Introduction: Antimicrobial therapy plays a crucial role in the management of CDI patients. However, the standard agent for treating CDIs is limited to oral fidaxomicin or vancomycin. For patients made nil by mouth, there is a clinically urgent and essential need to develop an intravenous antibiotic. Methods: For C. difficile with the lowest MIC of nemonoxacin and vancomycin, the inhibitory effects were tested using the kinetic time-kill assay and ex vivo coculture model. The effectiveness of nemonoxacin and vancomycin in inhibiting spore germination, the sporicidal activity, and the treatment of mice with CDIs were compared. Results: For clinical isolates and laboratory strains, lower MICs of nemonoxacin against C. difficile than levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were observed, even in those harboring point mutations in the quinolone-resistance determining region. Although nemonoxacin failed to suppress spore outgrowth and germination in C. difficile, it exhibited an effective inhibitory effect against C. difficile in the kinetic time-kill assay and the ex vivo co-culture model. Mice receiving intraperitoneal nemonoxacin had less weight loss, higher cecum weight, a longer colon length, and lower expression of the tcdB gene, compared with untreated mice. Notably, there were no significant differences observed in weight loss, cecum weight, colon length, or tcdB gene expression between mice treated with vancomycin and those treated with any dose of nemonoxacin. Similarly, no significant differences were found between mice receiving combination therapy of intraperitoneal nemonoxacin plus oral vancomycin and those treated with intraperitoneal nemonoxacin or oral vancomycin alone. To study the effect of melatonin supplementation on the gut microbes of broilers, 160 healthy 3-week-old Ross 308 broilers with similar body weights were selected and randomly divided into four groups (M0, M20, M40, and M80) supplemented with 0, 20, 40, or 80 mg/kg melatonin. The results showed that the abundance-based coverage estimator (ACE) index of cecum microorganisms was significantly lower in the M80 group. The dominant phyla of intestinal contents in the M0, M20, M40, and M80 groups were Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. The M40 group showed an increase in the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes spp. in the intestine, while the relative abundance of Ruminococcus spp. in the intestine of the M20, M40, and M80 groups was significantly greater than that of the M0 group. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) functional analyses revealed that the supplementation of melatonin increases the expression of genes related to cellular processes (cell motility, cell growth and death, and cellular community-eukaryotes), environmental information processing (membrane transport and signal transduction), and genetic information processing (transport and transcription), and Cluster of Orthologous Groups (COG) of proteins functional analyses revealed that the supplementation of melatonin resulted in a significant increase in cellular processes and signaling (cell motility, signal transduction mechanisms, intracellular trafficking, secretion, and vesicular transport), information storage and processing (RNA processing and modification, chromatin structure and dynamics, translation, ribosomal structure, and biogenesis), metabolism (energy production and conversion, lipid transportation and metabolism, inorganic ion transport and metabolism, secondary metabolite biosynthesis, transport, and catabolism), and poorly characterized (general function prediction only). In summary, supplementation of feed with melatonin can increase the diversity of intestinal microorganisms and the relative abundance of Bacteroides and Firmicutes in the cecum, improve digestive ability and nutrient absorption ability, and positively regulate the metabolic ability of broilers. Closure of mucosal defects following colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (C‐ESD) is often performed to prevent post‐C‐ESD adverse events. However, large mucosal defect closure using conventional clips remains technically challenging. Here, we evaluated the feasibility of the novel endoclip with anchor prongs, called the MANTIS Clip (Boston Scientific, Tokyo, Japan), for mucosal defect closure after C‐ESD. This high‐volume retrospective study was conducted at a single center. From March until December 2023, consecutive patients who underwent post‐C‐ESD mucosal defect closure using MANTIS Clip to achieve complete closure were enrolled. Patient clinical characteristics and outcomes were evaluated. Closure of the mucosal defect using the MANTIS Clip was attempted following C‐ESD in 32 lesions. The median sizes of the resection specimens and the tumors were 32 mm (range, 17–100 mm) and 23.5 mm (range, 5–96 mm), respectively. The lesions were distributed between the cecum, ascending, transverse, descending, sigmoid, and rectum. Complete closure was achieved in 96.9% of cases (31/32). All lesions up to 61 mm in defect size were completely closed. The median closure time was 7.9 (range, 3.3–18.0) min. The median numbers of MANTIS Clip and additional conventional clips were 3 (range, 1–4) and 5 (range, 1–11), respectively. No adverse events associated with closure, post‐ESD bleeding, and delayed perforation occurred. MANTIS Clip closure for large post‐C‐ESD mucosal defects was found to be feasible and reliable with a high complete closure rate and a short procedure time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Necrotic enteritis is a serious disease in chickens caused by bacterium Clostridium perfringens, leading to high death rates, poor growth, and an economic loss of $6 billion annually worldwide. Currently, antibiotics are commonly used to treat the disease in chickens. However, the rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the growing demand for antibiotic-free poultry products highlights the need to explore sustainable alternatives. Our study investigated natural products of Nigella sativa (black cumin) and authentic kefir as sustainable options in reducing necrotic enteritis in chickens. An animal trial was conducted in which chickens were fed 5% black cumin seeds in their feed, 20% kefir in drinking water, and a combination of both during disease. The results showed that black cumin seeds, kefir, and their combination treatments did not have a detrimental impact on the growth of the chickens and successfully reduced infection and death rates, with the combination being the most effective. Therefore, Nigella sativa, kefir, and their combination can be used as sustainable alternatives to antibiotics in mitigating necrotic enteritis in chickens. Coccidiosis and necrotic enteritis (NE) are prevalent poultry ailments worldwide, leading to decreased live performance and elevated mortality rates without antibiotic usage. This study evaluated Nigella sativa (black cumin) seeds (BCS) and kefir as alternatives to antibiotics for broilers. An in vivo study over a 28-day period, using 384 Cobb 500 male broilers organized into six treatment groups as part of a completely randomized block experimental design was conducted. Each treatment group included eight replicates, with each replicate containing eight birds. The treatments included positive control, negative control, antibiotic control, 5% BCS in feed, 20% kefir in drinking water, and a combination of 5% BCS and 20% kefir. NE was induced in broilers by administering ~5000 oocysts of Eimeria maxima orally on day 14, followed by inoculation with about 108 CFU/mL of Clostridium perfringens (Cp) (strain Cp#4) on days 19, 20, and 21. Live performance metrics including feed intake, body weight gain, and feed conversion were assessed in broilers. Additionally, NE disease outcomes such as lesion scores, mortality rates, and Cp populations in cecum were determined during the study. The BCS, kefir, and the combination had no detrimental effect on broiler live performance. BCS-treated and combination groups had lower NE scores (p > 0.05) in comparison to the positive control and exhibited no significant difference (p > 0.05) from antibiotic control. Additionally, treatment groups and antibiotic control were not significantly different (p > 0.05) in mortality, whereas the BCS and kefir combination significantly reduced (p < 0.05) mortality to 14.1% compared to 31.3% for the positive control. C. perfringens vegetative cells significantly decreased (p < 0.05) in treatments with BCS, kefir, and their combination on days 22 and 28 compared to the positive control. On day 22, Cp sores were significantly lower (p < 0.05) for the kefir and combination treatments compared to the positive control. In conclusion, BCS and kefir successfully reduced C. perfringens infection and mortality without any detrimental impact on broiler live performance with the combined treatment being the most effective. Purpose: Patients with Hirschsprung disease affecting the splenic flexure or more proximal segments present a surgical challenge. Mobilizing the transverse colon to the pelvis during a pull-through may obstruct the distal ileum, or the length may be insufficient to reach the lower pelvis. This retrospective study aimed to describe two surgical techniques that facilitate mobilization of the transverse colon and their outcome. Methods: We included patients operated on between April 2017 and April 2024 and analyzed sex, comorbidities, type of pull- through, age at pull-through, history of previous surgeries, cause of the proximal transverse colon pull-through, technique used (Deloyers or Turnbull), complications , postoperative outcome and follow-up. The first technique used was the maneuver described by Turnbull. This operation creates a mesenteric defect and mobilizes the colon into this mesenteric window at the distal ileum level. The second technique was described by Deloyers and involves a 180-degree rotation of the right colon by dissecting the right colon attachment and the hepatocolic ligament. The cecum and the ileocecal valve are placed in the right upper quadrant, and the distal colon is mobilized into the pelvis. Results: We included 13 patients, 12 boys and 1 girl. Eight patients had previous surgeries in another hospital: five had an initial transverse colostomy, and three had an ileostomy. The remaining five had the initial operation in our hospital: two had an ileostomy, two had a colostomy, and one had a primary pull-through. The median age at pull-through was 16 months (4–59 months). We used the Turnbull technique in four patients whose aganglionosis was limited to the middle transverse colon. The Deloyers technique was used in the remaining patients, with ganglion cells in the proximal transverse colon. We left a protective ileostomy in five patients. The median follow-up was 4.5 years (3 months to 10 years). The stoma takedown is pending in one patient. Conclusion: The Turnbull and Deloyers techniques were helpful in patients with aganglionosis affecting the transverse colon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a major cause of healthcare-associated gastrointestinal infections1,2. The exaggerated colonic inflammation caused by C. difficile toxins such as toxin B (TcdB) damages tissues and promotes C. difficile colonization3-6, but how TcdB causes inflammation is unclear. Here we report that TcdB induces neurogenic inflammation by targeting gut-innervating afferent neurons and pericytes through receptors, including the Frizzled receptors (FZD1, FZD2 and FZD7) in neurons and chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan 4 (CSPG4) in pericytes. TcdB stimulates the secretion of the neuropeptides substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) from neurons and pro-inflammatory cytokines from pericytes. Targeted delivery of the TcdB enzymatic domain, through fusion with a detoxified diphtheria toxin, into peptidergic sensory neurons that express exogeneous diphtheria toxin receptor (an approach we term toxogenetics) is sufficient to induce neurogenic inflammation and recapitulates major colonic histopathology associated with CDI. Conversely, mice lacking SP, CGRP or the SP receptor (neurokinin 1 receptor) show reduced pathology in both models of caecal TcdB injection and CDI. Blocking SP or CGRP signalling reduces tissue damage and C. difficile burden in mice infected with a standard C. difficile strain or with hypervirulent strains expressing the TcdB2 variant. Thus, targeting neurogenic inflammation provides a host-oriented therapeutic approach for treating CDI.

