The rapid worldwide industrial growth in recent years has made water contamination by heavy metals a problem that requires an immediate solution. Several strategies have been proposed for the decontamination of wastewater in terms of heavy metal ions. Among these, methods utilizing adsorbent materials are preferred due to their cost-effectiveness, simplicity, effectiveness, and scalability for treating large volumes of contaminated water. In this context, heavy metal removal by hydrogels based on naturally occurring polymers is an attractive approach for industrial wastewater remediation as they offer significant advantages, such as an optimal safety profile, good biodegradability, and simple and low-cost procedures for their preparation. Hydrogels have the ability to absorb significant volumes of water, allowing for the effective removal of the dissolved pollutants. Furthermore, they can undergo surface chemical modifications which can further improve their ability to retain different environmental pollutants. This review aims to summarize recent advances in the application of hydrogels in the treatment of heavy metal-contaminated wastewater, particularly focusing on hydrogels based on cellulose and cellulose derivatives. The reported studies highlight how the adsorption properties of these materials can be widely modified, with a wide range of adsorption capacity for different heavy metal ions varying between 2.3 and 2240 mg/g. The possibility of developing new hydrogels with improved sorption performances is also discussed in the review, with the aim of improving their effective application in real scenarios, indicating future directions in the field. In this work, we prepared highly swelling, stimuli-responsive hydrogels capable of the highly efficient adsorption of inorganic pollutants. The hydrogels were based on hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) grafted with acrylamide (AM) and 3-sulfopropyl acrylate (SPA) and were synthesized via the growth (radical polymerization) of the grafted copolymer chains on HPMC, which was activated by radical oxidation. These grafted structures were crosslinked to an infinite network by a small amount of di-vinyl comonomer. HPMC was chosen as a cheap hydrophilic and naturally sourced polymer backbone, while AM and SPA were employed to preferentially bond coordinating and cationic inorganic pollutants, respectively. All the gels displayed a pronounced elastic character, as well as considerably high values of stress at break (several hundred %). The gel with the highest fraction of the ionic comonomer SPA (with an AM/SPA ratio = 0.5) displayed the highest equilibrium swelling ratio (12,100%), the highest volume response to temperature and pH, and the fastest swelling kinetics, but also the lowest modulus. The other gels (with AM/SPA = 1 and 2) displayed several times higher moduli but more modest pH responses and only very modest temperature sensitivity. Cr(VI) adsorption tests indicated that the prepared hydrogels removed this species from water very efficiently: between 90 and 96% in one step. The hydrogels with AM/SPA ratios of 0.5 and 1 appeared to be promising regenerable (via pH) materials for repeated Cr(VI) adsorption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the last years, hydrogels from renewable biopolymers and low-cost row materials are a hot topic for biomedical applications. In this context, cellulose nanofibrils are considered suitable building blocks for the synthesis of many biocompatible products, with a variety of chemical-physical properties. Herein we report a multi-technique and multi-scale study, from the molecular to the nanometric length scale, of the sol–gel transition observed in aqueous solutions of TEMPO-oxidized nano-sized cellulose fibrils (TOCNFs), when in the presence of polyvalent cations (Mg2+ and Ca2+). We combine the data from Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS), which provide information about the inner structure of the nanofibril, with those from UV Resonant Raman (UVRR) spectroscopy, which is a sensitive probe of the intra- and inter-molecular interactions in the gel and the liquid state. The transition between the gel and the liquid phases is investigated as a function of the concentration of both TOCNFs and cations, the nature of the latter, and the pH at which the phenomenon is observed. SANS analysis reveals that ion concentration induces an anisotropic swelling in the nanofibrils which, at the same time, become more and more flexible. The nanofibrils flexibility is also dependent on TOCNF concentration and pH value. UVRR allows us to elucidate the structural organization and hydrogen-bonding properties of water in aqueous TOCNF dispersions and gels, showing how water molecules partially lose their typical bulk-like tetrahedral organization when ions are added, and the gel phase is formed. Hydrogels possess remarkable physicochemical properties, including high water absorption, retention capacity, and controlled degradation. Simultaneously, their biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic nature makes them highly suitable for diverse water treatment applications, encompassing adsorption, filtration, and membrane separation. In this review, recent advancements in cellulose-based hydrogels, including methods of synthesis, modification, and characterization, are