International audience; Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) causes the black rot of cruciferous plants. This seed-borne bacterium is considered as the most destructive disease to cruciferous crops. Although sources of contamination are various, seeds are the main source of transmission. Typical symptoms of black rot were first observed in 2011 on cabbage and cauliflower fields in the main production areas of Algeria. Leaf samples displaying typical symptoms were collected during 2011 to 2014, and 170 strains were isolated from 45 commercial fields. Xcc isolates were very homogeneous in morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics similar to reference strains, and gave positive pathogenicity and molecular test results (multiplex PCR with specific primers). This is the first record of Xcc in Algeria. Genetic diversity within the isolates was assessed in comparison with strains isolated elsewhere. A multilocus sequence analysis based on two housekeeping genes (gyrB and rpoD) was carried out on 77 strains representative isolates. The isolates grouped into 20 haplotypes defined with 68 polymorphic sites. The phylogenetic tree obtained showed that Xcc is in two groups, and all Algerian strains clustered in group 1 in three subgroups. No relationships were detected between haplotypes and the origins of the seed lots, the varieties of host cabbage, the years of isolation and agroclimatic regions.

International audience; Nickel titanate on reduced graphene oxide (NiTiO3/rGO) were elaborated by facile microwave ignition method. The prepared nanomaterials were controlled using different ratios of GO to NiTiO3. The synthesized photo catalysts were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Raman Spectroscopy, Infrared Spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and UV-Reflectance Spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that photocatalytic performance of the photocatalysts for hydrogen generation increases up to 8383 mu mol/(h.g) with increasing graphene content up to 5%). However, further increase in graphene content above this optimum level has decreased the performance of photocatalyst. The enhanced photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution is attributed to extension of its absorption edge to the visible light region, directly related to retard recombination of electron-hole pairs due to synergistic effects of NiTiO3 and graphene which leads to more efficient utilization of the solar energy.

International audience; After the success of the 1st edition of Montpellier in 2016, CIHEAM organized the 2nd edition of the Mediterranean initiative for PhD students and young researchers (MedForum2018) at CIHEAM Bari (Italy) from 18 to 20 September 2018. MedForum2018, entitled “Research and Innovation: Tools for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security”, focused on the CIHEAM Strategic Agenda 2025 (CAPMED2025) and its Action Plan developed for the implementation of the United-Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in specific fields across the Mediterranean area. Through research work of PhD students and young researchers, MedForum2018 aimed at: - Fostering entrepreneurship, women and youth employment; - Identifying and sharing potential innovation tools geared towards integrated solutions for sustainable agriculture, food and nutrition security; - Enhancing research and innovation impact at national and regional level; - Proposing alternatives to prevent young researchers’ migrations. MedForum2018 was organized by CIHEAM in partnership with MAECI-Italy (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation), CMI (Center for Mediterranean Integration of the World Bank), UfM (Union for the Mediterranean), Agreenium (Institut Agronomique, Vétérinaire et Forestier de France) and with the technical collaboration of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

UMR BFP - Equipe Virologie; International audience; In a search for viral infections, double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) were recovered from a diseased cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum Mill.) accession (Cic) and analyzed by high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technology. Analysis of the HTS data showed the presence of Fig mosaic emaravirus (FMV) in this accession. The complete sequences of six FMV-Cic RNA genomic segments were determined from the HTS data and using Sanger sequencing. All FMV-Cic RNA segments are similar in size to those of FMV from fig (FMV-Gr10), with the exception of RNA-6 that is one nucleotide longer. The occurrence of FMV in cyclamen was investigated through a small-scale survey, from which four plants (out of 18 tested) were found RT-PCR positive. To study sequence variations of cyclamen isolates of FMV, RT-PCR products generated through the amplification of the partially RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp, RNA-1), glycoprotein (GP, RNA-2), and nucleocapsid (NCP, RNA-3) genes were explored. The nucleotide sequence identities for cyclamen isolates ranged between 86% and 99% in RNA-1, 93% and 99% in RNA-2, and 98% and 99% in RNA-3, while lower identity levels were observed with the sequences of fig isolates. Based on the phylogenetic tree obtained with a 304-nt fragment of RNA3, all FMV isolates from cyclamens were assigned to a single cluster close to fig isolates from the Mediterranean. FMV was graft-transmitted to healthy cyclamens eliciting symptoms similar to those observed in the Cic accession, thus suggesting a causal role of FMV in the symptoms that prompted the investigation. This is the first report of FMV in a non-fig host, Cyclamen persicum, a finding that may help in the control of the mosaic and mosaic-like diseases of fig and cyclamen, respectively.