Microplastics, a new type of emerging pollutant, is ubiquitous in terrestrial and water environments. Microplastics have become a growing concern due to their impacts on the environment, animal, and human health. Birds also suffer from microplastics contamination. In this study, we examined the toxic effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) exposure on physical barrier, microbial community, and immune function in the cecum of a model bird species—Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). The one-week-old birds were fed on environmentally relevant concentrations of 20 µg/kg, 400 µg/kg, and 8 mg/kg PS-MPs in the diet for 5 weeks. The results showed that microplastics could cause microstructural damages characterized by lamina propria damage and epithelial cell vacuolation and ultrastructural injuries including microvilli breakage and disarrangement as well as mitochondrial vacuolation in the cecum of quails. In particular, blurry tight junctions, wider desmosomes spacing, and gene expression alteration indicated cecal tight junction malfunction. Moreover, mucous layer breakdown and mucin decrease indicated that chemical barrier was disturbed by PS-MPs. PS-MPs also changed cecal microbial diversity. In addition, structural deformation of cecal tonsils and increasing proinflammatory cytokines suggested cecal immune disorder and inflammation responses by PS-MPs exposure. Bacteria of the genus Brachyspira can cause enteric diseases in birds; thus, this study evaluated the efficacy of the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technique for the identification of B. pilosicoli, B. hyodysenteriae and B. intermedia using cecum samples fixed in formaldehyde from laying hens and commercial broiler breeders. Samples were collected from 112 birds aged between 35 and 82 weeks that originated from commercial laying and broilers farms. For the initial evaluation, spirochaetes were isolated from the cloacal swabs. positive samples were analysed using qpCR to identify pathogenic species. Formalized cecum segments of these same birds were then analyzed using the FISH technique with labelled probes specific to B. pilosicoli, B. hyodysenteriae and B. intermedia. Forty isolates characteristic of Brachyspira were obtained, of which 14 were identified as B. hyodysenteriae and seven were identified as B. intermedia by qpCR; two samples were positive for both species, and 21 were not characterized. Using the FISH technique, 52 samples were positive for Brachyspira spp., 22 were positive for B. hyodysenteriae, 28 were positive for B. intermedia, seven were positive for B. pilosicoli, and eight were positive for two species. The FISH technique was able to identify significantly more positive birds compared with bacterial isolation followed by qPCR. Thus, it is concluded that the FISH technique was effective for identifying the three Brachyspira species evaluated and can thus be used as a rapid and effective diagnostic tool. The main functions of the mammalian cecum include microbial digestion of soluble and insoluble carbohydrates and the absorption of significant amounts of water and electrolytes. The present study was carried out to investigate the gross anatomy and electron microscopy of the cecum in adult camels (Camelus dromedarius), which still needs to be clarified. The study was conducted using samples collected from camels slaughtered at an abattoir in Omdurman, Sudan. The camel cecum, which occupied the right part of the abdomen, was situated caudally to the abomasum and directed caudally to the pelvis. It was short and S-shaped and began largely at the ceco-colic junction at the level of the fifth lumbar vertebra and became smaller towards its apex. Morphometrically, camel cecum constituted 3.2% of the large intestine length, 1% of both the small intestine and large intestine length, and 0.10% of the long axis of the animal body. Ultra-structurally, the cecal mucosa showed several folds and was lined by a simple columnar epithelium with many intestinal cells (enterocytes) and goblet cells; two types of enterocytes were shown: type one contained a dark cytoplasm and type two had a light cytoplasm. In conclusion, the cecum in dromedary camels was generally similar in structure to other domestic animals; however, they have a shorter cecum compared to ruminants.

Introduction: Colon volvulus is the twisting of a segment of colon on its mesenteric axis, which can lead to the obstruction of the lumen and the blood supply. Colon volvulus is common in "volvulus belt" countries and can involve the sigmoid (60–70%) and cecum (25–40%). Case presentation: We report a case of a 47-year-old male, Alawites, who presented with bowel obstruction and dilated abdomen without any specific abdominal pain. Abdominal laparotomy showed both sigmoid and cecum volvulus with no signs of perforation or ischemia. Discussion and conclusion: One of the possible risk factors of sigmoid colon volvulus is the length of the rectum and sigmoid, while mobile cecum is considered as a possible reason for cecum volvulus. The management remains controversial and is specific for every case, depending mainly on the vitality of the colonic walls and the general condition of the patient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The administration of antibiotics can expose the digestive microbiota of humans and animals to sub-inhibitory concentrations, potentially favouring the selection of resistant bacteria. The minimal selective concentration (MSC) is a key indicator to understand this process. The MSC is defined as the lowest concentration of an antibiotic that promotes the growth of a resistant strain over a susceptible isogenic strain. It represents the lower limit of the sub-minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) selective window, where resistant mutants can be selected. Previous studies focused on determining the MSC under standard culture conditions, whereas our research aimed to determine the MSC in a model that approximates in vivo conditions. Methods: We investigated the MSC of oxytetracycline (OTC) in Mueller-Hinton broth (MHB) and sterilised intestinal contents (SIC) from the jejunum, caecum and rectum (faeces) of pigs, using two isogenic strains of Escherichia coli (one susceptible and one resistant to OTC). Additionally, the MIC of OTC against the susceptible strain was determined to assess the upper limit of the sub-MIC selective window. Results: Our study took a novel approach, and the results indicated that MIC and MSC values were lower in MHB than in SIC. In the latter, these values varied depending on the intestinal segment, with distal compartments exhibiting higher MIC and MSC values. Moreover, the sub-MIC selective window of OTC in SIC narrowed from the jejunum to the rectum, with a significantly closer MSC to MIC in faecal SIC. Discussion: The results suggest that OTC binds to digestive contents, reducing the fraction of free OTC. However, binding alone does not fully explain our results, and interactions between bacteria and intestinal contents may play a role. Furthermore, our findings provide initial estimates of low concentrations facilitating resistance selection in the gut. Finally, this research enhances the understanding of antimicrobial resistance selection, emphasising the intricate interplay between antibiotics and intestinal content composition in assessing the risk of resistance development in the gut. The Cecum is a key site for cellulose digestion in nutrient metabolism of intestine, but its mechanisms of microbial and gene interactions has not been fully elucidated during pathogenesis of obesity. Therefore, the cecum tissues of the New Zealand rabbits and their contents between the high-fat diet-induced group (Ob) and control group (Co) were collected and analyzed using multi-omics. The metagenomic analysis indicated that the relative abundances of Corallococcus_sp._CAG:1435 and Flavobacteriales bacterium species were significantly lower, while those of Akkermansia glycaniphila, Clostridium_sp._CAG:793, Mycoplasma_sp._CAG:776, Mycoplasma_sp._CAG:472, Clostridium_sp._CAG:609, Akkermansia_sp._KLE1605, Clostridium_sp._CAG:508, and Firmicutes_bacterium_CAG:460 species were significantly higher in the Ob as compared to those in Co. Transcriptomic sequencing results showed that the differentially upregulated genes were mainly enriched in pathways, including calcium signaling pathway, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, and Wnt signaling pathway, while the differentially downregulated genes were mainly enriched in pathways of NF-kappaB signaling pathway and T cell receptor signaling pathway. The comparative analysis of metabolites showed that the glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism and cysteine and methionine metabolism were the important metabolic pathways between the two groups. The combined analysis showed that CAMK1, IGFBP6, and IGFBP4 genes were highly correlated with Clostridium_sp._CAG:793, and Akkermansia_glycaniphila species. Thus, the preliminary study elucidated the microbial and gene interactions in cecum