Abstract

Different framings of food may shape food policies and their impact. Despite acknowledging food systems’ complexities, the European Commission’s Farm to Fork Strategy still addresses food as a commodity instead of a human right or common good. A report from the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA) to the European Commission recently concluded that the path to a more sustainable food system requires “moving from food as a commodity to food as [more of] a common good”1. This implies the need for deep reforms in food policy that touch upon every part of the food system. The GCSA’s advice was informed by an Evidence Review Report (ERR)2 that was conducted independently to ensure academic rigour and prevent claims of political bias., We acknowledge the administrative support and guidance provided by C. Tschirhart as Lead Scientific Policy Officer for the Evidence Review Report on which this paper is based. The Report was produced under the auspices of the Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA) consortium, under Grant Agreement 737432 ‘Science Advice for Policy by European Academies’, signed by the consortium and the European Commission on 22 November 2016.

Abstract

International audience; For a transition from a linear, ‘take-make-dispose’ economy to a sustainable usage of all constituents of renewable resources in cascading and circular pathways, new business models valorising streams that are currently considered as waste are needed.The aim of this article is to understand critical success and risk factors of eco-innovative business models that contribute to a circular economy via agricultural unavoidable waste or by-products valorisation.39 cases were studied focusing on agricultural side stream conversion into valuable products. Semi-structured interviews were performed and secondary data collected. Cases were analysed according to types of initiatives, main objectives, resources and valorisation pathways, as well as external and internal factors that have influenced the businesses over time.Following success and risk factor categories are identified: (1) technical and logistic, (2) economic, financial and marketing, (3) organisational and spatial, (4) institutional and legal, (5) environmental, social and cultural. Herein, specific factors for the agricultural sector are innovative conversion technologies, flexible in and out logistics, joint investments in R&D, price competitiveness for bio-based products, partnerships with research organisations, space availability, subsidies, agricultural waste management regulations, local stakeholder involvement and acceptance of bio-based production processes.Insights from this study can help farmers and agribusiness managers by defining and adapting their strategies within their local contexts. They also show that for shifting from linear agro-food chains to a circular system, individual businesses need to evolve towards more dynamic and integrated business models, in which the macro-environment sets the boundary conditions for successful operations.

Abstract

International audience; In recent years, the technological lock-in of the wheat industry has led to the emergence of alternatives which are now taking on a new dimension with regard to consumer concerns about gluten. Based on a research-intervention in Occitanie and a national survey, this article proposes an interdisciplinary and systemic approach to the development of local wheat chains. It shows how farmers and artisans are carrying out social innovations that reorient technological innovation towards a new agri-food system taking into account new indicators of wealth. While taking part in the work on the scaling up of short food chains, it thus calls to study further the coupling between social innovation and technological innovation in the history and transition of agri-food systems.; Le verrouillage technologique des filières blés a suscité, dans la période récente, l’émergence d’alternatives qui prennent aujourd’hui une nouvelle dimension au regard des préoccupations des consommateurs vis-à-vis du gluten. Basé sur une recherche-intervention en Occitanie et une étude menée à l’échelle nationale, cet article propose une approche interdisciplinaire et systémique du développement des chaînes locales autour des blés. Il montre comment des agriculteurs et des artisans portent des innovations sociales qui réorientent l’innovation technologique vers un nouveau système agroalimentaire prenant en compte de nouveaux indicateurs de richesse. Tout en prenant place dans les travaux sur le changement d’échelle des circuits courts alimentaires, il appelle ainsi à approfondir le couplage entre innovation sociale et innovation technologique dans l’histoire et la transition des systèmes agroalimentaires.

International audience; The European Agenda Food2030 addresses food systems as a major area for research and innovation. The Farm to Fork strategy as part of the Green Deal emphasizes the need for reaching sustainable food systems. This poses numerous questions . What are sustainable and unsustainable food systems? In what territorial settings (playing fields) are they (un)sustainable? Under which conditions are food systems crossing the border between sustainable and unsustainable configurations (in physical terms ‘order and chaos’)? Which internal and external measures influence these systems? Which processes in systems are impacted and how? What are the potential contributions of food science and technology in finding transition pathways towards sustainable food systems? Those questions will be dealt with by presenting a new conceptual framework for sustainable food systems allowing following their development in time. This framework is tested and discussed for food science and novel technology innovation cases in different European countries. Five cases have been selected characterized by both technological and organizational innovations in processing and preservation of food and other bio-based products and by-products; in addition, the social context has been taken into account. Results indicate that only in case technological innovations are studied together with organizational and social innovations in well-defined playing fields, discussions about sustainable food systems make sense. Next to further deepening insights in disciplines, like food science and technology, this also implies intensified collaborations between scholars of different disciplines, hence more interdisciplinary research, debates and (EFFoST) conferences.

Abstract

The objective of this report is to give recommendations to the policy makers on the types of policy measures that can significantly boost industrial ecology development in the involved agricultural chains. On the input side, special focus is offered to the potential utilisation of manure, straw and wine waste, while on the output side to bioenergy, biofuels and, most importantly to the various bio-polymers explored in other work packages of the project.

