This work makes an attempt to explain the self-sustained thermally-induced oscillations of a two-phase system consisting of an isolated confined liquid–vapour meniscus (a single liquid plug adjoining a vapour bubble) inside a circular capillary tube, the tube length being exposed to a net temperature gradient, thereby creating a continuous cycle of evaporation and condensation. This system represents the simplest ‘unit-cell’ version of a Pulsating Heat Pipe (PHP). The fundamental understanding of its transport behavior leading to self-sustained oscillations is vital for building the hitherto non-existent mathematical models of the complete PHP system. First, visualization of the oscillations of the unit-cell has been done under controlled thermal boundary conditions. Here, a unique and novel understanding of the system dynamics has been achieved by real-time synchronization of the internal pressure measurement with high-speed videography that was used to visualize and record the meniscus oscillations and the thin liquid film that is laid on the wall when the meniscus leaves the evaporator. A numerical model was developed for the system consisting of a vapour plug and a liquid slug oscillating in a tube closed at one end and connected to a reservoir at a constant pressure at the other end. The modeling principle had been posed in previous work. Some modifications were never the less introduced in this work to take into account the peculiarities of the new experimental set-up and to improve the liquid film evaporation model in the light of the experimental results. Also a parametric study was carried out to understand the implications of the various factors on the working of such system., Ce travail fait une tentative pour expliquer les oscillations induites thermiquement auto-entretenue d'un système à deux phases constitué d'un liquide-vapeur confinée ménisque isolé (un bouchon de liquide unique attenant à une bulle de vapeur) à l'intérieur d'un tube capillaire circulaire, la longueur du tube être exposé à un gradient de température net, créant ainsi un cycle continu de l'évaporation et la condensation. Ce système représente la simple « unité-cellule" version d'un caloduc oscillant (PHP). La compréhension fondamentale de son comportement de transport menant à oscillations auto-soutenue est essentielle pour la construction des modèles mathématiques jusque-là inexistants du système PHP complet. Tout d'abord, la visualisation des oscillations de l'unité de cellules a été effectuée dans des conditions aux limites thermiques contrôlées. Ici, une compréhension nouvelle et unique de la dynamique du système a été atteint par une synchronisation en temps réel de la mesure de pression interne avec la vidéographie haute vitesse qui a été utilisé pour visualiser et enregistrer les oscillations du ménisque et le mince film de liquide qui est mis sur le mur lorsque le ménisque quitte l'évaporateur. Un modèle numérique a été développé pour le système constitué par un bouchon de vapeur et un bouchon de liquide oscillant dans un tube fermé à une extrémité et relié à un réservoir à une pression constante à l'autre extrémité. Le principe de modélisation avait été posé lors de travaux antérieurs. Quelques modifications ont été jamais moins introduites dans ce travail pour prendre en compte les particularités de la nouvelle expérimental et pour améliorer le liquide modèle film de l'évaporation à la lumière des résultats expérimentaux. Une étude paramétrique a également été réalisée pour comprendre les implications des différents facteurs sur le fonctionnement d'un tel système.

Two techniques to characterize the thermal properties of materials and to analyze the heat transfer at the micro/nanoscales have been studied and are presented in this manuscript. The first technique is an Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)-based Scanning Thermal Microscopy (SThM) technique. Operating in its active mode, the AFM probe integrates a resistive element that is electrically heated. Used in AFM contact mode, it allows the localized thermal excitation of the material to be studied. The determination of the sample thermal properties requires the analysis of the probe thermal response through the modeling of the probe-sample system including its surrounding. Through a state of the art of the SThM studies, the current scientific questions and the analytical models used to analyze the probe-sample system are exposed. Special attention is given to the probe-sample thermal interaction that conditions the tip-sample interface temperature. In this work, a new methodology based on the analysis of the dependence of force-distance curves on probe temperature obtained in ambient air has been established. It permits the study and the specification of the heat rate exchanged between probe and sample through thermal conduction through water meniscus. The methodology has been applied with samples with different thermal properties, surface roughness and wettability to three resistive probes different in size and heater configurations: Wollaston, KNT and doped silicon (DS) probes. Whatever the probe and the sample are, the contribution of water meniscus in the probe-sample interaction has been shown to be lower than the one through air. The thermal conductances at the solid-solid contact were determined for various samples. This allowed identifying the phonon transmission coefficient in the case of KNT probe and a nonmetallic sample. The heat conduction through air strongly depends on the sample thermal conductivity. Moreover, the sensitivity to sample thermal conductivity for the Wollaston and KNT probes is shown to be strongly reduced for thermal conductivities larger than 10 and few W.m-1.K-1 respectively. The second technique developed in this thesis is a less local thermal analysis method. It operates by contact, requiring the implementation of the sample with a network of resistive wire probes. One wire of the network is heated by an alternating current at frequency f and has the role of heating source, continuous and at 2f frequency, for the sample. A 2D analytical model, based on the principle of thermal-waves, was developed to identify though the measurements the effective thermal properties of anisotropic samples. Finite element simulations and this model were used to design the experimental set-up and validate the method on a sample of pure silicon. The results obtained at sample temperatures ranging from ambient to 500 K are consistent with literature., Deux techniques de caractérisation thermique des matériaux et d’analyse du transfert de chaleur aux micro- et nano- échelles ont été étudiées et sont présentées dans ce mémoire. La première technique est la microscopie thermique à sonde locale (SThM). La pointe d’un microscope à force atomique intègre un élément résistif. Utilisée en mode contact, cette pointe, chauffée par effet joule, permet l'excitation thermique localisée de l’échantillon. La détermination des propriétés thermiques de l’échantillon nécessite l'analyse de la réponse de cette pointe avec un modèle du système sonde-échantillon et de son environnement. Un état de l'art général des études réalisées en SThM permet de poser les questions scientifiques actuellement traitées dans le domaine. Une attention particulière est accordée à l'interaction thermique sonde-échantillon. L’étude ici présentée tient compte des propriétés thermiques, de la rugosité et de la mouillabilité de la surface de différents échantillons. Une nouvelle méthodologie est établie pour la spécification du transfert de chaleur échangée par conduction thermique au travers du ménisque de l'eau formé au contact sonde-échantillon. Cette méthodologie est basée sur l'analyse de la dépendance à la température de la sonde des courbes de force-distance obtenues à l'air ambiant. Elle est appliquée à trois sondes de taille, forme et constitution différentes: la sonde Wollaston, la sonde KNT et une sonde en silicium dopé. Quels que soient la sonde et l'échantillon, la contribution du ménisque d’eau à l'interaction est montrée être inférieure à celle de l'air. La conductance thermique au contact solide-solide est déterminée pour différents échantillons. Cela a permis d’identifier le coefficient de transmission de phonons dans le cas de la sonde KNT et des échantillons non-métalliques. La conduction thermique via l’air dépend fortement de la conductivité thermique de l'échantillon. La sensibilité à la conductivité thermique pour les sondes Wollaston et KNT est part ailleurs montrée fortement réduite pour les matériaux de conductivité thermique supérieure à 10 et quelques W.m-1.K-1 respectivement. La seconde technique développée est une méthode d’analyse thermique moins locale nécessitant l’instrumentation de la surface de l’échantillon avec un réseau de sondes résistives filiformes. L’un des fils du réseau, chauffé par un courant alternatif à la fréquence f, a le rôle de source excitatrice continue et à la fréquence 2f de l’échantillon. Un modèle analytique 2D, basé sur le principe des ondes thermiques et développé pour identifier les propriétés thermiques d’échantillons anisotropes est présenté. Des simulations par éléments finis et avec ce modèle ont été utilisées pour dimensionner le montage expérimental et valider la méthode sur un échantillon de silicium pur. Les résultats obtenus à des températures de l’échantillon variant de l’ambiante à 500 K corroborent ceux de la littérature.

Recent experimental studies have shown that the usual values ​​of the convective heat transfer coefficient h are no longer valid in the presence of phase change materials. Three separate models were developed. Initially a model 1 which treats the fluid-wall (constant temperature) interaction in steady laminar flow has been developed and validated. Then, the wall with heat capacity (model 2) subjected to an air temperature ramp were studied. Finally, a third model (3) has been developed which treats the interaction fluid-wall which contains a phase change material. The results show local peaks of heat flow over time. This fact reflects the phase change inside the wall. Moreover, the curves of the convective heat transfer coefficient indicate the dependence of the coefficient h to the wall’s energy storage capacity. Therefore, the presence of the phase change materials within a wall effect and changes the shape of the thermal boundary layer., De récentes études expérimentales ont montré que les valeurs usuelles du coefficient d’échange convectif sont différentes en présence de matériaux à changement de phase. Cette thèse de doctorat porte sur l'étude numérique des échanges convectifs fluide/paroi dans une cavité ouverte en régime dynamique. Plus précisément, les parois étudiées sont une paroi avec une capacité thermique et une paroi qui contient des matériaux à changement de phase. Trois modèles distincts ont été développés. Dans un premier temps un modèle (modèle 1) qui concerne l’interaction fluide-paroi à la surface d’une paroi résistive (temperature imposée) en régime laminaire stationnaire a été développé et validé. Les résultats ont été confrontés avec la littérature. Ensuite, les échanges convectifs à la surface d’une plaque capacitive (modèle 2) soumise à une rampe de température d’air ont été étudiés. Finalement, un troisième modèle (modèle 3) a été développé, à la suite du modèle 2. Ce dernier modèle concerne l’interaction fluide-paroi à la surface d’une paroi contenant des matériaux à changement de phase en régime dynamique. Les résultats obtenus révèlent des pics locaux du flux de chaleur au cours du temps. Ce fait témoigne du changement d’état à l’intérieur de la paroi qui contient le materiau à changement de phase. De plus, les courbes des coefficients d’échanges convectifs moyens révèlent la dépendance du coefficient d’echange convectif à la capacité thermique du materiau. Par conséquent, la présence des matériaux à changement de phase à l’intérieur d'une paroi influence l’évolution et la forme de la couche limite thermique.

Low energy building constructions become sensitive to internal gains : any internal heating source has an impact on the envelope. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the performance of current transient thermal models when adapted to low energy buildings. This work describes a numerical model to simulate a single room, using a refined spatial three-dimensional description of heat conduction in the envelope but a single air node is considered. The model has been developed for environmental conditions that vary over short time-steps and has integrated the projection of solar radiation through a window onto interior walls : the sun patch. The validation of the model has been done through a detailed comparison between model and measurements. The in situ experiment has been carried out in one of the BESTlab cells (EDF R&D). The sun patch has been followed by a camera to validate its calculated position and surface. Temperature measurements by thermocouples and by thermal cameras have been compared to the models outputs. Differences between air and surface temperatures measured and simulated were never above 1.5 ˚C and mean errors reached 0.5 ˚C. The two innovations of the model have then be proven. Using minute wise weather data and inputs associated to an adaptative solver, enabled to pull down simulation errors : in May maximal differences rised from 1 ˚C to 2 ˚C for respectivelly one minute and hourly wise inputs. More important errors are seen in summer whereas in winter, air temperatures simulated tend to more fluctuate around the set up temperature when the sampling step gets longer. Two one dimensional models, close to traditional taken simulation tools, were used. Model M 1D,sol supposed the incoming radiation to reach only the floor. A 1D model with sun patch movement, called 1D,parois , was also used. These two models evaluated the air temperature with an acceptable error. However, their surface temperatures were still subject to important errors. Thus, for temperature surfaces evaluation, both 1D model presented differences up to 20 ˚C for surfaces touched by the sun patch. In winter, the 3D model can predict heating energy consumptions overestimated by 6.5 % when M 1D,parois overestimated them by 11 % and M1D,sol by 22 %. The improvements brought by our model have been proven also for other cells with different thermal masses. For these cells, differences between M1D,sol and the 3D model could reach 4.5 ˚C. Differences seemed to be more important for low thermal mass cells, and the orientation of the building had a strong impact. This work has confirmed the necessity of representing more accuratelly the descriptions of the enveloppe for strongly insulated rooms. To improve the model, the anisothermal hypotheses of the air should be considered., Cette thèse s’inscrit dans le contexte du développement de Bâtiments Basse Consommation. La conception de telles constructions les rend sensibles aux sollicitations internes. Aussi, les outils de thermique du bâtiment existants ne sont pas adaptés pour simuler assez fidèlement ce type de bâtiments, si bien qu’un modèle tridimensionnel et dynamique a été développé ici. Celui-ci présente plusieurs particularités : il s’appuie sur une discrétisation spatiale optimisée des parois, la tache solaire y est localisée et l’intégration des dynamiques des conditions environnementales est assurée par un solveur numérique à pas de temps adaptatif et un seul nœud d’air est considéré. La validation du modèle s’est suivant une confrontation avec des mesures en conditions réelles réalisées dans une cellule de BESTlab d’EDF R&D. Un suivi visuel de la tache solaire a permis de confirmer sa bonne localisation par notre modèle. Des mesures de température en surface complétées par des cartographies thermographiques ont été comparées aux champs de températures simulés, montrant une bonne concordance. Les comparaisons de températures d’air mesurées et simulées ont montré des résidus ne dépassant pas 1,5 ˚C, pour des erreurs moyennes de 0,5 ˚C. La pertinence des deux principales innovations du modèle a été ensuite démontrée : l’utilisation d’entrées échantillonnées à la minute associées à un solveur à pas de temps adaptatif permet de minimiser les erreurs de simulation : en mi-saison, les résidus maximaux sont respectivement de 1 ˚C et 2 ˚C pour des entrées à la minute et à l’heure. En hiver, les températures d’air simulées tendent à plus osciller autour de la consigne quand le pas d’échantillonnage des entrées s’allonge. Deux modèles unidimensionnels, représentatifs de modèles courants, M1D,sol diluant le rayonnement solaire sur le sol seul et M1D,parois le distribuant de façon homogène sur les parois au prorata de la taille de la tache solaire censée les frappées, ne dégradent que légèrement la précision des calculs de température d’air. Cependant, ces modèles 1D ne permettent pas de calcul des champs de températures sur les parois si bien qu’ils présentent des erreurs locales dépassant 20 ˚C aux endroits touchés par la tache solaire. Enfin en hiver, le modèle 3D permet de prédire des consommations de chauffage surestimées de 6,5 % quand M 1D,parois les surestime de 11 % et M1D,sol de 22 %. Les améliorations apportées par notre modèle ont été confirmées pour d’autres types de cellules. D’ailleurs des écarts plus importants entre M1D,sol et le modèle 3D ont été observés pour une cellule dont parois et sol ont des compositions très différentes, alors que l’orientation a aussi un impact. Ce travail confirme la nécessité de représenter plus finement les phénomènes physiques pour des locaux fortement isolés. Des améliorations sont à intégrer, comme la description de l’anisothermie de l’air.

