SummaryIn the majority of specimens of drainage bile obtained from biliary fistulae in the human patient, cholesterol is present only in the free form unless the bile is contaminated with blood. One case is reported of the occurrence of combined cholesterol in bile draining from a cholecystostomy.

The data obtained from the experiments on dogs reported in this paper lead us to conclude that bile pigment is not absorbed from the gall bladder bile. The mean loss of pigment is so small when compared with the amount of water lost that it is negligible. Our cholesterol data do not support the concept that this substance is secreted into the gall bladder bile of the dog under normal conditions. In the majority of experiments there was a loss of cholesterol. Indeed we have failed to find any evidence of definite secretion or absorption save in the case of the infected gall bladder. We are led to conclude, as did Rous and McMaster (15) with regard to bile pigment, that normally there is no absorption of cholesterol.

Determination of the glycogen and lipid content of samples of liver obtained from patients in the course of operations on the biliary tract indicated that the diet high in carbohydrate and protein advocated by us 1 was more effective in decreasing the fat content of the liver than in elevating the glycogen content. Although it is generally believed that attempts to improve the resistance of the liver to injury from hepatotoxic agents is a contribution of the present century, elaborate studies in this field were undertaken during the nineteenth century.1It was, however, the experiments of Opie and Alford2which led clinicians, at least in this country, to believe that a diet high in carbohydrate offered direct protection of the liver from the necrotizing effects of chloroform.