of obese rabbit and provided a basis for further studies in intestinal intervention for human obesity. BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSION Saccharomyces cerevisiae CECA was a potential indigenous Chinese wine yeast that can produce aroma and flavor in Cabernet Sauvignon wines. High‐throughput sequencing combined with metabolite analysis was applied to analyze the effects of CECA inoculation on the native microbial community interaction and metabolism during Cabernet Sauvignon wine fermentation.Fermentations were performed with three different inoculant strategies: spontaneous fermentation without inoculation, inoculation with CECA after grape must sterilization, and direct inoculation of CECA. Results showed that the diversity of bacteria (P = 0.033) is more sensitive to CECA inoculation than fungi (P = 0.563). In addition, CECA inoculation altered the species composition of core microorganisms (relative abundance >1%) and the keystone species (accounting for the top 1% of the most important interactions), as well as of the biomarkers (linear discriminant analysis > 3.0, P < 0.05). Furthermore, the inoculation could change the cluster of metabolites, and these differential metabolite sets were correlated with four fungal taxa of Issatchenkia, Issatchenkia orientalis, Saccharomycetales, Saccharomycetes and two bacterial taxa of Pantoea, Tatumella ptyseos, were significantly correlated. Inoculated fermentation also altered the correlation between dominant microorganisms and aroma compounds, giving Cabernet Sauvignon wines more herbal, floral, fruity, and cheesy aromas.Saccharomyces cerevisiae CECA and dimethyl dicarbonate (DMDC) inhibition treatments significantly altered the microbial community structure of Cabernet Sauvignon wines, which in turn affected the microbial‐metabolite correlation. Microbiome research has gained much attention in recent years as the importance of gut microbiota in regulating host health becomes increasingly evident. However, the impact of radiation on the microbiota in the murine bone marrow transplantation model is still poorly understood. In this paper, we present key findings from our study on how radiation, followed by bone marrow transplantation with or without T cell depletion, impacts the microbiota in the ileum and caecum. Our findings show that radiation has different effects on the microbiota of the two intestinal regions, with the caecum showing increased interindividual variation, suggesting an impaired ability of the host to regulate microbial symbionts, consistent with the Anna Karenina principle. Additionally, we observed changes in the ileum composition, including an increase in bacterial taxa that are important modulators of host health, such as Akkermansia and Faecalibaculum. In contrast, radiation in the caecum was associated with an increased abundance of several common commensal taxa in the gut, including Lachnospiraceae and Bacteroides. Finally, we found that high doses of radiation had more substantial effects on the caecal microbiota of the T-cell-depleted group than that of the non-T-cell-depleted group. Overall, our results contribute to a better understanding of the complex relationship between radiation and the gut microbiota in the context of bone marrow transplantation and highlight the importance of considering different intestinal regions when studying microbiome responses to environmental stressors. Background: Ileocolic intussusception is a rare condition that is difficult to diagnose. A pathological lead point, usually malignant, is often the cause of adult intussusception. In emergency scenarios, radiologists must be able to identify this entity and its causes and express their opinions on associated complications. Case presentation: The hospital's emergency room admitted a 75-year-old woman who was suffering from intermittent abdominal pain and constipation. An abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a long giant ileocolic intussusception. Considering the clinical stability and the absence of signs of complications on CT, the patient did not undergo an urgent surgical procedure but underwent a colonoscopy the following day. Surprisingly, the colonoscopy highlighted the spontaneous resolution and revealed the presence of the three tumour lead points in the cecum and ascending colon. A CT was performed after the colonoscopy, confirming the intussusception's resolution. The surgeon performed a right oncological hemicolectomy. The malignant lead points on histological examination were moderate to poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas. Conclusions: A giant and long ileocolic intussusception with a long embedded visceral segment (the python colon sign) could suggest pathological lead points in the cecum and ascending colon. Despite the large size, a spontaneous resolution of the python colon is possible. In this scenario, even if, on imaging, it is impossible to macroscopically identify a lead point, in cases of giant and long ileocolic intussusceptions, every effort must be undertaken to search for the cause of the intussusception. Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the differential expression of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) gene region in Eimeria-infected broiler. Methods: We profiled gene expression of Eimeria-infected and uninfected ceca of broilers sampled at 4, 7, and 21 days post-infection (dpi) using RNA sequencing. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between two sample groups were identified at each time point. DEGs located on chicken chromosome 16 were used for further analysis. Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis was conducted for the functional annotation of DEGs. Results: Fourteen significant (false discovery rate <0.1) DEGs were identified at 4 and 7 dpi and categorized into three groups: MHC-Y class I genes, MHC-B region genes, and non-MHC genes. In Eimeria-infected broilers, MHC-Y class I genes were upregulated at 4 dpi but downregulated at 7 dpi. This result implies that MHC-Y class I genes initially activated an immune response, which was then suppressed by Eimeria. Of the MHC-B region genes, the DMB1 gene was upregulated, and TAP-related genes significantly implemented antigen processing for MHC class I at 4 dpi, which was supported by KEGG pathway analysis. Conclusion: This study is the first to investigate MHC gene responses to coccidia infection in chickens using RNA sequencing. Purpose: Right‐sided diverticulitis is a rare entity in North Africa. Therefore, it is usually misdiagnosed, and the management of cecal diverticulitis is aggressive in most cases, whereas nowadays, most studies recommend a conservative approach with promising results. This study aims to describe the presentation, management, and outcomes of right‐sided diverticulitis (RSD) and to present the experience of one surgical center in Tunisia. Methods: This is a retrospective study including all patients presented with RSD, in the Department of Surgery "A" of the Charles Nicolle Hospital between 2007 and 2021. Results: Forty patients were included in our study. The mean age was 42 years with a standard deviation of 14. The sex ratio was 1.1. Only 2 patients had chronic constipation. All patients presented right‐sided abdominal pain, and only 3 patients had diarrhea. Twenty one patients were diagnosed during surgery. Fourteen patients were treated successfully by conservative management. An operative procedure was performed in 26 cases: 21 had a diverticulectomy (80%), two had an ileal resection (8%), and three had a right colectomy (11.5%). No postoperative events occurred with a short hospital stay (5 ± 3 days). Follow‐up showed no recurrences. Conclusion: Right‐sided diverticulitis has a lower incidence and complication rate compared to left‐sided diverticulitis. Background: Empty Pelvis Syndrome, subsequent to the removal of pelvic organs, results in the descent of the small bowel into an inflamed pelvic cavity, leading to the formation of adhesions and subsequent small bowel obstruction. However, no effective measures have been previously described. Objective: Describe a simple and autologous solution to prevent "Empty Pelvis Syndrome," small bowel obstruction, and adhesions by utilizing the cecum to occlude the pelvis. Design: Mobilization of the right colon to lower the cecum into the pelvic cavity to occlude the superior pelvic ring to some degree and changing the direction of the terminal ileum. Settings: Hospital Universitario Fundación Jiménez Díaz, Department of General Surgery, Colorectal Service. Patients: Eight anonymized patients were included in this study, each with varying colorectal pathologies. Patients were above 18 years old. Main outcome measures: Percent of blockage of the superior pelvic ring produced by the descended cecum recorded in percentage; the amount of small intestine descended past the superior pelvic ring recorded in cm. Results: The mobilization of the cecum achieved partial occlusion of the superior pelvic ring. The descent of the small bowel beyond this landmark ranged from 0 to 