Abstract

International audience; Pulses are essential for the sustainability transition of agrifood system. Their nutritional values allow animalbased protein intake reduction and contribute to healthy diets. Moreover, increasing their cultivation reduces fertilizers' uses and so, greenhouse gases emissions. But in high-income countries, and particularly in Europe, pulses consumption is very low. Previous works explained the mechanisms that led to a strong lock-in on pulses compared to the development of major crops, calling for stronger research and innovation to develop alternative food based on pulses. Food innovation remains strongly linked to the scientific knowledge and understanding how research output could sustain food innovation dynamics for sustainability is challenging. Mobilising scientometrics, STS Science and Technology Studies(STS) and Food Sciences and Technology(FST) scholars, the aim of this interdisciplinary study is to conduct a first map of the pulses FST. Describing what are the main issues tackled by FST on pulses will give to stakeholders a better understanding of the opportunities and expectations that could emerge in the development of a new food industry sector on pulses, as it will help academic research to identify specific field of interest to invest into. We considered 16 main pulses to build a dataset of more than 2,000 scholarly publications including at least one European author(articles, book, book chapters, and reviews) between 1980 and 2018, retrieved from the Web of Knowledge(Clarivate Analytics). Based on "natural language processing" clusterisation method we defined the main research themes structuring of the FST on pulses. We show that pulses have become a specific subfield of interest for FST in Europe, organized around of a great variety of subjects, and we focus on identifying the current gaps and opportunities to question science and innovation policies for pulses.

Abstract

International audience; Biochar has caught great attention over the last decade, yielding a large number of publications in a broad range of disciplines. This scientometric study produces a combined qualitative–quantitative assessment of 10,000 publications recorded in the period 2005–2019 in the Web of Science (WoS) database, based on innovative methods and indicators, and focusing in particular on biochar production and valorization pathways. The cumulated number of publications was analyzed with power and logistic models, and the economic indicator CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) for the estimation of future academic output. Mapping of the evolution of academic output revealed the worldwide diffusion of academic production toward many countries and continents. According to the analysis of collaboration networks of most productive countries, the development of academic output may be linked to high levels of international collaboration, as well as the diversity of these networks. Furthermore, the rise of academic output in the African continent may preclude an evolution toward a multipolar academic world. The average number of citations per paper at both author level (number of citations/number of papers) and journal level (total citations/total papers) was found to be a useful indicator of scientific productivity. In particular, academic journals with impact factors as low as 2.5–3 still ranked high on this criterion, revealing their high impact on academic research in the biochar sector. Finally, the analysis of targeted keywords co-occurrences emphasized the diversification of research on biochar applications, from its initial use as soil improver toward engineered biochar for versatile applications.

Abstract

International audience; Incorporation of agriculture unused by-products into materials is a relevant strategy to develop sustainable and profitable biobased products while limiting environmental impacts of plastics. In addition, the design of such biomaterials with 3D printing techniques as FDM allow to bring them new functionalities. However, the plant material properties and the interactions with the polymeric matrix are critical to control throughout the process, from filament production to 3D printing, to obtain a high-quality material.In this study, flax shives were selectively milled and then, used as a starting plant by-product to be grafted to a fluorophore whose fluorescence varies under pH. The resulting fluorescent shives were processed with poly-(butylene-terephthalate) (PBAT) by extrusion to produce a filament reinforced with 10%-wt of flax shives (whose 10% were grafted), which was 3D printed. Extensive microstructural characterization (particle size and shape analysis, X-ray microtomography) demonstrated that flax particles are homogeneously distributed into the 3D printed material. Despite the relatively low content of fluorescent flax shives in the final 3D printed material (1%-wt) and successive heating stages (during extrusion and 3D printing), a strong fluorescent emission could still be measured.This work paves the way for using flax shives as reinforcements into composites while conferring them fluorescent properties, thus making 4D materials with potential applications as sensors depending on the fluorophore used.

Abstract

International audience; Most lipids in our diet come under the form of triacylglycerols that are often redispersed and stabilized by surfactants in processed foods. In plant however, lipid assemblies constitute interesting sources of natural bioactive and functional ingredients. In most photosynthetic sources, polar lipids rich in ω3 fatty acids are concentrated. The objective of this review is to summarize all the knowledge about the physico-chemical composition, digestive behavior and oxidative stability of plant polar lipid assemblies to emphasize their potential as functional ingredients in human diet and their potentialities to substitute artificial surfactants/antioxidants. The specific composition of plant membrane assemblies is detailed, including plasma membranes, oil bodies, and chloroplast; emphasizing its concentration in phospholipids, galactolipids, peculiar proteins, and phenolic compounds. These molecular species are hydrolyzed by specific digestive enzymes in the human gastrointestinal tract and reduced the hydrolysis of triacylglycerols and their subsequent absorption. Galactolipids specifically can activate ileal break and intrinsically present an antioxidant (AO) activity and metal chelating activity. In addition, their natural association with phenolic compounds and their physical state (Lα state of digalactosyldiacylglycerols) in membrane assemblies can enhance their stability to oxidation. All these elements make plant membrane molecules and assemblies very promising components with a wide range of potential applications to vectorize ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and equilibrate human diet.

