From classrooms and professional conferences to school board meetings, social media, and state legislatures, what was once described as a national conversation about censorship has escalated dramatically in recent years. [...]

The Journey (1991) is a virtually unknown 'struggle' novel by Frank Anthony (d. 1993), a senior member of the African People's Democratic Union of Southern Africa (APDUSA), who was incarcerated on Robben Island for six years. The novel and its author have been elided from South African history as a racialized literary establishment and the defensiveness of the resistance organization of which he was a member reinforced each other in tacit censorship. Anthony's novel presents revealing insights into the repression of the personal in the anti-apartheid movement, which reflected the 'liquidation' of love in leftist discourse of the period. The importance of love, especially romantic love--the highly volatile emotion which is often boundary-breaking and radically transformative--has been recognized in contemporary post-Marxism and critical race theory. Blindness to the potential of love in dominant struggle politics is reflected in the protagonist of The Journey, whose passion for social justice leads, paradoxically, to repression of the empowerment and emancipation of self(lessness) through other(s), enabled by eros. This study investigates how The Birth of a Nation's Canadian exhibition and reception shaped Canada's racial formation during a decisive period of nation building. The notoriously racist film took Canada by storm despite national mythologies founded on principles of equality and compassion. While Black Canadians grounded their protests against the film in patriotic ideals, white Canadians brandished those ideals as evidence of the protests' redundancy. Analyzing historical discourse in mainstream newspapers, the Black press, trade publications, and censorship documents, I investigate how seemingly benevolent, Canadian modalities of racism enabled this white-supremacist film to triumph north of the border. The internal 'impartial spectator,' as traced by Emily Chamlee-Wright through the work of Adam Smith, possesses an ability to resist external censors, if mature and self-regulating. Weakness in the 'impartial spectator,' however, opens the way to incursions of authoritarianism from others. This essay discusses how Geoffrey Chaucer's Manciple's Tale explores this relationship, predicting that a lack of self-control, i.e., a weak 'impartial spectator,' paradoxically leads to silence. The confusion between self-command and social punishment also explains the dynamics of 'privilege' call-out culture today, which has mistaken a tool of self-examination for an instrument of public castigation. In recent times, scholars have utilized their expertise in developing modules for social engineering, producing goods and services befitting the needs of a hyper-technologically savvy generation, and creating the atmosphere for civic participation in shaping the course of their everyday lives. Doris Lessing, ganadora del Premio Nobel de Literatura en 2007, es una escritora prolífica cuyo interés por temas sociales y políticos, junto a sus innovaciones en el tratamiento de los géneros y el estilo, la han convertido en una figura destacada del panorama literario inglés. En España, la obra de Lessing fue reconocida en 2001 cuando se le concedió el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras. Sin embargo, durante muchos años sus novelas no llegaron al lector español. La primera traducción al español de The Golden Notebook apareció en 1978, dieciséis años después de su publicación en Londres. ¿Por qué tardó tanto? ¿Ignoraron las editoriales españolas a Lessing en los años sesenta y setenta? ¿Chocaba su espíritu controvertido con los puntos de vista de la censura establecida por el régimen de Franco ? Este artículo tiene como objetivo explorar los expedientes de censura de la época con el fin de analizar las actitudes de los censores españoles hacia las novelas de Lessing. Estos expedientes proporcionan información muy valiosa sobre el interés de las editoriales y los libreros por la obra de Lessing, las ediciones publicadas o importadas en aquellos años y, lo que es más importante, las opiniones críticas de los censores sobre su narrativa. In Spain, her work was recognised in 2001 when she was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Letters. However, for years, some of her novels were practically unknown to Spanish readers. The first Spanish version of The Golden Notebook appeared in 1978, sixteen years after its publication in London. Why did it take so long? Did Spanish publishers ignore Lessing in the 1960s and 1970s? Did her controversial spirit clash with the traditional views of Franco's censors ? This article describes information found in censorship office files in an attempt to provide an explanation for the attitudes to Lessing's novels in the Franco era. They contain valuable data regarding publisher and bookseller interest in Lessing at the time, with reference to Spanish and imported editions of her work, and, more importantly, provide some insight into the censors' opinion of her fiction. Virtual community research argues that regulations restricting the kinds of speech in a virtual community decrease the utility to members. However, many virtual communities enact regulations on speech within the virtual community. This research explores the contradiction through a cross-case analysis of virtual communities. It explains the contradiction between research and practice using the theory of collective identity. Communication is important for creating collective identity in virtual communities. However, multiple collective identities can arise. When one collective identity within a virtual community defines itself as adversarial to another, silencing speech emerges as adversarial collective identity creates enduring noise and flames. When the target collective identity creates formal regulations suppressing the adversarial collective identity, communication to foster the target collective identity emerges.