4.9 cm. Limitations: Given the small number of patients included in this study, these results cannot be generalized to the whole of the population. A bladder emptying protocol prior to CT scans was not implemented, resulting in variations in measurements among patients. Conclusion: The cecum-to-pelvis technique is a simple method that can serve as an autologous solution to EPS (enteropelvic fistula) and help reduce postoperative complications such as SBO (small bowel obstruction) and adhesions. Coccidiosis, an intestinal disease caused by Eimeria parasites, is responsible for major losses in the poultry industry by impacting chicken health. The gut microbiota is associated with health factors, such as nutrient exchange and immune system modulation, requiring understanding on the effects of Eimeria infection on the gut microbiota. This study aimed to determine the effects of Eimeria acervulina infection on the luminal and mucosal microbiota of the cecum (CeL and CeM) and ileum (IlL and IlM) at multiple time points (days 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14) post-infection. E. acervulina infection decreased evenness in CeL microbiota at day 10, increased richness in CeM microbiota at day 3 before decreasing richness at day 14, and decreased richness in IlL microbiota from day 3 to 10. CeL, CeM, and IlL microbiota differed between infected and control birds based on beta diversity at varying time points. Infection reduced relative abundance of bacterial taxa and some predicted metabolic pathways known for short-chain fatty acid production in CeL, CeM, and IlL microbiota, but further understanding of metabolic function is required. Despite E. acervulina primarily targeting the duodenum, our findings demonstrate the infection can impact bacterial diversity and abundance in the cecal and ileal microbiota. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Colonic manometry (CM) is a diagnostic procedure utilized in the evaluation of intractable constipation and involves endoscopic insertion of a manometry catheter with the tip placed in the cecum. Difficulty in advancing the colonic manometry catheter to the right colon and/or distal displacement of the catheter after appropriate placement can result in partial evaluation of the colon. Our study aimed to assess the value of limited left CM in identifying motility disorders. Methods: We evaluated CM studies conducted at a tertiary pediatric center (2019–2022). Abnormal CM studies with catheter tips located in the cecum or ascending colon were included. Key Results: Of 161 CM studied, 68 with abnormal CM studies met inclusion criteria (29 [42.7%] females, median age 10.3 years). Pan‐colonic dysmotility was noted in 29 (42.7%) studies and segmental dysmotility in 39 (57.4%) studies. Dysmotility of the descending and/or sigmoid colon was the most common segmental dysmotility (30, 76.9%). Isolated dysmotility of the ascending colon was noted only in patients with a cecostomy (6/13, 46.2%). The diagnostic sensitivity for dysmotility by left CM was 91.2%, which increased to 100% when excluding patients with cecostomy. Conclusions and Inferences: Left CM is a valuable and sensitive diagnostic tool for identifying abnormal colonic motility in most pediatric patients with constipation without cecostomy. Our study results provide reassurance when the manometry catheter becomes dislodged from the cecum and moves distally. This study aimed at investigating the effect of hydrolyzed soya lecithin; also called lysolecithin or lysophosphatidylcholine, on growth performance, caecal microbiota and fat depots in pre‐breeding primiparous rabbits does. For this, 60 V‐Line primiparous rabbits does (5–6 months) were used in a 30‐day experiment. Does were allotted into three iso‐nitrogenous iso‐caloric dietary treatments (n = 20/group) as follows: (1) CON received 0% soya lecithin, (2) LECL group was fed a basal diet supplemented with 0.5% soya lecithin and (3) LECH group was fed a basal diet supplemented with 1% soya lecithin. Growth performance indices were measured, caecum samples were collected for measurement of specific bacteria via qPCR, and several fat depots including periovarian fat were sampled for adipocyte morphometry and fatty acid profiling. Statistical analysis was performed using GLM procedures of SAS v9.4. Soya lecithin increased feed intake (p < 0.05). The abundance of caecal Bifidobacteria species, Ruminococcus species and phylum Butryvibrio‐specific genes increased (p < 0.05) in rabbits receiving soya lecithin in their diet, soya lecithin increased the level of polyunsaturated fatty acids in subcutaneous and perirenal fat (p < 0.05) and increased the level of monounsaturated fatty acids in periovarian fat (p < 0.05); additionally, the adipocyte area increased in periovarian and perirenal fat (p < 0.05). In conclusion, soya lecithin at a dose of 0.5% increased feed intake and energy storage in adipocytes and improved the fatty acid profile of periovarian fat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cecal bascule, a rare subtype of cecal volvulus, presents diagnostic and management challenges. We report a case of cecal bascule presenting as an internal hernia in a 68-year-old male with no surgical history. Computed tomography revealed two areas of mesenteric swirling and a displaced cecum. Prompt surgical intervention included laparoscopic exploration, resection of a necrotic adhesive band, and cecopexy. This case is noteworthy because of the absence of predisposing factors like prior surgeries or inflammatory conditions. Management options for cecal bascule include resection and cecopexy, tailored to individual patient factors. Awareness among healthcare providers is crucial for the timely recognition and appropriate management of such cases. The gastric caecum and the pylorus of Halyomorpha halys (Stål, 1855) (Hemiptera, Pentatomidae) was examined morphologically and histologically with stereomicroscopic, light microscopic, and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) techiques in this study. H. halys is a polyphagous species that feeds mainly on plants of the Rosaceae and Fabaceae families and agricultural areas and can cause massive damages on them. Three distinct areas comprise H. halys's digestive tract. The pylorus is the first section of the hindgut, and the gastric caecum of H. halys is seen at the posterior end of the second region known as the midgut. In comparison to other insect species in the order Hemiptera and other insect groups, it can be easily stated that their structure is generally close to many species belonging to this order. An 8‐year‐old cat was presented for an acute history of anorexia, marked abdominal pain, and hyperthermia. Ultrasonography showed a cecal perforation with focal steatitis and adjacent free gas bubbles, consistent with focal peritonitis. Surgery confirmed the imaging findings. An enterectomy was performed with the removal of the cecum and ileocolic valve, and anastomosis between the ileum and colon was performed. Appendiceal diverticulitis is an uncommon condition that clinically resembles acute appendicitis. However, it is an incidental finding in histopathological studies and is rarely diagnosed preoperatively by imaging studies. In this article, we present the clinical and imaging findings of a male patient presenting with right upper quadrant pain with a preoperative imaging diagnosis of appendiceal diverticulitis. He underwent laparoscopic appendectomy and confirmed the diagnosis of appendiceal diverticulitis. This is a rare preoperative diagnosis. The management is often like typical appendicitis which is appendectomy. During industrial processing, heat treatments applied to infant formulas may affect protein digestion. Recently, innovative processing routes have been developed to produce minimally heat-processed infant formula. Our objective was to compare the in vivo protein digestion kinetics and protein quality of a minimally processed (T−) and a heat-treated (T+++) infant formula. Sixty-eight male Wistar rats (21 d) were fed with either a diet containing 40 % T− (n 30) or T+++ (n 30), or a milk protein control diet (n 8) during 2 weeks. T− and T+++ rats were then sequentially euthanised 0, 1, 2, 3 or 6 h (n 6/time point) after ingestion of a meal containing their experimental diet. Control rats were euthanised 6 h after ingestion of a protein-free meal to determine nitrogen and amino acid endogenous losses. Nitrogen and amino acid true caecal digestibility was high for both T− and T+++ diets (> 90 %), but a tendency towards higher nitrogen digestibility was observed for the T− diet (96·6 ± 3·1 %) compared with the T+++ diet (91·9 ± 5·4 %, P = 0·0891). This slightly increased digestibility led to a greater increase in total amino acid concentration in plasma after ingestion of the T− diet (P = 0·0010). Comparable protein quality between the two infant formulas was found with a digestible indispensable amino acid score of 0·8. In conclusion, this study showed that minimal processing routes to produce native infant formula do not modify protein quality but tend to