Abstract

The Human Genome Project (HGP) has made genomics a living, evolving paradigm for biotechnology and it may, through emerging genetic testing techniques and manipulation of genes, transform the practice of clinical medicine. The potential impact on drug discover/delivery is discussed. For the top 20 pharmaceutical companies to keep pace with Celera Genomics and such companies they will need to grow by 7%/yr and generate an extra $28.9 bil in sales on average from new products between early '01 and '05. They would need to launch at least 24-34 products earning $1-1.45 bil apiece in the next 5 years, up by a factor of 4-6. Self-cannibalization is the alternative to joining the genomics revolution. History and evolving goals and prospects of the HGP are summarized. .