The increasing development of electronics leads to higher constraints regarding their thermal management. Loop heat pipes (LHP) become more and more attractive because they offer thermal efficiency, reliability and large implementation flexibility. However, a better understanding of the physical phenomena involved within them is required in order to optimise their design and predict accurately their operation. An analytical model is developed to highlight the main parameters of a LHP and their influence depending on the operating conditions. Its main originality lies in a thorough consideration of heat transfer in the evaporator. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to study the influence of the contact thermal resistance between the wick and the body of the evaporator, of the effective thermal conductivity of the wick, of the accommodation coefficient linked to the evaporation heat transfer and of the heat transfer with the ambient and with the heat sink. This analysis shows that these parameters can be individually and separately estimated by comparing the model to a set of well-chosen experimental data. An experimental setup is designed and built. It is partially transparent, to observe the location of the liquid and vapour phases in operating conditions. The effects of the heat input, non-condensable gases and of the heat sink temperature are discussed. Nucleate boiling is observed inside the reservoir for high heat fluxes. This phenomenon increases significantly the parasitic heat flux towards the reservoir and therefore decreases the performance of the LHP. Several oscillating phenomena are also observed and correlated to the flow patterns. Finally, distinct condensation regimes are investigated and the mechanisms leading to the bubble detachment in the condenser are discussed. A numerical model is developed in accordance with the geometrical and thermophysical characteristics of the experimental setup. The model is compared with the experimental data. The comparison shows the lack of accuracy of the two-phase pressure drops models in this configuration. Heat and mass transfer in the evaporator are discussed and the effects of boiling in the reservoir and of the thermal conductivity inside the evaporator casing are investigated. The results highlight the importance of the longitudinal thermal conduction inside the tube in the case of conductive materials., La miniaturisation toujours plus poussée des composants électroniques génère des contraintes thermiques de plus en plus importantes. Les boucles diphasiques à pompage thermo-capillaire ou LHP suscitent actuellement un intérêt croissant en raison de leurs bonnes performances thermiques, de leur fiabilité et de leur géométrie permettant une grande souplesse d’implantation. Cependant, une meilleure compréhension des phénomènes en jeu dans ces systèmes est essentielle pour optimiser leur conception et prédire leur comportement de manière fiable. Dans ce travail, un modèle analytique est développé qui intègre les paramètres de fonctionnement d’une LHP, afin d’étudier leur influence en fonction des conditions opératoires. Son originalité principale réside dans la détermination précise de la répartition des différents flux thermiques dans l’évaporateur. Une étude de sensibilité est menée pour évaluer les influences de la résistance de contact entre la structure capillaire poreuse et l’enveloppe de l’évaporateur, de la conductivité thermique équivalente du matériau poreux, du coefficient d’accommodation lié aux transferts de chaleur par évaporation et des coefficients de transfert thermique entre la paroi et le milieu ambiant ou la source froide. Cette analyse montre que les paramètres mentionnés ci-dessus peuvent être estimés individuellement, en comparant le modèle à des données expérimentales judicieusement choisies. Un banc expérimental a également été conçu et fabriqué. Partiellement transparent, il permet l’observation de la position des phases liquide et vapeur au cours du fonctionnement. Les influences de la puissance thermique appliquée, de la présence de gaz incondensables et de la température de la source froide sont analysées. Aux puissances thermiques élevées, un régime d’ébullition nucléée est observé dans le réservoir, qui se traduit par une augmentation des flux parasites vers le réservoir donc une dégradation des performances de la LHP. Plusieurs phénomènes oscillatoires sont également observés et corrélés aux observations visuelles des écoulements. Enfin, différents régimes de condensation sont observés et les mécanismes conduisant au détachement des bulles dans le condenseur sont décrits. Un modèle numérique a été développé, afin de simuler le comportement du banc expérimental en se rapprochant au plus près de ses caractéristiques géométriques et thermophysiques. La comparaison entre les prédictions du modèle et les données expérimentales montre les carences des modèles de pertes de charges dans les écoulements diphasiques, pour la configuration étudiée. Les transferts de chaleur et de masse dans l’évaporateur sont analysés, ainsi que l’influence de l’apparition de l’ébullition dans le réservoir et celle de la conductivité thermique de l’enveloppe de l’évaporateur. Les résultats mettent également en évidence l’importance de la conduction thermique longitudinale dans les canalisations dans le cas d’un matériau conducteur.

The work presented in this thesis has been financed by AIRBUS Defence and Space. It is part of the development strategy of new Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) for atmospheric reentry purposes. The aim is to study the radiative transfer in the ablation zone of the TPS as well as the coupling of the radiative and conductive heat transfer in the low density fibrous matrix. To this end, radiative properties of the materials have to be evaluated since they are not well known. The first step of this study is therefore to characterize the optical and radiative properties of sample provided by AIRBUS Defence and Space and the CREE Stain-Gobain laboratory. Thus, an original identification method based on radiative emission measurement was developed to obtain the radiative properties. The needed emission spectra are measured on silica or carbon samples at high temperature with an experimental setup based on Fourrier Transformed InfraRed spectrometry. The samples are heated using a CO2 laser. An optical setup allows us to measure emission spectra on the sample or a black body used to calibrate the experiment. The identification process is based on the modeling of the radiative distribution factor computed by a Monte Carlo ray-tracing method. It uses Mie theory for infinite cylinder to compute the radiative properties. Temperature are also identified and, for silica, compared to the one measured by a Christiansen pyrometry technique. The last part of this study focuses on the coupled radiative/conductive heat transfer modeling in low density fibrous media. Samples being greatly absorbing, we used the Rosseland equivalent conductivity to model the radiative transfer in volume and obtain the thermal response of the samples in the conditions of the experimental setup used for the identification. For silica, predicted temperatures are superior to the identified ones or those measured with the Christiansen pyrometry technique. This is probably because the Rosseland equivalent conductivity makes no difference between extinction due to absorption and extinction due to scattering., Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse CIFRE financée par AIRBUS Defence & Space s’intègrent dans une problématique de développement de nouveaux Systèmes de Protection Thermique (TPS) pour l’entrée atmosphérique. Ils se focalisent sur l’étude du transfert radiatif dans la zone d’ablation du TPS et son couplage avec le transfert conductif au travers de la matrice fibreuse de faible densité. Pour réaliser cette étude, il a été nécessaire d’évaluer les propriétés thermiques de ces matériaux, notamment les propriétés radiatives qui, contrairement aux conductivités thermiques, demeurent mal connues. La première étape de cette étude a donc visé à caractériser les propriétés optiques et radiatives de certains matériaux fournis par AIRBUS Defence & Space et par le CREE Saint-Gobain. Pour réaliser ces caractérisations, nous avons développé une méthode originale d’identification des propriétés radiatives basée sur des mesures de l’émission propre. Les spectres d’émission à haute température, réalisés sur des échantillons en fibre de silice ou en feutre de carbone nécessaires à l’identification, sont obtenus sur un banc de spectrométrie FTIR développé lors de ces travaux. Les échantillons sont chauffés à haute température à l’aide d’un laser CO2 et un montage optique permet de choisir entre la mesure du flux émis par l’échantillon ou un corps noir servant à l’étalonnage du banc. L’identification des propriétés repose sur la modélisation des facteurs de distribution du rayonnement calculés à l’aide d’une méthode de lancé de rayons Monte Carlo utilisant la théorie de Mie pour un cylindre infini pour le calcul des propriétés radiatives. Les températures identifiées sont comparées aux températures mesurées par pyrométrie au point de Christiansen dans le cas de la silice et montrent un bon accord avec ces dernières. Enfin la dernière partie de ce document est consacrée au couplage conduction-rayonnement dans ce type de milieu. Les échantillons ayant une très forte extinction, le modèle utilisé repose sur la définition d’une conductivité équivalente de Rosseland pour traiter les transferts radiatifs volumiques et ainsi simuler les champs de température au sein des échantillons dans les conditions de chauffage utilisées lors de l’identification. Dans le cas de la silice, cependant, les températures prédites par le modèle utilisant la conductivité équivalente de Rosseland, sont nettement supérieures à celles obtenues par identification ou par pyrométrie au point de Christiansen. Le fait que la conductivité équivalente de Rosseland ne fasse pas la distinction entre une forte extinction due à la diffusion ou à l’absorption est probablement la cause de cette différence.

The domestic and commercial buildings are currently becoming the major sector that consumes the biggest share of the energy in many countries, for example in France. Various researches have been carried out in order to reduce the energy consumption and increase the thermal comfort of builds. Among all the possible approaches, the latent heat storage technology distinguishes itself because of its excellent heat storage ability which can be used to efficiently reduce the discrepancy between the energy consumption and supply. In one of our project, we intend to integrate a type of transparent brick filled with phase change material (PCM) into the buildings' wall design. The PCM inside the brick undergoes the solid-liquid phase change. This dissertation addresses the important issues of the melting process inside the brick. In this dissertation, a non-intrusive experimental method was proposed to improve the existing experiment technique. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) and the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) were coupled to investigate the natural convection and the temperature distribution. Because there was no thermocouple installed inside the brick, the melting process was thus considered to be less impacted. The results showed that this experimental design has a promising future, yet still needs to be improved. Two sets of efficient numerical simulations were also presented in this dissertation. The simulations were based on the thermal lattice Boltzmann method (TLBM), where the natural convection got solved by the LBM and the temperature equation was solved by the finite difference scheme. The enthalpy method was employed to simulate the phase change. Both the 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional configurations were successfully simulated. Moreover, the simulation programs were specifically developed - using the C language - to be run on the graphic processing unit (GPU), in order to increase the simulation efficiency. The simulation results demonstrated a good agreement with our experimental results and the published analytical results., A présent, les bâtiments résidentiels et commerciaux sont en phase de devenir le secteur le plus consommateur d’énergie dans de nombreux pays, comme par exemple en France. Diverses recherches ont été menées de manière à réduire la consommation énergétiques des bâtiments et augmenter leur confort thermique. Parmi tous les différentes approches, la technologie du stockage de chaleur latent se distingue par une très bonne capacité à stocker la chaleur afin de réduire les écarts entre la disponibilité et la demande d’énergie. Dans le cadre de l’un de nos projets, nous avons l’intention d’intégrer au design des murs des bâtiments un type de brique transparente remplie de matériaux à changement de phase (MCP). Les MCP à l’intérieur de la brique sont soumis à des changements de phase liquide-solide. Cette thèse s’attaque à la problématique du processus de fusion au sein de la brique. Au cours de cette thèse, une méthode expérimentale non-intrusive a été développée afin d’améliorer les techniques expérimentales existantes. La vélocimétrie des images des particules (VIP) et la fluorescence induite par laser (FIL) ont été couplées pour étudier la convection naturelle et la distribution de la température. Puisqu’aucun thermocouple n’a été inséré au sein de la brique, le processus de la fusion a été considéré sans perturbation. Les résultats montrent que cette conception expérimentale a un avenir prometteur, même si elle reste à améliorer. Par la suite, nous présentons deux simulations numériques. Ces simulations se fondent sur la méthode de Boltzmann sur réseau à temps de relaxation multiple (LBM MRT), employée pour résoudre le champ de vitesse, et sur la méthode de différences finies, pour obtenir la distribution de la température. La méthode d’enthalpie a quant à elle été utilisée pour simuler le changement de phase. Les simulations en deux dimensions et trois dimensions ont toutes deux été réalisées avec succès. Point important, ces simulations numériques ont été développées en langage C pour tourner spécifiquement sur un processeur graphique (GPU), afin d’augmenter l’efficacité de la simulation en profitant de la capacité de calcul d’un GPU. Les résultats des simulations concordent bien avec les résultats de nos expériences et avec les résultats analytiques publiés.

The automotive air conditioning is a major challenge for the automotive manufacturers insofar it causes a release of 10 g/CO2/km, engenders an extrafuel consumption of 5 % and will be taken into account in the balance sheet in 2020 MEVG. In this perspective, the automotives constructor PSA Peugeot Citroën has developed a new process, absorption air conditioning of water vapor by lithium bromide solution, which marks a break with the classic vapor-compression system. This manuscript is focused at the main body of the system, an innovative evaporator/absorber where both fluids are flowing down and confined between two finely meshed plastic wire screens and maintained between them by capillary effects. The heat and mass transfers in this system occur at the liquid/vapour interface formed by complex menisci that represent the surface of transfer. An experimental test bench allowing the description of three-dimensional shape of menisci using confocal microscopy has been carried. The volume of fluid model has been used for the numerical reconstruction of the liquid/vapour interface. The comparison between numerical and experimental data has shown a good agreement. Numerical simulations have shown that the flow is influenced by the geometry that promotes the creation of stagnant layer solution and vorticity zones. A numerical optimization has been carried with as objective function the heat rate that di uses through the interface. This one has allowed to get out the optimal parameters allowing to have an heat rate of more than 2.5 times higher compared to the reference case. This optimization has highlighted a preferential zone in which heat transfers are maximum. The work has also dealt with the e ect of the shape of the wires and the effect of the shape of menisci on the transfer, showing that it is preferable to work with hydrophobic materials and with cylindrical wires., La climatisation automobile est un enjeu majeur pour les constructeurs automobiles dans la mesure où elle occasionne un rejet de 10 g de CO2 par km, une surconsommation énergétique de près de 5 % et sera pris en compte dans le bilan MEVG à l'horizon 2020. Dans cette perspective, le constructeur automobile PSA Peugeot Citroën a développé un nouveau procédé : la climatisation par absorption de vapeur d'eau par une solution saline de bromure de lithium, qui marque la rupture avec le système classique à compression de vapeur. Le travail mené dans ce manuscrit s'est focalisé au niveau de l'organe principal du système, l'évaporateur/absorbeur où les deux fluides s'écoulent et sont confinés chacun entre deux grilles tissées par des effets capillaires. Les transferts de masse et de chaleur qui s'y produisent, ont lieu à l'interface liquide/vapeur formée par des ménisques de forme complexe qui constituent la surface de d'échange. L'objectif est d'intensifier les transferts de masse et de chaleur qui diffuse à travers l'interface. Un banc expérimental permettant la description tridimensionnelle de la forme des ménisques au moyen de la microscopie confocale a été développé. Le modèle « volume of fluid » a été utilisé pour la reconstruction numérique de l'interface liquide/ vapeur. La comparaison entre les données expérimentales et les simulations numériques a montré un bon accord. Ces simulations montrent que l'écoulement est influencé par la grille avec la création de zones mortes et des mouvements de vorticité. Une optimisation numérique a été menée avec comme fonction objectif le flux qui diffuse à travers l'interface. Celle-ci a permis de définir des paramètres optimales de la grille permettant d’atteindre un flux de chaleur de près de 2,5 fois supérieur à celui du cas de référence. Cette optimisation a permis l'identification d'une zone préférentielle dans laquelle les transferts de chaleur sont maxima. Le travail a aussi abordé l'influence de la forme des fils et de la forme des ménisques, montrant qu'il est préférable d’adopter des matériaux à caractère hydrophobe avec des fils à section circulaire.

