The article presents the collection of contrafacta preserved in the archive of the abbey and parish church of St Daniel in Celje. It provides an overview of the models used, the modes and outcomes of the transformations and the possible position of the repertoire in the cultural space of Celje in the first half of the nineteenth century.

The paper presents the archaeological find of a medieval sword recovered from the riverbank deposits of the Voglajna near Bežigrad, northeast of Celje (Slovenia). The relatively well-preserved sword with a length of 95.2 cm and a mass of 765 g is part of the original collection of the Celje Regional Museum, to which it came before 1889. The shape and metric characteristics of the blade with a relatively wide fuller (Oakeshott’s Type X or Geibig’s Variant 5b) and the hilt with a short, straight crossguard and almond-shaped/lenticular pommel (Geibig’s combination Type 16 / Var. I (16-15-9-12)) show it to be an early example of swords with pommels of Oakeshott’s Type A, dating to the 11th or the first half of the 12th century. One side of the blade bears the remains of a 20 cm long sequence of inlaid iron marks, which remain indecipherable due to corrosion. The harmony of the parts seems to indicate a preserved original design, presumably produced by one of the sword workshops on the Middle Rhine. The findspot of the sword in the vicinity of Bežigrad, a topographically exposed and strategically important promontory near the intersection of the routes connecting Styria and Carniola, alerts to the possible existence of a military post that supplemented the control functions of the presumed early stronghold of the Margraves of the Savinja March on Zgornji (Stari) Grad in Celje. The find context of the sword places it in the predominant category of water finds, but the internal evidence (condition after conservation) of the weapon and the available data on the particular circumstances of the find do not provide sufficient support to explain the background of its sinking. Grofje Celjski so bili nedvomno najpomembnejša plemiška rodbina z izvorom na današnjem slovenskem ozemlju. Njihov meteorski vzpon je dosegel zenit s povišanjem v državne kneze leta 1436, vendar so že leta 1456 izumrli. Na višku moči so posedovali okrog 125 gradov, kar je bil rezultat več kot stoletja dolge načrtne grajske politike. Eden od načinov izražanja moči in prestiža so bile tudi reprezentativne zgradbe, obenem oblika dinastične propagande. Članek prikazuje nekatere prestižne zgradbe Celjskih: mestni grad v Celju, njihovo glavno rezidenco, dva strateška gradova na dostopih iz Italije (Vipava, Postojna), tri nove, ki so jih grofje zgradili v 15. stoletju (Bela Peč, Fridrihštajn, Mokrice), dva na prestižnih lokacijah na Koroškem (Landskron) oziroma pri Dunaju (Liechtenstein) in njihove mestne rezidence na Dunaju, v Zagrebu, Budimu in Beogradu.

The article deals with the entrepreneurial activity of the Westens from 1894, when Adolf Westen Sr established a company for the production of enamelware in Celje, to 1945, when the Communist authorities confiscated all their companies in Slovenia and elsewhere in Yugoslavia. The main emphasis of the article lies on the enamelware factory in Celje, which enabled the Westens to become leading industrialists. Moreover, the author gives an overview of their other companies in Slovenia or Yugoslavia and some other European countries. Furthermore, the article provides a general depiction of the Westens’ attitude towards their workers, Nazism and German occupier authorities, and the Liberation Front.

Before the Second World War, Celje with immediate surroundings had a population of 18,000 and was the economic, traffic, and cultural centre of the region. The city was well equipped also in terms of health care as it had three pharmacies as well as a health care centre, and a public hospital with maternity hospital. The circumstances changed with German invasion during the second world war. Germans reorganized health care service according to their regulations, thus organizing health care service in German style. All three pharmacies - albeit transferred to another owner - persevered, the health care centre was reformed into a regional health agency, whereas persons insured under health insurance fund were treated by private doctors or in a hospital. Barbara Celjska je bila gotovo najbogatejša alkimistka vseh časov. Prispevek skuša pojasniti kakšni poskusi so potekali v njenem laboratoriju in nakazati, katere tehniške kemijske naprave je utegnila pri tem uporabljati. Ker je bila večina le-teh iz zlahka lomljivih snovi, bi bilo njihovo iskanje bržkone brez haska, saj ni veliko upanja za njihovo ohranitev. Chemical Laboratory of Celje Queen (at 580th Anniversary of Bohemian coronation of Queen Barbara of Celje) Barbara of Cilli was certainly the richest female alchemist of all times. The article tries to explain what kind of experiments she carried out in her laboratory and indicate which technical chemical plant she likely has used. The major part her tools was made from easily breakable materials, therefore any contemporary pursuit to locate them will be probably in vain, because there is not much hope for their preservation.