enhance its true nitrogen digestibility and increase postprandial plasma amino acid kinetics in rats. Aim: Creation of an overlapped anastomosis using handsewn sutures for common enterotomy is very popular in robotic right colectomy (RRC) with intracorpareal anastomosis (IA). The aim of this study is to present a simple method for constructing a sutureless overlapped anastomosis using a 60 mm linear stapler with a reinforced bioabsorbable material in RRC with IA. Method: The distal ileum and proximal colon were put in overlapping positions. Enterotomies were created 2 cm proximal to the ileal stump and 8 cm distal to the colonic stump on the antimesenteric side. Subsequently, a 60 mm linear stapler with a reinforced bioabsorbable material was inserted into each lumen and fired. Finally, the bowel was elevated while holding the bioabsorbable material, and the common enterotomy was grasped with the robotic instrument in the middle and closed using a linear stapler with a reinforced bioabsorbable material. Results: This technique was applied to 10 patients with tumours of the caecum, ascending colon, or transverse colon. The median operating time, anastomosis construction time, blood loss, and postoperative stay were 281 min (range 228–459 min), 12 min (range 11–17 min), 10 mL (range 0–110 mL), and 10 days (range 8–15 days), respectively. No adverse intraoperative events were observed. Postoperatively, one patient developed chylous ascites, but there were no other complications. Conclusion: The simple technique for constructing a sutureless overlapped anastomosis using a 60 mm linear stapler with a reinforced bioabsorbable material in robotic right colectomy with intracorporeal anastomosis appears to be safe and feasible. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different sources of insoluble fiber on performance, gastrointestinal tract characteristics, and nutrient digestibility in the broiler's ileum, and cecum. A total of 380-day-old chickens of ross 308 unsexed were arranged into 5 treatments, 4 replicates, and 19 chickens in each, by completely randomized design (CRD). Experimental treatments included 1: control (corn-soybean meal) 2: arbocel (synthetic fiber) 1% in diet, 3: sunflower hulls (3% in diet), 4: soybean hull (3% in diet), 5: processed wheat straw (3%in diet). Observed parameter include: performance (feed intake, feed conversion ratio and body weight gain), gastrointestinal pH, gastrointestinal viscosity and digestibility of dry matter and protein in ileum and cecum and microbial population in ileum and cecum. The results have shown that the inclusion of 3% sunflower hulls in diets leads to the higher average feed intake from 1 to 10 days of age rather than control (P<0.05). In comparison between the ileum and cecum showed that the higher viscosity by Arbocel® in the cecum and the lowest viscosity showed by wheat straw in the ileum (P<0.05). On the other hand, the digestibility of protein and dry matter in the ileum was higher than the cecum (P<0.05). According to the results of this study, it could be noted that all fibers are considered insoluble fibers and their different behavior in the gastrointestinal tract. The diet Arbocel® has generally led to physicochemical changes (digesta pH and viscosity) and microbial populations. It could be the most important reason for these observations which is related to insoluble fiber particle size and their processing. In addition, reduced dry matter and protein digestibility in the cecum in comparison to the ileum status. Background: Incidence of detection of colorectal polyp is increasing in recent years. But factors associated with malignant potentiality of colorectal polyp is largely unknown. Aims of the study: The aim of this study was to correlate patient age and colonic polyp size with malignant potentiality. Materials and methods: This was an observational cross sectional study, carried out in Gastroenterology department of Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Dhaka cantonment in between January to December 2019. Total 240 patients were included in the study, whose underwent colonoscopy, had colonic polyps and polyp biopsy was done. Data was collected and analyzed by using SPSS 20 and obtained in tables and diagrams. Results: Out of 240 patients male 165(68.7%), female 75(31.3%) with male to female ratio 2.5:1; mean age±SD 53.3±15.4 years; below 40 years 43 (17.9%), 40-60 years 102 (42.5%) and above 60 years 95(39.6%); 92 (38.3%) patients had different co-morbidity including 39 (16.3%) had multiple co-morbidity; colonic polyps found in caecum 32(13.3%), ascending colon 14 (5.8%), transverse colon 8(3.3%), descending colon 20(8.3%), sigmoid colon 32(13.3%), rectum 104 (43.3%), and multiple sites 30(12.5%);180(75.0%) polyps were sessile and 60(25.0%) pedunculated with minimum size 3mm and maximum 21mm in diameter; polyps were of neoplastic 91(37.9%), hyperplastic 18 (7.5%), and inflammatory 131(54.6%); among neoplastic polyps 83(34.6%) benign and 8(3.3%) malignant; among neoplastic polyps mild dysplasia 66(72.5%), moderate dysplasia 17(18.7%) and severe dysplasia 8(8.8%); polyps larger than 10mm size were associated with increasing degree of dysplasia, odds ratio (OR) 9.2; 95% CI (2.9 to 29.1), p value < .001; patients of more than 60 years of age were also more associated with increasing degree of polyp dysplasia, odds ratio 3.5; 95% CI (1.3 to 9.2), p value .01. Summary: A 19‐year‐old Rocky Mountain Horse gelding was presented for emergency evaluation of colic. A pedunculated lipoma was found to be strangulating the caecum and ileocaecal junction at surgery. Following the resolution of the incarceration, it was found that the pedicle originated on the jejunal mesentery, but the stalk did not appear long enough to have formed a half‐hitch around both the caecum and ileum. The horse was euthanised due to complete caecal devitalisation. A second pedunculated lipoma was identified at necropsy, located on the transverse colon with an area of ischaemia on the mesenteric pedicle (the abnormal stalk of tissue connecting the lipoma to the colonic mesentery), consistent with pressure from being entwined with the jejunal mesenteric pedicle. Chicks are ideal to follow the development of the intestinal microbiota and to understand how a pathogen perturbs this developing population. Taxonomic/metagenomic analyses captured the development of the chick microbiota in unperturbed chicks and in chicks infected with Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium (STm) during development. Taxonomic analysis suggests that colonization by the chicken microbiota takes place in several waves. The cecal microbiota stabilizes at day 12 posthatch with prominent Gammaproteobacteria and Clostridiales. Introduction of S. Typhimurium at day 4 posthatch disrupted the expected waves of intestinal colonization. Taxonomic and metagenomic shotgun sequencing analyses allowed us to identify species present in uninfected chicks. Untargeted metabolomics suggested different metabolic activities in infected chick microbiota. This analysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry on ingesta confirmed that lactic acid in cecal content coincides with the stable presence of enterococci in STm-infected chicks. Unique metabolites, including 2-isopropylmalic acid, an intermediate in the biosynthesis of leucine, were present only in the cecal content of STm-infected chicks. The metagenomic data suggested that the microbiota in STm-infected chicks contained a higher abundance of genes, from STm itself, involved in branched-chain amino acid synthesis. We generated an ilvC deletion mutant (STM3909) encoding ketol-acid-reductoisomerase, a gene required for the production of l-isoleucine and l-valine. ΔilvC mutants are disadvantaged for growth during competitive infection with the wild type. Providing the ilvC gene in trans restored the growth of the ΔilvC mutant. Our integrative approach identified biochemical pathways used by STm to establish a colonization niche in the chick intestine during development. IMPORTANCE Chicks are an ideal model to follow the development of the intestinal microbiota and to understand how a pathogen perturbs this developing population. Using taxonomic and metagenomic analyses, we captured the development of chick microbiota to 19 days posthatch in unperturbed chicks and in chicks infected with Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium (STm). We show that normal development of the microbiota takes place in waves and is altered in the presence of a pathogen. Metagenomics and metabolomics suggested that branched-chain amino acid biosynthesis is especially important for Salmonella growth in the infected chick intestine. Salmonella mutants unable to make l-isoleucine and l-valine colonize the chick intestine poorly. Restoration of the pathway for biosynthesis of these amino acids restored the colonizing ability of Salmonella. Integration of multiple analyses allowed us to correctly identify biochemical pathways used by Salmonella to establish a niche for colonization in the chick intestine during development.