Permanent magnet synchronous machines are likely to break down due to poorly controlled heating. The goal of this study was to develop a generic and predictive thermal model to calculate the temperature of machines during the design phase simulating temperatures at various states. These states include: steady state, transient state, fault mode, axial circulating of a cooling fluid in the air-gap and high speed. The lumped parameter method was used to develop this generic thermal model. Meanwhile, a test bench and a prototype instrumented with thermocouples were manufactured to validate the model at the same time. Sensitivity studies of the results of the model to some parameters demonstrated that some convective coefficients, contact conductances and the thermal conductivity of the winding in the radial direction influenced the model. However, these parameters are poorly known, because empirical formulas or abacus are used to calculate them. Using, the prototype and the developed model, these parameters were identified. Three methods of identification were tested in order to find a strategy for the identification: the genetic algorithms method, the Gauss-Newton method and the Levenberg-Marquardt method. Many tests were done on the prototype. The measure of the temperatures on the specific place allows to identify these parameters and to validate the model., Les machines électriques synchrones à aimants permanents sont susceptibles de rencontrer un disfonctionnement suite à un échauffement non maîtrisé. L’objectif de cette étude est de développer un modèle thermique générique et prédictif pouvant simuler diverses situations d’intérêts: régime permanent, régime transitoire, mode dégradé, entrefer immergé, haute vitesse. Pour cela, la méthode nodale est utilisée pour développer le modèle thermique générique. En parallèle, un banc d’essai et un prototype sont conçus pour valider le modèle. L’étude de sensibilité des résultats du modèle à certains paramètres montrent que certains coefficients de convection, certaines conductances de contact et la conductivité thermique radiale du bobinage ont une influence considérable sur les résultats du modèle. Cependant ces paramètres sont mal connus, car ils sont issus des formules empiriques ou des abaques. Grâce au prototype et au modèle développé, ces paramètres sont identifiés. Trois méthodes d’identification sont testées pour aboutir à une stratégie d’identification: les algorithmes génétiques, la méthode de Gauss-Newton et la méthode de Levenberg-Marquardt. Plusieurs essais sont effectués sur le prototype instrumenté. La mesure des températures à des lieux précis du prototype permet d’identifier les paramètres mal connus et de valider le modèle.

When a territory is poorly instrumented, geostationary satellites data can be useful to predict global solar radiation. In this paper, we use geostationary satellites data to generate 2-D time series of solar radiation for the next hour. The results presented in this paper relate to a particular territory, the Corsica Island, but as data used are available for the entire surface of the globe, our method can be easily exploited to another place. Indeed 2-D hourly time series are extracted from the HelioClim-3 surface solar irradiation database treated by the Heliosat-2 model. Each point of the map have been used as training data and inputs of artificial neural networks (ANN) and as inputs for two persistence models (scaled or not). Comparisons between these models and clear sky estimations were proceeded to evaluate the performances. We found a normalized root mean square error (nRMSE) close to 16.5% for the two best predictors (scaled persistence and ANN) equivalent to 35-45% related to ground measurements. Finally in order to validate our 2-D predictions maps, we introduce a new error metric called the gamma index which is a criterion for comparing data from two matrixes in medical physics. As first results, we found that in winter and spring, scaled persistence gives the best results (gamma index test passing rate is respectively 67.7% and 86%), in autumn simple persistence is the best predictor (95.3%) and ANN is the best in summer (99.8%)., Solar Energy (2014)

Because of current environmental issues, some technologies are being developed to reduce the fuel consumption and to reduce the emissions of CO2. Energy recovery by means of Organic Rankine Cycles or Hirn Cycles recovery is one investigated track to answer these issues. At present, some systems based on Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) are available in industry but advanced studies are needed to allow their application in the road transport industry. A better understanding of the two-phase fluid behaviour is necessary to optimize the design models of the components containing a two-phase refrigerant. For the Organic Rankine Cycle system, the thermodynamic conditions are different to standards relevant to refrigeration or air-conditioning systems. Indeed, the key characteristic of the ORC system is the evaporation saturation temperature. Exhaust gases temperature ranges from 400°C to 900°C and the refrigerant evaporation occurs at temperatures higher than 100°C. Almost all the flow boiling heat transfer models or correlations have been obtained for saturation temperatures ranging from -20°C to 40°C which correspond to standards relevant to refrigeration or air conditioning systems. The empirical models for boiling in such conditions are limited by the experimental data on which they are based, whereas analytical and theoretical approaches are needed to advanced knowledge on the behaviour of thermohydraulic two-phase refrigerant. This PhD thesis aims at studying the flow boiling characteristics of R-245fa in a 3.00 inner diameter channel in the thermodynamic conditions of the ORC system. Therefore, the saturation temperature ranged from 60°C to 120°C. To achieve this goal, an experimental test facility was designed and built to conduct refrigerant evaporation experiments. This test facility allowed to perform flow regime visualizations, pressure drop and heat transfer measurements in minichannel. First, an image processing method for two phase flow pattern characterization was developed. Based on this method and with the help of an adequate analysis of the heat transfer coefficient, the main flow regimes have been identified. The influence of saturation temperature on the flow patterns and their transitions has been highlighted. The second objective was to provide new experimental data concerning flow boiling heat transfer in minichannel. Flow boiling heat transfer coefficients at such high temperature have, so to say, almost never been reported in the open literature so far. The influence of saturation temperature on the heat transfer mechanisms has been discussed. In order to evaluate the capability of the current flow boiling prediction methods to predict the heat transfer coefficient, the comparison between experimental results and theoretical results predicted with the commonly used correlations and models were made. Lastly, pressure drop databases are presented. Experimental values of pressure drops were compared against several methods., La valorisation de l'énergie thermique contenue dans des gaz chauds pour produire de l'électricité est possible grâce à l'utilisation de cycles thermodynamiques, parmi lesquels le cycle de Rankine mérite d'être considéré. Cependant, l'industrialisation d'un tel système passe par une connaissance approfondie du comportement thermohydraulique du fluide actif. Ceci permettra d'améliorer le design des principaux composants du système, spécialement les échangeurs de chaleur. Dans le cas du cycle organique de Rankine, les conditions thermodynamiques du fluide sont éloignées des conditions usuelles rencontrées dans les domaines de la climatisation ou de la réfrigération. En effet, le fluide est mis en œuvre dans des conditions proches de son point critique. La température des gaz d'échappement varie entre 400°C et 900°C et l'évaporation se produit à une température de saturation supérieure à 100°C. En ce qui concerne les caractéristiques des écoulements diphasiques (chute de pression, coefficient de transferts thermiques, régimes d'écoulement), la quasi-totalité des méthodes de prédiction a été développée pour des températures comprises entre -20°C et 40°C correspondantes aux domaines de la climatisation ou de la réfrigération. C'est pourquoi la fiabilité de ces modèles reste incertaine dans les conditions d'évaporation du cycle de Rankine, car leur utilisation est limitée par la base de données à partir de laquelle ils ont été établis et ne peuvent être extrapolés avec précision. Cette thèse vise à étudier les caractéristiques thermohydrauliques du R-245fa en ébullition convective dans les conditions du cycle de Rankine. Dans un premier temps, un banc expérimental a été conçu et construit afin de réaliser des tests en ébullition convective dans un minicanal de 3.00 mm de diamètre. Ce banc expérimental permet de faire des mesures sur les régimes d'écoulement, les coefficients de transfert de chaleur et les pertes de charge par frottement. Dans un second temps, une méthode de traitement d'image a été développée afin de caractériser différents régimes d'écoulement. Cette méthode couplée à une analyse des transferts thermiques a permis d'identifier quatre principaux régimes d'écoulement. L'influence de la température de saturation sur les régimes d'écoulement et leurs transitions a été soulignée et discutée. Les caractéristiques des bulles ont également été étudiées à l'aide de cette méthode. Dans un troisième temps, une base de données expérimentale sur les coefficients de transfert de chaleur a été créée. L'influence de la température de saturation sur les mécanismes de transfert thermique a été étudiée dans ces conditions originales. Afin de tester la fiabilité des méthodes de prédiction, les résultats expérimentaux ont été confrontés à différentes méthodes. Finalement, les chutes de pressions ont été mesurées et une analyse paramétrique a été menée. Les mesures ont été confrontées aux principales méthodes disponibles dans la littérature.

The present investigation deals with natural convection flow in a vertical open-ended channel with wall constant heat flux. This study falls under the framework of research on passive cooling of building integrated PV components. For this purpose, a numerical code developed with Finite Differences scheme is used to solve Navier-Stokes equations and simulate the natural convection in a channel. This problem is difficult to solve because the writing of inlet/outlet boundary conditions remains an open problem. First, our work consists of studying different boundary conditions for the the numerical benchmark AMETH. The work carried out has enabled a first choice of boundary conditions. The study then focuses on numerical and experimental quantification and qualification for two fluids : air ( convection - radiation) and water ( pure convection) . Experimental and numerical results were compared and discrepancies were analyzed. Several phenomenological aspects ( surface radiation, thermophysical properties variation, Prandtl number variation ) were discussed in order to characterize their influence on flow and heat transfer. Finally, in order to provide some answers on dynamical boundary conditions, we simulated natural convection of a channel inside a cavity and tried a modeling., Notre investigation porte sur la simulation numérique des échanges thermo-convectifs dans un canal vertical ouvert à flux imposé. Cette étude rentre dans le cadre des recherches sur le rafraîchissement passif des composants PV intégrés au bâtiment. À cet effet, un code numérique en Différences Finies est utilisé pour résoudre les équations de Navier-Stokes et simuler la convection naturelle dans un canal. Ce problème reste difficile à résoudre parce que l'écriture des conditions aux limites d'entrée et de sortie reste un problème ouvert. Notre travail consiste d'abord en étude des différentes conditions aux limites pour le benchmark numérique AMETH. Les travaux réalisés ont permis de faire un premier choix sur les conditions aux limites. L'étude s'oriente ensuite sur la qualification et la quantification numériques et expérimentales pour deux fluides : l'air (convection-rayonnement) et l'eau (convection pure). Les résultats numériques/expérimentaux ont été comparés et les discordances ont été analysées. Plusieurs aspects phénoménologiques (rayonnement entre surfaces, variation des propriétés thermo-physiques, variation du nombre de Prandtl) ont été abordés afin de caractériser leurs influences respectives sur l'écoulement et le transfert thermique. Enfin, dans le but d'apporter des éléments de réponses sur les conditions aux limites dynamiques, nous avons simulé la convection naturelle d'un canal dans une cavité et tenté une modélisation.

Non-premixed flame stabilization is still an important issue in combustion. Addressing this issue requires to evaluate the relative importance of aerodynamic, thermal and chemical phenomena involved in the stabilization mechanisms. This thesis develops to this end an experimental approach, with a particular focus on the influence of thermal boundary conditions, examining the role of heat transfer in a twofold analysis. At first, the attachment zone of a rim-stabilized jet-flame is investigated, by careful consideration of the coupling existing between the burner lip temperature and the flame attachment location relative to the burner. Several regions have been identified according to the flame leading edge behavior, which evolves from diffusive to propagative closer to the aerodynamic stability limits. Besides, by modifying the burner thermal properties, a change has been shown in the relative roles of thermal and chemical quenching of the flame by the burner wall, depending on the burner lip temperature. Secondly, the attention is directed to transitions between different combustion regimes, namely attached and lifted flames. In particular, beyond the stable state of an attached flame, its lifting process is investigated. Examining in which conditions destabilization of the flame occurs indeed appears to be an ideal opportunity to gain insight into the aerothermochemical coupling and equilibriums existing prior to lift-off. Thus, the lifting process has been shown to be modified by the reactant initial temperature, in close relationship with the change in occurrence of localized transitory extinction events of the reaction zone., La problématique de la stabilisation des flammes non-prémélangées reste primordiale. Il faut pour la résoudre déterminer l’importance relative des phénomènes aérodynamiques, thermiques et chimiques intervenant dans les mécanismes de stabilisation. La démarche expérimentale utilisée pour cela au cours de cette thèse porte une attention particulière sur l’influence des conditions aux limites thermiques, et comporte deux volets à travers lesquels le rôle des transferts thermiques est mis en exergue. D’abord, la zone d’attachement d’une flamme stabilisée derrière la lèvre du brûleur est examinée, en considérant les couplages entre le positionnement du bout de flamme à proximité du brûleur et la température de la lèvre. Différentes régions ont ainsi pu être identifiées selon le comportement du bout de flamme, qui évolue depuis une nature diffusive vers une nature propagative à l’approche des limites aérodynamiques de stabilité. Par ailleurs, une modification des propriétés thermiques du brûleur a permis de mettre en évidence une évolution, avec la température de la lèvre, du rôle relatif des modes de coincement thermique et chimique de la flamme par la paroi du brûleur. Ensuite, l’étude concerne non plus un état stabilisé de la flamme, mais les transitions entre les différents régimes de combustion, et plus particulièrement le décrochage d’une flamme attachée. L’examen des conditions conduisant à la déstabilisation de la flamme est un moyen d’apporter des éléments-clefs de compréhension quant aux couplages et aux équilibres aérothermochimiques prévalant préalablement au décrochage. Une évolution du processus de décrochage a ainsi été mise en avant avec l’augmentation de la température initiale des réactants, en lien avec l’évolution de phénomènes transitoires d’extinction locale de la zone de réaction.

International audience; The possibility to generate 2-D predictions of solar radiation one hour ahead and over a large geographic area is the focus of this study. In that view, hourly satellite maps of irradiations extracted from the Heliosat-3 have been used as training data and inputs of artificial neural networks (ANN) and as inputs for apersistence model. These models were computed for each point of the map, allowing generating solar radiation predictions maps. Comparisons between the computed maps and satellite estimations ones were proceed to evaluate the performances. The first results show that ANN and persistence have similar performances in a majority of pixel.