Abstract

International audience; Adsorption of five different hyperbranched arabinogalactan-protein (AGP) fractions from Acacia senegal gum was thoroughly studied at the solid-liquid interface using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The impact of the protein/sugar ratio, molecular weight, and aggregation state on the adsorption capacity was investigated by studying AGP fractions with different structural and biochemical features. Adsorption on a solid surface would be primarily driven by the protein moiety of the AGPs through hydrophobic forces and electrostatic interactions. Increasing ionic strength allows the decrease in electrostatic repulsions and, therefore, the formation of high-coverage films with aggregates on the surface. However, the maximum adsorption capacity was not reached by fractions with a higher protein content but by a fraction that contains an average protein quantity and presents a high content of high-molecular-weight AGPs. The results of this thorough study highlighted that the AGP surface adsorption process would depend not only on the protein moiety and high-molecular-weight AGP content but also on other parameters such as the structural accessibility of proteins, the molecular weight distribution, and the AGP flexibility, allowing structural rearrangements on the surface and spreading to form a viscoelastic film

Abstract

International audience; Urban parks and gardens green waste constitute a low-cost and highly available lignocellulosic-rich resource, that is currently treated in composting or anaerobic digestion processes. The present work investigated for the first time the potential of using urban green waste as raw resource for the production of lignocellulosic fillers by dry fractionation (combination of sorting and grinding processes). Five fractions of lignocellulosic fillers with controlled composition were produced: a branches-rich fraction, a grasses-rich fraction, a leaves-rich fraction, and two fractions constituted of a mixture of constituents. All the fractions were ground to reach an average median diameter around 100 μm. The reinforcing effect of each fraction was investigated and compared to that of the sample as a whole. Biocomposites based on a poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) as matrix were produced by melt extrusion, with filler contents up to 30 wt%. It was shown that the branches-rich fraction displayed the best reinforcing effect (e.g. stress at break of 37 ± 1 MPa for a filler content of 15 wt%, similar to that of the neat matrix) whereas the grasses-rich fraction slightly degraded the overall mechanical performance (e.g. stress at break of 33.5 ± 1.5 MPa for a filler content of 15 wt%). The dry fractionation and formulation steps could be thus adapted depending on the targeted application, e.g. by choosing to use the whole urban green waste resource, or to remove grasses, or to keep only branches.

Abstract

International audience; This study aimed to produce activated biochars (BCs) from Moroccan algae residue (AG) and olive pomace (OP) using mechanochemical activation with NaOH and ball milling (BM) for treating artificial textile wastewater containing methylene blue (MeB). The produced OP-activated BC by BM showed the highest absolute value of zeta-potential (-59.7 mV) and high removal efficiency of MeB compared to other activated BCs. The nonlinear pseudo-first-order kinetic model was the most suitable model to describe the kinetics of adsorption of MeB onto biochars produced from AG and the NaOH-activated BC from OP, whereas the nonlinear pseudo-second-order kinetic model suits the OP raw biochar and BM-activated BC. The nonlinear Langmuir isotherm model was the most suitable model for describing MeB adsorption onto BCs, compared to the nonlinear Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities of AG-activated BCs with NaOH and BM were 13.1 and 9.1 mg/g, respectively, while those of OP-activated BCs were 2.6 and 31.8 mg/g, respectively. The thermodynamic study indicates the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process of most activated BCs. In addition, Delta S degrees values indicate the increase of randomness at the solid-liquid interface during MeB sorption onto BC.

Abstract

International audience; Wheat gluten includes two major proteins classes, gliadin (25–60 kg/mol) and glutenin polymers (100 to > 2,000 kg/mol) each comprising several polypeptides routinely identified by size-exclusion chromatography and electrophoresis. Gluten proteins are rich in glutamine (30%) and contain several repeated sequences, linking them to the wide class of intrinsically disordered protein (IDP). Here we showed that an ethanol/water (EtOH/W, 50/50, v/v) extract of an industrial gluten, comprising 1/3 of glutenin polymers and 2/3 of gliadin, underwent liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) below 14 °C, leading to two coexisting phases, respectively rich and poor in protein. As the quenching depth increased, proteins of lower and lower molecular weight joined the rich phase, akin to what would have been obtained for a polydisperse polymer sample. Within the rich phase the mass ratio of glutenin over gliadin decreased from 2.5 to 0.5 as the temperature dropped from 14 °C to −0.8 °C. Concomitantly the concentration in glutenin polymers increased up to 143 ± 6 g/L (at 9 °C) and then stopped to evolve, suggesting that the binodal line intersected the gelation line below this temperature. Applying the Flory-Huggins (FH) lattice model for each gluten protein classes, we demonstrated that their partitioning in the coexisting phases followed a same temperature dependency. However, some gliadin species joined the rich phase above their critical temperature. Here, specific interactions with the glutenin polymers through weak forces were exemplified. The study demonstrated the relevance of the Flory-Huggins (FH) lattice model in predicting phase behavior even when applied to complex protein mixtures.