Bitter taste receptors (Tas2rs in mice) detect bitterness, a warning signal for toxins and poisons, and are expressed in enteroendocrine cells. We tested the hypothesis that Tas2r138 and Tas2r116 mRNAs are modulated by microbiota alterations induced by a long-term high-fat diet (HFD) and antibiotics (ABX) (ampicillin and neomycin) administered in drinking water. Cecum and colon specimens and luminal contents were collected from C57BL/6 female and male mice for qRT-PCR and microbial luminal 16S sequencing. HFD with/without ABX significantly increased body weight and fat mass at 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Tas2r138 and Tas2r116 mRNAs were significantly increased in mice fed HFD for 8 weeks vs. normal diet, and this increase was prevented by ABX. There was a distinct microbiota separation in each experimental group and significant changes in the composition and diversity of microbiome in mice fed a HFD with/without ABX. Tas2r mRNA expression in HFD was associated with several genera, particularly with Akkermansia, a Gram-negative mucus-resident bacterium. These studies indicate that luminal bacterial composition is affected by sex, diet, and ABX and support a microbial dependent upregulation of Tas2rs in HFD-induced obesity, suggesting an adaptive host response to specific diet-induced dysbiosis.

Background: Duplex or vermiform appendix refers to the presence of an appendix beside the naturally occurring one. Although, duplex appendix emerges from the caecum most of the time, yet it is encountered in other parts of the colon. Inflammation of duplex appendix may represent not only a clinical, but also a surgical dilemma, and this would be confusing further among patients who already had prior appendectomy. Case presentation: We present a case of 29-years old Egyptian male patient with history of appendectomy one and half year before presenting to the emergency department with recurrent acute abdominal pain that was linked to duplex appendicitis abnormally emerged from the mid-ascending colon. The first episode was treated conservatively considering atypical right colon diverticulitis as a potential differential diagnosis. Seven months later the patient was treated by laparoscopic appendectomy and experienced an uneventful pot-operative course. Conclusion: Duplex appendicitis, though rare, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of recurrent acute abdomen even after appendectomy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Kanpyo (KP) is an edible dried product produced by peeling the fruit of the gourd Lagenaria siceraria var. hispida; it is used in the traditional Japanese cuisine. The health functionality of KP due to its rich dietary fibre is expected to include a possible combined effect of KP-responsive indigenous gut bacteria (KP-RIB). However, its effect on the gut microbiota is unclear. To determine the effects of the KP on the gut microbiota and their host, Institute of Cancer Research mice were fed a high-sucrose diet containing no fibre (NF) or 5% (w/w) KP for 14 days, and their caecal microbiota was analysed by 16S rRNA (V4) amplicon sequencing. Higher faecal frequency and weight and lower spleen weight and spleen tumour necrosis factor-α levels were observed in KP-fed mice than in NF-fed mice (p < 0.05). KP increased and decreased the abundance of short-chain fatty acid producer Lachnospiraceae and obesity-inflammation related Allobaculum species, respectively. In the case of human faecal cultures, stool samples from five healthy volunteers were inoculated and incubated at 37 °C for 24 h anaerobically; 3.2% (w/v) KP suppressed putrefactive compounds (indole, phenol, and ammonia). KP increased butyrate-producer Faecalibacterium, acetate/lactate-producer Bifidobacterium, and Lachnospira. Furthermore, KP cultures showed high antioxidant and RAW264.7 macrophage cell activation capacities. These results suggest that KP-RIB and KP intake may synergistically affect host health. Introduction: Niacin is one of the essential vitamins for mammals. It plays important roles in maintaining rumen microecological homeostasis. Our previous study indicated that dietary niacin significantly elevated intramuscular fat content (IMF) in castrated finishing steers. Whether niacin affects fat deposition by regulating the microbial composition and functional capacities of gastrointestinal microbiome has been unknown yet. Methods: In this study, 16 castrated Xiangzhong Black cattle were randomly assigned into either control group fed with a basal concentrate diet (n = 8) or niacin group fed with a basal concentrate diet added 1000 mg/kg niacin (n = 8). Seven rumen samples and five cecum content samples were randomly collected from each of control and niacin groups for metagenomic sequencing analysis. Results: A total of 2,981,786 non-redundant microbial genes were obtained from all tested samples. Based on this, the phylogenetic compositions of the rumen and cecum microbiome were characterized. We found that bacteria dominated the rumen and cecum microbiome. Prevotella ruminicola and Ruminococcus flavefaciens were the most abundant bacterial species in the rumen microbiome, while Clostridiales bacterium and Eubacterium rectale were predominant bacterial species in the cecum microbiome. Rumen microbiome had significantly higher abundances of GHs, GTs, and PLs, while cecum microbiome was enriched by CBMs and AAs. We found a significant effect of dietary niacin on rumen microbiome, but not on cecum microbiome. Dietary niacin up-regulated the abundances of bacterial species producing lactic acid and butyrate, fermenting lactic acid, and participating in lipid hydrolysis, and degradation and assimilation of nitrogen-containing compounds, but downregulated the abundances of several pathogens and bacterial species involved in the metabolism of proteins and peptides, and methane emissions. From the correlation analysis, we suggested that niacin improved nutrient digestion and absorption, but reduced energy loss, and Valine, leucine and isoleucine degradation of rumen microbiome, which resulted in the increased host IMF. Conclusion: The results suggested that dietary manipulation, such as the supplementation of niacin, should be regarded as the effective and convenient way to improve IMF of castrated finishing steers by regulating rumen microbiome. Introduction: Anastomotic leakage is a severe complication associated with gastrointestinal surgery. The process of intestinal wound healing is crucial for the successful outcome of digestive tract surgical repair procedures. This research aimed to determine the impact of silver nanoparticles sheet (Acticoat) on the anastomotic healing of the cecum in rabbits. Methods: A total of 48 New Zealand male rabbits in good health were used for cecum transection and anastomosis. The animals were randomized into the control group (C) and the silver nanoparticles group (AgNPs). In the C group, the transected cecum was end-to-end anastomosed with a single layer of simple continuous suture pattern using 3-0 polyglyconate. In contrast, a silver nanoparticle sheet (Acticoat) was covered around the sutured anastomotic line in the AgNPs group. Postoperatively, abdominal ultrasound imaging and the Bristol Rabbit Pain Score (BRPS) were measured on days 7, 15, and 30. Eight rabbits from each group were euthanized at each time point to assess macroscopic findings, bursting pressure tests, tensile strength tests, histopathological examinations, and immunohistochemical analyses. Results: The AgNPs group demonstrated a significant increase in the cecal lumen diameter wall (p ≤ 0.001), burst pressure measurement (p ≤ 0.02), and tensile strength (p ≤ 0.01). Conversely, the AgNPs group had significantly lower BRPS scores (p ≤ 0.01). In addition, histopathological examinations revealed that AgNPs significantly reduced inflammatory cell infiltration (neutrophils and macrophages) and enhanced collagen deposition. Immunohistochemical analyses revealed a significant increase (p ≤ 0.01) of α-SMA and a reduction of CD31 in the anastomotic tissue of the AgNPs group. Discussion: The results of the present study indicate that the utilization of the AgNPs sheet (Acticoat®) effectively enhanced the strength of cecum anastomosis, resulting in a reduction in anastomosis leakages, pain scores, and abdominal adhesions. Seasonal environmental shifts and improper eating habits are the important causes of diarrhea in children and growing animals. Whether adjusting feeding time at varying temperatures can modify cecal bacterial structure and improve diarrhea remains unknown. Three batches growing rabbits with two groups per batch were raised under different feeding regimens (fed at daytime vs. nighttime) in spring, summer and winter separately, and contents were collected at six time points in 1 day and used 16S rRNA sequencing to investigate the effects of feeding regimens and season on the composition and circadian rhythms of cecum bacteria. Randomized forest regression screened 12 genera that were significantly associated with seasonal ambient temperature changes. Nighttime feeding reduced the abundance of the conditionally pathogenic bacteria Desulfovibrio and Alistipes in summer and Campylobacter in winter. And also increases the circadian rhythmic Amplicon Sequence Variants in the cecum, enhancing the rhythm of bacterial metabolic activity. This rhythmic metabolic profile of cecum bacteria may be conducive to the digestion and absorption of nutrients in the host cecum. In addition, this study has identified 9 genera that were affected by the combination of seasons and feeding time. In general, we found that seasons and feeding time and their combinations affect cecum composition and circadian rhythms, and that daytime feeding during summer and