Among technologies capable to produce electricity locally without contributing to GHG releases, building integrated PV systems (BIPV) could be major contributor. However, when exposed to intense solar radiation, the temperature of PV modules increase significantly, leading to a reduction in efficiency so that only about 14% of the incident radiation is converted into electrical energy. The high temperature also decrease the life of the modules, thereby making passive cooling of the PV components through natural convection a desirable and cost-effective means of overcoming both difficulties. An experimental investigation of heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of natural convection of air in vertical and inclined open-ended heated channels is therefore undertaken so as provide reliable information for the design of BIPV. Two experimental set ups were developed and used during the present investigations; one located at the CETHIL laboratory in Lyon, the F-device and the other located at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, the R-device. Both channels consisted of two wide parallel plates each of which could be subjected to controlled uniform or non-uniform heat fluxes. The investigation has been conducted by analyzing the mean wall temperatures, measured by thermocouples and mean velocity profiles and turbulent quantity distributions of the flow, measured with a PIV system. Flow patterns close to the heated faces were also investigated. The study is particularly focused on the transition region from laminar to turbulent flow. Three different heating geometric arrangements are examined in the modified Rayleigh number range from 3.86 x 105 to 6.22 x 106. The first is a vertical channel with one wall uniformly heated while the other was unheated, the second was a vertical channel in which both walls were non-uniformly heated and the third is an inclined channel uniformly heated from above. In the vertical configurations the width-to-height channel aspect ratio was fixed at 1:15 and in the inclined ones at 1:16. It is shown that the flow is very sensitivity to disturbances emanating from the ambient conditions. Moreover, the propagation of vortical structures and unsteadiness in the flow channel which are necessary to enhance heat transfer, occurred downstream of the mid-channel section at Ra* = 3.5 x 106 for uniformly and asymmetrically heated channels inclined between 60° and 90° to the horizontal. Indeed, these unsteady flow phenomena appears upstream the location of the inflexion point observed in the temperature excess distribution of the heated wall. In the case of non-uniform heating on both sides of the channel, a stronger ‘disruption mechanism’ exists, which leads to enhanced mixing and increased Reynolds stresses over most of the width of the channel. Empirical correlations of average Nusselt number as a function of modified Rayleigh number were obtained for each configuration., Face à la problématique énergétique, les solutions envisagées dans le domaine du bâtiment s’orientent sur un mix énergétique favorisant la production locale ainsi que l’autoconsommation. Concernant l’électricité, les systèmes photovoltaïques intégrés au bâtiment (BiPV) représentent l’une des rares technologies capables de produire de l’électricité localement et sans émettre de gaz à effet de serre. Cependant, le niveau de température auquel fonctionnent ces composants, influence sensiblement leur efficacité ainsi que leur durée de vie. Ces deux constats mettent en lumière l’importance du refroidissement passif par convection naturelle de ces modules. La configuration privilégiée est une configuration d’intégration au sein d’une enveloppe ventilée qualifiée de double-peau photovoltaïque. La présente étude expérimentale porte sur les transferts de chaleur et les caractéristiques de l’écoulement en convection naturelle dans des canaux chauffés verticaux ou inclinés. Deux bancs d’essais existants ont été complétés afin d’obtenir des données. Ils sont composés de deux plaques planes parallèles séparées par une lame d’air. Les parois sont soumises à des conditions aux limites de type densité de flux imposée. Les températures moyennes à la paroi ont été mesurées par thermocouples. Un système de vélocimétrie par image de particules a permis d’obtenir des profils de vitesse moyenne ainsi que les distributions d’intensité turbulente dans l’écoulement. Les champs de vitesse instantanée ont également été examinés. Trois configurations ont été étudiées avec un nombre de Rayleigh variant entre 3,86 x 105 et 6,22 x 106. La première est un canal vertical avec une des deux parois chauffée uniformément. La seconde est un canal vertical dans lequel les deux parois sont chauffées de façon non-uniforme et alternée. La troisième est de type canal incliné chauffé uniformément sur la paroi supérieure. Le rapport de forme du canal (largeur/hauteur) est de 1/15 pour le deux premières configurations et de 1/16 pour la troisième. Une attention particulière a été portée sur l’identification de la zone de transition laminaire-turbulent. L’étude a permis de mettre en évidence la sensibilité de l’écoulement aux perturbations extérieures. Pour un chauffage uniforme et asymétrique, à partir d’un nombre de Rayleigh Ra* de 3.5 x 106 et pour θ = 60° et 90°, il a été constaté que la propagation de structures cohérentes dans le canal a lieu à partir de la mi-hauteur de ce canal. Ces instabilités favorisent alors les transferts thermiques. Dans le cas d’un chauffage non-uniforme sur les deux parois du canal, l’écoulement est fortement perturbé ce qui conduit à l’augmentation du brassage et de la contrainte de Reynolds sur la majorité de la largeur du canal. Enfin, pour chacune des configurations, des corrélations permettant de quantifier les transferts de chaleur à la paroi et au sein de la lame d’air (nombre de Nusselt moyen en fonction du nombre de Rayleigh) ont été établies.

The use of energy storage systems that exploit latent heat represents a promising solution to erase the heating demand of residential buildings during periods of peak demand. Equipping a building with such components can contribute to the goal of peak shaving in terms of public electricity grid supply. Significant drawbacks, however, are the low thermal conductivity of Phase Change Materials (PCM) that typically constitute such systems,and the requirement for a high rate of discharge. Consequently, the use of so-called architectured materials has been put forward as a means to optimize the effective conductivity of storage materials. Our work is focused upon the development of a methodology to design optimal materials for such systems that meet the criteria of energy storage and energy output. A so-called “top-down metholodogy” was implemented for the present work. This approach includes three scales of interest: building (top), system and material (down). The aim of the building scale analysis is to formulate a set of general design requirements. These are complemented by performance indicators, which are defined at the scale of the system. Finally, at the scale of the material, the architecture of the identified material is elaborated. A numerical simulation tool was developed to determine performance indicators for a latent heat energy storage system comprising of an air/PCM heat exchanger. This model was tested against a benchmark analytical solution and validated though comparison to experimental data. The developed methodology is applied to the specific case of an air/PCM exchanger latent-heat energy storage system. The system is analysed through the study of dimensionless numbers, which provide a set of design indicators for the system. As a result of this stage, the optimal material and functional properties are thus identified. Finally, an architectured material is proposed that would satisfy the design requirements of the storage system. We demonstrate that an arrangement composed of a sandwich of planar layers with nails and PCM can offer the required material properties. Furthermore, in order to meet the desired functional properties, the system design is modified by the addition of fins at the exchange surfaces. With the addition of 20 fins of 3mm thickness attached to the exchange surface of the sandwich panel, the storage system eliminated the heating demand for 2 hours during the period of high daily demand in winter., L'utilisation de systèmes de stockage par chaleur latente constitue une solution permettant l'effacement du chauffage d'un bâtiment résidentiel pendant les périodes de forte demande. Une telle stratégie peut avoir pour objectif le lissage des pics d'appel en puissance du réseau électrique. Cependant, la faible conductivité des matériaux à changement de phase (MCP) qui constituent ces systèmes et le besoin d'une puissance de décharge importante imposent l'utilisation de matériaux dits "architecturés" afin d'optimiser la conductivité équivalente des matériaux stockeurs. Nos travaux s'intéressent plus particulièrement à la méthodologie pour la conception de matériaux pour ces systèmes afin de satisfaire aux exigences de stockage d'énergie et de puissance de restitution. La méthodologie proposée dans ces travaux de thèse est dénommé « Top-down methodology ». Cette méthodologie comporte trois échelles : l'échelle bâtiment (top), l'échelle système et l'échelle matériau (down). L'échelle bâtiment a comme objectif de spécifier le cahier des charges. A l'échelle système, des indicateurs de performance sont définis. Enfin, à l'échelle matériau, l'architecture du matériau solution est proposée. Un outil numérique modélisant le système de stockage par chaleur latente de type échangeur de chaleur air/MCP à été développé pour évaluer les indicateurs de performance. Ce modèle numérique est vérifié avec un cas analytique et validé par comparaison avec des données expérimentales. La méthodologie développée est mise en œuvre dans un deuxième cas d'étude pour le même type de système de stockage. L'analyse du système via les nombres adimensionnels permet d'obtenir des indicateurs de performance du système. A l'issue de cette étape, les propriétés matériaux et fonctionnelles optimales du système sont donc connues. Enfin, un matériau architecturé est alors proposé afin de satisfaire les exigences du système de stockage. Nous montrons alors que par l'intermédiaire d'une plaque sandwich contenant des clous et du MCP les propriétés matériaux nécessaires sont obtenues. De plus, afin de satisfaire aux exigences en termes de propriétés fonctionnelles, le design du système est modifié en ajoutant des ailettes sur les surfaces d'échange. Nous montrons que avec 20 ailettes de 3mm d'épaisseur sur la surface d'échange de la planche à clous, le chauffage est effacé pendant 2h lors de la période de forte demande journalière pendant l'hiver.

International audience; In this article, we demonstrate that the thermal conductivity of nanostructured porous silicon is reduced by amorphization and also that this amorphous phase in porous silicon can be created by swift (high-energy) heavy ion irradiation. Porous silicon samples with 41%-75% porosity are irradiated with 110 MeV uranium ions at six different fluences. Structural characterisation by micro-Raman spectroscopy and SEM imaging show that swift heavy ion irradiation causes the creation of an amorphous phase in porous Si but without suppressing its porous structure. We demonstrate that the amorphization of porous silicon is caused by electronic-regime interactions, which is the first time such an effect is obtained in crystalline silicon with single-ion species. Furthermore, the impact on the thermal conductivity of porous silicon is studied by micro-Raman spectroscopy and scanning thermal microscopy. The creation of an amorphous phase in porous silicon leads to a reduction of its thermal conductivity, up to a factor of 3 compared to the non-irradiated sample. Therefore, this technique could be used to enhance the thermal insulation properties of porous Si. Finally, we show that this treatment can be combined with pre-oxidation at 300 °C, which is known to lower the thermal conductivity of porous Si, in order to obtain an even greater reduction.

International audience; Cracks and defects in construction materials can cause an increase in their moisture permeability, and accentuate their degradation. In order to accurately assess the durability and the overall performance of building facades, one must dispose of a reliable method for the identification of the damage state of such materials. The present work aims at developing a methodology for the detection and monitoring of damage and fractures in building materials. Digital image correlation and acoustic emission monitoring were simultaneously performed during tensile loading tests of fibre-reinforced mortar samples. The optical technique was found able to reveal all ranges of cracks, from microscopic to macroscopic, and an image-processing procedure was conducted as to quantify their evolution in the course of the degradation of the samples. It was also found that the acoustic activity could be related to the optical measurements in terms of damage quantification and localisation.

International audience; In tomography algorithms, the complex amplitude scattering matrix corresponds to the input parameter. When considering three-dimensional targets, the scattering matrix is now containing vectorial information. Thus, this scattering matrix might be calculated with various polarization projections. Moreover, when dealing with experimental data, we are almost every time faced with truncated data. We focus here on the impact of selecting parts of the amplitude scattering matrix elements versus others and in particular on the influence of the polarization choices on the imaging results. In order to better apprehend the physical content associated to each polarization term, the study is conducted with a simple vectorial induced current reconstruction algorithm allowing to reconstructed qualitative maps of the scene. This algorithm is applied on scaled models of aggregates combined with experimental scattered fields acquired in the microwave frequency range.

Vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) are composed of an evacuated nanoporous core material, and a barrier envelope to atmospheric gases. Their apparent thermal conductivity after manufacturing is approximately 5 mW/(m.K), five to eight times lower than that of conventional insulation materials. Compared to conventional insulation materials, the most important issue remains in the duality performance / durability. The answer lies in the understanding and modeling of heat and mass transfer in VIPs. Many experimental and numerical studies about heat transfer led to a semi-empirical model for the apparent thermal conductivity of a VIP, taking into account the different transfer modes in the panel. This model highlights the main mechanism of VIPs aging: due to gas permeation through the envelope, pressure and humidity in the panel increase gradually over time, which causes an increase of the apparent thermal conductivity. The study of mass transfer through the gas barrier envelope is particularly difficult for three main reasons. First, the permeation modeling of VIPs envelopes (multilayer membranes with metalized polymer films) has to take into account micro-defects in the metallic layers, which play a key role in the total permeation rate. Second, the permeances to be measured are too low for many conventional methods, especially for dry air. Third, a literature analysis shows that the classical model for mass transfer through barrier envelopes does not take into account the combined influence of temperature and relative humidity, which is a great lacuna. From experimental data available in the literature, the role of relative humidity on the barrier properties of the VIPs envelopes is highlighted. The existence of a coupling phenomenon between the mass flows of the various gases is hypothesized to start the establishment of a new gas permeation model, which takes into account partial pressure and total pressure, and thus the molar concentration of each gas in the mixture. The predictions of this model are compared with predictions based on the classical model for gas permeation, and the differences between the two models are analyzed. Two experimental campaign are then implemented to measure envelope permeance, through whole VIPs aging in climatic boxes and through direct measurement of the permeance on membrane samples (manometric method). These measurements are carried out at fixed temperature and relative humidity (T = 48 °C, φ = 65 % HR), but with a total pressure ranging from 80 mbar to 1 bar. This exploratory measurement campaign shows no significant influence of the total pressure on the apparent permeability to water vapor. These results are used to draw first conclusions on the respective roles of the partial pressure and the total pressure, and suggest some outlooks to the experimental approach initiated in this study., Les panneaux d'isolation sous vide (PIV) sont constitués d'un matériau de coeur nanoporeux en dépression, et d'une enveloppe barrière aux gaz atmosphériques. Leur conductivité thermique initiale est de l'ordre de 5 mW/(m.K), cinq à huit fois inférieure à celle des isolants conventionnels. Au regard des isolants classiques, le questionnement le plus important concerne le couple performance / durabilité. La réponse passe par la compréhension et la modélisation des transferts thermiques et massiques dans les PIV. De nombreuses études expérimentales et numériques ont conduit à un modèle semi-empirique pour la conductivité thermique apparente d'un PIV, prenant en compte les différents modes de transfert dans le panneau. Ce modèle met en lumière le principal mécanisme de vieillissement : du fait de la perméation gazeuse à travers l'enveloppe, pression et humidité dans le panneau remontent au cours du temps, ce qui engendre une augmentation de la conductivité thermique. L'étude des transferts massiques à travers l'enveloppe est particulièrement délicate. Premièrement, la modélisation de la perméabilité des enveloppes utilisées (membranes multicouches de films polymères métallisés) repose sur la prise en compte des micro-défauts dans les couches métallisées, qui gouvernent le débit total de perméation. Deuxièmement, les valeurs des perméabilités à mesurer sont trop basses pour beaucoup de techniques conventionnelles. Troisièmement, une analyse de la littérature montre une lacune de taille en ce qui concerne la prise en compte de l'influence conjointe de la température et de l'humidité relative dans le modèle classique de perméation gazeuse. En se basant sur des données expérimentales existantes, le rôle de l'humidité relative sur les propriétés barrières des enveloppes des PIV est mis en lumière. L'existence d'un couplage entre les flux des différents gaz est posé comme hypothèse de départ à la mise en place d'un nouveau modèle de perméation gazeuse, prenant en compte pression partielle et pression totale, et donc la concentration molaire de chaque gaz dans le mélange. Les prédictions de ce modèle sont comparées à celles issues du modèle classique de perméation gazeuse, et les différences de comportement entre les deux modèles sont mises en avant. Deux séries de mesure de perméance sont ensuite mises en place, par vieillissement de PIV en enceintes climatiques et par mesure directe de perméance sur échantillons de membrane (méthode manométrique). Ces mesures sont menées à température et humidité relative fixées (T = 48 °C, φ = 65 % HR), mais avec une pression totale variant de 80 mbar à 1 bar. Cette campagne de mesure exploratoire ne montre pas d'influence notable de la pression totale sur la perméabilité à la vapeur d'eau. Ces résultats permettent de dresser les premières conclusions sur le rôle respectif de la pression partielle et de la pression totale, et de proposer une suite à la démarche expérimentale initiée dans cette étude.