Abstract

International audience; Phenolic compounds (PC) strongly contribute to the beneficial health effects of wheat, but their interactions can affect the quality of end-use wheat products. Free and bound PC were comprehensively characterized in 14 wheat flours (Triticum aestivum) from different Brazilian genotypes and technological qualities by using a metabolomics approach (UPLC-ESI-QTOF-MSE) combined with classical characterizations: colorimetry, ash, protein, starch and total phenolic content (TPC). Globally, 43 PC were identified: 33 (bound, 28 (free) and 15 in all flours, regardless of extract. Ferulic acid isomers were the most abundant PC, representing 25–50% of ion abundance depending on genotype. Campeiro, Sossego and Topázio genotypes showed a distinguished profile, with the highest total relative abundance of PC. TPC was significantly higher in flours with higher gluten strength (66.5–58.0 mg GAE/100 g flour). The ratio free-to-bound of PC averaged 1.15 between the flours of different technological qualities. Although PCA highlighted specific PC related to technological qualities, the genotype effect was very pronounced. This study correlates the phenolic profile and technological quality of wheat flours and provides the most recent data on the secondary metabolites profile, especially PC in refined flour, attesting to its significant nutritional importance due to its large consumption in refined forms.

Abstract

International audience; The residual biomass of cold-pressed green coffee oil (GCO), rich in chlorogenic acids (CGA), was reused by incorporating the press cake (CE) and sediment (SE) extracts into carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films. The effect of these extracts combined with GCO was investigated on the physicochemical, barrier, and antioxidant properties, and on the ability of the active films to delay fish oil oxidation. The films with added CE and GCO (C-CE) or SE and GCO (C-SE) showed high antioxidant activity, 3.61 ± 0.01 and 2.03 ± 0.01 mmol Trolox eq/g dry film, respectively. These findings are in line with the CGA content in CE and SE (9.8 and 9.0% w/w, respectively), as determined by HPLC. The addition of SE and GCO slightly affects the oxygen barrier of CMC films, while providing them with high Ultraviolet–Visible (UV–Vis) absorption. The evolution of peroxide value (PV) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in fish oil samples covered by C-CE and C-SE films and inert headspace was significantly lower than those of controls (storage at 40 °C for 16 days). The antioxidant release from films with added CE and SE showed an antagonistic behaviour into the food simulants. Although both active films are promising for active packaging, the C-SE film appeared as more advantageous for oil-rich food protection.

Abstract

International audience; Lipid oxidation is a major cause of quality deterioration in food products. In these foods, lipids are often present in a bulk or in emulsified forms. In both systems, the rate, extent and pathway of oxidation are highly dependent on the presence of colloidal structures and interfaces because these are the locations where oxidation normally occurs. In bulk oils, reverse micelles (association colloids) are present and are believed to play a crucial role on lipid oxidation. Conversely, in emulsions, surfactant micelles are present that also play a major role in lipid oxidation pathways. After a brief description of lipid oxidation and antioxidants mechanisms, this review discusses the current understanding of the influence of micellar structures on lipid oxidation. In particular, is discussed the major impact of the presence of micelles in emulsions, or reverse micelles (association colloids) in bulk oil on the oxidative stability of both systems. Indeed, both micelles in emulsions and associate colloids in bulk oils are discussed in this review as nanoscale structures that can serve as reservoirs of antioxidants and pro-oxidants and are involved in their transport within the concerned system. Their role as nanoreactors where lipid oxidation reactions occur is also commented.

Abstract

International audience; In the context of global warming and environmental pressure, food chains must adapt to new production conditions while satisfying the evolving consumer demand. Livestock production is known for its negative ecological footprint, bringing forward the question of a possible transition towards more plant-based diets. Citizens' demand evolves at different speeds and integrates these new environmental concerns sometimes mixed with health or ethical issues. We carried out a survey with 1,715 respondents in France, about their food choice priorities and preferences, as well as the drivers of change. Our results indicate that 40% of respondents claim that their current diet is not what they would ideally have and 98% of them would like to reduce their animal product consumption. Classification algorithms reveals several salient variables separating classes of individuals wishing to shift their food diet towards less animal products: the willingness to change is stronger for the youngest, factors impacting the willingness to change are food pleasure, health and to a lesser extent social resistance and animal ethics. The less radical the animal product reduction is, the more environmental concerns become the main motivation.

