with other contaminants, as well as pH environmental variations, can influence the behavior of these nanomaterials and, consequently, their toxicity. Thus, the main goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of exposure of clam Ruditapes philippinarum to GO when acting alone and in the combination with copper (Cu), under two pH levels (control 7.8 and 7.3). A 28-day exposure was performed and metabolism and oxidative stress-related parameters were evaluated. The effects caused by GO and Cu exposures, either isolated or co-exposed, showed a direct and dependent relationship with the pH in which the organisms were exposed. In clams maintained at control pH (7.8), Cu and GO + Cu treatments showed lower lipid peroxidation (LPO) and lower electron transport system (ETS) activity, respectively. In clams maintained at low pH, glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) activities were increased in Cu and Cu + GO treatments, whereas reduced glutathione (GSH) levels were increased in Cu treatment and ETS activity was higher in GO + Cu. Thus, it can be observed that clams responses to Cu and GO were strongly modulated by pH in terms of their defense system and energy production, although this does not result into higher LPO levels.

Arsenic (As) is one of the most widespread contaminants; it is found in almost every environment. Its toxic effects on living organisms have been studied for decades, but the interaction of this metalloid with other contaminants is still relatively unknown, mainly whether this interaction occurs with emerging contaminants such as nanomaterials. To examine this relationship, the marine shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei was exposed for 48 h to As, graphene oxide (GO; two different concentrations) or a combination of both, and gills, hepatopancreas and muscle tissues were sampled. Glutathione S-transferase (GST)-omega gene expression and activity were assessed. As accumulation and speciation (metabolisation capacity) were also examined. Finally, a molecular docking simulation was performed to verify the possible interaction between the nanomaterial and GST-omega. The main finding was that GO modulated the As toxic effect: it decreased GST-omega activity, a consequence related to altered As accumulation and metabolism. The specific uptake of 99m Tc radiolabeled Staphylococcus aureus aptamers in the infectious foci was evaluated by scintigraphic imaging of infection-bearing mice. The radiotracer uptake was inhibited by non-radiolabeled aptamers in a competition assay. In addition, when a different number of bacterial cells was used to infect mice an increase in the target/non-target ratios of images correlated with the increase of CFU per gram of tissue was verified. Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) have been growing in notoriety in the development of systems aiming bioapplications. In this work we conducted an investigation about the mechanisms involved in the incorporation of samarium and gadolinium in BNNTs. The process was performed by the reduction of samarium and gadolinium oxides (Sm 2 O 3 and Gd 2 O 3 , respectively) in the presence of NH 3 gas (witch decomposes into N 2 and H 2 ) at high temperatures. Various characterization techniques were conducted to elucidate how Sm and Gd are introduced into the BNNT structure. Biological in vitro assays were performed with human fibroblasts and a human osteosarcoma cell line (SAOS-2). In this work, we present a coupled experimental and theoretical first-principles investigation on one of the more promising oxide-diluted magnetic semiconductors, the Sn 1-x Co x O 2 nanoparticle system, in order to see the effect of cobalt doping on the physical and chemical properties. Our findings suggest that progressive surface enrichment with dopant ions plays an essential role in the monotonous quenching of the surface disorder modes. That weakening is associated with the passivation of the oxygen vacancies as the Co excess at the surface becomes larger. Room-temperature 119 Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy data analysis revealed the occurrence of a distribution of isomer shifts, related to the different non-equivalent surroundings of Sn 4+ ions and the coexistence of Sn 2+ /Sn 4+ at the particle surfaces provoked by the inhomogeneous distribution of Co ions, in agreement with the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. Magnetic measurements revealed a paramagnetic behavior of the Co ions dispersed in the rutile-type matrix with antiferromagnetic correlations, which become stronger as the Co content is increased. Theoretical calculations show that a defect with two Co mediated by a nearby oxygen vacancy is the most likely defect. The predicted effects of this defect complex are in accordance with the experimental results.