As energy saving is so important in buildings nowadays, envelopes performances have to be more efficient and have to deal with more obligations, such as moisture accumulation and mould growth. This study relies on an experimental wooden frame house exposed to the natural conditions of Grenoble, France. It has been widely instrumented so the wall’s temperature and humidity is monitored at different depths. As a consequence, complete dataset are available and can be used to validate numerical model. In this work, an existing numerical model named HAM-Tolls has been used to simulate the heat, air and moisture coupled transfers at the building scale. The method developed here consists in validating the numerical model step by step, with studying specific transfers separately. The first step deals with heat and mass transfers across the walls. Then, the heat transfers across a ventilated air gap and the air change rate under natural conditions have been studied much in detail. The final step of this works consists in simulating simultaneously every transfer at the building scale. This latest simulation’s results were compared both on a local and on a global point of view with the measurements. As they were found to be in good agreement, this allows concluding on the methodology efficiency, the validity of the modelling assumption and gives good hope with extending this methodology to other studies. Specifically, the simulation tool is able to predict correctly the average temperature and humidity content within the walls. Therefore, it should be suitable with estimating the wall components influence on the wall durability, its energy efficiency and its impact on the occupant’s thermal comfort., L’évolution actuelle des exigences en termes de performance énergétique des bâtiments a fait apparaître de nouveaux enjeux et problématiques scientifiques, dont ceux liés à l’humidité. Cette étude s’appuie sur une cellule expérimentale construite sur la technologie des maisons à ossature bois et soumise aux conditions climatiques réelles de Grenoble. L’instrumentation de ce bâtiment et le suivi de l’évolution en température et en humidité dans les différentes couches de l’enveloppe permettent de définir des séquences nécessaires à la validation de modèles numériques. Dans cet objectif, un modèle existant nommé HAM-Tools a été utilisé pour simuler les transferts couplés de chaleur, d’air et d’humidité à l’échelle du bâtiment. La démarche de validation a été décomposée en plusieurs étapes, de manière à cibler des transferts spécifiques et d’en améliorer la modélisation. Ces études localisées concernent les transferts couplés de chaleur et de masse à travers les parois solides, la modélisation des transferts de chaleur à travers une lame d’air ventilée et enfin la modélisation du renouvellement de l’air intérieur en conditions naturelles. Pour estimer la précision globale du modèle, c'est-à-dire à l’échelle du bâtiment, une séquence expérimentale a été simulée en prenant en compte l’ensemble des transferts couplés simultanément. Les performances du modèle sont discutées à partir des mesures locales, c'est-à-dire dans les parois, puis globales. La bonne concordance entre mesures et résultats de simulation permet de conclure sur la validité et la généricité de la démarche mise en œuvre et les hypothèses de simulation. Plus particulièrement, il est apparu que l’outil de modélisation permet de prédire correctement le comportement moyen des parois en humidité et en température. Il est donc envisageable de l’utiliser pour simuler et estimer l’impact des constituants des parois en termes de durabilité, de performances énergétiques et de confort de l’occupant.

With the current issues concerning the potential savings in the building sector, reducing building energy consumption is a key point. Up to now, efforts have been focused on insulation to separate the inner ambiance from the fluctuation of the outside air temperature. However, insulating a building from its environment deprives it from the renewable free energy sources which exchange with the envelope, either they are heating or cooling sources. Using the building envelope to exploit these resources is the very principle of the bioclimatic architecture. But bioclimatic systems have never been evaluated regarding the amount of available energy they could use, partly because the energy exchanges between the resources and the building have never been really qualified regarding to the building needs, neither quantified in terms of available energy capacity to meet these needs. The aim of this thesis is thus to propose a method to assess both: - the capacity of the environmental resources to cover the building needs, - the ability of the building to exploit the available energy resources. The method is mainly based on energy simulation and the basic data is a comparison of the behaviour of a building with and without a given environmental resource. The building energy needs without the resource can be compared to the resource potential and this comparison give the useful potential of the resource. Moreover, by comparing the building energy needs in the simulation with and without resource, we can get the amount of energy actually used by the building. From these two quantities, the useful and the exploited potential, a set of indicators can be defined and adapted to thermal comfort (heating and cooling needs) and three resources (sun, sky and air). The indicators are then applied to a study case and the results are analysed not only at the scale of the building, but also at the scale of each part of the envelope. A first analysis of the global results over the year is performed to get a first understanding of the state of the resources and the building performances. In a second step, the values are analysed at each time step, to characterize the behaviour of the building towards the environment. Finally, the indicators can be used to design buildings, in several ways. We performed a parametric analysis of the insulation level over the potential and performance indicators. Then, we used them to assess the bioclimatic performances of existing solar technologies. In a final step, the indicators have been used as criteria to optimize the building envelope parameters. Thus, the envelope parameters are optimized according to the minimization of the energy need, but also according to the maximization of the exploited potential., Les règles et usages actuels de conception des bâtiments sont essentiellement basés sur la minimisation des déperditions thermiques, ce qui se traduit par la prédominance de l’isolation thermique comme solution d’enveloppe. Or cette logique n'est pas nécessairement la plus pertinente car des ressources énergétiques existent dans l'environnement, et leur apport mériterait d'être pris en considération. Certaines technologies bioclimatiques, et surtout solaires, existent déjà mais leur utilisation n'est pas du tout généralisée à cause d'un manque de repère sur leurs performances. Pour considérer la démarche bioclimatique, il est nécessaire de pouvoir évaluer à la fois la "qualité énergétique" de l'environnement, et l'aptitude des bâtiments à exploiter cet environnement. La méthodologie présentée dans cette thèse est basée sur le calcul d'indicateurs de performance bioclimatique issus de simulations numériques de bâtiments dans diverses conditions climatiques. La simulation permet de supprimer facilement une ressource pour pouvoir obtenir les besoins d'un bâtiment non impacté par la ressource. Ces besoins peuvent alors être comparés à chaque instant au potentiel de la ressource afin de déterminer un potentiel utile, valorisable par le bâtiment. Il est également possible de comparer les besoins du bâtiment dans la simulation sans et avec la ressource et d'en déduire la quantité d'énergie provenant de la ressource réellement utilisée par le bâtiment pour couvrir ses besoins. Un jeu d'indicateurs est ainsi défini pour toutes les ressources et tous les besoins d'un bâtiment, et adapté plus particulièrement aux besoins de confort thermique (chauffage et rafraîchissement) et à trois ressources de l'environnement (le soleil, la voûte céleste et l'air extérieur). Un cas d'étude est alors choisi pour appliquer cette méthode et les résultats sont analysés à l'échelle du bâtiment tout entier ainsi qu'à l'échelle de chaque paroi. Une première analyse globale, sur toute l'année, permet de fixer des points de repères sur l'état des ressources et l'exploitation qui en est faite par les bâtiments. Dans un second temps, les résultats instantanés sont analysés de manière dynamique, et montrent que ces nouveaux indicateurs permettent de bien caractériser le comportement d'un bâtiment dans son environnement. Enfin, les indicateurs sont utilisés dans une approche de conception des bâtiments, et plusieurs pistes sont explorées. Une étude paramétrique est tout d'abord menée et permet d'observer l'influence du niveau d'isolation sur les indicateurs de potentiel et de performance. Puis ces indicateurs sont utilisés pour évaluer la performance bioclimatique de solutions d'enveloppe solaires. Dans un troisième temps, une optimisation de l'enveloppe est menée selon deux critères : un critère classique de minimisation du besoin, mais également un critère bioclimatique de maximisation de l'exploitation du potentiel solaire.

The increasing heat dissipation from electronic devices on board satellites makes it necessary to find solutions for their cooling. In the present case, 20 electronic components in series need to dissipate a heat flux of 20 kW/m2 owing to microevaporators mounted in a refrigeration system. An approach for optimizing the design of the evaporators based on the entropy generation minimization is presented here. To solve this thermal problem, a steady-state three-dimensional conduction model is combined with thermohydraulic flow boiling models valid for microchannels. The best design corresponds to an aspect ratio (ratio between height and width) around 8.8. The sensitivity of the results to the choice of the flow boiling models is also analyzed.

Reducing the building consumption passes through : energy saving, energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources for a local production of electricity. For the last point, the building integrated photovoltaic systems represent a promising solution. However, electrical yield and life time of silicon solar cells decrease with the increase of its operating temperature, that is why integrated configurations which limits cell overheating must be developed. The solution considered is the double-skin façade configuration : photovoltaic panels are separated from the building wall(or roof) by an opened air channel. This induces a natural convection flow that cools the rear surface of the photovoltaic panels. This flow can also be used for natural ventilation of buildings in summer or for air preheating in winter. This experimental study is part of a project on photovoltaic double-skin façades. In this project, each physical phenomena are analysed separately first, and the coupling between the different phenomena are studied in a second time. This thesis deals with the natural convection into the vertical double-skin façades. The system is modelled by a vertical channel with isoflux heating at the two mains walls. An experimental apparatus was developed in the laboratory for studying natural convection in water in a vertical channel. Water is used as the working fluid to avoid radiative heat transfer and obtain a pure convective flow. The channel is 65 cm high with an adjustable gap. It is placed in a 1.5 m high glass tank filled with 160 L of distilled water. The main walls are heated through 24 independant electrical heaters maintaining a constant heat flux, which allows differents boundary condition (symmetrical, asymmetrical, uniforme, alternated, etc). Heat flux and temperature measurements are made at the walls. The velocity (horizontal and vertical) and temperature of the flow are measured through a two components Laser Doppler Velocimetry system combined with a micro-thermocouple (25 μm diameter). This apparatus is described in details and the measurement uncertainties were characterized. The symmetrical uniform heating configuration was studied here with the analyse of velocity and temperature profiles in the channel for several input power (46 W to 562 W). These profiles show a change in flow regime in the channel that is analysed with turbulent quantities along the channel. Moreover, the pressure is estimated in the channel from the analysis of all the terms of the momentum conservation equations.; La réduction de la consommation des bâtiments passe par : l'économie d'énergie, l'efficacité énergétique et l'utilisation des énergies renouvelables. Sur ce dernier point, l'intégration à grande échelle de composants photovoltaïques (PV) est une solution. Le rendement et la durée de vie des cellules PV en silicium cristalin diminuant avec l'augmentation de leur température de fonctionnement, il est essentiel de mettre au point des configurations d'intégration limitant leur échauffement. L'intégration en configuration de double-peau – la surface PV est séparée du bâtiment par une lame d'air – est une solution prometteuse. Sous l'effet de la chaleur, un écoulement de convection naturelle se met en place entre les deux parois, refroidissant ainsi les panneaux PV. Cet écoulement peut également servir de moteur pour la ventilation en été, et de préchauffage de l'air en hiver. Cette étude, expérimentale, fait partie d'un projet visant à comprendre le fonctionnement des double-peaux PV en analysant séparément les différents phénomènes physiques avant de prendre en compte l'ensemble des couplages. Elle porte plus particulièrement sur la convection naturelle au sein des double-façades verticales. Ici, la double-peau est modélisée par un canal vertical dont les deux parois principales sont chauffées sous des conditions de flux imposé. Un banc d'essais a été développé pour étudier la convection naturelle dans un canal vertical en eau. L'eau a été choisie pour se placer dans le cas d'un écoulement de convection pure (pas de rayonnement entre les parois). C'est un canal vertical de 65 cm de haut avec un écartement réglable placé dans une cuve de 1,5 m de haut contenant 160 L d'eau. Les parois sont chauffées à l'aide de 24 chaufferettes indépendantes délivrant un flux de chaleur uniforme, ce qui permet d'appliquer différentes configurations de chauffage. Des mesures de flux et de température sont réalisées au niveau des parois, et un système couplant de la velocimétrie laser Doppler deux composantes à un micro-thermocouple (25 μm) a été développé pour avoir accès aux vitesses verticale et horizontale et à la température dans le canal. Ce banc et son instrumentation sont décrits et les incertitudes de mesure associées ont été caractérisées. La configuration de chauffage uniforme symétrique a été étudiée ici pour différentes puissances injectées. Les profils de vitesse et de température moyennes mettent en évidence la présence d'un changement de régime d'écoulement dans le canal pour un nombre de Rayleigh indéntifié. L'étude approfondie des profils des fluctuations de vitesse et de température a permis de mettre au point une modélisation comportementale de ce changement de régime. De plus, une première approche est développée pour évaluer la pression dans le canal à partir de l'analyse et de l'estimation des différents termes de l'équation de conservation de la quantité de mouvement.