Abstract

International audience; Hypothesis: The value of the maximal weight of a pendant drop formed at the end of a syringe needle is lower than the intensity of the corresponding capillary force. The balance of the external forces applied to the maximal pendant drop must be completed by the overpressure generated by the piston of the syringe. Inside the drop, the Laplace pressure corresponds to this overpressure.Experiments: Pendant drops are made with three liquids and five different needle diameters. The influence of Laplace pressure on the maximal weight is experimentally highlighted by modulating the drop curvatures thanks to glass beads placed at the apex of the pendant drop. Their maximal weight and curvatures are measured by image analysis.Findings: Experiments confirm that the balance of external forces must be completed by the force acting on the syringe piston. The overpressure on the piston has an impact on the drops via the Laplace pressure. A master curve between the mean curvature and the maximal volume of the pendant drops is observed. This result allows to validate an expression of the maximal weight which integrates the Laplace pressure. This work contributes to a better understanding of the maximal pendant drop properties and beyond, of the capillary phenomenon.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of pretreating macroalgal residue (MAR) from agar-agar extraction and its co-digestion with sewage sludge on methane production and the agronomic quality of the digestates produced. First, different pretreatments were assessed on BMP tests. Among milling technologies used, knife milling with a 4 mm-screen improved methane production by 25%. The MAR was then knife milled before alkaline, acid and thermal pretreatment. KOH pretreatment (5% TS basis, 25 °C for 2 days) led to the highest methane improvement. It was applied to semi-continuous anaerobic digestion and methane production achieved 237 Nml/gVS which was 20% higher than the control (198 Nml/gVS). In comparison to MAR mono-digestion, co-digestion with thickened activated sludge produced less methane (184 Nml/gVS) but reduced H2S emission by 91%. None of the digestates was toxic for the germination or growth of wheat and tomato plants. Particularly, co-digestion had the highest impact on tomato plant dry weight (+94% compared to soil alone) mainly due to the phosphorous brought by sludge. However, the impact of alkaline pretreatment on plant growth was not significant.

Abstract

Nanocrystalline titania was synthesized by a simple, innovative and eco-friendly gelation method by using biopolymers (polysaccharides). The effect of the gelling agent, such as carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) or alginate (Alg), and the drying routes (conventional drying at room temperature, or freeze-drying) on the properties and photocatalytic performances of nanostructured TiO 2 was examined. The crystallographic structures, and textural and morphological characteristics were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry (ESEM-FEG-EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms. The as-synthesized samples were fully crystallized and appeared to be highly phase-pure anatase or mixed titania polymorphs, and have a quasi-spherical shape with a particle size ranging from 10.34 to 18.07 nm. Phase-pure anatase was obtained by using alginate as the gelling agent, whereas CMC's gelation promotes mixed structures. The presence of rutile phase results in a lower bandgap value of 3.04 eV corresponding to 408 nm. Thus, the material absorption wavelength shifts slightly from the UV (190-380 nm) to visible region (380-750 nm). The drying process also affects TiO 2 properties. The lyophilization route improves the oxide's specific surface area, and also its photocatalytic properties verified during Orange G dye photodegradation study.

Abstract

International audience; Galactolipids, mainly monogalactosyl diglycerides and digalactosyl diglycerides are the main lipids found in the membranes of plants, algae and photosynthetic microorganisms like microalgae and cyanobacteria. As such, they are the main lipids present at the surface of the earth. They may represent up to 80 % of the fatty acid stocks, including a large proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids mainly -linolenic acid (ALA). Nevertheless, the interest in these lipids for nutrition and other applications remains overlooked, probably because they are dispersed in the biomass and are not as easy to extract as vegetable oils from oleaginous fruit and oil seeds. Another reason is that galactolipids only represent a small fraction of the acylglycerolipids present in modern human diet. In herbivores such as horses, fish and folivorous insects, galactolipids may however represent the main source of dietary fatty acids due to their dietary habits and digestion physiology. The development of galactolipase assays has led to the identification and characterization of the enzymes involved in the digestion of galactolipids in the gastrointestinal tract, as well as by microorganisms. Pancreatic lipase-related protein 2 (PLRP2) has been identified as an important factor of galactolipid digestion in humans, together with pancreatic carboxyl ester hydrolase (CEH). The levels of PLRP2 are particularly high in monogastric herbivores thus highlighting the peculiar role of PLRP2 in the digestion of plant lipids. Similarly, pancreatic lipase homologs are found to be expressed in the midgut of folivorous insects, in which a high galactolipase activity can be measured. In fish, however, CEH is the main galactolipase involved. This review discusses the origins and fatty acid composition of galactolipids and the physiological contribution of galactolipid digestion in various species. This overlooked aspect of lipid digestion ensures not only the intake of ALA from its main natural source, but also the main lipid source of energy for growth of some herbivorous species.