Recently established organic regions aim to be model regions of sustainability. In the frame of this article we understand organic regions as territories that aim at the sustainable management of local resources, based on the principles of organic farming and agroecology. The contribution focuses especially on the role and configurations of values-based supply chains for the territorial development of such organic regions. Three different case studies, in Italy, France and Austria, are investigated. Principles of organic farming, according to the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement and the concept of neo-endogenous development by Christopher Ray, serve as framework for analyses. International audience; Increase in food demand, mainly due to population growth and diet changes, is putting an increasing pressure on food system and food security. In this framework, food losses and wastes (FLW) together create one of the main causes of food systems unsustainability. The two differ on the fact that food losses refer to the part of food that is lost along the supply chain before reaching final consumer while food waste represents the waste of food by final consumer. This paper focuses on the role of demographic, social and economic factors affecting household behavior related to food waste (FW) and explores some factors which can play an important role in tackling food waste issue in the case of Turkey. The paper is based on an online survey with150 Turkish respondents in January-March 2015. The sample was not gender balanced since71% of them were females. About two fifths of the respondents (38%) belong to the age group 35-44 years and 62% of the sample has a high level of education (master and PhD).The fact that the majority of the respondents are employees (70% of the sample) in the big cities of Turkey shows how the pace of the metropolitan life structure affects consumer food consumption habits and orient purchases towards supermarkets. The results of the survey show that still 95% of the respondents are responsible of FW and 90% think that food waste increases during the month of Ramadan. Nevertheless, about 50% of respondents declared the willingness to throw less away and ask for better information about the negative impacts of food waste on the environment and on the economy. Preventing bread waste campaign of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock was launched in 2013 in order to increase consciousness of the society towards bread waste which is quite important in Turkey. Similarly, there are some other initiatives on both national and local level with the objective of informing people about the food waste, sustainable food consumption and reuse of the food through food recipes.

International audience; The present document aims to provide a framework for further discussions and investigation on how sustainable development of small rural communities in SEMC can contribute to food security, which can guide future policy design to better target the needs of those communities for supporting and promoting development process. The specific objectives of this paper are to present the situation of small rural communities in the SEMC taking into consideration their geographical and social context, their farming systems, livelihoods strategies, political and institutional context, environmental, social and economic challenges, and what are the aspects that need additional research to provide a more target specific set of policies to address development and respond to the need of guaranteeing food security.

Organised around the economic developments of Mediterranean agricultural trade (flow with Europe, the United States, Brazil, Asia and sub-Saharan Africa), logistical challenges for the exchange of strategic products (grain, fruits andvegetables, meat, olive oil, seafood, etc.) and the infrastructure that condition trade (ports, corridors, multimodal platforms, cold chain, etc.), Mediterra 2014 also addresses issues related to sustainability, territorial balance and strategies of public policy actors (the increasing importance of the normative framework, the struggle against food waste or the role of local authorities). Mediterra is a collection of shared expertise and a support tool for decision making involving more than 70 international experts with the goal of providing policy-makers, professionals and researchers with the essential strategicindicators and keys to understanding the Mediterranean.

Because of the anthropiccontinuum from Olea post-glacial refuges to Oleasters (domestication) and then to olive-trees(breeding and cropping), the fragmentation of the PPN and PPF communities and of theirnatural enemies could explain the scattered diversity of the control techniques (especiallyresistance rootstocks, biocontrol, cropping strategies) developed and applied all around theMediterranean Basin. The novelty of PESTOLIVE is based on: i) the analysis and themanagement of the parasite diversity (ecology of communities) instead of controllingemblematic species (population approach), and ii) the involvement of knowledge about thehistorical co-adaptation of soil-borne parasite and natural enemies communities to olive-treedomestication (origins and past assemblages) and breeding that follows the history of O.europaea around the Mediterranean Basin.