An important matter in the field of building physics is the questioning of how well buildings sustain ageing, and how their overall efficiency evolves over their lifetime. Many causes for degradation are carried by moisture transfer through these porous materials. Indeed, infiltrated water may transport chemicals, alter mechanical properties, and cause freeze thaw damage or mould development. It may also affect thermal properties and energetic efficiency, as well as the health and comfort of the occupants. The understanding of how moisture transfer properties evolve during the lifespan of building materials is however far from complete. The pore structure of a material itself may change over time, or be altered by cracks and defects caused by mechanical loading and aggravated by moisture-induced degradation. All sizes of fractures may have a strong impact on heat and moisture flow in the building envelope, and their influence is to be accounted for in any long-term performance assessment, not only of building and building components, but of any built structure in general. A considerable amount of work has already been performed in order to allow predicting the hygrothermal behaviour of buildings over longer periods of time. However, an accurate prediction of all ranges of damage in a building component, from microscopic to macroscopic cracks, supposes an extensive knowledge of all damage-inducing, time-varying boundary conditions of the problem during the simulation time. This also implies high computational costs, as well as important needs for material characterisation. As a complement to these predictive methods, a new approach was undertaken, combining experimental characterisation of crack patterns and numerical simulations of coupled heat and moisture transfer. First, a preliminary study was conducted, consisting of measurements of the water vapour permeability of diffusely damaged construction materials. This allowed identifying the experimental and numerical requirements of the remainder of the work, which aimed at providing measurements of fracture network geometries for their explicit modelling in heat and moisture transfer simulations. Digital image correlation and acoustic emission monitoring were then performed during the degradation of cementitious materials, in order to obtain quantitative data on crack pattern geometries, and to assess the possibilities for damage monitoring at the building scale. The optical technique, along with an appropriate image processing procedure, was found suitable for providing precise measurements of fracture networks. A method was also proposed for the interpretation of acoustic emission recordings in terms of damage quantification, localisation and identification. Then, a new model for coupled heat and moisture modelling in cracked porous media was developed, that allows including such measurements of fracture patterns into a finite element mesh, and simulating flow accordingly. This model was validated on the basis of experimental measurements: digital image correlation was performed during the fracturing of concrete samples, in which moisture uptake was then monitored using X-ray radiography. A good accordance was found between experimental and numerical results in terms of 2-dimensional moisture concentration distributions. The validated code was then used for the simulation of test cases, in order to assess the hygrothermal performance of damaged multi-layered building components subjected to real climatic conditions. The consequences of fractures on the moisture accumulation in walls, on the amplitude of sorption/desorption cycles and on the thermal performance, were observed., Les transferts d'humidité dans les matériaux de construction ont une influence importante sur leur durabilité et sur les performances hygriques et thermiques des bâtiments. De nombreux mécanismes d'endommagement chimiques et physiques de ces matériaux sont en effet dus à l'infiltration d'eau. En conséquence, leur structure poreuse peut évoluer au cours du temps, et des fissures microscopiques comme macroscopiques peuvent s'y développer. La description des matériaux à l'échelle microscopique est cependant une source d'erreur importante dans les codes de simulation actuels des transferts d'humidité et de chaleur, notamment en raison du fait que les milieux sont considérés comme homogènes, et que les effets du vieillissement des matériaux sont négligés. Il importe donc de trouver un moyen d'inclure les effets de l'endommagement dans les simulations de transferts d'humidité et de chaleur à l'échelle du bâtiment. Des méthodes existent pour la prédiction du comportement de milieux soumis à des sollicitations hygriques et mécaniques, mais supposent que l'ensemble des facteurs extérieurs influant sur l'endommagement soient connus tout au long des simulations. Une nouvelle méthodologie a été proposée pour compléter ces approches prédictives, en combinant des mesures expérimentales d'endommagement avec la simulation de transferts couplés d'humidité et de chaleur. Une étude préliminaire a d'abord été menée, consistant à mesurer la perméabilité vapeur équivalente d'éprouvettes de mortier multi-fissurées. Cette démarche a permis d'identifier les besoins expérimentaux et numériques de la suite du travail, visant à modéliser les écoulements dans un réseau discret de fissures sur la base de leur caractérisation. Une méthodologie expérimentale combinant corrélation d'images numériques et émissions acoustiques a ensuite été développée, permettant de disposer de cartographies d'endommagement et de proposer une démarche pour la mesure de réseaux de fissures dans les matériaux de construction en place. La méthode optique, associée à une procédure de traitement d'images, a permis de disposer de données précises de la géométrie de réseaux de fissures. De plus, une méthode a été proposée pour permettre l'interprétation des mesures d'émissions acoustiques en termes de quantification, localisation et identification des phénomènes d'endommagement. Un code de simulation a ensuite été écrit, permettant d'intégrer ces mesures de fissuration dans la modélisation des écoulements couplés d'humidité et de chaleur en milieu poreux. Ce modèle a été validé sur la base de mesures expérimentales : la corrélation d'images numériques a été appliquée durant la fracturation d'éprouvettes de béton, dans lesquelles l'infiltration d'eau a ensuite été suivie par radiographie aux rayons X. Les résultats numériques obtenus sont en bonne conformité avec les mesures expérimentales en termes de prédiction de la concentration d'eau en deux dimensions. Enfin, la méthodologie a été appliquée à une série de cas test, dans le but de modéliser les performances hygrothermiques de parois multi-couches, incluant des matériaux endommagés, soumises à des conditions climatiques réelles. On a ainsi pu estimer les conséquences potentielles de l'endommagement sur l'accumulation d'eau dans des parois, sur l'amplitude des cycles de sorption et de séchage, ainsi que sur les transferts thermiques.

Since boiling heat transfer affords a very effective means to transfer heat, it is implemented in numerous technologies and industries ranging from large power generation plants to micro-electronic thermal management. Although having been a subject of research for several decades, an accurate prediction of boiling heat transfer is still challenging due to the complexity of the coupled mechanisms involved. It appears that the boiling heat transfer coefficient is intimately related to bubble dynamics (i.e. bubble nucleation, growth and detachment) as well as factors such as nucleation site density and interaction between neighbouring and successive bubbles. In order to contribute to the understanding of the boiling phenomenon, an experimental investigation of saturated pool boiling from a single or two neighbouring artificial nucleation sites on a polished copper surface has been performed. The bubble growth dynamics has been characterized for different wall superheats and a experimental growth law has been established. The interaction between successive bubbles from the same nucleation site has been studied, showing the bubble shape oscillations that can be caused by these interactions. The forces acting on a growing bubble has been reviewed, and a complete momentum balance has been made for all stages of bubble growth. The curvature along the interface has been measured, and indications concerning the mechanism of bubble detachment have been suggested. The rise of bubble after detachment has been investigated, and the maximum velocity reached before a change of direction has been estimated and compared to existing models from the literature. The interaction between bubbles growing side by side has been studied: the generation and propagation of a wave front during the coalescence of two bubbles has been highlighted. As boiling heat transfer enhancement techniques are being imagined and developed, this study also focuses on the electrohydrodynamic enhancement technique. Boiling experiments have been performed in the presence of electric fields, and their effects on heat transfer and bubble dynamics have been characterized. Although the volume of the bubbles at detachment and the relationship between the bubble frequency and the wall superheat were not affected, the bubble growth curve was modified. The bubbles were elongated in the direction of the electric field, and this elongation was estimated and compared to other studies from the literature. The rising velocity of the bubble was reduced in the presence of electric field, and the behaviour of bubbles growing side by side was modified, the electric field causing the bubbles to repeal each other. These results, obtained in a fully controlled environment, provide compelling evidence that electric fields can be implemented to alter the bubble dynamics and subsequently heat transfer rates during boiling of dielectric fluids., L’ébullition est un mode de transfert de chaleur très efficace utilisé dans de nombreux systèmes technologiques comme les centrales nucléaires ou refroidissement de micro-électronique. La prédiction des échanges thermiques par ébullition reste actuellement très délicate, en raison de la complexité du phénomène, malgré des décennies de recherche sur le sujet. Le coefficient de transfert thermique est intimement lié à la dynamique de bulles (nucléation des bulles, croissance et détachement) ainsi qu’à des facteurs tels la densité de sites de nucléation ou les interactions entre bulles voisines et successives. La présente étude porte sur l’ébullition saturée sur un site de nucléation artificiel unique (ou deux sites voisins) sur une paroi en cuivre poli. La dynamique de croissance des bulles a été caractérisée pour différentes surchauffes de paroi et une loi expérimentale de croissance a été établie. Les interactions entre bulles successives issues du même site ont été étudiées, montrant qu’elles peuvent provoquer des oscillations de la bulle en croissance. Les forces agissant sur une bulle en croissance ont été clairement définies, et un bilan de quantité de mouvement a été réalisé à tous les stades de la croissance d’une bulle. La courbure le long de l’interface a été mesurée, ce qui a permis de mieux saisir le mécanisme de détachement de la bulle. L’ascension d’une bulle après son détachement a été analysée, et la vitesse maximale atteinte avant un changement de direction a été estimée et comparée aux modèles existants dans la littérature. L’interaction entre bulles croissant côte à côte a été étudiée. La génération et la propagation d’une onde lors de la coalescence a été mise en évidence. Dans le contexte de travaux de recherche sur des techniques d’intensification des échanges thermiques, cette étude se penche particulièrement sur l’intensification par électrohydrodynamique. Des expériences d’ébullition ont été réalisées en présence de champs électriques, et leurs effets sur les transferts thermiques et sur la dynamique des bulles ont été analysés. Bien que le volume au détachement des bulles et la relation entre la fréquence et la surchauffe reste inchangées, la courbe de croissance des bulles est modifiée. Les bulles sont allongées dans la direction du champ électrique, et cette élongation a été estimée et comparée à d’autres résultats de la littérature. La vitesse d’ascension des bulles est réduite en présence de champs électriques, et les interactions de bulles voisines sont modifiées: il s’avère qu’en présence de champs électriques les bulles ont tendance à se repousser. Ces résultats, obtenus dans un environnement parfaitement contrôlé apportent la preuve que la présence de champs électriques modifie la dynamique des bulles et par conséquents les transferts thermiques associés.

With the advent of low-energy buildings, the need for accurate building performance simulations has significantly increased. However, for the time being, the thermo-aeraulic effects are often taken into account through simplified or even empirical models, which fail to provide the expected accuracy. Resorting to computational fluid dynamics seems therefore unavoidable, but the required computational effort is in general prohibitive. The joint use of innovative approaches such as the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and massively parallel computing devices such as graphics processing units (GPUs) could help to overcome these limits. The present research work is devoted to explore the potential of such a strategy. The lattice Boltzmann method, which is based on a discretised version of the Boltzmann equation, is an explicit approach offering numerous attractive features: accuracy, stability, ability to handle complex geometries, etc. It is therefore an interesting alternative to the direct solving of the Navier-Stokes equations using classic numerical analysis. From an algorithmic standpoint, the LBM is well-suited for parallel implementations. The use of graphics processors to perform general purpose computations is increasingly widespread in high performance computing. These massively parallel circuits provide up to now unrivalled performance at a rather moderate cost. Yet, due to numerous hardware induced constraints, GPU programming is quite complex and the possible benefits in performance depend strongly on the algorithmic nature of the targeted application. For LBM, GPU implementations currently provide performance two orders of magnitude higher than a weakly optimised sequential CPU implementation. The present thesis consists of a collection of nine articles published in international journals and proceedings of international conferences (the last one being under review). These contributions address the issues related to single-GPU implementations of the LBM and the optimisation of memory accesses, as well as multi-GPU implementations and the modelling of inter-GPU and internode communication. In addition, we outline several extensions to the LBM, which appear essential to perform actual building thermo-aeraulic simulations. The test cases we used to validate our codes account for the strong potential of GPU LBM solvers in practice., Avec l'émergence des bâtiments à haute efficacité énergétique, il est devenu indispensable de pouvoir prédire de manière fiable le comportement énergétique des bâtiments. Or, à l'heure actuelle, la prise en compte des effets thermo-aérauliques dans les modèles se cantonne le plus souvent à l'utilisation d'approches simplifiées voire empiriques qui ne sauraient atteindre la précision requise. Le recours à la simulation numérique des écoulements semble donc incontournable, mais il est limité par un coût calculatoire généralement prohibitif. L'utilisation conjointe d'approches innovantes telle que la méthode de Boltzmann sur gaz réseau (LBM) et d'outils de calcul massivement parallèles comme les processeurs graphiques (GPU) pourrait permettre de s'affranchir de ces limites. Le présent travail de recherche s'attache à en explorer les potentialités. La méthode de Boltzmann sur gaz réseau, qui repose sur une forme discrétisée de l'équation de Boltzmann, est une approche explicite qui jouit de nombreuses qualités : précision, stabilité, prise en compte de géométries complexes, etc. Elle constitue donc une alternative intéressante à la résolution directe des équations de Navier-Stokes par une méthode numérique classique. De par ses caractéristiques algorithmiques, elle se révèle bien adaptée au calcul parallèle. L'utilisation de processeurs graphiques pour mener des calculs généralistes est de plus en plus répandue dans le domaine du calcul intensif. Ces processeurs à l'architecture massivement parallèle offrent des performances inégalées à ce jour pour un coût relativement modéré. Néanmoins, nombre de contraintes matérielles en rendent la programmation complexe et les gains en termes de performances dépendent fortement de la nature de l'algorithme considéré. Dans le cas de la LBM, les implantations GPU affichent couramment des performances supérieures de deux ordres de grandeur à celle d'une implantation CPU séquentielle faiblement optimisée. Le mémoire de thèse présenté est constitué d'un ensemble de neuf articles de revues internationales et d'actes de conférences internationales (le dernier étant en cours d'évaluation). Dans ces travaux sont abordés les problématiques liées tant à l'implantation mono-GPU de la LBM et à l'optimisation des accès en mémoire, qu'aux implantations multi-GPU et à la modélisation des communications inter-GPU et inter-nœuds. En complément, sont détaillées diverses extensions à la LBM indispensables pour envisager une utilisation en thermo-aéraulique des bâtiments. Les cas d'études utilisés pour la validation des codes permettent de juger du fort potentiel de cette approche en pratique.

Currently, improving energy efficiency becomes a main challenge for all industrial energy systems. This challenge involves an improved recovery of wasted heat generated by several industrial processes. Large energy savings and potential environmental benefits are associated with the use of industrial heat pump mainly at high temperature levels (>130°C) unavailable on the market. The development of high temperature heat pump using water vapor as working fluid is investigated. Technical problems restraining the feasibility of this industrial heat pump are surmounted by a specifically designed heat pump, the development of a new twin screw compressor and a new centrifugal compressor with magnetic bearings. A dynamic model of this heat pump is developed using Modelica and taking into account the presence of non-condensable gases in the machine. Detailed models of the compressors are developed based on their geometrical characteristics. Experimental results of the start-up phase have been presented showing the non-condensable purging process and the evolution of some parameters of the heat pump. These experimental results have been confronted to numerical simulations. Several scenarios of industrial processes for high-temperature heat recovery and heat upgrading are numerically simulated and analyzed based on energetic and exergetic studies. The heat pump model has been integrated to a distillation column showing the global energy savings and the environmental benefits of using this developed heat pump., Le contexte énergétique global impose, durablement aux industriels la poursuite des efforts en matière d’efficacité énergétique nécessitant le déploiement de nouveaux procédés innovants éco-efficaces. Une meilleure gestion de l’énergie permet l’amélioration de l’efficacité énergétique globale des procédés ainsi que la réduction des émissions de CO2. Dans ces conditions, la récupération et la valorisation de la chaleur perdue apparait comme un potentiel pour atteindre ces objectifs. L’intégration d’une pompe à chaleur à haute température permet une valorisation de pertes calorifiques en satisfaisant des besoins de chauffage à haute température (>130°C) qui apparaissent simultanément dans certains procédés (distillation, séchage…). Malheureusement, les pompes à chaleur répondant à ces besoins industriels sont indisponibles actuellement. C’est dans ce contexte que s’inscrit la présente étude qui a permis le développement et la mise en place d’une pompe à chaleur à haute température utilisant l’eau comme fluide frigorigène. Les verrous techniques et technologiques limitant la faisabilité d’une telle machine ont été levés en concevant une nouvelle architecture de PAC et en développant deux types de compresseur : un compresseur bi-vis adapté et un compresseur centrifuge bi-étagé à paliers magnétiques. La mise en place de cette PAC munie du compresseur bi-vis est présentée. Un modèle dynamique de cette pompe à chaleur est développé avec Modelica en tenant compte de la présence de gaz incondensables dans la machine. Des modèles détaillés des compresseurs sont développés en fonction de leurs caractéristiques géométriques. Une étude expérimentale de la phase de démarrage est présentée montrant le processus de purge des incondensables et l'évolution de certains paramètres de la pompe à chaleur. Ces résultats expérimentaux ont été confrontés à des simulations numériques. Plusieurs modes de fonctionnement de la machine de récupération des pertes calorifiques sont simulés numériquement et analysés énergétiquement ainsi qu’exergétiquement. Le modèle de pompe à chaleur a enfin été intégré à un modèle de colonne à distiller montrant les économies d'énergie globales et les avantages environnementaux obtenus.