reviewed. Furthermore, the various applications of cellulose-based hydrogels in water treatment and purification are discussed in detail. This includes the adsorption of heavy metals, dyes, and organic pollutants, as well as membrane separation and desalination. The paper also highlights the challenges and opportunities for developing and utilizing sustainable cellulose-based hydrogels in water treatment and purification. Moreover, it offers a detailed and well-organized analysis of sustainable hydrogels made from cellulose by exploring their potential uses in water treatment and purification. It provides valuable insights into the potential use of cellulose-based hydrogels for sustainable and effective water treatment solutions. To face the increasing demand of self-healing hydrogels with biocompatibility and high performances, a new class of cellulose-based self-healing hydrogels are constructed through dynamic covalent acylhydrazone linkages. The carboxyethyl cellulose- graft-dithiodipropionate dihydrazide and dibenzaldehyde-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) are synthesized, and then the hydrogels are formed from their mixed solutions under 4-amino-DL-phenylalanine (4a-Phe) catalysis. The chemical structure, as well as microscopic morphologies, gelation times, mechanical and self-healing performances of the hydrogels are investigated with 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, rheological and compression measurements. Their gelation times can be controlled by varying the total polymer concentration or 4a-Phe content. The resulted hydrogels exhibit excellent self-healing ability with a high healing efficiency (≈96%) and good mechanical properties. Moreover, the hydrogels display pH/redox dual responsive sol-gel transition behaviors, and are applied successfully to the controlled release of doxorubicin. Importantly, benefitting from the excellent biocompatibility and the reversibly cross-linked networks, the hydrogels can function as suitable 3D culture scaffolds for L929 cells, leading to the encapsulated cells maintaining a high viability and proliferative capacity. Hydrogels a three-dimensional network structure of hydrophilic polymers have gained significant interest in the field of biomedicine due to its high-water absorption properties and its resemblance to the native extracellular matrix. However, the hydrogel's physicochemical properties are important in its ability to serve as a matrix in biomedical applications. The variations in the molecular weight of polymers in the preparation of crosslinked hydrogels may alter the properties. Different molecular weight carboxymethyl cellulose polymers were employed in this work to determine the effect of molecular weight on the physicochemical parameters of the hydrogel's crosslinking reaction. For this study, two distinct molecular weight carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) polymers (M w , 250,000 and 700,000) and various concentrations of crosslinker solution were used. The hydrogels were prepared through a chemical crosslinking reaction combining CMC and citric acid, which results in the formation of an ester bond between the two polymer chains. The crosslinking reaction is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and total carboxyl content analysis. According to the physicochemical, thermal, and mechanical analysis, we have identified that 7 %, 9 % and 10 % citric acid showed the most promising hydrogels and found 7CMC hydrogel had superior quality. In vitro results demonstrated that the citric acid crosslinked CMC had excellent hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Cellulose, the most abundant renewable polysaccharide on earth, has safe, biocompatible, hydrophilic and biodegradable natures, and is one of the best candidates for food packing and other functional materials. However, cellulose is hard to dissolve in most common solvents, which limited its development and application. In this paper, the quick dissolution of cellulose in NaOH/urea, NaOH/thiourea and LiOH/urea aqueous systems at the low temperature, as well as cellulose-based functional materials including fibers, films, membranes, microspheres, hydrogels and cellulose derivatives prepared via “green” process has been summarized. This review aims at highlighting on the recent researches and developments dealing with cellulose in our laboratory. About 84 literatures have been cited to describe the new aqueous cellulose solvents and functional materials and to discuss their wide applications in food packaging, separation technology, textile, and biomedicine and biology fields. To extend the applications of natural polymer-based hydrogels to wearable sensors, it is both important and a great challenge to improve their mechanical and electrical performance. In this work, highly stretchable, strain-sensitive, and ionic-conductive cellulose-based hydrogels (CHs) were prepared by random copolymerization of allyl cellulose and acrylic acid. The acquired hydrogels exhibit high stretchability (~142% of tensile strain) and good transparency (~86% at 550 nm). In addition, the hydrogels not only demonstrate better sensitivity in a wide linear range (0–100%) but also exhibit excellent repeatable and stable signals even after 1000 cycles. Notably, hydrogel-based wearable sensors were successfully constructed to detect human movements.