Abstract

The main objective of this work was to study the possibility of using polysaccharides and lignin as a coating material for water-soluble triple superphosphate (TSP) granular fertilizers. In this study, composites based on three polysaccharides (sodium alginate (alginic acid sodium salt): AL, kappa-carrageenan: CR and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt: CM) and lignin (LG) were prepared. The lignin used was extracted from olive pomace (OP) biomass using the alkali method. The morphological, mechanical, and surface properties as well as the thermal behavior of the coatings were characterized and compared. Their morphology and thickness revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed good adhesion between the fertilizer and coating materials. The results showed that the lignin-carrageenan formulation (LGCR) exhibited the highest water absorbency and elastic modulus. Release tests showed the effect of the TSP/biopolymer mass ratio and that the slowest P release was obtained with the LGCR@TSP formulation composite within 3 day. In addition, 59.5% and 72.5% of P was released after 3 days with the TSP/biopolymer mass ratios of 5/1 and 15/1, respectively, compared to 100% P release with the uncoated TSP.

Abstract

International audience; CBR systems leverage past experiences to make decisions. Recently, the AI community has taken an interest in making CBR systems explainable. Logic-based frameworks make answers straightforward to explain. However, they struggle in the face of conflicting information, unlike probabilistic techniques. We show how probabilistic inductive logic programming (PILP) can be applied in CBR systems to make transparent decisions combining logic and probabilities. Then, we demonstrate how our approach can be applied in scenarios presenting uncertainty.

Abstract

Background The recalcitrance of lignocellulosics to enzymatic saccharification has been related to many factors, including the tissue and molecular heterogeneity of the plant particles. The role of tissue heterogeneity generally assessed from plant sections is not easy to study on a large scale. In the present work, dry fractionation of ground maize shoot was performed to obtain particle fractions enriched in specific tissue or molecules. The degradation profiles of the fractions were compared considering physical changes in addition to chemical conversion.Results Coarse, medium and fine fractions were produced using a dry process followed by an electrostatic separation. The physical and chemical characteristics of the fractions varied, suggesting enrichment in tissue from leaves, pith or rind. The fractions were subjected to seven hours of enzymatic hydrolysis in a torus reactor designed for real-time monitoring of the number and size of the particles. Saccharification efficiency was monitored by analyzing the sugar content of hydrolysate samples collected at different times. The lowest and highest saccharification yields were measured in the coarse and fine fractions, respectively, and these yields paralleled the reduction in the size and number of particles. The behavior of the positively- and negatively-charged particles of medium-size fractions was contrasted. Although the amount of sugar release was similar, the changes in particle size and number differed during enzymatic degradation. The reduction in the number of particles proceeded faster than that of particle size, suggesting that degradable particles were degraded to the point of disappearance with no significant erosion or fragmentation. Considering all fractions, the saccharification yield was positively correlated with the amount of water associated with [5-15 nm] pore size range at 67% moisture content while the reduction in the number of particles was inversely correlated with the amount of lignin. Lignin could act in maintaining the macroscopic structure of particles without necessarily prohibitive effects on the accessibility of enzymes to their substrates.Conclusion Real-time monitoring of sugar release and changes in the number and size of the particles clearly evidenced different degradation patterns for fractions of maize shoot that could be related to tissue heterogeneity in the plant.

Abstract

This is a draft version the paper has been accepted in NMR 2021; International audience; This paper proposes a new way of handling the inconsistency of a knowledge base when answering to a query about the validity of a formula. The idea is inspired by human behavior in front of inconsistency, namely, try to never encounter it. For this purpose, we encode a kind of compartmentalization of the working memory. More precisely, given a query and a potentially inconsistent knowledge base, called long term memory, our system only loads in working memory the consistent knowledge which is the most related to the query. We position this system with regard to a major reference in the field, Brewka's preferred subtheories, and study its efficiency by providing complexity and experimental results.

Abstract

Lipid oxidation is a major concern in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical sectors. The degradation of unsaturated lipids affects the nutritional, physicochemical, and organoleptic properties of products and can lead to off-flavors and to the formation of potentially harmful oxidation compounds. To prevent or slow down lipid oxidation, different antioxidant additives are used alone or in combination to achieve the best possible efficiency with the minimum possible quantities. In manufactured products, that is, heterogeneous systems containing lipids as emulsions or bulk phase, the efficiency of an antioxidant is determined not only by its chemical reactivity, but also by its physical properties and its interaction with other compounds present in the products. The antioxidants most widely used on the industrial scale are probably tocopherols, either as natural extracts or pure synthetic molecules. Considerable research has been conducted on their antioxidant activity, but results regarding their efficiency are contradictory. Here, we review the known mechanisms behind the antioxidant activity of tocopherols and discuss the chemical and physical features that determine their efficacy. We first describe their chemical reactivity linked with the main factors that modulate it between efficient antioxidant capacity and potential prooxidant effects. We then describe their chemical interactions with other molecules (phenolic compounds, metals, vitamin C, carotenes, proteins, and phospholipids) that have potential additive, synergistic, or antagonist effects. Finally, we discuss other physical parameters that influence their activity in complex systems including their specific interactions with surfactants in emulsions and their behavior in the presence of association colloids in bulk oils.