The reference is the diet of Crete in the late 1960s. Is it provided sustainable? Various authors have commented on the design of sustainable food. Some emphasize healthy food and alternative agriculture, while others focus on the link between health and welfare, or environmental practices on consumers. For us sustainable food is the one that combines the protection of nutrients, environmental conservation, community development through social aspects. The traditional Mediterranean diet may be considered as sustainable in part because of (i) a great diversity that ensures food nutritional quality of diet and biodiversity, (ii) a variety of food practices and food preparation techniques, (iii) main foodstuffs demonstrated as beneficial to health as olive oil, fish, fruits and vegetable, pulses, fermented milk, spices, (iv) a strong commitment to culture and traditions, (v) a respect for human nature and seasonality, (vi) a diversity of landscapes that contribute to the wellbeing, (vii) a diet with low environmental impact due to low consumption of animal products. However, trends in plant breeding on an economic base, intensive modes of production and greenhouse production, higher consumption of meat, industrialization of food, endanger the sustainability of food systems. No analysis of social impact has been achieved. We cannot conclude on this aspect of sustainability, nor on the environmental impact of the food chain. In conclusion, the Mediterranean diet has numerous virtues. We must ensure that modernity and globalization do not alter its characteristics of sustainability.

There is no objective proof attesting to the authenticity of a particular know-how. Historical depth depends on temporal and spatial awareness. A relationship of trust crystallises in the name or mark used to designate a product. Marks acquire legitimacy on the basis of the reputation of a product or terroir, which is built on know-how and history relating to practices. The present paper, which combines a historical and critical approach, examines the circumstances in which these quality and origin marks emerge and spread. Multi-actor initiatives based on private or public standards rely on the economic reasoning of differentiation and market segmentation. Distinctive marks are attractive in terms of possible competitive advantages and the asset of protecting market positioning, since they bestow an exclusive title, which excludes competition. Distinctive marks are governed and managed by administrations, the guardians of doctrine, and have been the subject of compromise throughout their history. France and Europe are the bedrock of designations of origin designed to guarantee the protection of brands that are reputed for their producers’ practical know-how. Roquefort and Parmesan are emblematic of these leading trade names, which are protected against imitations by national law. Since the early 1990s, there have been shifts in meaning and practice between protection through intellectual property rights and quality control procedures. Analysis of European policies and the policies of the southern Mediterranean countries shows that legal tools and efforts to comply with the corpus of global trade rules have been developing as the result of the spread of the origin and quality model. International audience; This work aims at analyzing different management practices for the improvement of the agricultural production in the Central Jordan Valley. The optimization of the cropping pattern has been done under different water scarcity and drought conditions and prevailing environmental and socio-economic constraints. The ISAREG model was used to estimate crop water requirements, net irrigation requirements and to develop the crop response to water curves under open field and greenhouse conditions, taking into account actual soil and water salinity level. A socio-economic model was developed in order to optimize the cropping pattern and to evaluate water productivity, land use and farmer's profit under different water availability and water prices scenarios. The overall results indicated that the reduction of water availability is the most limiting factor of the agricultural production in the region which might lead to the reduction of the cultivated land and profits. However, water productivity is not affected significantly neither by the restrictions of water supply not by the increase of water tariffs. The cultivation of less water demanding and salt tolerant vegetables, especially under greenhouse conditions, as well as the application of deficit irrigation practices are recommended to adapt to drought situations.; Ce travail vise à analyser les différentes pratiques de gestion pour l'amélioration de la production agricole dans la vallée centrale du Jourdain. L'assolement a été optimisé sous des conditions différentes de disponibilité d'eau d'irrigation et de précipitations, en tenant compte des contraintes socio-économiques et environnementales. Le modèle ISAREG a été utilisé pour estimer les besoins en eau des cultures, les besoins nets d'irrigation et pour produire les fonctions de réponse à l'eau en plein champ, dans des serres, en prenant en compte les conditions du sol et les niveaux de salinité de l'eau. Un modèle socio-économique a été développé pour optimiser l'assolement et pour évaluer la productivité de l'eau, l'utilisation de la terre et le revenu des agriculteurs sous différents scénarios de disponibilité et de prix de l'eau. Les résultats montrent globalement que la réduction de la disponibilité d'eau est le facteur le plus important pour la production agricole de la région, pouvant mener à une réduction de la surface cultivée et du revenu des agriculteurs. Par contre, la productivité de l'eau n'est pas affectée sensiblement par la restriction de la disponibilité d'eau ni par l'augmentation du prix de l'eau. Il apparaît recommandable de privilégier les cultures qui demandent moins d'eau et qui sont plus tolérantes à la salinité, surtout pour les cultures sous serre. L'irrigation complémentaire est aussi la mieux adaptée aux conditions de sécheresse.