The evolution of fuel injection strategies in automobile engines has brought about new problem sets in their design and optimization. Among these, is the deposition of liquid fuel on the inner walls of the combustion chamber, impacting the environmental performance of the engine. Indeed, evaporation of the liquid film near the wall can significantly influence combustion. The aim of this work was to develop a controllable experimental configuration along with the necessary diagnostics for a first phenomenological analysis of the behaviour and evaporation of a liquid fuel film deposited on a wall as it interacts with gas phase combustion. The chosen experimental approach allowed the generation a liquid film of heptane on a vertical wall that is positioned within an upward flowing lean premixed methane/air mixture with a rod stabilised oblique V-flame. In parallel, a low coherence interferometry diagnostic system was developed to study the properties of the heptane film, permitting simultaneous measurements of the local wall temperature and film thickness in the presence of a reacting flow. Initially, the properties of the film and its evaporation were studied under non reacting conditions in a counter-current gas flow configuration. Several typical trends were identified and analyzed. In the presence of the flame, the change in physical mechanisms that influence the evaporation and behaviour of the film was evaluated by comparing results to the non reacting case. Phenomenological analysis was then conducted on the impact of film evaporation within the velocity boundary layer on the properties of the flame front. A retroactive effect of the flame front on the mass transfer of heptane gas was observed and a significant spatial variation of reaction zones reported., L'évolution des stratégies d'injection du combustible dans les moteurs automobiles a fait apparaître de nouvelles problématiques. Parmi celles-ci, l'existence d'un dépôt de carburant sur les parois de la chambre de combustion a un impact sur les performances environnementales du moteur. En effet, l'évaporation de ce film liquide en proche paroi ne peut qu'influencer de manière sensible la phase de combustion. L'objectif de ce travail était de mettre en place une configuration académique maîtrisée et les diagnostics nécessaires à une première analyse phénoménologique du comportement et de l'évaporation d'un film liquide combustible déposé sur une paroi interagissant avec la combustion en phase gazeuse. L'approche expérimentale choisie a permis de générer un dépôt d'heptane liquide contrôlé sur une paroi verticale. Celle-ci est positionnée dans un écoulement ascendant de prémélange air/méthane dans lequel une flamme oblique est stabilisée sur un barreau. En parallèle, un diagnostic de mesure a été développé pour étudier les propriétés du film. Ce système d'interférométrie à faible cohérence a permis de réaliser une mesure locale simultanée de la température de paroi et de l'épaisseur du film en présence de l'écoulement réactif. Dans un premier temps, l'étude de configurations non réactives a permis de préciser les caractéristiques du film et de son évaporation, lorsque celui-ci s'écoule à contre-courant de l'écoulement gazeux. Plusieurs comportements types ont été mis en évidence et analysés. En présence de la flamme, une première approche a été consacrée à l'évolution des mécanismes qui influencent l'évaporation du film et son comportement par rapport au cas non réactif. Enfin, une analyse phénoménologique de l'impact de l'évaporation au sein de la couche limite sur les caractéristiques du front de flamme a été menée. Celle-ci a permis de mettre en évidence l'effet rétroactif de ce dernier sur le mélange des vapeurs, et une forte diversité des zones réactionnelles dans l'espace.

Interest in thermal properties of nanostructuredmaterials is growing. These materials are designed to be included in microelectronic devices and micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) whose behavior and reliability depend strongly on the dissipation of generated heat. Multilayer materials dielectric/metal are good candidates for thermoelectric conversion and their use is considered to reduce the maximum temperatures in microelectronic systems. The decrease in the thickness of the layers reduces the thermal conductivity, leading to a larger figure of merit of thermoelectric conversion. This decreasing is due to the decrease of intrinsic thermal conductivity of each layer when the thickness decreases to the dimensions of the same order of magnitude as the mean free path of heat carriers and bigger influence of the interface conductance. Predicting the thermal conductivity of such systems therefore requires a reliable simulation of heat transfer at interfaces. Molecular dynamics is a tool particularly well suited to this type of study. However the simulation results depend strongly on interatomic potentials used. The comparison of properties predicted using different interatomic potentials with experimental results validates the potential for predicting the properties concerned. In the first chapter, the mathematical functions and parameters used in the interatomic potentials are explained. In the second chapter, the objective is to propose a methodology to select the most appropriate potential for studying heat transfer. This methodology is illustrated for Si, the semiconductor most used in microelectronic devices and MEMS as well as for Au, Ag and Cu which are the metals most often seen. The thermal conductivity of bulk Si is calculated using the nonequilibrium molecular dynamics with three potential among the five previously evaluated to confirm this assessment. The system dielectric/metal that has been most studied with molecular dynamics but also experimentally is certainly the system Si/Au. The Cu and Ag films on oriented Si substrates are in the main combinations of large-scale integrated circuits. A parametrisation of MEAM cross-potential is developed to calculate interactions Si/Au, Si/Ag and Si/Cu in the third part of this work. The cross-potentials are used to predict the interfacial thermal conductance and to predict the density of states curves for the interfaces Si/Au Si/Ag and Si/Cu., L’intérêt pour les propriétés thermiques de matériaux nanostructurés est croissant. Ces matériaux sont conçus pour être inclus dans les dispositifs micro-électroniques et les systèmes micro électromécaniques (MEMS) dont le comportement et la fiabilité dépendent fortement de l’évacuation de la chaleur générée. Les matériaux multicouches diélectrique/métal sont de bons candidats pour la conversion thermoélectrique et leur utilisation est envisagée pour diminuer les températures maximales dans les systèmes microélectroniques. La diminution de l’épaisseur des couches permet de diminuer la conductivité thermique, conduisant à un plus grand facteur de mérite de conversion thermoélectrique. Cette diminution est due à la diminution de la conductivité thermique intrinsèque de chaque couche lorsque leur épaisseur décroit jusqu’à des dimensions du même ordre de grandeur que le libre parcours moyen des porteurs de chaleur et à l’influence croissante de la conductance d’interface. La prédiction de la conductivité thermique de tels systèmes passe donc par une simulation fiable du transfert de chaleur aux interfaces. La dynamique moléculaire (DM) est un outil particulièrement bien adapté à ce type d’études. Cependant les résultats des simulations dépendent fortement des potentiels interatomiques utilisés. La comparaison des propriétés prédites à l’aide des différents potentiels interatomiques avec les valeurs expérimentales permet de valider les potentiels pour prédire les propriétés concernées. Dans le premier chapitre, les fonctions mathématiques et les paramètres utilisés dans les potentiels interatomiques sont explicités. Dans le deuxième chapitre, l’objectif est de proposer une méthodologie pour sélectionner les potentiels les plus appropriés pour les études de transfert de chaleur. Cette méthodologie est illustrée pour le Si qui est le semi-conducteur le plus utilisé au sein de dispositifs microélectroniques et MEMS ainsi que pour l’Au, l’Ag et le Cu qui sont les métaux les plus souvent considérés. La conductivité thermique du Si massif est calculée, en utilisant la dynamique moléculaire hors d’équilibre (DMNE) avec trois potentiels parmi les cinq évalués précédemment pour valider cette évaluation. Le système diélectrique/métal qui a été le plus étudié avec la dynamique moléculaire mais également de manière expérimentale jusqu’à présent est certainement le système Si/Au. Les films de Cu et Ag sur des substrats de Si orienté sont les principales combinaisons dans les circuits intégrés de grande échelle. Une paramétrisation du potentiel de type MEAM est développée pour calculer les interactions Si/Au, Si/Ag et Si/Cu dans la troisième partie de ce travail. Les potentiels croisés sont utilisés pour prédire la conductance d’interface et développer les courbes de densité d’états pour les interfaces Si/Au Si/Ag et Si/Cu.

The introduction of new low capacity absorption chillers opens new prospects for the multifunction multisource solar systems (MFSSYS) which exploit the full potential of the solar energy for heating, cooling and production of domestic hot water (DHW) purposes. The solar combisystems (SCS), which preceded the MFSSYS, lacked an adapted procedure for the sizing of their main components: the solar collector and the solar thermal storage tank. From the point of view of the energy and investment cost, a sizing method based on the peak load may fail if the energy source is not guaranteed to be stable. An optimization of the main components by simulation may be then a key solution for an optimal sizing of the MFSSYS. An initial hydraulic schematic is elaborated for the MFSSYS based on information found in the literature about the SCS and the data made available by the chiller manufacture. The modeling of this schematic is complex as redundant simulation and modification were necessary in order to eliminate the potential problems of solution convergence. From this experience, a method of simulation aided design is elaborated. Parametric runs were carried out on the MFSSYS model. They offer needed information for the comparison of the optimization algorithms which are tested later on. The outcome of these parametric runs is a response surface which represents the cost of the MFSSYS as a function of the solar collector surface area and the volume of the solar thermal storage tank. In order to reduce the number of simulations required by a complete parametric runs method, the use of optimization algorithm become a necessity. An optimization algorithm based on the design of experiments (OptDOE) is developed; its performance is compared with the one of a hybrid optimization algorithm in two cases: a reference function of Rosenbrock and the model of the MFSSYS. Compared to the hybrid optimization algorithm, OptDOE has showed good performance. The number of simulations is reduced and the optimized values, found by this method, are close to those of the parametric runs. The main advantage of OptDOE is to describe the behavior of the cost function in the neighborhood of the optimum. This information is valuable especially when the cost function has a valley-like form, which is the case for the systems we studied. In this case, the cost has approximately the same value for a large variation range of the optimized parameters., L’introduction des nouvelles machines frigorifiques à absorption des petites puissances ouvre des nouvelles perspectives pour les systèmes solaires multifonction multi-source (SYSMFS) qui exploitent le potentiel de l’énergie solaire pour le chauffage, le refroidissement et la préparation de l’eau chaude sanitaire (ECS). Les systèmes solaires combinés (SSC), qui ont précédés les SYSMFS, manquaient néanmoins une procédure adaptée pour le dimensionnement de leurs composants principaux : le panneau solaire et le ballon solaire de stockage thermique. De point de vue de l’énergie et du coût d’investissement et d’exploitation, une méthode de dimensionnement basée sur le pic de charge ne conviendrait pas si la source d’énergie n’est pas garantie d’être stable dans le temps. Une optimisation des composants principaux par la simulation peut être alors une solution clef pour le dimensionnement optimal de SYSMFS. À partir des informations sur les SSC trouvées dans la littérature et celles de fabricant de la machine frigorifique, un schéma hydraulique initial a été élaboré pour un SYSMFS. La modélisation de ce schéma est complexe car des simulations et des modifications répétitives ont été nécessaires pour éliminer les problèmes potentiels de convergence de la solution. A partir de cette expérience, une méthodologie de conception assistée par simulation a été élaborée afin d’en profiter pour des modélisations similaires. En tant que telle, le modèle devrait être prêt pour la phase l’optimisation. Une étude paramétrique a été menée sur le modèle SYSMFS ; elle offre les donnés requises pour la comparaison des algorithmes d’optimisation qui sont testés par la suite. Le résultat de cette étude est une surface de réponse qui représente le coût du SYSMFS en fonction de la superficie du panneau solaire et du volume de stockage thermique du ballon solaire. Pour réduire le nombre des simulations requis par une étude paramétrique complète, l’utilisation d’un algorithme d’optimisation est nécessaire. Un algorithme basé sur le plan d’expérience (OptDOE) a été développé et sa performance est comparée avec celles d’un algorithme d’optimisation hybride sur une fonction de référence de Rosenbrock et sur le modèle SYSMFS. Comparé à l’algorithme hybride, OptDOE a montré une bonne performance. Le nombre de simulations est réduit et les valeurs optimales trouvées, par cette méthode, sont porches de celles de l’étude paramétrique L’OptDOE permet également de décrire le comportement du modèle SYSMFS au voisinage de l’optimum avec une fonction coût approximée. Cette information est importante surtout au cas où la fonction coût a la forme d’une vallée. Dans ce cas, des valeurs différentes de l’optimum donnent presque le même coût global.

International audience; Tore Supra routinely addresses the physics and technology of very long-duration plasma discharges, thus bringing precious information on critical issues of long pulse operation of ITER. A new ITER relevant lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) launcher has allowed coupling to the plasma a power level of 2.7 MW for 78 s, corresponding to a power density close to the design value foreseen for an ITER LHCD system. In accordance with the expectations, long distance (10 cm) power coupling has been obtained. Successive stationary states of the plasma current pro le have been controlled in real-time featuring (i) control of sawteeth with varying plasma parameters, (ii) obtaining and sustaining a `hot core' plasma regime, (iii) recovery from a voluntarily triggered deleterious magnetohydrodynamic regime. The scrape-off layer (SOL) parameters and power deposition have been documented during L-mode ramp-up phase, a crucial point for ITER before the X-point formation. Disruption mitigation studies have been conducted with massive gas injection, evidencing the difference between He and Ar and the possible role of the q = 2 surface in limiting the gas penetration. ICRF assisted wall conditioning in the presence of magnetic eld has been investigated, culminating in the demonstration that this conditioning scheme allows one to recover normal operation after disruptions. The effect of the magnetic eld ripple on the intrinsic plasma rotation has been studied, showing the competition between turbulent transport processes and ripple toroidal friction. During dedicated dimensionless experiments, the effect of varying the collisionality on turbulence wavenumber spectra has been documented, giving new insight into the turbulence mechanism. Turbulence measurements have also allowed quantitatively comparing experimental results with predictions by 5D gyrokinetic codes: numerical results simultaneously match the magnitude of effective heat diffusivity, rms values of density uctuations and wavenumber spectra. A clear correlation between electron temperature gradient and impurity transport in the very core of the plasma has been observed, strongly suggesting the existence of a threshold above which transport is dominated by turbulent electron modes. Dynamics of edge turbulent uctuations has been studied by correlating data from fast imaging cameras and Langmuir probes, yielding a coherent picture of transport processes involved in the SOL.