Abstract

International audience; With more than 9000 scientific articles publishedeach day, the scientific literature, includingexperimental data and knowledge, is a valuable sourceof information for developing predictivemodels to design decision support systems. However,scientific data are heterogeneously structured,found mainly in text format and expressed using differentvocabularies. This study developed apractical and versatile pipeline that combines ontology,databases and computer calculation toolsbased on the theory of belief functions and Bayesiannetworks. The objective was to design aniterative process that can structure a domain of knowledge,use domain ontology to integrate data instructured databases, and build a predictive modelfrom ontology and data. The ontology paradigm isused to help integrate data from heterogeneous sourcesand build the structure of the Bayesian network. The parameters of the Bayesian network are estimated using the integrated data taking intoaccount their reliability. The pipeline can be usediteratively to enrich the database and the modelwithnew data and knowledge over time without damagingthe entire system. The pipeline was assessedby applying it to a complex food engineering process:skimmed milk microfiltration. , which is one ofthe first operations that can be carried out afterharvesting. This application enabled buildingthedomain ontology of milk microfiltration to annotatestate-of-the-art literature sources, creatingastructured database and developing a predictivemodel of the permeation flux associated withoperating conditions.

Abstract

Background The excessive use of synthetic insecticides is responsible for many cases of resistance in insects. Therefore, the use of natural molecules of ecological interest with insecticidal properties is an alternative approach to the use of synthetic insecticides. The aim of this study is to investigating the larvicidal and adulticidal activity and the chemical composition of the essential oil of Aeollanthus pubescens on the major malaria vector, Anopheles gambiae. Methods Three reference strains of Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto (Kisumu, Kiskdr and Acerkis) were used in this study. The leaves of A. pubescens were collected in southern Benin. The standard World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines for larvicide evaluation were used, and the chemical composition of the essential oil was analysed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Adult mosquitoes of each strain were exposed to pieces of net coated with the essential oil for 3 min using the WHO cone bioassay method. Probit regression analysis was used to determine the concentrations that would kill 50 and 95% of each test population (LC50, LC95) and the knockdown time for 50 and 95% of each test population (KDT50, and KDT95). The difference between the mortality–dose regressions for the different strains was analysed using the likelihood ratio test (LRT). The log-rank test was performed to evaluate the difference in survival between the strains. Results A total of 14 components were identified, accounting for 98.3% of total oil content. The major components were carvacrol (51.1%), thymyle acetate (14.0%) and ɣ-terpinene (10.6%). The essential oil showed larvicidal properties on the Kisumu, Acerkis and Kiskdr strains, with LC50 of 29.6, 22.9 and 28.4 ppm, respectively. With pieces of netting treated at 165 µg/cm2, the KDT50 of both Acerkis (1.71 s; Z = 3.34, P Z = 3.49, P χ2 = 99, df = 1, P χ2 = 117, df = 1, P χ2 = 96.9, df = 1, P Conclusion Our findings show that A. pubescens essential oil has larvicide and adulticide properties against the malaria vector An. gambiae sensu stricto, suggesting that this essential oil may be a potential candidate for the control of the resistant malaria-transmitting vectors. Abstract

The lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have great potential to produce homoexopolysaccharides (HoPS), have been the subject of extensive research efforts, given their health benefits and physicochemical properties. The HoPS functional properties are determined by structural characteristics of varied molecular weights, types of glycosidic linkages, degrees of branching and chemical composition. The dextransucrases (DSases) are responsible of the synthesis of a kind of HoPS (dextran polymers), which are among the first biopolymers produced at industrial scale with applications in medicine and biotechnology. The concept of glycodiversification opens additional applications for DSases. In that sense the design and characterization of new DSases is of prime importance. Previously, we described the isolation and characterization of a novel extracellular dextransucrase (DSR-F) encoding gene. In this study, from DSR-F, we design a novel chimeric dextransucrase DSR-F-∆SP-∆GBD-CBM2a, where DSR-F-∆SP-∆GBD is fused to the carbohydrate-binding module (CBM2a) of the β-1-4 exoglucanase/xylanase Cex (Xyn10A) of Cellulomonas fimi ATCC 484. This dextransucrase variant is active and without alteration in its specificity. The DSR-F-∆SP-∆GBD-CBM2a is purified by cellulose affinity chromatography for the very first time. Our results indicate that new hybrids and chimeric DSases with novel binding capacity to cellulose can be designed to obtain glyco-biocatalysts from renewable lignocellulosic materials.

Abstract

International audience; In order to correctly assess the nutritional quality of a raw or manufactured food product, the first step is to obtain the associated nutritional values. Food composition databases (FCDBs) managed at national level provide values for nutrients of foods. Unfortunately, values associated with some nutrients of interest may be lacking in the FCDB of the country in which the nutritional quality must be assessed and finding values associated with nutrients for similar foods in other FCDBs is a way to deal with incompleteness. An additional issue arises because the vocabulary used to denote a given food in a given FCDB is usually different from the one used in others. In this paper, the authors address the problem of retrieving the nutritional value of foods by querying different FCDBs through FoodOn used as pivot ontology. The article presents a new food source alignment method between two FCDBs. The method has been evaluated on the French and United States food nutritional evaluation. The proposed solution for the incompleteness management task has been assessed with a real use case.