Encyclopedia on Water resources development and management in arid and semi-arid regions of the Arab world, vol. 8, Hamdy, A., Abu Zeid, M. (eds.); A new saline stress index was developed for CERES-Maize, a computer model of maize growth and development, in order to simulate crop response to irrigation with saline water in Mediterranean conditions. Changes from the original model consisted in modifying the estimation of the stress coefficient, which was defined as a function of predawn leaf water potential. The study was carried out at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari using a set-up of 30 drainage lysimeters. Linear regression between mean simulated and measured data showed that the model performed well for final grain yield though it tended to underestimate (∼ 8%) above-ground biomass and maximum LAI. The largest evapotranspiration over-estimations were found early in the growing season immediately after each irrigation event. However, the prediction of seasonal evapotranspiration was generally reasonably good.

This study analyses the role of variability induced by climate and soil properties (texture and total available soil water in the root zone, TAW) on the “corn deficit irrigation–water use efficiency” relation over a 25-year period, between 1981 and 2005, in three different sites located in the South of Italy. The analysis of water use efficiency was carried out by means of three indexes: crops water use efficiency (WUEET and WUET) and irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE). These indexes can be obtained by calculating the ratio between the yield and the seasonal values of evapotranspiration (ET), transpiration (T) and irrigation volume (I). After its validation, the STICS model was retained to simulate the variables required to determine these indexes. Climatic variability affected the three indexes in different ways during the 25-year period studied. The dispersion around the mean values of the water use efficiency is 17% on average for the WUE (ET or T) indexes, whereas it could reach 54% for the IWUE index. This last index is only poorly reliable due to the high variability of rainfall during the corn growing season in the Mediterranean region. For the same level of soil water deficit, TAW led to an improvement (the case of the site with a high TAW and loam–clay soil texture), a stabilisation (the case of the site with a high TAW and clay soil texture) or a decrease (the case of the site with a poor TAW and clay soil texture) in WUEET and WUET values. For the same conditions of soil water deficit and TAW, crops water use efficiency was higher in loam textured soil than in clay soil. The results derived by analyzing three indexes (WUEET, WUET and IWUE) converge to the same conclusions on the “corn deficit irrigation–water use efficiency” relation observed at the three different sites. The hypotheses which may explain the differences observed in the different sites studied in terms of water use efficiency are discussed, with the presentation of some suggestions devised for corn irrigation practices.

(Eds.); The publication is a synthesis of previous publications on the results of a long-term lysimeter experiment. From 1989 to 1998, the experimental variables were soil salinity and soil type, from 1999 onwards, soil salinity and crop variety. The plant was studied during the whole growing period by measuring the saline stress and analyzing its effect on leaf area and dry matter development and on crop yield. Salinity affected the pre-dawn leaf water potential, stomatal conductance, evapotranspiration, leaf area and yield. The following criteria were used for crop salt tolerance classification: soil salinity, evapotranspiration deficit, water stress day index. The classification according to soil salinity distinguished the salt tolerant group of sugar beet and wheat, the moderately salt sensitive group comprising broadbean, maize, potato, soybean, sunflower and tomato, and the salt sensitive group of chickpea and lentil. The results for the salt tolerant and the moderately salt sensitive groups correspond with the classification of Maas and Hoffman, excepted for soybean.The evapotranspiration deficit criterion was used, because for certain crops the relation between yield and evapotranspiration remains the same in case of drought and salinity. This criterion, however, did not appear useful for salt tolerance classification. The water stress day index, based on the pre-dawn leaf water potential, distinguished a tolerant group, comprising sugar beet, wheat, maize, sunflower and potato, and a sensitive group, comprising tomato, soybean, broadbean, chickpea and lentil. The classification corresponds with a difference in water use efficiency. The tolerant crops show a more or less constant water use efficiency. The sensitive crops show a decrease of the water use efficiency with increasing salinity, as their yield decreases stronger than the evapotranspiration. No correlation could be found between osmotic adjustment, leaf area and yield reduction. As the flowering period is a sensitive period for grain and fruit formation and the sensitive crops are all of indeterminate flowering, their longer flowering period could be a cause of their greater sensitivity. The tolerant group according to water stress day index can be divided according to soil salinity in a salt tolerant group of sugar beet and wheat and a moderately sensitive group, comprising maize, sunflower and potato. The difference in classification can be attributed to the difference in evaporative demand during the growing period. The sensitive group according to water stress day index can be divided according to soil salinity in a moderately sensitive group, comprising tomato, soybean and broadbean, and a salt sensitive group of chickpea and lentil. The difference in classification can be attributed to the greater salt sensitivity of the symbiosis between rhizobia and grain legume in the case of chickpea and lentil.