This paper presents the results of the analysis of organic chemicals in different urban dusts. The aim of the researchis preliminary evaluation of the presence of organic contaminants in household dust, attic dust and streetsediment. Celje area has been chosen as a pilot study site due to availability of sampling materials from previoussampling campaigns. Samples have been tested to the presence of 120 organic compounds. Attic dust contains 98different organic compounds or 82 % of all measured. Terpenoids, alkylbenzenes and different Polycyclic AromaticHydrocarbons (PAH’s), as well as plasticizers, halogenated compounds (among them also PCB’s) and pesticides(DDT and degradation products) can be found there. It also contains all of the in this study analysed US-EPA prioritypollutants. Street dust contained 70 different organic chemicals (58 %), among them 14 priority pollutants. Tracesof aliphatic organic compounds, PAH’s, aldehydes and ketones, esters, and plasticizers are found there. House dustcontains lowest number of organic compounds. Among 45 detected (38 % of total measured), 8 are priority pollutants.Aliphatic compounds, alkylbenzenes, aldehides, ketones, acids and PAH’s can be found there. Current numberof analysed samples, as well as only qualitative evaluations were made does not allow making any solid interpretationof obtained results in regarding to the potential sources of chemicals or potential environmental hazards. Thisstudy can thus be used only as a guideline for future studies of organic chemicals in urban dusts.

Prispevek obravnava grafte kot vizualni element mestnega prostora. Namen raziskave je bil preučiti lokacije z grafti v Celju, cilj pa ugotoviti vpliv graftov na celjski mestni pros-tor. Obravnavane so lokacije, na katerih se nahajajo opazni, barviti in stilsko različni grafti. Gre za poseben tip graftov – subkulturne grafte oziroma writinge, ki v Celju prevladujejo. Avtorica se v raziskavi o graftih v Celju opira na informacije, pridobljene od ustvarjalcev graftov in prebivalcev mesta pri tem izpostavi opaženost graftov s strani prebivalcev.

The topic of this paper is contemporary tendencies and business trends in Slovenia, a country which left behind the period of crisis and by transforming its outdated and obsolete industry has overcome the period of transition. The paper deals with economy, industrial and economic solutions in Slovenia thanks to which this country has recovered from post-socialistic crisis and thus ranked among European and world's competitive countries. The examples of Maribor and Celje illustrate the fact that though medium sized centers, they can achieve good results by clever investment and planning. Serbia, which is still in the period of crisis, could be governed by the example of Slovenia on its path of development. This paper provides just some of the examples that Serbia could resort to. The issues which Serbia has been facing for a certain period of time could be overcome by adequate investment, building up of the infrastructure, economy transformation and industry modernization.

The research which included sampling of attic dust and soils in the town Celje has shown that the environment is contaminated with heavy metals, especially with zinc and cadmium. That is a consequence of 100 years of smelting the sphalerite ore in Cinkarna Celje. With the data, that includes concentration of heavy metals in the attic dust on 99 points and the weight of air deposit on 19 points in Celje and its suburbs, is possible to calculate the emissions of heavy metals in the environment. With the help from data of geochemical background is possible to estimate the anthropogenic emissions. The calculationsshow, that these emissions of zinc in Celje is 1712 tons and the natural background has been estimated at 207 tons. The similar proportion between anthropogenic and natural emissions can be seen at cadmium (9,1 tons of anthropogenic and 1,4 tons of natural cadmium). The opposite ratio is seen by elements whoose presence is influenced mainly by lithology, for example aluminium (1388 tons of anthropogenic and 11540 tons of natural aluminium.