Abstract

Using molecular dynamics simulations we study the static and dynamic properties of spherical nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a disordered and polydisperse polymer network. Purely repulsive (RNP) as well as weakly attractive (ANP) polymer-NP interactions are considered. It is found that for both types of particles the NP dynamics at intermediate and at long times is controlled by the confinement parameter $C=\sigma_N/\lambda$, where $\sigma_N$ is the NP diameter and $\lambda$ is the dynamic localization length of the crosslinks. Three dynamical regimes are identified: i) For weak confinement ($C \lesssim 1$) the NPs can freely diffuse through the mesh; ii) For strong confinement ($C \gtrsim 1$) NPs proceed by means of activated hopping; iii) For extreme confinement ($C \gtrsim 3$) the mean squared displacement shows on intermediate time scales a quasi-plateau since the NPs are trapped by the mesh for very long times. Escaping from this local cage is a process that depends strongly on the local environment, thus giving rise to an extremely heterogeneous relaxation dynamics. The simulation data are compared with the two main theories for the diffusion process of NPs in gels. Both theories give a very good description of the $C-$dependence of the NP diffusion constant, but fail to reproduce the heterogeneous dynamics at intermediate time scales., Comment: 62 pages, 24 figures

Different types of additives, finishes and chemicals have been used to overcome the lack of structural integrity under large impacts, poor resistance to moisture and limited acoustic resistance of gypsum ceiling tiles. Few studies have shown that reinforcing gypsum with natural materials provides better performance properties. Wool and coir are biodegradable natural fibers that are available in large quantities at low costs and have some unique properties suitable for developing green building materials. In this study a blend of wool and coir were used to enhance properties and performance of gypsum ceiling tiles. Composites were manufactured by using 30% fiber and 70% gypsum and varying the proportion of wool and coir between 25–75%. The reinforcing fibers were combined with gypsum using water and no other chemical or additives are necessary, making the production of tiles simple and environmentally friendly. Fiber reinforced gypsum showed higher strength (up to 90% higher) and modulus (up to 7%) and also better resistance to moisture. Wool fibers provided substantially higher moisture resistance while coir provided better strength. A blend of the two fibers provided a flame resistance rating of V1 compared to V0 for pure gypsum. Reinforcing gypsum with coir and wool would not only improve thermal and acoustic properties but will also help to reduce cost and make a major portion of the gypsum ceiling tiles biodegradable and thereby decrease environmental burden and helps towards promoting green building initiatives

Abstract

International audience; This work evidenced the insecticidal activity of encapsulated Mentha spicata essential oil (EO) against Rhyzopertha dominica in presence of stored wheat grain and evaluated the residual EO amount in wheat grains after treatment. EO distribution in the different fractions recovered after grain milling was also determined. The mortality rate against R. dominica reached more than 90% and was dependent on the amount of EO released from the encapsulation matrix. The quantification of the two major compounds of EO, (R)-limonene and (R)-carvone, showed that wheat grains contained different amount depending on the storage conditions. When wheat grains were stored in open jars, the EO residual amount in grains was especially low (1.98 mg/kg) compared to amount in closed jar (51.6 mg/kg). The flour resulting from milling contained lower amount of EO compounds in comparison with the bran fractions. The contact of wheat grains with EO clearly modified the native aromatic profile of the wheat flour as the most represented compounds were those belonging to the EO. In the native flour, ten volatile compounds, mainly alcohols and aldehydes due to oxidation of lipids were identified, which represented only 14% of the aromatic profile when the wheat grains were treated by EO. However, when the storage condition of grains mimics the silos conditions, the level of (R)-carvone, the major component of spearmint EO is found around 3 mg/kg of flour which was far below its currently use in bakery products.

Abstract

Context. In line with Sustainable Development Goals 3 “Good health and well-being” and 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production”, this paper is concerned with the fragile population of the less-than-3-years-old children. More specifically, it investigates how infant food safety is perceived at the household level and at the level of childhood and health professionals directly in contact with them. Objective. The paper aims to analyze consumer priorities and perceptions of hazards in infant foods qualitatively and quantitatively. Methodology. To do so, a survey was carried out in France on 1750 people representative of the general population. A hybrid method is proposed to analyze the results of the survey, mixing artificial intelligence and statistics. Main insights. Within the declared priorities when choosing infant food, health comes first, with a top ranking for the absence of harmful substances, followed closely by nutritional balance—far ahead of environment, ease of use and price. The results show that the rankings of the hazards that cause the most worry are globally homogeneous throughout the populations (families, professionals, etc.) and higher for chemical contaminants from agricultural practices and packaging. For health professionals, concerns are higher than in the general population for all categories of contaminants, and specific concerns such as risk related to environmental and unknown contaminants are much more prevalent. The perception of risk varies with the food considered. For infant formula in particular, users seem puzzled by somehow contradictory messages. Perspectives. The study is intended to be generalized to Europe.