In two successive years, durum wheat ( Triticum turgidum Desf.) and barley ( Hodeum vulgare L.) were tested in a factorial salinity–drought experiment, combining three levels of salinity and two levels of drought. The two drought treatments were obtained by applying irrigation water when the pre-dawn leaf water potential of the control treatments attained values of −0.4 and −0.7 MPa, respectively. This experiment led to the analysis of the effects of salinity, of drought, and of the drought–salinity interaction on the grain and straw yield of the two crops studied. Salinity affected the durum wheat by reducing the grain and straw yields when the soil salinity (EC e ) was higher than 5.8 dS m −1 . This reduction was due to the fact that there were fewer grains per ear. As for barley, the grain yield was not reduced if EC e ranged from 0.9 to 9.8 dS m −1 , but the straw yield was affected. The results obtained for durum and barley are consistent with the observations reported in the literature. Drought affected the plant water status of both species during the ear formation and flowering stages. It reduced the grain (37%) and straw (18%) yields, on average, at the same rate for all salinity levels. These reductions were not related to the soil salinity levels. There were fewer ears per plant, explaining the decrease in crop productivity and water use efficiency in conditions of drought. Drought did not affect the relationship between soil salinity and relative yield.

The effect of soil texture on water use efficiency (WUE) was analyzed for six crops cultivated on loam and clay soils. Results were obtained after a long-term study, carried out in a lysimetric set-up, in conditions of experimental neutrality (climate, agro-techniques, and variety were the same for each crop) with the sole exception of the soil texture, which was the variable to be studied. In the case of potato, corn, sunflower, and sugar beet, WUE was reduced significantly when crops were grown in clay soil. The reductions ranged from 22% to 25%. The decrease of WUE in clay soil was coupled with significant reductions in yield and in ET, except in the case of the corn crop. The reduction in WUE in corn depended solely on the yield decrease. A 10% decrease in WUE values was also observed for the soy-bean and tomato grown in clay soil, but it was not statistically significant. Different causes which may reduce the WUE values observed in the clay soil are discussed. It seems coherent to hypothesize that, during the active growing phase, a deficit in water uptake occurs in the plants growing in the clay soil. This hypothesis is consistent with the observations of stomatal conductance, daily evapotranspiration, and leaf surface. In conclusion, the operative development of this study is outlined.

Chapter 2; Soybean was grown in a lysimeters filled with loam and clay soils and was irrigated with water having three different levels of salinity (fresh water, and saline waters with 15 and 30meq Cl/l). During the soybean crop cycle, soil salinity was determined from the salt balance. Leaf-water potential, stomatal conductance and actual evapotranspiration were used as the water-stress indicators. Growth was measured through leaf area and dry matter and, finally, the yield and its components were determined. The water use efficiency was also calculated. Without salt stress (treatments irrigated with fresh water), the effect of soil texture on the water relationship, productivity and water use efficiency of the soybean was not demonstrated. With salt stress, all the parameters, in both types of soil, were coherent, indicating systematic differences between the saline treatments and the control treatments (treatments irrigated with fresh water). Soil texture affects the soybean response to soil salinity. The saline treatments in the loam soil caused the values of the water stress indicators, of growth, of yield and of water use efficiency to be higher than the highest values observed for the same treatments on the clay soil. The analysis of the relationship between relative yield and soil salinity indicates clearly that soybean shows a higher salt tolerance if it is cultivated in loam soil.

Les stratégies s'articulent autour de 4 axes : problèmes liés au foncier et à la taille des exploitations, gestion des eaux, mise en valeur des terres, renforcement de la recherche et de la formation professionnelle. Au Nord, les Etats ont transféré une partie de leur politique agricole à l'échelon supranational c'est à dire communautaire. Ici, on vise l'amélioration de la productivité, la diversification des activités et des produits et le renforcement des ancrages dans les territoires. On a abouti ainsi à une PAC plus qualitative intégrant le soutien à la création d'entreprises, la valorisation des patrimoines, le développement du tourisme et des services. La lutte contre la pauvreté dans les campagnes constitue le premier axe stratégique des politiques de développement rural au Sud de la Méditerranée. L'un des volets déclinés dans les stratégies des pays de l'UE renforce les mesures de compensation de handicaps naturels et le maintien des activités dans las zones de montagne et de collines dans les pays méditerranéens. Pour répondre au défi de la durabilité, les PSEM ont mis en place un cadre législatif et réglementaire dont l'objectif est une meilleure gestion des ressources et la résolution des problèmes environnementaux. Dans le Nord, les orientations stratégiques de la Communauté depuis 2006 élargissent et renforcent une gestion durable des milieux naturels et des territoires ruraux. L'émergence des acteurs locaux est encore faible dans le sud tandis qu'il est structuré et diversifié au Nord. La question environnementale est au cœur de la coopération régionale méditerranéenne (eau, énergie, transports, mer et littoral…)