winter disrupts the balance of cecum bacteria of growing rabbits, which may adversely affect cecum health and induce diarrhea risk. INTRODUCTION: The efficacy of texture and color enhancement imaging (TXI) in the novel light-emitting diode endoscopic system for polyp detection has not been examined. We aimed to evaluate the noninferiority of the additional 30-second (Add-30-s) observation of the right-sided colon (cecum/ascending colon) with TXI compared with narrow band imaging (NBI) for detecting missed polyps. METHODS: We enrolled 381 patients ‡40 years old who underwent colonoscopy from September 2021 to June 2022 in3institutions and randomly assigned themto either the TXI orNBI groups.The right-sided colonwas first observed with white light imaging in both groups. Second, after reinsertion from hepatic flexure to the cecum, the right-sided colon was observed with Add-30-s observation of either TXI or NBI. The primary endpoint was to examine the noninferiority of TXI to NBI using themean number of adenomas and sessile serrated lesions per patient. The secondary ones were to examine adenoma detection rate, adenoma and sessile serrated lesions detection rates, and polyp detection rates in both groups. RESULTS: The TXI and NBI groups consisted of 177 and 181 patients, respectively, and the noninferiorities of the mean number of adenomas and sessile serrated lesions per patients in the second observation were significant (TXI 0.29 [51/177] vs NBI 0.30 [54/181], P < 0.01). The change in adenoma detection rate, adenoma and sessile serrated lesions detection rate, and polyp detection rate for the right-sided colon between the TXI andNBI groupswere not different (10.2%/10.5%[P50.81], 13.0%/12.7%[P50.71], and 15.3%/13.8% [P 5 0.71]), respectively. Simple Summary: Goose meat is an ideal nutrition source with high protein, low fat, and low cholesterol, and dietary acidifiers supplementation are considered an efficient nutritional regulation approach to promote poultry industry development. Hence, this study was conducted to evaluate the benefits of citric acid supplementation in growing geese. The specific results found that citric acid supplementation showed a significant growth-promoting function, and benefited the antioxidant capacity and cecum microbiota of the geese. An inclusion level of 3.2% CA in growing geese diets is recommended based on this study. To investigate the efficiency and optimum inclusion level of CA in growing geese diets on performance, plasma constituents, and intestinal health, 240 healthy female geese at the age of 28d were randomly allotted six treatment diets incorporated with 0, 0.8, 1.6, 2.4, 3.2, and 4% CA. Each treatment group consisted of five replicates and eight birds per replicate. The findings demonstrated that 3.2% CA supplementation resulted in improved growth performance (ADG, ADFI, and FBW) (p = 0.001), and geese who received CA also showed lower body fat contents (p < 0.05) than the control group. Moreover, geese from the 2.4% and 3.2% CA group had the highest plasma glutathione peroxidase and insulin-like growth factor 1 levels compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). A microbial diversity analysis of the cecum conducted by 16S rDNA sequencing revealed that 3.2% CA supplementation showed a significantly higher abundance of beneficial bacteria (Muribaculaceae, CHKCI001, Erysipelotricha-ceae_UCG_003, and UCG_009) (p < 0.05) and a lower abundance of harmful bacteria (Atopobiaceae, Streptococcus, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Alistipes) (p < 0.10). Collectively, our results revealed that dietary supplementation with 3.2% CA had several benefits on the performance and physiological health of growing geese by promoting nutrients metabolism, improving antioxidant capacity, and modulating cecum microbiota. The longjaw tapertail anchovy Coilia nasus, which migrates from ocean to freshwater for spawning in spring, is an important anadromous fish with ecological and cultural significance. To determine parasite infection in anadromous C. nasus, a total of 103 fish from the Yangtze River were collected and examined in 2021 and 2022. The overall infection prevalence of nematodes in C. nasus was 100%, with a mean intensity of 13.81 ± 16.45. The mean intensity of nematode infections in 2022 was significantly higher than that observed in 2021 across all sampling sites (p < 0.05). Nematodes were widely detected in the mesentery, pyloric cecum, stomach, and liver, among which the mesentery accounted for the highest proportion, reaching up to 53.52%. A total of eight ascaridoid nematodes belonging to the family Anisakidae and Raphidascarididae were identified by using morphological characters and molecular biological techniques, including two species of Anisakis, five species of Hysterothylacium, and one species of Raphidascaris. A. pegreffii was found as the predominant species, accounting for 48.65% of all identified parasitic nematodes in liver, while Raphidascaris sp. was the most common nematode in the mesentery, pyloric cecum, and stomach, reaching up to 39.81%, 36.21%, and 74.36%, respectively. The present study systematically investigated the parasitic status and community structure of the nematode in C. nasus during its migration in the Yangtze River. This research provides a foundation for studying the impact of nematode parasitism on the reproductive migration and population recruitment of C. nasus, and offers valuable insights for biomarker screening and nematode identification in C. nasus. Liver abscess is commonly seen but liver abscess with caecal gangrene or perforation is a very rare condition. The peritonitis due to caecal perforation when associated with liver abscess is commonly misdiagnosed as ruptured liver abscess and during surgical intervention is often overlooked which comes out to be detrimental. Entamoeba histolytica commonly invades the mucosa of caecum which causes flask shaped ulcers leading to fulminant typhilitis to caecal perforation. Here we describe six cases of concomitant liver abscess with cecal gangrene. Caecal perforation with liver abscess is rare but fatal condition which requires high degree of suspicion for diagnosis as the early intervention is prerequisite for better outcome. Our study provides a theoretical basis and practical experience for the application of herbs in poultry farming and help to develop them as novel feed additives. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the designed herbal formula (DHF) on growth performance, blood indices, organ traits, and cecum microbiology in broilers. A total of 96 male broilers of 1 d were selected and randomly assigned to two groups with six replicates of eight broilers each. The control (CON) and the basal diet containing 1.0% DHF (Astragali radix, Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz., Isatis tinctoria Linnaeus, and Citri reticulatae pericarpium, 2:1:1:2) were fed separately. The experiment was conducted for 35 days. The results showed that the DHF diet increased body weight and decreased the feed conversion ratio (FCR) (p < 0.05). At 21 days, the spleen, thymus, lymphocytes, and thrombocytes were increased (p < 0.05), and pancreas, duodenum, heterophils, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) were decreased (p < 0.05). At 35 days, the heart, pancreas, white blood cell, heterophils, hemoglobin, MCH and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were decreased, while lymphocytes and middle cells were increased (p < 0.05). The results of microbial diversity analysis showed that the DHF diet decreased the microbial diversity of the cecum. Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phyla, where the DHF diet increased the relative abundances of Bacteroides uniformis, Bacteroides vulgatus, and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, and then decreased the relative abundance of Shigella sonnei. In conclusion, DHF played a positive role in improving the growth performance, immune performance, and relative abundance of Bacteroides uniformis, Bacteroides vulgatus, and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii in cecum microbiology in broilers, and has the potential to be used as a novel feed additive. Human foodborne outbreaks with antibiotic-resistant Salmonella enterica associated with contaminated poultry products have recently involved serogroup C serovars Infantis and Hadar. The current study evaluated a commercially available Salmonella vaccine for cross-protection against Infantis and Hadar serovars in turkeys. The live, attenuated S. Typhimurium (serogroup B) vaccine significantly reduced colonization of intestinal tissues (cecum, cecal tonsils, and cloaca) by serovars Infantis (C1) and Hadar (C2) and significantly limited systemic dissemination to the spleen. S. Infantis, but not S. Hadar, disseminated to bone marrow in non-vaccinated turkeys, but vaccination prevented S. Infantis dissemination to the bone marrow. The S. Infantis challenge strain contained the pESI megaplasmid, and virulence mechanism(s) residing on this plasmid may support dissemination and/or colonization of systemic niches such as myeloid tissue. Collectively, the data indicate that vaccinating turkeys with the serogroup B S. Aim The poultry industry represents an important economic sector in Tunisia. This study aims to determine the antimicrobial resistance phenotypes and genotypes and virulence factors of enterococci collected from chicken caecum in Tunisia. Methods and results Forty-nine composite chicken caecum samples were recovered in 49 different Tunisian farms (December 2019–March 2020). Each composite sample corresponds to six individual caecum from each farm. Composite samples were plated on Slanetz–Bartley agar both supplemented (SB-Van) and not supplemented (SB) with vancomycin and isolates were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight. Antibiotic resistance and virulence genes were tested by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and sequencing and multilocus-sequence-typing of selected enterococci was performed. One hundred sixty seven enterococci of six different species were recovered. Acquired linezolid resistance was detected in 6 enterococci of 4/49 samples (8.1%): (A) four optr A-carrying Enterococcus faecalis isolates assigned to ST792, ST478, and ST968 lineages; (B) two poxt A-carrying Enterococcus faecium assigned to ST2315 and new ST2330. Plasmid typing highlighted the presence of the rep 10, rep 14, rep 7, rep 8, and pLG1 in these strains. One vancomycin-resistant E. faecium isolate (typed as ST1091) with van A gene (included in Tn 1546) was detected in SB-Van plates. The gelE, agg, esp , and hyl virulence genes were found in linezolid- and vancomycin-resistant enterococci. High resistance rates were identified in the enterococci recovered in SB plates: tetracycline [74.8%, tet (M) and tet (L) genes], erythromycin [65.9%, erm (B)], and gentamicin [37.1%, aac(6′)-Ie–aph(2″)-Ia ]. Conclusion The detection of emerging mechanisms of resistance related to linezolid and vancomycin in the fecal enterococci of poultry farms has public health implications, and further surveillance should be carried out to control their dissemination by the food chain. Purpose: To assess the diagnostic performance and reliability of 18 CT signs to diagnose cecal volvulus, a surgical emergency, versus a group of non-volvulus mimickers. Materials and methods: Four radiologists retrospectively and independently assessed 18 CT signs in 191 patients with cecal volvulus (n = 63) or a non-volvulus control group ((n = 128), including cecal bascule (n = 19), mobile cecum (n = 95), and colonic pseudo-obstruction (n = 14)) at a single institution from 2013 to 2021. Fleiss' kappa coefficient was used to assess inter-reader agreement. For diagnostic performance metrics, we assessed sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. For predictive performance, all 18 signs were included in bivariate and stepwise lasso multivariate logistic regression models to diagnose cecal volvulus. Performance was assessed by ROC curves. Results: 191 patients (mean age: 63 years +/− 15.5 [SD]; 135 women) were included in the study. Nine of the 18 CT signs of cecal volvulus demonstrated good or better (> 0.6) inter-reader agreement. Individual CT signs with sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values all above 70% for diagnosing cecal volvulus were transition point, bird beak, and X-marks-the-spot. A lasso regression model determined four CT features: transition point, bird beak, coffee bean, and whirl had excellent prediction (AUC =.979) for cecal volvulus if all present. Conclusion: CT signs for cecal volvulus that have high sensitivity and specificity include: transition point, bird beak, and X-marks-the-spot and were reliable in distinguishing non-volvulus mimickers. A critical procedure in the transcribriform approach is the resection of the crista galli. However, the standard technique for crista galli resection has several disadvantages. We reviewed the cases of patients with olfactory neuroblastomas who underwent an endoscopic endonasal transcribriform approach using a newly developed technique for crista galli resection. We performed a cadaveric study to measure the superior accessibility limits using the proposed method. We included 38 patients with olfactory neuroblastomas in this study. The tumor invaded the posterior crista galli in four patients. The anterior end of the crista galli was not invaded by the tumor. Our cadaveric study showed that the dura was approachable to the point that was 7.4 ± 1.3 mm superior and 23.2 ± 7.2 mm lateral to the foramen cecum following crista galli removal. Simple Summary: Chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) are cecal fermenters; the health of their gastrointestinal system contributes significantly to their overall wellbeing, yet minimal data are available regarding the composition of the microbiota present in different segments of their gastrointestinal tract. This study addresses the knowledge gap regarding the gastrointestinal microbiota in healthy chinchillas. Notably, the cecum and colon displayed significantly higher microbiota abundance compared with the proximal gastrointestinal segments, with cellulose-degrading bacteria as the core microbiota. In contrast, the stomach and small intestine exhibited lower microbiota abundance, with characteristic microbiota possessing acid-resistant properties. Moreover, the Atopobiaceae family was discovered in the proximal gastrointestinal tract of the chinchilla, which is the first report of its presence in the gastrointestinal tract of cecal fermenters. The gastrointestinal microbiota develop alongside the host and play a vital role in the health of cecal fermenters such as chinchillas. However, little is known about the microbiota architecture in healthy chinchillas. Illumine-based 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was used to investigate the microbiota present in six different gastrointestinal tract regions of three healthy adult chinchillas. The findings revealed significantly more abundant microbiota in the large intestine compared with the proximal segments. In addition, the cecum exhibited better evenness compared to the colon. The core microbiota are Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, Actinobacteriota, and Proteobacteria at the phylum level. The signature microbiota of each segment were identified. The cecum had 10 signature microbiota, which had the widest coverage and overlapped with that of the cecum. The stomach had five signature microbiota, exhibiting the second widest coverage and overlapping with the duodenum. No signature microbiota were detected in the jejunum and ileum. While similarities exist with the microbiota of other cecal fermenters, chinchillas exhibit distinct microbiota closely related to their unique digestive mechanisms. This study is a preliminary study of the gastrointestinal microbiota architecture and distribution in healthy chinchillas. Astroviruses have frequently been found in mammals and poultry, but only a few have been successfully isolated for extensive research. Here, we isolated a strain of porcine astrovirus type 5 (PAstV 5) on LLC-porcine kidney (LLC-PK) cells, from the intestinal contents of diarrhea piglets, namely PAstV 5-HNPDS-01. The complete genome sequence length of this strain was 6,419 nt, which has 77.2%–91.1% nucleotide homology with other PAstV 5 strains and 45.0%–50.0% nucleotide homology with other mammalian astroviruses. The recombination analysis indicated that the recombination events were occurred in ORF 2 region (4,444–5,323 nt) in PAstV 5-HNPDS-01 strain. Subsequently, the pathogenicity of PAstV 5-HNPDS-01 was evaluated in 5-day-old piglets. It showed that the PAstV 5-HNPDS-01 could cause mild diarrhea, growth retardation, minor damage to intestinal villi clinically. Meanwhile, PAstV 5-HNPDS-01 infection could affect the microbiota diversity and composition of cecum in piglet from phylum to genus level. After infected with PAstV 5, there was a significant downregulation of beneficial bacteria, including Faecalibacterium, Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, and Prevotella, while harmful bacteria such as Subdoligranulun showed a significant upregulation. Simple Summary: Impactions are the most common issue affecting the small colon in horses, particularly in miniature horses and ponies. Risk factors for small colon faecalith include poor dentition, reduced water consumption, parasite damage, or poor-quality hay. Abdominal pain can range from mild to severe due to intraluminal gas distention orally to the impaction site. Previously, large colon tympany has been identified as a predisposing factor for large colon displacement or volvulus. The aim of this study was to describe the history, clinical and surgical features, and outcome in 10 cases which underwent exploratory laparotomy, where a diagnosis of small colon faecalith concomitant with large colon volvulus or right dorsal displacement was reached. In all clinical cases, the small colon faecalith was determined to be the primary lesion during celiotomy, underscoring the importance of a thorough examination of the small colon tract when diagnosing large colon displacement or volvulus during exploratory laparotomy. Small colon impaction can result in accumulation of ingesta, gas, and fluid orally to the impaction site in horses. Large colon tympany, which is caused by ingesta fermentation, can be a predisposing factor for intestinal displacement. The aim of this study is to report the history, clinical, and surgical findings of horses and ponies referred for abdominal pain not responsive to drugs where a right dorsal displacement (RDD) or large colon volvulus (LCV), together with a small colon faecalith (SCF), were diagnosed during surgery. This study included a total of five horses and five ponies. Based on clinical features, ultrasonographic examination, and rectal palpation, an initial suspected diagnosis of RDD, LCV or severe large colon and caecum distension was made in all clinical cases. Due to the lack of response to medical treatment or worsening of colic symptoms, surgery was performed in all horses: diagnosis of RDD or LCV was made and a SCF was incidentally detected in all cases. While exploratory laparotomy was carried out in all the patients for the presence of a large colon issue, it was probably subsequent to an obstruction of the small colon caused by the presence of an SCF, which is generally difficult to diagnose.