The combined efforts promoting an improved insulation and a growth of renewable energies use in buildings play a key role in the road towards greenhouse gas reduction and better energy efficiency. This thesis purpose is to develop a chemicalbased thermal energy storage system devoted to solar space heating of single-family houses. A specific heat storage material has thus been created, made of zeolite and magnesium sulphate. The storage principle, based on a hybrid phenomenon between water vapour physical adsorption and chemical hydration reaction, is seasonal : during the summer, the material stores heat obtained from evacuated tube solar collectors using an endothermic dehydration reaction ; the stored heat is released by rehydration of the material during the winter to produce hot air dedicated to space heating. After a state of the art regarding thermal energy storage technologies, a preparation method is set up. Then, characterization studies of this innovative composite material have been performed, at both micro- and macroscopic scales. Thanks to the macroscopic experimental data, the system size is estimated to meet the space heating energy demand of a low energy single-family house. Afterwards, a thermochemical storage model is developed to understand the coupled heat and mass transfer occurring in the composite sorbent bed, and consequently optimize the reactor design. The model relevancy is finally discussed with respect to experimental results., Les actions conjointes en faveur d’une meilleure isolation du bâti et de l’expansion des énergies renouvelables dans l’habitat jouent un rôle de premier plan dans la politique de réduction des gaz à effet de serre et la recherche d’une plus grande efficacité énergétique. La présente thèse vise à développer un système de stockage de chaleur par voie thermochimique dédié au chauffage solaire d’une maison individuelle. A cet effet, un matériau de stockage spécifique à été mis au point, à base de zéolithe et de sulfate de magnésium. Le principe, reposant sur un phénomène mixte d’adsorption physique de vapeur d’eau et de réaction chimique d’hydratation, est à caractère inter-saisonnier : en été, la chaleur issue de capteurs solaires thermiques à air est stockée par le matériau, qui se déshydrate selon une réaction endothermique ; en hiver, l’exothermicité de la réaction inverse est exploitée afin de chauffer l’habitat. Après un état de l’art des technologies de stockage thermique, un protocole de préparation de ce matériau composite innovant est établi. Des travaux de caractérisation sont alors entrepris à l’échelle micro et macroscopique. A partir de ces données expérimentales macroscopiques, le système de stockage est dimensionné en fonction des besoins en chaleur pour le chauffage d’une maison individuelle de type Bâtiment Basse Consommation. A l’issue de cette étude, un modèle de réacteur de stockage thermique est élaboré, afin d’interpréter les transferts couplés de matière et de chaleur intervenant dans le lit de matériau et d’optimiser le réacteur de stockage en conséquence. La validité du modèle est ensuite testée et discutée à la lumière des résultats expérimentaux.

Nowak et al. argue that inclusive fitness theory has been of little value in explaining the natural world, and that it has led to negligible progress in explaining the evolution of eusociality. However, we believe that their arguments are based upon a misunderstanding of evolutionary theory and a misrepresentation of the empirical literature. We will focus our comments on three general issues.

In polymer processing, control of thermal regulation appears as one of the most relevant ways to increase the productivity of processes and to enhance the quality of products. In the framework of the development of numerical tools dedicated to mold cooling optimization, the purpose of this work is twofold. Firstly, in order to describe the thermal behavior of semicrystalline polymers during the cooling stage and the influence of this stage on the material‘s final microstructure and properties, a numerical model of crystallization under nonisothermal flows is developed. The 1st invariant of the extra-stress tensor, resulting from the viscoelastic behavior of the polymer, is considered as the driving force of flow induced nucleation added to the thermally induced nucleation. The growth of the nuclei is described by two sets of Schneider equations. The model is then applied to the nonisothermal crystallization of an isotactic polypropylene in a shear flow configuration (Couette flow). Thermal and rheological effects on crystallization are quantified in terms of kinetics enhancement and final morphological distribution (type, density and average size of crystallites). Secondly, the heat transfer measurement techniques used for mold cooling optimization must be accurate, reliable and compliant with the constraints of the process. A new thermal instrumentation technique is implemented and tested as a heat flux sensor integrated to a mold insert. The aim is to evaluate the local heat transfer between the polymer and the mold wall. The influence of the process parameters on the sensor response is analyzed. The “thermal footprints” of the process are used to validate a simplified heat transfer model of the cooling stage., En plasturgie, la maîtrise de la régulation thermique des outillages apparaît aujourd'hui comme une des composantes essentielles de l'amélioration de la productivité des procédés et de la qualité des produits. S'inscrivant dans le contexte du développement d'outils numériques dédiés à l'optimisation de la «fonction refroidissement» des outillages, ce travail répond à deux besoins. Le premier est la nécessité de disposer d'un modèle précis du comportement thermique des polymères semi-cristallins au cours du refroidissement et de l'influence de cette phase sur la microstructure du matériau, conditionnant ses propriétés finales. Un modèle numérique de la cristallisation d'un polymère soumis à un écoulement anisotherme est développé. Le 1er invariant du tenseur des extracontraintes, représentatif du comportement rhéologique viscoélastique du matériau, est considéré comme la force motrice d'une germination additionnelle s'ajoutant à la germination induite par la thermique. La croissance de ces germes est décrite par deux systèmes d'équations de Schneider. Le modèle est ensuite appliqué la cristallisation d'un polypropylène isotactique dans un écoulement de cisaillement (écoulement de Couette). Les effets thermiques et rhéologiques sur la cristallisation sont alors quantifiés en termes d'accélération de la cinétique et de répartition morphologique finale (type, densité et tailles moyennes des cristallites). D'autre part, l'optimisation des performances thermiques des outillages fait appel à des techniques de mesure du transfert de chaleur précises, fiables et adaptées aux contraintes du procédé, dans le but d'alimenter et de valider les simulations numériques. Une technologie innovante d'instrumentation thermique est mise en oeuvre sur un moule d'injection, sous forme d'un insert fluxmétrique, afin d'évaluer localement les transferts de chaleur entre le polymère et l'outillage. L'influence des conditions d'injection sur la réponse du capteur est analysée. Les « signatures thermiques » du procédé ainsi obtenues permettent de valider un modèle simplifié des transferts thermiques lors de la phase de refroidissement

The present work is devoted to an investigation of the physical mechanisms involved in flat plate heat pipes (FPHP). FPHPs are passive devices able to transfer high heat fluxes with low temperature differences owing to phase change heat transfer andcapillarity. Two FPHPs made of copper have been studied. Their capillary structures consist of longitudinal and crossed grooves respectively. The FPHPs are hermetically sealed with a transparent plate inorder to visualize physical phenomena that occur inside. Wall temperature profiles are recorded with thermistors, while the shape of the liquid-vapor interface is characterised by means of a confocal microscope. Visualizations by high speed camera show that nucleate boiling occurs in the evaporator for heat fluxes greater than 3 W.cm-2. Boiling improves heat transfer in the system and does not prevent the FPHP operation, contrarily to what is usually assumed in the literature. The impact of the filling ratio and of the vapor space thickness onthe performance of the system has been experimentally and theoretically studied for the FPHP with longitudinal grooves. An original experimental method has been developed in order to determine the curvature of the liquid-vapour interface in the capillary structure made of crossed grooves.Experimental results have been compared to the results of thermal and hydrodynamic models, previously developed in the laboratory., Le travail présenté dans ce mémoire concerne l'étude phénoménologique de diffuseurs thermiques diphasiques (DTD). Les DTD, aussi appelés caloducs plats, sont des systèmes passifs permettant de transférer une grande quantité de chaleur avec un faible gradient de température grâce au transfert avec changement de phase et aux phénomènes de capillarité. Deux DTD en cuivre, dont les structures capillaires sont composées soit de rainures longitudinales, soit de rainures croisées, ont été étudiés. Les DTD sont hermétiquement fermés avec une plaque transparente permettant la visualisation des phénomènes à l'intérieur du système. Le profil de température sur la paroi est mesuré à l'aide de thermistances tandis que la forme de l'interface liquide-vapeur dans la structure capillaire est caractérisée grâce à un microscope confocal. Des observations par caméra rapide ont permis de montrer que l'ébullition nucléée apparaît à l'évaporateur pour des flux thermiques supérieurs à 3 W/cm². L'ébullition améliore les échanges thermiques et n'empêche pas le fonctionnement du système, contrairement à ce qui est annoncé dans la littérature. L'influence de la charge en liquide et de l'épaisseur de l'espace vapeur sur la limite capillaire du système a été étudiée expérimentalement et théoriquement dans le cas du DTD à rainures longitudinales. Une méthode expérimentale originale a été mise en œuvre pour déterminer la courbure de l'interface liquide-vapeur dans la structure capillaire à rainures croisées. Les résultats issus des études expérimentales des deux DTD ont été comparés à ceux issus de modèles numériques thermique et hydrodynamique précédemment développés au laboratoire

Wooden frame houses are very sensitive to air and moisture flows. Recent studies showed that such flows can seriously affect the quality and durability of buildings. \par After a brief description of the physics of heat and mass transfers, we present the experimental set-up that was built for this study. It consists in a wooden frame house, exposed to natural outdoor climate, and its dimensions are representative of real-life constructions. This test house was instrumented so as to study the hygrothermal behaviour of both the walls and the main room. The weather data is recorded on site. We studied several configurations: walls with and without vapour-barrier; indoor climate with or without heating, humidification, mechanical ventilation. The air permeability of the test house was also determined. Finally, the characterization of the materials used in the test house has begun. In parallel to this experimental investigation, a numerical model of the test house was developped, based on the existing model HAM-tools. The model is tested on several experimental sequences. The assessment of the validity of the model was carried out step by step : first the validation of the transfers within the walls, then the coupling with the air zone, last the cladding model. We present the results of the comparison between the measurements and the numerical simulations, and discuss of the validity of the model and of the limitations due to the experimental set-up. This study showed the effect of thermal sollicitations on the hygric behaviour of a wall containing a hygroscopic material, and the ability of the model to describe it., Les maisons à ossature bois sont des structures particulièrement sensibles aux flux d'air et d'humidité. Des études récentes ont montré que de telles sollicitations peuvent dégrader la qualité et la durabilité d'un bâtiment. Après avoir décrit la physique des transferts couplés d'énergie et de masse, nous présentons le support expérimental de cette étude : une maison à ossature bois, de dimensions représentatives d'une construction réelle, qui a été construite sur une plate-forme d'exposition en extérieur. Cette cellule expérimentale a été instrumentée afin d'étudier le comportement hygrothermique des parois et de la pièce principale. Les données météorologiques sont relevées sur le site même. Plusieurs configurations ont été étudiées dans le cadre de ces travaux : parois avec et sans pare-vapeur ; climat interne avec ou sans chauffage, humidification ou ventilation. Des mesures de perméabilité à l'air de la cellule ont également été effectuées. Enfin, une campagne de détermination des caractéristiques des matériaux employés a été lancée. En parallèle de cette expérimentation, un modèle numérique de la cellule a été développé, basé sur le modèle existant HAM-tools. Le modèle est utilisé sur plusieurs séquences expérimentales. L'étude de la validité du modèle s'est faite par étapes : d'abord la paroi seule, puis couplée avec la zone, enfin le modèle de bardage. Nous présentons les résultats de la comparaison entre les mesures et les simulations numériques, et discutons de la validité du modèle et des limites imposées par l'expérimentation. Cette étude a notamment permis de mettre en évidence l'effet de sollicitations thermiques sur le comportement hygrique d'une paroi comportant un matériau hygroscopique, et montré la capacité du modèle développé à le décrire.

Superinsulating materials are currently of interest in order to reduce CO2 emissions. In this study, we aim at modeling the radiative transfer in nanoporous silica matrices that are the principal components of nanoporous superinsulating materials. Samples are elaborated and are optically characterized on the wavelength range [250~nm ; 20~mm]. Then, we deduce their radiative properties using a parameter identification technique. As the considered media are made of packed quasi-spherical nanoparticles, we model their radiative properties using the Mie theory. Using the notion of representative scatterer, we get a satisfactory agreement on a wide part of the spectra, but in the small wavelength range (\(\lambda\) smaller than 1~\(\mu\)m), since the Mie theory does not take into account the structure of the aggregates. So we have developed a code based on the Discrete Dipole Approximation that improves the modeling results, basing our computations on aggregates generated using various algorithms., Les superisolants thermiques sont largement étudiés car il permettraient de réduire les émissions de $\mathrm{CO}_2$. Nous voulons modéliser les propriétés radiatives de matrices nanoporeuses de silice qui sont les composants majeurs de ces matériaux. Des échantillons ont été fabriqués puis caractérisés sur la plage de longueur d'onde [250~nm ; 20~mm]. Nous avons ensuite calculé leurs propriétés radiatives avec une méthode inverse. Les échantillons étant constitués de particules quasisphériques, nous avons modélisé leurs propriétés radiatives avec la théorie de Mie. La notion de diffuseur représentatif nous permet d'obtenir un accord satisfaisant sur l'ensemble de la plage de longueurs d'onde étudié, sauf aux petites longueurs d'onde (\(\lambda \leq 1\, \mu \mathrm{m}\)) car la théorie de Mie ne peut pas prendre en compte la structure des agrégats. Nous avons donc développé un code basé sur l'approximation dipolaire discrète qui améliore les résultats, les calculs se basant sur des agrégats générés avec différents algorithmes.

International audience; The combination of renewable energy sources into the power system network has been growing rapidly in recent decades. As a consequence, there have been thoughtful concerns over the consistent and acceptable working of the electrical power systems. One of the elucidations being recommended to expand the dependability and functioning of this power system network is to join together with energy storage devices. The battery storage device may possibly be used for increasing the profit margin of solar or wind farm proprietors. This chapter discusses the present state of battery energy storage technology and its economic viability which impacts the power system network. Further, a discussion on the integration of the battery storage technology to the grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) is made.

International audience; As the world’s population grows, current agricultural activities are putting enormous strain on the climate, including deforestation, excessive water use, and pesticide runoffs. These stresses are expected to increase in the coming future as more food products are needed. One promising method to reduce the adverse impact on the environment is greenhouse-based farming, which can enhance land-use efficiency and water consumption. The major limitation of the greenhouse is the high energy demand in a constrained space. Solar energy has shown a promising approach for integration with agricultural greenhouses in recent years. The developments of greenhouses integrated with various solar energy technologies including photovoltaic (PV), photovoltaic-thermal (PVT), and solar thermal collectors are discussed in this chapter. The results indicated that PV modules installed on greenhouse roofs or walls cause shading and, in some cases, have affected the growth trend of cultivated crops inside. The PVT modules are more efficient at producing both heat and electricity, while higher performance values are reported for greenhouses integrated with solar thermal collectors especially in moderate climate conditions. Additionally, storing thermal energy has shown an improvement in the profitability of solar greenhouses by extending the period of solar heat availability. Also, the most commonly used mathematical models describing the thermal behavior of solar greenhouses as well as their economics are explored and discussed. In the end, various commercial solar greenhouse implemented around the world are introduced.

To better predict the effective energy performance of buildings in cities, this study addresses the modelling of local external radiative, thermal and aeraulic conditions. After reviewing existing modelling approaches that are suitable for estimating the building boundary conditions in energy simulation, this paper analyses external conditions derived from a building energy model (BuildSysPro) or a microclimatic model (SOLENE microclimat). Comparisons are made for the different faces of a generic building standing alone or located in an urban environment, with or without a thermally efficient envelope. When the modelling approach is adjusted, the results highlight significant deviations on the estimated radiative temperatures and wind-based quantities around the isolated building. When accounting for surrounding buildings, the results show a substantial reduction in short-wave radiative fluxes, which is explained by an imbalance between solar masks and multireflections, and a reduction in the wind-driven ventilation potential.