International audience; The 1st Workshop MELIA Project (Mediterranean Dialogue on Integrated Water Management, Contract FP6 517612) held in Hammamet-Médenine, Tunisia, 22 – 26 November 2007 succeeded to put together scientists, decision- and policy-makers, water users, relevant NGOs’ and Organisations from all the Mediterranean countries for discussing and sharing views and experiences on Water Culture and Prevention of Water Conflicts, considering terms from the historical, economical and social point of view, and the possible application of the principles of the Water Framework Directive. In particular, the Workshop gave inputs at the following issues: (i) Improvement of information and knowledge on past cultural heritage of water management in the Mediterranean countries; (ii) Evaluation of the cultural linkages between the traditional and the contemporary water management practices. Approach to the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) principles in the MPC in terms of the traditional principles and the principles of the Water Framework Directive, (iii) Debate on the perspectives of the New Water Culture in the Mediterranean basin; (iv) Historical analysis of the sources and management of water conflicts between competing groups and countries, (v) Assessment of the relations between water culture and water conflict in the Mediterranean, (vi) The use of the principles of the Water Framework Directive as a tool to handle Water Conflicts • Conceptual framework on Water Conflicts in the Mediterranean Area, (vii) Conceptual framework on Water Culture in the Mediterranean Area.

International audience; Depuis 2006, le CIHEAM, en partenariat et grâce au soutien financier de l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture (FAO), a travaillé à la création d’un centre de ressources afin de valoriser les produits et les savoirs faire locaux des zones de montagne en Méditerranée. Ce centre de ressources sur les produits de qualité de montagne s’est matérialisé dans la création d’une plateforme collaborative d’informations baptisée "Cybermontagne". L’objectif est d’accompagner des acteurs économiques ou institutionnels des pays méditerranéens dans la mise en valeur de produits et services de qualité et d’origine par la coordination de processus collaboratifs destinés à l’élaboration de qualifications et de mentions valorisantes. Le public visé est en premier lieu les cadres administratifs, les professionnels, les ONG ou les chercheurs.

Potato, maize, sunflower, sugar beet, soy-bean, and tomato were cultivated in a lysimeter set-up on two soil types, loam and clay, simultaneously during the same season Crops were grown under the same conditions of climate, mineral nutrition and plant density and were well-watered during the whole crop cycle.As for potato, sunflower and sugar beet, stomatal conductance, evapotranspiration, leaf area, yield, and radiation use efficiency (RUE) were systematically lower on clay than on loam. The other three species were not sensitive to soil texture, excepted for the yield of maize.The results cast doubt on RUE's values being independent from soil texture, as is commonly hypothesized by models simulating the productivity under well-watered conditions.

Encyclopedia on Water resources development and management in arid and semi-arid regions of the Arab world, Vol. 8, Abu Zeid, M., Hamdy, A. (Eds.); This publication is a complement to a previous publication on salt tolerance classification, using the observations of a long-term experiment on the use of saline water. Three classification methods were compared, based, respectively, on the electrical conductivity of the saturated paste extract, the relative evapotranspiration deficit and the water stress day index. Among the eight crops grown during the experiment, broadbean, soybean and tomato were clearly distinguished by the methods based on the relative evapotranspiration deficit and the water stress day index as more sensitive then durum wheat, maize, potato, sugar beet and sunflower. Their greater sensitivity may be explained by the salt sensitivity of rhizobium bacteria affecting the nitrogen supply, by the degree of osmotic adjustment or by the prolongation of the flowering period.

In various European countries, organic farming acts as a driving factor for territorial development, forminginitiatives like the Biovallée in France, Biodistretti in Italy or Bioregionen in Austria. These initiativesaspire to create ‘model regions’ for sustainable development not only in agriculture, but in a wider perspective.While the overall objective is similar for all approaches, the outcomes differ as our analysis of three European territories shows.63
